TJ was shaking. He could hear the ice in his drink tinkling against the glass when he brought it to his lips as he struggled to get himself under control.

But he couldn’t, and it was all Andy’s fault.

When You’re the Best of Friends

Lying in bed and listening to T.J. play Prelude and Fugue you can’t help but think back on your tumultuous relationship.  It has had its ups and downs for sure.  From the moment you fell in love with him at fifteen.  To the moment you lost your virginity together, and you knew then you weren’t the person he wanted to be with.  You two cried all night when he told you he was gay.  Not because you were sad that he didn’t want to be with you, but because you were hurt, he couldn’t trust you with that part of his life.

You would have done anything for you sweet T.J. and still would.  He truly is your best friend, each other's platonic soul mates.  The amount of times you have cried over different boys is ridiculous, but at the end of the day, you know that we have each other.

As soon as you walk out of the bedroom T.J. spots you, smiling his tired smile, but continues to play his piece.  You shuffle your feet over to the piano, his body scooting over to give you room on the bench, and you lean over on his bare shoulder.  The contact of his skin warm and soft on your cheek.  Reaching up your hand to add random notes to his piece.  He leans over to offer a quick kiss on your messy hair.

“You know, your bed head is really cute, sweet girl.”

Leaning over, you offer him a soft shrug to his shoulder, “And you are ridiculously sweet when you’re half asleep.”

The living room settles into a soft silence.  His playing continues, and you feel yourself drifting.  Your head droops over his shoulder quickly, and you jump back at the sudden movement.

“Go back to bed,” T.J.’s voice softly whispers.

“’M too comfortable right here.”  His playing changes to Braham’s Lullaby.  He knows even now that the lullaby gets you.  “You’re not playing fair.”

“And you’re sleepy.  Go to bed.”

You don’t answer.  Just listen to his lithe fingers softly play the sweet tune, your voice humming quietly along.  “T.J.?”

“Hmm?”

“Would it be alright if I grabbed one of your sweaters to sleep in?  They always smell like you.  And you comfort me.”

“Of course.  Go pick you out one,” you offer him a sweet kiss to his cheek, dragging your legs towards his room.  “Just stay in there sweet girl.  We can watch a movie and cuddle, that sound, okay?”

“Seriously?” you ask turning to smile at him.  He nods his head.  “Any movie?”

“Yeah, even The Fox and the Hound.”

There’s more pep to your step as you walk into his room, picking out one of his sweaters and smelling his clean and yet sweet masculine cologne.  Settling in on his perfectly fluffy bed surrounded in the best pillows.  Watching his figure walk into the room.  You two may just be friends, but there’s no denying how much you truly love one another.

Lotus

For @redhead-wine-and-literature-club Love In Bloom Challenge - today's flower is Lotus which represents rebirth, self-regeneration, enlightenment.

During the holiday challenges I wrote for in December, I had a couple of platonic!reader x TJ drabbles, in particular this one, with a recovering TJ. Think of this as a prequel 💓

Warnings: alcoholism/drug abuse/overdose alluded to but not portrayed, language, angst - my blogs are 18+ spaces always.

"Can I stay with you?"

You close your eyes and take a deep breath before you answer. "What about your mom?"

"She's okay with it. She just doesn't want me alone."

The beeping of the machines, the tubes and the wires and your sweet boy, pale against the stark white of the hospital bed. TJ opens his eyes, tries to smile at you. "Hey, cutie."

Your face is braver and your voice is steadier than you feel. "Hi, handsome."

"Teej," you start, unshed tears pinching your voice in your throat. "I'm not gonna stand for any of that stuff in my house, do you understand? I'm not your getaway car."

"I swear to you, I'm clean. I just need a change... I need you."

There's silence on the phone line except for a few deep breaths from you, wet and heavy with the tears that have started to roll.

"Okay, handsome. I'll come pick you up."

Sitting next to the bed, his hand in yours, you listen as he tells you what happened. "I didn't do this on purpose, you have to believe me."

"Of course I believe you, TJ."

More tears slip from his eyes. "I'm always gonna be fucking up. I'm never gonna do better."

He's silent, staring at the ceiling, and you dig deep for a memory to break through to him. "Do you remember that school trip to the botanical garden?" You give him a moment to answer and when he doesn't, you forge ahead. "Remember the lotus flowers? How they bloom every morning? Remember that story about the two thousand year old seed that just needed some water, and it grew?"

His head rolls towards you on the pillow, and you smile when you catch his eye. "Let us give you some water, little lotus seed, and help you grow."

TJ's face softens, and he squeezes your hand.

He puts his bag in the backseat, and you wait for him to have his seat belt fastened before you drive away from his mom's house.

"What do you want to do tonight?"

TJ smiles at you when you glance over. "Pizza? Popcorn?"

"Sure. And any movie you want."

At the next red light, you reach your hand over and link your fingers with his. Your little lotus seed needs to be watered, and you'll be there when he blooms.
