For some reason, I had the part of that song with Kodo and Kazama's final confrontation from Kazama-hen in my head today despite not having listened to it in quite a while... guess something's telling me that I should go watch Kazama-hen instead of Shinkai Hijikata-hen, which I've only seen the switching camera version of? 😂

Anyway, this is this week's translation!

Toudou: Hey, Sano-san, Shinpach-san, if you want to head out, go now... Uh, Hijikata-san and Sannan-san?

Hijikata: What is it, Heisuke.

Sannan: What are you trying to do in such a hurry?

Toudou: Ah, no, um...

Hijikata: That's right, Heisuke, come sit down over here.

Toudou: Eh? Um, I… have something urgent to do with Sano-san and Shinpach-san...

Hijikata: Harada and Shinpachi went out earlier. They were probably going to Shimabara anyway. There even enjoying themselves/fooling around during the day.

Toudou: No... damn it... those two left me behind!

Hijikata: Oh? What's wrong?

Toudou: No, it, it's nothing!

Hijikata: Is that so. Hey, Heisuke, quickly sit down.

Toudou: Ah! Right! Let me bring those two back.

Sannan: Bring back... is it?

Toudou: Seriously, Sano-san and Shinpach-san, they're really troublesome. Going to Shimabara in the middle of the day.

Hijikata: I guess you're going to go with them too.

Toudou: No way! How could that be! After all, I'm the one always stopping those two.

Sannan: Toudou-kun?

Toudou: That's right, but no matter how much I try to stop them, they still won't listen.

Sannan: I see, that's quite a problem.

Hijikata: It's amazing that you, who usually likes to mess around, would actually stop them.

Toudou: That's right. I mean, those two get drunk and cause commotions in broad daylight.

Sannna: What do you mean by commotions?

Toudou: It's something they always do. Things like Sano-san boasting about the scar on his stomach and Shinpach-san bragging about his arm muscles. Ah, the other day/a few days ago, they were arm wrestling and the loser had to drink sake! It was really terrible.

Hijikata: What, you must been drinking with them too.

Toudou: Ah...

Sannan: Although I understand how you feel, it really is not commendable for a Shinsengumi executive to get drunk and then cause trouble in broad daylight.

Toudou: Ah, how should I put it, those two people insisted…

Sannan: If they insisted, then you should have refused even more. Rejecting other is a type of strength, Toudou-kun.

Hijikata: Be a bit more mature. Heisuke.

Toudou: What, why are you're saying that just to me! Are those two much better/Aren't those two more outrageous? Anyway, I have to bring Sano-san and Shinpach-san back!

Hijikata: In that case, there's no problem. The two of them didn't go out. T

Toudou: Huh?

Sannan: Thanks to Todou-kun, we now have a good idea of what Harada-kun and Nagakura-kun were secretly doing behind our backs.

Toudou: How could that be――what the hell were Sano-san, Shinpach-san doing!

Hijikata: Those guys went to that person's room. Harada brought tangerines.

Sannan: It's not right for two guys to barge into a girl's room.

Hijikta: Isn’t that better than going out to drink during the day?

Toudou: Huh? That's not better, that's a much bigger problem than going to Shimabara! What's with that excuse! Those two…!

(Heisuke rushes outside)

Hijikata: Seriously. When will he start behaving like an adult/he grow up/get more mature? I can't help but think he's entirely driven by his emotions.

Sannan: Yes, that's true. But, isn't that Toudou-kun's strength?

Hijikata: Ah, yeah. There's no difference.

Hakumyu Kazama-hen thoughts!

1. I really like Kazama’s make up, it doesn’t seem overdone and helps accentuate his arrogant, regal persona. <3

2. I just wanted to point out how cool Ikeda Junya is as Heisuke. <3

3. NEW SANOSUKE??? NEW AMAGIRI???? NEW YAMAZAKI????? I like that Amagiri now has a bass voice like in the games.

4. The songs have a slightly different arrangement now, with a dash of oni rock. I’m not sure if I’m digging it. Maybe it’s because I’m attached to the old arrangements.

5. I kinda preferred the old Oni no Matsuei tune. Maybe because it’s more upbeat. ^^” (listening to it again, it’s growing on me. It’s catchy at parts, and quite mood-appropriate)

6. Oh god is this a pseudo-Heisuke route? So much Heisuke scenes here and he’s sooooo adorable!!

7. The sake scene was actually pretty heart-warming. <3 It seems like everyone was having fun. ^^

8. A lot of the elements of the story was changed since Kazama is the main guy. (e.g Heisuke confronting Okita about his illness instead of Chizuru) I don’t dislike it. At least it wasn’t swept under the rug. (it always pains me in the game when I have to ignore the problems some of the guys face TT)

9. Whoah, Sanan changed to his rasetsu wig really quickly! *Sanan does some crazy acrobatics shit* Oh... different guy eh. The body double thing is actually pretty smart. owob (Yamazaki’s part too)

10. The story element changes makes everything way sadder and painful. Ughhh. TT Shinsengumiiiii. I like that they try to feature each characters more, even Yamazaki.

11. Kazama in this musical seems less arrogant. He’s just... melancholic. :’( In a good way though. It feels fitting.

12. There’s so many new songs, and they seem musically more challenging to sing, yet Suzuki Shogo and Tomita Maho done such a great job.

13. You’re totally in love with her, huh? Heisuke. TT

14. Okita in a yukata! *^* ...oh wait. You’re in love with her too, huh? TT </3

I’ve shared before how Kazama-hen was the most emotional for me. Because of how well each Shinsengumi member was portrayed, and their relationship with each other. Their struggles, up until their deaths... It was painful to bear. It was well delivered, since in the game, we mostly only receive the bad news by word of mouth. On top of that, the music was amazing. Especially the ones that included the entire Shinsengumi (Yume no Hate). This is kinda weird to say, since it’s “Kazama-hen” and Kazama was supposed to be the protagonist, haha. But honestly, it felt more like a Shinsengumi story. I enjoyed the feels. ;w;

I’ve watch Okita-hen (soon I’ll watch even Kazama-hen and Saito-hen). But, even if I’ve seen only ONE of the musicals, now I understeand why most of the fans are in love with Junya Ikeda.

Only for information, because I've see Okita-hen and I think I fall in love with Ikeda Junya ( i mean...his smile...) and I really like to see the musical where he is the protagonist, even if it's without sub. Well, I know the game like the palm of my hands so I think I'll understeand the most part of the musical. XD

Ao no Exorcist: Kyoto Fujouou-hen – 09

Todou’s “join me” schtick doesn’t work, as Yukio tells him he loves Rin as much as he hates him, but hates the old Yukio who was a sniveling little punk always in need of Rin’s help.

Yukio summons a coven of naiads and puts Todou in a water prison. I’m glad Exorcist isn’t playing the “Yukio switches sides” angle here, and that Yukio actually gets one over on Todou in what had been a laughably one-sided match.

As for Rin, he’s trying to stay positive and cheerful while riding Kuro to the sproangium, but Bon can tell from his shaking hands that Rin’s just trying to keep it together, like he is. Kuro gets them into position, and Bon is able to put up a giant fire barrier to contain the sporangium (during which a phoenix screams like a red-tailed hawk for some reason).

As all his family and friends fight what looks like a hopeless battle, Shino is consumed by fear and self-preservation, even going so far as to abandon Koneko when he refuses to run away. Shino only gets a few paces away before Koneko is about to be killed and he swoops in with his staff. As much as he wants to run from this situation—and his blood—he just can’t. He’s a part of this.

Meanwhile, Izumo lets her guard down while admonishing Shiemi for not letting herself be protected by someone stronger, and gets covered in spores. Using the “if not now, when” argument, a desperate Shiemi finally manages to summon Nee-chan, and prepares to free Izumo, who takes time to ponder why she agreed to all this in the first place.

Despite everyone’s efforts, the sporangium still bursts, and it feels like a huge setback when it happens. Fortunately the barrier holds, but that Bon can’t move if he wants to keep it up is a huge challenge for Rin and Kuro.

Rin almost felt like he could unsheathe his sword when Kuro was in trouble (Kuro gets out of it on his own); I imagine the time is quickly approaching when, like Shiemi with Nee-chan, Rin can’t go without its blade any longer.

As for Yukio, his water prison crumbles and he’s about to get burnt alive by Todou, but his eyes suddenly glimmer with blue flame—like Rin—which causes Todou to instinctively jump back.

Before Todou can get back to killing Yukio—or Yukio can determine what the hell’s up with his eyes—Juzu & Co. arrive to fight Todou. But yeah, those blue eyes are definitely an interesting development.

This is from the Heisuke-hen backstage video, and takes place during one of the curtain calls. My dear Ryosuke Mikata was complaining about everyone wanting to kill his character or something along those lines (my Japanese is really limited 😭) and this happens right after that.

He’s adorable!! 😭 And look at Junya and Shogo joining in to shout “daisuki”!

My thoughts on Hakumyu: Heisuke-hen

I’ll probably talk about it comparing it to Harada-hen, since it’s the only other Hakumyu I’ve watched.

First of all, Junya Ikeda is PERFECT as Heisuke Todou. His cheerful behaviour, the way he talks, how he jumps around,... It really feels as if we were listening to Heisuke. He’s so cute at the beginning when he’s asking the public if there’s a festival or something!

I still prefer Karin Isobe as Chizuru, but Marina Tanoue was a good choice for this route. Seeing how she jumps around during curtain call makes me think she’s a good Chizuru for Heisuke.

And speaking about curtain call, what about the Yuusuke Kashiwagi vs Naota Gomoyo demon jumping face-off? XD I wanted to see that.

I feel sad that Marina and Erika Yanagita just had a few scenes as Chizuru and Sen, they were so cute together :( I hope we get to see more of Sen in future Hakumyus.

I must admit I couldn’t tell the actor for Sannan was different. I love both Ryosuke Mikata’s and Teruma’s performance,

Regarding the rest of the cast, I prefer the actors in Harada-hen (not that the cast of Heisuke-hen performed badly, is just a matter of personal preference).

On the subject of characterization, they dealt better with the Furies’ wigs, at least when it came to Heisuke’s and Sannan’s. You couldn’t see their hair underneath, or at least it wasn’t as noticeable as in Harada-hen. Also, props to whoever had to change Ryosuke’s wigs, since he changes several times in a row at the beginning of the musical. However. HOWEVER. There is something I must address. Some of you have already seen my post about it. WHO THOUGHT KODO’S FAKE BALD CAP WAS OKAY?? Who let poor Manji Edogawa go on stage like that?

As for the songs, they are more like proper, long songs that the ones in Harada-hen. I love the overall theme and rhythm they have, as lively as Heisuke. Also, Kinniku Drunkards XDD

I really like they way they show us there’s a special bond between Sannan and Heisuke, and I find it’s even more noticeable than in the game. Though I found it really funny when, during the final battle, Sannan starts singing with a gloomy music that suddenly changes into a cheerful tune and he starts talking about them being comrades.

Other things about this final battle that I really enjoyed are the bit of Yaisa! in which you can see how everyone else is fighting no matter where they are, and Sannan’s death. It was extremely beautiful, with the cherry blossom petals and all, one of the most beautiful and emotive deaths I’ve seen on a stage.

I didn’t mind the story changes, they are not that big or important and I don’t think there were any loose ties. And thanks for not showing everyone as a Fury like in Harada-hen.

And I don’t remember if there was something else I wanted to say... Overall, I like Heisuke-hen a lot more than Harada-hen. Next will be Okita-hen!

THE SOUMA-HEN CAST HAS BEEN ANNOUNCED

Or at least, most of it.

Hi, humans and oni, all fans of Hakumyu. This morning I woke up with a Twitter notification telling me that the official Hakumyu Twitter had posted something, and the tweets bore the long-awaited information: THE CAST!!!

It's my first time experiencing a cast reveal since I started watching Hakumyu, so I was really looking forward to it!!!!

Mizuki Umetsu (梅津瑞樹) is Kazue Souma

26 years old, his Twitter is @MizukiUmetsu, and he's been in Musical Touken Ranbu.

Risa Matsuzaki (松崎莉沙) is the new Chizuru Yukimura

She’s a member of Roys, a Japanese female duo chorus group. Her Twitter is @risadegozaimasu and she’s 23 years old.

Hidetoshi Kubota (久保田秀敏) is Toshizo Hijikata

He’s had roles in films and Tenimyu before. He's 32 years old and his Twitter is @kubotahidetoshi.

Shogo Yamazaki (山﨑晶吾) is back as Souji Okita!!

27 years old, his Instagram is @yamazakishogo, and he first appeared in Hakumyu in Shitan Hijikata-hen!

Shoichiro Oomi (大海将一郎) is Hajime Saito

I can't find much info about him in English, and in Anime News Network they only mention three previous roles. His Twitter is @shoichiro_oomi. According to said Twitter, he's been in the Hitman Reborn stage.

Both Yutas, Yuta Higuchi (樋口裕太) and Yuta Kishimoto (岸本勇太) are back as Heisuke Todou and Shinpachi Nagakura!

Their first Hakumyu was Shitan Hijikata-hen.

Yuta Higuchi is 24 and he won a Junon Superboy contest (Most Photogenic) and according to Anime on Stage he's been in other myus/stage plays, like Ensemble Stars and Yona of the Dawn. His Twitter is @higuchi24yuta.

About Yuta Kishimoto, he's been in the Hypnosis Mic stage and his Twitter is @YUTA_KISHIMOTO.

Shouta Kawakami (川上将大) is Sanosuke Harada

Teruma (輝馬) is back as Keisuke Sannan!

I'm really happy to see this! I still prefer Ryosuke Mikata, but he's showed that he deserves the role, so I hope he stays in Hakumyu for the years to come!

Taizo Shiina (椎名鯛造) is back as Susumu Yamazaki!

First appeared in Shitan Hijikata-hen, and he's been in Sengoku Basara and Danganronpa stage plays, among others. His Twitter is @TaizoShiina.

And last but certainly not least, Taira Imata (井俣太良) is back again as Isami Kondou!!!

Best dad since Okita-hen (second Hakumyu) and by this point, everyone's senpai, what else can be said about this man??? If you've watched any Hakumyu other than Saito-hen, you already know him. Great man and actor, he's 44 and his Twitter is @TAIRANT1975.

I've played Kyoto Winds, Edo Blossoms. I’ve watched the anime and 4 other musicals. I’ve seen the story many times, I knew how it went. I knew who turns into a rasetsu, and who dies. But this is the first time I've cried watching Hakuouki. Twice, too. Hakumyu Kazama-hen is like a carefully woven farewell love letter to the Shinsengumi. Thank you so much for the feels.
