i've always taken a one-language-at-a-time approach when it comes to language learning. i did that while i was learning english. i've been doing it since i started learning korean. and although i still wanna focus on korean rn i really wanna try dabbling in italian, no pressure just have fun with it. so my goals are:

short-term goals (1 month) korean: study every day for at least one hour + review some grammar points from yonsei 2-2 + finish ttmik's situational dialogs in korean italian: i just want to have fun with the language and be able to introduce myself

mid-term goals (6 months) english: since i plan on applying to grad school i need to start prepping for the toefl exam + read at least one book in english per month and just maintain my proficiency level korean: be comfortable having at least 30 min long conversations + finish KGIU for beginners + complete keisp's 2-2 korean course italian: be able to understand tweets + have simple conversations in italian

long-term (1 year) english: get toefl's C2 certificate korean: get a TOPIK 3 certificate + read at least one book in korean + hold 1 hour long conversation

note: i’ve defined “short-term” as things i’ll concentrate on in the near future, by the end of the year, and “long-term” as within a year. i did it that way so that my goals more realistic and achievable (SMART goals) ;)

I’m done with me school, with a Toefl prep course and a surgery course. I’ll give myself a day or two to myself. I know it won’t take long till I find my next stuff to do. There’s a neuroanatomy (I think lol) Harvard program I’d love to try. It has 3 courses 4+weeks long. Honestly the brain is the most fascinating organ (to me). I’ll be taking the toefl on May so, I also need to keep myself into it so I won’t forget what I learned.

I’ll still workout; o think my body has gotten used to it and yeah it’s almost 2 months since I started and I know results are.. somewhere 🤣.

I’d love to enroll in this volunteer program “Jesus with the kids” in my country. I’m not religious, but honestly i don’t mind, I’d love to help with kids and yeah this is the only volunteer program that I know of in my country. I’m still thinking about cuz when I did my rotation at the children’s hospital I went through kids with cancer, kids injured with burns, kids suffering domestic violence; it was wild to me. So yeah I’m still thinking about it.

I’ve been talking with a few physicians asking if I could work in their areas, cuz they’re if my interest while I study for the broad exams; and it’s the “no season” for me, lmao. Most of them have replied and explained me why not, others hadn’t even seen the message or even looked at my resume. I know they’re busy but just say no, at least lol. But it’s okay. I understand I just graduated and they want someone with more experience(Idk how they want me to get more experience if nobody gives me the chance!). Anyway, I’ve learned to get “no’s”. And I’m totally okay with it cuz at least I tried. I’ve given my 100% to everything I want, and if they say no, it’s their loss. I’m in peace with myself.

Why MBA?

Like several many in India, I was an engineer. I set up part of wireless mobile network at Huawei Telecommunications. I started as a Graduate Engineering Trainee and soon was working independently, with minimal supervision and later was leading teams. After working for 2 years in various engineering functions I felt that my job was getting repetitive and wanted to try something new.

It is common knowledge in India that MBA is the key to a better salary, changing functions and becoming a Manager. So I was in the process of taking the Common Admission Test (CAT) and it’s siblings XAT, FMS etc. in 2009. Having appeared for those exams in 2006-07 during my senior year of my engineering undergrad, I wasn’t too hopeful. At the same time I came to know of my seniors who had graduated in a year before in 2006. They recently enrolled into institutes like Schulich School of Business at York University, Toronto, Canada and Asian Institute of Management at Philippines, Manilla. I knew about the GMAT exam, but never gave it a serious thought since I never had the money required to pursue a Masters from abroad. My seniors told me that it’s possible to get scholarships based on the GMAT score.

A bulb just lit in my head. “So maybe I’ll crack the GMAT, get a full scholarship, get my MBA and make tons of $$$ - easy!!” I was at 24 and full of hope. I found a used Kaplan GMAT book - erased the pencil marked answers and spent like 2 weeks preparing. I took the GMAT got 600. Not earth shattering and I knew people get into schools with that score. I checked the average GMAT scores under class-profile and most said 550-750. So I believed I was in the ballpark. Since all schools mentioned on their website that they look at candidates holistically and not just the test score, I thought “I will write stellar essays and get through”.

Why do I want to do an MBA? To earn a bucket load of money. Ok, this was simple, but I cannot write that up in my essay. In my essays I wrote that I wanted to pursue a career in Brand Management. I knew very little about marketing as a whole let alone brand management. My experience had no overlap with that business unit. I had no target companies where I would pursue a career post MBA. I had no preference for location. I never cared to connect with anyone working in brand management to learn more. All I really wanted was to make the big bucks. Doesn’t matter how.

I met several people from admission committee (AdCom) during The MBA Tour and QS World MBA. I had good conversations with everyone including Mason School of Business - College of William and Mary. So In addition to Mason, I applied to schools like Kelley at Indiana University, Case Western Reserve in Cleveland, Wake Forest University etc. 

Meanwhile, I retook the GMAT since statistically speaking, people see an improvement of 70 points on their 2nd attempt. First section AWA. Done, next up was Quant. Like most Indian applicants I had little trouble with mathematics so quant is kinda easy. Section over, now comes the Achilles’ heel – Verbal. I knew GMAT was an adaptive test. It was critical for me to get the first few questions correct, otherwise my score will dip. One by one I answered the questions to what I thought was correct. After all it sounded right to my ears when I spoke it in my mind. I mean, I communicated in English just fine! I gave TOEFL without any prep scored 105 off 120. I was taught in English throughout. Heck I was into AC/DC and The Beatles. 

At the end of the exam, I had a choice to see my score and submit or to cancel. My heart was pounding, I was sweating, I was praying for a good score to flash on the screen. What will it be? 650, 680, 720?

After the anxiety comes the feeling of dejection. But I had hope. I had good conversation with several AdComs I meet during the MBA fair. I decided to focus on my application. Wrote essays, reached out people for recommendation. Completed and submitted my applications. I was awaiting information on the next steps. I couldn’t sleep well. Was getting up early to check my email since it would be evening in the US when people would have replied.

I was elated to see an Interview invite from College of William & Mary! I suited up at midnight India time for my telephonic interview with Amanda Barth. The interview started well, but during the conversation she asked me “Why do you want to do MBA?” I panicked, words weren’t coming into my mind. I choked and bombed the interview. Few days later, got the result. Denied. Which was a common theme for all my applications – most without even an interview. 

I was devastated. Not only had I spent so much money and effort I lost a year of the admission cycle. I locked myself away from everyone and everything for the next 5 months. I had many questions, “Why do I really want to get an MBA?” “Why do I feel that I have reached a ceiling in my career?” “Why does my job feels repetitive?” Earning money was a byproduct, cannot be the cause.

I reached out to several current students, alumni, AdComs and tried to better understand what makes an MBA student employable at the end of a 2 year program? How is that students come in thinking they would do Finance ends up doing Marketing? Then I slowly started to see myself from skills point of view. What skills do I have now? What skills am I missing for the job that I want to do? The difference is my skill gap. Can the MBA help me bridge that skill gap?

 A Year

March, the previous year... 

She carried around her SAT and TOEFL Prep book everywhere. Writing and rewriting countless essays, she did all she could to score higher on the standardized tests.  This was the only way she knew how not to lose to her outstanding peers. “After all, Asians all had perfect scores, right?” Another 2 AM study session, she once again logged out from the school's official website, turned off the computer, and went to bed still thinking about all the IB topics she will be tested on tomorrow at school in her mind. "Now I can definitely get accepted" She said to herself, "As long as I get admitted to the top 30 universities in the United States, my life will be better, right?"

May, she got in! For the first time in a year, she felt complete and pure bliss. She read the letter of admission again and again and couldn't help but look forward to her upcoming university life.

September. She embarked on her journey as an International student studying alone in the United States. She no longer looked like everyone else. In a foreign country, her yellow skin and black hair stood out. Sometimes, people would inevitably stare at her from afar, but she didn't care. As long as she was getting a top-notch education, nothing else mattered. 

October. Two months have passed since school started, but she still had no friends. Although she has tried her best to socialize and assimilate into the American community, it was still very difficult as if there was always an invisible wall in between them.

November. She made a friend, Ashely, an Asian American girl. Unlike her, Ashely's cool red hair made her very confident at school. She was so excited to finally have a friend to talk to. However, every time Ashely came to her, it was always followed by a question "Could you do me a favor and let me copy the answers for Multivariable Calculus?" She said to her with a pleading smile. "Ah, I'm not sure if my answers are correct......" "It's alright, you’re Chinese." Seeing her homework was taken away by Ashely, she frowned, but didn't say anything. You are Chinese. Ashely’s words echoed in her ears. Was that all she was to her only friend? 

December. Ashely took her to a club for the first time. Loud music, dazzling lights, noisy crowds, it was a completely new world. She suddenly regretted coming here as the white man who smelled of alcohol stepped closer to her and placed his hands on her bare shoulders. The close distance made her feel nauseous and uncomfortable. So nervous to move, she stumbled on her words, "please...excuse me...don't...." Seeing her reluctant resistance, the boy walked away impatiently. She saw Ashely coming over and wanted to tell her what happened. "Look at you, don't act so fobby!" Ashely interrupted her cry for help and labeled her fobby. She was speechless, FOB—fresh off the boat, she knew exactly what it meant.

January. Covid-19 broke out and she failed to buy a plane ticket back to China. After receiving countless calls and packages from her parents, she carefully made every protection that she could. But when she went out wearing a mask, "Stay away! ", "don't spread the germ, I don't want to get sick!" "You Chinese chink..." ......

......

Another March. She has finally paid an overpriced plane ticket to get back. She looked out the window; the sky was the same as how it was last year when she came to the US. The sun blazed down, but she could hardly feel the warmth. The better life that she dreamed seemed so far away. The perfect scores she strived for back home no longer seemed as crucial as the injustice she, and so many of her peers, faced. She didn’t want what she experienced to happen to anyone else, and this time, she would do something. Under the heavy protection suit, part of her red hair can be seen.
