@tozettastone suggested i write akatsuki!minato and i have concluded the funniest way to write it would be obito's POV. one member has some sort of wild off-screen adventure that results with them obtaining a time traveled/undead/etc minato and now minato is stuck with them and obito has to play it cool. he is not

In what ways does undertale's themes drop the ball? I feel like they do as well, but I only really see the criticisms you mentioned in your post by the online fandom at large.

the sans fight is cool and fun and has a sick music track. it should have fucking sucked it should have been literally on the same level as the stanley parable baby game. it should have been impossible without an autoclicker and been super fucking tedious with one. it should have been desert bus.

like i don't think that what undertale is every trying to say is 'killing video game characters is morally wrong in real life'. i think it's clearly, in chara and flowey--who are obviously positioned as Players of video games--is trying to explore what (at least to toby fox) is an unhealthy and unsatisfying way of playing games. the need to maximize the amount of 'content', the need to experience everything in a game even when it's not fun anymore. i think the way that flowey talks makes this very clear:

like obviously diegetically this kind of stuff is meant to go towards making a point of how detached flowey is from his moral reality but i think non-diegetically this is pretty clearly speaking to a way of engaging with games that toby fox thinks sucks the fun out of them. flowey isn't connected to the contents of undertale because he didn't play it for fun, he played it to extract the maximum amount of Content, to see every possible combination of events, to get all the endings, etc.

the rest of no mercy route isn't fun. killing enemies once you've levelled up at all is boring and barely interactive, walking around in circles to spawn every single random encounter is boring, you miss out on substantial amounts of content--the humour and dialogue, etc. and that's the point! i don't think the intended emotional effect of the empty misery of the no mercy route is to make you think 'i'm a bad person for killing video game characters' it's to make you think 'is this even fun? what am i even getting out of this?' or in short--

unfortunatley i think the sans fight being very cool and becoming iconic of the game kind of fumbles that very very hard becaues it does make the murder everybody route ultimately rewarding--it gives players the Content that i feel like the entire writing and metanarrative of the game is setting up to not exist, and so i think it absolutely fails to stick the landing.

i havent seen wicked but i looked into the song after receiving this and yes. true. especially certain lines like "whenever i see someone less fortunate than i, and lets face it, who isnt less fortunate than i?" and "you'll be popular, just not quite as popular as me!" remind me of graham for sure, considering how he talks down to cathal in MOTM in order to give himself that boost of confidence.

i've always felt like people overcomplicate selling homestuck to people. like dude, you don't need to tack on podcasts made by middle aged literary folk for them to listen to, you don't need to give them history lessons, you don't need to go on and on with all these accolades or warnings. this diefication of a webcomic is what made people think we were annoying back in the day and even now, instead of just being like "hey, this is a cool webcomic".

I just remembered this post that went around a while ago about like boring guys in media who get overhyped and it included sans undertale and soul “soul eater” evans soul eater on it. Shit made me so mad. You dont fucking know anything . Now if the post was about guys who get overhyped compared to characters who arent guys and are just as good if not better. Sometimes I play around with the idea Cyber City has a very strict heirchy of citizens and addisons are usually menail workers whether they like it or not. They are needed to run things but are in such abundance a lot of non addisons citizens see them as expendable. 

I feel like this is why Spamton’s rise was such a big thing because it’s rare for addisons to get into very important positions let alone ones that are so in your face such as the number one rated salesman of the cyber world! I imagine he was a legend to most addisons only making the strain with the addisons he knew worse cause now people only came to them cause they used to know him instead of the other way around.

Spamton to a lot of ads would become a legend, a cautionary tale, a success story and a tragedy and I think of that a lot.

i love this whole scene for many reasons (it's another example of dunnett just being really good at writing confrontations), but it's kind of heartbreaking that at this point in the story the men around nicholas have barely any sympathy for him?

it's like they only see the machiavellian mastermind, and that part of nicholas is there, but in this moment specifically he's a 21 y.o with high fever laying in bed being accused of terrible things that don't even make sense.

tobie takes care of his body, and godscalc tries to take care of his soul, but what ties them to nicholas, besides duty, is curiosity. and i think sometimes that makes them regard him with coldness, because nicholas is there to be studied. tobie is constantly analyzing him like he's a character in a novel (heh) instead of a real human being.

this being a reread, though, it's rewarding to read scenes like this knowing these same characters end up, however reluctantly, being very loyal to nicholas and following him not for duty or curiosity, but genuine affection. no one is immune to the oak tree with dimples (except his father and grandfather, i guess. yikes)
