i think probably my fave on tslocg is leighton, because how can i not love the closeted baby lesbian who's a little mean to people largely because of what she's hiding but under all that is really kind

character opinion bingo!

this one’s for the aging tumblr userbase: what’s your least favorite bit of corporate jargon? not the worst corporate concept, just the particular string of PowerPoint®️ Presentation words that makes you want to depart your own skin whenever you hear it

ok how are we feeling about the size of this hat... the maxis original on the left, my version on the right. i'm trying to find a decent balance of "that's probably a workable amount of hair clipping" and "my man has a megamind dome"--weirdly more difficult than expected...!

something I’m a little bit frustrated rn with is that id really like to read the discworld series, but its not on Libby or hoopla aside from the ebooks. there’s some on libro fm and a lot on audible but given that it’s a long series, that’s a lot of money that I don’t have. The library doesn’t even have CDs of it 😭😭😭
(I really struggle with reading physical books and ebooks due to my vision)
Edit: there are a few audiobooks from the series on Libby, it seems to just be the color of magic that’s missing

☕️ have easy distribution models (I.e. streaming) been helpful or harmful to cinema?
i think this is a complex issue with an equally complex answer, and i'll attempt to break down some of those complexities at least as i — someone who minored in film in undergrad and has some understanding of the industry, but is not currently working in it — sees it.
there are a couple of huge positives for streaming, and one is access. a wider range of films are now more accessible to more people than ever. this is especially important in an age where major studios like disney hold large sway over what plays at local movie theaters and mid-budget films/independent films are a harder sell for distribution outside of major cities. given that i don't live in a new york, LA, etc., and my local movie theater, while great for showing a wider variety of films, doesn't necessarily show arthouse films, i have personally had access to a lot more from the convenience of my home because of streaming.
furthering my point regarding access, 45-day windows between theatrical release and streaming allow people who cannot go, or choose not to go, to movie theaters access to newer titles. movies on streaming come with built-in closed captioning, too, which still isn't popular in mainstream movie theaters, outside of a few special instances; that also only improves access.
streaming also allows an opportunity for projects to be made that major studios might pass on. this is especially a boon to marginalized creators, whose work may not be seen as "profitable" by the suits. streaming operates by that content-driven model, which gets a lot more content out there.
— but it also has its drawbacks.
a lot more content means a whole glut of content, and so these more niche projects that got produced anyway may still get lost in the noise — as media on streaming relies on advertising push and word of mouth to find its audience. there are niche products that will likely never find their audience because they weren't pushed, and then will be buried by much more popular content. where the potential for a wider variety of options is out there, often what still gets made is what appeals to the lowest common denominator, for the sake of numbers.
i think we've also seen that the film industry was wholly unprepared for the rise of streaming, and their business model has still yet to fully catch up to it. as seen with the lawsuit that scarlett johansson brought against the walt disney corporation for the simultaneous release of black widow onto disney plus last summer, many deals for creatives and talent still end up utilizing box office backend, and so you can see studios potentially using that as an opportunity not to pay what these people are owed. we can all roll our eyes about how much money scarjo has (i do, too), but the lawsuit was important for setting a precedent to not screw much more low profile creators out of their fair share of compensation.
finally, as we've seen with the debacle at warner brothers discovery with david zaslav, with whole films being cancelled and being deleted off of hbo max for a "tax write-off", with no physical copies remaining, making our media so wholly reliant on being digital is potentially very scary. as a creator, you could find that, one day, a big corporate ceo on an ego trip deleted your whole work on a whim without notice. that's a nightmare for media preservation, and for our culture as a whole.
so — i think there are both advantages and disadvantages of streaming, and i don't think you can firmly say this has impacted the industry, and cinema as a whole, for better or for worse. i think the only thing you can say is that the landscape has changed now, and it will continue to change.
send me a ☕️ and a topic and i'll talk about how i feel about it!

My Therapist recommended this to me today at the end of our session so I watched it right after. I recommend watch it. It’s very good. Haven’t read the book she recommends (Atomic Habits by James Clear).
TL;DR below the cut 👇
Depression and anxiety symptoms are on a scale.
|None|——————|Mild|——————|Moderate|——————|Severe|
How to improve symptoms:
Tiny, incremental strategies that are easy to implement and do can become habitual. The idea is to make a 1% change every day for a month at a time (can choose a different time frame but this is what she uses) which can lead to a 37% change of energy increase and even improving depression and anxiety symptoms after a year.
Three (3) Principles of Change
Pick the low hanging fruit first — Make a change that takes the least amount of effort or energy, that you enjoy the most, that is the simplest
Create a system — don’t have to remember or make effort, such as taking you medicine by placing it on the kitchen table so you remember to take it with food or even just using one of those weekly pill minder boxes so you k owe you took your medicine.
Use a habit tracker — checkmark for each day succeeded which creates a boost of dopamine (reward system in the brain) to slowly build up the habit as well as a visual reminder that you completed the task. Otherwise “Habit” which is a simple and free app for your phone.
Recommendations on where to start:
Light therapy- buy a light box and use for 10mins a day OR go outside and sit in the sun for 10 mins a day
Add a multivitamin or multi-mineral to your diet
Add fermented food to your diet
Add a vegetable to your diet
Daily gratitude practice
Express appreciation by texting or telling someone every day that you’re thankful for them or appreciate them
Watch less news
Follow uplifting social media accounts, ugh as goodnews, upworthy, or even add nature photography to your list of follows
Improve your sleep by decreasing your caffeine, use bed only for sleep
Practice Mindfulness, such as focus in slowing your breathing or feeling your breath when you drive or take a walk, drive without music and let your thoughts wander
Set limit on screen time
Don’t keep your phone by your bed, instead put a book there to read
Go for a walk or stretch
1 minute meditation, just google or look on Pinterest since there are a lot of ideas out there
Set small daily goals for steps
Do a self-regulation technique, such as deep breathing, deep yawning, or tapping
Spend more time in nature. If you live in the city, being exposed to plants or even the nature channel on tv or YouTube of nature photos or videos can be just as useful.
Deepen relationships already have, such as text someone, plan a date or meet up with friends or loved ones, call someone, make a reminder to call people
Set tiny rules for yourself to follow, such as you’re not allowed to call yourself names; when you catch yourself overthinking or catastrophic in to change the words to courageous language instead; don’t use the words “always” or “never”—changes black and white thinking to grey; don’t say “failure”, say “not yet”.

Listener
Summary: Fone Bone was still the best listener Thorn had ever met.
605 words
Thorn picked her way through the streets carefully; the capital never got as quiet at night as Barrelhaven, but people still needed to sleep even in Atheia, so it suited her purpose.
“Hello Fone Bone,” she murmured through a small smile; the alabaster likeness didn’t respond, one finger wielding the spark that’d ignited in Tanen Gard and saved the Valley. “It feels like it’s been ages already, doesn’t it?”
She didn’t wait for a reply. She’d come for a listener more than anything, and as much as people assigned more weight to her words since she’d been crowned, Fone Bone was still the best listener she’d ever met.
“I’d have visited sooner,” she said, glancing sideways. “It’s been busy, though; and even though the war’s over, people are still nervous. A lot of them are keen on having a guard accompany me almost anywhere I go.”
She laughed, whispering conspiratorially.
“They’ll be looking in the wrong places for a while once they notice I’m gone.”
She’d snuck out several times before, frequenting other spots in the capital just often enough that the guard ‘discovered’ her so-called usual hiding spots. Most of them were red herrings to distract attention from where she wanted to go, of course. The Bone cousins would’ve appreciated the trick.
“You can’t blame me, right?” She asked. “It gets a little suffocating sometimes; it’s still kind of a shock that I’m not just a farm girl, y’know?”
She turned her back to the statue, leaning against the wall parallel to the recess that housed it.
“That whole year we spent running around the Valley, I was just trying to make sure we all survived; it wasn’t until near the end that I made enough sense of things to try winning. Now?”
She looked up at the stars.
“Being in charge is an entirely different kind of battle. Feels like everything’s turned on its head all over again,” she said, idly raising one hand into the air, fingers stretched toward the distant lights. “I have to call Gran’ma Ben Rose in formal settings now; at least I don’t have to attach a title to her name, but it’s still weird.” She let her arm fall back down. “There are plenty of people around willing to help me, but…”
She rolled her head to one side, looking up at the casting of her friend’s likeness.
“None of them are you.” She breathed, quieter than even a whisper.
A sense of restlessness nearby wandered into the periphery of her awareness; she checked the position of the moon, sighed on realizing how long she’d lingered.
“I should go,” she said wistfully, pushing back from the wall. “I’ll be back to visit again, I’m sure.”
She halfway smiled, hesitating to break the illusion of her own creation and return to life as Queen Thorn.
“I hope you and Phoney, Smiley and Bartleby are happy,” she said. “Wherever you are now.”
Dreaming only knew if they actually made it back to Boneville, after all. Still, if they were together, they’d be fine.
“Good night, Fone Bone.” She said, turning up the street.
Four paces, and the note of a gentle, familiar mumble tickled her ear.
G’night, Thorn.
Her breath caught; she spun her head around.
The alabaster statue remained as she left it, unchanged.
And yet…
Warmth settled in her chest; she continued on her way, her mouth spread into a smile.
She knew her Veni Yan teachers would likely call it impossible, even if she did share it with anyone.
Yet for as small as he was, her dear Fone Bone had always been full of surprises.
