Even knowing it’s all fake, I still feel so bad for Amanda at the beginning of Season 2. She plays it so well.

I have been thinking about this idea more recently and am inclined to agree.
The pressure that seemed to come with being part of elite seemed to be more than you might see at first glance. Their routines have to be perfect, every one of them has to win first otherwise it isn't good and they're not improving.
Were shown elite through multiple different lenses, but each seem to point to similar conclusions.
Amanda, as you have explained was most likely there for her entire dance career, and that pressure and scheming had to have had an effect on her.
Daniel, was only there for a short time but he used what he recorded to help TNS. What he recorded shows that elite want to mess with TNS whenever possible. That seems to be their end goal.
We're also shown this through Shantel, when she joins A Trope for a couple episodes. She can't shake the way elite did things. The whole, "nothing is shown till it's perfect" thing with her duet with Giselle. The ways of elite get ingrained and it takes time to shake it.
Cierra, Max and the rest of elite that joined during the S3 merge had different takes on the merge and whatnot but the main part is how long it took Max and Cierra to talk to the others. The two were taught to be against The Next Step, now they're part of their team and they don't know what to do.
Not totally relevant but, the way Kate treated Amanda in S3 and S4 was awful. I get she was from a rival team, but that doesn't mean she gets shipped off to Switzerland (nothing against the country but). She didn't even give her a choice. Amanda went from Dance Captain to Alternate within a month. Imagine what that must have been like. Then, Amanda tries to go on tour with Giselle, which, always seemed to be the whole point. To go dance professionally, which is what she would have been doing. Amanda missed the audition and Kate wouldn't let her audition even though there were auditions in the afternoon she could have gone to. Then, to top it off, she strongly advised Riley not to choose Amanda as her replacement. Kate had it out for her. Amanda had changed and some didn't seem to see that. It annoys me to no end.
amanda was emotionally manipulated by elite
*deep breath* here we fucking go back at it overanalysing a childrens show because It Could Be That Deep and in this situation It Most Likely Was
we can assume that amanda has been with elite for most (if not all) of her dance career, its been stated that she’s attended regionals with her team at least three times. from what we’ve seen from elite in their first apperances, theyre cold, theyre focused on winning, they scheme and wont let anyone get in their way. this is what emily learns about elite from her short period there.
amanda works very closely with lucien, who mustve been the one to plant the ideas in her head and the heads of every elite member that they must be the best and they won’t stop at anything to achieve that. this is how amanda was brought up in a dance environment, so she must believe that all studios are this intense and not afraid to bend the rules. what adds to this is that lucien praises her whenever she follows through with one of his plans, and everyone enjoys praise.
we as viewers don’t see this as a problem, because we all assume that thats just what everyone at elite is like, they all want to win and dont care about how far they must go to do that.
this all changes when we explore amandas character in season 2, when she takes a spot in the next step’s roster just to tear it down from the inside. but tns is a huge change to what elite is like, its much less strict, everyone is having fun and enjoying what they do, most of them are good friends with each other too. of course, tns wants to win their competitions, but above all of that, they just all genuienly want to dance and improve. amanda hasn’t experienced a lot of this openness in a studio, but tries her best to fit in and make friends. i hold a strong belief that a lot of the times where amanda is shown to be having fun with tns, shes actually having that fun and not putting it on for the facade.
if amanda hadn’t been at elite for the long amount of time she had, its very likely she wouldn’t have continued lucien’s plan. but because she’s taken part in schemes of his for so long, she sees every end goal to be the victory of elite and goes through with the plan until she’s found out.
next we see of her is at nationals, where she very obviously has a different outlook towards tns. we can contrast this to last years regionals, where amanda goes out of her way to insult tns. this time she actively asks tess to stop being a nuisance towards emily, west and giselle. remarking “we don’t need to mess with the next step all the time”, this isnt huge, but its definately a step from what she was like at regionals.
next notable instance of her change is when tess is sent to stop michelle from getting back in time for her solo. amanda is furious that lucien would send her to do such a thing, she believes that in dance it should be a fair fight, but then she questions if lucien and tess even believe in her ability to win. lucien quickly brushes this off with a half-hearted sounding “of course we believe in you”
she makes a point of telling michelle that she had nothing to do with tess trying to keep her from performing. while the results are being called she says “concidering i lost last year, who knows what my team will do if i lose this year” this could imply that she’s scared of the dissapointment from her team, as she probably experienced last year. when michelle wins, amanda tells her “sorry, for everything”, she feels genuienly bad about what she put the next step through. which is probably one of the first times she’s understood how awful elite’s plans can be. she’s dissapointed in her self for not winning, of course, but smiles when she walks past tns celebrating, implying that she’s happy michelle won in her place.
emily hurts her knee during the semi-finals dance, and amanda is concerned and sad for her. her and tess watch emily try and walk around the stage and amanda tells tess “i can’t believe this happened to her. she doesn’t deserve it. the team doesn’t deserve it” her tone of voice is very teary. tess responds with “yeah, they do” and personally, this is a line that really drives home my opening statement that amanda is being emotionally manipulated. tess is telling her that the next step do deserve to lose, even when they’ve done nothing wrong, because in elite’s eyes the only team deserving of a win is themselves. amanda has been manipulated into thinking that too.
amanda places third in the female soloist category, which she’s personally proud of because she wasn’t even in the top three last year. unfortunately elite don’t even give her the time of day for her achievement. lucien remarks sarcastically, “good going, you really did it. great.” amanda feels like she’s improving, but no one in her studio is even proud of her. she knows this isn’t a normal reaction, because tns members are happy for their teammates no matter how they place, and amanda longs for that kind of closeness.
the most important quote in here is what amanda says when she chooses to dance in place of emily in the finals. “i don’t know why i wanna dance with the next step. part of me thinks its just because i wanna get back at lucien, or i’ve actually grown to like them, or maybe i just wanna be on a winning team.” shes confused in her own feelings. she doesn’t understand what’s pushing her to finally break from elite. at this point she knows that elite aren’t treating her right, which is shown by her first statement, but with her third statement, shes only ever understood lucien’s plan for personal gain, so she thinks she’s trying to replicate it by doing what she can to get her name on the winning team.
tl;dr - that entire quote of her second guessing herself is the last piece of the puzzle, amanda has been emotionally manipulated into thinking that everything is for elite and lucien’s gain. she thought this was standard for the environments of all dance studios until she spent time at the next step and learnt how to actually have fun in her dance career. she wholeheartedly deserves a second chance from the next step, as her motives were corrupted by elite’s plans the first time she stayed with them. amanda now understands she needs to distance herself from elite and find a new love for dance and friendship at the next step

tennessee williams essay fuck yeah fuck yeah fuck yeah
im trying to pull together some ideas about, like ... TW naming himself after the state of tennessee (and having almost named himself after an early TN pioneer settler from whom he was descended) figures his autobiographical work (which is to say: almost all of it) as a site wherein the settled land and the individual settler are merging, the disciplining of bodies and desires as the disciplining of the land -> texts like menagerie and streetcar are ways of grappling with the history of the antebellum south (not always successfully, imo) through this vector of Desire, blanche and amanda as hauntings -> peripheral desires (tom wingfield's cruising, tom's desire for jim, blanche's promiscuity, allan and the man he slept with, brick and skipper, those gayboys who owned the land big daddy took over) as threatening something about the southern settler project (this is mostly in cat but i think reverberates throughout). it's a mess rn but getting there!

TNS Marching Band AU
So last year I thought about writing a college marching band AU but I didn't get beyond sorting every A-Trouper into sections. Pre-Season 7 my brothers helped because those are the seasons I can watch on the TV, and my brothers are band kids through and through. New characters for seasons 7-9 are probably less accurate since I was assigning them on my own.
Section leaders above the cut, rest of the sections below.
Michelle-head of music (clarinet) Emily-head of marching (flute) Noah-drum major (bass clarinet)
Thalia-clarinet Kenzie-flute Piper-alto sax West-tenor sax (+bass clarinets) Daniel-trumpet James-percussion (quads/tenor) Riley-trombone (+baritones) Eldon-tuba (+horns)
Clarinets Chloe Cassie Skylar Ozzy Heather Heath Daisy Dylan
Flutes Stephanie Tiffany Jacquie Lola Kingston (hangs out with the saxes) Ethan Niall Olive
Alto Saxes Cierra Henry Zara Summer Izzy
Tenor Saxes and Bass Clarinets Giselle-tenor sax Davis-tenor sax Jett-tenor sax Anthony-bass clarinet Adele-bass clarinet
Trumpets Alfie Richelle Elliot Lily Cleo Presley (yes, I know she was never officially on A-Troupe, work with me) Ebby Grace
Percussion Luke-snare Theo-bass John-snare
Trombones and Baritones Hunter-trombone Sloane-trombone Finn-trombone Jude-trombone Ariana-trombone Amanda-baritone Ella-baritone Josh-baritone
Tubas and Horns LaTroy-tuba Amy-horn Pete-horn Xander-horn
