Who's Training Whom? or A Screed Of Reasonable Length About Why Étoiles Is Still 15-0 In My Heart

So, through this whole Codes vs Étoiles arc, we've been repeating the question over and over again: who is training whom? Are the codes training Étoiles? Or is he training them? Is he just making them stronger and stronger? Well, it turns out the answer is neither because Étoiles is learning and innovating and developing new tricks and techniques and the codes have learned a grand total of One (1) trick and are mostly relying on Number Go Up in a way that's antithetical to everything I personally enjoy about Minecraft PVP.

The rest of this will be under a cut on account of how reasonable the length is.

Okay, so what makes Minecraft PVP more engaging to me than PVP in other roleplay or video game genres? Well, the thing that makes it unique is that everyone is starting from a completely even playing field. Look at it this way: if a DND Barbarian and Rogue of roughly equal level just stand there and take turns hitting each other, the Barbarian wins. The Barbarian has more health and does more damage and that's going to tell pretty quickly. Of course, there are ways to compensate for it and the Rogue can think on their feet and engineer a situation where they win and of course there are also advantages to playing a squishier class, but the point is that there are squishier classes and squishier players.

Minecraft doesn't have that. Everyone has the same number of hearts and can theoretically use the same weapons and armor. If you and a friend jump into a Minecraft world and just stand there and take turns hitting each other, whoever goes first wins.

That means consistently winning at Minecraft PVP requires you to get good at thinking on your feet and engineering situations to your advantage. You aren't a tank by virtue of picking the tank class at the start of the game, but you can become a tank by making a turtle farm for turtle master potions. You aren't a damage dealer because you selected the high DPS character five minutes ago but because you spent hours grinding the resources to upgrade your weapons to the best they can possibly be. You aren't winning fights because the stats on your gear are higher than anyone else's. You're winning fights because you know how to control the fight so that you can hit the other guy more than they can hit you. If you're winning fights with other PVPers, it's because you're better than them at their own game.

Unless you're the QSMP Code Monster.

And like, to be clear, I don't blame the admin(s) for getting frustrated enough to brute force it. We know current 06 is competent PVPer and so are a couple others we haven't identified for sure yet, but I doubt they were hired specifically to be cracked at PVP. But like, they also do have to fulfill the role in the story of being cracked enough at PVP to kill either the super well defended eggs or the French Beast. Like, they do deserve to take some shortcuts.

But also, it does really really undermine the narrative of the codes and Étoiles training each other when the codes aren't really learning from Étoiles because there's a lot they could teach him.

For example, they haven't really made much progress on learning to outmaneuver them. Watch back any fight where he's fighting them 2v1 after the sweeping edge bug gets fixed. If you're fighting someone 2v1, you want to be attacking them from two different sides since they can only defend and counterattack from one side at a time. Watch how often they're both attacking him from the same direction. That's not an accident. That's Étoiles constantly moving to keep both his enemies where he can see them and it's not something they've made much progress on dealing with. The fact that they'll have three codes present but only two of them attacking at once pretty clearly demonstrates that they haven't recognized the importance of using the numbers advantage and negating the shield.

(Also, this isn't super relevant, but Étoiles is a master of healing potion usage. Watch how often he throws them ahead of where he's running so he maximizes how much he splashes on himself and minimizes how much he splashes on the codes. It's good stuff.)

One really clear moment that shows how the admins have a tendency to brute force their way through Étoiles related problems is in the fight in the basement of the lore dungeon where Étoiles was convinced he was going to die and the admins had to give him a goodie bag afterwards. At one point, he digs himself down into a 1x1 hole and a code follows him down into the hole to attack him and prevent him from warping away. He grapples out and seals off the hole. From his expressions and reaction time, it's pretty clear this was a plan to trap the code the whole time. The code breaks the block and rejoins the fight. We have never seen a code break blocks before or since including in otherwise relentless attacks on eggs behind unprotected walls.

Like, dude, you got outplayed. Take the L. And no, I don't buy that it's just the code getting more powerful from training with Étoiles because, again, we haven't seen it break blocks since that one fight. This doesn't seem to have been an ability added to its bag of tricks.

Speaking of abilities which have been, I do think that giving it God apples in that fight was a fine play. Okay, it's getting stronger and it can buff itself now. Great! Genuinely! But again, it's only really getting stronger in the sense of Number Go Up.

How does Étoiles counter this new threat? Well, one day he's laughing hysterically at the idea of Tubbo using something as pathetically useless as a soul saber and the next day, he's got a soul saber of his own on his hotbar. Why? Because the soul saber's special ability is that it nullifies special effects. That's useless against 99% of mobs, but the hearts and regeneration given by the god apple are special effects that the sword can nullify.

Étoiles doesn't counter a new threat by buffing his stats or getting a stronger weapon. In fact, he gets a weaker weapon. He gets a weapon that he thinks is terrible and shitty and garbage, but that happens to give him what he needs for his specific use case. And that's enough to turn the code eating god apples from a seemingly insurmountable advantage into probably a mistake to even bother with.

Étoiles fights the codes with three weapons out. First, his broken sword, which does such absurd base damage that it's stupid to use anything else. Second, the soul saber which turns the Code's most obvious power move into a trap. Third, the nightmare scythe, which blinds enemies, leaving them disoriented and giving himself time to recover. He also has his grappling squowk for mobility, Enough healing potions (he prefers to have at least 1000), a lava bucket for chip damage, blocks for gaining distance and controlling enemy movement, a water bucket for controlling enemy movement and clearing cobwebs, and his xp backpack to keep all his gear repaired. This represents a massive amount of prepwork and theory crafting to put together and have ready and decide on what to have and how to use it. He also has to know his notoriously messy backpacks by heart to be able to navigate to his other potions fast enough to be able to use them in a fight, which is he is consistently able to do.

The Code has a healthbar that doesn't move, a single weapon that does too much damage for the repair upgrades to keep up with, and sometimes it can spawn a single cobweb now, which Étoiles already had a counterplay ready for.

Like, I get that Étoiles is the goat. I get that. I am not going into this discussion unaware of the fact that Étoiles is the goat. I am not expecting the admins to be able to play at his level and to be able to pull out all the tricks he pulls. In fact, it's fine and even good that the Code doesn't have the same tools and moves as a player.

But it still feels a little cheap to say that Étoiles isn't ready for the sword yet when he's outplaying them every single time it's even possible to make a play.

Oh before I forget to add it in, the cobweb is the One (1) trick the code has actually learned from Étoiles. It's a good trick, to be fair.

Anyway, the other big problem with Number Go Up escalation that we've reached a point where it's Literally Impossible to fight the Code without the Shield. Without the Shield, either the Code is gonna have to be randomly weaker for no reason, or it's gonna just gonna get to run around pretty much unchecked for a while. To be fair, the Code running around unchecked could fuck, except for the fact that there are counterplays available if it didn't three shot people in full armor.

The big problem with fighting the Code right now, aside from the whole three shotting people in full armor thing, is that it has that sword that makes you drop whatever you're holding.

Luckily, Étoiles and BBH both have their own separate, individual solutions. Étoiles never got the chance to test his out in a combat situation because he got the Shield before it came up, but BBH used his against Code Tilín during the new member code battle and it proved effective. Unfortunately for all of us, Étoiles still landed the final blow on that Code so I think a lot of people failed to realize just how powerful BBH's strategy is.

But since then, the Code's damage output has just simply gotten so ridiculous to be able to cope with how ridiculous the Shield is that all those interesting, exciting strategies get sidelined in favor of Number Go Up.

Since it was weekend, and you were spending time on your own, you decided to start drinking a bit earlier. Turning on a movie, you started sipping on your wine, exchanging some texts with your best friend every now and then.

Your first glass was done way too fast, and you were already sitting in front of your computer with your forth glass beside the keyboard, and a cigarette in your right hand, texting a code to Nejire as you puffed on your cigarette.

The moment you saw one familiar and one not so familiar usernames getting into the private lobby , you smiled widely once Nejire started laughing loudly.

You rolled your eyes in annoyance, once you saw all the people commenting START In the small chat box. There was something about it that was pissing you off, making you kick or ban anyone who writes it. This time, you were too busy laughing with your friend, and instead doing any of it, you simply started the game.

CREWMATE

You sighed in relief, taking a sip of your wine, as Nejire ran around you with her friend, singing loudly. Ignoring the two of them, you made your way to the Admin room, to swipe the card, not so surprised once you saw a crew of other players doing the same thing.

,,KENTUCKYCRIEDFRICKEN WHERE ARE YOU’’ you heard Nejire once she entered the room. Once she noticed the cyan color hiding in the crowd she hurried with her Pink character toward you.

,,Wanna watch me scan?’’ she asked, making you giggle as she just gave you the secret code, making sure you know that she’s the Impostor.

,,Nah, Imma pass’’ you said, getting out of the room. You were pretty sure she’ll win the game, since she had you and her friend on her damn side, but you did wish you could know who the other Impostor is. Ignoring her, you made your way toward the Weapons, to clear the damn Asteroids and just look for someone to play around with. These people were way too quiet for your taste.

,,Heyyyy what’s up man?’’ you almost screamed excitedly when you saw a dark blue character, hopefully a crewmate, standing there and clearing Asteroids, or you thought so. You forced your voice a pitch higher, giggling to yourself, knowing how stupid you sound.

,,Oh my god, how old are you?’’ the stranger asked. The moment you spoke, all the giggles were gone. That guys voice was so damn deep, you literally had to lit a cigarette before you decided to speak up again.

,,Old enough’’ you laughed, refusing to tell him your real age just now.

,,Older than 18?’’ he asked, as you were shooting those Asteroids, not that focused.

,, Of course’’ you gasped, rolling your eyes, like he might see you.

,, Thanks God.. Do you play Amongus often ?’’ he asked, not even knowing that his fucking voice was doing things to you.

,, Amongus is my favoire game’’ you said, finishing your task. The way he talked to you, you were almost sure that he was trying to troll you a bit there, probably thinking you are one of those uwu pick me girls.

Which at your surprise happened.

You were about to ask him some stupid question, but in that very moment someone found a fucking body.

,,Pink killed white and just jumped into the vent in front of me’’ some dude accused Nejire, and that’s when you knew that you have to jump in.

,, I saw Pink scan tho, so that makes you pretty sus dude’’ you lied without thinking twice. Yeah, you knew that it’s more fun if you play by the rules, and don’t team up.. but Nejire is rarely the Impostor and she’s always so damn excited when she wins.

,, Yeah, that’s Pretty sus… ‘’ your new friend said, probably believing you, since you two spent some short time together.

At the end of the short meeting, White was voted out.

You made your way to Reactor to do your task, and Nejire and her friend followed you, probably to look a bit clear to others. You hated the task you had to do, so you took your time, ignoring the loud laughs coming from your friend.

Shortly, the voice of Nejire was changed with the deep one.

,, So, what do you do usually?’’ he asked, as you tried to start the reactor. You had trouble with that task without being tipsy, so alcohol wasn’t really helping in your current situation.

,, I’m streets salesman of burgers’’ you joked, making him laugh a bit. Only to end up telling him that you are actually a student, having a mini job at the café near where you live. You weren’t even sure if his voice was making you speak up or the alcohol, but you almost found yourself telling him the story of your life.

,, Where are you going?’’ he asked you, as you made your way toward Electrical, stopping once the lights got off. You didn’t want to look sus to him, but you didn’t want to go there, since everyone knows that the first person that enters the room will end up dead.

,, Come on, I’ll keep you safe’’ he laughed, and you followed him. The moment you were about to do your task, the game finished, showing how the Impostors won.

You heart almost skipped a beat when you saw In the chat box how your dark blue feiend was the second Impostor. You found it extremely cute that he had way too many chances to kill you and he never did. Instead of killing you, he was simply chatting with you.

CREWMATE

Usually you were the one to hate playing as impostor, always feeling the pressure and thinking that you’ll ruin the game for the other impostor, but tipsy like that, you wished you could be one now, and kill some crewmates around.

,, Doll, teaming ain’t nice’’ deep voice told you as you were downloading the data in the Cafeteria.

,, Awh, come on, she needs a bit of support’’ you said, focused on his voice more than on your task. ,,After all you just used me to clear yourself and look less sus’’ you added and he sighed loudly, acting shocked that you could even think of him like that.

You thought that the little play with the stranger will be just one time ‘’experience’’, but at your surprise he asked you for your instagram at the end. Hopping out of your bed, you made your way to get ready for the day. There were many things you planned to do, so you didn’t really want to waste your time. The faster you’re done, the more time you’ll have at the end.

The moment you bought the game, you wished you could fucking teleport yourself home, but sadly, you still had stuff to do and the game had to wait.

Your steps felt heavy, as you pushed yourself in the crowd, trying to keep your balance. Someone’s shoulder almost knocked you out, making your blood boil in just a damn second. Turning your head to the side, more than ready to fight, a smile crept on your face once you realized who you’re facing.

The two of you finally parted ways, once you told her that you have some other important plans, deciding its better not to tell her that you’re dying to go home and play the game you bought.

You almost teared up once you were finally in your pajamas, laying comfortably on your couch and playing the game. You almost teared up, when you chose the retro function of the game, where you can get and loose life, thinking you’re the old school gamer. Oh, how fast you changed it once you realized how hard the game is.

After playing the game for two hours, you realized that you definitely won’t be able to finish it in one night. You were glad that the production was aiming for the old public, but you didn’t expect it to be that hard.

Your eyes widened when you saw what he wrote, too scared to open the message he sent you. Of course you wanted to meet him, but so fast ? And at this time ?

Was that really smart ?

Well, it doesn’t matter if it’s smart or not, you ended up sending him your address, last name and running around in the middle of the night and cleaning your apartment anyway. You found yourself smiling the whole time while hysterically cleaning around. You didn’t know if he is living near or far, yet there was so much to do. It was very visible that you weren’t expecting any guests.

Luckily for you, it took him some time to arrive, giving you a chance to clear everything nicely and throw your clothes that were laying around into the closet.

The moment you heard the doorbell you got nervous like a little teenage girl that was about to go on her first date and the moment you opened the door, you were more than sure that you made the right decision when you sent him your address.

Was is possible that someone could be that handsome ? At one point you thought that he was just photogenic when you scrolled his Insta feed, you thought maybe he knew his angles. But damn, the dude standing in front of you was someone you would spread your legs for without thinking twice.

,, You think? Thank you. You too’’ you said awkwardly. Usually you are much more confident, and you don’t have problem with communication, but the fact that this handsome dude you barely know, is in your apartment, made your legs shake.

,, I mean, you are really handsome’’ you added fast, trying to break that creepiness in your voice, giving yourself a mental facepalm once you realized that he was holding back his laugh. You almost looked like fucking Bella from Twilight. Was that necessary ?

,, What do you want to drink? Tea ? Coffee? Orange juice ? Wine ?’’ you asked, preparing the glass. He probably noticed how nervous you are and that made you even more nervous. Everything that could go wrong, is going wrong right now.

THANKS GOD. You weren’t sure if you would be able to survive being in the same room with him while drinking a fucking chamomile tea.

,, Are you dissing my gaming skills ?’’ you laughed, pouring the wine in the glass while he was playing the game like it was nothing.

,, Oh thanks God, you are a smoker, I was already stressing myself out if I’ll have to go out for every cigarette’’ Touya said once he saw you lit a cigarette.

After your second glass of wine, all the nervousness was gone. The two of you were having pretty much a fun time playing the game and drinking together.

,, What are you doing ???’’ he asked, almost screaming once you died in the game, without getting to the checkpoint.

,, MY BEST, I’M DOING MY BEST’’ You screamed back, throwing the controller to his direction, one again feeling defeated.

After that night, Touya started visiting you more often, and every night he would visit you, the two of you would drown a bottle of wine. You didn’t expect him to be such a cool person actually. In your opinion he did look like someone who’s full of himself.

Also, when you told Nejire that you met the dude from Among us, she immediately started lecturing you about how he could have killed you, totally ignoring the fact that you were standing in front of her alive and more healthy than you ever were.

,, Anyway, they have one appointment free today ‘’ Nejire said, as the two of you walked down the street, going to your usual café.

,, What are you talking about ?’’ you asked confused.

,, About escape room you stupid bitch’’ she said, hitting your arm lightly like she was talking about it clearly before.

,, Nejire, if the two of us go, one hour won’t be enough for us to get out of it’’ you pointed, knowing very well that neither of you is capable of figuring anything out on your own, especially not some scary ass escape room.

,, Ye, but I can ask Mirio to come, and you can ask the Dabi dude’’ she said, rising her eyebrows at you. Well that wasn’t a really bad idea actually.

Both Mirio and Dabi agreed, and while sipping on your coffee the two of you reserved the room. It was pretty much unplanned, and you had around 2 hours until your appointment, but you were really glad it worked out.

,, She met some boy at playground today. You should see the looks they were giving each other. They even started talking in their baby language, discussing something’’ she said, making you laugh as you imagined her baby sister hitting on some other kid. You were never a person that could deal with kids, but her sister was really special.

Once the Mirio arrived, Nejire got all quiet, which almost made you laugh out loud, since she’s nothing like that usually. She did tell you before, that the two of them hooked up after one of the birthday parties you attended, but you almost forget about that.

,, What can I get you?’’ the waiter asked Mirio, as you and Nejire talked excitedly about escaperoom.

,, One Matte Lacchiato’’ Mirio said, trying to follow what you were talking about, while the waiter was looking at him confused, not sure if he’s joking or not.

,, You mean Latte macchiato ??’’ Nejire asked, trying to hold her laugh. The moment the waiter left, none of you had to hold it back anymore.

Totempulse Idea Dump 2: Tango Abuses his Admin Rights

(Disclaimer: i have not watched tango and i do not know how in character this is. feel free to correct me if im wrong)

- timeline: post wall-flight, pre hcbbs.

- team zit hanging out at impulses base, doing some redstone. probably impulses latest farm.

- the subject of totemification is brought up. Tango then remembers hes an admin. He decides to look through impulses code to see how it works.

- code function tangent! Basically, totemification is controlled by one variable, which increments by a random amount each time a totem is used. This random amount gets added to by some number dependent on the total amount of totems used so far.

- this variable (totemEffect) is used to determine several others, including fireResist, damageResist, ageSlow, and totemSideEffect.

- there is a point where damageResist is 100%. At this point, nothing can activate more totems, since you resist all damage. However, this isnt the maximum value of totemEffect. This is because of the random increase.

- a safety net exists, which contains data for effects past the 100% mark. This exists to prevent overflow errors, as otherwise a totem could skip over the 100% mark entirely and glitch the player.

- this safety net, for some reason, contains higher ageSlow and totemSideEffect variables than what is normally obtainable.

- 100% point side effects: completely gold-looking skin/hair, solid emerald green eyes, golden wings capable of flight, a cloud of totem particles similar to an endermans particle cloud. you also become a few inches shorter. 100% immunity to all non-void damage, obviously. very slow aging.

- max value side effects: same as above, but more particles and you are tiny. same size as a totem. you also do not age at all.

- ok now back to the plot! Tango finds out all these things about the totemification code. While thinking about it, he accidentally types in the 100% mark, which overwrites the current totemification variable.

- tango then realizes "fuck, i typed that, didnt i. what did i do" *looks at impulse* *falls over laughing*

- impulse is very confused until he looks down and realizes hes gold. now hes like "oh no TANGO WHAT DID YOU DO"

- eventually, someone decides to see what the extra side effects are. tango goes back in impulses code and maxes out totemification. they get a tinypulse.

- he is probably a bit upset about this. how do you do redstone when you are tiny.

- however, this is the time xisuma happens to log back on. if they keep messing with the code they will be found out and they do not want to be found out.

- tango, a heavily totemificated zedaph (up to the point where he gets wings, he was experimenting with the totemification flight), and a very small impulse have to hide their crimes from a slightly suspicious xisuma.

- impulse also has to deal with being so fucking small. its hard to work on his farms at this size! at least he can fly.

how to custom color clothes (in vanilla!)

i recently became familiar with how to spawn completely custom colored fashion items in starbound and while it’s generally common knowledge by now and there are many guides out there on how to do this, i still wanted to write up a simple guide explaining the process of how i do it from the building blocks up + how to troubleshoot issues etc which should hopefully help some folks! a lot of my own friends didn’t know about /admin or /spawnitem so this will cover all the basics!

this is completely vanilla compatible as it is via the /spawnitem command, thus is NOT a mod, does NOT require save file editing, and is multiplayer friendly! you can also gift custom colored items between players and they will retain their colors, so you can make special colored clothing for friends if you want! i also explain how to do this without having to open up your game’s assets file

in order to do this, you will have to be comfy with using the /admin command in your chatbox. this will do several things such as making you invulnerable and making you able to spawn just about any item. you can turn it back off if you don’t want the effects to be permanent

introduction to /admin and /spawnitem

if you go into starbound and type /admin into your chatbox and hit enter, it will tell you something like “admin privileges now given to [playerName]” and grant you a ‘server admin’ status which will work in both single player, steam invite multiplayer, and in servers where the server owner allows players to do this (if you’re on a multiplayer server that doesn’t let you toggle /admin on you’ll have to talk it out with the server owner)

you will be granted immortality and access to some different fun commands like /timewarp and /spawnmonster, but the command we will be focusing on is /spawnitem which grants you the ability to spawn any item in the game (yes, ANY item. it’s so much power)

how to /spawnitem properly

/spawnitem works in a simple format:

/spawnitem [itemIDName] [number you want spawned]

so for example:

/spawnitem visorhead 1

will spawn a singular visor headpiece item! note that the item ID name there isn’t “visor” but rather “visorhead”-- while some items have IDs the same as the item’s name, many are named differently in the game files, and it’s that name in the game file that you need in order to spawn the item. luckily, you can easily find this by looking up any item on starbounder.org and scrolling to the bottom and looking where it says itemName

this is where we go deeper

so regular item spawning is all good and fun, you can collect all the hats in the world for free if you desired to plug itemNames into starbound for an hour straight, but on top of /spawnitem being a thing, starbound accepts additional commands tacked onto the end of the /spawnitem command which will alter the item further. these additional commands are known as “directives” and they primarily alter the item’s physical appearance

starbounder.org has a full list of every directive possible here but i will be covering the few i think are most useful for creating custom fashion items (ignore the part of the page that describes this as ‘modding’. it is NOT modding. it uses tools completely available to you in vanilla. it does not add mods to your game)

the basic format

/spawnitem itemName 1 ‘{”directives”:”?directiveYouwant=valuenumber”}’

to break it down: /spawnitem is the command you are telling the server to do. itemName is what the item you want is named within the game’s asset files. the number after the itemname is how many you want; leave it at 1 if you only want one but don’t delete it as you need at least a 1 to be there. the directives are in a set of apostrophes and curly brackets, directives is in quotes and it tells the game that you are using directives. then there’s a colon and after that, in another set of quotes, the name of the type of directive effect you want to use (like hueshift or brightness), and then = and basically a number representing how strong you want the effect to be

it’s really important to note that just like any other coding, you need to have complete symmetrical sets of brackets, apostrophes, and quotes. if your game tells you it can’t recognize your parameters or otherwise fails to spawn the item, make sure your words and numbers are in the correct brackets/quotes/etc and that the brackets/quotes/etc are symmetrical and in the right place and that you didn’t accidentally delete one or add an extra one in there

hueshift

/spawnitem visorhead 1 '{"directives":"?hueshift=180"}'

hueshift will change the ‘hue slider’ on your item relative to the number you plug into it, so for example hueshift=180 on a red item will turn it blue. you can use both negative and positive values like 45, -60, 90, 112, and so on! it will take some toying with

brightness

/spawnitem snowinfantrypants 1 '{"directives":"?brightness=-70"}'

also a ‘slider’, it’s very simple, it alters the brightness of your item. it accepts positive and negative values. so -70 will decrease the brightness by 70%. good for making already dark items darker! or already light items eyesearing if that’s your thing. you could do some neato pastel edits probably

saturation

/spawnitem visorhead 1 '{"directives":"?saturation=-100"}'

also what it says on the box, saturation increases or decreases the saturation of the item, and accepts both negative and positive values. -100 will completely desaturate the item and turn it black/grey/white for maximum emo effect. much higher values can turn you into a lisa frank nightmare

combining the above directives

if you want the darkest edgiest coat possible, or the most colorful pastel one imaginable, you can combine the brightness and saturation directives like so! (you can also add hueshift to this presumably, but i’ve neglected to in the premade code since it may look Weird to combine all these effects. if you want to add it in anyway just paste the ?hueshift=180 after the ‘100′ in the provided code, and make sure it’s within the quotation marks)

filters will only take you so far. we need to go deeper *matrix sfx*

there is an item directive much more complex than the others, known as the replace directive!

what this directive does is tells the game to look at the image file for the item, find the hex color codes on the left, and replace them with the new hex color codes that you listed on the right. this includes parts of the items that are not dyeable!

note that there are some slight limits to this: imagine each different color in an item’s image is a “slot” for a dye. you cannot add more slots, and when you specify a hex color to replace, it will always replace ALL pixels of that color. for example, you can change the visor item to have a red lens, but you cannot have a rainbow lens because there simply aren’t enough differently colored pixels to replace there in order to make it have a rainbow look! you CAN make different colors all turn into the same color, you simply cannot add more colors to an item than there are by default

(if you want to make an item one singular solid color, try using the setcolor directive which is much less complex than the replace directive)

how to use the replace directive - step 1: formatting basics

firstly, the basic formatting is such:

/spawnitem itemName 1 ‘{”directives”:”?replace;OLDHEX=NEWHEX;OLDHEX=NEWHEX”}’

the hex color code you want to replace is always on the left, and the one you want to replace it with/your custom color is always on the right. you can add and subtract as many custom colors from this string as you want, so you can replace only one color or replace allll the colors if you like!

if you want to replace multiple colors, separate the OLDHEX=NEWHEX bits by semicolons, with semicolons inbetween all of them but NOT at the end of the very last one you add (so the OLDHEX=NEWHEX bit at the very end of the code next to the “}’ part should Not have a semicolon at the end of it, but the others before it should. like this:

/spawnitem itemName 1 ‘{”directives”:”?replace;OLDHEX=NEWHEX;OLDHEX=NEWHEX;OLDHEX=NEWHEX;OLDHEX=NEWHEX;OLDHEX=NEWHEX ”}’

a replace directive code that replaces only one color should look like this:

/spawnitem itemName 1 ‘{”directives”:”?replace;OLDHEX=NEWHEX”}’

how to use the replace directive - step 2: actually creating your custom item

(note: you can skip the wiki image hunting step if you have access to the game assets and can open up the actual .png file used within the game’s files. this can save you some strife later. i don’t do this because pak files scare me so i’ll use some workarounds for this)

first what you want to do is have some kind of image editor program on hand that at minimum needs an eyedropper tool and a color selector that tells you the hex color code of the color you select. i use photoshop and in this tutorial i use the new layer and filler bucket features in my method since that makes it easier for me. if your image editing program doesn’t have a layers or fill bucket feature you might have to get creative

now what you wanna do is look up the item on the starbounder.org wiki, and obtain the image for it of it on a test dummy, and leave the tab open because you’ll need its itemName later to put it into the code

i’m going to use the copper goggles for this tutorial because they’re good looking but gee sure would be awesome if the lenses could change color!

whip open the image in your image editing program, duplicate the base mannequin image and make it a new layer above the basic one, and on the new layer go hogwild and use filler bucket or whatever to recolor the item to however you want, making sure you remember 1 color = 1 color and when you replace one color of pixel on the item, you replace all the pixels of that color

make sure to also ignore the mannequin underneath so you don’t get confused as to what pixel underneath is what (you can delete the mannequin’s pixels entirely if it helps)

i recolored the goggles to black and green as shown, with the gif on the left showing the difference between the base and the recolor!

time to CODE IT!

turning dreams into reality

you want to whip out your spawnitem code and begin the process of eyedropper-ing the hex color code of the color you want to replace, and then putting an = after it and then eyedropper-ing the color you wanna replace it with (from that recolored layer you made) and writing that down to the right of the equal sign

soooo for example:

when i use eyedropper tool, i can see the darkest brown color of the goggles is hex color code 6f2919! this means i know that my code will start out like this (remember to edit in the itemName):

/spawnitem copperarmorhead 1 ‘{”directives”:”?replace;6f2919 =HEXCOLORCODETOREPLACETHATBROWN”}’

and now i use my eyedropper tool to find the color on the recolored version that will be replacing those darkest brown pixels...

....which is 131313! so now i know that in order to spawn an item where the dark brown goggle color is replaced by dark grey, i have to make my code like this:

/spawnitem copperarmorhead 1 ‘{”directives”:”?replace;6f2919 =131313”}’

you will do this same process for the rest of the colors until every single hex color code you want to replace is listed out with its appropriate replacement!

note that since it uniformly applies the replacement, you only need to list out each color once-- you don’t need to list the replacements multiple times for each pixel or anything like that! ?replace; 6f2919 =131313 will automatically replace every dark brown pixel with dark black, you don’t need to go pixel by pixel or do  ?replace;6f2919 =131313;6f2919 =131313;6f2919 =131313 or whatever. 1 color = 1 color!

in the end, my code ends up looking like this in order to replace all of the colors in this item:

/spawnitem copperarmorhead 1 ‘{”directives”:”?replace;6f2919=131313;a85636=2c2c2c;e0975c=3c3c3c;d3113d=fcff00;f41725=78ff00”}’

now just a copypaste and an enter key... 

(NOTE: your custom item will spawn on your cursor. don’t spawn it underground or under your ship on accident. it will despawn eventually if not picked up but it’s still annoying if you spawn it ‘out of bounds’)

aaaand......

my item turned out perfectly!

if you got your item custom recolored to your specifications (NOTE: it may not be reflected in the items thumbnail but it will look fine in the actual item itself) you did it right and starbound didn’t fight you on it! congrats!

the game isn’t recognizing my code and my quotation marks are turning into squares??

some text editing programs do weird shit to quotes and apostrophes. including tumblr. try writing your spawnitem code in notepad instead or copypasting it into notepad and replacing all of the “ and ‘ whilst in there and that should do it (or just rewrite them within the game’s chatbox itself)

the game launched a HOMESTUCK REFERENCE at me instead?!

you typoed the itemName or used an otherwise incorrect itemName so the game gave you a generic filler item instead! check that your itemName is correct and matches the exact itemName on the wiki! remember that it is case sensitive

my item turned COMPLETELY INVISIBLE or the game yelled at me!!

whoops, congrats on accidentally making an invisible item even though there’s a much easier way to intentionally do that!

if either of these things happened to you, there’s likely an error within your code itself somewhere. double check that all the brackets, quotes, and apostrophes are symmetrical, in the right amounts, and that you didn’t stick an extra one in there or delete one on accident. make sure that the semicolons are between your oldhex=newhex bits but that there isn’t an extra semicolon on the last one before the final quotation mark. make sure you didn’t accidentally insert a space anywhere

oh god my item somehow changed colors (probably to a weird coppery brown) and only some bits got replaced!! why is it doing this, why is it changing colors help me!!

(note: i used the visor as an example here instead of the goggles because i had no issues with the goggles but did have problems with the visor before a kind soul on a starbound discord i’m in enlightened me as to why this issue happens. i will be talking about the visor but this troubleshooting process is applicable to any item that mysteriously gains new unreplaceable colors when you try to spawn a custom colored one)

this is gonna be the BANE of anyone not directly using the .png’s found in the asset files and using the wiki instead. don’t worry, it’s fixable, it’s just a pain in the butt and it will happen a lot. you will end up spawning a lot of items as ‘beta tests’ only to correct their colors again due to this issue

essentially, sometimes in starbound, the colors that an item has by default are not actually the colors that the .png file the game assets have. for example, here’s what the visor looks like by default when you equip one you found normally in a chest or whatever:

bbbuuuut that’s not actually what it’s file in the assets looks like. those coppery brown colors are the SECRET COLORS that exist underneath the grey. the file in the assets is what your game is going to look at to try to use for the custom colored item, and when it does that, instead of seeing the grey hex color codes from wiki, it will see the coppery brown hex color codes from the assets file. you told it to replace those grey colors you see, but the game doesn’t see any grey colors in this file! it only sees coppery brown ones! and you didn’t tell it to replace the coppery brown files with anything, so it’ll leave those intact and ignore the command to replace the grey colors that don’t actually exist on the item

what you want to do is grab a screencap of the Failed Beta Test item (NOTE: remember to turn off f.lux or sweetfx or any other program that will alter the color of your screencaps), and use the eyedropper tool to find out what the hex color codes of those ‘unreplaceable’ colors are:

when i was making this visor before, i THOUGHT that the hex color codes to replace for the grey bits were 373737, 7b7b7b7, and 6b6b6b. it turns out that the hex color codes for those bits in the game files are, in same order, 6f2919, a85636, and e0975c!

this means that if my code looked like this before, with errant hex color codes bolded:

/spawnitem visorhead 1 '{"directives":"?replace;6b6b6b=494949;7b7b7b=313131;373737=121212;008cd9=d90000;60b8ea=ff0000"}'

...it should be corrected to this instead, with the corrections bolded:

/spawnitem visorhead 1 '{"directives":"?replace;e0975c=494949;a85636=313131;6f2919=121212;008cd9=d90000;60b8ea=ff0000"}'

so instead of telling the game to correct hex colors that it doesn’t think exist on the item, you are now telling it to replace those pesky copper brown colors that it DOES think exist on the item and now can properly replace because you’ve given it the direction to

..aaaaand that should sort most things out!

coding this stuff can be FUSSY so there may still be errors and whatnot! i am not a coding expert but if you CANNOT get something to behave then feel free to shoot me an ask! happy recoloring!!!
