Tintin is a fandom where you just can't have spoilers.
Like, if someone tells you the incas used witchcraft to punish the explorers who disturbed the tomb of Inca Rascar Capac. You're like whatever man, good for them. Only after reading the book you realize what importance this fact holds 😂

This is so sad and complicated... I understand the protective bias, but frankly what they are is just too tough.
Now I keep wondering... How will they act when Tintin falls into the public domain (if that actually happens, by the way...)
Mounlinsart attacking Tintin fan artists and forcing them to take their works down is so scummy. I understand that they are trying to protect their rights to the series and respect the wishes of Hergé because before he passed away he said that he did not want any new Tintin stories made, but Mounlinsart is taking this way too far. Fanart is how fans of the series keep the love for Tintin alive so he won't fade further into obscurity.

It's Tintin Day again! ✨ And Haddock's poor old back gives out under the weight of Tintin fact-dropping current events like it's nothing!
There's been a big upheaval in the Detective Conan fandom - a disruption to vital shipping routes, you could say! Thank goodness attention is elsewhere so Tintin can continue pretending several of his own adventures didn't happen! 🌊🛥️

So, found the 1943 version of The Black Island.
Below is the snap of the copy I have.
Tumblr media
Interesting? If not, let me tell you something that'll make it interesting.
After all, I kinda am a Tintin-nerd!
The Black Island first appeared as comic strip in the newspaper supplement Le Petit Vingtième from 1937-38. (It was in black and white and french.) All these strips were later combined and published as a book of whooping 120 pages (!!).
In 1943, its colourised version was published which was cropped down to the printing house limit of 62 pages due to the War which caused resource shortage.
In 1966, they decided to publish an english version of it. As the book is based in England and Scotland, Hergé's Britain publisher, Methuen, expressed concerns that it did not represent the country correctly and may seem unfamiliar to the people of the country itself. So, Hergé was asked to rework it completely!
Hergé sent his assistant and collaborator to Britain and they collected photographs to be used as reference.
This time he made it perfect and updated the trains, houses' designs to 1960s style. Even people's outfit.
While he was about it, to keep up the consistency with Tintin's outfit as well, he was given his signature plus fours and blue sweater. As the albums published before it had already featured this outfit.
Now what's interesting is, people reading the book since 1940s, Tintin's signature outfit appeared in The Secret of the Unicorn. And It's popularised that way only. But for those reading the comic in Britain from 1960s, the outfit appeared in The Black Island, disappeared after that and reappeared in The Secret of Unicorn.
For me, the experience was similar to the 1960s. It was confusing at first as the outfit seemed so iconic yet it was changed in King Ottokar's Sceptre.
Even the art style has had it's rollercoaster ride, about which I would write a separate blog soon :)
Take care and stay nerdy! ✨🧑🏻‍🎓
