To add on to that : there's definitely violence in translation, but in another way, for example in a context of colonisation or cultural hegemony. For example, translating from an endangered language into a very popular can help make the first one disappear. Tiphaine Samoyault talks about it in her wonderful book "Traduction et violence" if ya'll want to check that out <333
its been a few weeks its time to bitch about this take i saw in my notes

[id: tags that read "an act of translation is an act of betrayal" "translation means doing violence upon the original" "unless its emily wilson doing it " "hope that helps" /end id]
this pisses me off SO MUCH. what the fuck are you talking about violence. its an act of intimacy, an act of love, an act of devotion. thats literally what the original post is ABOUT (a quote by dr. wilson about her feeling like translation feels religious to her).
AND the way this person frames 'the original' as something that is pristine, something inherently superior to the translation. 'ohhh the translation will never be as good as the original' And The Original Will Never Be As Good As The Translation. rejoice in the act of translation, rejoice in transformation and interpretation and love and care

Tiphaine Samoyault – Roland Barthes (2022)
Tiphaine Samoyault – Roland Barthes (2022)
Edebiyat teorisyeni, filozof, dilbilimci, eleƟtirmen ve göstergebilimci Roland Barthes (1915-1980), döneminin dĂŒĆŸĂŒnce dĂŒnyasına damgasını vurmuƟ isimlerden biri. Kendi “anti-otobiyografi”sini kaleme almÄ±ĆŸ, “yazarın ölĂŒmĂŒâ€ tezini ortaya atmÄ±ĆŸ Barthes’ın biyografisini yazmak hiç ĆŸĂŒphesiz kolay değil. “Were I a writer, and dead, how I would love it if my life, through the pains of some friendly and detached biographer, were to reduce itself to a few details, a few preferences, a few inflections, let us say: to ‘biographemes’ whose distinction and mobility might go beyond any fate and come to touch, like Epicurean atoms, some future body, destined to the same dispersion.” --Roland Barthes, quoted in Tiphaine Samoyault, Barthes: A Biography

4 juin 2017
