Neighbors to Watch: Nelson’s Green Brier Distillery
Tumblr media
Brothers Andy and Charlie Nelson set out on a journey to resurrect Nelson’s Green Brier Distillery, founded in the 1800s by their great-great-great grandfather, Charles Nelson.  Today, Belle Meade Bourbon has quickly become Nashvillians’ favorite Tennessee whiskey, a staple in many of our local speakeasies.  This July 4th, the brothers will present the return of Charles Nelson’s original whiskey with the release of “First 108.”  We set out to learn more about their unique story and get their favorite 4th of July cocktail recipe. TSGNASH: We love the heritage of the Nelson’s Green Brier Distillery.  Can you share more on this unique family legacy, and what made y’all decide to make the leap into running your own small business, particularly a business that had closed 100 years earlier during Prohibition? It wasn’t so much deciding whether or not to get the distillery started again, but more so the universe telling us this is what we are meant to do.  Eleven years ago, we were on our way to buy meat from a butcher who happened to live on a part of the land where our family’s original distillery was located.  When we discovered the land, and the history behind the company, we fell in love - and have been working on resurrecting the company ever since.

(Photo credit Leslee Mitchell @lesleemitchell) TSGNASH: Tell us what it’s been like running a distillery in the heart of Nashville. Nashville is an amazing city.  It has such an incredibly creative and supportive community that gives us an energy that couldn’t possibly come from any other city.  Nashville’s unique history with its recent growth and popularity make for a perfect fit with our company, in terms of honoring the past and embracing the future.  Nelson’s spirit goes hand-in-hand with the spirit of Nashville. TSGNASH: What makes Belle Meade Bourbon so unique? The history of this brand is unparalleled, and there’s really no debating that!  Belle Meade Bourbon is a high-rye content bourbon that’s about as versatile as you can get in terms of whiskey.  We also have three special cask finished versions, (Sherry, Cognac, and Madeira) that are unique within themselves.  They’re worth checking out and finding a spot on your bar cart, in our humble opinion!

TSGNASH: We’re sure y’all have seen your Belle Meade Bourbon used in cocktails at various local spots, any favorites? New spots open up in Nashville almost every day, it’s hard to keep up with the incredible growth!  We support anyone who carries our products and encourage everyone to keep an eye out for Belle Meade Bourbon at their favorite watering holes.  It tastes especially good in an Old Fashioned or a Manhattan. TSGNASH: We are so excited for the return of your great-great-great grandfather’s original Tennessee whiskey.  Please tell us more about First 108 and how it feels to bring it back? Nelson’s First 108 Tennessee Whiskey is our initial release of the whiskey from Charles Nelson’s original recipe.  The whiskey itself is at least two years-old and has been aged in 30 gallon barrels, which are slightly smaller than industry standard.  We have 108 barrels, and we’re releasing it exactly 108 years after Prohibition shut the company down.  This is a special commemorative release that will only be available to purchase at the distillery.  Once these bottles are gone, they are gone forever, but it won’t be too long before the full, 4-year aged Nelson’s Green Brier Tennessee Whiskey is available.
Tumblr media
(Photo credit Nelson’s Green Brier Distillery) TSGNASH: Scout Guide is all about living local, and we have a few short questions about your Nashville go-tos: TSGNASH: Favorite place to grab a drink? Andy: Urban Cowboy Public House Charlie: Skull’s Rainbow Room TSGNASH: Favorite restaurant? Andy: Baja Burrito Charlie: Kien Gang TSGNASH: How would each of you spend a typical summer day in Nashville? In all likelihood we would both be at the distillery working, but we love to get outdoors when we’re able to take a weekend off.  Any time we can spend out on the water is always a treat, and we also like to enjoy the amazing day hikes around Middle Tennessee.  The Fiery Gizzard Trail is one of our personal favorites.  And of course, there’s no shortage of live music here, so we’re both big fans of getting out to any live show we can see. TSGNASH: What would you recommend to a visitor on how to spend a summer day in our city? Come tour the distillery!  The Nashville Sounds baseball games are always hard to beat, and the Band Box will never disappoint, especially when a guest chef is cooking up some treats.  And you have’t been to Nashville if you don’t finish off the night with some live music downtown. TSGNASH: Finally, we have to ask for your favorite Belle Meade Bourbon cocktail recipe for outdoor 4th of July gatherings, can you share one you recommend? We prefer our bourbon neat, but for something refreshing on a hot summer day, try a Tennessee Stud, (Belle Meade Bourbon, ginger beer and lime) or an Arnold Palmer with a little Belle Meade Bourbon mixed in.  You really can’t go wrong!

#WhiskeyWednesday with #BooneCounty #1833. I have been waiting quite awhile to try this one. Here's the good. It's a 10yr #MGP low #Rye mash at 21%. It's an easy sipper. There is no need to add water because it is very mild mannered. There is some confectionary sweetness right up front. It has a touch of cotton candy and some sweet oak. The finish is all vanilla, and caramel. The bad news, this whisky has no backbone. It has a nice flavor and tastes from the same vein as #BelleMeade #SingleBarrel but with all the personality stripped away. At 90.8 it's guttless. It's not a bad whiskey but they need to go ahead and crank it up to at least 100 proof. I didn't hate it, but so glad that I got to #TryIt before I #BuyIt. At 65$ this is a #LeaveItOnTheShelf. You just are not getting a great value. @tnwhiskeyco Belle Meade, and @smoothambler are better out of the wrapper, better in a glass or cocktail, and better for your wallet. Rating: 81/100 #LeaveItOnTheShelf #BourbonResearch #BourbonBrotherhood #Instawhisky #Bourbon #SingleBarrel #BarrelProof #KentuckyStraightBourbonWhiskey @jonnysimpmia @bourbonsippers @axisofwhisky @dmartgpro @barrelsanddrams @socaldiver33 @whiskyanorach @bourbonr @eric.parks.1313 @whiskey_library_dc @single_malt_slacker

Father’s Day Favorites
Tumblr media
At TSG Nashville, we have loved seeing all of the local pride for our favorite hockey team.  So this year, we scouted some local Father’s Day finds sporting our favorite summer colors: navy and gold.
1- Haymakers & Co.
Haymakers & Co. is your go-to shop for men’s contemporary, authentic, and local clothing. Located at West End Ave. & Acklen Park, this shop is equipped with everything from a custom clothing bar, to a full service barber shop.  We love these Res Ipsa shoes in Predator blue, a perfect summer pair for Dad!
2- Project 615
A philanthropic apparel company benefiting the city of Nashville and beyond, we think Project 615 wins for most creative t-shirt designs when it comes to their Nashville Predators fan gear.  Be it catfish, beards, or lyrics sung by Tim McGraw, we are absolutely loving each design, and we think Dad will too.
3- Onward Reserve
Recently opened in Nashville’s Hillsboro Village, Onward Reserve is a men’s lifestyle shop focused on quality with an up-to-date conservative style.  We love a good bow-tie on Dad, especially when it comes in our new favorite summer colors: navy and gold.
4- Project 615
Nothing says Nashville like the numbers 6, 1, and 5.  We love this hat, perfect for game days, or just for when Dad wants to show his local love.
5- Alton Lane
Located in Edgehill, Alton Lane takes custom fit to a whole new level.  With their 3D body scanner to intricately take Dad’s measurements, this custom shirt will fit him perfectly. Book him an appointment today, Dad definitely will not be disappointed!
6,7- Predators Pro Shop
The Predators Pro Shop has got it all!  We think Dad will like a new tumbler for his morning coffee to show his love for Smashville.  Or for those outdoor games, a new cornhole set featuring a Nashville Predators hockey rink image, is a win for Dad.  We love our Preds!!!
8- Trip to Nelson’s Greenbrier Distillery for a Belle Meade Bourbon Tasting
For Dads who love their bourbon, a trip to Nelson’s Greenbriar Distillery is the perfect outing!  A whiskey aged to perfection, Belle Meade Bourbon was brought back after more than 100 years by brothers Charlie and Andie Nelson.  Book your tour for Dad today!
