CBS special feature on the Lauren arc. (Not my video - found on YouTube)
A look into the creating of the Lauren storyline and behind the scenes of filming.
It confirms that the spy storyline was only conceived when Paget was sacked - just prior to filming starting on season 6. This means that any foreshadowing in earlier seasons was unplanned! I love the Lauren arc but can’t help but wonder how much better it would have been if that part of Emily’s backstory had been considered prior to her introduction - and if they didn’t have to rush it due to Paget’s leaving. How good would the foreshadowing have been if it had actually been planned? What other little glimpses into her spy past and mindset could we have been treated to? And most importantly - could we have had more flashbacks of Lauren and Ian romping around France in cosy taupe knitwear and white linen?
Some quotes from the video:
“An Espionage story for Prentiss just felt right ….. The question is how deep, how dark, how twisted can we go with Prentiss and still maintain her character but really fill in for the audience this is who she is.” Breen Frazier - Supervising Producer
[on Ian Doyle] “As with any superhero they have to have the arch nemesis and we thought that’s what she has in her past, somebody that she maybe even cared about and how sorta muddy that gets. So within her secret life there were secrets”. Erica Messer - Executive Producer

Summary: Ibis’ childhood cont
At 11 Ibis got his first girlfriend, a girl from his class named Anna, because his older siblings got in relationships too and that made it cool. Ulene inadvertently told Ibis that the house rule for girls was that they (he and Katra) had to meet them first before they could spend time over. Kiki couldn’t stand her so she was happy when they finally broke up later.
Another trip! This time the family went to Monte Vista. Both Ari and Eti now had boyfriends who also tagged along in this trip. Ulene rented a big house for the 11 of them. They met an old fae, Agatha, who recognized the pink hair. They discovered that she was related to them, sort of, she identified herself as the adoptive mother of a Lewis Notte, which was the family’s last name in Bridgeport. Lara changed it and then adopted Deadwyler after marrying Alan. Lewis didn’t have pink hair but his wife did and Agatha had a picture of them. Also during this trip Ibis met Francesca, who believed him to be 15 instead of almost 13. When Ulene found out he made him tell the truth which obviously meant she didn’t want to see him anymore. Before the trip ended Ulene and Ibis had a little chat about the responsibility of having a Pink haired heir.
Ibis’ more rebellious years begin. Before he’d broken rules and gotten punished but now he started taking things to new extremes. He got his piercings, eventually got his tattoos, started smoking, and making more drinks and the drugs him and his friends (Kiki and Pubert) would smoke. He didn’t care that he was breaking his mom’s biggest rule of absolutely no drugs or smoking. He also tried to date Kiki, and they hooked up for a bit, but when he wanted to take a step further she said no and everything ended.
10th grade and over the summer Ibis came up with a ridiculous plan that would end with him getting laid. His friends laughed when he told them and assured him they’d help but it wasn’t going to work. “No girl would fall for something so stupid!”. Well, one did. Ibis started ‘tutoring’ girls, first having lunch at school, then taking them home for dinner with the family so everyone would get a chance to meet, and finally ending in his room where he did everything he could to not open a book. Taia fell, hard, for him, and so their non-relationship relationship started. Saylor, Taia’s best friend, was vocally against this and even intimidated Ibis with her half-demon powers, but he took it in good stride because he had no intention of causing any harm. Because he lied he got grounded and punished, but he kept sneaking around to see her, and the whole thing started a vicious cycle. His mom was also on his ass for smoking which also kept extending his punishments. At the end of the year his school work had suffered so much due to absences that he had two choices, all boys military school, or Yinera Ealin Academy for genius occults.
He chose the Academy. He boarded there in Moonlight Falls for the last two years of high school\, where he made new friends and ‘dated’ new interesting girls. His roommate Kayne (and his brother Kale) became his new best friends, along with twins Emma and Grace. Emma was a frequent visitor of Ibis’ bed while Grace dated Kayne. Ibis also secretly ‘dated’ prom queen, class president, and actual fairy princess Ella, and a bunch of other girls, much to her distaste.
Ibis returned home to a Graduation party where everyone, even from neighboring towns, attended. Benny finally sealed the deal with girlfriend Gen, Timmy found some courage and did his first magic show performance in front of a crowd, Blaze and her new buddies escaped town after killing a guy right outside the venue, and Ibis hooked up with Taia after not having seen her for two years. Then it was off to college for Benny and Timmy, but off to travel the world for Ibis. With either friends (Kayne mostly) or family (his grandma Lara) he went to many cities around the world and had fun. He even visited his siblings in college.

JAMES BOND REFERENCES IN MORIARTY THE PATRIOT
I am a big fan of James Bond since my early teenage years. I watched every movies and read all books, so when the Moriarty the Patriot manga first started using James Bond references, I basically screamed. And my voice got 100x louder when the iconic My name is Bond. James Bond. scene happened.
I always wanted to write an analysis of YuuMori's James Bond connections, so now here we are.
First, let's talk a bit about the actual James Bond universe. The character of James Bond - the MI6 agent numbered 007 with a license to kill - got created by Ian Fleming in 1953. He first appeared in the novel called Casino Royale. Fleming wrote 12 novels and two short story collections with the character. The novels soon got movie adaptations, too, the first James Bond movie was Dr. No in 1962, where Sean Connery played Bond. Currently there are 25 Bond movies.
The James Bond movies can be classified into eras by the actor who played Bond. In order, these follow:
Sean Connery
(George Lazenby - but everyone tends to pretend this movie never happened)
Roger Moore
Timothy Dalton
Pierce Brosnan
Daniel Craig
The movies didn't come out in chronological order when it comes to James Bond's life-happenings. Most movies can be watched as stand-alones - but the Daniel Craig era tried to built up a storyline, where the movies are tied to each other. The James Bond movies always have an iconic intro, sing by a popular singer of the current era (the last movie's intro song was by Billie Eilish.)
The James Bond movie universe started to fuse with the Sherlock Holmes universe thanks to the Alan Moore comic book series, The League of Extraordinary Gentleman (1999). Professor Moriarty appeared here as M - the title what later ended up with Mycroft. The Elementary series (and somewhat BBC Sherlock) continued this tendency, featuring Mycroft as someone who has ties to the MI5/MI6.
Professor Moriarty in TLoEG
The Moriarty the Patriot series features most characters who are important in James Bond movies. They are..
M - the leader of the MI6, which role was fullfilled by Albert and Louis.
Q - the inventor who keeps coming up with weapons and cars for James Bond. In YuuMori, Q is Von Herder, the blind mechanic mentioned in the Empty House Conan Doyle story.
Ms. Moneypenny - a secretary working personally for M. In the Daniel Craig era, she started as a field agent, but later moved to do office work. James Bond always gives her flowers and little souvenirs.
When it comes to James Bond, his personality in Moriarty the Patriot is similar to the canon one: loving good cars and guns, flirting with woman (especially Moneypenny) and while it's not vodka martini he orders in the pub when he met with Patterson, he asks for the drink shaken, not stirren. (On the other hand, the Macallan scotch he asks for is a reference to what James Bond drank in the Skyfall movie.)
The location of the MI6 in YuuMori is also similar to the James Bond movies: underground and underwater in the Thames.
The headquarter in Skyfall
The Q-sector
The Man with the Golden Army arc features other references for the James Bond universe. The arc's title refers to the movie/book The Man with the Golden Gun (Roger Moore-era) - the two stories only similarity is that both deal with special guns. In that arc, Sebastian Moran takes on the identity of the 006, Alec Trevelyan. The character originally appeared in the Goldeneye James Bond movie (Pierce Brosnan-era) played by Sean Bean. He had the number 006 and he was the mentor of James Bond (like Moran later on). He seemingly got killed off at the start of the movie (but later returned as a villain).
Alec Trevelyan in Goldeneye
Maybe not an intentional reference, but still interesting: the James Bond movie Tomorrow Never Dies features an evil media mogul, Elliot Carver as a villain who likes orchestrating catastrophic incidents so his newspaper can be the first to write about them, manipulating people that way and gaining control in the media - kind of similar to Milverton (yes, the media mogul Milverton thing is from Sherlock, but still), who was the mastermind behind the Jack the Ripper murders then manipulated the public through the news he created. (I can actually see him orchestrating incidents in order to gain more power and become the King of Media, too.)
Elliot Carver in Tomorrow Never Dies
We've yet to see the main villain of James Bond: Ernst Stavro Blofeld, (first appearing in the Thunderball book) the head of the crime organization called Spectre. I wander when he will appear in YuuMori, if they appear at all, but I really wish!
I hope in the next stories YuuMori's James Bond world keeps expanding - that's such an interesting aspect of the series, I love to see more references!

What ho! It's chapter IV of The Hound of the Baskervilles in Letters from Watson, and we get to meet Sir Henry Baskerville, freshly come from the Canadian West.
The latter was a small, alert, dark-eyed man about thirty years of age, very sturdily built, with thick black eyebrows and a strong, pugnacious face. He wore a ruddy-tinted tweed suit and had the weather-beaten appearance of one who has spent most of his time in the open air, and yet there was something in his steady eye and the quiet assurance of his bearing which indicated the gentleman.
So... I was not expecting when James Mortimer felt like a Timothy Hutton character that Sir Henry Baskerville would feel like a Christian Kane character. This is obviously not Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's fault in any way, but it's certainly enlivening my imagination.
At this point, I've watched so much Leverage and White Collar that when Sir Henry says nobody knew he was going to the Northumberland Hotel until he decided it with Mortimer, I figured that Mortimer had maneuvered him into that choice by subtle language choices. It was a shocker later in the chapter for Holmes to find the bearded cab driver following Sir Henry.
When I first read this story as a mid-sized child, the internet wasn't around, so I took as a given that "foolscap" was some kind of paper. I'd envisioned it as having some odd texture, like the onion-skin paper that grown-ups used to use for airmail letters. But no -- it's a size, similar to U.S. "legal sized" paper, so the note is on a half-sheet of that.
Holmes' quickly finding the exact article from which the words were taken raised the hairs on my neck as being too neat. So, of course, I googled for the phrase "keep away from the" in the London Times. I figured it'd come up three times a week, and I was fairly wrong. It's a common phrase, but not that common. So fair enough, Holmes reads the newspaper carefully.
The mystery to me is why the letter writer didn't cut the letters of the word moor out separately and paste them down. Was the brush in his bottle of adhesive too big to do it neatly?
Then we get the expertise challenge between Holmes and Mortimer:
“Really, Mr. Holmes, this exceeds anything which I could have imagined,” said Dr. Mortimer, gazing at my friend in amazement. “I could understand anyone saying that the words were from a newspaper; but that you should name which, and add that it came from the leading article, is really one of the most remarkable things which I have ever known. How did you do it?” “I presume, Doctor, that you could tell the skull of a negro from that of an Esquimau?” “Most certainly.” “But how?” “Because that is my special hobby. The differences are obvious. The supra-orbital crest, the facial angle, the maxillary curve, the—”
Mortimer's expertise is probably bunk, and Doyle's audience would have been split between people who believed Mortimer could tell the difference and those who already thought it was bunk. Smithsonian has a helpful article on the Morton Collection of skulls and the shadow it cast across anthropological practices here. Prior to his death in 1851, Morton had an avid network of fellow scientists who believed that their measuring of stolen skulls was getting them somewhere (despite the variety they found within skulls they thought were the same race). Darwin, however, thought it was all bad science.
Moving on to the written moor... that's a look back at a way of life that pen technology has changed significantly.
“If you examine it carefully you will see that both the pen and the ink have given the writer trouble. The pen has spluttered twice in a single word, and has run dry three times in a short address, showing that there was very little ink in the bottle. Now, a private pen or ink-bottle is seldom allowed to be in such a state, and the combination of the two must be quite rare. But you know the hotel ink and the hotel pen, where it is rare to get anything else."
The pen is likely a steel-tipped dip pen, which did not need to be constantly "mended" as quills had, and which was dipped into an ink pot. Dip pens had been around since the 1850s. One thing we do know is that the writer is not a person who writes often enough or casually enough to take trouble over a fountain pen -- then an invention just under a decade old and filled with an eye dropper. A person using a fountain pen would have had their own pen, and it would not have run dry so frequently. (Here's my source.)
What does Holmes see on the paper? It lacks a watermark, even though foolscap is named specifically for its watermark of a fool's cap; but that could have been on the other half of the sheet. Is it a blot, a stray hair, a water stain?
Where is Sir Henry's boot? That's got to be intended for making footprints, right?
I do rather like Sir Henry.
“Whichever it is, my answer is fixed. There is no devil in hell, Mr. Holmes, and there is no man upon earth who can prevent me from going to the home of my own people, and you may take that to be my final answer.” His dark brows knitted and his face flushed to a dusky red as he spoke.
Will one of the twenty-three hotels near Charing Cross turn up a cut-up Times in the rubbish? What is the cab really up to? Are Holmes and Mortimer flirting or conning each other?
