hmmm. so, I'm starting the end of time in the rewatch... by this point, the themes of "the natural order of things must be followed or Bat Shit will happen" has reached its peak w/ last episode. I had parked analyzing that for later (where does this urge in s1-s4 to portray Time and History as unshakable forces come from? why is the theme of "inevitability" such a focus? and why does it work?)... but ToE janked me and asked me to analyze it now lol bc it comes and opens with this: It is said that in the final days of planet Earth, everyone had bad dreams. To the west of the north of that world, the human race did gather, in the celebration of a pagan rite to banish the cold and the dark. Each and every one of those people had dreamt of the terrible things to come. But they forgot, because they must. They forgot their nightmares of fire and war and insanity. They forgot. Except for one. I remembered this phrase on someone's blog and thought oh, it may have been a reference! and... indeed it is. To this poem from victorian era poet matthew arnold...

which I think clarifies some stuff they were going for a bit, with this "time can be (can't be) rewritten" theme, and also why donna's seemingly "pointless" memory erasure *had* to happen... because there's a recurring theme in s1-s4 that, to allow anything to happen in the future, things have to be scarified in the past. (for the human race to go to the stars A Lot of experimental crews had to die) etc... and, this works in tandem with the "everything has its time and everything ends" theme. for new life to be born, there has to be death, maybe it's just me projecting my slight taoism philosophizing into it but... it feels like doctor who's s1-s4 messaging around death + the passing of time seems to be almost ... a metaphysical law it is dictating: the dark things in our lives have to happen. we will fail to reach our potential (in the case of donna), we will lose people, we will regret things... but we can't undo what has been done or try to go against that "natural flow" of things, or else we will go human the equivalent of timelordvictorious / batshit insane lol

Almost certainly the last novel I will finish in 2020, I really enjoyed this installment of the Time Lord Victorious story. I still have a couple of audio stories to listen to, and I’m probably never going to experience the escape room or the live show, but this nicely wraps up the parts of the story begun in the first book. Author Una McCormack does a great job keeping the pace up, keeping the character voices distinct, switching things up with exciting twists, and making the Daleks feel genuinely threatening. (Oh, I haven’t finished the Dalek YouTube series either, come to think of it.) She captured the voices of the three different Doctors so well, I wish she hadn’t had to rely on calling them the eighth, ninth or tenth Doctors. That’s a personal peeve of mine, especially since we now know those numbers are wildly inaccurate. That’s a small quibble, though. This was a really quick read, but I liked how it explored the character of the Doctor rather than just being another exciting adventure with the Daleks, and I feel like it actually would be possible to reread these books when I have all the pieces of the TLV puzzle, to see how they all fit together. #thismakesmehappy #books #2020reading #doctorwho #doctorwhobooks #timelordvictorious #allfleshisgrass #unamccormack https://www.instagram.com/p/CJeJERmpy9E/?igshid=1ac30c87bp44z

Back story: In case some of y’all don’t know, I’m a huge fan of Homestuck (that’s right, I’ll admit it). Luna is one of several versions of myself I’ve written into unfinished fanfics of Homestuck. She’s an epic work of progress, for sure. She’s gay, which is prolly the first time I’ve written a character as such. I’ve included other members of the LGBTQ+, such as Nathan (ace) and Logan (myself, genderfluid) in some of the things I’ve written.

The beginning of this post is a shout out to the format of introductions in Homestuck. Also, if any y’all didn’t know, my blog, @doctuhwhom, is titled “incredulousWhonerd[IW]” which is the pesterhandle for both OC Logan and Luna. I’ve later retconned Logan’s handle to be timelordVictorious[TV], which is the blog title of my main blog, @loganb1495.

Luna’s shirt symbol was originally the female gender symbol (♀), but later was changed to a cat. She is sometimes seen wearing a green denim jacket with semi-matching shoes.

Fun fact: I chose her name because of my favorite HP character, Luna Lovegood (yeah, I’m a nerd).

David Tennant said:

“The Doctor in Time Lord Victorious is a different character. He’s slightly lonelier, slightly scratchier, when he doesn’t have one of his pals to hold him back. But it’s nice to tell stories from different times of his life. You just have to try and make sure you’re in the right mindset. The script is fascinating. I’ve only got one side of it, but I’m very aware there’s more to this story, that there’s another Doctor on the other side of the disc. I look forward to getting my LP so I can listen to it all.”

Paul McGann added:

“I’ve read this script twice through and I’m still none the wiser. I’m more confused after the second time than I was after the first. It’s only while working on it that I’ve become aware of how it’s going to be structured. It really appeals to me, the idea that it’s in two parts, on two sides of vinyl. I think it’s fun for people listening. Part of the excitement is when the different incarnations meet… or nearly meet.”

Writer and Producer Alfie Shaw said:

“Director Scott Handcock has pulled together an amazing who’s who of Doctor Who for the cast. We’ve got alumni from the series as well as Torchwood and The Sarah Jane Adventures. It’s been an honor to create Big Finish’s first commissioned-for-vinyl story, and utterly thrilling to write for both the Eighth and Tenth Doctors.”

The vinyl will launch in selected UK ASDA stores on 27 November 2020. A digital download of the story will be available globally from the Big Finish website from 04 December 2020, and is now available for pre-order.
