there was nothing in this world that you hated more than getting your period.

you expected it, knew the reason you had been feeling shitty all week was because literal hell was creeping up on you.

at least now you had a reason to tell spencer as to why you had cried when he showed you a tiktok of two cats cuddling and said “us”.

but you weren’t happy at all, you never were around this time of the month.

what does help though, is having the sweetest boyfriend who is ready to drop everything to help you through it.

you were sure he was probably a little suspicious himself about when your period was next due.

luckily it fell on a friday, so you could just relax the first couple of days. which usually, you found were the most painful.

you had just finished showering when you heard spencer come home. you heard him leave his shoes and bags at the front door, slowly making his way through your apartment. “honey, you home?”

you called back weakly, letting him know you were in the bathroom. he knocked on the already open door, asking if it was okay for him to come in.

you agreed and his head appeared through the crack. his smile dropped slightly as he took in your red puffy eyes, which he could only assume was from you crying.

“is everything okay?” he asked as he quickly came closer to you, his arms reaching out to pull you into his chest.

you nodded glumly, “i got my period.”

“oh baby,” he cooed, his hand moving to stroke your wet hair. “not feeling too good?”

your shook your head.

“i think i know something that will cheer you up.” he pressed a kiss to your head, taking step back to look at you. “why don’t you get yourself comfortable then come meet me in the lounge?”

you nodded and he placed another kiss on your head.

he made his way to the door but stopped just before leaving, a cheeky smile on his face. “hey, at least we know your new birth control works.”

you knew he was trying to make light of the situation but you couldn’t stop yourself from throwing your face towel towards him. which, was obviously unsuccessful as he managed to dodge it. you shook your head at him, a smile on your face nonetheless, and he blew a kiss in your direction before closing the door.

by the time you had gotten changed into something comfy and came to the lounge room, spencer had managed to set everything up. he knew before he left for work this morning that he wanted to do something nice for you and he couldn’t have planned a better day.

you froze upon seeing the lounge. there he was laid on the sofa, waiting patiently for you to finish with a comforting smile.

your favourite food and snacks were laid out on the coffee table and the tv was ready to play your favourite movie.

god, this man was a dream.

“come here, baby.” he patted in between his legs, ushering you over. you couldn’t have moved faster. you laid in between his legs, your back pressed against his chest.

“spence, this is so sweet.” you pouted, looking up at him as he pressed play on your movie.

he pressed a kiss to your cheek, his arms wrapping around you in a hug. “anything for m’lady.”

his hands made their way to your stomach, massaging gently. “now relax and let me take care of you.”

and he definitely refuses to let you lift a muscle for the rest of the night. which is no problem for him, he loves to look after you.

Today I'm thinking about what I consider to be my "epic ya lit misunderstandings", which are a series of misconceptions I formed in my head when I was just starting to read ya books and saw a lot of posts on socials about series like Shadowhunters, Percy Jackson, The Grisha Trilogy, etc... before I had actually read the series and had any context. My favourites are:

I somehow mixed up Magnus Bane (Shadowhunters), Magnus Chase (Percy Jackson Universe) and Frank Zhang (also PJU) and thought this "Magnus" was an asian demigod who was a know it all and who became Percy's rival (yes, this one is kind of problematic for a series of reasons but forgive me, I was 14 and I didn't know any better)

For some reason I imagined that all the Shadowhunters' scenes I read were set in a cave (no idea why)

After I knew who Magnus Bane actually was but before I got that far in TMI, I thought Sebastian was a gay shadowhunter that got into a love triangle with Magnus and Alec (which... which was actually kind of a foreshadowing since in the Malec trilogy the real Sebastian's cousin (Leon?) does flirt with Alec...)

I read that in The Grisha Trilogy there was a lesbian couple and I was convinced that it was Zoya and Genya. I read Six of Crows first and their small cameo in the second book convinced me even more of this.

And my personal favourite:

I thought The Raven Boys was a "spy school" kind of story where Aglionby was a school that trained its students to become secret agents who dealt with paranormal cases and Ronan (this was due to someone posting that in TRC TV show Ronan should be played by Stiefvater herself with a fake beard) was the head principal-like figure who was like "Raven Boys, I have a new mission for you"

For convenience's sake, I decided I try screenshots from the recent graphic novel artstyle demonstrated by the 3rd pic I posted (as said graphic novel series is still ongoing) and put voice clips from both the film and tv show over it. Like imagining a manga brought to life by an anime, I want to see if people find the voices from the film more fitting or the show one if said images were animated.

I sampled the scenes of Clary & Jace's first meeting and talk before their first kiss for both series of examples.

Sexuality/pronouns: I go by She/Her (cis), I’m bisexual and on the grayace spectrum, but definitely open to sex. My preference leans towards men, but masc woman rev me up as well lol.

Appearance: I’m 5’2”, 101Ibs, slender, somewhat androgynous build with little curves. I have curly short brown hair, falling a little past my ears. My face is soft and rounded with a sharp-ish jaw line. I would say I'm average but I'm called pretty. My eyes are down turned and blue. My style changes on a whim but mostly I rotate between grunge and an earthy hippie witch style (?) imagine white flowing dresses, earth tones, and pendents lol. Will sometimes wear a binder with more masc outfits, it just gives me joy. Makeup is usually very little day to day, sometimes going for a heavy eyeliner look. I’ve got a good amount of piercings, 3 on each ear, 1 nostril ring, a septum piercing, a vertical labret, and nipple piercings soon to come haha.

Personality: I’m can be very anxious and avoidant when meeting new people but once I’m comfortable I’m a such silly freak weirdo lmao. I overthink a lot due to anxiety. I’ve got a decent vocabulary and enjoy have long existential talks every once in a while. I looove parallel play and should probably mention I have ADHD. Conflicts can be hard for me and I usually go out of my way to avoid them, so I can appear as a pushover- but If I’m pissed I make it known. I love art and I’m decently skilled in it, having been drawing my entire life. I would say my love languages are touch and gift giving, I’ll straight up roll on bitches I love loll, and they’ll be getting so many drawings from me. I love horror movies, trying new foods, coffee, teas, animals, any outdoor activities, the Summer, cuddling, art, talking about special interests, and music (listen to a lot of different stuff- 90’s and 70’s rock, phonk, metal, pop, classical.)

Hobbies: drawing, painting, swimming, hiking, reading, yoga, gaming, watching TV shows, trying new things, listening to music, occasionally smoking pot with friends. Sorry if this was TMI!!  OK I think that he would love you and your kind of short stature and more androgynous look. I think you would think that your grunge style is extremely cool and I think that all of that would just kind of attract him to you. I mean, we all know that twitch in the movies is kind of more less feminine kind of more androgynous energy. I get from her and she is significantly shorter than him. I feel like that’s kind of, something he would be into so I feel like he would be attracted to you and that aspect and then your personality. I think you would find very endearing and I feel like he’s really anxious when he meets new people too. I mean a lot of people don’t realize I think that he just has a lot of anxiety and especially because he knows he would want to make you feel as welcome as possible because he really is like that with people he cares about. I think he would also find your piercings so cool. (And hot) you guys also are both very conflict avoiding so that’s another thing that I think would work out kind of well for you as long as you kind of acknowledge it when it comes I feel like you guys would have very few conflict in your relationship fighting wise because he’s generally a very agreeable person. I could also totally see you guys. Going on cute dates together and it’s Canon that there’s a small little lake by the Sawyer house so I feel like he would sometimes take you there on a very secluded day or something like that and also he would love if you painted him like a few, painted him at all or something like a flower, he liked or anything like that and gave it to him as a present it would be his new prize possession like he would carry everywhere he would just be so in love with it or if you painted on his mask. hi! i need to get something off my chest, like in shadowhunter world both tv and books, books is my favourite not because i hate tv characters (bc teh emotional vulnerability was very well done there- i literally it was so hard to wait for my school to get over so i could watch the show) but bc books is the original stuff which i fell in love with for teh first time, also why though all teh series are really good in shadow world but tmi holds a special place in my heart (no matter how imperfect it is in certain places) which i think also translates into my love for book!malec more than show!malec. (the height difference bugs me so much in show bc its not the right one, alec loves being shorter than magnus, but i love matt sorry harry but matt is yeeahhh...) idk why i have never been able to attach myself to show malec fics as much to book!malec fics. I think the only long show!malec fic i read was yours that you made about detective alec and lawyer magnus, but that was bc i love your writing and stories (i love the book!malec and mavid ones more sorry !! but i cant david is an original character but i love him so much, sry got sidetracked) tbh i also felt that the next malec fic would be show malec bc i cant (even tho i have read the lmlt i think it was named.. one of teh first long fics you wrote which had asmodeus and alec relation) imagine book alec having a relationship with asmodeus which is even remotely decent. but show malec have always been more softer and more communicative about their vulnerabilities. (which makes me realize now, i also love the intensity of book!malec more, huh)

No, I think this is fair. You're allowed to have a preference. I like book malec better too - simply because there is more to their characters and I usually prefer book versions anyway.

Regarding the fic, first things first, you can imagine them however you want! I know for a fact not everyone who read TLND imagined Alec as Sebastian Stan (I will stand by this casting!!). But it's how I, as the writer, imagined it. My castings are simply for me - to be very honest. I pick faces and people who help me visualize my characters better. But that does not mean you have to do it too. I'm sure people on ao3 who read my fics but don't follow me tumblr have no idea about any of these castings. So, yeah. You can imagine them however you want.

I also want to note, since I got another ask about this as well, that the casting I choose doesn't really affect the personality and behavior of the characters. It's the other way around really. Sure in the show Alec doesn't have blue eyes and Magnus is shorter, but those (among a few other differences) are completely irrelevant to this fic. If someone is put off by Magnus being shorter (in my fic, I mean) then that's their problem. It's such a mundane detail (for me) and I'm not going to be mentioning the colour of their eyes and their height every five seconds. This fic is rather different so I doubt it'd be mentioned at all (considering it's alec pov too - if you notice he is the kind of character where i don't write a lot of descriptions for the people he interacts with because Alec doesn't care about that a lot)

But yeah. It really shouldn't matter. At least I hope not <3

anyway. re: timeless video. i didn’t want to add any of heartstopper season 2 because well i thought i would finish before it even came out and then i didn’t so now i’m like. well can i replace one of the three heartstopper scenes i have in there for one from season 2. can i easily find the scene i want on youtube is the better question. i’m not doing anything crazy to get this it’s not that deep to me. at the end of the day if anyone else in planet earth compared kit and ty to heartstopper i would rip their spine out with my teeth so like it’s not as if nick and charlie are essential pieces to the fabric of the video. EYE am allowed to make that comparison i have the authority. no one else does and frankly i’m very glad that booktok fandom people don’t care about cassie. do you know how freeing it is that no one gives a shit about cassie anymore in the wider culture except those of us that are already here? it’s so nice. if i had to deal with tda being adapted into a movie or tv show i’d kill myself. thankfully tmi took all those bullets for us and flopped not once but twice so now we never have to do it again! it’s so peaceful. i couldn’t imagine having to deal with my favorite series from middle/high school being adapted into anything at my age i was right on the cusp of it when shadowhunters was airing and now i’m too old to deal with that. cannot imagine being a percy jackson fan right now. not to say i feel bad for them they chose to align themselves with cringe i don’t care what becomes of them. what the fuck was this post about. oh yeah i wanna put a heartstopper season 2 scene in the timeless video. we’ll see if that works out. if not. i don’t care

Lavender. I love it so much. Nearly everything in my room smells like it too. My sister got me a lavender diffuser and I had it on all day. A fictional universe you would love to be in...

Easily the Sweet Tooth universe. If you havent watched it, (you really should... it's on Netflix) this deer-human hybrid kid (gus/sweet tooth) wants to find his mother. A big guy called big man/jeppard takes gus to red rock Colorado. BUT GUESS WHAT? (chicken bu-) there is a VERY lethal disease that they call the sick. SO its basically post-apocalyptic type world.

Also Bubble too. It's an anime movie where Tokyo was encapsulated by a bubble.

Both Sweet Tooth and Bubble are amazing. 10/10. They are on Netflix if anyone is interested~

wow that's a lot of hate, but that's your opinion and it's fine😭 i mean obviously it's not the best shadowhunters series(because of that specific part of the plot that everyone hates mostly), but personally i enjoyed the writing, especially for a debut series. CCs writing style is one of my favorites.

And also Alec didn't really have a personality of his own until he met Magnus, let's be real now. He was considered Jace's shadow and he admired Jace a lot, which naturally made him think about what he would do or think about certain things. Magnus himself notices it and says Alec is like silver and Jace is like gold. Most people go for gold, so silver is not considered as special. That's how it starts, anyway.

I also found the demon thing hard to imagine because in my head Alec is exactly like the one in the tv show for tmi. But all in all he's had a huge improvement, been through enough to become stronger emotionally and physically, with many qualities. There's a reason people chose him as the new consul :)

alec and clary's friendship has truly come a long way considering that it started by alec insisting a demon committed suicide just to deny the fact that clary killed it

i know we’ve moved past the show but does anyone else think milly alcock looked soooooo young, disturbingly so, as young rhaenyra? even now when i see her in gifs i’m still shocked at how young she looks even next to emily carey. i know that’s the Point and why she was cast and styled accordingly but it made the show hard to watch at times, like episode 4, which i don’t know if it was meant to be as disturbing as it was or not. maybe they did frame it like that and it’s just the fandom not seeing it (more on that below).

again, that was the point of that casting but imagine my shock when i logged on to tumblr after watching that episode and saw everyone cheering for daemon/rhaenyra and proud of it like there was nothing wrong..... i’m sorry but does she not look like an actual teenager to you, that perhaps being deliberate? (she was even dressed/disguised as a young boy in universe). do you not realize what’s happening in this scene? to the extent that the writers need to explain it in interviews over and over? it really shocked me, i’m not even joking or exaggerating.

maybe its just me but in any case it was probably my worst and most bewildering fandom experience ever and it didn’t help my anxious mood at the time (i believed i even mentioned this on discord to my friends there who btw were so cool and understanding). i’ve never experienced such a thing before with online things, and with a thing i liked and which is related to some of my favourite books too! anyway i just unfollowed people and was done with it; no point in hurting yourself.

i think i’d be able to rewatch that episode (i’m fine with discussing it, the characters and their relationship and the whole story, it’s no problem), because ultimately i rationally recognize it was not the show's problem but the fandom’s, but that brothel scene quickly became so viscerally disturbing to me.... but once again i totally recognize that that’s on me and not on the show (while maybe being part of its intention).

i also don’t want to blame the fandom in general because fandoms will fandom (after all we’ve been here before with so many ships) but this..... this was different, i think also because it’s a completely different “ship” than usual. it’s not exactly edward/bella or reylo and i don’t think i need to explain why. its something much more serious than that; at least i’d like to believe that we live in a world where a dramatic familial sexual abuse storyline on prestige tv warrants an equally serious reception (though considering what i often see on letterboxd i should probably not be so hopeful). after all this is ASOIAF/GOT, isn’t it? frequently hailed and acclaimed for its mature realism? and to see everyone treat it like a joke/meme or a romantic thing really turned my stomach. to this day it does

coupled with other things i’ve seen on here from fans about other aspects of the show (and of the books as well as GOT), i can say that this is probably the worst fandom i’ve personally seen in a while, it’s just one horrible thing after another (including misogyny, fascist rethoric, you name it). if i can use a comparison, it’s like being an offline person looking up what the folks on the internet are saying about something you like - not an experience that’s often recommended and for good reason. that's what i experienced that day

(A/N): Hi, everyone! So, I recently got a new kitten, she’s 6 weeks old, and she is the sweetest thing ever! I got her so young because, unfortunately, her mother refused to nurse and take care of her and her siblings, but oh well; just gives me the privilege to nurture and love her more! She LOVES to cuddle and explore. I have really decided on a name yet; I thought I wanted to name her Panga, but I don’t know. I’ve been calling her critter and creature, more than her actual name, as terms of endearment. Anyways, the fresh bond between my lovely little creature and I, got me thinking about Evangeline and her little critter, Aleister. -xoxoxo

As Evie swam to the surface of consciousness, she could feel the familiar weight of her feline Aleister’s fairly large and heavy body lounge atop of her for their sacred afternoon nap.

 She heard two voices on the other side of her and Alec bedroom door, and she open her eyes just in time to see someone slip through the door. Her blurry eyes adjust quickly enough to see it was indeed Alec walking towards their shared bed.

She lifted herself up onto her elbows and made Aleister move off her body and onto the bed. He gave an indignant disgruntled noise in the back off his throat before settling into his new position.

 “Hi babe, did you finish your meeting earlier?

 He nodded with a tired smile as he settles on Evie’s side of the bed and reaches his hand out to softly cradle her delicate cheek in his large hand. “I swear. It seems like everyone is going out of their ways, to not only push my buttons, but lean on them; tape them down!”

 Alec looks so irritated but seems to be trying awfully hard not to show it all to his mate.

 ‘Always thinking of others.” She mused, lovingly.

 “Ooohhh, my poor baby.” She drawls out, endearingly with a pout. She sits all the way up to hug her easily vexed mate and place a gentle sweet kisses on the high points of his cheeks and finally his soft lips.

 He gave a small smile, with a bright blush making its way across his cheeks. “What would I do without a beautiful doting mate like you, my love.”

 She giggled before replying, “Suffer internally for all eternity. Or at least until I show up, so you can take your frustrations out on me.” She waggles her taupe eyebrows at him, and he gave a teasing smirk back.

 They heard an annoyed big huff and a grunt from Aleister and turn just in time to see the large cat heave himself in a seated position, with a wide mouth yawn showcasing his long fangs, before in settling for glaring in their direction; or really Alec’s direction.

 “Oh, did we disturb your napping, baby?” Evie cooed to her little creature. Alec shook his head when he saw Aleister start to dramatize the moment even more. He gave a fake pitiful cry as he made his way to his “Momma”.

‘The day that giant dust bunny is pitiful, is the day I let Clary dye my hair pink.’ Alec thought with an amused snort.

 Aleister began to climb his way up to lay on Evie’s shoulder and she aided him by putting her hand underneath his back feet and boosting him up there. He purred loudly and began to groom her ear and hairline as he usually does, as she stroked his fur from the top of his head down to his tail; taking the excess hair from his shedding and dropping it in the floor to be swept later. “Who’s mommy’s good baby. Huh?” He gave his signature lazy response, where it sounds more like a ‘mmmeeehhh’ than an actual meow, “Yeah, your mommy’s good baby. You’s a good boy. Yes you are!”

 “Your Momma’s precious little creature, aren’t you?” Alec snorted loudly in amusement at that question.

 Evie looks at him in a playful glare as he laughed, “You baby him way too much.”

 “He’s my baby!” She cried out, with a smile. “I’ve had him since he was a kitten; he will always be my baby.” She then muttered lower, more to herself than Alec but he still heard it and it brought a wave of sadness over him.

 “I don’t know what I will do with myself when I finally do lose him.”

 A topic that has been broached by only those brave enough and have known Evie and Aleister’s close relationship the longest. Alec had noted, when hearing of the cat’s age, that Aleister was getting up there in years.

 He only ever brought it up to Clary, of all people, when they both happened to be watching Aleister chasing around the cat toy on a stick that Evie was moving around wildly. Clary had completely tensed up and shifted on her feet at his quietly voiced comment and it was then that Alec knew it was something that also troubled the redhead; for the simple fact that Aleister’s passing would crush Evie beyond any words known to man or angel.

 Alec saw the sad dreaded look in his mate’s eyes, but before he could offer words of comfort, her eyes brighten, and she look at him with her usual grin.

 “How about I freshen up and then we can go down to the kitchen and get something to eat?”

 He smiles and nodded, watching as she sits Aleister on the bed and makes her way to her vanity chair. As she seats down, Aleister hops off the bed and up onto the only available spot on the makeup cluttered vanity and begins grooming the fur on his chest, as if to freshen up himself as well.

 Evie lets out a joyful laugh, as she brushes her hair, at his antics and says, “Why, Aleister! You dapper big boy, I do believe you might just be more handsome than Alexander Lightwood himself.” Aleister makes a noise and begins to purr as he tries to move closer to Evie. Evie leans down to Aleister and he pushes his nose into hers, as if to give her a sweet nuzzling kiss.

 Alec rolls his eyes with a small grin as he watches the two of them. “He’s as much of a princess as you are, my love.” After that particular comment, Aleister glares at the raven-haired man with a loud growl.

 “Oh Aleister, don’t pay attention to him. Haters are gonna hate. They’ll always hate us cause they ain’t us!” She giggles as she picks him up to hug him and give him a kiss right underneath his eye on the sharp point of his furry cheek, before sitting him on the ground.  His heavy frame kind of plops on the ground with a resounding ‘thump’. It’s not that she drop him to far from the ground, but more the fact he was just that big.

 Everyone always commented on how unusually big he was, but that just made Evie love him more. There was a certain comfort to feeling his massive body take up nearly the entirety of her stomach and chest, as a baritone purr resounded from deep within his chest. It left her feeling cold and uncomfortable during a nap without his beloved company. He is always a menacing prowling beast with all others, but he’s as sweet as the day he was bestowed to Evie as a kitten, all those years ago.

 Alec says Evie babied Aleister way too much. Izzy says Aleister was spoiled rotten. Jace swears Aleister hates everyone who isn’t Evie. Clary, well she says Aleister only tolerates her presence in his company because she and his “Momma” are Parabatai. It was all in good fun as they sat in the library relaxing and talking.

It’s almost as if Aleister knows there taunting Evie about him and whether its for fun or not; he’ll give a feral warning growl, lounging in Evie’s lap without moving or opening his eyes. It would send them all howling in laughter at his antics. He’s been a mighty proud creature since he was kitten and he wouldn’t dare let anyone get away with teasing his Evie.

 Aleister trails behind Evie as she heads for the door and the young couple begin making their way down to the large kitchen. As soon as they walk in Evie makes her way to the fridge and pulls out a package of ham; Aleister makes an excited cry before said beast barrels pass his human companion’s mate. Alec glares at the little terror as his leg nearly gives out with the force Aleister knocks into him with, trying to rush pass him.

 Evie holds out a large ham slice for him to take and he gentle takes it from her hand before laying it on the counter and viciously starts tearing into it with a happy growling purr.

“That cat eats better than we do!” Alec laughs. Evie giggles as she puts the rest of the ham back in the fridge.

 “Don’t let Izzy hear you say that. She might really poison your food next time.”

  They share a laugh at the fact that that is in fact a possibly should Izzy hear her elder brother, before both began moving around the kitchen getting the ingredients and things they needed ready to make lunch. There was a blissful domestic air around the whole endeavor that they both immensely enjoyed doing with one another. However, with Aleister sitting on the counter watching, with his tail lazily swishing back and forth behind him, it made the entire thing absolutely perfect.

(A/N): I’m sorry I had to add that second cat gif because it was so hilarious. I feel like that might be something that Aleister would do to another cat. oh my angel; like Church! That gif might end up being a drabble of Aleister and Church at some point, lol!

I pretty much agree with everything said here.

Personally, I have a tendency to gravitate towards the older version of characters, I had the same feelings with Shadowhunters when in the TV show and in TDA the TMI cast were no longer literal teenagers. Maybe it's because I was (and still am, I'm 19) living the actual life of a teenager and it was nothing like what the books wrote, while I still loved and appreciated it in its own way, I did feel a lot more comfortable with the age-up characters. (Unless it's a child to teen to adult growth series like PJO or HP, that's a different type of story)

I think the unfortunate (or maybe fortunate? I don't really know) is that doing the biggest things when you're really young isn't that sustainable for most of the time. In the book, because it's just words and you have to use your imagination to picture the image, there's this suspense of disbelief, but once you actually see it with real people you kind of go "uhhhh..."

I started a whole essay on the changes made to the movie particularly on Alex in September but never got around to finishing it 😂I'll finish it someday I swear! Hopefully by mid-November

But yeah, I also view adaptation and the original source material as paralleling alternate universes. It makes viewing a lot more enjoyable, and there's something beautiful of them finding and loving each other in every universe

Also, I do think as devastatingly handsome and good-looking as the boys are, they're a little old to play teenager now🤣, just image-wise. And yes I know that Marco and Jeff weren't that long ago (especially Jeff), but still

I can’t find it, but there was a post that asked what your favorite change from the book to the film was, and I have decided on mine!

I love that they are older in the movie.

Matthew mentioned changing it to make it feel more like the first “real love” of their lives and not something that could be written off as “puppy love”. I totally get what he means, and I completely agree with the decision.

“I’m never gonna love anybody in the world like I love you.” - Alex Claremont-Diaz, pg. 312

It’s a really beautiful line, but it does make me pause for a moment. Alex is only 22 at this point. As much as I believe him, the vast majority of the population does not fall in love that young and stay with that person for the rest of their life.

Alex isn’t directly referring to marriage here, obviously, but that’s the next step of their relationship if they were confident and ready to.

There’s a reason so many marriages that are made at that age range result in divorces. I’m 22 at the moment, and the idea of getting married to someone, whether I think I “feel forever” about them or not, fucking boggles my mind; I don’t think there’s any circumstances where I would agree to marry someone at my age. A marriage this young is just begging to fall apart.

I mean, we refer to college students, most of whom are in the early 20s age group, as college kids. Alex is still finishing college during the book, while in the film, he’s already completed his initial college degree and has moved forward to law school.

Adult audiences know this too, so a line like this coming from a 22-year-old would likely make them roll their eyes. Their thoughts would be: “You’re practically still a kid, you have no idea what your future will be like. You’re going to change, they’re going to change, and you can’t know that your relationship will work with all that.”

And they’re right, and I agree.

But if an almost 30-year-old makes that statement? That’s far more believable!

And I know some people might be thinking: “Early 20s to late 20s isn’t that big of a gap.”

While that’s true in the grand scheme of a lifetime, a lot can happen in six-seven years. I mean, just look at where the world was back in 2018 compared to where it is now! A person can change a lot in that time.

Regardless, Alex and Henry being closer to thirty rather than twenty serves their love story really well. The level of commitment they are agreeing to feels believable, and like they could actually do it.

P.S. - this isn’t to say that I have a problem with them being younger in the book; I find both versions fantastic in their uniqueness.
