The iconic LIFE magazine, now mostly an online only entity, was established in 1883. In 1936, publisher Henry Luce, the owner of Time Inc., purchased the company for $92,000, transforming its focus to visual storytelling. Its popularity exceeded all expectations, with circulation peaking at over 13.5 million copies per week during its heyday. The cover of the 26 April 1937 edition, featuring Torkel Korling's photograph of a white leghorn rooster with a beautifully detailed cockscomb, is particularly memorable for its absence of the signature red and white 'LIFE' masthead. Luce had tasked Al Zingaro, a layout artist working the nightshift, to create a cover showcasing Korling's rooster photo. Zingaro quickly obliged but something wasn't right. Luce felt the masthead and cockscomb clashed. As the clock ticked past midnight, and despite Zingaro's redrafts, they couldn't agree on the LIFE logo's placement. Zingaro recalled the pivotal moment: 'I said, “Mr. Luce, we are at an impasse.” He was silent for all of 30 seconds then the thunderclap! “Let us omit the logo entirely. This fine photo must not be tampered with,” he said. “We’ll put LIFE in the red banner below in small type."'
Luce's resolve to temporarily demote his fledgling magazine's branding, driven by his concern for preserving the artistic integrity of a photograph of a rooster, is truly admirable. By removing the masthead, the cover gains a timeless quality and aesthetic durability that allows it to resonate both in the 1930s and nearly a century later in the 2020s.

'Faux Body Ornaments' jewelry store - 7309 Melrose Ave, Los Angeles CA (1986)
Designed by Solo Productions (Laura Solow), winged horse sculpture by W.J. Evans
"The original space, a large room, bare but for two Georgian columns and an archway, provided an empty canvas for Solow. The jewelry offered - gold mesh chains, twined metallic ropes, hanging crystals - pointed Solow in the direction of fantasy. Faux presents the visitor with a complete "planet-scape," an environment with elements of the past and the future, joining to create a sense of fairytale timelessness. The graphic image that serves as the repeated theme and the store's logo, a full moon split by a bolt of lighting, is the basis for an almost narrative design. Further back in the store is the most prominent element, mounted on the same wall as the archway: a gauze-winged horse in flight appears to be leaping out of the mountains. Solow explains that this is the narrative aspect of the store; the horse represents the muse, and has entered our world."
Scanned from the July 1986 issue of VMSD Magazine
Note: Melrose Avenue was a hotspot for amazingly creative and playful design in the 80s and 90s, I'm working to collect as many interiors and storefronts from that era as possible.

have you ever ranked pirate flag designs? i think i really need to know your take on that… and also who you think designed them in the crew?
Oh this is a good one, i havent done it and havent even thought about it before!
Im not gonna rank all the flags bc im sure i'll forget some, so...
Top 10 Jolly Roger 💀
10. Hawkins Pirates
Tumblr media
It has a bit too much going on but i like it, i think its creepy and gives off black magic vibes, true to Hawkins powers and aesthetic
9. Kid Pirates
Tumblr media
There so much going on but its badass. It feels like a 13 y/o boy assisted in the choices but its also feel honest, like he genuinely is that. Very true to Kid's personality
8. Thriller Bark Pirates
Tumblr media
They showed a bit more restaine than the other two, more clean. Strong aesthetic game in desing and colors, you just know they have a haunted mannor dracula shit going on
7. Whitebear Pirates
Tumblr media
Instant classic. Neat and to the point. If you have a physical trait like that use, brand on it. I also like the angry eyes on the skull
6. Buggy Pirates
Tumblr media
Speaking of physical traits. No messing around, clown, bosh. I also like it looks silly, it doeant strike fear but its so funny looking that i like it
5. Red Hair Pirates
Tumblr media
Against what i've saying, i love they resisted the urge to give their jolly roger red hair (there are other red haired people, its not that unique). Its a classic timeless look. The red streaks bring it together to look like Shanks scars but also an eyepatch but also blood.
4. Heart Pirates
Tumblr media
Law does not have a jolly roger he has a Brand™. The jolly roger has nothing to do with his physical appearence of name of the crew but it has a story, or backstory rather. Its a unique shape, it has its own color scheme, he slaps it on on everything. Its a logo, and i like it
It also if you look at it for long enough it starts to look like a surprised egg with striped piyamas on
3. Straw Hat Pirates
Tumblr media
Talking of branding. Simple, effective, a pop of color on the hat. Silly looking and you inmediatly know who is behind this crew. A personalised classic and bc its so straight fowards just beats Law's desing to the top three
2. Cook Pirates
Tumblr media
Its so silly i cant not give it high marks. Can you even imagine been terrorised by a crew that sails around with that? Amazing. And from the man nicknamed Red Leg Zeff bc of the blood that his kicks drew, duality of men
1. Kuja Pirates
Tumblr media
Now that is a look. Its simple yet scary af. It really intimidates you, and its related to Boa but not in a too obvious way, a call back to Medussa and gorgons, badass and dangerous women. Impactful, effective and iconic.
And as for who made them: Hawkins(?) (dont know any other members) / Kid and Killer helped / Hogback / Whitebear but i think he consulted Rogers and they sortof copied eachother / Shanks age 14 as a joke / idk why but Lucky Roux / Law. / Luffy and Usopp helped (as we know) / Zeff (he is quirky like that) / Amazon Lily's CM

an odd compliment as it's about an art piece of yours from months ago, but i just want to say as a disabled guy, thank you for the cane in your ludinus fanart earlier in the year! i havent stopped thinking about it and i love how you remembered that detail when a lot of folk dont seem to. if you want to answer, what was your thought process drawing that fanart and what are some details in your interpretation of ludinus's design that really stuck out to you?
awww this is so great! Thank you for the kind words.
Science tell us that canes are one of the sexiest props a character can interact with. They actually increase swagger by up to 30% in a layperson and well over 40% in the hands of a trained user.
I personally find Ludinus really compelling. I love that Laura/Jester at the live show mentioned that he hadn't done anything objectionable to the M9 before the solstice, and in fact was pretty polite and helpful in the face of Trent Ikithon (sp?). I like how... practical he is, how timeless, how unattached to wealth and comfort. Compare to Trent's weird cruelty and obsession and gross opulence, Ludinus is more of an Essek than a Delilah.
So yeah- I really wanted to draw him with some menace, but also with his trademark subtlety. By far the least approachable thing about him is the graphic design of the Cerberus Assembly logo, so I added that in the chair. And the most approachable thing about him is his cane, which makes him feel like... one of us, I guess. Someone who does things with his hands, instead of folding them like a statue of a god.
Also- and this is purely a me thing- I'm kind of obsessed with very old immortals? Like elves are basically ageless, but also he's ancient. I'm so into that dichotomy. I want thin skin, I want a sense of care in his walk, I want elements of age that don't really vibe with the rest of the aesthetic. I want him to feel subtly but noticeably wrong, I guess.
Thanks again for this. I didn't realize I wanted to talk about it, but I'm glad I got the opportunity to do so!

de-influencing you
from someone who gets overwhelmed any time she opens a social media application.
expensive cosmetics. keep it simple and stick to skincare, makeup and hair products you know and trust. i've tried it all from salon shampoos and high-end concealers to ridiculously priced face oils and praised nail polishes, only to realise my favourites are the affordable drugstore products i can easily repurchase. it's the ingredients that matter, not the prestige or popularity of a brand or the amount of products in your routine.
new clothes. of course you can and should replace your holey socks and the jeans you've grown out of, but i'm certain most of us have more clothes than we need. what if we tried to use up (and, when possible, mend) our existing pieces instead of getting new trousers and sneakers just because there's now a trendier option out there?
dietary supplements. unless you have a deficiency and have been told by a healthcare professional to take a supplement, you probably don't need one. with a healthy, varied diet, you can skip all those green powders, probiotics and multivitamins, that weirdly enough have become part of some internet aesthetics. if, however, you do need to supplement (as i need to with iron), make sure you know what is in the product you're buying and how it works best — iron, for example, should be taken on an empty stomach and with vitamin c.
internet aesthetics. your style, your whole lifestyle, doesn't need to fit an "aesthetic". it's tiresome to try and classify your tastes and attempt to stuff them into the narrow confines of these artificial ideals. do things you enjoy, decorate and dress according to what appeals to your eye and forget about the rest.
regular beauty treatments. if your skin is healthy, a normal at-home skincare routine should be enough to make sure your face is glowing. a (fake) tan, hair removal and manicured nails aren't and shouldn't be necessities either, but if your beauty routines are important to you, just do the things at home and save your resources for more valuable pursuits than the ever-expanding requirements of modern womanhood.
cosmetic injections or surgeries. i've always been of the opinion that we should all be allowed to do as we please with our bodies, without shame or judgement from others. however, the more i learn about the risks of cosmetics procedures and the rates of patients' dissatisfaction with their results, the more negatively i've started to view it all. with more and more people walking around with filler, botox and surgically enchanced or erased features, i worry about our ability to accept ourselves as we are. i worry about the class divide these procedures are creating (who can afford it at all? who can afford a good result?) and i worry about people spending massive amounts of money and time on what are essentially unnecessary health risks. so i say: don't do it.
anything designer. as we all know, price and quality don't always go hand in hand. while i'm all for choosing great quality lasting products, popular designer brands might not necessarily be the way to go. people haven't ditched designer goods just because the go-to style is now "old money"; they've just moved from gucci to céline. i personally don't think any designer brand is really worth it, but wherever you buy, at least pay attention to materials and construction, and stay away from counterfeit goods.
trying to look "expensive". while i have always had a more classic style and was raised never to show logos ("you're not a free advertisement, dear"), i find the "looking expensive" thing such a strange trend, one that returns whenever times are financially unstable. even though i wholeheartedly approve of buying timeless quality pieces (if that is a style you actually enjoy), i don't think anyone should do so in order to look wealthy. nobody will think you're the trust fund offspring of a centuries-old family if you aren't, and most of all, nobody really cares whether you are one or not. the thing is, you really cannot tell whether someone is wealthy based on their looks, so why spend time and money trying to look the part?
clothes that don't fit your lifestyle. it's difficult to resist cute athleisure, but as someone who only wears workout clothes to actually exercise three times a week, i know i only need two or three sets. buy pieces that fit your everyday life, not the life you wish you had. no amount of cocktail dresses will make your life a flurry of parties, if these events are already few and far between.
most stationery products. i love stationery as much as the next person: i love a good notebook, beautiful pens and all the related little knick-knacks, but frankly, i only use one mechanical pencil, a specific type of black gel pens, and three notebooks at a time. no matter how cute some highlighters, letter papers or pastel page markers may be, i have zero reason to buy them.
trending books. i know this might be a controversial one, but buying piles of books on the recommendation of social media influencers isn't a smart use of space and money. just last year i got myself half a dozen popular titles from a cute bookshop, but ended up regretting the purchases because i only liked one of them. borrow the trendy new books from your local public library, and if you really want to collect books, only buy ones that you really love.

Add a Touch of Class with Clipart Black And White
Let’s be real—there’s something undeniably classy about black-and-white designs. They exude a sense of sophistication that colored clipart sometimes lacks. Whether you’re working on a formal event invitation or a sleek logo, Clipart Black And White can elevate your work instantly. The clean contrast of black and white is both timeless and modern, making it suitable for all kinds of projects.
Versatile and Easy to Use
The best part about Clipart Black And White is its versatility. These images can seamlessly fit into any theme or project. Need to create a professional business presentation? Done. Crafting a fun, kid-friendly activity sheet? No problem. The simplicity of black and white means it won’t clash with other design elements, making it incredibly easy to work with.

My WRESTLECADE Experience
Hey Everyone ! I went to WRESTLECADE this past weekend. If you don’t know what WRESTLECADE is , it’s a huge three day convention that takes place every year in November during the Thanksgiving weekend. It celebrates everything about professional wrestling. Here is my experience.
I went to WRESTLECADE on Saturday. I was originally supposed to meet Kevin Nash , however , he had to pull of it due to a medical procedure he had done on his back. All I want is for him to get well soon and I also hope that he is okay . The convention center was huge with an upstairs floor and a downstairs floor. I used to be an All Star Cheerleader , so I was used to being in a building like that . Walking in to WRESTLECADE, there was a photo op with a few of the wrestlers who were there such as Timeless Toni Storm, Gail Kim, The Hardys, Ric Flair , Sting , and a few others . It was pretty cool!
My sister was there to meet her favorite AEW wrestler , Darby Allin. My Brother -In -Law was there to meet Kurt Angle , and I was there to meet ‘ The Mouth Of The South ’ Jimmy Hart. They stayed downstairs to meet Darby and Kurt as I had to go upstairs to meet Jimmy . When we made it there , we began to talk to other fans in line . This is something I recommend at a wrestling show and a convention because we are all there for the same thing , our love of wrestling. Most of them were there for Sting and Darby Allin. As we were hanging out and before I went upstairs , the legendary wrestling manager , ‘ The Perfect 10 ’ Baby Doll, walked past us . I’ve met her before and she’s awesome. I also ran into one of my favorite independent wrestlers downstairs too.
The room I had to go in to meet Jimmy Hart was huge. I’ve never seen so many people there. It was very easy for me to find the booth where Jimmy Hart was at. I got to meet @hart-on-my-sleeve and her husband too which was cool! Thank you for inviting me to your booth! I had such a great experience with them and Jimmy as well. Jimmy is such a great person and very cool to meet . Getting to hold his iconic megaphone was such an honor to do so. My Brother - In - Law also met Jimmy and had an awesome experience with him too. He also had a great experience with Kurt Angle. He said Kurt was so cool and loved his shirt. He’s a wrestler too and was inspired by Kurt for his gimmick. After meeting Jimmy, I had to stop by and talk to George South. It’s always a great time seeing him. And yes , I kind of Marked out when Gail Kim , Jordynne Grace , and Speedball Mike Bailey walked past me. I almost cried when Mina Shirakawa waved at me. I love her so much.
Now, don’t laugh at me about this part. As my Brother - In - Law and I were walking , we were thinking of going to meet and talk to Jim Ross. However , I kept looking around and I saw the TNA World Champion, Nic Nemeth. I kept looking at him. My Brother-In-Law kept asking if I wanted to meet him. I’m a little shy. I also have a crush on Nic. I went to meet Nic and I can say that he is so sweet. We talked for a little and he even let me hold his championship when we took our photo. So, thank you Nic. My sister was still in line for Darby Allin and about lost it when ‘ Switchblade ’ Jay White and ‘ Timeless ’ Toni Storm walked past her . She spoke to them and she was ecstatic when they spoke to her . She almost had to play bodyguard for Juice Robinson because she saw him on crutches and people were being rude and wouldn’t get out of his way. She said she related to him because the same thing happened to her when she was crutches trying to walk before after having hip surgery and a few other medical problems. I am proud of her for that .
The coolest thing I got to do at WRESTLECADE was meet the former artist for the WWE , Tom Fleming . You might have seen his work for The Undertaker’s first WWE shirt in 1991 and a few Survivor Series posters. Tom designed the logo and costume for Razor Ramon . He told me a few stories about Razor and Owen Hart. Just hearing those stories made me tear up a little and it helped me learn more about them. Did you know that Razor Ramon was originally going to wear tights and a hat for his character? Tom told me that Scott Hall didn’t like the hat and he was working on his legs , so that’s why he wore trunks . I also got to see the original concepts for Tatanka , The 123 Kid ( X-PAC), and Kane as well. He also said that you might have seen his work on the internet . Thank you to him for taking time and talking to me about his career working for the WWE . I also got to meet the legendary ‘ Russian Nightmare ’ Nikita Koloff and talk to him about the article I wrote about him. Nikita also knows my Dad. Nikita is such a great guy and I thank him for his time too. My sister met up with us after meeting Darby and she said he was very good to her . Yes , she almost cried after meeting him . He took his time with her and talked to her . Thank you , Darby for that.
We all decided to go downstairs to explore and see who was down there. All of us were looking for Joe Hendry . Therefore , we went into one of the many rooms they had open for the Fanfest and the first person we met there was Jerry ‘ The King ’ Lawler. Jerry was very cool . I saw the iconic photo of Lawler and Andy Kaufman on his table and pointed it out . He said it happened in 1982. I told him I wanted to write about it and he gave me that signature Jerry Lawler smile . We also told him how he made our childhoods great . We made our way around and even talked to Hornswoggle. He was awesome and I loved his Taylor Swift inspired shirt he had. My Brother - In - Law had a stare down with Matt Cardona. We also talked to Matt too and told him how much we loved Chelsea. Danhausen waved at us. I had to do the talking when we met Joe Hendry. All I can say is , Joe Hendry is such a sweetheart. Therefore , we went back into the lobby and I ran into Jojo, Bray Wyatt’s widow . She is so sweet and gorgeous in person. I also ran into Ricky ‘ The Dragon ’ Steamboat. He is very nice .
We went back into the room where we met Jimmy Hart. My sister thought it would be funny to embarrass me by telling Ryan Nemeth I thought Nic was hot. Ryan was a sweetheart too, like his brother. We also encountered The Boogeyman. My Brother - In - Law made my sister go up to him and she was scared. She was and still is terrified of him to this day. We also saw James Storm there. My sister kind of freaked out when she saw him. He is her all time favorite TNA Wrestler . Guess who also saw their favorite all time TNA Wrestler and got to talk to him ? Me! I got to talk to Frankie Kazarian. He is so amazing and very nice. Thank you to Ryan, The Boogeyman , and Frankie for being so good to us.
The Supershow was great too. As we were in line waiting , Zilla Fatu came by us and asked us what we were waiting on. He was so nice . Zilla is also a talented wrestler too. I loved the energy of the fans during the show and the card was great too. The matches that stole the show for me were the Nemeth Brothers vs Brad Attitude and Matt Cardona and the Doors , Ladders, and Chairs Match. When Joe Hendry made his entrance , I thought the roof of the place was going to blow off. Getting to see The Great Khali was awesome too. At the end of the Supershow , as we were walking out , we met NXT Superstar, Je’Von Evans. He is such a nice guy! Shout to him for being cool!
The Staff was great! They were good to everyone and the event was very well organized! I’ll definitely go back next year ! This was our first time there !
Who do you meet at WRESTLECADE? Were you a first time visitor to WRESTLECADE like me ? What did you think? Let me know!
Love You All,
- Kay
