By Eric Hoffer (LA Times 5/26/68)
The Jews are a peculiar people: things permitted to other nations are forbidden to the Jews.
Other nations drive out thousands, even millions of people and there is no refugee problem. Russian did it, Poland and Czechoslovakia did it, Turkey threw out a million Greeks, and Algeria a million Frenchman. Indonesia threw out heaven knows how many Chinese-and no one says a word about refugees. But in the case of Israel the displaced Arabs have become eternal refugees.
Everyone insists that Israel must take back every single Arab. Arnold Toynbee calls the displacement of the Arabs an atrocity greater than any committed by the Nazis.
Other nations when victorious on the battlefield dictate peace terms. But when Israel is victorious it must sue for peace. Everyone expects the Jewsto be the only real Christians in this world.
Other nations when they are defeated survive and recover but should Israel be defeated it would be destroyed. Had Nasser triumphed last June he would have wiped Israel off the map, and no one would have lifted a finger to save the Jews.
No commitment to the Jews by any government, including our own, is worth the paper it is written on. There is a cry of outrage all over the world when people die in Vietnam or when two Negroes are executed in Rhodesia. But when Hitler slaughtered Jews no one remonstrated with him.
The Swedes, who are ready to break of diplomatic relations with America because of what we do in Vietnam, did not let out a peep when Hitler was slaughtering Jews. They sent Hitler choice iron ore, and ball bearings, and serviced his troop trains to Norway.
The Jews are alone in the world. If Israel survives, it will be solely because of Jewish efforts. And Jewish resources. Yet at this moment Israel is our only reliable and unconditional ally. We can rely more on Israel than Israel can rely on us. And one has only to imagine what would have happened last summer had the Arabs and their Russian backers won the war to realize how vital the survival of Israel is toAmerica and the West in general.
I have a premonition that will not leave me; as it goes with Israel so will it go with all of us. Should Israel perish the holocaust will be upon us.

Oh--I'm not necessarily the person to speak on modern Central and Eastern European and Central Asian identities, but: I will, generally, comment on usage of the words "Soviet" and "Russian". No, this is not my most charming habit. And no, it's not meant as a judgement, so much as for clarity.
I try to use them really specifically, ie if I describe something as Russian before 1991 I'm talking about something that's either within the historic territory, like Moscow, or has to do with ethnic/cultural ideas of Russian-ness. Modern Russian-ness includes both the experiences and identities of actual Russian people and the way that other people have been pressured to take up or just written into that identity.
Since athletes have been so extensively used to represent Imperial Russia or the Soviet Union and a colonial Russian-ness, a lot of the people I'm interested in are known to the world as "Russians" who...might or might not be. Vaslav Nijinsky and Rudolf Nureyev, for example--maybe the two most beloved and most influential male dancers in world history--are completed associated with "Russian ballet". But one was from Kyiv and the other explicitly credited his art to his Muslim identity and denied being ethnically or culturally Russian. I just think that's fascinating. So much is going on there in their legacies and our memories, you know?
One of the most fascinating threads I've stumbled onto is that, at least by what I can find, Valeri Kharlamov, the face of Russian hockey, wasn't born a Soviet or Russian citizen. He was born in Moscow, but at the time his mother Begonita was legally a refugee, not a citizen, so his father couldn't marry her, and because of how legal maternity worked, that he wasn't legally his father's child, which otherwise might have been a path to citizenship. According to what I can find, for the first several days after he was born he didn't have any legal documents. It was only because Spain and the Soviet Union were negotiating terms for the refugees around that time that things changed, and they were able to marry.
But even then, what they agreed to was that Soviet women who married refugee men could leave the USSR for Spain; Soviet men could not leave with Spanish women. (This strikes me as an example of how patriarchy is shit for everyone, because this was pretty shit for Boris Kharlamov. Basically, his body and labor were just seen as more worth keeping.) Begonita and Boris were living together in a primarily Spanish-speaking community and he really wanted to come to Spain with her, but this meant that 1) if she ever wanted to find out if her parents had survived the war, she would have to leave him, and 2) Russian masculinity and paternity was explicitly confirmed as being seen as central to identity.
(Valeri himself is often described as not wanting to leave the Soviet Union, but that's actually not true, he just didn't want to go toAmerica. In the last year of his life he told his friends that his dream was to leave for the city where he had partly been raised, and teach hockey to the children of Bilbao. So I don't think his Spanishness was nearly as one-note or secondary to his identity as it's often presented.)
These are obviously just the people I talk about most; there are so many other experiences of black and jewish and indigenous and so many other Soviet and post-Soviet people.
All of that is to say that this stuff is complicated and sometimes constructed and I do think it's just as important to acknowledge multiple identities of people in any other place as it is in America. I think because we talk about colonialism in the Americas, there's a tendency to put more weight on multiple identities here (we should put a lot of weight in it! Just not necessarily 'more'!) Different colonial, settler-colonial, and imperial states are different, of course, but they're up to some whack stuff everywhere

Today's Daily Encounter 8th July 2022
An Open Border to Freedom “For he has rescued us from the kingdomof darkness and transferred us into the Kingdom of his dear Son, who purchasedour freedom and forgave our sins."1Janet Daley writes, “During the Second World War,the Jewish philosopher Walter Benjamin fled across Europe from the Nazis. Afterweeks of running and hiding through occupied France, he reached his longed-fordestination of Spain, from which it would have been possible to escape toAmerica.
Bu ton the day that he arrived, the Spanish border, which had been known to be openup to that point, was closed. Benjamin committed suicide in despair. With themost bizarre of paradoxes, the border re-opened the very next day. The closurehad been only a temporary contingency."
Afterstriving, and running, and hiding, Benjamin had lost hope. He had come to aclosed border--there was no way out.2
Perhapsyou are striving, working so hard to do good, in order to be justified beforeGod. But the moment you think you are making progress with your own efforts, you find the “border is closed", and you cannot remove the guilt and the weightof your sin. Or maybe the weight of this world has become too much to bear, andyou feel like you are drowning alone in stress and despair. It may beimpossible to do it on our own, but when we come to Christ, wefind hope, forgiveness of all our sins, and true freedom. The border to HisKingdom is always open, and he is ready to welcome you into his loving arms. Recently I had a friend takehis own life, and while we can never know the exact thoughts that leads someoneto that moment and action, I can’t help but think “If only he would have criedout to God!" “If only he had reached out to someone for help!" I know frompersonal experience that God makes himself known to us when we call on him. In mydarkest hours, in times when I have felt most alone, that is when I felt Godthe closest. I talk to him in the most genuine and transparent way. He knows everyfeeling because I tell him all of it! I encourage you, friend, to bring yourheart to God. He does not condemn us but is compassionate and loves us unconditionally. He cares deeply and wants to give us freedom from whatever it is that we arecarrying.Suggested prayer: Dear God,it is often easy to get consumed by what I am feeling or the weight I amcarrying. Whether it be sin or simply the stress of life, I ask that you giveme the strength to come to you. Your “borders" are never closed, and you arewaiting to give me rest and true freedom. Thank you for never leaving orforsaking me. I love you, Lord. In Jesus’ name, amen.
Colossians 1:13-14 (NLT).

We rarely get a chance to see another country's editorial about the USA Read this excerpt from a Romanian Newspaper. The article was written by Mr. Cornel Nistorescu and published under the title 'C'ntarea Americii, meaning 'Ode ToAmerica ') in the Romanian newspaper Evenimentulzilei 'The Daily Event' or 'News of the Day'. ~An Ode to America ~ Why are Americans so united? They would not resemble one another even if you painted them all one color! They speak all the languages of the world and form an astonishing mixture of civilizations and religious beliefs. On 9/ll, the American tragedy turned three hundred million people into a hand put on the heart. Nobody rushed to accuse the White House, the Army, or the Secret Service that they are only a bunch of losers. Nobody rushed to empty their bank accounts. Nobody rushed out onto the streets nearby to gape about. Instead the Americans volunteered to donate blood and to give a helping hand. After the first moments of panic, they raised their flag over the smoking ruins, putting on T-shirts, caps and ties in the colors of the national flag. They placed flags on buildings and cars as if in every place and on every car a government official or the president was passing. On every occasion, they started singing: 'God Bless America !' I watched the live broadcast and rerun after rerun for hours listening to the story of the guy who went down one hundred floors with a woman in a wheelchair without knowing who she was, or of the Californian hockey player, who gave his life fighting with the terrorists and prevented the plane from hitting a target that could have killed other hundreds or thousands of people. How on earth were they able to respond united as one human being? Imperceptibly, with every word and musical note, the memory of some turned into a modern myth of tragic heroes. And with every phone call, millions and millions of dollars were put into collection aimed at rewarding not a man or a family, but a spirit, which no money can buy. What on earth unites the Americans in such a way? Their land? Their history? Their economic Power? Money? I tried for hours to find an answer, humming songs and murmuring phrases with the risk of sounding commonplace, I thought things over, I reached but only one conclusion... Only freedom can work such miracles. Cornel Nistorescu (This deserves to be passed around the Internet forever.) It took a person on the outside - looking in - to see what we take for granted ! GOD BLESS AMERICA !!!
