TJ manages to avoid Andy for a month before the older man tracks him down without Dougie, Anne or his parents around. They circled the wagons when they found out about his relationship with Andy and of Andy's wife. For once in his life, TJ was grateful for their overprotectiveness. However, Andy still finds a way to see him without his protectors. He tells him he divorced his wife years ago. The paparazzi lied about them still being married. He says he loves TJ. He sounds like he means it.

TJ has a meeting with Andy (his lawyer) to discuss a case and he didn’t expect he’d run into the case itself ....

so I finally read chapter 2 of Beyond a Reasonable Doubt and this post was inspired by it 🙈 (and ps: that’s Andy’s assistant 😂 he’s not married in this universe)

He shouldn't be here. He should be home. He raises his hand to knock on a very forbidden door. The door opens & TJ doesn't seem surprised to see him standing there. He can't speak but TJ understands anyway & allows him inside. They stare at each other before Andy surges forward & pulls the younger man in for a kiss that starts off sweet and gentle then morphs into tongue and teeth and bruising fingers. He can't stop & TJ doesn't seem to mind, holding him just as tightly. He can't stop. He won't.

He thought watching TJ dancing was a religious experience, but he was wrong. Seeing TJ play the piano, his eyes closed while his fingers dance over the keys, a contented smile on his face - nothing on this Earth could've prepared Andy for a truly relaxed TJ Hammond. Douglas & Anne dance a waltz to whatever TJ's playing. (He's not a classical music fan, okay?) Other guests follow their lead & dance while the room quiets in response to the rare sight in front of them. TJ smiles at him & he melts.

2/3 A kiss, a pseudo-private concert, ignoring the hundred other guests at the party, TJ’s gaze would find his whenever he opened his eyes & he would give the sweetest smile Andy has ever seen on someone in their 30s to him. It takes everything in him not to stride forward & pull the younger man in for a kiss in front of his powerful family & the wealthy and connected party guests. Desire & caution wage a silent war in his body but common sense fights its way through & he stays put. He smiles back.

3/3 TJ is smiling at him, an almost sultry smirk from the corner of the room. Douglas by his side as always, actually laughing with genuine abandon, a rare sight indeed, and TJ’s coquettish smile turns soft when he looks at his brother. They whisper to each other & break out in more laughter, their mother turns in their direction, a frown on her face that is replaced by fondness. Another sign that the Hammond-Barrish family is healing. TJ looks back to Andy, those stormy eyes piercing and promising.

Andy returns to TJ again and again; addicted to the younger man's taste and touch, the way he moans at Andy's strength, giving up control easily. Those stormy eyes stare up at him as if he was the key to the Universe, and those talented fingers cling to Andy as if he'll never let him go. Their kisses start off soft and gentle but quickly escalate to possessive and claiming. Their clothes disappear, losing themselves in touch-starved whimpers & moans while Andy whispers promises into pliant skin.

2/2 TJ writes imaginary love letters on Andy's back, sealing them with a kiss. Happiness buzzes through his veins, his body aching pleasantly from their earlier activity. He feels content laying next to the older man, listening to him snoring softly, oddly domestic. He can get used to this. Not sleeping alone. Andy makes him feel safe & strong. Andy being w/him is proof he's no longer the Hammond fuck up. He's a good man, smart & kind & loving. TJ wants to tell Dougie, let him know about him & Andy.

Anne Hammond is fucking terrifying. Not as terrifying as Secretary Barrish, but holy shit is it close. Douglas must have said something to her about his apparently transparent feelings toward the former First Son because her glares are worse than her husband's. Her words sharp and biting under the polite veneer of small talk. Andy thought Anne didn't like TJ but that is quite quickly remedied during his meeting with the young political couple. The message is clear: Back off.

2/2 Okay, TJ can handle Dougie going all mother hen on him, but Anne, too? Plus their mother? Christ. It’s just a flirtation. Let him have some fun, dammit. It’s harmless and it won’t trigger any relapses. They’re overreacting really. One kiss, not that they know that, & several weeks worth of awkward flirting does not make a relationship. A bond maybe, but nothing deeper than that. Hell, he watched the older man dance w/this drop dead gorgeous woman & felt not a hint of jealousy. Not a bit. (Liar.)

Andy Barber just left his brother's house looking less than put together. The fucker is also wearing TJ's clothes. How does he know this? He fucking bought the sweater Barber is currently slinking off in. What does he do? Tell their mother? Anne? Dad? All very bad ideas. Those are nuclear options, a last resort, but fuck does he want to. They'll know what to do. But the question of what they choose to do would be good for TJ. Whether he likes it or not, Barber makes his brother happy... Fuck.

Douglas FaceTime's him, interrupting a very relaxing nap tucked protectively under Andy's comforting weight. He has to wriggle a bit to reach his phone and answer Douglas's call. His twin is livid. TJ hasn't seen Dougie this mad in a long, long time. It worries him enough to sneak out of the room so they can talk uninterrupted. His twin starts yelling about Andy being a fucking liar, that their mother knows about them, and telling TJ Andy has a wife in Massachusetts. He turns cold.

2/2 He’s just like Sean. The thought repeats over and over in his head. He’s not any different than his cruel ex. TJ is another secret to be kept in the closet. He can faintly near Dougie’s worried voice. Is Dougie here? Where is he? He needs him. “Dougie,” is all he says, and Douglas promises he’ll be right there. He’s already on his way. The words are comforting but they don’t chase away the cold sinking into his bones. He can’t go back into the room. Andy’s in there sleeping, looking so perfect.

Andy goes to Douglas after seeing TJ. He has little hope that the man will listen to anything he says but he's got to try and explain. He married his high school sweetheart for twelve years but in the end, they weren't what the other needed anymore. He still cares about her, of course he does, and Laurie found someone else to love. He found TJ. He loves him. More than he's loved anyone in his life, including Laurie. Douglas HAS to understand. TJ's twin greets him with a left hook to the face.

2/2 Douglas has a surprisingly strong punch. Andy can't remember a time where a single hit almost sent him to the ground. He reigns in his anger, forces himself not to retaliate. If he doesn't settle things between him and Douglas, it won't matter if he gets TJ back, his brother would whisper poison in his ears, make TJ doubt him. All he's asking is for a chance to get TJ back and not have Douglas or Anne interfere. He did not cheat nor did he lie. Laurie is his past. He wants TJ to be his future.

OoOOoooOoH no Dougie you didn’t 😵 poor Andy 😭 damn! it’s getting good! I can imagine their conversation, Douglas loosing his shit and Andy trying to stay calm for TJ’s sake 🙈

Andy says he loves him. TJ wants to believe him so badly, his heart screaming at him to say it back and forget the whole wife thing, but he can't. He's not that guy anymore. He's not going to be another dirty secret for a man with a rising career. TJ ignores the little voice in his head telling him Andy took him to Hawaii, no obfuscation there - that TJ is the one who wanted to keep their relationship a secret and not Andy. Can anyone blame him for overreacting though? Sean left him broken.

2/2 The jagged pieces Sean left behind when he broke TJ are a constant reminder to be careful with his heart. Andy saying he loves him helped smooth the sharp edges that liked to dig into his chest whenever he thought he was Good Enough, as if reminding him he's not, that he'll never be. But being wrapped in Andy's arms kept the darkness and cold away, and the soft, trailing kisses suffused a heat in him that wouldn't fade. He wraps himself in one of Andy's old shirts, wishing it was the older man.

He runs. TJ runs as fast as he can. He has no idea where he's going, but he just needs to get away NOW. People shout angrily after him when he bumps into them trying to put as much distance between him and Andy as he could. His phone rings and he sees Andy's name pop up. He ignores it. Andy keeps calling and sending increasingly worried texts. He loses track of time, walking around in a daze. It's a miracle no one robs him or runs him over. Tears fall, and familiar arms wrap around him. Douglas.

2/2 Douglas bundles him home. He doesn't see Andy at all. Dougie takes his phone away and shuts it off before holding TJ tight. TJ unashamedly snuggles into his brother's arms, seeking shelter and comfort. Fuck. He thought he was smarter than this. Stronger. He's 35 fucking years old, he's not that dumb kid anymore. He really thought Andy was different, kind, not a liar, but he's not. He's just like Sean. A wife. Andy has a wife. Dougie holds him tighter, & TJ realizes he hasn't stopped crying.

Douglas looks over numerous files for a potential lawyer for him and TJ. Their success, and becoming the First Sons again, has the spotlight set right on them, never moving, seeing everything. They need protection and legal counsel. It's his job to find a suitable fit for the brothers. Someone they can trust. That's a big ask for a lawyer. There's one name that Douglas keeps going back to: Andy Barber. Recently divorced, successful career and looking for a new job opportunity. He's perfect.

2/2 TJ plucks at his cuffs, fiddling with them in impatience. The photoshoot should have ended three hours ago. He's supposed to be meeting Dougie with their new lawyer for a late lunch before seeing their mother for a family dinner. Instead he's standing by a pool under an umbrella wearing a Hugo Boss suit he might just steal for his own personal collection. Finally the shoot continues & he's able to go change & meet his brother & new lawyer, he's only 30 minutes late. He wonders who Dougie hired.

Andy is strong and kind. He always has a smile for TJ, and he never ignores any of his calls or texts. Dougie tells him to make Andy prove he's worthy of his affections, that he won't pull a Sean. The thought of his ex puts the brakes on any romantic urges he has towards the family lawyer. He doesn't want to get hurt again. So he flirts & accepts gifts that are as thoughtful & kind as the man himself. He makes TJ feel real & present. He makes TJ smile & feel warmth again - he makes TJ feel safe.

2/4 A book. A hideously orange book. That is the gift Barber got for his brother. A birthday gift, the older man says, but Douglas knows better. Odds are the man bought it ages ago and just finally worked up the courage to give it to TJ, and it just so happened to be on their birthday. Happy coincidence. So help him if Barber or his brother use the word "fate" in relation to whatever they have going on between them. Douglas heaves a sigh and slaps on a smile. He has guests to thank for their gifts.

3/4 After dreaming and having inappropriate thoughts about his client, & then having a meeting with TJ about his club issues, Andy's mind is tugging him in two directions: be professional, & for him to pull the younger man in for a kiss. But he can't risk TJ's sobriety, not when he's been doing so well. Their meeting concludes with a solution at hand, & Andy feels good at helping TJ. He gives Andy this look before darting forward & kissing his cheek in thanks. He leaves Andy standing there stunned.

4/4 Dougie is going to kill him. Kill him dead. He just kissed their family lawyer. They have to attend a party in their mother's stead and Andy is there to represent his firm. Jesus fuck is he stupid. Impulsive, Dougie would say before smacking him upside the head for being a dumbass. He can feel Andy's eyes on him the whole time. Dougie glares at their lawyer every time he notices the staring. Both of their actions make him feel safe and cared for, like he's worth protecting. Like he matters.

Andy is not handling this limbo very well. He loses himself in work, focusing on the never ending paperwork and making a dent in his inbox. He works, goes to the gym, and goes home. Rinse and repeat. He misses TJ so damn much. Andy's never felt this kind of heartache before. Never. Putting his trust in Douglas is the hardest thing he's ever had to do. Hell, he's putting his heart in Douglas's hands. He buys a soft blanket for TJ and sends it to him as an I miss you. I love you... Do you miss me?

2/2 TJ snuggles around his new, insanely soft blanket. He knows it's from Andy. The knowledge warms him more than the blanket does. He's had time to think about what happened, he may have overreacted. Dougie too, but he understands why. TJ's doorbell rings. He drags himself out of bed, his new blanket wrapped around him, and opens the door to find Andy standing on his doorstep. TJ doesn't hesitate, he pulls Andy in for a kiss, sighing happily when Andy's arms wrap around him. Safe. Home. Love.
