Chromeo & the Midnight – Terminal 5 – October 4, 2024
Montreal twosome Chromeo and L.A. synthwave duo the Midnight’s joint tour has found them funking up North America together, and Friday night at Terminal 5 was a whole lot more of that ’80s-influenced funky good time.

In what has been a life-altering experience, I got to see The Midnight perform at The Ritz in Ybor City this past Friday the 13th. (And yes, they DID perform the song "Jason," because obviously they had to!)
I even took part in the pre-show meet and greet where we got to hear acoustic versions of a few songs. And I even got to personally tell Tim and Tyler how their music essentially saved my soul during the worst parts of the pandemic.
This concert was everything I hoped for and more. I couldn't be any happier to have witnessed a performance that was just special for me than most others, and I'll never forget it for the rest of my life.
I hope you all out there get to share the same joy I did seeing The Midnight live as I have. Because in the dark, there are no strangers at all.

The most incredible night @ MTELUS in my beautiful home city of Montréal.
Girl Ultra brought the energy straight from La Ciudad de Mexico. She made me feel like I was clubbing down in Mexico with her amazing tunes.
Chromeo, the funk legends who are also from Montréal. (That always adds a little bias, doesn’t it?) They were so awesome. Such a good, sexy vibe and always great to have the lead singer leaning right over you. Merci les gars. C’était une soirée inoubliable.
The Midnight. Words cannot describe how special their set and performance was for me. Over the past almost two years they have become my absolute favourite musicians.
About half a year ago I bought myself a VIP ticket with the intention of seeing them and getting to spend the pre-show soundcheck with Tyler Lyle. This was also when I was at my worst and felt suicidal.
The Midnight have a beautiful song called “Gloria”, and it is one of my favourites. The chorus starts with “Oh Gloria, I, feel so much better, I, feel so much better, today.” This was the most emotional part for me because I do actually feel so much better today.
While Tyler performed this song, he came right up in front of me as I was by the barricade. He looked me in the eyes for a moment as I sang along with him. This was such a surreal, personal and special moment for me, especially because it was Gloria.
Thank you Tyler Lyle and Tim McEwan, for your music, your lyrics, your storytelling, and everything that you do. Thank you The Midnight🫶
Until next time✌️

Join THE MIDNIGHT, one of the world’s top synthwave bands, comprised of Tyler Lyle and Tim McEwan, on an electrifying and original sci-fi adventure inspired by the poetic storytelling and the neon-soaked aesthetics of their music.
Jason has spent his life running from his problems, but now he and his childhood sweetheart are on the precipice of parenthood, and he’s struggling with the loss of his adolescence. Then he re-discovers his favorite old video game, THE MIDNIGHT, a nostalgic 1980s fantasy adventure about a helmeted hero who travels to a cyberpunk world to save the people from eternal darkness. Seeking to repair his broken game, Jason ends up at a mysterious arcade in an abandoned 1980s mall, where he plays the old arcade game of The Midnight and suddenly he’s transported to…
…a post-apocalyptic Neverland in the year 2085.

Death of the Author and The Midnight's Deep Blue
I'm a former english major (and engineering major but thats less important). And I just have to say, one thing that is very important to media analysis is that it is so so so SO crucial to be wrong and fully believe and back your own findings. Yes, you can know the meaning, yes you can understand the "real" meaning and authorial intent, but at the end of the day, all art forms are intended to illicit emotion in the viewer. It doesnt matter if it is music, traditional art, movies, tv shows, books, anything. "The Death of the Author" is a lie.
The author's intent is always to bring emotion to the viewer, and to make the viewer believe in the world they've created for them, and thus they find themselves immersed in that world and find their own way around it.
Each work tells a story, but much like a story passed down through ages, bouncing off walls for centuries, every time that story meets a new person, it resonates in them differently. Each person walks away with a wholly unique experience, informed by their own unique lifestory.
Personally, I am transgender. When I consume media, I often end up comparing it to my own life experiences and finding unique meaning in it as a transgender person. Does that mean it is the "right" interpretation? No. But my own view on the media can make it special to me.
For example, let me break down one of my favorite songs of all time "Deep Blue" by The Midnight.
Deep Blue at it's core is a romance song, discussing how love can save you from your inner turmoil and that even something that seems small can blossom into something huge and meaningful. And I love it like that!
But- in my own trans journey, those lyrics resonant a new way. "I wasn't looking for action, just some distraction Just a little week night, booth in the back I wasn't looking for romance, just a quick slow dance On the off chance that an off night and a side glance Might lead me to the wrong hands." On the surface, it's just discussing a hookup, something that is meant just for a quick and cheap thrill. But- when I started my journey, I wasnt looking for a permanent action, it was just putting on a dress as a distraction, just a late night joke for my friends. I wasnt trying to change my whole life.
"I wasn't after forever, just for whatever I was one of the dark hearts who thought that they'd never Truly be opened, but this is an explosion Of star-crossed and blood-rushed And hair-tossed and cheeks flushed and weeks lost" Reiterates my previous explanation, I wasnt looking for forever, I was just in it for whatever, for a quick joke. I was a lonely recluse, depressed for years and years. And dear god, that dress was an explosion. Blood rushing to blushing cheeks, hair growing out longer and longer, and weeks lost to internal struggles of wondering if this is what I want.
“I said, "I've never felt my heart like this" She said, "I've never felt my body" I always thought the point of love was just To keep from, to keep from Falling into the deep blue, the deep blue Falling into the deep blue, the deep blue” I had never felt my own heart feel that heavy, I never felt like I had fit into my own body. It all came crashing down.
To me, Deep Blue is a story about one person, but through two different sides. The man being the past, and the woman being the future. A journey of self discovery from some small thing that cascades out of control. To me that’s always been the meaning. Is it correct? Hell no, I know Tim McEwan and Tyler Lyle definitely werent thinking about transgender stories when writing it, but to me, it is a deeply familar and comforting story.
That is why you sometimes have to approach media in a different way, you can’t just be taught the meaning of something and just accept it, you should go and find that meaning yourself. It might end up meaning a whole lot more. You can well and truly love and appreciate the original intention, and find something new and meaningful to you as well.

The Midnight Lyrics Appreciation Post
The city carved a silhouette
On the ocean after dark
Over the lonely and the holy
And the red blood beating hearts
Up from the dirty black water
The shadow void of form
Raised itself out of the river
And it climbed upon the shore
Neon on the black top
There's a gentle rain downtown
The shadow pooling underneath me
As it follows on the ground
Kissed you when I saw you
Stared deep into your eyes
I meant to say I love you
But instead I said goodbye
-Shadows
The problem with believers
They’ll let anyone in the door
The problem with deceivers
Is all the bodies buried under the floor boards
-Crystalline
Make our home, where we stand
One suitcase and half a plan
Follow the wolves and sing along
Past the voices to the song
They say it's darkest before the dawn
We've been in this town for far too long
They say it's darkest before the dawn
We're moving on, we're moving on, we're moving on
-Sunset
You'll always be a part of me
You gave me a song to sing
Dancing in your room
Innocent and true
Elvis tattoo on your shoulder
We'll know better when we're older
You'll always be a part of me
Some wounds will always sting
Forever in full bloom
Barely twenty two
Summer days are growing colder
We'll know better when we're older
-Memories
Memories and mountain tops
Drunk on sunset boulevard
With the city of angels singing on
Maybe this is just a dream
And maybe we’re still asleep
But I, I will miss you when I'm gone
Flickers of the canyon fire
It's hands raised like a gospel choir
If we live forever, let us live forever tonight
Helicopters against the moonlight
Our holy mother of the midnight
And if we live forever, let us live forever tonight
-Los Angeles
I've make mistakes and I've been hard hit
I say so what, so what if I did
I'm the clear eyed
I'm the comeback kid
It's been a rough year
Been some tough tears
I've lost so fast
All that I had
But when it's time to
I'll fight for you
'Cause you know you are
Why I've come so far
-The Comeback Kid
You move on a thousand times
New lover's shadows on the blinds
Your heart's a mercenary
But like a dancer on the wire
Come the sparks of frayed desire as the fire's carried
I'm just a ghost in your stereo
The fading memory of a shipwreck in the undertow
You're just a lost song I wrote
And I'm just a ghost in your stereo
-Ghost in Your Stereo
Called a curse in the cradle
Loving mother, unstable
Daddy gone, under the table
But you found a song in your heart
So you learned how to fight, how to starve, how to survive
When the others blocked your light you learned to see beyond the stars
The curse of small desires
Easily acquired
It's time to set your gasoline heart on fire
Kill your demons, kill 'em dead
In your mirror, in your bed
In your heart, in your head
Don't you look good in red?
Slay your devils, kill 'em all
Take your throne, paint the walls
And if you make it out alive, hold that bloody head up high
-Good in Red
I sink like stone
You seem to flow above the madness like wings on canvas
And all that I know
Is that I hear the notes through the darkness like a promise
Everything will always be exactly how it’s gonna be
Though I seem to worry every single day
This prodigal turns home again then morning comes and in the end
I see that new sun shining on your face
We begin to bend
We begin to mend
-Bend
Kids are sad, the sky is blue
There are monsters in the spare bedroom
Kids grow up and move away
They close the plant in the mall arcade
Kids are sad, their parents too
Kids get high in the spare bedroom
We grow up and move away
The seasons pass but the monsters stay
-Kids
