The Spymaster waves his hands energetically in times of great excitement, both positive and negative.

In The Timeless Children, he flaps when berating himself for missing an opportunity for a good one-liner:

In The Power of the Doctor, he shakes out his hands vigorously when breaking free from UNIT imprisonment:

The Spymaster evinces many traits associated with being neurodeviant [see #47: He's neurodeviant! for a discussion of why I use that term] or neurodivergent.

Here's a partial list:

He has a conversational consciousness. See #34 [his reaction to Thirteen’s TARDIS] and #11 [his mind at work]. Included because this is an unusual way to think and therefore possibly indicative of an uncommon neurotype.

Imagine this as a character progression for Bruce Wayne in Matt Reeves’ universe:

A different take on the Playboy persona that Bruce Wayne usually has. I honestly don’t want the playboy route. But I had the idea of, what if instead of the playboy route, he becomes a victim of stupid publicity and tabloids that try to paint him as such.

Bruce tries to develop more of his public, humanitarian persona, helping Gotham in more ways than just as the Batman. Maybe he goes to a charity auction and talks with a lady and of course paparazzi love taking photos out of context. Stupid tabloids try and paint him as a playboy, making up conspiracies for why he was out of the public eye for so long. And Bruce? Well, he doesn’t respond. He neither confirms nor denies these theories and accusations. He’s still helping people as both Bruce Wayne and Batman and the tabloids are unknowingly giving him a persona or cover story for his Batman shenanigans. Win for him.

I was tagged by @thisbluespirit a few days ago to list my top 5 fics I’ve written (so far!) and had to put off answering it, because at the moment I’m still very excited about my Yuletide assignment (which was in fact for thisbluespirit), and I wanted to list it, but it’s only come off anon today! So here are my top 5 fics I’ve written: in no particular order, I’m not that self-aware.

1. “The Strands of Fate” (Doctor Who (1963), T but probably could be G, Fourth Doctor/Romana II, 1709 words). This is the fic that I’d most like to have not written myself so I could read it. (But, the next best thing, Moki wrote a sequel to it!) It’s got trope subversion, it’s got Doctor/Romana, it’s got Time Lord nonsense, it’s got Lalla Ward’s bat sweater. It’s very me. Also writing it was super fun because it really took off--I was expecting it to be a couple of hundred words of joke.

2. “Somewhere to Belong” (Doctor Who (1963 and 2005), G, First Doctor, Susan, Jenny, 2200 words). Another one that sort of wrote itself: I was trying to write meta! This is based on the idea that Susan’s mother is in fact Jenny (from The Doctor’s Daughter) thanks to time travel, which is still my default headcanon for the Susan’s granny question, and I was quite impressed that my headcanon turned into an actual story with a plot and stuff. I regret that Jenny isn’t actually in the story more; maybe I’ll write more of her when I feel like I have more of a handle on her character.

3. “The Wrong Idea” (Doctor Who (1963) and whatever continuity Brax belongs in, T, Braxiatel and mentions of others, 1427 words). This fic is kind of a mess, but I think in a good way? At any rate it’s something that probably only I could have written, because the specific combination of niche lore interests is so... specific. It’s about Brax during, and after, the events of The Invasion of Time. I like the feeling of tension, and I always love exploring the concept that Time Lords Are The Worst.

4. The aforementioned Yuletide assignment: “Bestride the Narrow World” (Welcome to Our Village, Please Invade Carefully, Katrina and ensemble, G, 2502 words). This is a “missing episode”-style fic for a fantastic sci-fi radio comedy written by Eddie Robson (better known to many of you from Big Finish) and starring Hattie Morahan (better known to many of you... yeah). I’m still a little giddy over the whole experience of Yuletide, but I do also think I genuinely wrote something nice for thisbluespirit (who extra double deserves it for having made me aware of the show in the first place!). I’m always unsure about writing comedy when I start out, but I always have so much fun with it when I get into the swing of things.

5. “Blazon” (Doctor Who (1963), T, Seventh Doctor/Romana II, 500 words). It wouldn’t be a list of my fics without some Seven/Romana and some drabbles, and this drabble sequence is still what I think is the best of my Seven/Romana fics. It’s inspired by the titular blazon, which is a type of love poem that describes and praises the beloved’s physical features one by one. I always think drabbles are close to poetry in their brevity, constraint, and power, and these felt particularly like that.

I honestly have no idea if these are the actual best--they might just be the ones that were most rewarding to write rather than read--but there you go!

#107: Femininity and resistance in classic Western art!

Nope, I'm still not done talking about the Spymaster and his takeover of classic Western art in The Power of the Doctor.

Inspired by some comments from @sclfmastery, An ACTUAL Art Historian, I'm noticing an interesting theme in the Spymaster's artworks where he takes on the woman's role: the Mona Lisa [#101], Girl with a Pearl Earring [#102], and American Gothic [#106].

@sclfmastery observes, "He is anything but the passive ingenue willing to be consumed by the viewer." In all three cases where the Spymaster adopts the woman's role, he does so in a way that resists his objectification as a pretty thing.

In the Mona Lisa, he looks directly at the viewer, almost gloating, as he assumes the subject's famously mysterious air.

In Girl with a Pearl Earring, he faces away from the viewer, apparently indifferent to being looked at. @sclfmastery also adds, "[T]he Master is REFUSING the voyeuristic gaze of the Doctor by standing in profile, and upending the typical trope of the 'exotic Asian harem girl' by wearing a marker of aged, learned, and mature masculine identity (the beard)."

In American Gothic, he makes eye contact with the viewer, unwilling to be subsumed into a generic depiction of rural U.S. folklife.

In these three cases, the Spymaster takes on a feminine identity, one traditionally associated with passivity [i.e., sitting still for a portrait], being consumed [i.e., being watched by the audience], and being judged [i.e., being interpreted by the audience]. He turns the tables, though, by posing in ways that make him look like the spectator and judge. He also turns the tables by pasting himself as Ra-Ra-Rasputin over the original subjects, making it very clear that each painting means THE SPYMASTER. His genderbending in these three paintings becomes a way for him to resist stereotypical strictures of gender, to assert his own identity, and to state his identity as an active creator of his own reality, not merely the Doctor's dupe.

@sclfmastery posits that the Spymaster's use of the feminine role in these paintings may tie back to his time as Missy in the Vault. "[I]t says a lot about how vulnerable he may have felt as Missy–who identified as a woman, and who was...locked in a vault for 70-odd years. Never again will he be passive and complacent," she writes. What do you think?
