when did you realize you wanted to become a hairstylist? i took a detour into hairdressing while I was on the path to a career in design. i fell in love with hairdressing and i'm still here.

what does shu uemura art of hair represent for you? i love the japanese aesthetic. i love the simplicity, the japanese way of looking at things—the idea of minimalizing something to make it very easy to understand its beauty.

at shu uemura, you’re involved in the training and the development of young talents: what’s the first piece of advice you give them? Mr. Shu Uemura was brilliant and, like every great artist, his central concern was properly preparing the canvas. whether the canvas was the skin or the hair, if you prepare it correctly your job as a hairdresser is easier. and that doesn’t improve it only once.

what do your customers specifically like when they experience a ritual with you? the shu uemura rituals are all about being calm and that’s especially important since some clients are quite tense when they arrive. they are usually affluent, but time is one thing they don’t have much of. These clients want a ritual that relaxes and calms them.

what did you use on your models’ hair?

one model’s hair was quite dry on the ends, so one thing we did was the ultimate remedy treatment. then, when we looked at the styling, we wanted to keep it natural and young looking. here, the texture wave was the perfect solution because it adds just a little touch of natural graininess to the hair. it is quite soft, like a textured wave, but it feels natural, too. another mode had really dehydrated her hair.we decided to use a mixture that contained moisturizer as well as a product to restructure it. this brought back the hair’s natural lustre. one of the things I’ve been using recently is the ultimate remedy finishing product, which is great because it includes serum and oils that moisturize the hair—a great balance between conditioning and control. It’s useful for all dry hair types because it lets you tame the hair. and my favorite of all time is essence absolue, which is the most amazingly versatile product.
