I shouldn't have.
It should have been him, he should have died instead of Sarah, he should have been the one to get shot, the one who bled out in the grass, his last memories nothing but pain. He should have run faster, turned quicker, put himself between her and the soldier, her and the danger, her and the gun, should have sacrificed himself to make sure that she is safe because that is the only job he has ever had and he failed.
Joel not only tried to kill himself because Sarah was gone but because he does not deserve to live anymore, he should have died right there and then with her, hell, a part of him did die with her. Most of him did. There is no justice in him getting to live while she died, forever fourteen, the definition of innocence, his innocence, and he watched her blood dry on his hands for hours, watching it peel and crumble to dust.
Dust and mud and dirty water while she rots in the ground in an unmarked, shallow grave somewhere in Texas.
Joel shouldn't have lived but he did and he regrets it every single day.

Love your "Behind the Seams" venture - thanks for being so open with us about your creative process :)
fwiw it's understandable to find writing Joel, Tommy, Ellie, and Tess a bit daunting. they're intimidating characters. it speaks to your thoughtfulness and craft that you see the inherent challenges in writing them into your own (excellent) fic. just trying to normalize that sense of trepidation. Joel (to me) is hard to write, hard to pair.
at the risk of coming off like unsolicited advice, have you been able to read Craig Mazin's official TLOU episode 3 script that Deadline published earlier this week? Episode 3 (on screen) is a piece of art (not going into that right now lol) - when I read the beautiful script, it gave me an even deeper appreciation for the screen adaptation. I'd been so focused and moved by Bill+Frank (the script elevates that even more) I'd actually missed how pivotal that episode is for Joel and Ellie re loss, grief, re-calibrating one's purpose and goals. Mazin's script gives a rich interior look into Joel and Tess and Ellie and as a sucker for original/adapted source material, I wonder whether it may be worth diving into for inspiration for upcoming Seams chapters. (not to imply that you need to at all)! :)
Thank you for such a thoughtful message, love! It was very freeing writing down all the insecurities and challenges I see in writing these characters, and I'm glad you enjoyed the BTSeams 🥰
That absolutely doesn't come off as unsolicited advice - it comes off as excellent advice! I actually haven't seen any of the behind the scenes commentary or listened to the podcasts because I was in no headspace to get into all that during the show. But now that I've had some distance from it, and I'm writing for Joel, that definitely sounds like something I want to! I will start with the Episode 3 script, it’s such a beautiful episode, I’m ready to have my heart broken all over again 😭 Thank you for this great tip ❤️

just got my hands on the ep 3 tlou script and I am going to be putting down my favorite moments because I’m absolutely obsessed and nobody can stop me
starting off . super sad . already . just great, already feeling the superb amount of emotional damage :( joel :(
“like you would a dog” idk why I found that funny. he has a kid sitting right in front of him and his first thought is “toss kid beef jerky like dog”
short legs lmao and joel not even slowing down for her. if she wants to walk beside him she’s gonna have to do it herself
love the fact that she wants to talk about guns. is it a crime to let a give a girl a gun every once and a while
I love the fact that joel (someone who has killed people with his bare hands) gets grossed out by some video game ellie likes. idk it’s just so Dad of him and I love it sm
pretty sure those are called Dad Senses. pretty sure ur showing some symptoms of being a good father. pretty sure she is your daughter actually
bill being every introvert ever
frank:
that’s called being gay actually have you ever heard of it
EPISODE 3 AND SHE CAN ALREADY READ HIM. DENIAL IS A RIVER IN EGYPT SAY YOU LOVE EACH OTHER NOBODY’S BUYING THE “IDC ABT U” ACT
I’M SORRY I HAVE NEVER LAUGHED HARDER IN MY ENTRE LIFE - ELLIE LOML PLEASE
If we don’t get any more full scripts I am going to lose it actually. I’m going to scream and cry and throw up and binge watch tlou to the point where I make my own script bc I could not handle that. even if it’s one more. please. answer my prayers.
personally I request the ep 6 script bc I need to know ellie and joel and tommy’s internal thoughts AS SOON AS POSSIBLE
#Ik some ppl like to analyze these things with like paragraphs and paragraphs of thoughts but#my brain cannot do that#it sees a line it thinks “funny :D” or “sad :(“ and that is the extent of it#I’ll leave the analyzing up to other people#and that is ok with me#tlou#the last of us

actually one of my favorite things about episode 3 is that at the end, when Long, Long Time is playing while Joel and Ellie are driving away from Bill and Frank's, the subtitles say the lyrics are, "Life's full of loss/Who knows the cost?" And those are not correct! The real lyrics--and the ones in the script--are "life's full of flaws/who knows the cause." Yet somehow despite the obvious misrendering of the lyrics, the ones used in the subtitles still hit pretty hard in regards to Joel and Ellie specifically. you know? Anyway, unhelpful because they're incorrect subtitles, but oddly feels like a bit of random narrative kismet re: tlou part 2
#yes I did lose my mind trying to figure out what the real lyrics are for a period of time because I was very confused#you know as a person who did not know this song previous to the show#but I actually think it's neat! if yk not helpful to people who rely on subtitles!#tlou#the last of us#like re: tlou part 2. iykyk

all of the prime numbers?
First of all fuck u for making my brain math 🤣
2- What is your favorite episode of your current favorite tv show? - ooh I’ll just go with Doctor Who and say either Demons of the Punjab or Eve of the Daleks!
3- What fandom (or three) are you currently the most invested in? - #1 all the time is absolutely critical role. Others I will say doctor who and warrior nun, but one of those might get knocked out when I’m back on my TLOU bullshit next week
5- If you could marry a fictional character, who would it be? - Yasmin Khan 🥰
7- If Peter Pan showed up at your window tonight to take you to Neverland, would you go with him? - probably!
11- What is your favorite month of the year? - July
13- If you have access to this information, what is currently your most played song? - most played song of 2022 was Chance by Hayley Kiyoko
17- What is your favorite musical? - Into the Woods!
19- What book series do you most want a movie/tv show adaption of? - PRIORY OF THE ORANGE TREE. Would be so good as the next popular high fantasy series fuck got and lotr lmao
23- Least favorite trope? - enemies to lovers only because, especially for m/f couples, it’s never done well and the m is still an asshole
29- What do you want to name your first child? - If I have kids I’m going to foster/adopt so probably won’t pick the name! I’ll save all my good names for scripts and books and dnd characters

You asked me which Star Wars and then didn't know a thing I said! I appreciate the asking though!
I have heard that about HOTD. My local comic con there's a girl who did a Daemon and Rhaenyra piece and side by side they looked incredible. If I had watched the show, I know I would have bought them. I want to watch but I feel like I should finish GOT first but everyone says to not do that and just watch. Maybe that's what I'll do this weekend, I got 3 days off that can be my Saturday. Watch HOTD, move some stuff around, build a Lego set (maybe?), that sounds nice (I needed more things to distract me from the writing I was behind on).
I have spent an obscene amount of money for sure at a con. Luckily this horror one was so much smaller than I thought it would be and I'm not super into horror, so it was really just the autographs I got (and some art prints). My local comic con is next week, and I don't intend to spend a crazy amount there. I need to save money for a con in December... there's 10 people I want signatures from...
(If it wasn't like half my savings after my California trip, I probably would have thrown my card at the man to buy the clicker mask)
I wouldn’t recommend finishing the last season, the plot doesn’t make sense at all, and even the actors were confused when they read the script. HOTD is a bit boring at first, but it gets a lot better toward the last couple of episodes!!
Which con are you going to in December? I really need to go to one
Yeah… that price was a little bit too high for me but anything for TLOU

Last night’s episode of #TheLastofUs (#tlou) was good, but it doesn’t hold a candle to the masterpiece that was episode 3. There’s a reason everyone’s talking about that episode. I dig the improvements that were made to the characters Henry and Sam. I don’t buy Kathleen as a character. Overall, again, I enjoyed it.
”#Famous” is another intentional #cringe song (as explained in post 68). I don’t actually believe I’ll be famous, nor do I care about fame. If GoBoy were to gain traction by one of the songs going viral or whatever, I’d still live just as quiet of a life as I’m living now. The only change that would occur in my life is that GoBoy would become a full-time endeavor, rather than a side hustle.
The vocal recording session for “Famous” was a drunken one. Throughout GoBoy 3, 4 and 5, a lesson was relearned after a seven-year hiatus: confidence is important in a recording booth, as listeners can sense any hesitancy in your voice. This rediscovery would lead me to experiment with drinking while recording GoBoy 6. What results would liquid courage bring?
Songs 102 - 117 (total of 16 songs) were produced simultaneously, resulting in an eight-month gap in releases. Melodies, chord structures and lyrics were written for all 16 songs over the course of four days before recording any of them. During the recording phase, one-week intervals took place between recording sessions to let vocal cords recover (the raspy, punk style sounds cool, but it destroys your voice after a few hours). During those intervals, all free time was spent splicing and aligning the vocal tracks to the tempo, pitch correction (everyone uses pitch correction in the studio, even Beyoncé, shut up), then selecting and splicing together the best vocal takes.
Some of these recording sessions resulted in me having difficulty speaking the following day at work while vocal cords healed, because I don’t have any technique. I hold a microphone to my face and yell into it.
I watched #Fargo (1996 film) about two-dozen times in a row while mixing vocals for this song. That film captivated me, from the script, to the performances, to the music, to the editing. Bravo #CoenBrothers. No Country For Old Men (2007 film) is another masterpiece directed by them.
For “Famous,” a goal was to have different instruments for each section of the song. 1st chorus and verse instruments are different from the 2nd chorus and verse.
