The Tinmal Mosque, also known as the Great Mosque of Tinmal, is a 12th-century mosque located in the village of Tinmel in the High Atlas Mountains of Morocco. It was built at the site where Ibn Tumart, the founder of the Almohad movement, was buried and is considered an important example of Almohad architecture. The mosque was constructed in 1156 in honor of Ibn Tumart, according to official Almohad doctrine. Although no longer operating as a mosque today, its remains are preserved as a historic site. The mosque is a rectangular structure with a courtyard, two galleries, and a nine-nave prayer room. The minaret rises above the mihrab and is decorated with geometric and floral patterns4. The mosque is located along the Tizi-n-Test mountain pass between Marrakesh and the Sahara Desert, and visitors can take the breathtaking Tizi n’Test road to reach it. Non-Muslims are allowed inside the mosque, although visitors may need to phone the guard to open the door.

IN A SMALL VILLAGE, DEEP in the #High #Atlas #mountains, lie the remains of a #medieval #Almohad fortress that once was the capital of a vast #empire stretching from #Mali to #Tunisia and #Spain. The city of #TinMal was established by Ibn Tumart, the founder and mahdi (spiritual leader) of the #Almohads, around 1124, and was the #cultural and #religious center of the empire until the city’s destruction by the rival #Merinid dynasty in the 1270s. All that was spared, apart from a few fragments of wall, was the monumental #mosque constructed in 1156 in honor of #IbnTumart, according to official #Almohad doctrine. Morocco - Ijoukak
Built at the height of the Almohad Dynasty in 1156 A.D., the surprisingly-intact Tinmal Mosque is all that remains of the once-grand Almohad city that was built high in the mountains near modern Ijoukak.

Tin Mal Mosque, High Atlas Mountains, Southern Morocco, 2015-10-23.
Finished by Abd el Moumen around 1153–54, ‘tinmil’ means “school” in ancient Amazigh, referencing the buildings use as a Koranic school in the past.
Tin Mal (often referred to as TinMal, or Tinmel) became the spiritual and artistic center of the Almohad Caliphate. It's minimalist design of brick work and arches leading to doorways were an awe inspiring setting for the the generals of the Berber Almohad Empire as they lead their military campaigns towards fighting the Almoravids.
The Koutoubia in Marrakesh was influenced and modeled on Tin Mals design.
