Where winds and waves reign: Situated on a small, rocky island beyond the tip of India, the Vivekananda Rock Memorial from Kanyakumari is a shrine bricked to life in 1970, in commemoration of the Swami Vivekananda's attainment of enlightenment, during his meditation here for three continuous days. Vivekananda went on to become a visionary and a powerful orator in his life, representing his nation and his religion on many fronts, also advocating youth's role in aiding the needy and serving the poor. Once you get here by boat from the coast of Kanyakumari, you will understand how serene and pristine this place was and still remains, and how it could be the perfect platform for some self-reflection and introspection. I would advise visiting this place on a public-working day to have the least of crowds. And if you manage to isolate yourself from the clicking and the chatting of tourists, you can truly immerse yourself in the spirit of this place. Listen long enough and you will hear the song of the heavy waves and how they dance with the lighter winds visiting from the South/South-West. Crashing waves around the boulder ridden island offer a spectacle a minute. This memorial also houses a shrine - Sripada Mandapam that houses the acclaimed footprints of the goddess Kumari in rock. And what is perhaps the tallest monument in memory of a poet, bounds this memorial on the west; the Thiruvalluvar Statue, which I will be talking about in another post. Mathoor Aqueduct or Mathoor Hanging Trough, is an aqueduct  in southern india , in the kalkulam taluk of kanyakumari district tof  Tamil nadu state. Built over the pahrali river  (also called Parazhiyar), it takes its name from Mathoor, a hamlet near the aqueduct, which is about 3 kilometres from thiruvattar town and about 60 km from Kanyakumari, the southernmost town of India. Mosaics: India is a perfect example of how cultures, faiths, and their architectural lives can be influenced, morphed, and even birthed, colliding with existing systems, invasive ones, both docile and aggressive, and newborn counterparts too, propelled by time and time alone, through aeons and generations. For this particular post, let's reflect a little about architectural impact. What you see in his picture is amalgamation of religious structures of South India. If you've been to southern part of the subcontinent, you'll have noticed that most, if not all, hindu temples have a tall flag mast or Dhwaja-Sthambham erected besides the main temple. This was once, and rarely still is, used as a flagmast for rites and ceremonies, and is claimed to have scientific purpose of acting as a lightning arrester. This statue that we see here is mounted on top of exactly the same kind of mast, that is disjoint from the main shrine structure but is connected. This is a common sight with Churches of Kerala and Southern Tamilnadu, and mostly associated with Syrian Christian Shrines that have visible influences from Jewish and Hindu architecture here, signifying that peaceful and harmonious coexistence is not a fool's dream, even in the aftermath of colonial division between the natives where religion was wielded as a separatist's dream weapon. On a side note, notice the symmetry in the frame.
