Finally finished TokRev and I have mixed feelings.
I really like that Chifuyu narrated the last chapter,a pretty way to honor his importance;as well that Takemichi fullfiled his promise to Fuyu about bringing Baji back. I always wondered how he intended to do so and just assumed that he wouldn't because it would not make sense, and that is the problem, the ending is like the story was starting another arc at least 50 chapters long. As it is, the end feels empty.
I have seen people having trouble with the way Shinichiro got his powers in contrasts with the way Takemichi and Mikey did but I like it.
The message is really clear, the hobbo got his from killing someone and he ended up with a bad life. Shinichiro killed him and ended dying, leaving his siblings and grandpa lonely and traumatized in Mikey's case. He giving the powers to Takemichi through kindness and Takemichi being the one who is successfully using them is meaningful, the whole point is Shinichiro could have asked kindly for those powers and the outcome would be good but he used violence so everything ended badly.
This theme is connected to those of the main story of "violence is no the way, kindness may be more difficult at the moment, but is more rewarding in the long run and it will take you further in life" and "is more important to be mentally strong than physically, and to do so you need to be vulnerable and trust others, let yourself to feel the good and the ugly, only this way you will live at the fullest".
That being said, I think Mikey's dark impulses should have been him bottling up everything and not a curse. He not allowing himself to feel anything and mourn the deaths of his dad, mom,Shinichiro,Baji and Drakens. That would follow the theme of "you need and should cry,and after doing it you will be ready to move on and become a better version of yourself and live a happier life" that the manga has.
The ending overall felt empty, just because we do not know all this versions of the characters and there is a lot of stuff that is not as easy to resolve as one might like, examples are Kazutora being prone to violence and having a troubled upbringing, the Shiba siblings abuse,Koko and Inupi story and the fire,Izana's mother drama, etc, just to name a few. So,because Takemichi and Mikey should have interfered in all those plot points now the wedding feels empty, like they all are happy, yey! but who are they? Even the way Takemichi and Hina met now must be different, meaning that the core of their relationship and the whole manga changed.
There are two alternative versions of the ending that I think would have been more satisfying:
The one I would have gone for if I was Wakui is letting Takemichi defeat Mikey. Mikey needs to be beaten. Part of the reason he became darker in all the futures is because he feels untouchable and needs to be taken down. This is because his whole self worth is based on him being strong so making him lose for the first time against one of the weakest characters, that also resembles his brother aka the person Mikey admires the most, would be the wake up call he needs. After losing, I think Takemichi should have talked with him ,tell him that is fine if he feels sad, lost or empty, after all his life has been painful, but he needs to let everything out and move on,and that his friends will be with him all the way. Maybe is corny but I think is the easier and most logic way to end the manga. After that Mikey would let his "dark impulses"(that in this version are his repressed feelings and not a curse)out and move on to a better life. Takemichi would make sure for a couple of weeks that Mikey is doing better and everyone else are on the same page, taking care of each other ,and then he would say his goodbyes, or rather see you later, and will go back to the future. End.
In this version everything stays the same up until Mikey kills Takemichi, and in his last moments Takemichi passes the time leap power to Mikey, being Mikey the one who travels to the past and has to fix everything from zero. This will help in the fact that now Mikey is going to have to clean his mess and work to become a better person.
I do not think this will be satisfying because is an open ending tho, but I think is also hopeful and a little better than the one we got that feels empty, but I don't know, you guys tell me what you think.

Oh look, Mika wrote another rant about the end of Tokrev... Yay...
i've been scrolling down my tumblr posts, and i saw that i still had that long ass rambling about the ending of Tokyo Revengers, and boy is it salty and of bad faith, Mika. So instead of rewriting the entire thing, or deleting it like i probably ought to, i'm back for round three (no real spoilers but long af):
First of all, i don't think the ending was actually that bad (in terms of ideas) but the build up to it was so late (can you even speak of a build up then?) that it made the entire thing clumsy and... well, not very good. And i actually have another recent example of a show that i really liked (like, it's really super good) that had an ending i found... lacking at best and disappointing, at worse. Basically two of the main characters die, thirty minutes before the end of the final episode, and then... things get weird, they're not dead, and while it made sense (because of plot and lore reasons) it just- kinda came out of nowhere, and the way they did this was very clumsy.
So basically- great ideas, but terrible execution of them.
Secondly, i realized i really teared into Takehina in my last rambling- i mean post about the ending of tokrev, and i should probably clarify, now that i'm no more salty about it: i don't hate Takehina! i just hate that it could have been a really great ship, but it wasn't (at least not in cannon). Although it did get slightly better in the tenjiku arc, there's a lot of things that bug me about them. They don't seem to be really good for each other in a romantic relationship, they seem much better off as just friends. Takemichi, both the past and the future versions, is a terrible boyfriend, albeit for different reasons (future Takemichi doesn't seem to consider Hina as a romantic option, but the real problem is that he keeps putting other things--and people!--before her, she always comes in second, and that's not cool). And i still think that Hina's evolution as a character regressed because of this relationship. Not that it's a bad thing for a story, characters don't always have to evolve and change for the better, actual humans sure don't, but by the end she just is a trophy wife, and lost all personality.
Which is why, i still think the Takehina wedding is crap, because their relationship wasn't much after the bonten arc. In fact the bonten wedding between them was a much better idea! At that point their relationship was much better, but Takemichi literally gives up his bride-to-be for his best friend sooo.... Maitake wedding then? I'm not sure their relationship is much healthier, actually, it's definitely worse. Takehina might hold each other down (by the time of the final arc, are they really good for each other? If they aren't, aren't they just keeping each other from being truly happy by wanting to stay together still?) but at least they don't bring the worse in the other. I mean, Maitake before the final time travel is basically, Mikey trying to kill Takemichi, and Takemichi trying to save him no matter what. Never said interesting ships were all healthy, did they now? And i don't ship them, but it would have made more sense if they were endgame (and hopefully good for each other).
Although, most ships (or relationships) in this manga aren't really healthy, at least some of the time, if not most of the time. I love Kokonupi, but god these toxic bi*ches! But relationships are never perfect, as long as they keep improving and there is trust, communication, and respect, then things aren't so bad. (Notice how Kokonupi is fundamentally lacking, maybe all components i just cited... until they finally tackle on communication in the final arc... only to have it removed with the ending. I swear i'm no more salty, i just sincerely wonder what their relationship looks like in the new future/present Takemichi made, but wakui wouldn't show me so...)
So Takehina could've been better, and probably should've, but maybe it's just that wakui doesn't know how to write romance (and, it's not really a romance story, so that's fine).
Well, to conclude this, i'm disappointed, but no more salty about this ending. I'll take the good things from it, and disregard the bad. Because i can. Because this is fiction. And because it could be so much worse than just a bad ending. Which, admittedly, isn't the worst ending that ever concluded a story; and as for it being bad: wasn't the first, won't be the last.
I hope this somehow made sense, i am no longer resenting the ending, just disappointed. I'm not sure it was necessary to make a THIRD post about the end of tokrev (was it, Mika?) but this should be the last i make.

@colored-tr-panels made a post some time ago about how the tokrev characters would have flashbacks about them dying, and I haven't stopped thinking about it.
imagine ... (278 spoilers, i guess) current timeline!
Akane and Seishu having an irrational fear of fire.
Kazutora getting goosebumps everytime he goes inside of Shinichiro's shop.
Draken waking up in cold sweat after having another nightmare where Emma dies.
Haru always scratching the sides of his mouth.
Kisaki being extra careful when he crosses the street.
Shinichiro making sure that his shop has the best alarm system because his sixth sense told him to do so.
Senju always thinking that Haruchiyo is mad at her even if they do everything together.
Kakucho being extra worried about Izana when they're with Kisaki.
Ran experiencing a strange feeling of embarrassment everytime he looks at kakucho

No cause I didn't expect so many people to oppose basic math.
But okay don't worry, I'll explain it to you slowly.
Let's start from the beginning. 26 year old Takemichi went back to his 14 year old body. It didn't matter that he's back in time, he's still been alive for 26 years. Therefore making him 26.
Still with me?
He did Toman shit for around a year or so, so by Bonten Arc he was 26/27 (In his 14/15 year old body). He went back in time 10 years, to his 16 year old body. He's still 26/27 though.
That's when the shit goes down with Kanto and bam, he's back in time again to his 8 year old body.
But He Still Lived All Those Years. They Are Not Erased. He Is Still A 27 Year Old Man. If You Disagree Go Read The End Of The Manga, It Will Tell You. (There's Also Pictures In Case The Words Confuse You.)
Now back to the basic Math.
If he's 27 in his 8 year old body, he's 45 in his 26 year old (present day) body. (For this part I used addition, aka the plus (+) sign on the calculator).
By the end of the Manga, Takemichi has lived for 45 years. He remembers all those years. Therefore his brain is 45. And Yes. Yes it does matter.
Think of this bro. If Season 1 Anime Takemichi had done anything mildly sexual with 14 year old Hina, y'all would be up I'm arms because he's 26! But now all of a sudden it's crack to point out his age?
Past Michi almost got it on with Emma, and when future Mitchy woke up he ran away immediately because he knew that she was 13 and he was 26!
When he accidentally grabbed her boob in the hospital, it gave us all the ick because she was 13 and he was 26!
In early manga days we were all saying "Takemichi as a 26 year old running around with these teenagers, you should be doing a lot more critical thinking."
Even in Chapter (I forgot the chapter) when Chifuyu found out the truth, he said something along the lines of "So you're 26? You're kinda a dumbass though". I won't waste my time looking for the panel, I'm already wasting enough time replying to this shit and teaching 'adults' basic addition)
But when it's time for them to get happily-ever-after-married y'all backtrack so quick.
Like the messages I've gotten, God damn.
Some of you guys are so desperate for this ending to be perfect and happy you literally refuse to think for a second.
If I lost you anywhere, feel free to let me know, I'll start over.
Takemichi is 45.
Hina is 26.
She does not know about this.
But yaaaaay happy ending woohoo.
Okay guys.

final thoughts after re-reading tokrev for the 2nd time!
- had to make this a one post because if i do multiple I’ll flood the dash more than I already did 😁🙏 errmmm spoilers!
this is chapter 278 btw like the “last” chapter of the manga !! tb to when I first read this when it came out and i CRIED embarrassing.
— chifuyu starting the chapter in HIS pov was the best idea imo, he’s such a prominent character the whole manga he deserves to end off the manga 🫵🏽
— mikey being a motorcycle racer is such a good idea idk who came up with that but it’s genius and i love it, it literally fits him so well like no joke 😭
— AND DRAKEN being on his mechanical team is PERFECT!!!! them staying together is BEAUTIFUL to me 🙏
— koko and kisaki being business men is very on brand for them since they’re both really really smart but them being business PARTNERS was never something I expected, lowkey I thought we’d see kisaki & hanma together still
— another random thing for me is izana being a director of a non-profit?? like ?? but at least he helped orphans !!!
— ^^ plus mucho being with izana is also interesting I feel like he’d be a business man so like ? BUT kaku helping with orphans is cute and I def see that for him & izana :)
— the haitani’s running a club is VERY on brand for them like I wasn’t even surprised when I first read it 😭 I saw someone say one of them was a DJ ? idk where that came from but sure ‼️
— the akashi siblings (haru & senju) being YouTubers is so fucking funny to me like where tf did that come from 😭 why are they YouTubers??? who thought of that idea 😭😭 pls I need more ppl to talk about it like I never really paid attention to it before so now that I reread it I’m like ??? 😭😭
— but takeomi being a PRODUCER is so fucking silly and I support him in it because he’s so that type of person 😭 he’s definitely the scooter braun of tokrev but not evil as fuck
— are we even surprised shinchiro runs a bike shop? absolutely not 😭 like that’s his entire personality half the manga VERY very on brand for him + he looks good 😁🙏
— inupi working with him is so cute I love inupi sm and he doesn’t have his scar so I think that means he was saved/the fire never happened and I’m happy for him he deserves happiness 🥺🫵🏽
— waka & benkei running a gym is nothing new, and I’m glad they stuck to it in the end 😁
— south makes me giggle hes a fighter which is literally PERFECT for him like it’s so fitting 😭
— not surprised taiju owns restaurants because I think if I’m not mistaken in all the timelines he owns a restaurant like he was definitely destined for it
— hakkai being a model is PERFECT and yuzuha as his manager is BEAUTIFUL like VERY VERY MY STYLE absolutely adore them both!
— MITSUYA AS A FASHION DESIGNER IM SO PROUD OF HIM THIS ENTIRE SERIES HES BEEN A FREAKING DESIGNER AND HES SO BEAUTIFUL AND SO TALENTED AND I LOVE HIM IF YOU COULDNT TELL 😻😻🙀🙀🙀🙀‼️‼️😁😭😭😁‼️‼️
— the beaver duo wbk are rich af and do real estate!
— the twins running a ramen restaurant is so interesting to be because like ik they do it in another timeline BUT like where did that come from 😭
— ngl…as much as I adore hanma being free and being a freelance photographer I feel like it’s very random and not that fitting……like wdym he isn’t with kisaki…IDK BUT HAPPY FOR HIM !!
— naoto looks so silly but I love his journalist job and emma being a house wife I support it but like we couldn’t give my girl, who is a strong and independent woman, her own job? although ik she loves draken and i support them fully so if she’s happy then 😒
— BAJI, FUYU, AND TORA BEING TOGETHER AND WORKING TOGETHER SOBBING SO HARD IM SO HAPPY FOR THEM BAJI IS GONNA BE A VET SOBS AS HE SHOULD FR FR 😭😭😭‼️‼️
— and michi + hina FINALLY getting married 🙏
overall good ending, kinda crazy ngl because technically now the entirety of the manga doesn’t technically exist since they end up going back and fixing it all in the end with the final time leap BUT still so good 😁🙏‼️

Some thoughts on TokRev and Ken Wakui (before reading the ending)
I want to clarify that this is my point of view and that if you have a different one, that's fine (even if you don't agree)! So let's move on.
Let's see, although everyone has a fairly well-argued point about why they don't like the ending, I think that the fact of saying: "these are not my characters" is as true as it is uncertain. I mean, there are things that WILL happen anyway and shape our characters as we know them...
...except for a few incidents that did traumatize them for life (like this: Draken never got over Emma's death and in all futures he lived extremely DEPRESSED; that is, he lived just to live. In fact, I've always had a theory that just like Ash Lynx, in Banana Fish, Draken allowed himself to die protecting Takemichi knowing what would happen to him, and at least now they both have a chance).
For example:
Kazutora will continue to have to survive the mistreatment of her father and the bullying and blackmail of her classmates until he runs into Baji, which is most likely, or another character, and he will have to start to evolve as a person from there (as we saw in several of the extras).
Emma and Draken will continue to be abandoned by their mothers. In fact, when Takemichi arrives in the past, Emma is already with the Sano and, finally, has had to "overcome" that abandonment (I put it in quotes because it doesn't seem like the right word, but now I can't think of another).
In addition, Draken will continue to live in "the massage room" and will see how the girls are prostituted and discarded. That is, he will have to learn to live in that environment and the "little" slavery he suffered from older gang members before becoming Mikey's friend.
Mitsuya and Shiba will meet in the same way and will live exactly the same. However, I want to take a little break here, because NO, I don't think Shiba family life is as good as some people think. In fact, in the color panel of the wedding you can see that Taiju is still quite far from his two little brothers. We will have to read the chapter to draw a little more conclusions, but I think that Taiju will never be able to completely redeem himself from what he did as we saw in the manga.
Izana will continue to be abandoned by all the adults around him, which will mold him as a person until Shinichiro finds him. I think this is the most difficult character to read because of the kind of life he has led, but we will have to wait for the little explanation.
Kakucho will also lose his parents in a car accident (see the scar) and the Sano will lose their father in another, and their mother due to an "illness" (which could be a hidden depression in the play, from my point of view).
And etc etc etc.
I mean, of course, Takemichi and Mikey STILL THE SAME (they are the same characters from the beginning, I mean) and it seems that thanks to that knowledge of the facts they have been able to help the vast majority of the characters (if not all, hahahaha), but they will not be able to control all the incidents in the lives of the characters. Probably, they will have spent many battles with Taiju and Izana, before achieving their objective, which, after all, WAS THE OBJECTIVE OF THEM BOTH. Especially Takemichi, our protagonist.
Actually, this ending can be as counterproductive (because of the rush, more than anything, I have already said it on another occasion), as it is appropriate for what Tokyo Revengers is, since it closes the two conflicts that arose from the beginning: "the loneliness" and "save them all" (and the penultimate chapter finally makes sense of the title and makes the best revenge of all: THE REVENGE OF TRYING TO BE HAPPY!). However, he has done it at the cost of MANY UNSOLVED THINGS (and leaving Shinichiro like the unsalted bread he has been from the beginning, haha). However, this seems to me the least serious of all. Let me explain: AN AUTHOR DOES NOT OWE YOU AN EXPLANATION OF EVERYTHING THAT HAPPENS. Especially IF EVEN THE MAIN CHARACTERS DON'T UNDERSTAND HOW TIME TRAVEL WORKS OR THEY DOESN'T REALIZE THE THINGS THAT, MAYBE, THE SPECTATOR DOES REALIZE.
Also, Takemichi is our main narrator most of the time, and I already said that he's not a smart enough person to notice this "nonsense", or give it due importance, which makes it much easier for the author leave those "loose ends" without endangering the coherence of the work, or the main character.
It is true that doing something like this is a risk and that ignorance works much better in horror works. I also would have liked it to fix some specific points (like, who was spying on Takemichi in the Bonten arc?), but if not, I DON'T DIE EITHER, TRUTH. Because, if you think about it, what the author has done with this part of the story is to make sure that people like me CHECK THE MANGA INFINITELY, hahaha. It's a great tactic, no doubt.
Or those are my conclusions, before reading the ending, of course.
PS: I see a lot of people saying that that wasn't the ending that Wakui wanted to do or that TokRev should have been a seinen... I honestly have no idea how the manga industry works in Japan. I only know that the publisher itself asked Wakui for a story and he created Tokyo Revengers from there. The first shônen of him. There is nothing wrong with TokRev being shônen, in fact, it is thanks to this work and the genre that Wakui has become known worldwide and if you want to read something about gang members and seinen, you can read Shinjuku Swan, one of his earlier works. I don't see a problem with that, really.
What I would worry about is that Wakui hadn't made the ending he wanted. I guess we'll see that over time. But if he really has made the ending he wanted (and had in mind since Bloody Halloween, as he said in an interview), THEN THERE IS NOTHING WE CAN SAY TO HIM IN THAT SENSE (Not that you can't criticize the ending, but insult him, try to convince him day and night to change the ending, send him pictures of them burning his manga for the ending, and generally harass him for the ending he finished picking out. I'm not surprised by this attitude, unfortunately, but it's still CRAZY and a huge lack of respect for the artist). Because, as John Katzenbach said in an interview:
"Do what you want to do. The story you tell should be YOUR STORY. Because a lot of people will come to you and say: You know, if you turn this 16-year-old boy into a 20-year-old girl, the story will be much better. ... No. Tell the story you want to tell and have faith in that. It may or may not work... But you'll be happy in the long run, if you stay true to your own vision."
