Live this Life
A/N - Written from an image that popped in my head this weekend. No new episodes leaves my mind wandering. And something I never thought I’d ever say in a Densi ficlet – Spoilers for Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone.
--- --- --- --- ---
Giggling. Laughing. An effortless transition from English to Spanish and back, with more laughing for good measure. Deeks is ten feet from the entrance to the kitchen just taking in the love. The way Rosa speaks slowly and carefully in English and rapidly like a teenage girl in Spanish. The way Kensi hangs on every word. The way adding Rosa to their lives increased their responsibility but lightened their hearts. The way it took no time to feel like a family.
“I’m back,” he calls from where he is, announcing his presence before he intrudes on their moment. The two of them appear in the doorway, blocking it. Smiling. Hip to hip, not inviting him any closer.
The smell of something delicious and unknown to him is in the air, and they both look like they are up to something.
“Alright, what’s going on in there?”
“In here?” Kensi deflects. “Nothing out of the ordinary. Just a kitchen. Doing kitchiny things.”
Rosa nods quickly in agreement but has a hint of nervousness that accompanies her smile. Kensi’s arm is around her, and Kensi gives the young girl a quick squeeze before she steps forward to Deeks. She greets him with a kiss and tells him to go shower.
He pretends to try and look around Kensi, and Rosa goes up on her tip-toes and makes her small frame larger to block more of his view. He gives up dramatically for effect, and as he heads to the stairs Kensi catches him with a towel on his butt making him laugh and go faster.
Deeks takes his time. A long hot shower washing off the surf from the mid-morning and the run from the afternoon. When the twosome went out shopping this morning he was intrigued. When they got home with bags they wouldn’t divulge the contents of he was suspicious. Now he can see they have a family night planned, and he is on cloud nine.
His night. His family. A longing that’s been met with these beautiful souls.
When he returns to the main floor, the table is set and the last of the food is being placed. The aroma that fills the house is the definition of delicious, and he stops in amazement.
“What is all this?”
“Chilaquiles,” Rosa explains. It’s a specialty in my town. My mom’s were always the best.” She says it with pride and not sadness.
“Well, I can’t wait to try it.”
Rosa teaches him to plate it correctly – the right amount of totopos, they right amount of her chorizo and chicken mixture, the right amount of cheese. He insists she teach him and let him do it. He listens and follow instructions like he is doing a chemistry experiment and there is a perfect ratio to be achieved. Thirty minutes later, they aren’t sure they can move they’ve eaten so much.
“Todotos?” Deeks says, trying to remember the word Rosa taught him just moments before for the small fried pieces of corn tortilla.
She giggles at his attempt. “Totopos,” she reminds him, and he says it a few times to get it to sink in. When Rosa makes a move to clear the table, Deeks jumps in to counter.
“Sit,” he tells her, gently putting his hand on her shoulder. “The lovely ladies of this house did all the cooking this evening. I need to pull my weight.” Dishes stack in his hands and he jokes with them. “Which will be considerably more soon if you guys keep cooking like that.” Rosa beams under his praise, a slight blush coming to her face and her chin coming to her shoulder. Her smile is bright. Deeks leans over close to her ear. “And she never cooked like this before you,” he whispers as he gestures to Kensi with his head.
Now both ladies laugh as he moves to the kitchen and they relocate to the living room. When the dishes are clean and the leftovers away, he joins them. Rosa is sitting criss-cross in the corner of the couch, Kensi in the middle. When she sees Deeks coming, she slides over and gives him the space in between. He’s grateful. He would never say that he’s jealous of Kensi’s relationship with Rosa, but there are moments that just come more naturally to them. He has to work a little harder for ways to connect.
“There was a ton of dinner left over. You guys made enough for an army.”
Rosa laughs and explains. “It’s also breakfast in Mexico. You heat it up in the morning and put an egg,” she pauses and says something in Spanish to Kensi, who gives her the English words and she continues. “You put a sunny side up egg on top.”
“Well, breakfast is my specialty, so tomorrow maybe you can teach me how to put that together. You did the hard part today.”
Rosa nods enthusiastically.
“Good, but first, tonight. What are my girls planning for the rest of our evening?”
“Movie night,” Kesni says excitedly.
“And we have everything ready to make sopapillas,” Rosa adds.
“Well let’s pick a long movie so I have time to build up my appetite again after that feast.”
“Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone,” Rosa tells him.
Deeks’ head turns from one to the other. “Was that her choice?” he asks Rosa pointing at Kensi.
“I’ve heard of Harry Potter, but I’ve never seen it.”
“Harry Potter it is,” Deeks agrees, and pulls it up on their streaming menu. No popcorn needed because they are so full. He gets everyone some ice water, and tosses some throw pillows and blankets at the couch before he settles back in for the start of the movie.
And there they are, a regular family on a Saturday night. Laughing, eating, being together. The warmth it gives him radiates with such energy he wonders if he glows. He hears Callen’s voice in his head telling him he would have killed for parents like Deeks and Kensi, but Deeks knows he’s the lucky one.
He worries about the content as the movie rolls along. Harry lost his parents. The Dursley’s take Harry in and keep him under the stairs. They make him cook. They take things from him. They keep things from him. That part of it never registered with him until he watches next to Rosa. He peeks at her to make sure she’s ok.
Rosa is enamored. The spells and the friendships. The idea of finding a new place that feels like home. She’s tense during the quidditch match. She leans into Deeks and his heart skips a beat. But then the tension takes a dark turn. Voldemort offers to bring Harry’s parents back if he gives up the Sorcerer’s Stone.
Rosa’s hand snakes under his and she threads her fingers between his and squeezes. Her face wears the weight of Harry’s choice. Tears well in his eyes when he sees the tears that have welled in hers.
He can’t help but think about this amazing young woman next to him. How much she’s already been through. How he would already move mountains to protect her from more pain. How close Rosa is to the age Kensi was when she landed on the street. How much he would have given at her age for a movie night with a dad who loved him.
How it’s never too late to make a difference in a child’s life.
How it’s never too late to find a family.
How he hopes there are more moments like this with Rosa, and other kids as well.
How he can’t believe he gets to live this life.

more jjk theorizing
I assume we haven't seen the last of Todo so it'll probably all come out in time, but I wonder if he's the same type of thing as Yuji. I mean, like Yuji, he is freakishly, inexplicably strong. He could have been a prototype for Yuji. Hell, Yuji could have been a prototype for something else. We also don't know exactly what caused Todoto be scouted for jujutsu tech.
The encounter with Choso made me think, it was played off as a joke, but if Choso and Yuji really are brothers, and Choso experiences the same symptoms Todo does, perhaps Todo and Yuji are brothers in the same way.
