Where winds and waves reign: Situated on a small, rocky island beyond the tip of India, the Vivekananda Rock Memorial from Kanyakumari is a shrine bricked to life in 1970, in commemoration of the Swami Vivekananda's attainment of enlightenment, during his meditation here for three continuous days. Vivekananda went on to become a visionary and a powerful orator in his life, representing his nation and his religion on many fronts, also advocating youth's role in aiding the needy and serving the poor. Once you get here by boat from the coast of Kanyakumari, you will understand how serene and pristine this place was and still remains, and how it could be the perfect platform for some self-reflection and introspection. I would advise visiting this place on a public-working day to have the least of crowds. And if you manage to isolate yourself from the clicking and the chatting of tourists, you can truly immerse yourself in the spirit of this place. Listen long enough and you will hear the song of the heavy waves and how they dance with the lighter winds visiting from the South/South-West. Crashing waves around the boulder ridden island offer a spectacle a minute. This memorial also houses a shrine - Sripada Mandapam that houses the acclaimed footprints of the goddess Kumari in rock. And what is perhaps the tallest monument in memory of a poet, bounds this memorial on the west; the Thiruvalluvar Statue, which I will be talking about in another post. An ode to poetry: What came as a very welcome delight when I was touring the shores of Tamilnadu, late this July, was this statue of Thiruvalluvar, commonly known as Valluvar, who was a celebrated Tamil poet and philosopher, from 1st century BC or 6th century AD; best known for authoring the Thirukkuṛaḷ, a collection of couplets on ethics, political & economical matters, & love. The text is considered the greatest work of the Tamil literature & one of the finest works on ethics & morality. And this is the tallest statue erected in memory of a poet, that I could find from a quick research. I don't know if commeners are permitted there regularly but from what I learned from the local staff of the Ferry Point and the Vivekananda Memorial was that it wasn't. I would've loved to have experienced a closer view but just the fact that this exists was elation enough. To celebrate art and petty at that, for centuries to have lasted in memory and for millennia more to last, cast in stone, in itself is pure joy and this piece, sculpted by Ganapathi Sthapathi was unveiled at the turn of the millennium, 2000 too! And just like I have described in my post from 13th August, this place is a close neighbor of the Vivekananda Memorial, anchored in the Indian Ocean, right off India's southern tip, swimming in the thunders of crashing waves, from rocks that this was built on. Fishing Communities of India: What you're seeing here is one of the densest domestic tourism hubs of India, roping in hundreds to thousands of visitors per day. This is the Tip of India, Kanyakumari, bound by water on most of its boundary, and fishing industry flourishes almost all round the year, every year, with an ocean and two seas meeting up here. Yet, these fishing communities, even today, remain poor, under developed, and frankly, uncared for, except for disaster reliefs or annual financial allocations. Despote being situated on banks of thriving tourist attractions like the Thiruvalluvar Statue, the Vivekananda Memorial or the ThriveniSangam, not mentioning that it is the tip of India, the southern most part of this peninsula where fisheries and industrial fishing corporations sprang up decades ago, these communities remain neglected. Boats that are decades old, rusty and almost definitely not up to safety standards are tripped for their daily wares. Chatting with the locals, you'll learn that most live in low lying areas, that run a high risk of flooding often.
