Part 2 of 3 - The F@got Incident -This is my reality. This is reality for many of us. Tonight while coming home from work on the NYC subway, I was talking to a coworker while, a guitarist played nearby. He was begging for money and came over to me. I noticed him look me up and down and said the following. "I would like to dedicate my next song to Bruce Jenner's surgeon." He then began to play the song "A Natural Woman." After playing a small part of the song he stops and says, "You get it. He's not a natural woman." This really triggered me. Earlier on in my transition I was often too scared to do anything. Not these days. I stick up for myself and I won't take your sh*t. Tonight, I decided to confront his bigoted ass and call him out on what he said. This man is a coward and same with the guy who decided to call me a faggot while sticking up for myself. I didn't even get a glimpse of him because he literally ran off the train. Cowards. Look at this guys smug face. Makes me sick. I know I will never forget it. I will probably reshare this again and hoping some of you wont forget his face either. I'm sure some of you reading or watching this don't understand why this is so offensive? Check your privilege. Try replacing the topic of his jokes. Imagine he was sitting there making really stupid but hurtful jokes about an identity you have deep in your core. Imagine sitting there hearing his jokes as others laughed about what you are. Can you imagine people laughing about something that hurts your feelings. Imagine if it was about your race, your religion, your age, or weight......Imagine. Sorry if I seem triggered but I am just sick of this crap. We are not some stupid punchline. We are people and many of us are the strongest people you will ever know. The man continued to talk about me while he played for the rest of his trip. I hope someone can find me this mans name. I hope Karma gets him. Today is the day I realized every generation needs a Martin Luther King Jr. As Donald Trump denigrates the Oval Office today I remind you of an MLK quote. "Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere." I remind everyone that not only our black, Hispanic, LGBTQ, Asian, or Native American people in this country are worried, but our counterparts in countries that look to the U.S. Today the world watches as a bigot, racist, sexist, and homophobic man takes office. The pride I once held in this country has been undermined. But I will never give up. I will be this generation's Martin Luther King Jr. if I have to be. I will make this country into something I can take pride in despite Trumps attempts to return it to a time of oppression. Today is the day I realized I cannot be silent. Today I realized my words can have an effect. Today I realize that I am not alone. Today I will start what Martin King Luther Jr. never got to finish.

A poem in which I try to decipher the concept of street harassment. – GNL

Girls, I know you don’t understand. Don’t understand how you can live in a world in which your body is not your own. In which, people cannot pay you enough respect to simply not sexualize your existence. To not treat you like a dog they found to call their own. Its Thursday Evening, 1 A.M. You are walking home from a long day of making too little money in a degrading job, when you hear: “Hey baby, nice tits.” You shrink. The world around you shrink’s. And you realize that that’s exactly what you are to the world. A part of the body. You don’t understand how you are not your anecdotes. Your jokes. Your laugh. You. You are simply your tits. We don’t choose to be labeled as a part of the body. So why do men blame women? Why are we the ones being accused of “leading him on.” I am so sick and tired of being a goddamn excuse. My actions and feelings ought not determine how you treat me. Research shows that empathy is the only true way to solve humanity’s inner conflicts. So, show some damn empathy. We are people. We are not simply bodies for you to do what you like with them. We are your mothers. Your sisters. Your grandmothers. We are you. My grandmother told me growing up: “If you will only achieve equality if work for it” I never really understood the importance of that until the day I watch a man in a truck holler at a woman, as I see her being shrink before him. Her body a tool. An object. A way for him to achieve climax. And I wonder what goes on in his head. Maybe he thinks it is a compliment. Maybe this is a man’s way of “I love you.” And he doesn’t understand that across the country “nice ass,” without a response becomes, “F**k you.” A knife to her back. Her life again, in the hands of a man. And I wonder why they can’t say a compliment instead of dehumanizing statements that lower us to nothing more than a portrait. What kind of toxicity prevents them from a human state of being? And maybe it’s from the beginning. Maybe it’s the turning of the phrase: boys will be boys. Maybe it is the excuses we make for them. But we will never know. We are excluded from conversations about our own dignity. We are labeled: feminazi, b*tch, Slut, and every other derogatory term in the book, for simply not being complacent in their treatment of us. And I am simply done. I am more than my hair. I am more than my tits. I am more than my smile, or anything else physical about me. I am the wind. I am the oxygen that fills your lungs. I am the sun rising in the morning. I am the freaking queen. I am every single miraculous thing about this life. And I deserve to be treated as such. So, until you begin treating women as people, and not women; go holler somewhere else, because this sidewalk is ours. Like my grandma taught me, it’s time to fight.
