It was on a record called 'Sweden', which is kind of the record where I discovered that I like to get really quiet sometimes, right. Prior to that, I mainly liked to break a vein in my forehead and watch people react. Which is also fun.

[on "The Recognition Scene"] "This takes its title from something that happens in Greek tragedy. Uh, you know, there's a moment in a Greek tragedy where everybody on the stage realizes that they're totally fucked, right? There's this moment where everybody thinks they've been acting independently and just deciding what they were gonna do. And then, then they all look at each other, it's, like, this great moment, where, you know, Antigone looks at Creon and Creon looks at Antigone, and both of them realize it's all going to come to no goddamn good no matter what anybody says." - John Darnielle, 07/02/03, The Guinguette Pirate, Paris.

I made a playlist!! I have always noticed how in many, many, MANY songs, John brings up some random place so I decided to go through every single song on spotify and compile them all into one playlist! I tried to organize it the way it made sense in my brain, so it starts with the "Going to" songs, then does the songs with places in the titles, then there are a few songs that don't have places in the names but rather denonyms, and finally the rest are songs with unrelated titles but that mention places in the lyrics. yes i have autism

'Whole Wide World' for the Mountain Goats ask game!! 🐐🗻
Hmm I don't know Sweden terribly well so this is interesting. I love the sound of this song, it's so soft and intimate. Sadly, as with a lot of early Goats I don't think it's particularly well-written. I'm tempted to say my favorite line is I turned around to face it with real arrogance burning inside because I like that image, but I think the best line in the song is actually The last of the repercussions died off real slow. It's a good setup. Most tMG songs are about Putting A Guy In A Situation, but this one is about Putting A Guy In The Distant Aftermath Of A Situation, which of course is in and of itself a situation but still. It deals with the time after the climactic moment, the time after the crisis, and the time after that, where the consequences have faded. It is left to the listener to decide what the crisis was, and what the repercussions were. The narrator is just sitting in a tree, looking around. The story is already over. It's an interesting moment to write a song about, because we've all been there, but it's not something people often choose to crystallize in their art and hold up for closer examination. JD writes a lot about moments like that. I am reminded of Wolf In White Van, tbh. It starts after the end, you know?
