R.e. pubs in the uk without decent low (or, not high) sugar non alcoholic options: my go-to is lime and soda, which isn't sugar free (usually) but because it's squash concentrate and soda water it's not super high sugar like coke, or full of artificial sweetener flavour like diet coke.

Also even if they don't have it on a drinks menu, they will (almost) always have it in and will do it if you also.

Hey so wrt pop culture references/references to media within an unrelated media's canon (and maybe fanfic too...?), you've previously said you're not a fan. (I think you mentioned the bit with Tim the Princess bride being jarring and Bad.) I'm curious as to how deep this goes- how do you feel about Shakespeare quotes/references in media, for instance? If it's been around for longer and is more ingrained in society, I wonder if mention of it might hurt the immersion thing less.

Idk feel free to ignore this if you don't want to examine it or don't have the spoons or whatever, this I just my curiosity on your perspective (which fyi I don't share- I feel that these sorts of references aid my immersion in media, by making the world more like my own.)

nah shakespeare and stuff is fine, its just like...stuff that is only One Specific Thing i think? like, okay, if you mention doctor who, i have to assume it’s the BBC show starring very specific people, from William Hartnell in 1963 to Jodi Whittaker in 2021, and i start to go down a weird rabbit hole about actors and release dates and episodes that were specifically referring to real world events, and release dates of the story doing the reference vs the in-universe date, and.....

but if it’s anything in the public domain, where there’s already been countless versions in the real world, then it’s just like...oh, okay, anyone could have told this story with any variations they wanted, it could easily be bent to fit the universe its in. it’s fine, and i can move on.

i dunno, it’s just a Weird Thing that irrationally bugs me.

Serious question: should I get into hiveswap?

If so, how do you recommend?

honestly? i dunno man. it’s my Biggest Special Interest, but it’s.....a really annoying investment for not a ton of payoff for most people i think.

the actual Content is pretty short; we now have act 1, hiveswap: friendsim, and act 2, which probably totals to about....maybe 24 hours? a bit longer, depending on how thorough you are?

and it’s good content! friendsim gave us a ton of really fun and unique character dynamics and a delightful and kind of mind-bending meta plot, and the main games have a lot of good emotional threads about abusive relationships and finding actually good friends, oppression and class warfare, and figuring out you’re gay when you’re a 90s kid who doesn’t know gay people exist. and that’s just in the first two episodes we have currently! the background art is also genuinely gorgeous, theres loads of interesting flavor text, and the soundtrack is a lot of fun! and while it’s a spin-off of homestuck, i don’t THINK it relies on that for worldbuilding too much. it’s hard for me to say since i DID read homestuck first, but it does explain everything pretty well i think.

but. its a game? series? whatever. thats been in development hell for 8 years now, and the core team working on it has been completely replaced like 3 times over the course of that. there’s often like 8 month periods without any new content or even a quick “hey we’re still working on it.” part of me wants to say “wait until all the installments are out before getting into it,” but who fucking knows when that’ll be. probably several more years at least.

so would i recommend it? only if you’re the type of person who wouldn’t get incredibly frustrated following a really good fanfic that sometimes has like, 2 years between updates with no fucking warning. or if you thought bbc’s sherlock had a totally fine and not infuriating release schedule.

as for how to get into it, it’s pretty linear. like i said, you shouldn’t have to read homestuck since it’s all new characters and story (more or less). you only REALLY need to play hiveswap act 1 and act 2, but you really should play all the hiveswap: friendsim volumes before playing act 2. (they arent TECHNICALLY canon since it’s a “friendship simulator” and the main character is...you? sort of? its complicated. the point is it’s all very meta and silly, but the actual characterization IS more or less canon. like extended universe type stuff.)

oh yea, and if you do decide to give it a go, read the fucking content warnings on the friendsim. there’s a LOT of dark comedy and generally fucked up stuff going on.
