By definition, your relationship with Kaneki Ken was forbidden. 

The infamous half-ghoul and the prodigy of Arima Kishou? That was almost as good as being a Montague and a Capulet. 

You got lost in thought as your lover hunted through your apartment for your first aid kit.

Would the CCG be the Capulets if this were indeed a Romeo and Juliet story? They were the ones who had more power, after all. They were able to walk around freely during the day, freely hunting down their prey while ghouls hid in fear for their lives.

A gentle caress on the back of your head made you jump and look up from your spot on the side of the bathtub.

Kaneki Ken stands illuminated by the bathroom light, but you swear you’ve never seen anything more handsome. The harsh luminescence makes his white hair almost transparent, and his dark gray eyes are overshadowed as he bends his head and sits beside you. 

“You found it?” You ask, and he nods, keeping quiet, and you don’t miss how he doesn’t say a word. 

He’s angry. That much is obvious. 

You don’t want to argue, don’t want to fight. So you wordlessly unbutton your white work shirt that’s coated in your own blood and shed it, tossing it in the bathroom sink. Then, you turn around so he can see how bad the damage is. While he doesn’t say a word, you hear the almost inaudible gasp that escapes him. 

And you know how bad it is.

The kagune of the Aogiri Tree ghoul had cut deeply into your shoulder blades and spine. It wasn’t lethal. You could still walk and everything. It had been a tough fight, with you getting the injuries protecting a small child that had almost been a midnight snack for the ghoul. He—or she, you couldn’t tell with the mask—had been an Ukaku type, with wings of reds and purples that you, frankly, found beautiful. 

It almost hurt you to kill them. 

But you had to remind yourself that all ghouls weren’t like Kaneki. They weren’t all like Anteiku. Some of them are simply man-eating monsters, people or not; that wasn’t something you could forgive that easily. 

The sting of antiseptic has you jolting from your memories, and you hiss in pain against your attempts to keep quiet. Ken murmurs a soft “sorry” but doesn’t stop cleaning the gunk and grime out of the gash. 

“You’ll need stitches.” He says in that quiet voice of his. You hum,

“I trust you.” You whisper, and he doesn’t respond. 

He’s been so silent after everything with Jason. But you still hear soft cries when he thinks you’re asleep. You still see the almost invisible shaking of his hands when there’s a loud, unexpected noise. 

You still see how broken he is because of it. 

But you also see how strong it made him. He loves fiercer, holds you just a few seconds longer every time he hugs you, every time he kisses you. 

The pain of the needle dipping in and out of your skin and muscles has you biting your knuckle to keep quiet. While your neighbors knew what you did for a living, that didn’t mean they had to know you were in agony. 

Ken, luckily, makes it quick. He ties off the thread and cuts it before leaning in to press a gentle kiss to the wound. His lips are soft, and when he leans his forehead between your shoulder blades, you can feel how worried he is. 

Because he almost lost you tonight. 

If your partner had been a few seconds slower or hadn’t gotten you away from the ghoul in time, you would have died. Would have left him alone.

“You don’t have to be so gentle.” You say and feel him shift, wrapping a strong arm around your waist and pulling you tenderly into his chest. 

“Yes, I do.” He says, and you hear his voice crack, “Someone has to be.”

And that breaks your heart. 

Because you know it’s true. 

Your hands are perpetually coated in red and covered in harsh calluses and blisters from handling your quinque. Your body is hard with muscle from endless fights. 

You aren’t gentle with yourself. You know it. Ken knows it. 

Abruptly, you realize he’s talking. 

“My bounty is as boundless as the sea, my love as deep; the more I give to thee, the more I have, for both are infinite.” He whispers, and you smile. Weren’t you just thinking about Romeo and Juliet? You lean your head back and turn it so you can kiss his hair.

“Is that a roundabout way of saying you love me?” You ask and feel him chuckle, feel the vibrations against your back.

“I suppose so.” Is all he says. But he doesn’t need to say more. 

Because you can tell he loves you.

Hello there! I am like utterly obsessed with Tokyo Ghoul at the moment and my friend and I were talking about potential ocs we’re making and then we got on the topic of ghouls and cigarettes and I was wondering what your thoughts on that were? Like, would they even be able to smoke or vape and how would the taste thing work? Furthermore, would nicotine even have an effect on them? I would love to like have an entire convo about this but I wanted to know your thoughts on it lmao im sorry this is so long I have many thoughts

Oh HELL yeah

While a ghoul’s digestive system will reject nearly everything, smoking is as safe for them as it is for humans because it doesn’t require any digestion. Though While this means they technically can smoke without getting sick, ghouls are absolute lightweights when it comes to any substances

Smoking cigarettes and tobacco has the same effect on ghouls that it does on humans, as well as having the same ease of addiction, only at an accelerated pace and intensity. Because of how efficiently the ghoul body has evolved to filter out toxins, a ghoul who smokes will feel the need to do so more often, and go into and through withdrawal quicker than a human. It’s not pleasant, but plenty of ghouls think it’s worth it for the loss of appetite cigarettes can cause them

Vaping is more or less the same, only they absolutely can not use the flavored juices. It’s a disgusting chemical taste to them, but unflavored ones are a good enough way for them to get their nicotine fix

Smoking is, unfortunately, still risky for ghouls. Even with their accelerated healing it can gunk up their lungs, but they also have the added issue of high likelihood of nicotine poisoning due to how easily their bodies are effected by substancess

Smoking with ghouls isn’t very common, not only because of the health issues or cost, but the smell. A human, and even some ghouls, can tolerate the smell for a small comfort, but for ghouls it can be absolutely overpowering. Even if they ca tolerate it, other ghouls may not be able to tolerate it and it can isolate them. Because of that alone very few who try it take up smoking long term

Uta (Tokyo Ghoul) X My Hero Academia! 1580 Words

Uta was miffed. And by miffed, he meant falling from the sky. Literally. Uta twisted his torso, spotting strange looking people who were looking at him. The ghoul decided to play it safe and grabbed a manhole cover, dove in, and swung it closed. There was a man with a squirrel head. The shock didn’t last long though. As he ran down the sewers, Uta heard the sounds of a struggle. The ghoul rushed to the scene, to see sentient sludge suffocating a teen. Uta immediately lunged forward, snatching the sludges' eyes and tossing them in his mouth. Yum. The sludge dropped the boy, screaming and writhing in pain. Weak. He then reached inside the sentient slimes head, pulling out its brain, taking a bite, and smashing the rest under his boot.

With the slime dead and brain remnants sticking to his footwear, Uta decided to be nice, walking up to the boy. “Cough it up greenie.” Uta said as he smacked the kids back, initiating a coughing spree. “You don't want that stuff in your lungs.” Once the greenie finished (mostly) emptying his lungs, he quickly checked his surroundings. Uta could tell the boy knew exactly what he did, if the subtle glances and fearful expression was anything to go by. The sludge was an absolute mess by now, and greenie looked and acted about as strong and confident as a mole, so Uta had nothing to worry about as he walked up to the boy. “Kudos to you, keeping your cool kiddo. Need a hand-” “I am here!” The manhole Uta emerged from suddenly blew open, launching at Uta and greenie and revealing a large, loud blonde. Thankfully, Uta was a ghoul, so he easily caught the manhole cover. “You should really be more careful, sir.” Uta chasted as he sets the cover back in its rightful place. “The boy could have gotten hurt.” “You’re—“ the man looked over the scene, “what did you do to that villain!?” Said man’s face was now clouded with rage, his eyes seeming to glow blue as he realized the situation. Uta grinned, picking brain gunk from between his teeth. “I made his innards a snack, what else?” The man threw a punch, which Uta easily caught, grabbing onto the kid with the other hand. “Something wrong?” The ghoul teased, looking over his sunglasses to reveal his scarlet eyes. “Let the boy go!” The blonde roared. Hehe, he looked positively enraged! He came in with the other fist, so Uta let go of greenie and caught it. This punch was significantly stronger, so the boy tumbled back. “Run my boy, get out of here!” Uta glanced back, and the boy wasn’t looking at the blonde, he was looking at the ghoul, and he was curious. The boy was more intuitive than the muscle brain, eh? He had a look in his eyes that said ‘I know you're not human.’ “And get yourself checked into a hospital!” Uta would find him after he got out of this mess. Greenie had run away, so all Uta had to do was lose this guy. “Ya know, I wasn’t exactly planning on getting in any fights today.” Uta commented, as if he wasn’t currently wrestling a powerhouse. He reached the strength of a mid upper-end ghoul. A-rate maybe? “Who are you!?” Was all the man asked/said. “Oh! My name is Uta. Yours?” Now that caught him off guard. Clearly Mr. FruitSmash wasn’t expecting an answer. “Buh-bai!” And that was Utas Genki Girl side coming out. He dove back into the sewers, leaping off the rubble that came from the fight. Surprisingly, blondie didn’t follow.

~ ~ ~ Izuku sat at his desk, muttering frantically as he wrote in a notebook, a black one this time. Titled: ‘Villain Quirk Analysis’. There were only a few entries in this one, including Stain (Chizome Akaguro), Overhaul (Kai Chisaki), Mr Compress (Atsuhiro Sako) -plus a few others-, and the Tattooed Man. The entry he was working on now. Izuku had taken ‘apprenticeships’ under Stain and Overhaul in exchange for information on heroes with a less than stellar track record. He hated himself for it, but Izuku couldn’t help himself. He’d always been the trash, why couldn’t he take it out for a change? “M-Mr. Izuku?” “Yes Eri?” The greenette had taken custody of the girl, in exchange for a free hero’s death warrant and some hacking services, on the condition that he send some blood over to Overhaul once a month. “Can I go see Ms. Tsu?” The girl was his babysitter and blood-drawer, they lived in the same apartment complex. The front door opened, and Izuku inhaled sharply, opening his window. “Yes, go to her. Mum got home early, grab your things quickly.” Eri understood the urgency, grabbing her bird mask as Izuku stuffed his black notebook under the floorboard in his closet. Izuku ushered his little candy apple out the window and watched as she pounded on the upstairs window, quickly being whisked into the room by a pair of familiar hands. Izuku then yanked out his study book, barely settling back in when his mother opened the door. “Oh, good job Izuku! I would have hated to see you not studying.” Inko said with a happy smile. Izuku threw a grin over his shoulder, praying the woman didn’t notice his panic. *close* *click* and that was the lock.

All Might, or Toshinori Yagi, doubled over and reduced to his small form, seething. The man had been toying with him, and got away so easily! The hero pulled out his phone, dialing Tsukauchis phone number. The detective picked up in a single ring. “Tsukauchi, we have a problem. I’ll send you my location.” “Alright, I’ll be there as soon as possible.” It didn’t take long for the man to arrive, quickly taping off the scene and calling some reinforcements to block the route. “Toshinori, what happened over here?” The detective asked, the veteran hero, turning to his old friend. “There was another man here. Albeit it wasn’t a full power punch, he caught my fist and killed the villain. I managed to get the boy he was holding away, but I doubt that’ll be the end of him.” Tsukauchi got the memo, his face turning grave. “A villain that can catch any of your punches is a problem. I’ll send out a PSA to all the heroes in the area.” The detective pulled out a recording device. “Can you give a description?”

~ ~ ~ Uta took the metro to where his old mask shop would be, to find it in a run down district. The buildings were obviously less well kept compared to the central cities. Downtown Musutafu, home sweet home. His building was still underground, exactly as he remembered it. Plus, it looked like no one owned it. Inside, it was barren, the dust serving as a good indicator of its lack of use. However, when he opened the back door, he found it connected to a network of… Alleyways? The sky wasn’t visible from the back door, and the place reeked of blood and salt. After a moment of wandering, Uta began to hear sniffles. He followed the sound to see a blonde girl, curled up and crying. "Hey. Kiddo. You need help?"

: : : Uta couldn't figure out for the life of him why the girl- Himiko Toga- was now calling him 'Best Friend'. Here she was, draining a body dry of blood, while Uta himself was munching on an arm. “I’ll do pretty much anything if I can help other people with flesh and blood eating quirks. So all I need to do is wear a mask and spread the word?” “Mhm.” Uta confirmed through a mouthful of flesh. “I still need to refurbish my shop and get supplies, but that shouldn’t take long.”

And so began a week of cleaning and freelance work. Neither of them needed to buy food, seeing as both of them could survive off bodies. Eventually, Uta started making masks, starting with hers. It resembled a cat, yellow and black in color, with feathers extending from the cheeks. Where the roof of the cats mouth would be on her nose, the lower jaw was cut off and altered as a jaw guard, leaving her mouth available to eat with. The mask was truly exquisite, And Himiko ended up praising Uta more than needed to the people she found needing flesh and blood. In fact, on her way back to HySy, she had a group following her. Why? Because they had nowhere else to go.

Traumatized children. That's who Himiko brought him. However, Uta couldn’t say he was surprised. The thing that caught him off guard was the sheer quantity of people, they almost filled his shop. The group ranged from six year old's to teenagers, with one four year old in the mix. "Alright." Uta started, sitting in his chair as the kids sat on the floor in front of him. "First, let's lay out some ground rules." He said. "First, none of you will be able to help me out until I make you a mask, starting with the oldest. Second, no discrimination. I know not all of you have flesh quirks, and I will not tolerate bullying. There's alleys connected to the back of the shop that have functional rooms for you guys. First thing I want you to do is wash up and get some rest, we'll be cleaning that place tomorrow."

My Review of Otherside Picnic

How did I get into this anime? Every now and then, I’ll take advice from one of my close online friends and pick a franchise she’s been hooked on. I mean, she did get me into Azumanga Daioh, Love Live, and the Railgun series…Eh…

This series has potential lesbians, doesn’t it?

Sorawo Kamikoshi is alone in a strange, new world. No one else inhabits the area except for these paranormal creatures (which she calls “Wiggle Waggles”). Sorawo almost ends up drowning in the first scene of the series premier until she was saved by a young girl named Toriko Nishina. Toriko seems to have some experience with this place as she is heavily armed in salt and ammo. After her friend Satsuki disappeared from this place, Toriko has made it her mission to find her. So you’d think she’d be totally serious. But in the real world, this gun-slinging gal is a curious, silly girl. After that first encounter with Sorawo, Toriko has taken an interest in her and either wants to hang out or go to the “Otherside” with her.

But it wasn’t until their second voyage to the otherside where these girls end up with life-altering changes to their bodies. Sorawo ended up staring directly at the wiggle waggle causing madness and mysterious blue gunk appearing around her eyes. But Toriko was there to swat it all away. Because of that incident, Sorawo’s right eyeball has a blue tint to it and Toriko’s left hand has a translucent feel to it. These two anomalies have proven to be beneficial to the girls when their lives are in danger while on the otherside.

BETWEEN THE SUB AND THE DUB: FUNimation owns this here in the states. Now according to my friend who is hooked on everything Otherside Picnic, she’s noticed a lot of changes from FUNimation’s translations. This is certain nitpicky things that I’m usually thrown off by like changing the spelling of main characters or changing translations from the original source material. And FUNimation is guilty of doing both on a regular basis (and doing a lot worse). Yeah, they’ve been given authority to screw around with translations and input whatever they damn-well want. When they do this, it doesn’t end well with the audience. By the way, I’m spelling “Sorawo” like this. I’m actually used to seeing it like that and FUNimation subtitles be damned. Amazingly, no dub to this! I’m thinking they’ll do it one of these days. Here’s what you might recognize these folks from.

*Sorawo is played by Yumiri Hanamori (known for Hayasaka on Kaguya-sama, Asahi on Happy Sugar Life, Doumeki on Keep Your Hands Off Eizoken, and Miza on Tokyo Ghoul :re)

*Toriko is played by Ai Kayano (known for Kanae on Demon Slayer, Itsuwa on Index, Alice on SAO: Alicization, Menma on Anohana, Ryouko on Food Wars, Mayaka on Hyouka, and Anna on The Promised Neverland)

SHIPPING: So think of this as your wet dream of Velma and Daphnie from Scooby Doo getting into a relationship. You’re welcome!

In this corner, we’ve got Toriko. Sure she seems interested in Sorawo. But is it she finds her interesting romantically or just interesting human wise? Plus, we’ve got this thing with the never-seen character named Satsuki. Toriko always talks about her and I’m wondering what’s up with their past. Then you have Sorawo! She has some interesting thinking in her brain and these monologues in her brain that make us think, yeah she wants to get in this girls skirt and scissor ‘till the break of dawn.

Yeah, I’m rooting for this ship to work. It’s just that during episode 9 when Toriko was mentioning Sorawo’s hair and how it’s getting long, I can’t help but think Toriko is trying to turn Sorawo into Satsuki. Yeah and I suppose Sorawo noticed that when someone ends up mentioning that fact.

Once again, anime version isn’t going to give us anything more than speculation when it comes to these relationships. If I wasn’t so swamped with other mangas, I would pick this up to see if there’s any development between Sorawo and Toriko or if Satsuki mucks things up from beyond the beyond.

ENDING: Throughout this anime, you find yourself asking a myriad of questions.

Where the hell is Satsuki?

Did Toriko have a relationship with Satsuki?

What happened to those U.S. soldiers Sorawo and Toriko left in the middle of the season?

Why are these supernatural things happening in the most random places in the real world now?

Seriously, where the fuck is Satsuki?

We…are going to go with the third question. So we’re going back to that mysterious dead-spot those U.S. soldiers were left at. Believe it or not, Sorawo forgot all about those soldiers until Toriko brought it up. I mean, it was a scary situation where the soldiers really didn’t know if they could trust two girls that pop out of nowhere in the Otherside. And the situation almost turned deadly! But in this rescue mission, the soldiers seemed trusting this time.

Despite Sorawo’s eye and Toriko’s hand, they accepted the fact that those two anomalies will lead them to freedom from the Otherside. And after a big fight against a scary wiggle waggle that resembles…Satsuki(?) everyone was able to make it out of the Otherside and back to the real world. Actually, Toriko and Sorawo didn’t even mention Satsuki’s name during this showdown so I’ll drop it for now.

We have an extra several minutes after the girls save the U.S. soldiers. Why don’t we have Toriko and Sorawo go back to the spot where they first met each other? We actually get a touching moment between the two girls. Toriko reveals her feelings about what it was like after Satsuki disappeared and how it’s changed since the three months after hanging out with Sorawo. As for Sorawo, she likes hanging with Toriko despite always longing to be alone.

This was definitely a trip of an anime. And I would love to see more if it’s popular enough to warrant a second season or an OVA. I know the novel and manga are still in publication so there are more stories to come from Otherside Picnic. I myself thought the anime was just okay. There’s so much more I wished was covered. And by cover, I mean by what I’m to assume is to happen next because I have never picked up the manga or novel. But I would like to believe that there’s a deeper connection between Toriko and Sorawo further down in the story.

And what about Satsuki?! She’s mentioned constantly throughout the series and we don’t really get a clear answer of how she disappeard, why she disappeared, and if she’s even alive. Now it could be that Satsuki’s mystery is still going on in the manga and novel, so I should drop it for now and be thankful the anime didn’t divert from the original source material.

But I will continue making the Kozakura face of disapproval until we get some sort of conclusion with the Satsuki mystery.

Unfortunately, I believe this series will just be a one-and-done kind of series. The scores I see from the audience are meh at best. I guess you can say it was a curse that Otherside Picnic was airing in the same season as an anime like Wonder Egg Priority that people kinda took to the latter. But I’ll hold out hope because I like to see the end to things no matter how confusing, meh, or WTF it is.

Hello everypony. i have thrown around the idea of a Tokyo Ghoul re-read event of late, and a lot of people seem interested. I have come to some ideas for it, and wanted to inform everyone as I begin to sort it. If u have any ideas for the re-read, or might be interested in being a mod, pls dm me !

Im thinking basic idea of the re-read is kind of like a book club - a set chapter number per week, then the rest of the week is discussion. The chapter number i was setting was going to be about 1 volume per week - with adjusted numbers for slower and faster readers. (For example, know I can easily do a few day, but i read manga fast, but other people might only have time for 10 chapters a week, etc)

Also want to state the re-read would be open for literally everyone! Bc lots of ppl have expressed interest, but are already deep into personal re-reads - however you can absolutely still participate in the re-read and discussion (especially) if you are reading at a later point in the manga!!!!! i also know a few ppl who haven’t read TG before/anime onlys, who might like to join in too, and that’s absolutely fine too! There would be a spoiler free chat(s) too for newer readers specifically for this - and ppl can invite whoever they want to the read as well.

I’m thinking to do it on Discord, with weekly discussion threads/posts on twitter and tumblr - i believe you can create communities and public groups on both apps, so I would aim to make them also, if enough ppl were interested. There’s also the option for Instagram group chats - a WhatsApp group? Idk - if u have any suggestions, pls lmk. I don’t rly do group chats often.

As for when the re-read will start - i don’t yet know. I’m going back to school next month, as many are, and I’m just a busy little bee with a lot of interests and hobbies, so i would like to get into my routine first and ensure that i have time to dedicate to the re-read - or to gage how much help i might need with it. I think I might aim to start it in October personally - ideally on the first, but ik a lot of people do things during October (I’m literally considering writing for kinktober lmao) so it might be that later than that is a bit better - maybe trying to time it to start with a sort of school break time period. Maybe by the end of September I’ll be like ‘oh this is way easy, i have so much time for it’, but im adhd and bad at time planning, so i doubt it lmao.

I’m sorry if that’s too long a wait - y’all can start re-reads in the meantime idgaf. I just don’t want to start the re-read and realise two weeks in that i literally don’t have time. Lmao.

Thinking about Shuu BPD headcanon again. He’s 21 in TG, and given his loneliness I think it’s fair to assume Kaneki was his first favourite person. Like I acted very similar to Shuu when I had my first favourite person - including when the ‘relationship’ (i wouldn’t call what i went through a relationship personally. It was an internet mutual lol) ended, it went on to affect me for several years, to today, mentally and physically.

I get sad when I think about it, because I don’t like thinking about Shuu going through or feeling what I have - that horrible moment where you look back on your experience with someone, and you can only feel guilt, because you can see now that all you acted so inappropriately. Being overly clingy - dependent - on someone you barely know - because Shuu doesn’t know Kaneki in TG. Not deeply. He’s still in the moment of only wanting to eat him, everything he learns is compartmentalised as knowledge to use as manipulation and such. So his breakdown when Kaneki is taken away from him is a shock to his system - because this is the point where maybe one realises that this is not just about wanting him to eat anymore. It’s indicative of Shuu feeling something more for someone, which he’s probably never had before, and one can imagine how it might feel to realise - oh. I really fucked this person I adore up, because I didn’t understand myself well enough. And that shit hurts man.

Whilst a neurotypical person might be able to look at this realisation and handle it better, for someone with BPD/neurodivergence, this can affect one’s mental and physical health for years afterwards. A known symptom of BPD is not being able to recover ‘typically’ from breakups (meeeeeeeeeeeeee), often leading to self-harm, depression, and such, as well as taking a much longer time to actually recover from the breakup (generally. Ofc not everyone has it like this).

This also explains why in :RE, Shuu is seemingly just as obsessed with Kaneki - because he can’t fucking let go of it. He goes out of his way to ‘get Kaneki back’ for his own benefit, and I wonder if maybe, Shuu wants that Kaneki back so he can right his past wrongs. His newer awareness of his past actions weighs on him, and he wants to show that version of Kaneki that he has changed, that he’s not like That anymore - but he is, in a way. He’s still ill, and this is never brought up. Shuu gets better throughout :re, but we never see how, and either man’s on Elvanse or something, or he’s actively making an effort to restrain the ‘BPD side’ of him. I compare having BPD to having a dog on a muzzle - controlling it is horrible and it’s difficult, but if you don’t, the muzzle comes off and your dog is going to maul someone. Having BPD can be really terrifying sometimes - note: people with BPD are not monsters and if I see one more person say Shuu’s feelings are ‘creepy’ istg—

In early :re, Shuu’s actions can be viewed an overcompensating - trying to fix the damage he feels he might’ve done to Kaneki. He wants Kaneki back for himself, but not to eat him, to show Kaneki that he’s not the person he was. That he’s changed - but he hasn’t. He’s become self-aware, but this isn’t enough to change someone. Shuu still doesn’t understand that. He’s like a beautiful butterfly in that stage where the chrysalis is clear and starting to shake, but the butterfly isn’t out yet, and when it is out, it still has to wait for its wings to dry. Shuu is impulsive, and fails to properly think things out especially in a social situation (another symptom of bpd is impulsivity, particularly in regards to self-destruction). So he’s bombastic in rushing in and trying to get that Kaneki back, even if he doesn’t exist, and we can argue that this brazenness, this impulsivity, goes on to foster more destruction.

Therefore, it becomes even more weird that Shuu seems to recover after Kanae’s death in particular, because I feel like Shuu was already grappling with some guilt in regards to his past self. Kaneki throwing Shuu from the rooftop is met with Shuu’s acceptance of it - it’s a passive kind of suicidality. What better repentance is there - what is the best way to say sorry - than letting the person you hurt kill you? I know I’ve attempted or hurt myself in attempt to repent and say sorry for the people I’ve hurt, (I even became Christian, briefly!) But Shuu isn’t killed. Kanae is, and directly because they save him. Shuu’s love for Kanae is evident by this point, so one has to question how someone who already seemed to be passively suicidal, who presumably held a quite a hefty amount of self-loathing - would be able to recover from someone they love dying specifically to save them. Shuu tells Kanae to save themself (in my translation), he seemed passive in the prospect of Kaneki killing him, so this turn of events should be absolutely fucking devastating to him.

His entire family, bar one person, were killed to protect him. People gave up their lives, for him - a person who was extremely mentally unwell. Shuu is egotistical, arrogant, and selfish, but too often I see people conflate this with narcissism or self-love - narcissists don’t even tend to love themselves, it seems the opposite (I am not well-versed in npd pls correct me). I don’t think Shuu likes himself, particularly in :re. I’m honestly surprised he survived through :re sometimes, because I feel like the events of the Tsukiyama extermination would eventually kill someone who was already mentally unstable.

But after the Tsukiyama arc, there is very little acknowledgement of Shuu’s mental state. It’s like, oh, he’s fine now. Kanae isn’t even mentioned again, (I think), and it’s really weird. One can argue Shuu is just pretending to be fine, maybe Kaneki being back is enough to shift his focus from those events back to his favourite person - but that’s not mentally healthy. That’s not recovery. You can argue that maybe he learnt to cope, did DBT or whatever, but I doubt he would’ve had time for that in :re? Iirc it was kind of busy, I mean…Man got fired from like 4 jobs after losing his family - self-worth must’ve been in the shitter fr

Shuu is supposedly better by :re and the end of :re, but I can’t fucking buy that. Maybe I’m projecting too much, but I still haven’t recovered from my favourite person and it’ been three fucking years, and I have a parent who is willing to literally die for me, and it feels like shit. These things don’t just go away. They condense, and they stay. It’s like the dog won’t die unless you do, and even then, the pain stays.

I’m off track - the point is. I don’t like it. I get narrative time and that - Shuu isn’t the main character, but still. TG has so much depth and nuance in its characters and I wish more work had been put into Shuu post-Tsukiyama arc. (I also wish Kanae hadn’t died but fuck my stupid Baka life i guess)

I can’t help but feel like Shuu was ill at the start of Tokyo Ghoul, got even iller. And by the end of :re, he’s still very much ill.
