Your Soul for Love
Day 8 of kinktober, song is Labour by Paris Paloma. Raphael x Tav.
'I want an equal standing, or nothing. You treat me with respect or I leave, that's how it goes.'
'Such a demanding little mouse,' said Raphael. The softness of his voice belied its danger, but he rubbed his stubbled jaw, thinking. 'Not many would have the guts to make demands of me.'
'I'm not many,' she said with a sardonic smile. 'Isn't that why you like me?'
'Naturally,' he said. 'You have an uncanny knack for getting yourself into trouble.' He watched her across the table, amused. He beckoned with a finger; Doe found herself rising to her feet, but then she paused, raised her chin, sat back down. 'Mouse,' he said. His voice was half paternalistic indulgence, half warning. 'You know I can't give you equal standing. That's not how this works...'
'Why not?'
'If we are equal, there is no bargain.'
'What if you agree because you want me, and not because you want something from me?'
'Presumptive.'
'Only true. I've caught you peeking when you think I'm not paying attention. You think your longing is invisible, because you don't believe you have the capability.'
'Doe-'
'Ah, there it is. My name, to manipulate me into... what?' She narrowed her eyes. 'I don't trust you.'
'Power would drape well across your shoulders.' He stood, stalked the length of the table, lifted her to her feet by the jaw, as though she weighed nothing at all. 'You are a vicious little bargainer and an even sharper vixen. Equals then, so long as you remember how small your body is in my hands.'
'Only if you remember your own stuttering heart, devil.'
'Hmmm.' He pressed a clawed hand to her back, pressed her to his chest. Under her hands, she could feel his heart, strong and steady. She gathered the fabric of his doublet in her fist, felt his heartbeat race. 'Satisfied?'
'No,' she said. 'You narcissist. Make me believe it and I might agree to your terms.'
'You're the one making demands.'
'But you're scheming to make me your warlock. You have been for weeks now. There's no point denying it, I've seen enough pacts to spot the signs. But...' she smirked up at him, towering above her. 'If I sign, I sign for your soul, not mine.'
'What?' He blinked, astonished. 'How-'
'I get your soul. You get mine. That's what love is, Raphael. If you want to show it, you have to know it.'
'Killing for you isn't enough?'
'No.'
'Why?'
'Because you love killing. Love makes you do things you'd rather not, gladly, for the other person.' Her gaze is challenging, unflinching. 'Kneel for me.'
His nostrils flared in fury; he glared at her, the strength of hellsfire in the depths of his yellow eyes. He growled softly, and slowly, miraculously, sank to his knees. 'Brat,' he hissed.
'Good boy.' She reaches out to caress his cheek. 'That wasn't so difficult, was it?' She snaps her fingers, imperious. 'Don't make me drag you through this. You know what to do.'
'You're pushing your luck spectacularly.'
'It's held so far. Now do what I want.'
'If you were anyone else-'
'I'd be dead, I know. But I gave you a command, and I expect you to obey.'
For a few moments, she thought she'd gone too far. The air crackled between them, silence growing heavy. And then her armour was in shreds under his claws, and he pulled her to his mouth by the hips. Fire flooded through her in searing pleasure-pain, and he made a satisfied little hum in response to her cry. For everything the incubus had said, she didn't find herself wanting; there was no clumsiness, in fact he was careful, calculated. Every sweep of his tongue was followed by a pause as he listened to her body, and she grew taut under his attention, tipping over into a wave of pleasure that morphed into the pain of overstimulation; this he understood, pushed her through it, demanding in his own way. She grabbed for his horns, moaning at his answering growl, and rode out the crash of another, and another, and another...
'Having regrets, little mouse?' he asked, grinning wickedly up at her. 'I did promise you'd never dealt with a devil like me before.'
'Fuck,' she sobbed, tightening her grip and grinding against his mouth. 'I- I wasn't expecting-'
'Agree to my terms,' he purred. 'And you will never want again. Your soul for power.'
'Your soul for love,' she countered, gasping. He growled against her skin, bit at her inner thigh to draw blood. 'I'm not- changing my mind.'
He gripped her hips, bruising and furious. 'Your soul for mine. For love. That's what you want, mouse? The love of a monster? Very well. You shall have it.' He rose to his feet, crowded her against the wall. 'You have no idea what you're in for.' He kissed her hard. 'But you will stay. You will stay and be loved, if that is what you insist upon. All the divinity in the realms save you.'
It sounded like a threat, snarled, breathed against her mouth, his kiss searing and angry. All the same, she imagined she held his soul in her hands, twisted as it was; it was hers now. Forever.

Sorry for the cliff hanger again, but part 3 will wrap things up nicely. It will definitely be up by next week since it will be shorter. Enjoy!!!

*Not my gif
Previously in part 1 of a slow burn:
7 weeks later, Somewhere in the East Asian rainforest
Sitting in Newt’s shed in the case, you smiled, rereading the letter Theseus sent you a few days ago.
My dearest y/n,
I miss you more than words can convey. In your absence, I feel how empty my life is without you. I can’t let another day go by without knowing that you’ll spend your life by my side. Assuming you feel as strongly, y/n, I intend to marry you the day you come back to London. I can’t wait anymore. I want you to be my wife. Take this ring so you remember what we’re fighting for. Hope the research is going well. Stay safe. I love you.
Your fiance,
-Theseus
Glancing away from the letter, you smiled at the glittering sapphire ring that sparkled on your finger. It was risky, sure, but Theseus sent the ring with the letter, wanting it on your finger right away. It was perfect and you couldn’t wait to finish up your research with Newt and return to your waiting fiance. Speaking of Newt, he entered the shed, a grave look on his face. “Newt what is it?” you ask immediately, stepping up to him. He looked like a ghost. He gulps and looks up at you, pausing before saying, “It’s Theseus. He’s gone missing.” Blood rushes in your ears and you’re sure you heard him wrong. “What?” you ask, your heart suddenly pumping very loudly. “Theseus is gone,” Newt repeats. The letter in your hand flutters to the ground and your blood curdling scream fills the night air.
To be continued…… right now
You’re falling, falling to the ground. You expect the air to be knocked out of your lungs, but Newt’s arms are there to catch you. He situates himself on the ground and lets you lean against him, sobbing hopelessly onto his shirt. “Shhhh, shhh, it’s going to be alright y/n,” Newt consoles you. You turn around and look at him in disbelief. “How can you say that?” you choke, “You have no possible way of knowing that. He could be dead, Newt, he could be dead.” Newt sucks in a sharp gasp, trying to push your statement to the back of his mind. Suddenly, you jump to your feet, moving frantically. “Newt we have to go. Now,” you urge. Newt hops to stand, rushing after you, calling, “Y/n we still have to finish our research!” You immediately turn around and grab Newt’s hands. Your voice comes out surprisingly level, “Newt. You have to listen to me. Theseus is tough, you and I both know that. But Grindelwald lied at that rally in Paris. He doesn’t care about spilling magical blood. If the head auror is missing I’ll bet you anything he has something to do with it. And he will kill Theseus. We have to find him.” Tears spill from Newt’s bright green eyes as the gravity of the situation falls upon him. “Oh god, you’re right. We’re going now,” he babbles. You follow Newt into the jungle, preparing to depart.
6 days earlier
Theseus Scamander sat in the home of his brother, Newt Scamander, absentmindedly sipping his tea, silently pining for the woman he loves. Fishing into his pocket, he pulls out the jewelry box with his mother’s sapphire ring, the one for his intended. A smile begins to form on his face as he toys with the ring in his hand, picturing the moment he would place it on her small hand. Then, there’s a loud bang from outside the front door and not two seconds later Tina Goldstein comes tumbling through the doorway, hair askew. “Tina what’s the matter?” Theseus stands, walking over to her. Breathing heavily, Tina hisses, “Quickly Theseus. Into the basement.” He has no choice but to follow the younger auror as she yanks on his hand, dragging him behind her. When she reaches the bottom of the stairs, she looks around sadly, a growing fear evident on her face. She lets go of his hand and begins pacing. Theseus had never seen Tina worry, only ever having watched her be courageous and act with instinct. “Tina talk to me!” Theseus shouts, interrupting her pacing. When Tina turns to Theseus, she’s as pale as a ghost. “He’s coming,” her voice is barely audible. “Who Tina? Who is coming?” Theseus urges. Even more color drains from her face as she replies, “Grindelwald. He knows Newt took the blood pact. He wants it back. He’s coming here, now.” Theseus was never a man to give into fear, but he felt it coursing through his veins. A surge of worry for his sweetheart gnawed at his heart. She was with Newt. If Grindelwald was after Newt, that meant that she could be in grave danger. And in a split second, Theseus made the decision to protect her. Racing to Newt’s desk, he fished for some parchment and an envelope. Tina rushed up to his side and breathed, “Theseus what are you doing? We need to get out of here!” Theseus doesn’t move his eyes from the message he scribbles as he replies, “Tina listen to me. You go. I’m staying. If no one is here, then he’ll be able to move on, searching for Newt and possibly discovering him and y/n. You and I both don’t want that to happen. I’ve lost a fiance before and I’m not going to lose another one.” “Fiance…” Tina’s voice trails off, confused. She walks up beside Theseus and reads the letter he’s writing.
Stay safe. I love you.
Your fiance,
-Theseus
“Why aren’t you telling her?” Tina whispers. Theseus’s voice breaks, “I can’t, Tina I can’t. I don’t want her worrying about me. And I don’t want her or Newt coming after me. I’ll be able to sort this out. Been in worse scrapes then this.” Tina audibly gulps, “Theseus, she’d want to know.” Theseus turns to the new auror and sighs, “Tina, I’m asking you, no I’m begging you, please. Don’t say anything. Please just do this one thing for me.” To his complete and utter surprise, Tina nods. Theseus doesn’t give himself a chance to be relieved, instead he hastily reaches into his pocket and encloses the ring within the envelope holding the letter. He seals it quickly. There’s a scuffling upstairs and the sound of an explosion. He was here.
Shoving the envelope into her grasp, Theseus urges, “Tina, take it. Send the letter and get out of here!” Worry fills her features and she wavers, saying, “But Theseus.” The sound of stomping footsteps grow closer to the stairs and Theseus nearly shouts, “Tina go on, get out of here, go!” With a tear in her eye, Tina takes the envelope from his hand and disapparates. Theseus grits his teeth, and races up the stairs, wand raised.
Present day
“Is the new Zouwu ready for travel?” you ask Newt, anxiously shifting from foot to foot. Newt kneels, studying the new addition to his case, deciding on how best to handle the situation. “Newt,” you anxiously call to him again when he doesn’t reply right away. Newt turns around and says worriedly, “She’s a tough girl. Should be alright.” You rest a hand on his shoulder and reassure him, “She’s gonna do great. And she’ll be a great mate for our other Zouwu.” Newt briefly places a hand on top of yours, silently thanking you for your reassurance. His hand pauses when he feels the stone rubbing against his skin. He gasps, “That’s my mother’s ring.” Shrinking back, you mumble, “Yeah. Theseus sent it with the letter. He wants to get married as soon as we get back. Now I’m worried we won’t even get a chance.” Newt huffs, “I’m not letting Theseus lose another fiance. Come on let’s get out of here.” You follow your best friend up the ladder and out of his case. Shutting it, Newt holds the case in one hand and opens his other palm for you to hold. “Newt I,” your voice falters, “I’m scared of what we’ll find.” Newt sighs, “I know exactly what you mean. But I’m even more scared of not finding out anything.” You gulp at his statement, and nod. Satisfied, Newt squeezes your hand and disapparates.
6 days ago, after Tina flees
When Theseus reaches the top of the stairs, he bursts through the door, wand raised aggressively. The scene that he discovers is that of Grindelwald and Vinda Rosier, as well as Abernathy, searching the home for Newt Scamander, inching closer to the stairs. Theseus earned small consolation in the fact that they had not yet discovered his brother’s beloved companion creatures below their feet. “Well well well, if it isn’t Theseus Scamander, the ministry’s golden boy. I’m sure you understand why we’re here,” Grindelwald’s voice is eerily calm, as if he expected the situation to unfold like this. Theseus doesn’t dignify him with a response. Grindelwald grows closer to the eldest brother and says, “Where is your brother Mr. Scamander?” Theseus replies coolly, “How should I know? He went off to find more creatures like he does.” Grindelwald grins, “Oh surely you don’t expect me to believe that do you? I’ll ask you again Mr. Scamander, where is Newt?” Theseus holds his ground, stating, “I don’t have the information you need. I don’t know where he is.” Grindelwald moves within a breath from Theseus and replies, “Well I’m sure the ministry won’t mind then if I hold you for questioning, like they did me in New York.” Theseus lifts his chin, growling, “Do your worst.” A malicious glint flashes in Grindelwald’s eyes as he hisses, “Gladly.” Waving the elder wand, Grindelwald attaches magical binds to Theseus and makes him disappear.
Present day
“How do you know he is missing. Who told you?” you question Newt as you frantically search the house you share for any sign of Theseus. Newt speaks up, “Remember I was getting the Daily Prophet sent to me, forwarded to our location. It was in the newspaper, Theseus hasn’t shown up to work for a week. No one knows where he is. Not even Tina. And Tina’s gone into hiding as well, she’s stopped her letters.” A fresh wave of worry floods your system as you desperately ask, “Where is Tina?” Newt shakes his hand, “I don’t know, but I do know that she’s safe. If I had to make a guess, I’d bet she’s with Jacob. In the new apartment he rented. I’ve contacted the ministry and they’ve said they have communicated with her, but that she’s in hiding.” You nod, and continue to scan the living room. “Are the others okay?” you ask Newt, referring to your creatures in the basement. He replies, “They’re not there. I know Tina and I know she must have taken my other case and moved them to wherever she is, that way she could watch over them.” Despite circumstance you laugh, “Tina really is perfect for you.” The two of you continue searching, but there seems to be nothing to clue you in to Theseus’s disappearance. “Dammit there’s nothing!” you curse, sending a flower vase flying into the wall in your anger. “We’ll find him,” Newt tries to calm you down. Breaking down into angry tears you shout, “You don’t know that! There’s no sign of him anywhere!” Newt doesn’t flinch at your words. Instead he says, “Then we’ll go see Tina and Jacob. See if they know anything.” Suddenly embarrassed by your outburst, you hastily wipe your nose on your sleeve and say, “Okay then let’s go.” Newt nods and takes your hand once again.
6 days ago, after Theseus disappears
Theseus reappears in a dark, dank chamber. He struggles to jump to his feet, but he’s chained against a wall. A voice comes sneering through the darkness, “Must be irritating, not being able to strut around on missions for the ministry.” Theseus jokes sarcastically, “Oh it’s actually quite the pleasant break from work.” Abernathy comes into view. Theseus immediately spits at him, “And at least I’m not a traitor to my country.” This gets under his skin. Abernathy immediately slashes his wand, shouting, “Crucio!” Theseus writhes on the floor in pain, his body twisting at unnatural angles. The pain is never ending, his skin is white hot and feels as if it is melting off of his bones. A voice comes from overhead, Grindelwald’s. It says, “Now Abernathy, we can’t torture all the energy out of him right away. I have some special plans for this particular auror. My own form of justice, we’ll call it.” Abernathy immediately murmurs a thousand apologies to his leader and steps aside to let Grindelwald approach Theseus Scamander. Theseus sits back up as best he can and glares at the man before him. “You are a monster,” Theseus grits through his teeth. Annoyed at this commentary, Grindelwald kicks his boot into Theseus’s nose, effectively breaking it. The blood gushes over Theseus’s soft lips and he spits the blood to the floor. As Grindelwald walks away Theseus smirks, “Still worth it.”
Present day, outside of Jacob’s new London apartment
Throwing away all boundaries, you mutter, “Alohomora,” and burst through Jacob’s door. “Jacob! Tina!” you call out hopefully. “Anyone? Please,” your calls get more desperate. Walking into the living room, you smile at the case on the floor. You knock on it quickly and shout, “Tina come up here!” Newt re-enters the room having found Jacob in the kitchen. Tina climbs out of the case and her gaze only briefly meets your own before she looks past you at Newt. Barreling past, she jumps into Newt’s arms. She sobs, “Newt thank god I thought they had found you I was so worried!” Newt laughs at her unusual affection and holds her up. Ignoring the moment you rush up to her and say, “Tina do you have any idea where Theseus is?” Tina’s gaze falls onto your hand, lingering on the sapphire blue ring on your finger. “So you got the letter,” she murmurs. “Yes but I,” you pause, “Hang on, how did you know about it?” Tina looks away guiltily, avoiding your gaze. “Tina,” your voice comes out as a warning. She admits, “Grindelwald was coming for Newt. To the house. Theseus was worried about him finding the two of you, ambushing you. So he let himself be taken, sending me into hiding moments before. He made me promise to send you that letter and ring. That and he made me promise not to go to you and tell you what happened because I might have been being tracked.” You stand silently, allowing your brain to process these thoughts. Taking the eldest Goldstein sister’s hands you look her in the eyes and plead desperately, “Tina. I need to find him. Please. I can’t lose him. Will you help me?” Tina nods eagerly, “Of course I’ll help you. I’m sorry I didn’t come to you, to both of you, but I really was worried about being tracked.” You continue by asking, “Do you have any leads?” Tina walks into the kitchen where the table is covered in papers, all of her work. “I have some theories. But so far every place I’ve checked is a dead end,” she says. Sighing, you sit down at the table and begin to rifle through her work. Tina’s research was extensive. She had brainstormed dozens of ideas as to where Grindelwald could be hiding out, or keeping Theseus. “Tina have you checked the sewers, where Kama kept you last year?” you asked curiously. She replies, “No of course not. It’s a known location so that’d be pointless for Grindelwald to use it.” Standing, you say, “But maybe that’s exactly why he would use it. Because it wouldn’t be expected.” Tina thinks about it and realizes that you could be right. “We need to go look,” you tell her. She stands, grabbing her coat and preparing to leave alongside you. Newt follows. “Newt you can’t come,” you tell him. He shoots back, “Are you crazy? Of course I’m coming with.” You stare him down and reply, “Newt there’s no time to argue. And the thing is, if you come and Grindelwald or any of his followers are there, you’re screwed. You need to stay here.” Newt turns to Tina, a pleading look on his face. Tina sighs, “She’s right Newt. Besides, I take it you figured out that I brought the creatures here. I’m no magizoologist, I think you should check on them.” That hooks him. “Fine,” Newt groans, walking over to his case. “Be safe,” he calls after the two of you. You and Tina nod, and disapparate.
There was a murmuring and Theseus strained his ears to listen. “We need to move him. There’s a rumour that word got out about his disappearance. No doubt his brother and that illustrator will come looking with that Tina girl.” It was Vinda Rosier who spoke, her thick french accent laced with venom. Abernathy replies, “But isn’t the whole point of this location that it’s been used before? So they wouldn’t bother checking it again?” Rosier hisses, “You idiot! Have you ever met that Tina Goldstein? It gives me no pleasure to say this, but she is something of a genius. She’s bound to figure it out!” Abernathy doesn’t reply. Theseus hastily feels around for anything, any sort of sign he can leave you. Tucking his chin, his bloody lips reached down and he quickly began to bite on the fabric with his teeth, pulling it out of the knot. Ripping it out from under his collar, Theseus spits it out and shoves the tie behind him on the ground as Rosier and Abernathy come into view. “We’re moving. Now,” Vinda growls at him. Abernathy yanks him up by the chains around his wrists harshly. “Nose still broken I see,” Abernathy laughs at Theseus’s face. “Still better looking than you,” Theseus shoots back. This comment causes Abernathy to yank back on his chains, pressing a wand to his throat. “Watch it Scamander,” he says lower than a whisper. Distracted by Theseus’s comment, Vinda groans, “Would you just come on already?” She disapparates, shortly followed by both Theseus and Abernathy. Remaining on the floor after they left, was Theseus’s neck tie.
Present day
“Is this it Tina?” you whisper into the darkness, as you appear below the streets of Paris.”Yes. Lumos,” she mutters, lighting the tip of her wand. You follow suit. The place was abandoned. No one was there. “Do you think they’d take him as far as Paris?” Tina asks you. “They’d do anything to lure Newt closer. So, yes,” you reply. Scanning the empty ground, you feel frustrated as you find nothing. Then Tina’s voice gives you hope. “Y/n over here!” she shouts. Your heart races as you barrel over in her direction. Tina points her wand to the ground, where a silver necktie lies in the dirt. “Is that….” Tina doesn’t finish the question. “Yes, it is,” you reply, frozen in fear by what this means. Stooping down, you pick up Theseus’s necktie fragilely, as if it might fall apart under your touch. Your heart beat violently against your chest, the blood rushing in your ears. “He left it for me,” you say determinedly, coming to a realization of what this means. “Why?” Tina asked, her voice hanging in the air. Your eyes grow wide and you exclaim, “Because he knows his brother! Newt knows how to brew a tracking potion in his sleep! We can track Theseus now!” Holding the tie tightly to your heart, hope blooms in your chest. Tina squeezes your hand and you return to Jacob’s apartment.
When you reappear in the kitchen, your feet automatically carry you to the case, scrambling down the ladder. “Newt! Newt!” you call out anxiously. Your best friend heard the anxiety in your voice, and came running into the shed. “What’s wrong y/n?” he asks. Grinning, you hold the tie up in your hand. “Is that Theseus’s?” Newt asks, holding his breath. “Yes. We can track it now can’t we?” Newt answers your question, “We can certainly try.” Grabbing the tie from your hand, Newt walks to his work station and begins gathering various ingredients to make a tracking potion. Tina soon descends into the case, hovering 3 cups of tea with her wand. “Here you go,” she waves them over to you and Newt. “Thanks Tina,” you smile. Sipping your tea, you absentmindedly tapping your foot impatiently, you waited for the potion to be ready. After five minutes you groan, “Newt? Is it ready?” He replies, “Not yet. Almost.” You huffed at his response and begin pacing the same ten steps in the shed. Various thoughts swirled in your head. Most prominently, you wondered what kind of state you would find Theseus in. This was perhaps the most frightened you had ever felt in your entire life. Because trying to imagine going on in life without Theseus, imagining having to take off your beautiful ring or burying your love in the ground, it made you want to die yourself. Theseus, to you, was life itself. The sun rises and falls with him. Continuing to pace, you struggled to breathe evenly, the thought of Theseus not becoming your husband, not getting to grow old with him, threatened to suffocate you. Another five minutes passed and Newt proclaims that the potion is ready. You see the worry etched in his face, his hand shaking as dumps the potion on the tie. For a minute nothing happened. You felt your heart stop, but then slowly, the tie began to glow.
Present day, Nurmengard Castle
Theseus opened his eyes, but there was only darkness. Straining against his chains, Theseus squints his eyes, trying desperately to see where he is. The past three days were lost from his mind. He had spent them unconcious, succumbing to Grindelwald’s torture. He only hoped that you had found his tie and brought it to Newt. His body was heavy, his limbs had gone limp. The only thing that pushed him forward was you. “Someone’s up,” a voice simpers through the air. Grindelwald flicks his wand, shedding some light onto the room. Adjusting to the brightness, Theseus realizes he’s in a medieval dungeon. Stepping forward, Grindelwald yanks his head up by a thread of curly, auburn locks, forcing Theseus to look him in the eyes. Theseus pushes the pain down, as strands of his hair are ripped out of his scalp. “What a pathetic excuse for an auror,” Grindelwald tsks. He continues, “Now tell me. Why hasn’t your brother found you yet, why hasn’t he come for you?” Theseus groans in annoyance, “I already told you, I have no idea where my brother is or if he even knows that I am missing. No matter how much you torture me, that fact will not change.” Gellert chuckles, “Well that may be true Mr. Scamander, but I think I like my chances.” He finishes the statement with a blast from his wand, and Theseus writhes in pain, smacking his head against the cold stone floor. The amount of times that Grindelwald had tortured the older Scamander began to rack up and Theseus’s mind once again grew fuzzy. But he would not break, he wouldn’t. Reaching deep inside of himself, Theseus held on to whatever strength he had left, letting the cruciatus curse wash over his body. Angered, Grindelwald releases the spell, stepping over to the auror. “You are a strong one,” he grits his teeth, furious that he hadn’t cracked yet. But Theseus felt himself breaking. He was helpless, helpless to the tears that threatened to spill over his eyelids. His blue eyes glossed over with emotion as he fought against the black of unconsciousness that began to overtake him again. Through the fog of his mind, Theseus watches as Gellert Grindelwald steps toward him. And Theseus brought his legs up in fear, trying to defend himself. Grindelwald’s voice drips with sarcasm, “My, my, I’m disappointed Theseus, showing fear. You’re supposed to be the ministry’s fearless golden boy. Pathetic.” His studded boot comes raining down on Theseus’s ribs, cracking them in various locations and the studs puncturing his skin. Theseus groaned, trying desperately to clutch his side, but failing, as his hands were in chains. He fell limp against the wall, his arms hanging above him from the clanking chains of metal. He began suffocating, coughing up blood that dripped onto his loose, dirty button up. Coughing only increasing the pain and Theseus wheezed, struggling for air. Grindelwald laughs, “Appears you’ve punctured a lung. Have fun drowning in your own blood.” The man exits the dungeon, taking the light from his wand with him. In a last ditch attempt, Theseus pulls with all of his might against the chains, screaming, the desperation leaking through in his voice. It was no use. Slumping back against the cool stone, his mouth fills with blood and he gurgles, struggling to spit it out. Nausea poured over him, and he wrenched his head forward, heaving up any of his stomach contents onto the stone beside him. His demeanor broke then. Half sobbing, half choking, Theseus thought about you. And sure, Theseus Scamander was dying, but it was nothing compared to the heartbreak he felt at never getting to see you again. He let you down, and he hated himself for it. Struggling for breath, Theseus prayed. He prayed to the heavens, to anyone that would listen that he would just get to see you once more, if only for a moment. Then his eyelids fluttered shut.
Present day, Newt’s shed
“Can we disapparate?” you breathe the question everyone is thinking. The glow given off by the fabric begins to dim and you panic. “We need to go, now!” you shout. Newt’s green eyes can’t hide his own fear that he feels. You weren’t stupid, if the light went out, that meant Theseus was dead. You and Newt prepare to disapparate and Tina quickly reaches forward, joining your hands with hers. Concentrating on Theseus, you disappear.
Cold passes over you as you reappear on a great stone cliff, wind whipping around the three of you. Confused, you turn around and your eyes travel slowly up to the fortress. “This must be Nurmengard,” you say, a shiver running through you. You still held Newt’s hand, his other one held in Tina’s as well. You looked frantically at the tie in your other hand and watched helplessly as the light emanating from it grew dimmer. Tina voices the problem at hand, “We don’t know the layout of the castle at all.” Newt replies, “It’s a chance we’re going to have to take.” The three of you still linked by hands, stride forward, approaching the building.
The castle was greatly expansive. Your eyes slowly moved upward, studying the stone in close detail. “How do we get in?” you pose the question you were asking yourself aloud. Continuing to look, you spy a window about 100 feet up. It was open. Newt’s eyes followed you. “Y/n that’s not-” Newt’s voice is cut off by the unmistakable popping sound of you apparating up to the open windowsill. “Oh Merlin's beard,” Newt sighs in distress, watching as you reappear on top of the window ledge. “We need to follow her,” Tina says confidently, taking Newt’s hand and following you up to where you reappeared.
You hopped down from the window, entering the fortress. The window was found alongside a long corridor that extended far in each direction. No sooner did you look around than did Newt and Tina appear behind you. Glancing down at the tie in your hand, the light was now barely noticeable. “Newt,” you look at him with wide open eyes, your voice full of emotion. His eyes travel down to the silver fabric, as he desperately willed for it to glow more. But it wouldn’t. Newt gulps, “We need to split up. Get to Theseus. He’s dying.” Tina looks at both you and Newt with the utmost sympathy. Your voice cracks, “Send a patronus if you find anything.” Newt nods. Silently, the three of you separate, preparing for the worst.
Theseus’s eyes flew open and he stared around, sucking in a breath. Slowly raising his hands, he realized he was no longer in chains. He was no longer in pain. He didn’t understand what was happening. Very carefully, he rose to his feet. His blue eyes studied the surroundings very carefully. Everything was bright. Bright white. Fresh powdered snow crunched beneath his feet and he realized he was in the forest behind his childhood home. He raised a hand to cover his eyes as a figure slowly walked towards him from the sunshine. Brilliant h/c hair hung around her, her e/c eyes sparkling in the light shining behind her. A ginormous gown encircled her body, the creamiest white that accentuated how smooth her skin was. With dainty sleeves that hung off of her shoulders, the satin glimmered in front of him.
“Y/n?” Theseus calls out in disbelief. Slowly, you smiled at him. “Hello darling,” your voice came out angel soft. Theseus reaches you, clasping your hands in his own. “I don’t understand what is going on? Why are we here?” Theseus is confused. Taking his hand, you lead him through the snow. “Silly Theseus don’t you remember what today is?” you beam back at him. Theseus responds, “My love, I don’t know what today is.” You laugh lightly, “Today is our wedding day.” Theseus gasps, a pang shooting to his heart. Looking down, he realizes that he is wearing a tuxedo. He anxiously asks, “But what happened at Nurmengard? Did you get to me in time? Before I…. before it was too late?” Ignoring the question, you press a fluttering kiss to the back of his hand. “There’s no need to worry about anything darling. You’re here now,” you console him. You didn’t directly answer Theseus’s question, something which greatly worried him. But if you weren’t answering the question, Theseus didn’t want to know the answer. So he indulges his greatest desire; to see you and be with you. Stopping you, Theseus makes you turn towards him. “Let me look at you,” he breathes. Grinning widely up at him, you bat your eyelids. “You look so beautiful my y/n,” Theseus tears up. Reaching up to adjust his bow tie you reply, “And you look incredibly handsome Thes.” He puffs out his chest at your praise. Theseus carefully brushes a strand of hair away from your face, tucking it gently behind your ear. Suppressing the growing feeling of dread in his chest, Theseus whispers, “You are such a dream. My dream.” His hand lingers on your cheek. Reaching up your own hand, you cover his with it. Theseus gasps at how soft and tiny your hand is. You sigh, “Theseus we can’t be late for our own wedding.” He chuckles, “Of course not my dear. Lead the way.” Taking his hand, you walk with him through the woods, towards his childhood home.
Scouring the castle, you couldn’t find Theseus anywhere. And as the light from his tie only lingered in one tiny spot, you whispered to it, “Please just hold on my love. Please.” Searching quickly, you scanned each room only for moments before moving onto the next one. And as each room came and went, you descended slowly, lower into the castle. Jogging around a corner, you quickly hide yourself at the sound of voices. A thick french accent spoke, “Have you gotten any new information from the prisoner?” A cold, chilling voice replies, “He wouldn’t budge. He’s of no use to use no more. The ministry may come looking for their employee but by then it would be too late. The eldest Scamander will soon be no more.” At this, your heart plummets. Tears sprig from your eyes as you fight back your emotions. Quickly waving your wand, you prepare to send Tina and Newt a patronus message. Your voice breaks, “I overheard a conversation. I think it was Grindelwald speaking. It was about Theseus. He’s dying and they’re keeping him as prisoner. I’m going to try and find where they’re keeping him in the dungeons. Keep looking.” The message was sent. Your fear threatened to paralyze your body, frozen to your spot on the ground. Digging deep into your chest, you pull strength from your love for Theseus. Racing down the nearest staircase, your feet carried you down below the ground, the air growing noticeably colder. “I’m coming Theseus,” your voice hissed into the air. Stumbling to a halt when you reach the end of the staircase, you see two paths. Glancing at the tie, you swallow the vomit that threatens to come up when you can barely see the speck of light. “Please hold on, please. We’re supposed to have more time. We’re supposed to grow old together,” your voice pleads into the musty air as you mentally debate which direction to go in. You couldn’t say why, but for some reason something was pulling you to the right. You indulge the sensation, racing down the passageway.
Theseus comes to a stop in the meadow behind the home him and Newt grew up in. Theseus once again stops you. “My love,” he pulls your hand back, “I need to feel you. To hold you. To know this is real.” Your lips curve into a smile and say, “But I am right here in front of you.” Theseus sighs, “I want to hold you in my arms. Just like the first night we danced together. That was the first time I realized I needed to spend my life with you. That night, was perfect.” Raising your wand you tell him, “Then let’s go back.” Theseus watches in awe as the meadow fades and is replaced with the dancefloor at the minister’s mansion. “What kind of magic is that?” Theseus gasps. You whisper in his ear, “The rarest kind. Love.” Theseus looks down at you, adoration clear on his face. “Dance with me?” you ask sweetly. Theseus silently nods. Taking his hand, you begin to dance a proper waltz. “I can’t wait to be your wife,” you gush. Theseus’s eyes flash with a brief sadness, a strange feeling in his chest. “And I can’t wait to be your husband,” Theseus responds. Noticing the emptiness in his voice you caress his cheek. “Darling, what is bothering you?” you ask gently. Theseus smiles sadly. Deciding to fake it he says, “Nothing could be the matter. I have you. That is all I will ever need.” Goofily grinning, your arms reach up and wrap around Theseus’s neck. He deeply inhales your scent. “I love you Theseus,” you whisper in his ear, your lips lightly brushing his skin. And Theseus chokes back his tears, desperately and tightly gripping your satin clad waist beneath his fingers, grounding himself in the moment that he wishes was real. “I love you too y/n,” Theseus chokes, cherishing you in his arms. Looking up into his starry blue eyes, you gently wipe away his tears with a loving touch. “It’s time to go sweetheart,” you whisper. A glowing light beams at Theseus from across the room. “Go where?” Theseus asks, but he already knows the answer. “Time to come home,” you answer, pressing a kiss to his cheek. Theseus gulps. “After one more dance?” he desperately pleads. You laugh, “How could I say no to you?” Theseus vows to memorize your beautiful smile, committing every detail to his brain. His lips press against your forehead, as he holds you close. Swaying slowly in time with the jazzy piece that plays, Theseus let tears stain his freckled cheeks. Because death he would have to face alone. And he didn’t want to go anywhere that you wouldn’t be beside him.
Your heavy breathes echoed in the cold stone corridor. “Lumos,” you mutter, igniting the tip of your wand with light. Your feet pounded against the floor but you didn’t care if you were heard. Because that one small light, the one from the tracking potion, it was blinking. But then the world came crashing down and you skidded to a halt as the twinkling spot against the silver fabric grew dark. Blood rushing in your ears, you clasped a hand to your chest, struggling not to scream. If you thought you could have ever prepared yourself for this, you were wrong. “This can’t be happening. We’re supposed to get our happy ending. It’s not supposed to happen this way,” you wail in denial. Your body soldered on, you wouldn’t stop until you saw proof. And as you arrived in the dungeons, you blasted each cell door open, searching for a sign. It wasn’t until you got to the last chamber that you got the proof you were looking for. The door swung open and the sight beyond it caused your world to end. Crumpled against the wall, Theseus lay still. “Theseus no!” you cry, crashing to your knees beside his form. You studied his features through your tears, your heart breaking repeatedly. His nose was deformed, clearly broken. His button up was soaked in blood and you gagged at the smell of iron. Hands still chained to the wall, you released them, gently taking his palms in your own. “But I want to marry you. I don’t want to be with anyone else,” you pleaded into the air. Your hands were covered with wet blood as you gingerly lifted him into your lap, looking him over. Raising a shaking hand, you healed his broken nose and the cuts on his face. You were too scared to look under his shirt, where all the blood soaked through the fabric. Your fingers brushed his messy auburn curls from his forehead. Planting a wet kiss to his lips, you cried. Salty tears dropped onto his cheeks and lips, sliding off of your own face. Everything in you begged for Theseus to open his eyes, to see that beautiful blue staring back at you. Desperation in your voice, you croaked, “Theseus please. Please come back to me. I can’t do this without you. I can’t go on without you. Please.”
The dance was over all too quickly and Theseus grew scared as you looked up at him. “I don’t know if I’m ready,” Theseus admitted his fear of death. Smiling up at him, you brushed a curl from his face. “Don’t be scared darling. You are the bravest man I know,” you tell him. He smiles weakly at you. Taking his hand, you lead him in the direction of the unknown. Theseus looks at you beside him and he doesn’t want to let go of your hand. “You’ll stay with me?” he asks, emotion clear in his voice. Squeezing his hand, you reply, “I’ll be by your side. Always.” And as Theseus Scamander gets led into his next journey, something pulls him back. A distant voice carries down to his ears from above. Your voice. But it didn't come from you next to him. “Theseus Please,” it echoed, “Please come back to me. I can’t do this without you. I can’t go on without you. Please.” Theseus stopped in his tracks. “What is it my darling?” you looked up at him. The voice from above in the distance continued to call out to him. Theseus dropped your hand. “It’s not my time yet,” Theseus explains, “I have to go back. This isn’t real. And I won’t leave you alone out there. Because I want to marry you. I need more time with you. Our story isn’t over yet my love. Beaming up at him you say, “Then open your eyes darling. So I can see you’re still alive. So I can see we still have a future.” Theseus nods. Reaching up, you kiss his cheek. Then the image of you walked back into the bright light, fading from view. Before Theseus can even decide what to do, everything went blank. Then his eyes opened.
Crying over Theseus’s chest, you weep for the loss of the life you had imagined. “We were supposed to have more time,” you sobbed. A groan echoed through the air and you feel a brush of movement against your knee. Bringing your eyes up, you see Theseus’s lids open, the deep blue staring back at you. “Theseus?” you cried. Surely you were hallucinating. But then the heavens parted and it really was true. His chest rose and fell gently, quivering with shallow breaths. Your eyes searched everywhere for an explanation, but were drawn back to his big blue ones. His lips parted and he said, “I’m here. We have more time.” “You’re here,” you whispered, a hand brushing his cheek in disbelief. Then the floodgates open. “I thought I lost you,” you sobbed, tears flowing down your cheeks. Theseus moves to sit up and only partially succeeds, resting on his elbows. He reaches a hand up and wipes away your emotion. “I’m here,” he whispers, “I’m here.” clutching his hand to your cheek you sob and sob, overcome with relief for him being alive. His breathing is ragged, each one being drawn in with pain. “We need to get you somewhere safe,” you finally say. Theseus tries to sit up and replies, “No I’m fine. We need to help Newt and Tina. I know you didn’t come alone.” Helping him into a seated position, you gaze into his stare. “Theseus,” you state calmly, “Please don’t make me watch you risk your life again. I can’t do it. I can’t almost lose you again. I just can’t.” Reluctantly, he nods.
Helping him up, you wrapped his arm around your shoulder, supporting his body against your own. “Theseus we have to be careful. I’m not sure you can apparate. I’m worried about your lungs,” you tell him. He coughs, “I’m fine really. There’s no way we’re getting out of here without apparating. Not alive, at least.” He visibly winces, clutching his sides. You tighten your grip around his waist and say, “Well we at least have to find Newt and Tina. I’ll send them a message.” Theseus wheezes, “Tell them to bring my wand. Find my wand. It’s got to be around here somewhere.” Slowly reaching the door you say firmly, “I’m not leaving you. Newt and Tina can look for your wand. You need to be taken care of.” Theseus chuckles airily, “You were always so stubborn.” His comment is immediately followed by a fit of coughs, blood dripping from his lip. “My god Theseus you need a healer!” you hiss, worry coursing through your veins. He gurgles, “My ribs are shattered.” You gasp at his revelation. Shattered ribs meant that Theseus could be drowning in his own blood. Sending a quick message to Newt and Tina, you help Theseus down the long, dark corridor towards the staircase. “Do you have any idea how to get out of here Thes?” you whisper through the dark. He grunts, “No. I was unconscious when they brought me here. I’m sorry.” You reply, “You have no reason to be sorry Theseus. I’m just so happy that you’re alive. I thought….. When I found you I thought you were dead.” Theseus wheezes, “For a minute there I think I was.” You take in a sharp breath, “What do you mean darling?” Theseus suppresses a cough, saying, “Well I blacked out. And then I dreamt of you, you came to me. It was our wedding day and you came to bring me there. And then we got to go back to that night, that night we first danced together. And then you said it was time to come home and I began to go with you. But then I heard your voice, your real voice, above me, calling me back to you. I gotta tell you if that was heaven, it wasn’t all that bad. I got to be with you, I was with you on our wedding day.” At this point, tears stream down your face but you make no move to wipe them away, still supporting Theseus against you. “We’re gonna get that day for real Thes. I promise,” you sniffle. Reaching the stairs, you pull Theseus into your side and help him slowly up each step. His breathing becomes more ragged and he coughs, spitting up some more blood. Watching him struggle in pain was torture. “Come on, let’s take a break,” you say sweetly, helping him to sit down on the stone steps.
Theseus rests his head against your shoulder, breathing heavily. “How are we ever going to get out of here?” he sighs, the breathes shaking in his chest. Wrapping an arm around him, you plant a kiss on his head, saying, “We’ve made it this far. We can do it.” Theseus whispers into your neck, “I didn’t want you to come for me. I wanted to keep you safe. I can’t have anything happen to you.” Turning inches from his face you respond, “Theseus, I couldn’t let anything happen to you. I love you. You’re my entire world darling. I couldn’t let you go. I would never be able to move on from you.” Theseus huffs, “I love you too y/n. Thank god you’re so stubborn, I’m not sure what I would do without you. You laugh and pull him to his feet saying, “Come on darling. We’ve got to get you out of here.” He nods, letting you support him the rest of the way.
Across the castle Newt and Tina search every room for Theseus. Then, your patronus form flies into the room where Newt and Tina stand, reciting your message, telling them to look for Theseus’s wand and that he was alive. “Oh my god he’s alive,” Newt breathes a sigh of relief. “He’s alive, my brother’s alive,” Newt repeats, his eyes welling up. “He’s alive, now let’s go find his wand,” Tina urges him. Pulling him down the hallway, they enter the next room, searching for Theseus’s wand. “Tina. The only thing that makes sense is for Gellert or someone else to be holding onto his wand,” Newt states nervously. “I think you’re right Newt,” she agrees. “But that means there might be a conflict that arises. We need to be prepared,” he says decisively. Tina squeezes his hand reassuringly and they run off, looking for Grindelwald.
You now traveled up three flights of stairs, and Theseus was growing very tired. “We need to find a bedroom for you to rest in Thes. Until Tina and Newt find your wand. You’re hurting bad and I need to check on you. To set your ribs,” you tell him. “How will Newt and Tina find us?” Theseus coughs. “I told them to meet us back by the open window we climbed through,” you reply. Reaching said corridor, you ease Theseus into the doorway of an empty bedroom. Propping up the pillows, you gently tell Theseus, “Sit here darling. Let me look at you.” Theseus eases himself up on the bed, wincing in pain as he leans back onto the pillows. Sitting gently next to him, you carefully unbutton his shirt, pulling it off of his large shoulders. Theseus’s bare freckled chest is revealed and you gasp at the gash marks where Grindelwald’s boots pierced his skin. You bite the inside of your cheek, suppressing your emotions. The cuts run deep, fresh blood oozing from them. “Tergeo,” you mumble, waving your wand over the open wounds. Slowly, they close. Gently pressing on his stomach, you feel the places where his ribs are broken. “Theseus my god you could’ve drowned in your own blood!” you gasp, unintentionally scolding him. Placing your wand against the broken spots you proclaim, “Brachium Immendo!” There’s a crackling sound as his ribs are back in place. Feeling his chest yet again you say, “You’re still going to feel some pain, but your ribs won’t puncture your lungs anymore. Theseus finally lets himself breathe a sigh of relief. Brushing away his red curls, you kiss his forehead lightly. “Try taking a few deep breaths,” you say. Theseus breathes in and midway through it, his throat starts gurgling, blood coming up. “Darling we’ve got to get all this blood out of your lungs. This is going to be uncomfortable,” you say gently. Theseus sits up more and lets you proceed. “Anapneo,” you mutter, aiming your wand at Theseus’s throat. Almost immediately Theseus begins coughing up buckets of blood, clearing it out of his lungs. Wordlessly you support his back, rubbing light circles across his skin as he heaves up the rest of the blood. He wipes his lips, breathing heavily and recovering. “There. All better,” you whisper. “Tergeo,” you say again as an afterthought, closing the wounds in his lungs. Theseus takes his first deep breath and doesn’t cough.
Turning around to face you, Theseus kisses you deeply for the first time since you found him. His hands find their way into your hair, and he pulls you into his lap. You rest your hands helplessly against his bare chest, melting into his touch. Pulling away breathlessly, Theseus smiles at you, the twinkle returning to his bright blue gaze. He brings your hands up into his own and runs a finger across your engagement ring. “I don’t think I’ll ever get used to seeing my mother’s ring on your finger. It makes me so happy,” Theseus gushes. Blush comes to your cheeks and you say, “Theseus I can’t wait to spend my life with you.” He presses kisses to your cheeks and pulls you close, wrapping his arms around you. “I’m never letting you out of my sight again,” he whispers, squeezing you. You giggle, “Deal.”
Tina and Newt happened upon Grindelwald’s follower; Abernathy. “I can see Theseus’s wand. It’s in his back pocket,” Tina whispers to Newt. Newt leans forward against Tina, peeking around the corner. “Confundus,” Newt mutters, casting the spell at Abernathy. He falls over, and Tina casts a nonverbal spell, summoning Theseus’s wand into her grip. Suddenly, an ear splitting scream can be heard throughout the castle. The cry was angry, full of rage. Tina looks to Newt, eyes wide with wonder. “We need to get to Theseus and y/n. Now,” Newt says urgently. Grabbing Tina’s hand, they fly down the hallway, racing towards you and Theseus. About to round the corner, Newt throws a hand out, holding Tina back. A voice echoes down the hallway, “Scamander is gone! This means that his awful younger brother and that illustrator are here. Find them, find them!” Grindelwald’s voice shakes with anger. He marches off down the corridor himself. “This isn’t good,” Tina breathes, looking at Newt scared. “Come on,” Newt grabs her hand, dragging her down the hallway as fast as his feet can carry him.
Upstairs you heard the scream too. Jumping up from your spot in Theseus’s arms you shout, “We’ve gotta get out of here. Now!” Theseus follows your lead, hastily buttoning up his bloody shirt. “But what about Newt and Tina?” Theseus asks. “Newt and Tina can take care of themselves. I won’t put you back in jeopardy again Thes. I just got you back.” “But my wand,” Theseus argues. Moving out the door, you called behind you, “Theseus it’s not worth your life. Please just listen to me.” He follows you into the corridor. Rounding the corner, Newt and Tina come sprinting behind you. “Newt! Wand!” Theseus calls to his brother. Newt huffs his cinnamon curls out of his face and tosses Theseus his wand from down the hall. Theseus closes his fingers around the wood, his feet racing towards your own as you all travel to the end of the corridor. “What are we running from?” you call out your question. Tina shouts back, “Grindelwald knows Theseus is gone!” Newt adds, “You can’t apparate inside the building, he’s put up a protection charm. Go, out the window!” Theseus stops at the end of the hall, swinging the window open. Instinctively, he waits for Newt and Tina to go first. “We’re right behind you,” Theseus declares, helping Tina up onto the sill. Newt looks to you, his best friend. “Don’t linger,” he says, desperation clear in his voice. You reply, “We won’t. Now go!” Newt takes Tina’s hand and the two of them step off of the sill, falling briefly through the air before disapparating. Scrambling up onto the stone, Theseus hurries to pull you up ide him. The pounding of footsteps brings your attention back down the hall. You feel your heart drop as you see Abernathy racing towards you, followed by Gellert Grindelwald. His cold gaze lingers upon the two of you, briefly studying your hands that are entwined. “Avada Kedavra!” he yells, the green beam from the spell shooting towards you. In a split second you push Theseus from the windowsill, preparing to jump off behind him. With a wave of your wand you close the window in front of you, the spell hitting the glass instead of yourself. As the window panes shatter you catch a glimpse of a seething Grindelwald. “I shall ruin you if it is the last thing I do,” is the last thing you hear, as you step backwards off of the stone.
Falling through the air, you instinctively think of Newt’s and apparate there, hoping that Theseus did the same. Your feet hit the carpet of Newt’s living room and you fall hard to your knees from the impact. Nevertheless you immediately shoot up, calling out, “Theseus! Theseus! Where are you?” Your voice is met with the sound of feet racing towards you. Theseus picks you up in his arms, enveloping you in his protective grasp. You bury your face in the crook of his neck, deeply inhaling his familiar scent as you wrap your legs around Theseus’s waist. Your shoulder becomes wet and you realize Theseus is sobbing. “I thought you were dead. I couldn’t believe you pushed me aside I thought you were going to sacrifice yourself for me. I was so scared. I thought I was going to lose you, just like Leta,” Theseus cries. Brushing your fingers through his curls, you whisper reassurances in his ear. “I’m here. I’m not going anywhere,” your lips brush against his earlobe. Theseus’s arms tighten around you as if he needs to make sure that you’re really there. His lips move to your throat and leave fire in their wake. “Y/n I….” Theseus’s voice falters. There’s heat sparking between your body pressed against his. His heavy breaths wash over your face as he stares intently into your own e/c eyes. “I need you,” he whispers, sending a chill down your spine. “I’m yours darling,” you reply softly. That’s all Theseus needs to hear. His feet carry him towards your bedroom. Clinging desperately to him, you let him carry you into your bedroom. Theseus lays you gently on the bed, pressing kisses to your neck. His hands roam beneath your shirt, his nails leaving trails across your bare skin. “Thes,” you gasp as he continues to push up your shirt. He leaves love bites across your entire chest, marking you as his own. Everything becomes a haze as you struggle to get Theseus out of his clothes. Your body sticks against Theseus as your bodies move into each other, finding their own rhythm. “I love you,” Theseus says breathlessly as his body collapses on top of your own. “I love you too,” you gasp into his chest. Wrapping the two of you in a sheet, you rest against Theseus, sighing in contentment.
As head auror of the British Ministry, everyone wanted to be apart of your and Theseus’s wedding. The next day you sat across from Newt at your workstation while Tina and Theseus were at work. “Ughhh all this planning is so stressful I wish we could just elope,” you groan. Newt laughs, “Given Theseus’s position, there’s no way you could get away with that.” “I know,” you complain. Theseus and Tina arrive home from work and you and Newt go up to greet them. “Hello darling,” you kiss Theseus’s cheek. “Hello beautiful,” he replies. Hanging his coat, you ask him, “Did you send out the invitations today?” He answers, “Yes, on my way to work.” “Thank you, you’re the best,” you tell him. “Sit down and I’ll get you some dinner,” you add. Summoning the pot roast you made earlier, you place a heaping portion in front of your fiance. Newt and Tina soon join you. “Do you really think two months are enough time to plan?” Tina asks you. You admit, “I’m not sure Teenie. But let’s sure hope so.” Tina laughs.
That night you go to sleep by Theseus’s side, returning to his apartment with him. Around 2 am, you wake with a start. Beside you Theseus thrashes in his sleep, tossing and turning in distress. A hand covers his ribs as he shouts out, “I don’t know where he is, I swear! Kill me, just kill me already!” Shooting up to a sitting position, you shake him by his shoulders. “Theseus wake up! My darling wake up! It’s only a nightmare, you’re here, you’re safe!” Theseus’s eyes open and he stops screaming. Tears stain his cheeks and he looks around in confusion. “Darling look at me. You’re okay. We’re home. No one can hurt you here,” you wipe his tears away. “I thought I was back there for a second. Being tortured. It felt so real,” Theseus wheezes, his breaths slowing down. Rubbing comforting circles on his biceps, you shush him, whispering comforting thoughts. Wrapping your body around the back of Theseus, you protectively press yourself against him. Theseus rests his hand on top of yours. “Thank you,” he whispers. “My darling I will always be there to protect you from your demons,” you answer. Theseus leans into your touch, reveling in how comforting it is. Eventually you ask, “How long has this been going on?” Silence passes between the two of you. Finally he says, “Ever since I fought in the war.” You cautiously continue, “What happened?” Theseus sighs, his voice trembling, “I went against orders. Wizards weren’t supposed to get involved. But I used magic to stop bombings, to save thousands of lives. Eventually when the Minister found out he forbade me from doing it again. So I enlisted alongside other muggle soldiers. I had to watch men I knew die, and I wasn’t allowed to save them. And when I stepped in front of someone in my troop, to save them, I was shot in the chest. I should have died. I was left in the trench for hours before one of the red cross nurses found me. It’s a miracle I survived. I remember that pain. And I could have easily stopped it, but it would have violated the statute of secrecy. Feeling that helpless, it was torture.” Nothing could have prepared you for that story. You knew Theseus fought in the war, but you didn’t know the extent of it until now. “I’m so,” your voice cracks, “I’m so sorry Theseus.” He answers you with a kiss. Gently laying back down, you hum softly into his chest until he is able to once again fall asleep.
The next morning the Daily Prophet is delivered to Theseus’s door and you frown at the cover. It read, “Newt Scamander’s Assistant Magizoologist to Marry Theseus Scamander.”Below the title was a picture of you and Theseus at the Minister’s Christmas Eve Ball dancing, gazing into each other’s eyes like love sick teenagers. Sighing, you carry the paper into the kitchen. “Funny how they never refer to me by name. Somehow I must be less important,” your voice drips with sarcasm. Theseus laughs, “Darling you know how the Prophet is, they’re extremely sexist. Everyone knows how talented you are y/n. You practically ooze intelligence my love.” You blush at his compliments. He kisses your forehead and says, “Now I must go to work darling. Mother wants you to pop over so she can work on your dress fitting. I’ll see you tonight.” “Theseus I’ve never met your mother,” you hiss with worry. He chuckles, “Relax darling I know she’s going to love you. Today is the perfect day for you to meet. She’s expecting you at 10. I look forward to hearing how it goes. I love you.” He kisses you swiftly and is out the door as you mumble, “I love you too.”
As soon as Theseus leaves, you put on a pair of black trousers and a white blouse. Brushing your hair, you look nervously at your reflection, wondering desperately what Newt and Theseus’s mother will think of you. “Here we go,” you mutter to yourself, working up the courage to leave. The two of you had decided to get married in the meadow behind his home, just like he had dreamt when he was unconscious. Disapparating to the large home, you knock on the door. “Mrs. Scamander?” you call out hesitantly. You hear footsteps and they’re shortly followed by the door swinging open, a wide smile and beaming hazel eyes meeting your gaze. You stood nervously in front of her, fidgeting with your engagement ring. “Hello Mrs. Scamander I’m y/n-” your interruption is cut off by her roping you into her soft embrace, squeezing you with affection. “Y/n! I’m so happy to be finally meeting you! You’re so much more beautiful than Theseus described!” You blush at her comment. Taking your hand, she leads you into the home.
“Would you like a cup of tea dear?” she asks, walking into the kitchen. “That would be lovely, thank you,” you reply graciously. As she makes a cup of tea, she says, “You can sit at the table dear, don’t be shy.” “Thank you,” you reply gratefully, taking a seat near her. She brings the tea over, placing a mug in front of herself as well. “I’m sorry we haven’t met sooner,” you admit. She waves off your apology, “Not to worry dear, not to worry! We’ll have years to get to know each other. I feel so lucky that both of my boys know you.” You blush, “Thank you. You’re really too kind.” She shrugs, “Newt and Theseus always write home each week. Newt mentioned you immediately, raving about how he’d finally found an assistant with equal talent to his own. He was even more thrilled when you agreed to illustrate for his book.” You respond, “Newt’s a great friend. I’m really glad I get to work with him.” She nods knowingly and continues, “It’s very much like my youngest son to compliment others and confide in me. It’s when Theseus began to talk about you in his letters that I knew there was something different about you. Theseus is very much a private man. But in one of his letters he began to speak of you. And his admiration of you only grew with each letter.” Curiosity eats away at you. Before you realize what you’re doing you blurt out, “Do you have the letters?” She beams brightly, “Oh yes I keep all the boys letters! Let me find it!” She immediately stands and begins to rummage through various drawers in the kitchen. You hear a small, “Aha!” and she soon returns, letters in hand. She hands them to you, saying, “Here you go dear. I almost forgot I have to go feed the Hippogriffs, there’s a new litter of babies you see. I’ll be back in a few minutes.”
Turning your attention to the parchment in your hand, you read the date of the first envelope and think back. It was the day after you first met Theseus. Holding your breath, you opened the letter. It read:
Dearest Mother,
I’m glad to hear that you are doing well. I’ve been meaning to come by more, but you know how the winter season gets, so many ministry events. Newt was actually at Travers’s banquet last night. He was with Tina, they seem very happy together and she seems to care a great deal for him. Newt actually brought along his new assistant, he had to let Bunty go. Her name is y/n l/n. She’s…. Different. It turns out she illustrated the anniversary edition of The Tales of Beedle the Bard. She’s extremely talented and so young to have done so much already. It’s very inspiring. The rest of the night went as well as any other, though it was quite boring. Y/n made it interesting, though. She had no idea how to use a salad fork or any of the fancy place settings. I had to help her, it was quite comical actually. I haven’t laughed like that in a long while. I must go now but I will be home for Sunday dinner. All my love,
-Theseus
The way he talked about you made you smile endlessly. Turning to the next letter, you eagerly open it and scan the words quickly.
Dear Mother,
Thank you for dinner the other day. Newt and Y/n’s new edition of the book made the paper. Everyone is quite excited about it. I’m sure you saw it in the Prophet. Newt has been coming to more and more of the Minister’s dinner, along with y/n. For the first time since Leta, I let myself dance. I danced with y/n last night and I think I started to feel things, things I haven’t felt since Leta died. It angers me how all of the men in the department talk about her like she’s some piece of meat, or just something to look at. See she has the most intelligent mind Mother, she makes the most thoughtful comments. I don’t think I’ve ever met someone so well spoken. I’m afraid I’ve ruined what might have been though. I made a comment about her age, about how she is probably too young for me, and she didn’t take it lightly. Why must I always sabotage my own happiness? Or maybe it is for the best. I feel guilty, it’s only been a year since Leta’s passing and I’m already beginning to feel for another. But it’s not like I planned this. I didn’t plan on falling for Newt’s assistant, it just happened. I must go to the Ministry now, can’t be late. Will write more later. All my love,
-Theseus
You could feel Theseus’s emotion in that letter. It seemed his mother was his confidant for some time while he harbored silent feelings for you. You turned to the next letter.
Dearest mother,
I’m sorry it’s taken me longer than usual to write. I ran into y/n at the ministry the day after I wrote you my last letter. I told her I was sorry for my comments about her age. I ended up going over to Newt’s and confessing that I had feelings for her. She’s amazing, she could have anyone but she agreed to see where things go. But the truth is I’m scared Mother. Because I don’t want to lose someone else again. I may have told y/n that I have feelings for her, but the truth I left out. The truth is I am in love with her. Easily and undeniably in love with her. I can see a future again Mother. My biggest regret is not asking her to be my girlfriend. I’ll be putting a change to that as soon as I see her next at the Minister’s dinner. Things at the Ministry are tense, the search for Grindelwald continues. We hit dead end after dead end and it’s putting everyone on edge. I can’t say much more than that. Stay safe,
-Theseus
Reading Theseus’s thoughts, knowing that back even then he was already in love with you, it made your heart soar. You made a mental note to show Theseus even more love when you get home. You turn eagerly to the last letter.
Dear Mother,
How are you? I apologize that neither Newt nor I have been for dinner in weeks. There’s been rumors that Grindelwald is having his followers track some aurors and I’m afraid it’s too risky to stop by for the time being. I have to keep you safe, we’ve already lost dad and I need your guidance now more than ever. I hope you can understand. I’ve asked y/n to be my girlfriend but I have much bigger plans than that. The Christmas ball is in a week and we plan on attending as a couple. She thinks I don’t know, but her and Newt have been asked to depart when the New Year starts, for some new research in Eastern Asia. I want to marry her when she comes back. So I’d like to ask if I could propose with your ring. It would mean the world to me. And I cannot wait for you to meet her. Talk soon,
-Theseus
You hastily wipe your eyes on your sleeves, overcome with emotion for the man who loved you so much. Draining the tea from your mug, Mrs. Scamander returns to the kitchen. “Thank you for sharing these with me. It means the world,” you tell her softly. She grins, “Of course my dear. Theseus is not the most expressive of men when it comes to his emotions and I thought you should see how much he felt for you.” “Yes I see that now,” you whisper. She asks, “How is my Theseus? When he stopped writing, I knew something was wrong. But by the time I found out he was missing he was found merely days later. I owe you a great deal, you saved my oldest son.” You clear your throat, “Theseus is good now. When I found him, he was…… he was basically dead. I can’t tell you what brought him back because I really don’t know. But it was something I won’t soon forget.” She gulps, “Oh my word.” “Not everyday is a guarantee, not these days. That’s why we’re getting married so soon. I want to be able to call him my husband before Grindelwald comes back after us again,” you confess. She responds, “That’s very wise. Not everyday is a guarantee. I lost my dear husband after the first war very unexpectedly.” You tentatively place a hand over hers on the table and say, “I’m so sorry about that. Theseus told me what a great man he was.” She hastily wipes away a tear and replies, “Well no matter now. Let’s get you fitted in that dress. Come with me dear.” You follow her into the living room.
With a wave of her wand, she summons the gown from the chest it is kept in. Now clothed only in your slip, you raise your arms and the dress settles around your figure. The sleeves hung off of your shoulders, a tulle material. The rest of the dress was a rich, white, satin with a lace overlay. “Mrs. Scamander, I can’t thank you enough for helping me with the dress. I feel honored to be able to wear your’s,” you gush. “I’m so happy to have you wear it sweetheart. After Leta died I didn’t think I’d ever see my older son smile again. But with you, I’ve never seen him smile bigger,” she replies. Finishing the alterations, she waves her wand, adjusting the dress. She moves in front of you, clasping your hands. Her eyes go to the ring on your finger. “I’m so happy for you. I’ve never had a daughter before and I’m so happy to be able to get to call you mine,” she tears up. Emotion pricks at your own eyes, threatening to spill over onto your cheeks. Mrs. Scamander spent more of her days alone lately, and you were happy to make her family bigger. Her eyes light up as she exclaims, “I almost forgot my veil!” Summoning it from a chest, you study the lace that matches the top layer of your dress. “It’s beautiful,” you smile. She places it on your head and lets you look at yourself in the mirror. Overcome with emotion, you twiddle the ring on your finger. Looking in the mirror, you could see your future ahead of you. A turmoil of feelings swirl in your stomach and you swallow your bile. You imagined raising a family with Theseus, having a little boy just like him. Mrs. Scamander interrupts your thoughts, “You’re all set my dear. You can leave the dress here and I will take care of it. I’ll see you in three weeks for the big day!” Changing out of the dress, you thank your future mother in-law and leave the Scamander household, returning to Newt’s.
Theseus stops by Newt’s for dinner. Scurrying around the kitchen, he asks you, “How was meeting my mother?” Placing the meal on the table you answer, “Theseus she’s amazing I adore her! She also showed me the letters you wrote her.” He immediately goes red in the face and rubs his neck. “She did, did she?” he mumbles. You giggle, “Yes she did. And if it’s even possible I love you even more.” you stride over to him planting a firm kiss on his lips. Theseus gushes, “I’m so ready to marry you.” “Me too,” you grin. Newt and Tina join you for dinner and Newt says, “Y/n I’ve spoken with Mr. Virgil and he says that what research we’ve collected before we went in search of Theseus is good enough for now. He’ll have more trips lined up in the future but they’ve been put on hiatus while the search for Grindelwald continues. The ministry needs people who have experience with him, and that means me and you. But he wants you to continue with your illustrations.” You respond to Newt, “And how is our new Zouwu mating project going?” Newt beams proudly, “Fantastic. They get along very well together and with summer coming I’m sure she’ll be impregnated soon.” Tina chimes in, “Theseus and I, now that we know where his headquarters are, have been tasked with running the search. Right now it’s all about a waiting game. But we’re going to enlist your help when the time comes.” You nod. Newt asks, “And how is my mother?” You respond, “She’s doing great Newt, I absolutely adore her. But I admit I do feel a bit bad, she seems so lonely in that big house all by herself.” “We have to protect her first,” Theseus interjects. “I know,” you sigh in frustration.
After dinner, you kiss Theseus goodbye, telling him you’ll be home after you do your nightly rounds of the creatures. Newt walks alongside you and chuckles, “I never thought when I hired you as my assistant that I’d end up with you as my sister in-law. It’s the best thing I could have hoped for.” Instinctively, you hug him. “I’m so glad you’re gonna be my brother,” you tell him. Newt returns your hug. Checking on each habitat, the creatures begin to behave unusually around you, swarming in a circle. “What’s going on guys?” you giggle as the mooncalves swarm you. They nip at your belly and you feed them a little extra food. When you move to the demiguise, Dougal also clings to you. The clock chimes and you realize how late it is. Dougal reluctantly lets you remove him as you make your way back towards the stairs. “I’m headed out Newt! I’ll see you tomorrow!” you call as you head up the steps. “Bye y/n!” Newt shouts after you. You bid Tina goodnight and head back to Theseus’s apartment, already forgetting about how strange the animals acted around you.
The next three weeks you spent your days at Newt’s, working on new illustrations and monitoring the new Zouwu. Each night you had dinner with Theseus, Newt, and Tina, and would then go home with Theseus. One night a few days before the wedding, you walked around Newt’s basement. Dougal trails behind you. “Dougal go back to your nest,” you whine at him. The demiguise ignores you and continues to follow you. Stopping near the new female Zouwu, you stroke her fur gently. “Hello beautiful,” you murmur to her. She purrs and rubs her head against your body. Nestling her head against your abdomen, she kisses it gently. “So silly,” you laugh. Unbeknownst to you, a certain cinnamon haired magizoologist watches you from afar, processing his thoughts. Newt watches as Dougal keeps a protective stance near you and as the mating Zouwu bonds to you. Having examined the new Zouwu earlier, Newt knew that the creature was indeed pregnant. He shakes his head, muttering, “It’s just a coincidence,” and continues with his work. Not soon after this do you manage to part from the creatures and leave, departing for the home that you share with your fiance.
Walking into the apartment you share with Theseus, your stomach rumbles loudly. Theseus hears this and laughs, “Someone’s hungry aren’t we?” He plants a kiss to your forehead. Smiling sheepishly, you respond, “I’ve been a lot more hungry lately these days. Not sure why.” Theseus chuckles, “Not to worry darling, let me fix you your favorite, a grilled cheese.” Kicking off your shoes, you sigh heavily as you sit down at the kitchen table. “That would be great thank you darling,” you reply. Raising your legs, you rest your feet on another chair. Gazing down at your feet, you’re thoroughly surprised to see your ankles noticeably swollen. Rubbing them tenderly you groan, “What is going on with me?” Theseus busies himself with making your food and places it in front of you. “Thank you,” you tell him as you nearly inhale the sandwich. Theseus says softly, “Are you ready for bed?” You nod wordlessly. He takes your hand and leads you to your bedroom. Sitting on the edge of the mattress, you glance at your reflection in the mirror. “I’m gaining weight,” you hiss to yourself in disappointment. Running a hand over your belly, you wonder where your new appetite comes from. Theseus returns from the bathroom and lays down, pulling you into him. “Only a few more days before you’re my wife,” he whispers in your ear. “Thank god,” you reply earnestly. Theseus kisses you sweetly and the two of you fall asleep.
The next day, two days before the wedding, you descend into Newt’s basement. Walking up to your soon to be brother in-law you tell him, “I’m gonna go check on the Zouwu. Have they mated yet?” Newt responds, “Yes. I checked yesterday and she’s carrying, they mated successfully.” You grin, “Oh goody! That is so exciting!” “Yes, very exciting,” Newt says, somewhat subdued. You decide not to comment on this, and make your way towards the Zouwu. She greets you eagerly, with immediate affection. “I’m happy to see you too,” you chuckle, letting her nestle into your abdomen. She plants a kiss there like last time. Dougal arrives not much later, keeping himself no more than ten feet from you, watching you closely. An uneasy feeling settles in your stomach at the sight of Dougal watching you, but you suppress the feeling, concentrating on the Zouwu. Running a hand over her belly, you feel for the embryo. Using your wand, you perform an ultrasound and conclude that she is about 5 weeks along. “You’ll be a great mommy,” you murmur, planting a kiss on her mane. She purrs affectionately. You sit with her for a while, but when you finally do remove yourself, you see Newt staring intently at you. His green eyes are wide open, a flurry of emotions running across his face, one that you could detect, was the worry settled in his features.
You approach him slowly. “Newt. What’s going on?” you ask gently. A sadness briefly flashes in his eyes and he sits down at his workstation. “I’m not sure how I didn’t see it before,” he mumbles to himself. Sitting across from him you ask, “See what Newt?” “It was so obvious, all this time, right there in front of me,” he continues talking to himself. You clutch his hand and say, “Newt. You’re scaring me. Please tell me what’s going on.” Finally, Newt brings his eyes up to your own. He looks at you, gaze full of concern. “Y/n, I know,” he sighs. You frown in confusion. “Know what?” you ask. Newt’s eyes widen even more. “You mean you don’t know?” he asks incredulously. “Know what?” you ask again, frustrated that he wouldn’t tell you. Newt sighs, composing himself. He tells you, “Y/n I can tell. I thought it might have been just a fluke, but it’s not. I watched you with Dougal and the Zouwu. The creatures, they can tell too. That’s why Dougal’s been so protective.” “Why?” your voice comes out as a tiny squeak. “Y/n you’re pregnant,” Newt squeezes your hands. Blood rushes to your ears and you feel the world pressing down on you. “What?” your voice comes out barely a whisper. You needed him to repeat it, but yet you knew it was true. It was the reason why you have gained weight, the reason why you were hungry more often, and the reason why you were even more emotional. Newt’s voice breaks through to your ears. “You’re pregnant,” he repeats. You’re on your feet, pacing relentlessly as you mutter, “Oh god. Oh no, oh no, oh no, oh no, no, no, no.” Newt watches you intently. “I’m supposed to be getting married the day after tomorrow!” you yell helplessly. Tears begin to stream down your face and you break. Newt rushes to your side and hugs you tightly. “Shhh. It’s gonna be okay. I promise,” Newt whispers.
You let Newt hold you for awhile, as you are overcome with emotion. Finally, you stand, removing yourself from your basically brother in-law’s grasp. “Newt?” you let his voice hang in the air. “Hmm?” he turns back to face you. “Don’t tell Theseus. Just, not yet, please. I need to get through our wedding day first,” you say desperately. He clearly doesn’t like the idea of keeping this from his brother, but he nevertheless agrees to your terms. “Thank you Newt, really. Thanks,” you say sincerely. “Stay safe,” Newt replies. You nod and depart.
“Hello darling,” Theseus greets you with open arms when you arrive home. You gulp, swallowing your emotion. “Hello handsome,” you walk into his arms and let him hold you close. As much as you pushed it down, your tears soon wet your fiance’s shirt. Theseus raises your chin to look at him and he asks urgently, “My darling what’s wrong?” Wiping away your tears, you reply, “Nothing Thes. I’m just emotional, I can’t believe I get to marry you.” Theseus smiles, “Believe it babe. Two days and you’ll be my wife.” You smile and let him kiss you. He hugs you tightly and you’re overcome with guilt at lying to your soon to be husband. That night Theseus sleeps soundly beside you, but you toss and turn, desperately wondering how on earth you would tell Theseus. Theseus, the love of your life, the man who carried the weight of the world, and the ministry, on his shoulders heavily. You didn’t want to add to his stress, it wasn’t fair to him. He was expected to lead the aurors in their pursuit of Grindelwald, but you knew he couldn’t do it if he felt like he had another innocent life to protect.
The next day is full of preparations for tomorrow’s wedding. Mrs. Scamander greets her eldest son eagerly, nearly sobbing at the sight of him intact. “Theseus Scamander never scare me like that again!” she scolds him. He laughs, “I’ll try not to Mother.” She hugs her son and studies you as you stand there, a mess of emotion. “Theseus darling why don’t you go steam your suit,” she tells her son. Theseus smiles and immediately obeys, jogging upstairs. She turns to you and narrows her eyes, studying you closely. “Y/n dear, would you come sit with me for a moment,” she asks sweetly. “Of course,” you reply, following her to the kitchen table. She sits down and places her hand on top of her own. You avoid her intense stare, looking down at the wooden surface. “You’re pregnant,” she states it as if it’s the most obvious thing in the world. You shoot your head up, looking at her helplessly. “How did you know?” you ask in awe. She chuckles, “Dear I was a healer for some time of my life. I’m also a Mother. I know these things, I can tell. It is true, isn’t it?” Wordlessly, you nod. “Have you told Theseus yet?” she asks. Your voice breaks, “No. I can’t, not yet. I need to get through this wedding first. I’m sorry.” She replies, “Don’t be sorry, I understand perfectly. In fact, probably better than most. You see I was also pregnant with Thes when I married his father. So I will say nothing about it. Does anyone else know?” You respond, “Newt was first to know, before even me actually. I knew I was gaining weight but I didn’t know why. Newt told me.” She laughs, “Yes that does seem like him.” Noticing how incredibly stressed and scared you are she reassures you, “Don’t worry about a thing my dear. This wedding will go swimmingly. I guarantee it.” Rising to your feet, you hug her tightly. “Thank you,” you gush with gratitude. “Of course,” she manages to say, overcome with emotion.
There was no rehearsal dinner, Mrs. Scamander assured you the day would go off without a hitch. After a nice, home cooked meal, you wander upstairs to Theseus’s childhood bedroom. Stepping in the doorway, you immediately smile at your surroundings. The room screamed Theseus. The bed neatly made, all of his textbooks were lined up neatly on the shelf according to subject. Walking over, you pick up a picture frame that sat on the bedside table. It was a childhood photo of Newt and Theseus climbing in a tree that you recognized to be behind the house. Theseus knocks on the door behind you and chuckles, “Can I come in?” You smile widely at him and leap into his arms. Theseus welcomes the hug, wrapping his arms tightly around you. “I can’t wait for tomorrow,” he breathes into the night air. “I can’t wait either my darling,” you reply. Still on your tiptoes, you slowly return your feet to the ground. Looking up into his brilliant blue gaze, you ask, “Darling I know that tradition says we shouldn’t be together the night before the wedding, but do I really have to sleep in a separate room?” Theseus doesn’t hesitate in saying, “Absolutely not. I need you to sleep by my side.” “Thank god,” you breathe a sigh of relief. Theseus picks you up in his arms and carries you over to the bed, all the while you giggle helplessly. “Theseus put me down,” you laugh loudly. He drops you on the bed. Crawling up to you, Theseus attacks your face with kisses. Pulling you close to him he breathes, “Last night as my fiance. Tomorrow my wife.” Then he falls asleep.
The next morning, the morning of your wedding, you’re immediately whisked away by Theseus’s mom. “The ceremony won’t wait,” she says in a singsong voice. Looking at Theseus helplessly, she drags you away into a different room. There, your wedding dress sits on a mannequin. “Do you think it will still fit?” you ask anxiously. “Of course it will,” she says confidently. “I’m going to get my curling iron, you get into your slip and then I’ll help you into the dress,” she tells you. When she leaves, you put on your white silk slip and stockings. She steps back in and takes the dress of the display, helping you into the gigantic skirt. “This gown is beautiful,” you’re still in awe of it as you put it on for the second time. Feeling the lace overlay between your fingers, you suck in a breath as Mrs. Scamander tries to zip you up. “It’s a tight fit,” she grunts as she struggles to zip it over your belly. “How far along do you reckon I am?” you ask her curiously. She thinks about it for a moment before replying, “I’d say you’re about 2 and a half months along. Only a mother or another woman would be able to tell. Don’t worry.” She finally gets the zipper up and you sigh in relief. Gazing into the mirror, you study your belly closely. Cupping it gently with your hands, you think about the tiny life forming inside you. All you could feel was fear, this was definitely not planned. Bringing a sweet, innocent child into a world on the brink of war made you feel like the most terrible mother to be. Mrs. Scamander curled your hair and pinned it delicately back into a loose bun at the nape of your neck. A few wisps of your h/c hair framed your face. Attaching the veil to an ivory barrette, she pins the lace veil into your hair and it hangs delicately around your shoulders. WIth a few waves of her wand, she perfects your makeup by extending your eyelashes and blushing your cheeks. “You look like an angel,” she beams at you. “Thank you,” you blush in response.
Across the Scamander household Theseus nervously straightens his bowtie, looking in the mirror of his bedroom. Newt walks in. “Nervous?” Newt asks his older brother. Theseus laughs, his voice trembling. “A bit,” he admits, running a hand through his curls. Newt feels a pang in his chest, sympathy for his brother. A man who never thought about himself, who always put others first, was about to gain one more responsibility. True to his selfless personality, Theseus asks, “How’s my y/n doing?” Newt responds, “She looks beautiful. She’s eager to see you.” Theseus gulps, nodding. Self consciously adjusting his hair, Theseus looks in the mirror one last time. “Time to go,” Newt says quietly. Theseus follows his brother down the stairs and out the door behind the house. He gasps at the sight of his tiny backyard meadow that he grew up in. There were dozens of white chairs set up in the grass, all of them facing an archway that stood at the end of the aisle. The archway was also white and had wildflowers strung through the entire thing. Theseus shakily made his way towards it, Newt and Tina following behind him. Tina would be your only bridesmaid and Newt his only groomsmen. Taking their spots, the entire audience, composed mostly of ministry employees, turned around expectantly, searching for the bride.
On the other side of the backdoor, you fiddled nervously with your hands. You gasped as you realized there was no one to give you away. “Mrs. Scamander,” you reach for her hands, “Will you walk me down the aisle? I don’t have any parents, and you’ve done so much for me already.” She chokes back her emotion, “Of course my dear. Nothing would make me happier.” She wraps her arm around your own and escorts you towards the door. As the door opens, you unconsciously place a hand to your stomach. Descending the steps, you move your hand to lift the extravagant gown, revealing your simple nude flats. A gust of wind travels across the grass and your veil blows behind you. Music travels softly to your ears as Mrs. Scamander leads you down the path towards the aisle. Your eyes refuse to look up and you stare at the grass in front of you, placing one foot in front of the other. Halfway down the aisle, you finally look up. Tears spring up in your eyes at the sight before you. Beneath an archway of beautiful wildflowers stood the man you love. Theseus clasps his hands together at his waist and stares at you. He wore a gray suit that fit him extremely well, with a blue tie that matched his eyes almost perfectly. Tears formed on his own face as he looked you over. He stood, unashamed, letting tears stream down his cheeks. Newt stood beside him, and Tina on the other side of the archway. As you grew closer, all the worries and anxieties you had melted away. All that was left was Theseus. Sweet, handsome, beautiful Theseus. He wipes the tears from his face and drinks you in with his blue eyed gaze, the longing in them extremely evident. Coming to a stop in front of him, Mrs. Scamander places your hand in her eldest son’s. Then she turns to sit.
“Hello darling,” You choke out, overcome with the strongest emotions you’ve ever felt. “You look beautiful,” Theseus breathes in awe. “Thank you darling,” you reply. The wizard presiding over the ceremony begins to speak, telling the audience what it means to love someone selflessly and unconditionally. Then it is time for your vows. He turns to you first. Taking in a large breath, you look to Theseus, your rock, and begin, “Theseus, nothing about our relationship is conventional. When I met you, I was in awe of all your accomplishments, I felt so small compared to you. But what I noticed the most about you Theseus, was how compassionate you are. I could see how much you felt, the pain, the joy, everything. From the moment I met you I began to admire you greatly. And Theseus when I first danced with you, when you held me in your arms, I felt something that I hadn't felt in such a long time. Home. So when you went missing, I was devastated. I was lost again, I didn’t have a home. You are everything to me. Theseus I have watched you so many times put others before yourself. You are the kindest man I know. I promise you Theseus that I will spend the rest of my days trying to be as kind, as selfless, and as compassionate as you. I love you.” By the end of your vows you’re weeping openly. Theseus looks at you with the utmost admiration as he speaks, “Y/n, I fell in love with you the moment I met you. Your beauty, your passion, it floored me in a heartbeat. And I felt guilty, guilty for being able to fall in love again so easily. But as I thought more and more about it, there was no doubt in my mind that you are the person I was always destined to end up with. It was always you. You are my muse, my darling, my heaven. I promise to always be your home. There’s nothing that I love more than holding you in my arms, reveling in everything about your presence. I’m going to spend the rest of my days making sure you know just how much I love you.” The wizard pronounces you husband and wife and Theseus kisses you deeply, holding you in his arms.
The chairs are cleared away and a dance floor is put in its place. Soft music travels through the air and Theseus immediately pulls you towards the dance floor, insisting on your first dance as husband and wife. Dipping his head down, he lets you wrap your arms around his neck and he pulls you close, his hands resting on your waist. Your head rests against his chest, listening contently to his heart fluttering. “You look so beautiful my darling wife,” Theseus whispers in your ear. Looking up at him you smile, “And you grow more handsome each and every day my darling husband.” Theseus dips his face down to yours, pressing his lips to your own. The kiss tastes sweet, and you revel in the feeling. Joy pumps through you as you think about kissing this man for the rest of your life. “I love you,” you sigh in contentment. Your husband continues to spin you around as other couples soon join in the celebration. When the song ends, your friends applaud you. Theseus leads you over to the head table and pulls a chair out for you. “I’ve got to run to the washroom real quick. Be back in a moment,” you kiss Theseus on the cheek. He nods and watches as you grab Tina, no doubt to help you with your gown. Newt walks up beside his brother and wraps an arm around him. “Happy?” Newt asks the question casually. Theseus’s voice flutters, “The happiest.”
Inside the house, you walk through the kitchen and towards the living room, Tina a few paces behind you. Your feet skid to a stop as you see a figure standing, looking out the window. That platinum white hair was unmistakable anywhere. Your heart drops into the pit of your stomach. Sharing a fleeting glance with Tina, you watch as she hides herself around the corner, shielding herself from view but still able to hear you. Gellert’s gravelly voice comes across the air high and clear, “Congratulations y/n. Or should I say Mrs. Scamander. I hope you enjoyed your wedding.” He turns to face you and you stand frozen in fear. He strolls towards you and simpers, “You look beautiful I must say.” “What do you want?” you try to appear brave, strong. He laughs, “I think I’ve found a way to get everything I want. And you’re going to help with that.” Your fists ball up the fabric of your wedding dress, your feet screaming at you to run as fast as you can in the opposite direction. “What could you want with me?” you ask quietly. He steps towards you, taking a strand of your hair in between his fingers, studying your face awfully closely. “Well you, my dear, are the perfect bargaining chip. You see until recently, I thought that Theseus Scamander had no weaknesses. But recently, I realized I was wrong. You are the one weakness that both Scamander brother’s have in common. They both care about you greatly, but in different ways. And they’d do anything to make sure no harm befalls you. This is what I need,” he says, drawing out the explanation. Your feet move slowly backward, but you stop a few feet short of Tina’s hiding spot. Under no circumstances would you reveal that Tina was also there. Grindelwald removes a parchment from his pocket and places it delicately on the living room table. Your eyes glanced over to it and you read the message. It said, “Y/n is gone. Return the blood pact in exchange for your wife, or she won’t be found alive. You know where to find me.” “He won’t do it, you know,” you argue with the wizard. Grindelwald lets out a high pitched laugh, saying, “I’m willing to bet he will.” A look of pure destruction flashes across his eyes and you turn towards the door, ready to run. He picks up on this, and appears directly behind you, wand to your throat. “I believe you’re familiar with Nurmengard. No doubt you’ll be excited to return,” he sneers. Tightening his grip on you, Grindelwald disapparates, holding you captive.
Tina slowly emerges from her hiding place, tears staining her eyes. “Oh y/n,” she says breathlessly. Her eyes are glued to the spot where you disappeared. Then her attention is drawn away towards the door as Theseus and Newt walk into view. “We decided to come check on you. You two were taking awfully long,” Newt chuckles. He stops when he sees Tina’s face. Theseus senses her sadness and asks the dreaded question, “Where’s y/n?” Tina looks at the auror, fresh tears covering her brown eyes. “Y/n’s gone,” she croaks, “Grindelwald took her.” Theseus’s eyes widen in fear and he places a hand on the wall next to him, struggling not to collapse. “He was here?” he whispers. Tina nods. Her feet carry her to the table, picking up the message. She sobs, “He took her to Nurmengard. He wants to make a trade. Y/n for the blood pact.” She hands the paper over to the elder Scamander. This entire time, Newt stands silent, his body paralyzed by fear for you and your unborn child. Theseus turns to Newt and for the first time he asks his brother, “What do we do? Newt, what do I do?” Newt’s widened gaze turns to meet his brother’s and he goes to speak, but nothing comes out. Clearing his throat, Newt says, “This is bad. This is bad. This is really bad.” Theseus cries, “I know that! What do we do? We can’t put her in danger.” Newt suddenly shakes his head profusely. “No you don’t understand,” he tells his brother. Theseus stops mid pace and turns to his younger sibling. “What don’t I understand?” he asks, eerily calm. Newt drops the glass in his hand and it shatters against the hardwood floor. He breathes barely audible, “Y/n’s pregnant Theseus. She’s carrying your child.” It’s then that Theseus’s hand slips from the wall, and he crashes to his knees. “She’s pregnant?” he looks up at Newt, asking for confirmation. Newt slowly nods. “Oh god,” Theseus stutters. Overcome with fury, Theseus raises his wand, shattering all the windows of the house. He lets a scream of agony and pain rip through the air as he rises to his feet. Expelling all of his energy into the outburst, he runs a hand through his curls, the weight of his worry for you pressing down on him stronger than ever. “Y/n,” he breathes your name into the air as the tears finally came.
Nurmengard Castle, Austria
Your eyes flickered open, adjusting to the darkness. Moving to stand, your hands press against chains. And as everything comes into focus you realize your chained against the wall of a Nurmengard dungeon cell. Looking down at your belly you sigh. Still in your wedding dress, you silently pray that someone would tell Theseus. And for the first time you speak to your unborn child. “We’ll be okay. I won’t let anything happen to you,” you breathe quietly, trying to reassure yourself as much as the baby. Hopelessness soon overtakes you and begin to cry, the tears dripping onto your now dirty gown. “Please find us,” you sigh, hoping that by some miracle, Theseus could hear you.

VNC 37 Thoughts
I really enjoyed this chapter; I feel like with this we’re in the final stretch of this arc and things have picked up in speed quite a bit.
We finally complete the flashback between Chloé and Jeanne and it’s as heart wrenching as I thought it might be. We also finally have the events confirmed. Jeanne was going to kill Chloé, couldn’t manage it, and Chloé decided things had gone too far. She would commit suicide to spare Jeanne the pain of doing it herself.
I’m not sure what Jeanne thought she could do here. Her mission was to kill Chloé but I think we see her finally consider whether doing her duty as a borreau is actually worth it or not. She cares for Chloé; we know she didn’t want to kill her and in the present she still doesn’t. I wonder, once Jeanne realizes what Chloé’s actual goal is and that she isn’t the beast, what will she do? I mean, we know Ruthven is essentially working with Charlatan and Naenia but I don’t think Jeanne knows that. If she disobeys Ruthven here what will happen to her?
At any rate, it’s only when Chloé is at her lowest that she agrees to make a deal with Naenia. Behold:
I’m pretty sure everyone noticed how similar this panel is to a certain panel with Naenia and Noé from volume 2:
Of course, it looks like a kiss but more to the point this is often how demonic pacts are sealed in fiction. That’s probably because a kiss is supposed to be an exchange of breath, i.e. your soul (this is why you kiss at a wedding). Naenia takes a vampire’s name--which in this series is fundamentally their soul--in the same way a demon would seal a deal. What we’re seeing here is her basically sucking the soul right out of them.
What’s interesting is Chloé fooled the demon; she changed the terms to suit herself and Naenia has no one to blame but herself. She made some assumptions and didn’t really clarify what the end result of their deal would be. The big question is whether Chloé can succeed. Sure, Naenia has a physical form that can be killed but there’s no way things are going to go that smoothly.
When Vanitas finally shows up on the scene it’s about what we’d expect.
Got to love that slow clap of congratulations. Still, much as he’s trying to play it cool, he’s obviously still sick. I wonder if this will continue when he and Noé get back to Paris.
It turns out Naenia doesn’t have the book (a lot of my predictions were wrong but that’s par the course with Mochizuki, so you know XD) but it is lost!
Still, Vanitas is trying to stand by what he told Noé, which I find interesting.
This isn’t what he was naturally inclined to do but he’s taking Noé’s desires into account even when he isn’t there. Noé has yet to actually convince him but Vanitas is giving it time and seeing what Chloé has to say for herself.
He also seems to have some personal investment in this:
While Noé is worried about what “salvation” looks like for Chloé, Vanitas is curious about what she means by “revenge.” The difference in their priorities reflects the difference in their personalities very well. Noé wants to save people and he wants to make sure he goes about it the right way. He wants to understand them to accomplish this. Vanitas talks a lot about saving people but that isn’t where his heart lies; he’s in this for himself, for his personal revenge. He gets this about Chloé in a way Noé might not (this could be proven otherwise later) and may even relate to her. Chloé is also being selfish; she wants revenge for what happened to Jean-Jacques but she isn’t emphasizing how she wants to save him. She wants to punish Naenia. It’s a very different thing.
When Vanitas realizes her goal isn’t to destroy Gévaudan but to give Naenia form he finally draws the line. Up to that point he was willing to talk to her. I mean, he was just told a city would be wiped from the map and he was trying to debate the merits of it. But the second Naenia is about to gain a physical form he jumps straight to “Dante, shoot her!”
It’s very tempting to say Vanitas’s priorities are a little skewed here but we also don’t know the implications of Naenia gaining a body. A lot of us think she may be Vanitas of the Blue Moon, in which case Vanitas absolutely would not want that to happen. And yet, he never acts like that’s who she is whenever they meet, so I’m unsure. I don’t really have a guess as to the danger of Naenia gaining a body other than it will somehow make her far more powerful than she is, something Chloé doesn’t realize.
Regardless, I think his first thought was that Chloé was going to side with Naenia. When he finds out otherwise his expression is telling:
He’s taken aback and maybe a little frightened? Things definitely aren’t going according to whatever plan Vanitas may have had. I’m definitely looking forward to the next chapter.
I do have a few other thoughts though. I found it interesting that Vanitas said this to Chloé:
This fits in with Vanitas’s motives: he isn’t trying to help other people, not really. Like I said before, his motivations are purely personal: revenge.
And yet, this also isn’t entirely true. He has definitely allied himself with Noé. That’s the whole reason he’s willing to spend time talking to Chloé in the first place. It’s why he’s tentatively agreed to heal her. What he wants to do is get the book and possibly stop her from empowering Charlatan but he was going to give up on curing her entirely if Noé hadn’t said anything. So, there is at least one part of all of this where Vanitas’s motivations aren’t entirely selfish and that’s the part where he’s considering what Noé wants. (You could make the argument that that could also be a little selfish since he kind of needs Noé around to succeed in his goals regardless, but I’m not convinced that’s the bulk of it.)
One final little detail I enjoyed: the return of the pendulum!
Tracking waves still sounds like dowsing to me, so I feel relatively confident in saying that’s what it is. Still, I’m very curious about what these stones are; no one is actually naming them. There’s no need to be vague about this unless it’s somehow relevant to the plot. Maybe they’re astermite?
Edit: Also! I think the kind of relationship Chloé and Jean-Jacques had is kind of confirmed? It seems to me like they love each other. We knew Jean-Jacques would do anything for her and now we know the feeling is reciprocated. If there are supposed to be parallels between those two and Vanitas and Noé then this could give us an idea of what they’re headed for or what they need to avoid--complete obsession. That’s very much just a theory at this point; I doubt we’ll really know for sure till the end of the series.
And one more thing, I really do love that Chloé, who was about to let everything go as she falls off that cliff, is won over by Naenia in the most hilarious way possible. I mean, Naenia was right, she definitely wanted revenge and she wasn’t satisfied with how things were. Unfortunately for Naenia she only motivated Chloé to kill her... It’s kind of awesome.

Aftermath
Closed RP with @regretismyconstantcompanion
Seeing Hogwarts for the first time in years brought back bittersweet memories of his expulsion and heart felt nostalgia of being a student sneaking out of the castle and into the forbidden forest hunting all manner of creature he was lucky enough to come by.
It was a shame he was now back under unfavourable circumstances.
The aftermath of Paris was just beginning to make headline news around the world, soon the entire globe would see the British Ministry painted by two different pen strokes. They either attacked innocent bystanders under the pretence of upholding the law or they intervened at Grindelwald’s illegal rally encouraging the suppression of muggles by any means necessary and innocent Aurors were incinerated in retaliation.
Needless to say the journey home had been sombre.
Leta had sacrificed herself, she had died fighting for a world that had rejected her very essence in order to save them.
Newt had been forced to wrench Theseus from the fight and his brother had crumbled in his arms; his heart had scattered into pieces and barely spoken a word since.
Jacob had been sat quietly next to Tina with unspilled tears in his eyes, reeling with loss and rejection. Queenie had been persuaded by Grindelwald's charms and was now lost in his network of followers, being a natural legilimens she was valuable, which meant getting her back was going to be next to impossible.
Meanwhile Newt was once again battling his own failures, he had failed Credence, he should have tracked him down sooner. Then perhaps Paris would never have happened. Leta would be alive, Jacob and Queenie would have been happy in New York. Newt could have prevented all this pain.
‐‐--
A quiet sniffle and gently pawing brought Newt back to the present and away from his pitiful thoughts. Teddy had been at the battle in Paris and suffered his own war wounds, Newt had scooped him up and managed to heal his superficial scraps.
Really, Newt should have predicted that with a coliseum full of people wearing their best, Teddy would have gone hunting for every shiny object his beady eyes could see. Grindelwald had apparently been no exception to this rule and Newt discovered the blood pact in his pouch as he spelled him better.
Suddenly, Dumbledore's lack of physical intervention all clicked into place
Everyone knew the rumours that Grindelwald and Dumbledore had been close once, not that Newt cared, he never put stock in gossip but their was no denying a blood pact made between two of the most powerful wizards in living memory. The necklace was identical to a trinket Dumbledore himself owned.
With this knowledge Newt had asked Nicolas Flamel to send an owl to Albus stating they needed to meet immediately, under the guise of relaying the events of Paris just in case the owl was intercepted. Teddy had unintentionally given them a silver lining and perhaps with both halves of the necklace Dumbledore could find away of breaking the pact.
----------
There was an unspoken tension rippling between the group as they waited for Albus, together they had been through so much in an incredibly short space of time, they all demanded answers to questions that seemed too painful to speak of right now. The battle was still raw.
Emerging from the fog, Albus came towards them and Newt met Dumbledore half way. What they needed to talk of required some privacy.
Nevertheless news of Leta had already travelled to Hogwarts, Newt confirmed she had passed away and distracted Albus with the pendant instead, if he spoke of Leta aloud Newt would become visibly upset. No one had had the chance to morn, now was not the time.
Watching his plan worked as Dumbledore's face went from bewilderment to blossoming delight was satisfying. Newt felt pleased he had managed to do something right, even if getting hold of the pendant was a happy accident. He explained that Teddy had swiped the pact and Grindelwald was none the wiser.
"Do you think you can destroy it?" He asked, if anyone could find a way it would be Albus. If they could break the pact, Dumbledore would be able to move against Grindelwald freely.

NEW YORK | Iranian official puts Trump on notice about nuclear deal

NEW YORK | Iranian official puts Trump on notice about nuclear deal
NEW YORK — President Donald Trump and Iran’s top diplomat have traded sharp warnings, with Trump threatening “bigger problems” than ever if Tehran restarts its nuclear program. Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif put the president on notice, telling The Associated Press if the U.S. pulls out of the nuclear deal, Iran “mostly likely” would abandon it, too.
In a wide-ranging interview Tuesday, Zarif said a U.S. withdrawal from the landmark 2015 accord would undermine Trump’s talks with North Korea by proving that America reneges on its promises. He said if Trump re-imposes sanctions, “basically killing the deal,” Iran would no longer be bound by the pact’s international obligations, freeing it up to resume enrichment far beyond the deal’s strict limits.
“If the United States were to withdraw from the nuclear deal, the immediate consequence in all likelihood would be that Iran would reciprocate and withdraw,” Zarif said. He added: “There won’t be any deal for Iran to stay in.”
As Zarif spoke in New York on Tuesday, Trump was meeting at the White House with French President Emmanuel Macron, who has been leading an effort by France, Britain and Germany to find “fixes” to the deal that would satisfy Trump’s objections. Few expect such a solution can be found by May 12, the date on which Trump has said he’ll leave the deal if there’s no fix agreed to with the Europeans.
“No one knows what I’m going to do on the 12th, although Mr. President, you have a pretty good idea,” Trump said, referring to Macron. He said if he does withdraw, he would look to see “if it will be possible to do a new deal with solid foundations, because this is a deal with decayed foundations.”
In a bleak warning to Tehran, Trump added that if Iran ever threatens the United States, “they will pay a price like few countries have ever paid.”
Iran has been working feverishly to frame Trump’s expected withdrawal as a major blot on the United States, just as America’s closest allies in Europe try to persuade the president not to rip it up. U.S. and European officials say they’ve made major progress on two of Trump’s demands — on nuclear inspections and Iran’s ballistic missiles program. But talks have stalemated on Trump’s third demand: that the deal be extended in perpetuity, rather than letting restrictions on Tehran to “sunset” after several years.
Iran has outright rejected any changes to the deal, arguing that it’s unfair to impose more demands beyond what Tehran agreed to already. Trump’s strategy relies on the assumption that if the U.S. and the Europeans unilaterally agree to new demands, Iran will back down and voluntarily comply in order to continue enjoying the benefits. Under the 2015 deal brokered by President Barack Obama and world powers, Iran agreed to nuclear restrictions in exchange for billions in sanctions relief.
And even if a so-called add-on deal with the Europeans is achieved, there is no guarantee it will satisfy Trump. His closest aides have said they can’t predict with certainty what conditions would be enough to keep him in the pact.
As Trump prepares for a high-stakes summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un aimed at resolving nuclear weapons concerns, Zarif emphasized that U.S. credibility was at stake. He said Iran would welcome lower tensions on the Korean Peninsula, but that Trump was showing the world that the U.S. is “not a trustworthy, reliable negotiating partner.”
“They’re prepared to take everything that you’ve given, then renege on the promises that they have made in the deal,” Zarif said. “That makes the United States a rather unlikely partner in any international agreement. And unfortunately this track record is not just limited to the nuclear deal. It includes the Paris climate agreement, the Trans-Pacific Partnership, and a lot of other freely undertaken commitments of the United States.”
Iran has long insisted its nuclear program was peaceful and not oriented toward building weapons. Yet in the interview, Zarif suggested that those concerned that Tehran was racing toward a bomb would have much more to fear if it were no longer bound by limits on its enrichment and processing.
“It would be a completely different situation, from the perspective of those who made a lot of noise about Iran’s nuclear program to begin with,” he said.
He also pointed out that if Trump upends the nuclear deal, Iran could also choose to leave the global Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, which aims to stop the spread of nuclear weapons. Iran signed that treaty decades ago, and though Zarif said Iran’s government isn’t advocating an exit, it is “one of the options that is being advocated by some” in Iran.
Zarif spoke to the AP at the official residence of Iran’s ambassador to the U.N., alongside Central Park. The top Iranian diplomat is in the United States this week on a long-shot bid to try to salvage the deal, while laying the groundwork for the United States to bear the blame on the global stage if Trump ultimately pulls out.
Addressing the conflict in Yemen, he said Iran is urging “everybody” to stop attacking civilian areas — including the Houthis. The Iran-backed Shiite rebels control much of Yemen and have been lobbing missiles at Saudi Arabia, which is leading a coalition fighting the Houthis with support from the U.S. The Trump administration and others insist that Iran is illicitly funneling missiles and other weapons to the Houthis, a charge that Tehran has repeatedly denied.
“All over, no matter where you go in the Middle East, you see the fingerprints of Iran behind problems,” Trump said.
His ambassador to the United Nations, Nikki Haley, has paraded missile parts ostensibly recovered in Saudi Arabia in front of reporters and U.N. Security Council diplomats, arguing that they bear markings and other characteristics proving their Iranian origin. But Zarif laughed off her claims.
“I’m not saying Ambassador Haley is fabricating, but somebody is fabricating the evidence she is showing,” Zarif said.
As Trump pushes to withdraw U.S. troops from Syria, Zarif gave no signs that Iran plans to do the same. The Iranian military advisers and Iran-backed Shiite militias aiding Syrian President Bashar Assad are a profound concern for the United States and its closest Mideast ally, Israel.
“We are there as long as that objective needs our presence, and as long as the Syrian government asks us to be there,” Zarif said.

How Trump changed the world in one year
New Post has been published on http://myviralthings.site/how-trump-changed-the-world-in-one-year/
How Trump changed the world in one year
Trump, with bull-in-a-Twitter-feed diplomacy reflecting his impulsive, combative character, has turned the United States into an unpredictable and disruptive force. His attitude is born of a belief in keeping his enemies — and friends — off balance and rooted in his view that the rest of the world is exploiting America and his belief that the burdens of US leadership are too costly.
Trump’s smoldering rhetoric, disdain for multilateral diplomacy, distrust of trade deals and apparent racial and religious prejudices have changed the kind of behavior the world expects from a US president.
Trump maintains that his leadership is clearing up a global “mess” he inherited, and “America is being respected again abroad.”
Yet his directional shift has compromised America’s image abroad, left the world uncertain about US policy on key issues and has allied leaders foundering as they work out whether flattering, appeasing, teaching or ignoring Trump works best.
Acting on a mandate
But no one should be surprised that Trump is acting on what he believes is a mandate from American voters.
A year ago in his inaugural address, Trump delivered a stark warning to a world that had watched his campaign with a mixture of fascination and horror: that long-held assumptions about US behavior were no longer operable.
“From this moment on, it’s going to be America First,” the President said.
The roots of his foreign policy were right there in the speech, as he painted a picture of a world that had exploited American generosity, ripped off US firms and workers and was festering with radical Islamic extremism.
He’s been as good as his word, putting his vision of America’s best interests first: pulling out of the Paris climate accord, ditching the vast Trans-Pacific Partnership trade pact, attempting to kill the Iran nuclear deal, castigating NATO leaders for not paying their fair share and saying he would move the US Embassy in Israel to Jerusalem.
Each decision flew in the face of international consensus and the best advice of foreign policy elites at home. Often, foreign policy decisions seemed to be motivated more by a desire to please the 35% or so of Americans who compose Trump’s base and embrace his populist nationalism than from any sense of long-range foreign policy strategy.
Trump’s fiery temperament, including flippant comments about the possibility of nuclear war, shattered conventions governing how presidents normally talk and engage with the world and have stoked fears about his readiness to lead in the event of a dangerous global crisis.
Trump’s militaristic rhetoric and decision to gut his own State Department, his attacks on the press, downplaying of human rights and cozying up to autocrats raised doubts about whether he subscribed not just to Western values, but also to the fundamental principles on which America is built.
Concern, mystification
A new Gallup poll released Thursday put global approval of US leadership at just 30%, down from 48% in the last year of President Barack Obama’s administration. Germany was the top-rated global power, while China had edged ahead of the United States, at 31%.
Across Europe, there is concern that issues crucial to the continent’s security, like the Iran nuclear deal and climate change, are becoming collateral damage to Trump’s desire to satisfy his political base.
In Asia, there is mystification about what often is viewed as a US retreat, at a moment when China is stronger and more aggressive than it has been for centuries and keen to exploit a power vacuum.
Part of the problem is that it’s often difficult to work out exactly what US foreign policy is on many issues.
There is the orthodox, Republican approach pursued by Defense Secretary James Mattis and Secretary of State Rex Tillerson enshrined in the new National Security Strategy.
Then there is the policy spelled out in Trump’s explosive tweets that have rebuked foreign leaders, poured oil on sensitive diplomatic negotiations and kept his own subordinates in line — as when he told Tillerson the secretary of state was “wasting his time” by trying to negotiate with North Korea over the nuclear crisis.
Yet, as always with Trump, there is a tendency for the noise and chaos he creates to trample cool analysis. Some foreign policy experts say his performance is in fact more proficient than he makes it look.
Alan Mendoza, executive director of the Henry Jackson Society think tank in London, says Trump is addressing the flaws of the Obama presidency, which he says was a period of retrenchment and decayed US prestige that left Iran rampant, Russia undeterred and North Korea racing toward a deliverable nuclear bomb and triggered human carnage in Syria.
“It is clear that President Trump is unorthodox. It is clear that he is offensive in some ways, but has he got results? In many ways he has,” Mendoza said.
Mendoza said Trump’s pressure appeared to have prompted European leaders to up military spending, and he praised the President for enforcing a red line against the use of chemical weapons in Syria with military action — unlike Obama. He said Trump’s approach has persuaded North Korea that the President is serious about potential military action, and may have prompted its diplomatic outreach to the South.
“There is a lot of focus on the methodology of how the Trump administration conducts its policy, and far less paid to the results of what is happening. It’s only one year in but we have seen some positive signs,” he added.
Power shift
Still, there is consternation in many parts of the world about Trump’s approach. In Asia, US friends worry that his withdrawal from the Trans-Pacific Partnership trade deal has ceded the primary role in writing the rules of a huge chunk of the global economy to China.
Chinese President Xi Jinping, meanwhile, has indicated he is ready to exploit perceptions that Washington is stepping back. He portrayed himself at last year’s World Economic Forum as the guardian of free trade, in a groundbreaking appearance that may have prompted Trump to travel next week to this year’s event in Davos, Switzerland.
The power shift is worrying key US allies in the region. Singapore’s Prime Minister Lee Hsieng Loong asked Americans a startling question in a speech in Washington last year: “What do you believe? Where do you stand? Do you still believe that you still have the most to gain from an interdependent world, open exchanges and multilateral rules?”
In the Middle East, the Trump administration has had perhaps its greatest foreign policy success, with the defeat of ISIS in Syria, albeit by carrying out a plan initiated by the Obama administration. Trump has repaired US relations with Saudi Arabia and is adopting a more confrontational posture toward Iran’s regional ambitions than the previous White House. But his decision to move the US Embassy in Israel could have killed the Middle East peace process.
European leaders have tried various approaches to deal with Trump but have found that his behavior and rhetoric have put them in tough political positions.
British Prime Minister Theresa May put her faith in the special relationship but Trump’s unpopularity, exacerbated by his retweet of posts by a far-right British hate group, made it politically unsustainable for him to visit the UK — a stunning development for America’s President and its closest ally.
French President Emmanuel Macron tried flattery — hosting Trump at a military parade on the Champs-Élysées, which the US President relished — but still could not persuade Trump to reverse his decision on the climate deal.
German Chancellor Angela Merkel lectured Trump on freedom, human rights and racial tolerance in her congratulatory message after his election win. After watching Trump berate fellow NATO leaders in Brussels in May, she suggested to Germans that Europe could no longer rely on the US to always be there, saying they “really must take our fate into our own hands.”
Much of the world is considering similar questions after the first year of Trump’s presidency, wondering whether he will succeed in a fundamental reordering of the US role in the world and what that turn inward will mean for the rest of the international system.
Allan Gyngell, national president of the Australian Institute of International Affairs, says the draining of the State Department by a secretary of state who seems uninterested in its mission adds to signs that the US is abandoning the field of international diplomacy, for example, in its withdrawals from the Paris deal and UNESCO.
“No doubt a more familiar sort of American government will take office in three or seven years, but the United States has been fundamentally altered by this experience,” Gyngell said.
“The high watermark of American liberal internationalism has passed.”

The Latest on Donald Trump and climate change (all times local):
———
5 p.m.
The leaders of France, Germany and Italy say the Paris climate accord cannot be renegotiated as President Donald Trump has demanded.
French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Italian Premier Paolo Gentiloni said in a joint statement Thursday that they take note “with regret” the U.S. decision to pull out of the 2015 agreement.
The three leaders say they regard the accord as “a cornerstone in the cooperation between our countries, for effectively and timely tackling climate change.”
They added that the course charted by the accord is “irreversible and we firmly believe that the Paris Agreement cannot be renegotiated.”
Macron, Merkel and Gentiloni say they remain committed to the deal and will “step up efforts” to support the poorest and most threatened nations.
———
5 p.m.
Microsoft’s President Brad Smith tweeted that the company is “disappointed” by President Donald Trump’s withdrawal from the Paris climate agreement. Smith says Microsoft will keep working to achieve the accord’s goals.
In an emailed statement, retail giant Amazon says it also still supports the climate agreement, and that clean-energy policies are good for American jobs and innovation.
———
4:55 p.m.
German Chancellor Angela Merkel (AHN’-geh-lah MEHR’-kuhl) says she regrets President Donald Trump’s decision to pull out of the Paris climate accord.
Her spokesman, Steffen Seibert, said Thursday on Twitter that Merkel would continue to put all efforts into climate policy “to save our Earth.”
Social Democratic members of Merkel’s Cabinet issued a separate joint statement saying “the United States is harming itself, us Europeans and all other people in the world.”
The ministers, including Germany’s top diplomat Sigmar Gabriel, said Trump’s move threatened economic growth and technical progress.
They called the decision “a political error, because it calls the international reliability of treaties into question.”
The ministers said they would “keep the door open” for the U.S. to rejoin the Paris accord again.
———
4:50 p.m.
Congressional Republicans are applauding President Donald Trump’s decision to withdraw from the Paris climate accord, but Democrats are slamming the decision.
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell says Trump has “put families and jobs ahead of left-wing ideology and should be commended.”
House Speaker Paul Ryan says that “the Paris climate agreement was simply a raw deal for America.”
But Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer of New York says the move is “a devastating failure of historic proportions” — and “one of the worst policy moves made in the 21st century.”
House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi of California says it’s “a stunning abdication of American leadership and a grave threat to our planet’s future.”
———
4:50 p.m.
Energy Secretary Rick Perry says President Donald Trump’s decision to withdraw from the Paris climate agreement means the U.S. “will no longer be bound by an agreement unilaterally entered into by the Obama administration.”
Perry is a former Texas governor. He says that instead of preaching about clean energy, the Trump administration will act on it.
Perry adds: “Our work and deeds are more important than empty words. I know you can drive economic growth and protect the environment at the same time, because that is exactly what I did as governor of Texas.”
Perry is on a nine-day trip to Japan and China. He said from Tokyo that the U.S. will continue to develop “next generation technology” in energy, including nuclear energy, liquefied natural gas and renewables such as wind and solar power.
———
4:40 p.m.
President Donald Trump has lost the support of a top billionaire business leader over his decision to withdraw from the Paris climate deal.
Elon Musk writes on Twitter that he is “departing presidential councils,” something he had vowed to do if Trump took this step. Musk writes: “Climate change is real. Leaving Paris is not good for America or the world.”
Musk is the founder of SpaceX and Tesla among other companies. He’s been a member of Trump’s infrastructure council, manufacturing jobs council and strategic and policy forum.
General Electric CEO Jeff Immelt, another member of Trump’s business councils, writes on Twitter that he is “disappointed” with Trump’s decision on Paris.
Says Immelt, “Industry must now lead and not depend on government.”
———
4:40 p.m.
Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke (ZIN’-kee) is applauding President Donald Trump’s decision to withdraw from the Paris climate agreement. His reaction comes a day after Zinke said he could not comment on the accord because he had not read it.
Zinke said Thursday during a visit to Alaska that “America’s energy and economic destiny should be up to the United States, not the United Nations.”
Zinke praised Trump for taking “bold and decisive action to pull the U.S. out of the poorly negotiated Paris accord that would kill American jobs and manufacturing while doing little to protect the environment.”
Zinke told reporters Wednesday that he has “yet to read what the actual Paris agreement is” and “would like to sit down and read” the 2015 accord before commenting.
———
4:35 p.m.
John Kerry says President Donald Trump has taken “a self-destructive step” that puts America last.
The former secretary of state is a co-signer of the Paris climate accord. He released a statement Thursday following Trump’s decision to withdraw the U.S. from the agreement.
Kerry says it’s “an unprecedented forfeiture of American leadership which will cost us influence, cost us jobs and invite other countries to walk away from solving humanity’s most existential crisis.”
Kerry called the decision “an ignorant, cynical appeal to an anti-science, special-interest faction far outside the mainstream.”
Kerry signed the agreement at the U.N. in 2016 with his granddaughter seated on his lap.
He says, “That is no basis for a decision that will affect billions of lives.”
———
4:35 p.m.
Former Mexican President Vicente Fox is harshly criticizing President Donald Trump for withdrawing the United States from the Paris climate agreement.
Fox has clashed with Trump since last year’s presidential campaign, and he let loose Thursday with a series of tweets saying the decision “condemns this generation and those to come.”
Fox tweets of Trump: “He’s declaring war on the planet itself.”
He accused Trump of “leaving a dark legacy just to satisfy your greediness” and surrendering the nation’s future.
Fox concludes: “United States has stopped being the leader of the free world. @realDonaldTrump, single handed, took care of that.”
———
4:20 p.m.
Mayors from major cities around the world say they remain committed to the Paris climate accord despite President Donald Trump’s decision to pull out of the deal.
In a statement Thursday, mayors of the world’s megacities committed to addressing climate change said that despite the U.S. move, American cities can continue to play a role in trying to prevent catastrophic global warming.
The mayor of Paris, Anne Hidalgo, says climate change “poses a unique threat to the future of our planet, and puts in peril the health, prosperity, security and the very survival of our children and grandchildren.”
Hidalgo says she’s urging the Trump administration to reconsider the decision.
Steve Adler, the mayor of Austin, Texas, said his city won’t stop fighting climate change.
———
4:20 p.m.
The European Union’s top climate change official says President Donald Trump’s decision to pull out of the Paris accord makes it “a sad day for the global community.”
The EU’s climate action commissioner, Miguel Arias Canete (cah-NEY’-tey), said in a statement Thursday that the bloc “deeply regrets the unilateral decision by the Trump administration.”
Canete says the 2015 accord is “ambitious yet not prescriptive.”
He says the agreement will endure, and he pledged that “the world can continue to count on Europe for global leadership.”
Canete also predicted that the EU would seek new alliances from the world’s largest economies to the most vulnerable island states, as well as U.S. businesses and individuals supportive of the accord.
He added: “We are on the right side of history.”
———
4:20 p.m.
Norway’s largest pension fund, Storebrand, says it will continue to invest in renewable energy despite President Donald Trump’s decision to pull out of the Paris climate accord.
Storebrand says “the transition toward a greener economy in the U.S. will not stop due to withdrawing from the Paris agreement.”
The fund, which has 53 billion euros ($59.5 billion) in assets under management, said in a statement Thursday that “Donald Trump is jumping off a train that has already left the station.”
Chief executive Odd Arild Grefstad cited the growth of renewable energy in states such as Texas, New York and California as signs that “the world has started the transition from fossil to a renewable economy.”
He added: “We will continue to invest accordingly.”
———
4:15 p.m.
Former Vice President Al Gore is calling the decision to exit the Paris agreement “a reckless and indefensible action.”
Gore says the move “undermines America’s standing in the world.” He released the statement as President Donald Trump was speaking at the White House Rose Garden.
The former vice president has defined his postgovernment life as a climate champion. He urges mayors, governors and the business community to take up where Trump is leaving off, especially by focusing on clean energy.
Gore says: “We are in the middle of a clean energy revolution that no single person or group can stop. President Trump’s decision is profoundly in conflict with what the majority of Americans want from our president.”
———
4:10 p.m.
The U.S. Conference of Mayors says it strongly opposes President Donald Trump’s decision to withdraw from the Paris climate accord and vows that the nation’s mayors will continue efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions blamed for global warming.
The mayors said in a statement Thursday that the U.S. and other nations need to address climate change to become energy independent, self-reliant and resilient.
New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu, the group’s vice president, called climate change a grave threat to coastal communities, the nation and the world. He said that if unchecked, sea-level rise caused by climate change could mean that New Orleans and other coastal cities “will cease to exist.”
Landrieu said withdrawal from the Paris agreement “is shortsighted and will be devastating to Americans in the long run.”
———
4 p.m.
President Donald Trump says the Paris accord is more about other nations gaining a “financial advantage” over the U.S. than it is about climate change.
The president is speaking in the White House Rose Garden Thursday where he just announced America’s withdrawal from the Paris climate change accord.
Trump says, “This agreement is less about the climate and more about other countries obtaining a financial advantage over the United States.”
The president said the agreement gives “countries an economic edge over the United States,” adding, “that’s not going to happen while I’m president.”
He says that he is seeking to create a “level playing field” and establish the “highest standard of living, highest standard of environmental protection.”
Trump adds, “I was elected to represent the citizens of Pittsburgh, not Paris.”

President Donald Trump says the United States will immediately cease “all implementation” of Paris climate change accord standards.

He also said that the United States would be willing to re-enter the deal on “better terms.”

President Donald Trump has announced that the U.S. will withdraw from the Paris climate agreement, but will begin negotiations to “re-enter either the Paris accord or an entirely new transaction.”
Trump says during a White House Rose Garden announcement that the U.S. will exit the landmark climate agreement aimed at reducing carbon emissions to slow climate change.
Trump says the deal “disadvantages” the U.S. and is causing lost jobs and lower wages.
The announcement fulfills one of Trump’s top campaign pledges. But it also undermines world efforts to combat global warming.
The U.S. had agreed under former President Barack Obama to reduce emissions to 26 percent to 28 percent of 2005 levels by 2025 — about 1.6 billion tons.

Former President Barack Obama says the Trump administration is joining “a small handful of nations that reject the future” by withdrawing from the Paris climate change pact.
Obama is defending the deal that his administration painstakingly negotiated. He says the countries that stay in the Paris deal will “reap the benefits in “jobs and industries created.” He says the U.S. should be “at the front of the pack.”
The former president says in a statement that Trump’s decision reflects “the absence of American leadership.” But Obama says he’s confident nonetheless that U.S. cities, states and businesses will fill the void by taking the lead on protecting the climate.
Obama says that businesses have chosen “a low-carbon future” and are already investing heavily in renewable sources like wind and solar.

President Donald Trump will announce his decision on whether to pull the United States out of the Paris climate accord during a Rose Garden event Thursday afternoon.
Trump promoted his announcement Wednesday night on Twitter, after a day in which U.S. allies around the world sounded alarms about the likely consequences of a U.S. withdrawal. Trump himself kept everyone in suspense, saying he was still listening to “a lot of people both ways.”
The White House signaled that Trump was likely to decide on exiting the global pact — fulfilling one of his principal campaign pledges — though top aides were divided. And the final decision may not be entirely clear-cut: Aides were still deliberating on “caveats in the language,” one official said.
Everyone cautioned that no decision was final until Trump announced it. The president has been known to change his thinking on major decisions and tends to seek counsel from both inside and outside advisers, many with differing agendas, until the last minute.
