Throwback to a little tasting of some cool rums and liqueurs from Tasmania’s New Norfolk Distillery (@newnorfolkdistillery) at Coley last week. Tasmania is usually better known for whiskies, but the folks at New Norfolk decided to go with rum instead. Tarrant Derksen founded the distillery in a former mental asylum, and set out to rekindle Australia’s legacy with rum. During the tasting event at Coley, I got to try their core rums and also a range of liqueurs they make. The Misty Valley Silver Spirit is their non-aged rum, and probably my favourite. It has a very fresh, grassy nose and palate that reminds me of Cachaça, and it went REALLY well with a daiquiri. The Drone Riot is a 60% ABV overproof rum that is done in the style of a Jamaican rum, (there was a slight funk in the nose an entry that reminded me of many Jamaican rums). It is also fermented with wild yeast, which contributes to that funky note. Taste-wise, it reminded me a bit of Wray & Nephew overproof rum, but with a bit more bite to it. There was also Near Horizon spiced rum (very Christmassy and full of cinnamon), and several liqueurs – Von Vader Dutch Cookie (inspired by a traditional Dutch sweet) and Mos Lamington (based on Australia’s ‘national sweet) were a tad too sweet for me, but I liked really liked the Martian Sky Coffee Liqueur. Also, there was the Pillar Of Autumn Smoky Maple Old Fashioned Bottled Cocktail, a bottled old fashioned that was more of a liqueur than a cocktail and was really nice tbh. All in all, an interesting range. Daily MCO Drink #745: CHAN CHAN, made with 45ml Bacardi Reserva Ocho rum, 10ml St Germain Elderflower liqueur, 10ml Dolin Dry vermouth, 15ml lime juice, 5ml simple syrup, 3 dashes Peychaud’s Bitters, shaken over ice and strained. Rum and elderflower go pretty well together, I must say, and the addition of dry vermouth makes this a bit drier and less sweet. Not bad. Daily MCO Drink #741: ADIOS AMIGOS, made with 30ml Plantation Original Dark Rum, 15ml Remy Martin VSOP cognac, 15ml Hendrick’s Gin, 15ml Cucielo Blanco vermouth, 7.5ml each of lime juice and simple syrup, shaken over ice and strained. Used up my final 15ml of Remy Martin VSOP for this, but it was worth it. It may seem like a lot going on, but everything comes together quite nicely. It’s spirit forward with just enough sour and sweet to bind the different spirits together. Adapted from Victor ‘Trader Vic’ Bergeron's 1972 edition of Trader Vic's Bartender's Guide (1972 revised edition). Trader apparently said of this drink: "You know that adios means good-bye. Daily MCO Drink #736: CAZADOR, made with 60ml Bacardi Reserva Ocho 8YO Rum, 20ml lemon juice, 5ml Giffard Creme de Cassis, 12.5ml maple syrup, shaken over ice and strained. Adapted from George Hunter’s winning cocktail from the 2019 Bacardi Legacy South African final. The original uses lime i stead of lemon, but I like the softer sourness of the lemon with the maple syrup and anise from the absinthe. The healthy hit of rum means it’s never going to be overshadowed too. Daily MCO Drink #727: IMPROVISED NAVY GROG, made with 50ml each of Plantation Original Dark rum and Jameson Itish Whiskey, topped with 50ml 7-Up. Was on a short boat trip today and thpught of making a grog, but I only had the spirit and sweet elements but no sour, so I had to inprovise. As expected, turned out too sweet dor my liking. Daily MCO Drink #711: BACARDI COCKTAIL, made with 60ml Bacardi Ocho rhm, 15ml lime juice, 7.5ml grenadine syrup, 5ml simple syrup, shaken over ice and strained. Was holding off on making this classic vintage cocktail until I actually had some Bacardi. And though the actual recipe uses the light rum, I do like Ocho a lot more. The drink itself is kinda like a daiquiri but with grenadine. Daily MCO Drink #672: CULROSS, made with equal 30ml parts of Nusa Caña rum, Lillet Rosé and Giffard Abricot du Roussillon, 10ml lemon juice, shaken over ice and strained. Hmm this is not the first drink I’ve made that paired Lillet with apricot liqueur. The aromatised wine does go well with fruitier flavours, and here the only complaint I have is the rum is somewhat drowned out. Daily MCO Drink #659: QUEEN’S PARK HOTEL SUPER COCKTAIL, made with 70ml Angostura 5YO Gold run, 5 dashes Angostura Aromatic Bitters, 20ml lime juice, 15ml Dolin Rouge vermouth, 5ml grenadine syrup, 15ml simple syrup, shaken over ice and strained. Adapted from a recipe found in Difford’s Guide which in turn was adapted from 1932 book ‘If Crab No Walk: A Traveller in the West Indies’ by British travel writer Owen Rutter. Also known as a Trinidadian Daiquiri, apparently because it uses so much Angostura bitters. Daily MCO Drink #652: GOLDEN GIRL, made with 45ml Angostura 5YO Gold rum, 30ml Dow’s Ruby Port, 30ml pineapple juice, 7.5ml simple syrup, 1 egg (yolk and white), shaken over ice and strained. RIP Betty White. You’ll always be TV’s Golden Girl. Adapted from a recipe by Dale DeGroff, the original recipe uses tawny port instead of ruby, the result being a more pinkish rose tinge than golden. Which is appropriate, since Betty White was Rose on Golden Girls. Daily MCO Drink #644: SNOWBALL, made with 50ml homemade advocaat, 22.5ml lime juice, built in a ice filled glass and topped with East Imperial Yuzu Lemonade. Merry Christmas! Made my own advocaat for this round of Chirstmas drinks. Instead of the usual brandy, I used 100ml Bundaberg OP rum with 4 egg yolks, sugar, vanilla essence and cinnamon powder. Turned out quite ok I have to say. The Snowball is a popular Christmas drink in the UK, and according to Difford’s Guide, thought to have originated in Britain during the late 1940s or early 1950s. Daily MCO Drink #628: BITTER IN BRAZIL, made with 45ml Yaguara Branca Cachaça, 22.5ml Cointreau, 22.5ml Eiling Lim Private Selection “Shun” Single Cask sweet vermouth from La Cuesta, 1 barspoon simple syrup, 1 barspoon Fernet Branca, stirred over ice and strained over fresh ice block from @isipadu_icecompany. I haven’t had many cachaça drinks I didn’t like, and this one is another winner for me.
