I was four years old when The Little Mermaid came out. I loved Ariel; she had blue eyes and red hair like me and she was so grown up and pretty. I would sing “Part of Your World” for hours. I made my brothers sing “Under the Sea” and “Kiss the Girl” until they rebelled. I still have my Ariel doll from thirty years ago.

I want black children to love Ariel like I do. I want some little four-year-old black girl, maybe named Nikki, to go, “Ariel looks like me!” I want black kids to sing “Part of Your World” until their families are sick of the song.

Making Ariel black doesn’t take away from Jodie Benson��s Ariel. Halle Bailey isn’t “stealing” anything. She’s adding to the wonder and giving a new generation of little girls a role model.

And the fact is, it truly doesn’t matter if little white girls can identify with a black Ariel or not because white Ariel still exists. Not to mention that black children and other children of color have had to identify with white characters for decades. It won’t kill any white kids to see a black princess for like, the third time ever.

I am so excited for my childhood heroine to be real. I can’t wait to share her with the children in my life. I can’t wait for black kids to love Ariel like I do and see themselves in her.

Ariel is still the Little Mermaid, and she’s going to be part of my world no matter what.
