"I have to go now. Take care. Just take me to the bamboo forest today." Maximus whines loudly. "Answer quietly, all right?"

I am once again back on my tkem bullshit - this time about our favourite Seventh-Grade Official, Maximus!
Sadly, I am not answering my longstanding question about whether Maximus is meant to be a boy or a girl (Maximus is played by a male horse and is referred to as “he” in the English subs at the beginning of the show, but Nari writes on her sign “she’s gone..” in regards to Maximus and from that moment on Maximus is referred to as “she” in the English subs - I love consistency T_T) HOWEVER I will be answering the question about Maximus’ breed.
First, I found this on a post about Benjamin, Maximus’ actor, on the Kim’s Horse Naver blog:
Tumblr media
Though the font style is tricky for someone like me who does not speak Korean, I think I can pretty firmly say that the second line reads “품종: 벨기에 온혈 종” or “Breed: Belgian Warmblood” (The ending 종 threw me off, but I think it just means “species” in this content, because 온혈 is apparently “warm-blooded.”)
So that’s Benjamin’s breed… but Maximus is meant to be a rare Spanish breed. Back to google, then.
Long story short, I think I’ve found a suitable candidate. Though I’m not a horse person in any way, I at least know that white horses with black noses (like Benjamin/Maximus) are grey, and according to my (admittedly brief) research, Andalusian horses are often grey. Theyre known as the “Pure Spanish Horse,” but there’s a sub-strain within the Andalusian breed called a Carthusian, and these are said to be the purest of the Andalusian horses. Nowadays there are only about 500 Carthusian horses left in Spain, so I’m going to go out on a limb and assume they’re pretty rare. Further backing up the Andalusian theory is the fact that many European warmbloods have Andalusian ancestry, so Benjamin might not be such a distant relation to the Andalusians.
So that’s my hypothesis - Maximus is meant to be a grey Carthusian, rare even in Spain, so it makes sense that Maximus would have had to have been specially imported to be the only one of their kind in Corea.

Full disclosure, Gentle Readers.
I am a pre-teen girl obsessed with horses.
[pre-teen girl in spirit only at this point]
I mean, there’s a reason that I’m neighbors with this:
Tumblr media
[the foregrounded green roof is a boarding stable and show barn #horselifegoals]
Anyway, I don’t know much about Lee Min Ho, but after watching him ride in multiple shows I can confirm that anytime the man is on a horse my interest easily triples. And he hasn’t embarrassed himself yet (at least in the shows I’ve seen). In fact, I’m pretty sure that in TKEM there’s only one shot, (at the racetrack where he makes that running mount) that is not, in point of fact, LMH, but a stuntie.
Feel free to check out the beginning of the video above to see him riding bts. He’s one of very few lead actors that (afaik) are ever filmed actually galloping on their own mounts. [In shows like The Legend of the Blue Sea, The Great Doctor, and The King: Eternal Monarch]
But here’s what really has my attention and curiosity:
Tumblr media
It’s a terrible screen-grab, but here Lee Gon and Maximus are arriving with Tae-Eul in the Kingdom. When they left the Republic, and LG lifted her onto Maximus [sidebar: he probably should have asked her if she’d ever ridden before], he sits her a modified sidesaddle, both legs to one side, which had me worried bc they had some distance to travel, and some of it at speed. By the time they’re in the bamboo forest, though, she’s now astride, which allowed me to unclench a little. And then I thought I noticed that he’d given TE his stirrups?!?!?? [*I also made a mental note that he must have also stopped to adjust the stirrup length?!?? BC no WAY is LG’s leg length comparable to TE’s]
This, right before they ride for the obelisks–at what seems to be some rate of speed. Umm…seemed a bit odd.
Tumblr media
But here, in the screenshot above, once they are in the Kingdom, Maximus has–a totally different saddle. They’ve given TE and LG each their own sets of stirrups (not at all the saddle configuration she had in the courtyard when TE was lifted onto her), and frankly, I am way too invested in wanting to see what the saddle underneath them looks like, if it’s still the Western that LG has on Maximus usually, or if they production team has also modified it with with two tandem seats…
I mean, viewers are probably not supposed to notice this at all–it was caught only in a brief shot or two–but I would imagine it added to the comfort-level of the actors (as well as their safety) as they sat that horse through numerous takes over long time periods–and it also makes me more confident that the shots of TE and LG racing toward the portal between worlds was actually still the two of them on Maximus, rather than astride those hobby horse dummies in the LOTR bts.
Anyway…that’s all the horse obsessing for today from Chez Nell- - -

Aight, I was shookt that we already got a kiss! And it's only the 5th episode!! 😆 (not hyping that kdrama kiss as much though, coz it might not be everyone's cup of tea, I was just really shocked)
Also, I kinda liked the quirkiness the king had for this ep 😅
The gender reveal cracked me up as well, was not expecting that tidbit at all 😂🐴🐎 (not sure if this is giving it away already lmao)
(Also I love Lady Oh! So much "aigoos" came from here 😂🤭)

Imma repeat what I said last week... HOPE ORBIT GETS AN AWARD COZ IM IN LOVE WITH IT
But once Hwasa starts singing, it signals the end of an episode ☹
Not gonna lie, but it was Hwasa' s Orbit that got me hooked to watching The King: Eternal Monarch.
BUT THAT 4TH EPISODE THOUGH. I'M-

Tkem novel 18
Chapter 4 - Facing a fate full of sorrow
Tumblr media
After meeting up with Yeong, Tae-Eul went straight back home to change. Right as she was hanging her coat, her movement halted, gaze stopping on the other piece of clothing in her dresser.
It was the coat she was wearing that day, that fateful day when she had traveled to the Kingdom of Corea. Stepping closer, she carefully stretched her hand inside the coat pocket. She took out the piece of photography she had made sure to hide from Gon. It was the polaroid shot she took when she visited the Royal Palace grounds. It was her first time wearing such a garment, and she could see herself smiling brightly. She couldn’t quite remember what she had found so funny and interesting.
Grabbing the picture, Tae-Eul walked over to her desk and sat down. Then she reached into the drawer and pulled out a 100,000 Won bill from the Kingdom. She stared at the drawing of Gon dressed in his royal robes, his kind expression and dashing looks forever etched onto the bank note.
The King of a nation.
For a long while, she had thought that these pieces of paper were a promotional flyer of some sort. With a slight smile, Tae-Eul folded the bill in half and placed it next to her picture. An improvised couple shot.
“… We didn’t take any photos together.”
They didn’t make any promises as to when they would meet each other again which made Tae-Eul miss Gon even more. He was navigating through worlds of unknowns, and she would only feel safe if he were next to her, where she could see him with her own two eyes.
There was no way of contacting him, she couldn’t even know if he was okay or not. A wave of sadness took over her as she realized she didn’t even have a real picture of the two of them together.
At least she had this.
It was funny in a way, and beautiful too. This made up couple shot that soothed her loneliness.
Yet another night without Gon by her side.
————
Tumblr media
How many times did she visit this place again? Tae-Eul was now all too familiar with the dark forest, the night breeze flowing through the trees, leaves rustling. She gave a mirthless laugh.
Right here, in the middle of the thick bamboo forest, used to stand two tall pillars. A gate that led her to Gon’s universe. That day felt like forever ago. Their goodbyes felt like a distant past as well.
So this was what it was like to be waiting for someone.
They had decided to break free of their fate, to gather up their courage and stand up to whatever awaited them. But it was so hard. Her mind was filled with worry and each passing second felt like an eternity.
She missed him.
This unbearable longing led her here. But it was pointless. There was no way she would see the stone pillars tonight.
They were supposed to be like any other couple, talking on the phone and deciding where to meet. Holding hands, joking and talking about nonsensical things. She didn’t understand how they ended up having to put their lives on the line and fighting fate. Just thinking about it brought tears to her eyes.
“Let’s go. Let’s just go.” Tae-Eul mumbled dejectedly.
As she finally mustered the will to leave, a flash caught her attention. Surprised by the sudden brightness, Tae-Eul turned on her heels, gaze shifting towards the source of the light.
There, in the middle of the path, was a vivid balloon floating mid-air. Just like what she saw… in between the two universes.
Far into the distance, she could hear the sounds of a horse galloping. Soon after, Gon appeared atop Maximus, racing towards her without stopping.
A lot of unexplainable things had happened since she met Gon, but she didn’t think she felt this happy before. She stopped in her tracks, eyes round in consternation, lips slightly parted.
Gon seemed to be as surprised as her, his shocked expression obvious.
“Hey.”
“Are you really here? Are you finally here? Did you just get here?” Tae-Eul made her way towards  him, steps quickening as she approached him.
Gon stepped down his horse and immediately crushed Tae-Eul in a tight embrace.
Holding each other as if it wasn’t enough, pressing into each other to make up for all the time they couldn’t spend together… Their embrace echoed the longing they felt until then.
“Have you been waiting here?”
“Are you really here?” Tae-Eul asked again, stifling a sob.
Gon pulled her closer. He didn’t want to let her go, but it wasn’t time yet. Leaning down, he buried his face in the crook of her neck.
“Not yet. Not entirely. I missed you. I missed you so much, I felt like dying. So I came here just to hear your voice and leave.” He whispered against her ear. His heart slowed to a steady rhythm, his body gradually relaxing as he breathed in her scent.
How much did he run? He couldn’t remember how much time he spent in between the two worlds, dashing through the endless road with Maximus. Alone. Day in and day out, mind focused on one goal until he only wanted to hear Tae-Eul’s voice again.
“My voice?”
“I was going to call you from that pay phone over there.” Gon fished out a few coins from his pocket. This was all the change he had left from his first stay in the Republic.
Tae-Eul felt her throat close up and hot tears streamed down her face.
Gon’s heart clenched painfully at the sound of her choppy breathing. He hated to see her cry, hated to hear her uncontrollable sobs. Her head was bent down, face still buried in his chest. Gon’s large hands cupped her face and gently urged her to look up.
“Please show me your face, hm? I… don’t have much time.” His voice shook at the thought of leaving again.
But tradition was tradition, and he had to go back to the Kingdom, had to go back in time for the royal ceremony. The Palace and everyone else awaited him before New Year’s Eve.
He had thought that hearing her voice would be enough. But never once had he thought that fate would bring her to him by sheer coincidence, that he would get to have her in his arms again, revel in the warmth of her embrace.
Keeping his head down, Gon held his gaze on her. She looked exhausted.
A wave of bitter sadness overcame him at the idea of parting ways again when they didn’t even get to enjoy their reunion. He wished more than anything to stay here with her.
He didn’t want the only words to come out of his mouth to be about time running out. He didn’t want to tell her he had to leave, that he didn’t know when he would see her again.
Tae-Eul was right. He was a terrible boyfriend.
Gon moved impossibly closer and quietly kissed her tear-stained face.
Tae-Eul continued to grasp onto him, knuckles clenching on his coat.
A gust of wind rippled through the dense bamboo path, the leaves rustling, humming a lonesome melody in the silence of the night.

Happy Birthday to You
Oct 28 is Lee Gon’s birthday. I wrote this story because I’m a glutton for pain and my TKEM withdrawal is real.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
PC: Ctto
October 28, 2020 | Republic of Korea
It was a sleepless night.
She tossed and turned until she decided to get up, put on a hoodie and jeans, grabbed her coat and car key, then tiptoed away from her apartment.
1:00 a.m.
She drove in the quiet of the night and got there in a breeze.
The phone booth was the first thing she saw. She went inside and caressed the buttons and the handset. At several points of a different timeline, he was here. She lingered, with the hope that sharing the same space would somehow lessen the pain.
She was wrong. The yearning had only gotten stronger.
She walked on, deeper into the bamboo forest, in the dead of night, against everything she would advise young women as a police officer.
Do the same stars shine on both their worlds?
If she would wish upon one of them in earnest, would it carry her birthday wish to him?
She stopped at the spot where the obelisks stood, where he had crossed into her world.
“Happy birthday, Lee Gon.” She spoke into the sky. “The moon and the stars above as my witness, saranghae… I will always love you!”
Her tears took over, making her choke on her words.
“Please come back… please come back… I’m waiting, every day I’m waiting.”
She didn’t think her prayer would be answered tonight. It hadn’t been for six months. But she pleaded with God just the same – figured her persistence might move even fate and destiny someday.
She didn’t know how long she had been standing there. Her face was icy from the chilled fall air and her heart ached from imagining him running through the portal toward her.
She couldn’t hear the crashing of their bodies or feel the warmth of their embrace.
“Is this what Hell is like?” A rhetorical question she knew too well the answer to. She had been in her personal hell.
She showed up at the police station early to avoid her father’s questions.
Work had been her refuge even if she was only biding time.
And time had been mostly a curse that passed too slow and passed too fast.
Just like today.
She followed some evidence of her current case, she filed a few reports, she interacted with the squad like any regular day – yet she still had time to sob in the bathroom.
When it was finally time to leave work, she sat patiently in the packed afternoon traffic and arrived around sunset.
The glass encasing the phone booth reflected the bright orange light of the lowering sun and cloaked its surrounding in beautiful golden hue. The colour of the MSD she would have made for him to toast his birthday. Yes, she had planned his birthday – it would have included a day off from work, fried chicken, a walk along the Han river, the swanky hotel he loved and unhurried love-making.
The only thing missing from her plan for today – him.
She had no logical reason to be back at the bamboo forest so soon. But like she had been possessed, she stood once again by what she knew to be the entrance to the portal.
She was hoping against hope that fate wouldn’t be so cruel today, of all days.
“You are thirty-four now, take care of yourself for me. Don’t catch a cold.”  She whispered into the wind as the sky turned dark. “Happy birthday, my heart…” Tae-eul reached up to touch her necklace as another lone tear fell.
 October 28, 2020 | Kingdom of Corea
The fall was always beautiful in the Kingdom and people everywhere were taking advantage of the start of the three holidays in honour of the King’s birthday.
Lee Gon had vehemently opposed to any public celebrations for his birthday this year. Head Court Lady Noh and the senior staff had attempted to object but they knew better.
The King had been different the last few months. He was burdened with something that snuffed the sparkles in his eyes. He had been attending to his duties during the first half of each week but had consistently been “inside his study working on a complex mathematic problem” the other half of the time.
“I would be in my studies during the holidays and over the weekend.” He had informed Lady Noh.
“That’s no way to spend your birthday, Pyeha. You should be going out meeting beautiful ladies.”
“That’s what I have been doing. You’d know when I’ve found the right one.” Lady Noh thought he was teasing her and she couldn’t understand the hint of sadness in his tone.
He had indeed been meeting beautiful ladies – all those different versions of Jeong Tae-eul: all beautiful, all bright, all seemed happy – but all not her.
None of them recognized him. None of them was balm to his soul.
He couldn’t take it anymore.
He should let himself do whatever he wanted on his birthday, even if it were to tinker with the time axis of the portal.
He had not perfected his calculations and the trial-and-error attempts through different doors and universes had been painfully disappointing.
He was sure he had found the old timeline and the right door to his Tae-eul before the reset. He just didn’t know exactly what date or time he would cross into.
He had brought with him flowers, his favorite ones, to give her. He knew what he had to say to her – he had said those things to her every night, when he had pretended she was there by his side.
He just needed to see her.
The Taekwondo centre, the tea place and the courtyard all looked welcoming as he approached. Then he had to stop and took several deep breaths to steel himself when he caught sight of her standing in front of the big window watering the seeds she brought from the Kingdom. He could feel the sting of tears in his eyes.
He had found his beautiful lady, even if this would all just be temporary.
He stood staring, couldn’t take his eyes off her. She looked up, saw him, and ran out the door.
He was scared to walk up to her, to touch her, afraid she might disappear.
She looked like an angel in front of him, pure and most beautiful. His heart ached from how much love he felt for her.
He finally took the steps toward her.
“Hey.
“Have you been well?”
She nodded with tears in her eyes. “It took you, a while this time.”
He couldn’t tell her what was to come. He couldn’t tell her how much pain he was in. But he could tell her she was everything that mattered.
“Because I had to come from far away.” He looked down at the flowers he was carrying.
“I realized… that I never gave you a single flower. That’s why…
“I crossed the universe for you.”
She moved forward, then stepped back, instinctively recognizing he was not the same Lee Gon who left a few weeks ago.
He understood her hesitation. But he had no time to waste.
He got closer and put the bouquet of flowers in her hands. “But the thing is,
“I have to go back now.” He could hardly finish the sentence.
She had liked the idea of him leaving less and less, so she grabbed his hand. “Going back?” She questioned like a plea.
He stifled a sob that was threatening to escape. “Right.”
What if he would decide to throw caution to the wind and stay with her? He wanted to, badly.
“I also realized I never told you this.”
He slowly gathered enough courage to look up at her, letting her perfect face sink deep into his memory. This memory would have to last him until he was able to find the right her again.
“Saranghae.”
“I am deeply…
“in love with you.”
His gaze was soft, sincere yet most sorrowful. She was moved, elated and scared out of her mind. He was telling her like he would not have another chance to ever again.
He bent down to kiss her, as deeply as he possibly could.
His tears fell.
She reached up, held onto his hand like she had always done while kissing him back just as deeply.
Her tears fell.
He had wished the kiss could last their lifetime but he knew he couldn’t stay. He made himself walk away but not before telling her, “There will come a moment when it seems I’ve disappeared.
I don’t want you to worry too much when that happens.
It just means… I’m walking through the frozen moments in time.”
He had made the decision to leave her, to go back in time to stop Lee Lim before he could wreak havoc to both worlds, because she had given him strength. In the days and months they had fallen in love with each other, she had shown him what it meant to not be alone, to have a soul mate who would be there no matter how dire the circumstances were, and to have a lover who would love him for him. He would forever be thankful for having her in his life and he would always love her with everything he had.
But he had doubts nowadays, about whether the wrongs he had righted were worth the prospect of living out his life without her, the only person who inspired him every day with the joy of life.
Why he missed her utterly on his birthday.
She had told him the larger the fate, the more he needed to walk to reach his destination and that they just hadn’t reached their destination yet.
So he walked, back toward the portal, back to the Kingdom – leaving behind the old timeline, leaving behind the Tae-eul he fell so deeply in love with, in search for the one waiting for him in her new timeline.
He would get back on Maximus, he would go through more doors, more universes.
And he would pray for that tomorrow when he would find where he left his heart and his soul.
Maybe his next birthday would be different.
He closed his eyes, made his wish, as another lone tear fell.
Notes:
Sorry this is so painful. Based on canon timeline, October 28, 2020 is a sad birthday for Lee Gon and for Tae-eul.
Promise the next chapter (of year 2021) will be all fluff.
You can find this story also on AO3.
................
Watch Lee Min-ho and Kim Go-eun’s superb performance in this scene. Their sadness is palpable. His pauses and pacing tell the story.

TKEM Cannon Continuation: Happily Ever After Series
To Say That: Series of standalone one-shots set after the end of The King Eternal Monarch.
Never Again: Being the Queen of the Kingdom of Corea meant that there was a lack of freedom to just get up and go wherever, whenever. A freedom which Jeong Tae-Eul misses greatly so she takes a chance but expects neither the consequences nor her husband's anger.
The Bet: It all started when Jeong Tae-Eul blamed Lee Gon when they were caught in a compromising position, claiming that he just couldn’t keep his hands off her. But he was of the opinion that it was Tae-Eul who couldn’t keep her hands off him. Of course, the logical consequence is a bet to see who cracks first to determine who has trouble keeping their hands off of who – too bad they know exactly what makes the other tick.
A Series of Wicked Events: This is a collection of unrelated smut one-shots featuring Lee Gon and Jeong Tae Eul. As such, they will not be sequential and can be read alone.
The Pregnancy Chronicles: The day Jeong Tae-Eul found our she was pregnant was an eventful one. It involved a massive tabloid storm, one of her best friends was left mortified and angry while the other suffered a concussion. Her husband however looked almost deranged and had a huge smile on his face despite all of that. And at the moment she knew there was never going to be a dull moment throughout her entire pregnancy.
To Neigh That: Maximus, the King's Horse, weighs in on the progression of the relationship between her owner and his new female friend.
TKEM Alternate Universe: Lee Gon x Jeong Tae-Eul

Her mark had appeared at birth, a neat type font saying Lee Gon, meaning that he was older than her, he existed before she was born. The King eternal Monarch episode 12
Taeul and |Time Travel
Tumblr media
Taeul is our main narrator as I mentioned before, she has noticed now that our story involves time travel. Her reactions upon realising that things are set in motion is to be terrified. We see it in this episode when Gon gives her the plum blossom necklace, it’s the same flowers he gave her when he came from our present/future to see her and tell her he’ll come find her again. Gon has told Taeul that if he loses her, or if the door closes he’ll open the door of the universe. This means that Taeul has guessed just like Gon has (but for a different reason because he’s being punished by frozen time not time travel) that the doors will close and something will cause him to come to her looking tired and sorrowful to ‘break up’ with her. She can tell something will happen to her, or to her loved ones because the doors end up being shut, he will lose her. So she tells him not to give her flowers, she avoids wearing the necklace until a glorious moment. I’ve already said what I think this will be, their wedding or him putting it on because finding her will be his glorious moment.
Tumblr media
She’s actively avoiding their fate I think trying to prolong it. Remember she’s chosen to be with Gon despite knowing that Gon and her will have a sorrowful ending, she’s already decided to sacrifice it. But now she seems to actually want to avoid it as much as she can. I think however that in order to save Taeul, Gon might disssapear hence why she seems angry at Lim and depressed when talking about him. She’s also not wearing the necklace then either in the future. But Gon is dressed in every attire she noticed, he’s holding the sword which she noticed in his room, the outfit for the glorious moment and he has maximus when he looks at the portal seriously. No matter how she’s going to avoid it,this is their fate and its painful. Seeing Taeul try to avoid that fate is painful at the same time she’s not going to try and change it or stop it. She’s going to leave everyday like its her last. That’s what she accepted and chose to do as a sacrifice. Taeul’s id card also represents that, that she’s the person who is affected, the reason for hy everything  starts.
Tumblr media
Taeul knows one day Gon will have to look for her, so I think she knows she will be the one hurt at the end of this, in terms of death or stuck without him. She will have to keep waiting for him to find her but I also think she knows he will find her.
Tumblr media
So now we know that different aspects of time has been revealed to our main characters. Time is now seen as an urgent thing to upstart by Gon because by his analysis and scientific mind he’s been able to calculate that Time was going to soon stop forever. This means that there has to be a prevention of both him and Lim moving through the portal  for that to stop being a threat,. The flute has to be returned back to Gon whole and time has  to stop freezing. The doors have to close, in the end Taeul has to choose him for their happy ending she has to choose to come to Corea because the doors can’t stay open. Gon sees the powers of the flute as a punishment right now. I did say there are lots of science and mathematics needed to understand King’s monarch.
That’s why KES made Gon obsessed with science and maths. Taeul the liberal art major gets to notice time as something magical, she can see it as a way to bring her and Gon closer and survive this fate that they have now. She ‘s not going to mention this to him though because she’s more focused on avoidance, avoidance, avoidance. I think when she dies her speech would be that she’ll wait for him to find her again. The way to find her is to start the loop, to save him self and become the white Knight that saves Alice and find her again. And that’s exactly what’s happened. So yes the doors will have to close, meaning Taeul and Gon will have to be separated unless she chooses to come over to Corea. But time is also a solution to our couple being together eternally, stuck in a maze looking and waiting for each other everyday.
Tumblr media
I also want to touch on this as well. Waiting is a huge theme in TKEM as well. Three Literature pieces have alluded to Waiting, Arthur with Merlin waiting for Arthur to return back to his monarch, the book of Azaleas by Kim Siwon that Lady noh reads is about a lover waiting for his lover to return, the flowers Taeul is planting are known as reincarnation lillies, they take 2 years to blossom, waiting is involved there, Taeul has to keep waiting just like all these characters for Gon to return to her, Lady Noh also has to keep waiting for Gon to return to, to the monarchy. But because fate is on their side they will come through. And reunite always.
I have another theory that the land of frozen time will be important to the way Gon finds a loophole out of this maze. This is the place where time is the most abstract, in there time stopping is not seen as a punishment but helps enlogate life span, but it also can act as the middle of both worlds, the place where both worlds can join and not have any effect on balance.

KitKat reads the TKEM Novel: Chapter 2
That night, a broken flute
So. Chapter 2. If you haven’t guessed already by the title of this chapter, it covers the topic of that fateful night back in 1994, when Lee Lim kills Lee Ho, little Gon comes in, gets traumatised, they both leave with half of the Manpasikjeok, etc etc. That’s kind of… the first half of this chapter? The whole chapter is definitely affected by this, but after this there are two more scenes in this chapter: one where Gon is looking at Taeeul’s ID card in his Alice in Wonderland book (notably skipping over “Are you having fun, Captain Jo?” and that subsequent conversation between Gon and Yeong which is one of my personal favourite scenes, but anyway. They do reference it, but it’s not the same), and then the scene where Gon is at the stables, he hears the sound of the flute, and he runs away on Maximus and goes into the portal.
My first thought? Not enough Yeong. Again. For real this time. Yeong has one line of dialogue, and that’s just a radio call to Hopil and the others to chase after Gon, there’s no new insights about Yeong in this chapter, absolutely nothing. And I know, I know that I can’t really judge a chapter like this on its Yeong content when none of these scenes contained Yeong in the first place, but like… they could have included that conversation between Gon and Yeong in Gon’s study? Instead, the allusion to it we get is this:
Why didn’t ‘he’ who saved him come back? Wasn’t it worth coming to see him at least once?
Yeong said that he didn’t come because Gon had grown up so well that he didn’t need anyone’s help, but Gon wanted to ask, ‘didn’t he want to come and see how well he had grown up?’
There it is, folks! That’s all we’re getting! And look… it’s easy enough to tell from the scene in the show that Gon isn’t really satisfied with Yeong’s answer, but a part of me does feel disappointed that this heartfelt conversation between those two in the first episode was boiled down to this in the book. None of the tenderness, none of the warmth, just “idc yeongie i still want to see my saviour :/.” And then… hoo boy. I can already tell that this book is going to test my patience as someone who is not particularly a taegon enjoyer, because a few paragraphs down we get this absolute gem.
The government ID in his hand was the only trace he had left behind, and it was a question. Every day, Gon would ask the woman on the card, ‘Do you know why he saved me? Why I survived?’ Thanks to this, the woman had become a habit for him. After twenty-five years, she was more familiar than anyone else. For Gon, it was comforting. Before he knew it, she had become the reason he was alive.
I’m sorry. I’m sorry, whAT?! The reason he was alive? His reason for living?? More familiar than anyone else????? Bestie… she is a piece of plastic!!! As far as you know right now!!!!! If this is your reason for living… Gon, blink twice if you need to see a therapist. Oh, wait, hang on, this reminds me of another passage in this chapter…
Was he really dead? Suddenly, he felt a surge of doubt.
Maybe it was because that night, twenty-five years ago, was still so vivid. The stickiness of stepping through the blood of innocents, the smell of blood that stung his nostrils. The pain of the strangulation, the thinning of his breath. The sight of his father’s lifeless body in front of him. The underlying dread, the fear. The emotions were as sharp as the sensations.
However, now that Gon was the king, they were emotions he couldn’t show anyone. Walking slowly to his desk, Gon composed himself as he sat down. The good news was that he wasn’t weak enough to be consumed by the memories of that day.
Oh, well, that’s ok then! Don’t worry everyone! Gon is fine, actually! Sure, he still has very vivid memories of that awful night, he still hates people touching his body, he can’t wear a tie without getting flashbacks to that night, he doesn’t feel like he can share this with anyone because of his status as the king, but don’t worry! He’s not so weak that he’s super affected by this or anything, that would be totally cringe.
Gon, I’m going to say this once again, blink twice if you need to see a therapist. Because this… my god. That’s an unhealthy thought pattern if I’ve ever heard one. I think the show wants the solution to this to be “gon is fine enough to be a great boyfriend, but if he ever does need to talk to anyone, this will only ever be taeeul because he the king to her.” What I’m hearing, however, is “gon needs to trust his loved ones, and learn to be comfortable with the fact that he’s both the king and a person, and he needs to be comfortable with communicating with people like yeong and lady noh and prince buyeong who have loved him for a very long time and want gon the person to be alright.” Like… surely the message here isn’t just that Gon can never ever trust anyone from the Kingdom with his emotions, right? Where’s the growth there? Finding someone from another universe is the most convoluted loophole in this situation, when he could just like… talk to his best friend? Even if that’s hard for him, growth is hard! But it’s important!
But *ahem* anyway, sorry, this is meant to be about the novel, not my wider thoughts about the show in general…
You might be wondering, hey KitKat, you said that this chapter was half about the night of the treason, so why haven’t you spoken about that? And that… is because I don’t really have that much to say? It’s mostly just an action sequence, there aren’t really any character moments that made me like !!!!, like the other parts did. The main detail is that it really hammers in the detail that Lee Lim feels unfairly treated because of the nature of his birth. He’s jealous of his brother and his nephew for being born into a life where they never really had to struggle.
Actually, you know what? I am going to share this paragraph, purely so I can go on another side tangent.
Prince Imperial Geum. Lee Lim was crowned Prince Imperial Geum at the age of thirteen. He was the firstborn son, but his mother died before she could become queen, and she was posthumously declared a noblewoman. So, his younger brother, who knew nothing and was only good, became the king.
Now, let’s do some maths, shall we? Both Lee Lim and Lee Ho have confirmed dates of birth in the show. Lee Lim was born on 27th February 1951, and Lee Ho was born on 23rd October 1952. (Another fun fact is that Gon’s mother was born on 8th August 1965, so when Gon was born on 28th October 1987, his mother was 22 and his dad was 35, and I know that age gap relationships can be perfectly consensual and loving but man… I can’t deny that something there feels a little bit icky… but anyway.) Assuming neither Lee Ho nor Lee Lim were born prematurely, this implies that Lee Lim was conceived in May 1950, and Lee Ho was conceived in January 1952. If their father, King Haejong, was doing everything by the book, if Lee Lim’s mother was his official partner, and the earliest that she died was 27th February 1951, this means that King Haejong moved on from this love of his life to get to the baby-making stage with Lee Ho’s mother in less than a year. It’s… plausible? But if Lee Ho was legitimate, then King Haejong and his new partner had to be married somewhere between February 1951 and October 1952, and it would have had to have been a big royal wedding with a lot of planning, and… mmmMH I don’t want to make any conclusions, because there are a few explanations for this quick timeline and it’s much more fun if this is left up to individual interpretation, but what I am pretty sure on is that this situation with King Haejong and his lovers wasn’t as simple as “:( lee lim’s poor mother died before she could be made the queen.” It’s giving… less tragic, more scandal, somewhere on this timeline. Either way, I am narrowing my eyes at you, King Haejong.
Mmmh… anything else? Maybe this:
In the Cheonjongo scene, Yoo Gyeongmu, Lee Lim’s second in command, says to him that they need to leave because the “Golden Army” is coming. In the official English subs on Netflix, this is just translated as Royal Guard, BUT it’s definitely a different word. Royal Guard, in the book, has always been 근위대, but Yoo Gyeongmu specifically refers to a certain 금군, and this had specific Hanja next to it in the book, so it must be a thing. What is this Golden Army? Will it be referenced again, other than in this scene? It’s not a code name, little Gon also thinks to himself that his saviour is leaving because the Golden Army is on their way. Is it a specific task force within the Royal Guard? If so, what do they do?? I have a horrible suspicion that we’ll never know.
Oh, and one more thing before I bullet point exactly what we’ve learnt from this chapter.
It was said that the prince was a prodigy, a genius who could read, write, and do mathematics at an early age.
*quietly adds ‘hyperlexia’ next to ‘savant mathematical abilities’ onto my imaginary list of evidence of gon being autistic*
That post will come eventually. But not for a while.
So!! What have we learnt in chapter two?
Somewhere on the palace grounds, vaguely near Cheonjongo, is a gingko tree!
Where Lee Lim was described as being bold and cruel, Lee Ho was described as having a “cool temperament that could be considered weak.” Even if Lee Ho isn’t in my good books for getting a 21 year old pregnant when he was 34, that still feels kind of mean.
Cheonjongo was home to “various treasures, from crowns to cash, ceramics to swords, treasures handed down from generation to generation.”
The current Captain of the Royal Guard died that night, stepping in front of Lee Ho.
The Netflix subs miss out Lee Ho saying something that roughly translates to “What the heck?!” before he asks “Brother, what do you think you’re doing?” which is something that I wish they’d kept in.
When Lee Lim killed his brother, he was happy to prove that Lee Ho was weaker than him.
Gon was commended as a little genius, and this is the only measure by which Lee Lim thinks he might be better than his father. That doesn’t change the fact that Lee Lim still has to kill him, though.
Even in that horrible moment, and despite Gon being seven years old internationally, he was actively thinking about strategy, wanting to strike Lee Lim with the Four Tiger Sword while he was laughing, because it was a moment of weakness.
Lee Lim got his royal title when he was thirteen, Korean age, so presumably he was 11/12 years old internationally.
The first time little Gon heard the flute music was when his saviour came for him, not before, which begs the question as to why he went to Cheonjongo that night in the first place. Maybe because his dad wanted to show him the Manpasikjeok?
This “Golden Army” section of the Royal Guard existed, at least in 1994. Maybe it still does in the present. Maybe it doesn’t. That remains to be seen.
The official story was that Royal Guards shot Lee Lim dead on the beach, not that he was found washed up dead like I assumed in the show. Maybe this was just a detail in the show that I forgot about, but I’m including it here because it confused me at first.
Lee Lim’s “death” had always seemed futile and meaningless to Gon.
Apparently, according to Gon, all the fear, grief, and hurt has already faded away from that night with time, and the only thing he still has is the question of why his saviour hasn’t come back for him. Apparently.
Please imagine a strained voice for this next point: Jeong Taeeul’s ID card became Gon’s reason for living. *sigh.*
This is something I’d noticed before, but this whole scene where he looks at the ID card in his book, and everything in the show immediately preceding it that the book cut - this all happens on 10th September 2019. Is there a significance to this date? YES! THERE IS! IT’S YEONG’S BIRTHDAY! THEY CUT OUT YEONG’S SCENE ON HIS GODDAMN BIRTHDAY!!!!!!
The Royal Guard was on high alert after the shooting at the rowing competition, and yet Gon still managed to escape? He’s quite impressive.
The main reason Gon was suspicious that Lee Lim wasn’t dead, despite them having a corpse, was because Lee Lim risked everything to get the Manpasikjeok, but his half wasn’t found on this corpse. This is what Gon is thinking about as he’s looking at the portal for the first time.
As Gon is riding through the place in between, in the portal dimension, he’s thinking of the passage of Alice in Wonderland that he read to the children a few days ago, of Alice following the clock rabbit into the rabbit hole, and then falling further and further down.
And that’s it! I’m… actually surprised at how long this ended up being, because I definitely found the first chapter a lot more entertaining than this one. Though to be honest, that was mostly the shameless Gon worshipping. There was definitely some of that this chapter, but not at all to the same extent. Next time… I haven’t really looked very hard at the next chapter, but I think it’s going to cover Taeeul and Gon’s first meeting, from their very first interaction to Gon’s time in the police station. And now I say that, I’m suddenly realising that I’m quite excited to find out what Gon is thinking when he sees Eunseob for the first time. But not too excited. I don’t think it’s wise to have expectations that are too high with this book.
Final thoughts? Underwhelming. I know this book can’t deviate much from the show, but I was disappointed with how little extra information we learnt about Lee Lim in the Cheonjongo scene. Does he really just want *gestures vaguely* power? Is it really just because he feels it’s unfair that he wasn’t born to be the king? Come on, where’s the flavour? Does he want to be more powerful than God because he just wants power? Does he want to rule Corea? Does he want to rule the world? The multiverse??? What is his endgame here??? He gets the Manpasikjeok, then what??? I was hoping that the book would give us some more insight, but it absolutely has not done that so far. Ah well. I suppose it’s only Chapter 2. There’s still time.
Other than that, my main takeaway is that Lee Gon is taking a long, long swim in a certain river in Egypt in regards to how he’s Totally Fine And Ok after the night of the treason. Did he ever get therapy after that night? If so, his therapist didn’t do a very good job if he still thinks that he can’t tell his loved ones about his “weak” feelings because he’s the king. If he didn’t get therapy, then I want to have serious words with whoever looked at this child who just saw his father murdered and almost got murdered himself, and decided “yeah, he’ll probably be ok.”
But of course, he’s fine! It’s below the king to have these so-called “mental health struggles.”

above, a horse above all other horses, save, perhaps, Shadowfax
Subjects of the Kingdom, Citizens of the Republic, and (as always) Gentle Readers, welcome to the FINAL SADDLE POST wrt The King: Eternal Monarch, b/c like Lieutenant Jeong Tae-Eul, I’ve closed this (now) cold case with some diligent research and hard (photographic) evidence
Full disclosure: I am a pre-teen girl obsessed with horses. I am a woman older than @reblogginhood but younger than Miss Fisher obsessed with TKEM.
Get Up to Speed on what the heck I’m posting about:
8 months old Original post
5 months ago Follow-up Post: You might think, Citizen of the Republic and Subjects of the Kingdom, that I had completed both my fangirling and my obsession with Maximus’ double saddle.
You would be wrong.
In fact, in my subsequent re-watches, I’ve actually taken MORE terrible-quality screenshots.
Today’s post: I bring you more terrible-quality screenshots--no, not even screenshots--but actual PHOTOGRAPHS taken of paused screens (b/c Netflix is rude wrt screenshotting)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
...and there you have it, w/o a doubt showing (in the liminal space where Lee Gon bids Jeong Tae-Eul farewell right after her trip to the Kingdom and right before the naval showdown w/ Japan) the double saddle with its own stirrups. It’s beautiful and wholly unique, and I salute Maximus (IRL Benjamin) for wearing it best and putting up with all the flappy frou-frou of this particular get-up so that we might have the pleasure of seeing him in it.
Now, try not to let it disturb your sleep by trying to come up with an in-world explanation why Lee Gon would have been able to conjure such a saddle between JTE’s courtyard in the Republic and the bamboo forest of his obelisks.

THE KING: ETERNAL MONARCH EP 5, My Appreciation and How It Made Me Feel
This going to be a hell long writings because this have been my most anticipated episode.
King is in Korea again finally. To pay his debt to Nari and take away tae eul. I enjoy the aesthetic shot and camera movements. 1 thing that was interesting, Nari write down “She’s Gone” on the board to inform people that Maximus was not here anymore. But seeing KSJ looking at it, it kind of tells him that Tae Eul is gone too. I love the analogy.
Tumblr media
Because she is now in Corea with Gon and pretty much took Lady Noh and Jo Yeong by surprise. We got an explanation of the space between 1 and 0. I love how they called it that. And also i remember during Marvel’s end game im looking so much stuff of quantum mechanic, just curious about the quantum realm that helps them to go through time and space. That is why im excited to see it in this series too. They are using Quantum Tunelling theory same as end game. This space in between world has a rule and its different in every movie, what similar to end game was time flow differently. In TKEM 1 minute here equal to 1 hour outside. There were no wind, no air and no light here. Gon tells us that he was exploring this place for days and using euler’s number to count, which led many people to make their own theories and i love to read it ! I love this fandom, you smart geek 💕 and what makes me love Gon even more, here he shows that he was not greedy to found out more about the place, Since at least in the meantime he only need to know how to back and forth between Korea and Corea. Usually people who love science will have this greed to explore more, but Gon seems to know his priority and will explore later when needed. I love realistic boy 💕 They got critiziced badly for the bad cinematography, and im glad they listen to it and make it better and darker later in the series. But for me, this pinkish is fine.
Tumblr media
The next scene was hilarious, we got to see JTE trying to figure out what is going on and try to prove many things in her way. Nicely executed. And i might say, that JTE is the main character of this episode, because we will saw her character development here and damn great acting by KGE. Im a fan now. Also i will always praised Jo Yeong. He is a very good actor. JY realized that JTE is this woman that Gon has been looking for his entire life.
Tumblr media
Just wanted to appreciate more of the backsound used in this particular scene, Fantasia from Another Dimension. All praised for whoever make it and know exactly where to used it in which scene. Because it added the value of the scene and the series. Also to Gon appereance. Here, especially when Gon says “Welcome to my palace” . I mean, wow.
Tumblr media
Lady Noh pissed and being overprotective to Gon. But its understandable. Now its JTE turn to be a stranger with no identity. As she said “You reap what you sow” . I appreciate Lady Noh professionalism here, eventhough she is a close person to Gon, but Gon is still a King here. There still boundaries and she knows that line and never crossing it. I adore this line of her to JTE “I should trust you, You’re my King’s guest” and bow. 👏🏼👏🏼 also i love how she scolded Gon. And Gon actually obedient to her words. Im soft for them.
Gon’s is back to work and planning to make a meal for JTE, which startled the hell out of SA and JY. Btw, both JY and SA should date because they were cute af. We only got to see a little of both, i want more 🥺
Tumblr media
Just to appreciate the parallel scene as what we saw in episode 1, where JTE saw money with Gon face and teased him about it being monopoly money and teased him whether he buys many land. Here we saw Gon teased her upon seeing her hands in a red stamp and asking “did you sign a contract or something? Did you buy a land?” I just loved it. I also like on how JTE is still pretty much relax around Gon even when she knows he is a King. She casually asking his phone left unlocked for her to search something later. I think Gon’s line here was funny “who would even try to look through a King’s phone? No passcode” 🤣 Their bickering also funny. Gon expecting JTE appreciate the food he is making but JTE teased him by saying it taste bad, and how Gon look at JTE while she eat, is love, i love them, somebody help me. What i also realized here is that Gon also really relax when he is with JTE, he can be himself around her. He let go his upright posture, for example, we can see from his sitting posture, he is leaning to the chair unbothered. But when Lady Noh bark into the room he is back to his stiff posture.
Tumblr media
Appreciation for this line “Is it far to the right or to the left of my room?” Gon’s smirk and Lady Noh’s face 🤣
Tumblr media
The conversation between JTE and Lady Noh’s was quite bitter. She answer JTE question about how people here knows her, she explain that King has a strange ID with your name and face but it looks fake because no one in this world have this identity as stated on the ID card. “But that nonexistent person, suddenly appeared here. Its shocking. Everything is just absurd, but one thing im sure about. An existence that cannot be explained will only bring chaos to the world, and it will only harm our King” Lady Noh’s told JTE not to be curious about this world and not try to stay, she says “By “this world”, i mean, including, the King” im amazed by this line and how this Lady say it. Bitter truth. She is just being protective to the King.
Tumblr media
JTE seems to think about Lady Noh’s words so much and bothered by it. I think she kinda wants to go home because he asked Gon when he will show her ID card. This conversation between Gon and JTE also gave us a glimpse of what a bad shooter Gon was. And led to us confusion and for me personally this led to me doubting many things of Gon savior on 1994 🤡 This bedroom scene was intense though, those who said both of them dont have chemistry better do an eye check or maybe somethings wrong with your heart, because the tension here was high, i mean their line here was iconic af
JTE “내가 뭐 하나 물어불 테니까 ‘예’, ‘아니요’로만 대답해” (im going to ask you something, so just answer with yes or no)
Gon “물어봐” (ask me)
JTE “연애 한 번도 안 해 봤지?” (You’ve never dated before, right?)
Gon “깜짝이야, 아닌데? 해 봤는데” (you startled me, you wrong, i have)
JTE “언제 해 봤는지 맞혀 불까?” (Should i guess when?)
Gon “맞혀 봐” (guess)
JTE “지금” (now)
And the music stop before Gon come closer to JTE and KISS HER SO SOFT then the piano continues to play, IM DEAD!
Tumblr media
I love how JTE startled and open her eyes to analized what is happening and kind of give me a sight of her being curious in this whole new experience even the kiss. I love her acting!
Gon “내가 방금 뭘 증명했는지도 맞혀 봐. 연애해 본 거? 아니면, 지금 연애하는 거?” (Try guessing what i just proved. The fact that i’ve dated before? Or that im dating right now?” 💕
I still very mad that i dont get this piano backsound in the original ost! Why!!!! This piano play is everything and added the tension of this scene.
I dont know what else happens last night but Gon came to JTE room and said “I told you to sleep well but i guess you didn’t” 🤓 he has a plan to bring JTE out by pretending to be his bodyguard for a day slash wants to show off to his girlfriend that he is cool at work 😎 Lady Noh’s is such a party pooper however she dont have any choice but to let this weird King do his plan 💕
Tumblr media
NO PICTURE TOGETHER 🤣
To be continue..

Gentle Readers, living in the heart of our county’s horse farms--this takes up A LOT of our time in the car...but still we persist with all diligence
Please prepare yourself for an update post that contains more than a fair amount of commentary about tack and The King: Eternal Monarch.
Tumblr media
This is a follow-up to the post “I am a pre-teen girl obsessed with horses”
You may recall that the pre-teen part...I lost some time ago.
Update #1: My neighbors, who own the boarding stable and show barn, sold their property! (It’s literally been on the market off and on ever since I moved to Chez Nell). This is TERRIBLY exciting, b/c the sellers had sort of reached their ceiling of what they could reasonably continue to afford to maintain and add-on to the property (for example, they had never managed to swing installing any kind of A/C in the massive show barn), and the property was bought by what seems to be some AMAZING folks with the following bona fides (to start): a CHA Certified Instructor w/ 25 years experience teaching, and it will be a USPC Certified Riding Center! The new owner graduated from Foxcroft and is a Certified Horsemanship Association (CHA) Level 4 (Master) English/Jumping Instructor and CHA Level 3 Western Instructor.
To stop spouting qualifications: I am VERY excited. I am near enough to walk to this facility. Little Cap shall see himself enrolled directly!
Update #2: You might think, Citizen of the Republic and Subjects of the Kingdom, that I had completed both my fangirling and my obsession with Maximus’ double saddle.
You would be wrong.
In fact, in my subsequent re-watches, I’ve actually taken MORE terrible-quality screenshots.
The lovely and horse-alert @lafseanchai had suggested what was in-use on the show for JTE might have been a sort of “cheater” stirrup.
Tumblr media
(an example, this one to accommodate a child rider behind the adult) (there is also a version that hangs from the saddle horn in front)
Tumblr media
To refresh our minds: double stirrups above and below
Tumblr media
Below are some further images I managed to find (some from BTS videos):
If “cheaters” are used, they are to the front of the existing pair, but were not hung from the horn. This amazing saddle has enough hooks and latches to work for California Closet, so affixing them elsewhere would be no challenge.
Tumblr media
Blurry picture, hoping it might show something more to someone else than it does to me--
Tumblr media
Seems to show an added seat behind the cantle, a second cantle, if you will, draped over in a matching white.
Tumblr media
The crudely done outline (by me) shows the ornamented pommel, standard cantle, and again, what seems to be a second cantle (presumably so that Lee Min Ho wasn’t seated to ride on the back edge of the saddle/the horse’s bare back)
Tumblr media
This saddle is so amazingly ornate--I’m not even sure what I’m seeing here in the area of where JTE’s front stirrups would have attached. The saddle top even better reveals the “second cantle”. But the straps in front of the visible stirrup--could they be for JTE’s stirrups?
Tumblr media
Here, the saddle (before the alterations made for double riding) in shot when Lee Gon is going to lift Tae-Eul up. Single set of stirrups, one seat, two cinches. Isn’t she a pretty saddle?
Tumblr media
Interestingly (to me) the BTS footage reveals definitively that Lee Gon DID ask Tae-Eul if she’d ever ridden/sat a horse before. It WAS in the script.
Tumblr media
You cannot expect me to end this post without showing this shot of HOW Lee Gon was able to lift JTE so high like a feather and sit her on Maximus in the graceful, effortless way he did. [He was lifting her to at least the height of his own shoulder, and his hold on her looked minimal) Thanks for the beautiful scene, TKEM--and thanks, too, for revealing the truth behind the fictional lie!
