“You were the brightest shade of sun when I saw you. And surely, you will be the death of me, but how could I have known?”
done for 200 followers event!!
Sunny days were more than rare on Kuraigana Island. They were practically nonexistent. That was why, on the off chance a ray of sun made its way through the gloom, you could be found laying in it.
You were dozing, basking in the warmth of your lone sunbeam. Dry grass prickled the back of your neck, and you slid your arms behind your head to protect the sensitive skin. Your mind slipped in and out of your dreams, barely aware of the world as it moved around you. Distantly, you could hear Perona’s laugh, or the stomp of Zoro’s boots as he strode through the empty halls. There were no birds to chirp, no insects to tickle your cheeks. The only signs of life around you was the sparse garden you had started to add a splash of color to the gray.
You loved your garden, and you were starting to believe that your host did too. Unlike the land he tilled, it was mostly flowers. Mihawk was a hard man to read, but after a year of living with him, you were starting to get the hang of it. His golden eyes would linger on the colorful petals, and every so often, you could see his nostrils flare as he breathed in the sweet air. You could feel your lips twitch at the thought. He liked to group you in with those freeloading kids — freeloading kids you couldn’t help but be fond of — but you knew your worth.
Besides, it was easier to mooch off Mihawk’s warlord status rather than fight off swathes of marines yourself. Didn’t they ever get tired? You sure did.
Footsteps approached you from afar, and through your sleepy haze, you almost thought it was Zoro coming to steal your sunshine. If you were more awake, you would have recognized Mihawk’s near silent footfalls. They were distinct, far quieter than the other two— though you knew they were capable of it, you wished they chose to utilize said skill more often.
You ignored him, still under the impression he was Zoro, and continued to doze. Minutes passed, the intruder’s gaze soaking into your skin, past your flesh, and into your bones. Without meaning to, you fell into a deeper slumber, the slow rise and fall of your chest evening out ever so slightly. The feeling of fingers brushing through your hair caused you to stir. There was a pause in movement, before something tickled against your ear, and the hand pulled away.
It was a fleeting interaction, one you were sure you dreamed until you awoke an hour later, chilled to your marrow. The sun dipped behind the clouds yet again, leaving you cold and wanting for more. A weight against your ear caught your attention. Lips parted in surprise, you plucked a marigold from behind your ear and stared down at it.
“Where did you come from,” You muttered, twirling the stem between your thumb and forefinger. It was a beautiful shade of gold. It reminded you of Mihawk's eyes, and you couldn’t stop your heart from fluttering.
There was no denying there were feelings for the warlord brewing under the surface. He was a handsome man. His confidence was what drew you, but what made you stay was the softness he kept hidden. Mihawk could have kicked you out months ago, yet here you were, sleeping in the garden with a flower behind your ear.
“Enjoy your nap?” It wasn’t a question, not really. You rubbed the sleep out of your eyes and stared over at the lounging warlord, a glass of wine by his side as he read his book.
You pointed at him with the flower. “Was this you?”
Mihawk gave you a once over, his expression cool disinterest. “What does that little flower have to do with me?”
“Don’t play dumb.”
He was quiet for a moment, taking a lazy sip of his wine. “I do not ‘play dumb,’ Y/N.” His sharp eyes traveled from your face to the flower, and his lips pulled into the barest smirk. “Though I can’t say that color doesn’t suit you.”
“See! It was you, I was right.” Triumph flooded your face, your smile big and all encompassing. Mihawk studied your expression, eyes soft for a moment before they were back to the hardness you knew so well.
Mihawk stood, closing the gap between you in a few strides. To have a warlord towering over you while you sat in the grass should have been terrifying. All you could do was grin. He kneeled before you, plucking the flower from your hand. Your fingers felt empty without it. Holding your gaze, Mihawk stared deep into your eyes as he tucked it back behind your ear, fingertips grazing your jaw before he pulled away.
“You proved nothing but my point. Gold suits you.”
You snorted. “Like your eyes?”
He unfolded his legs and stood at his full height before offering you his hand. His palm was callused from years of swordplay, though his grip on your forearm was gentle
“Like the dawn,” Mihawk said.
His words were matter of fact, as if they weren’t enough to drown you. You stumbled, halfway off the ground. The only thing holding you aloft was Mihawk, whose stare never left your face, even while you gaped up at him. With a final tug, he hauled you to your feet. You stayed stock still, gaze firmly locked on his own, though he didn’t appear at all affected by the sincerity of his compliment. Not like you, at least. Mihawk frowned slightly and pulled a leaf from your hair. It fluttered to your feet.
“Close your mouth, dear, you’ll catch flies.” The pet name rolled off his tongue smoothly.
Your jaw snapped shut and a hint of amusement flitted across Mihawk’s face.
What if you were born to be dear to him? Although you wondered that for a while now, the words seemed to be caught in your throat. Of all the millions upon millions of people who inhabited this world, you sure you were made to slot inside his bones and meld your flesh with his. That, the first day you saw him, the only thing you could think was: at last.
That was too vulnerable, though. Instead of making a fool of yourself with sentiments and feelings that were better left unsaid, you picked up the leaf and set it on his shoulders.
“You’ll be the death of me, Dracule Mihawk.”
He sighed and flicked the leaf from his shoulders. “And you, me”

𝐚𝐨𝐭 𝐛𝐨𝐲𝐬 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐚 𝐛𝐥𝐚𝐜𝐤 𝐬/𝐨
this includes eren, levi, armin, connie, and jean
reading: black!fem!reader
genre: fluff
a/n: decided to bring this back while I’m redoing my page so don’t mind

━ 𝗘𝗿𝗲𝗻 𝗝𝗮𝗲𝗴𝗮𝗿
Y’all would definitely a power couple, the ones that rule the internet
You know those cute ones you find on Pinterest? That would be y’all, definitely De’arra and Ken vibes
Eren would be such a teaser, he would tease you like all the time, and definitely a tickler no matter how many times you tell him to stop
Every time you feel insecure about trying new colors or different hair styles, he’s gonna always convince you to do it
You would literally debate on big chopping your hair and he’ll convince you to go for it cause why? You’ll look beautiful no matter what
I feel his favorite old movie would be boyz in the hood
Randomly, he would scream that “RICKY!!” line like all the time
Eren would definitely let you braid his hair or let you try cute styles you find
Oh and you would do the style on yourself just to match and take pics, POWER COUPLE TINGZ 🥰
Eren would not take wash day seriously for his life 😭 mf would add either too much or too little of deep shampoo or keep splashing water around the shower, meanwhile you’re trying to deep condition your hair
Don’t worry, he’ll apologize after you beat his ass (you barely won though)
━ 𝗟𝗲𝘃𝗶 𝗔𝗰𝗸𝗲𝗿𝗺𝗮𝗻
Y’all would definitely be one of those rich couples
You know those rich aunties that are living their best life in bora bora while sipping mimosa? That’s y’all
You and Levi would live in like a mid-size mansion or a beautiful penthouse that has a nice view
Y’all bed is nothing but fine black or royal blue silk
All you two both know is Chanel, Dolce and Gabana, Prada, Givenchy, Armani, the list goes on
You two don’t know the broke life, y’all wouldn’t even dare to touch or enter the Gucci store
Only the fanciest restaurants for the fanciest couples
Wash days would turn into a bubble bath with you laying on Levi’s chest and him washing your hair for you while you’re sipping wine and ranting on about anything
I KNOW Levi be giving some bomb ass scalp massages, feel like his fingers were sent from Heaven
Now when it comes to actually getting your hair done, he’s running background checks and doing the utmost to make sure your hair tech isn’t a scam
Let someone talk about his beautiful wife, him AND your security guards are beating their ass
Now if y’all had a kid, WHEW CHILE 🚶🏾♀️
I feel like the world would try levi and give him a bad ass baybay kid (hopefully y’all know what I’m talking about 😭) or a prissy kid with his attitude
Either way, the kid is getting their ass whooped from either you or him
Now don’t get me wrong, he would be very overprotective of his kid and only accept THE FINEST for his kid
━ 𝗔𝗿𝗺𝗶𝗻 𝗔𝗿𝗹𝗲𝗿𝘁
You two would be those cute aesthetic couples, more so on the soft boy/indie vibes
You guys would have picnics dates like allll the time, of course, you don’t mind since this gives the chance to appreciate and learn more about one another
Everyday Armin would give you a fun fact he learned about us black folks, sometimes the fact would even shock you
Armin would definitely be a fan of the Black Panther Party
Wash days would just be him helping you and soft music playing in the background
Armin would take the time to do deep research about our culture
Your family would love him so much, he would always get snatched up by either your baby cousins or aunties every time you bring him to the cookout
Every time you get your hair or nails done, he’s always there next to you, chatting up a storm
The girlies in the salon shoot a glare cause of course they’re mad they didn’t bag a loving boyfriend like Armin
If he’s not there, he’s FaceTiming you or asking for pics in the end
Sometimes he’ll go above and beyond and wear outfits to match your new do and take pics
Every time you’ll feel down or not yourself, he would buy you small gifts like flowers or your favorite food to make it better
If that doesn’t work, he’ll let you sit or lay on his lap and listen to you rant, even if it’s about the most trivial thing
━ 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗻𝗶𝗲 𝗦𝗽𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗿
You two would be those goofy couples that roast each other all the time
You would say a minor thing like his shirt is inside out and he’ll joke about something about you, now y’all going back and forth till one of y’all almost die from laughing
You ever wonder why your bonnets go missing? It’s because of your boyfriend
The mf would walk around the house wearing it likes it’s nothing and misplace it
Until one day you catch him wearing it
You: Connie why are you wearing my bonnet?
Connie: They’re cute and I think I look good with them *insert lightskin face*
You: Boy give me my shit back, no wonder I keep losing them
Your biggest hype man EVER no matter what
You could just be washing the dishes in an oversized t-shirt, shorts, and a bonnet and he’ll hype you up
He just loves seeing your beautiful face 🥰
Now when you get your hair and nails done, he’s definitely showing you off, especially on Instagram
He’s taking multiple pics and multiple stories like a photographer and you’re out here feeling good about yourself
━ 𝗝𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝗞𝗶𝗿𝘀𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗻
Y’all would a chill couple, those couples that just mind their business and love each other
Every once in a while you guys would update social media, barely though
You two definitely do y’all skincare routine together and take cute pictures
Super indecisive whenever you ask him what color or hairstyle you should try next
At first, he would be nervous to ask you to help wash your hair but washed over it and decided to ask you, of course, you said yes
Just like Levi, Jean definitely gives one of the best scalp massages EVER
Except his massages would send you to sleep and you’re just laying on his chest, lightly snoring, while his fingers work magic
I feel like he would talk about having a kid of his own a lot. He would be so happy to have a mini mixed him running around (not to the point where he’s fetishizing though)
Dates with him would mostly consist of something chill like visiting an aquarium or staying home and watching movies
Jean would definitely have thousands upon thousands of questions if you were to show him a black movie though (especially a tyler perry one)
At this point, you would have to tell him to write his questions down so he wouldn’t interrupt

shoutout to anon cause this was my first ever request
decided to bring it back while I’m redoing my page
not to brag but it was my second biggest post also
bye babes, drink your water, stay hydrated, and remember that you are the baddest bitch on the planet 🥰 no matter what ANYONE says

We Are Happy For You.
Simeon x Fem!Reader
Continuation to my series.
Smut - with fluff and some world building.
You feel something touch your face, and you tug the blanket that covers you up over your face. There is a shift and the blanket is tugged down and the touch on your face repeats, a feather light touch. One that has you shrugging it off, you bury your face into the chest in front of you.
Instead of Simeon trying to tease your face again, you feel that same feather light touch along an ear. You press your ear to his chest, leaving the other exposed to his teasing. Simeon chuckles light, that usual one he emits when he is mischievous.
“Let me sleep! Simeon...” You weren’t on food duty for the morning, so that meant you could sleep in, till Lucifer called for you to join or miss out on a meal.
“Hmm... but I want to see your face.” You give into his polite demand, you turn your face to look up at him, snuggling closer into his side. Memories of the previous night earn a blush when you feel skin to skin beneath the blankets. You roam hands over his chest, you note he has really soft skin.
“There is my girl. You are stunning this morning.” You bury your face into his neck at his compliments.
“You’re being sweet again...” You mention, and Simeon hums happy at this, moving to tug you on top of him. You pull the blanket with you, leaving only your feet to stick out at the end. Simeon’s arms around your waist resting his hands on your back as you raise up propping your head on your hands to look at your angel.
“Can you blame me? I can do this everyday.” You simply lay on top of Simeon, your legs on either side of his almost straddling him but your waist sits a couple inches higher than his.
“Reminds me... how are you feeling Simeon? You mentioned..” Simeon sees the concern in your eyes.
“It’s a dull ache now, the worse of it has yet to happen.. I can trust you to be at my side when it happens?” You nod and press your forehead to Simeon’s nuzzling him affectionately. He hums when you rub his face and into his hair soaking up the attention you shower on him.
You begin to sit up and jump when you shift to sit on his lap. You eye Simeon, and he is sheepish casting his gaze to the side, his face flushing pink when you realize.
“Sorry, your hands just feel so good.” As you sit up fully, the blanket being shrugged off, you get a good look at your angel underneath you. His face still red from observing your nude form this way. You take mercy on him, your eyes roam over his torso muscular and toned from his arms and chest. You lean over him for your DDD to check the time, and note you still have enough time before anyone nosey would wander by your door.
“It’s okay, I like it that you are showing your desires more. Do you want me to take care of you?” You offer with a subtle push of your hips against his. You had shifted enough so that his erection was centered under your folds. The light grinding you do, he feels good rubbing between them.
“Please... I’ve been... wanting to do this before you were awake.” You press the flat of your hand to his face and let him lean against it. You lift your hips and Simeon reaches between you two to guide himself into you. A satisfied sigh out of the falling angel.
You make quick movements of yourself, raising and lowering to ride him. Simeon’s hands go to your waist guiding you to roll your hips to sink down on him further.
Simeon raises up enough to press kisses along your neck, nipping and moaning into the soft flesh as he wraps his arms around you. You allow him to adjust you both so you can wrap your legs at his waist and he sits in a way that feels so much more intimate. He is deeper, and you bury your face into his shoulder whimpering from how intense it feels.
“Endure me a bit longer my lamb..” You listen to him as he delivers a series of rough thrusts. One hits deep and you see stars.
“Simeon! Again there! Please!” He feels even better, and he notes that this spot he thrusts against has you drenching his cock in juices. You toss your head back at the pleasure washing through your body, Simeon watches you lose yourself to him. If you peeked at his face, his expression is lost in his own pleasure at seeing you so blissful, and him causing that feeling.
Your body feels alight, almost on fire itself. You felt so different in these last few sessions with him, you have been loving him with your entire being. Holding onto him, and he listens to you.
Simeon glides into you alot easier, and realizes you had cum on him. You didn’t even register you had done so, your body wanting more of the angel, even as he leans you down onto your back. He raises your waist and drives himself harder into you.
You grip the blanket beneath you as the angle Simeon has you in lets him hit your g-spot repeatedly. Simeon uses one hand to rub your clit as he moves. The motions he makes rolling his hips up as you meet his rocking yours back to feel his fingers circle and pinch light.
Your mind fuzzy and blank till your hands grip the blankets tighter and fully orgasm. A series of cries mixed with Simeon’s name, and panted moans. The gush of fluid against Simeon’s waist and how you clench around him tight making it hard for him to thrust through as he spends himself next to your cervix pressing as close as he gets.
Simeon sits down, still connected to you, he can’t pull free just yet till you relax. He enjoys the warmth surrounding him, but he enjoys the sight of you blissed out and panting even more.
When your mind comes back you look to your angel who smiles warm. You then feel embarrassed about how soaked your sheets are. You cover your face upon realization Simeon saw you lose absolute control of yourself.
“You are beautiful... you know that right? Don’t hide.” Simeon tugs your hands away from your face, he moves to lie on top of you. You feel his hands gentle as they tug yours, he sees how red your face is, and only kisses you sweetly.
“I... we... you... you saw me make such an embarrassing face..” You reach for the end of the blanket to cover your face creating a barrier between you and Simeon. He laughs at your shyness. You were not this shy the previous night or when you teased him with that apron.
“It is only me that sees you make that face too. Let me see you.” He cups your face, peppering kisses all over. It was your turn to soak up his attention he dotes on you. You adjust your legs a little and realize he is still connected. You feel your face heated up, and Simeon moves to pull out finally after you relaxed enough.
You both bask together a little longer before the time when Lucifer usually wakes up and roams occurs. You and Simeon steal away into a shower together, playfully splashing the other, and sitting together once you washed each other thoroughly.
You strip your bed of its covers and sheets to have them done later. You would ask Asmodeus for spare sheets, being one you trust for the reason “why” yours were soiled.
You get the message from Satan to hurry downstairs for breakfast, you and Simeon take a breath together before joining them.
“Simeon? I didn’t know you dropped by.” Lucifer comments, you sit next to your angel and the open spot where Beelzebub sits. Lucifer is fully aware of your relationship with the angel. He has spent his time warning you of events that can and may happen as a result. Other than that he does not meddle and lets you both experience love for yourselves.
“I came by last night, and stayed over.” He is honest, and Lucifer reads between the lines of what it meant. The few at the table, Satan, Beelzebub and Asmodeus. Mammon and Belphie have yet to arrive being late risers. Leviathan probably not at all, he was doing a raid night for one of his games.
“I could tell you everything you already know, Simeon. Just be careful and take care of her. She chose you, and we’ll do our best to protect you both from repercussions.” Lucifer says, and you both nod.
“Thank you.” You swat Beelzebubs hands away from yours and Simeon’s plates, guarding it with a spoon. Simeon leans against you, he felt warm to you, perhaps a little too warm. You would tug him aside later.
Asmodeus looks at you and Simeon, a knowing grin on his face. For why you both seem so tired this morning. You eye him weary, in warning. You expected more lectures from Lucifer about your relationship with Simeon. Yet he understood the place, he was probably the best one to talk to later about Simeon’s falling. Yet you wonder if he would revert back to being protective over Simeon or you to tell Simeon he is better off stopping to preserve his rank and grace.
Another thought creeps into your mind, what would Luke say to all of this. You were staring at your plate absentminded enough for Beelzebub to steal a few pieces of food before Simeon swats his hand with the back of a spoon.
The falling angel can tell you are thinking about the effects of what is happening, who you might be making angry, or disappointed. Simeon doesn’t chide you this time in front of others. Your feelings are valid in it, you and him both could face persecution, you more than him.
Satan looks between you two, keeping personal comments to himself, this was not the time to be sarcastic with such a serious expression on your normally smiling face.
Asmodeus on the other hand had moved his chair to the other side of you, and took up one of your hands to inspect your hands. Satisfied still with his color of choice. His touch broke you out of your thoughts, and you see him look to your eyes, a quiet hum in question. His eyes drift to your neck and you see the smirk on his face.
“You should come by my room before you head off to RAD. I have something for you.” He notes how many hickies are left, almost hard to believe that Simeon is capable of marking so much skin. Yet these were over the span of a few days when you had your sleepover with the angel.
“Okay, I need a favor anyways.” You smile back as Asmodeus leans on you and rubs his face to your shoulder. Needing the little bit of affection from one of his pact keepers before he sees Solomon to fill more of that need.
Simeon doesn’t mind the affection, specially when Asmodeus moves over to him to seek out head pats. Simeon lets Asmodeus lean on him, if you or him would ever be open to a polyamorous relationship the first that comes to mind is Asmodeus without question. That was a conversation for when you two decide to invite someone else into your intimate space. Right now that was not an option when you and Simeon still needed to explore each other and grow.
You had finally finished your food, letting Beelzebub take the remainder happily rather than keep fighting him off. You could always take a few more snacks from the cafeteria. Or Luke might give you something before class, he usually does knowing Beelzebub.
Soon you were seated on a chair in front of Asmodeus’ vanity with the lust demon tugging the collar down of your top. Simeon sat on the edge of Asmodeus’ bed watching the exchange.
“Simeon really went crazy here. He needs to be mindful not to mark your lovely skin so much.” You tilt your head so Asmodeus can apply a lotion to them to help ease the bruising left, and covers it with make up to avoid questioning stares from people who are not aware of your sexual relationship with Simeon yet. Asmodeus casting a stare over to the angel whose eyes were transfixed on a wall nearby. A dark blush on his face.
“He did, and I’ll make sure to have him leave them where... they’re not easily seen.” Asmodeus gives an amused hum, as he finishes the application.
“There that should do. Now you had a favor for me?” You look at his eyes, seeing the way they gleam.
“Um.. yes. I need some sheets for my bed...” You look away sheepish and Asmodeus catches on.
“Ah, until yours are clean right? I can give you a set I don’t care for anymore.” Asmodeus doesn’t need to ask, or pry further. He also rather just give you a set knowing that the nature of your relationship is much more intimate rather than expecting sheets he knows you and Simeon slept on together.
“Thank you.” You beam at Asmodeus, he goes through his closet and comes back with two sets. A deep blue and a cream colored set.
“I do have a request as a payment though. You must get me some wicked cupcakes from Barbatos. I absolutely love the ones he makes. He manages to make them with this lemon rose buttercream I just can’t get enough of.” Asmodeus clasps his hands together looking at you hopeful.
“I think that can be managed.” You look over at Simeon.
“Easy, I can give him more Celestial Pure Tea.” Barbatos can’t refuse that trade with it being a favorite. Asmodeus smiles warm, and sees you two out of the room after supplying the sheets.
You and Simeon go back into your room to make the bed, in time before you wander out to RAD together. After putting your blankets back on top, you find yourself snared by Simeon, and the falling angel walks you backwards till you fall on top of the bed with him over you.
“Simeon!?” A kiss pressed to your lips, and Simeon hugging you to him as he climbs over the top of you. You realize he is wearing the clothes he wore last night. He feels warm to your touch, and you smooth your hands up into his hair to rub. You feel along the sides of his head, feeling two nubs forming. You wonder when those started.
“Let me kiss you please. My head.. keep rubbing it please?” You let him do as he pleases, your hands massaging his head around the spots you found. Finding him pushing closer, he felt too warm, and you could feel him burying his face into the softness of your cheek.
“Are you hurting?” You check on him, and feel little kisses along your cheek.
“I won’t lie... it hurts alot right now. Your hands though... they feel nice right now... cold to my head.” You brush a hand on his forehead feeling it burning, you want to see his face, but Simeon keeps it buried into your neck not wanting you to see him grimacing or pained.
Your angel does turn his face to press repeated kisses to your lips. You reach a hand down the front of his abdomen, and he stops your hand from slipping below the hem of his pants.
“Later please. We’ll be late or won’t make it out of the room if you touch me now.” You look into his eyes, and see the blue irises taking an almost greener look to them. He nods to your question in your eyes that this is part of his falling. The pain and fever. The knots forming on his head were horns. Still hidden by hair, outward he looks no different. Unless you look closer to his face.
Simeon takes a larger breath of air, and sighs in relief, as the wave subsides. He needed your affection most, you wonder if he was slightly jealous of Asmodeus when he sought your affection. Simeon knows Asmo to be affectionate like that, but you are in a closed relationship with Simeon. You would remember to not do that in front of your angel as he needs you more.
Simeon gets up and helps you up pulling you into a full embrace. It feels different than his usual hugs, like he is afraid to let go, that you’ll slip away from his hands.
“May I be selfish?” You hear his question, you look up as his gloved hand touches the side of your face thumb rubbing your cheek affectionately.
“I think you are allowed to be.” You see him smile.
“Can I stay another night with you? I can’t face Luke tonight, I know... I’ll change tonight. I also need to tell him today. Will you help me break this news to him? Please... be understanding of his feelings, he might say some things that will be hurtful. I was in charge of him, and I let him down in a way.” You can see his eyes downcast at the idea of disappointing Luke this way. Simeon had been thinking about him as much as you have been. How will the cherub take it, with his feelings towards demons, and still growing to learn and accept them. This might undo everything Simeon worked for.
“Of course I will be there and you can stay. We should tell Lucifer first... and Diavolo.” You know you can’t hide the falling from Lucifer, he has already sensed it, he just wants you to tell him and not keep it secret, per your bond with the fallen. He wants you to seek him out when things are hard like this. Diavolo needs to know to be ready to barter with the heavens about Simeon. That Simeon belongs to the Devildom now, and as a resident to be safe from their judgements and possible try for execution. You are willing to give up returning to the human world as an exchange.
“Agreed... Diavolo last though? I need to prepare myself for talking with him.” Simeon lowers his head for more head rubbing. You run your hands through his hair and enjoy the little appreciative sounds out of him.
“You really enjoy this.” You see him light up with a blush.
“Well.. your hands feel so nice. They’re healing to me.” You keep your hands rubbing while Simeon takes repeated kisses, feverish ones, if you two didn’t have to make an appearance at RAD you would stay and be with him. Let him seek the comfort he really needs from you without prying eyes, questions about being late, or missing days because you are helping Simeon through a spell.
The last few kisses Simeon leaves on your lips leaves your head spinning, and you realize you two have been lost in time that you hear footsteps outside the door. The footfalls you know well in Lucifer’s.
“Don’t be late you two. You should get going.” You disentangle from Simeon and poke your head out of the door gazing up at Lucifer, he has his arms folded eying you weary.
“We won’t be late.” His eyes lower then raise to the crack in the door to see Simeon behind you with his ever present smile. Lucifer studying both of you.
“If you need anything let me know.” You look over your shoulder and open the door more for Lucifer, inviting him in. He sees the silent invitation and walks in. He looks Simeon over, the falling angel casts his gaze to the side, avoiding Lucifer’s scrutinizing stare. He was being read in his demeanor.
“It’s begun, hasn’t it?” His voice is not chastising, or sorrowful. Stating a fact, wistful almost.
“You can tell?” You question.
“Of course I can tell. I knew from breakfast.” Simeon raises his gaze.
“I figured you would tell me on your own time. When you could trust me with this information.” Lucifer approaches Simeon and places his hands on either side of his head. He feels the knots for horns, and gives him a head rub of his own.
“What do we do then?” Your question comes out trying to figure out how to help Simeon through the boughs of pain and fevers.
“The only things that can be done is, he repents and seeks out Michael, or he accepts his fall and we’ll just have to make room for him here in House of Lamentations. I want you to talk to Diavolo and Barbatos before you speak to anyone else about it. How many others know about it?” Lucifer asks looking at you.
“Asmodeus knows. I confided in him last night.” Lucifer nods slightly.
“He’ll thankfully keep something like this a secret. Now, go straight to Diavolo after here. He needs to know. The more you keep it a secret the worse it will be.” Lucifer instructs and you snap straight to attention at his words knowing it is an order to do so.
“Right!” Simeon nods, he wanted to tell Luke next, but Lucifer is right, the further he gets, the more it is hard to hide it from anyone. Luke would have to be told after Diavolo and Barbatos. Chances are like Lucifer they already know. Barbatos would without fail. Diavolo, it is hard to keep anything from him for long. He’s more like Lucifer, he wants you to come to him when you have problems and seek his consult out on your own than when things get worse. Such like the events of Belphegore.
You and Simeon leave together out of the room. Lucifer calls out to both of you.
“Whatever happens, know this. We’re happy for you. We’ll do whatever necessary to protect you both.” You give him a soft smile, before Lucifer shoos you off to go talk to Diavolo.
“One more thing.” You look over your shoulder, almost frustrated at being stalled longer.
“Yes?” You ask.
“Please be sure to keep the noise you make down at night. It was hard focusing on paperwork hearing you both.” Lucifer smirks when both of your faces turn bright pink. You were about to say something when Simeon ushers you out pushing you before anything more can be said.
You both prepare yourselves mentally to talk to Diavolo. You hope he will be understanding and helpful of your plights.

♫ Ready to Start by Arcade Fire
August TBR!
Keeping it cool, the goal approachable. Since dropping booze I’ve been reading more books; a better oblivion. I’m about 70 pages into The Summer Book and it’s inspired my plans for after I graduate: if possible I’d like to get away for two months next summer and stay a place quite rural by a coast (“It was nice and cool under the pine trees and they weren’t in any hurry, so they slept for awhile,”). My only goal is to sit and be bombarded by sea scents. I’m thinking Nova Scotia, since I can drive there. It will take me some time but I can drive there, and I could keep the windows down and let my hair move like fingers of memory ‘round my head. I try not to over-romanticize all the things I want to do, but then how would I get excited?
Favourite chapter of The Summer Book so far is “Midsummer.” This chapter brings us, as if by random tide, an aloof islander named Eriksson who doesn’t say much or smile ever but still somehow inspires admiration in the spirits of everyone he comes across. “One of the attractive things about Eriksson was that he didn’t talk about himself. He never seemed to feel the urge.” God I need to be like that. I also love to read about natural celebrations, if that’s the way to put it, like solstices. Cool to see Grandmother and Sophia and Papa and Eriksson all lean into the natural world, so simply, like exhaling. Being in the natural world would take me a lot of effort; faced with a big body of water my first avenue is fear.
Tove Jansson possesses this skill of writing the good and the bad and making both somehow neutral, yet nourishing, yet painful. Just what it is. “Everything was salvaged, some by the right hands and some by the wrong, but nothing was simply lost…By dawn, the sea was empty. The wind died. The rain stopped. A clear and lovely Midsummer morning arranged its colors in the sky, and it was very cold.” It makes you want to go by the sea and have the salt splash your face and the foam sting your eyes delicious. Then you go inside and warm up by the stove and have a nice sandwich thick with butter and cheese and pickles.
For five days at the end of this month I’ll be in Vermont. I want to read Boy’s Life there. I usually try not to read books longer than 250 pages, this helps me finish them, but Boy’s Life clocks in at 608, which though heavy makes it a perfect read for a trip away. Someone on Goodreads (I don’t rate books, just log them) described this book as being part of a trifecta with IT by Stephen King and Summer of Night by Dan Simmons, with Boy’s Life being the least scary of the three. Good place to start. And the book’s opening poem sold me:
“We ran like young wild furies, where angels feared to tread. The woods were dark and deep. Before us demons fled. We checked Coke bottle bottoms to see how far was far. Our worlds of magic wonder were never reached by car. We loved our dogs like brothers, our bikes like rocket ships. We were going to the stars, to Mars we’d make round trips. We swung on vines like Tarzan, and flashed Zorro’s keen blade. We were James Bond in his Aston, we were Hercules unchained. We looked upon the future and we saw a distant land, where our folks were always ageless, and time was shifting sand […]”
I love small town shit, even better when things get a little scary
Hey! Long live suburban August! You’re drop dead bored till the night is yours, right?

It's A Promise (Barry x Reader)
so sinnoh remakes (and premakes?!) has been confirmed and of course the first thing I had to do was write a short fic on one of my favorite rival of all time
Sorry but I had to ten year old me had a massive crush on this character lol
writing; short story
word count; 2781
genre; friendship & hurt/comfort (very subtle romance)
reader; gender neutral
au; takes place after the events of DPPt (also Barry has freckles if that counts)
summary; your plans for summer has been hijacked by a certain hyperactive boy
Image

Half asleep you heard the Starlys chirp and trill and the Kricketots chime in harmony with one another, announcing the arrival of morning. You shifted slightly in bed, pulling the covers closer to you and yawned. The best feeling in the world you believe was hearing the sound of the world rousing to the start of a new day and knowing you didn't have to wake up along with it. With a content sigh you roll on your side, slowly drifting off to sleep...
Tap! Tap! Tap!
You furrow your brows slightly at the sound but quickly relaxed, smiling softly to yourself...
TAP! TAP! TAP!
You assume it was just a Starly or two messing outside your window so you chose to ignore it, opting to pull the covers over your head. You sighed again, this time in annoyance, as you try to fall asleep...
Click! Scree!
"Psst! (Y/N), are you sleeping?"
Your eyes open in disbelief as you immediately recognize the voice and just process the fact that he happen to somehow open your bedroom window to ask the obvious. 'Say it ain't so.’ You turned to face your window to see Barry there, arms resting on top of the sill as he watched you with a curious expression which was soon beaming with excitement once he saw you. "Oh good, you're awake!" Like you weren't sleeping to begin with.
"Wha? Barry what are you doing here?" You asked groggily. "Aren't you suppose to be at Pastoria City with Wake?"
"It's summer, duh! Crasher Wake gave me the week off and since your school is closed for vacation I thought it was perfect to catch up and hang out together this week!" Barry had this lively vibe around him that practically made him glow like a ray of sun leaving you dizzy with exhaustion. You plop back in bed with a groan knowing your plans to sleep in till afternoon for the whole week was ruined. "So at first I was thinking of going to the Great Marsh like we use to for old time sake" Barry began as he climbed right in sitting at your windowsill. "But I heard today would reach the hottest temperature ever in Sinnoh history!"
"Really now?" You asked in a monotonous voice. How hot can it possibly be in the coldest region in the world.
"Get this, 72 degrees! Can you believe it?!" As someone who was born and raised in Hoenn, a region where temperatures can reach up to the high 90s during the late summer you weren't exactly impressed. "So change of plans! We're going to spend the day at Sandgem Beach so pack your things!"
You glanced at the digital clock on your bedside. It read 6:22AM. "Barry it's too early! Can't we go like at 10 or something?"
"No way! We have to go now otherwise it'll be full if we go any later!"
"When is Sandgem Beach ever full!? You can barely even call it a beach!" You turned away from your friend, wrapping yourself up in your blanket. You were not getting out of this bed.
"Come on (Y/N)!" Barry whined. "We haven't hung out in so long! I literally spent all night planning this week out and you're just going to turn me down?! If Lucas and Dawn were here they would've agreed in going!" You can hear the irritation in his voice but underneath it was a hint of dejection. Shortly after your journey with the trio came to an end things changed. Dawn moved to the Kalos region a year ago to continue her study on Pokemon and just a few months afterwards Lucas left to Unova for reasons unknown though you had a hunch that it had something to do with that officer Looker. Barry spend most of his days at Pastoria’s gym, training intensely with Crasher Wake. As for you your parents never supported your dreams of becoming a Pokemon Trainer and your battling skills were left to be desired so you dropped it to continue your studies and follow a more reasonable career.
Although you didn't look at him you can feel him gazing at you, presumably with a pout or with Lillipup eyes. You groaned in defeat. "Fine."
Barry barely let you finish your sentence as he responded, "Really? Awesome! Don't forget to bring your Pokemon along with you, alright? And don't show up late otherwise I'll fine you!" With that he jump out your window and let out a yelp. "Don't worry! I'm alright!"
You sighed, wondering how anyone could have so much energy so early in the morning as you practically dragged yourself out of bed to start the day.
︵‿︵‿︵‿︵‿︵
Sandgem Town was quiet, the majority of the residents still asleep or just starting their day. You haven’t been in Sandgem in quite a while yet walking down the somewhat familiar road invoked a nostalgic feeling. You paused, looking at the houses on the street till you spot the familiar lab down the road. Professor Rowan’s lab. It almost felt like yesterday when you took your first step through Route 201 alongside your friends Lucas and Barry (although the latter practically raced his way there) to get here with your first Pokemon, Riolu. You couldn't help but smile at the memory before going on your way to Sandgem Beach. And, as you predicted, it was empty saved for Barry.
He stood at the edge of the boardwalk, his back facing you as he perform some stretching exercise. His team was already out of their Pokeballs, enjoying themselves. Infernape was meditating, Roserade, Snorlax, and Staraptor were sunbathing, Floatzel was swimming, and Heracross was attempting to bury itself in the sand, seeking warmth. Taking out three Pokeballs from your belt you released your team: Lucario, Lopunny, and Vaporeon. Your Pokemon looked around their surroundings before glancing up at you in surprise. When was the last time you actually brought them somewhere that wasn't home or your school’s campus? “Go on you guys. Have fun!” With that said your Pokemon went off to do their own thing.
Lucario sat beside Inferape, joining it in meditation and Lopunny bounded excitedly over to its long time crush, Roserade, the Bouquet Pokemon vastly annoyed that its peace was disrupted as it escaped from its crushing grip. Lastly, Vaporeon decided to take a swim, dipping into the ocean and blending itself into its surroundings, disappearing from sight.
The commotion between Lopunny and Roserade caught Barry's attention as he looked over to notice you. "Too slow!" He yelled running over to you. Not even giving you a chance to say something he grabs your arm and drags you over to the boardwalk. Once he lets go he begins to take off his shirt.
"Ready for what?" You asked.
“Barry!” You never saw your friend shirtless before so you couldn't help but feel flustered. Though he didn’t seem to care as he carried on anyways. As you assumed, Barry had a lean figure, what you didn't expect however was the amount of freckles he had. Although Barry had freckles dusting his cheeks and nose they were barely noticeable compared to the ones on his back and shoulders which were far more prominent. Realizing you were staring longer then normal you quickly turned away, trying to hide the awkward blush.
Luckily, Barry didn't notice. "Ready?"
"To swim!"
You look down at the blue water before dipping a bare foot in. It was ice cold. "It's freezing!" You exclaimed.
"It's not that bad!"
"Thanks but I pass" you said, waving a hand dismissively.
Barry pouted but it was soon replaced with a mischievous smile. "Alright then, suit yourself." He said, surprising you. Barry wasn't one to easily let things go without trying to convince you first. He's up to something, you know it. You were about to ask but he had already left your side as he jump right into the water, splashing you head to toe causing a sharp gasp to escape your lips from the sudden shock of being doused in icy water. Barry pop back up to the surface with a triumphant smirk, his bright eyes gleaming with playfulness.
"You suck!" You yelled causing him to laugh as he dived back underwater. Soaked to the bone there really was no point in staying out of the water in hopes of drying off soon, not with this cold breeze that made it impossible to warm up. You remove your hoodie and shorts revealing your (color) swimsuit before setting them down on the boardwalk and slipping into the water. Since you were already cold the frigid water didn't get to you, feeling more welcoming then before.
You looked around for your rival, trying to spot the blonde in the murky water but only saw his Floatzel which was lazily floating around. "Barry?” Something suddenly grabbed onto your ankle causing you to scream in surprise and flailing to get away, kicking away whatever touched you.
Barry appeared right beside you, clutching his left cheek. "Ow! Seriously?! You just kicked my face!"
"Well you shouldn't have grabbed me like that!" You said. He only stick his tongue out at you before swimming over to the boardwalk, crossing his arms and resting his head atop of it. You watched him as he stared up at the blue sky with a content expression, droplets of water clinging on to his hair as it shined in the morning light. Seeing him like this gave you the same flustered feeling from before. You couldn't quite wrap your head around as to why though. You’ve known him since kindergarten. So why all of a sudden you felt awkward around him?
"What’s up?" You didn’t even realize that he had stopped gazing up at the sky in favor of looking at you.
“What do you mean?” You said, turning elsewhere though it was in vain since he already caught you this time around.
“You were staring at me just now. It was pretty weird.” You try to think of something to say, mainly to defend yourself but to your relief he changed the subject. “So how’s school?”
You shrugged. “It’s alright. Senior year isn’t difficult compared to the other years since we’re more focused on applying for college.”
“Do you know where you want to go?” You noticed his words were a bit quiet and reserved unlike his usual chipper and noisy self.
“Well I was hoping to go to University of Unova since it’s known for having the best (career) course” you explained. “Though my parents aren’t too keen on me going that far so I might just stick to Goldenrod University.”
“I know that but...” He trailed off for a moment, thinking of what to say. “Can’t you just go to Canalave College instead?”
“Goldenrod!?” Barry’s sudden sharp tone made you flinch. “Why so far?” He was looking at you with a hurt expression that made you feel guilty despite the fact you didn’t do anything wrong. At least, you felt like you did nothing wrong.
“Well compared to Unova which is practically halfway across the world. Johto is just south of Sinnoh.”
“Barry, Canalave College doesn’t even have programs on what I’m going for.”
“Ugh, this is why I’ve always hated school” Barry grumbled, letting go of the boardwalk just to sink further into the water leaving just his eyes visible to you, glaring down at nothing in particular. He almost resembled that of a pouting child.
You didn’t understand why he was so upset about your plans or why he was trying to make you change your college decisions. Unless… “You don’t want me to leave?”
Barry barely let you finish your sentence as he quickly got up. “It’s not that!”
“Then what’s the problem?” You pressured.
At this point Barry wasn’t even looking at you, opting to just randomly glance around the area. “There is no problem! It’s just...” With a sigh he finally looked at you. Honey colored eyes stared at your (e/c) ones, his cheeks gaining a bright shade of pink. “I thought even though Lucas and Dawn left at least I still have you around.”
You couldn’t help but frown. You didn’t realize just how attached Barry was to you and the others until now. Naturally you felt bad but you certainly couldn’t change your plans for him either as much as it hurts you to see him like this. “I’m sorry. I didn’t think you would be this upset about it but it’s just how it is. Eventually we have to go our own way to live our lives. Right now you’re training with Crasher Wake to become one of the best Pokemon Trainer ever. At some point you’re going to leave Sinnoh to follow that dream, right?” He remained silent but nodded in response. “Just because we’re not going to be together like old times doesn’t mean we’re no longer friends. You’ll always be my best friend no matter what.”
“Yeah, you’re right. I guess I was being over dramatic.” You couldn’t help but smile when you saw his expression brighten. That was until he started giggling leaving you perplexed.
“Huh? What’s so funny?” You asked
“Sorry I just found the whole ‘you’ll always be my best friend’ bit kind of cheesy.”
“I was trying to cheer you up you douche!” You snapped unable to control your blush of embarrassment as Barry continued laughing. Seeking petty revenge you bought your fingers to your lips and let out a sharp whistle. Without warning your Vaporeon splashed out between you both before spouting water right in his face. He sputtered in surprise as he attempted to shield himself.
“So that’s how it’s going to be huh?” He challenged before calling for his Floatzel who immediately appeared by his side. Already getting the cue of what was going on the Pokemon retaliated by spraying sea water over you by spinning its propeller-like tails. Oh, it’s on now. Barry however was already a step ahead of you as he mounted onto his Pokemon’s back. “Good luck trying to catch me Slowpoke!” He taunted with a smirk before promptly swimming away from you. You knew Vaporeon was nowhere near as fast as Floatzel but you sure as hell weren’t going to let him get away so easily. You got on Vaporeon’s back and began swimming after the two, unable to contain the childlike excitement and determination you were getting from the chase.
︵‿︵‿︵‿︵‿︵
For the first time since you moved to the chilly region you truly felt the warmth of summer in Sinnoh. You and Barry sat on a bench right outside Sandgem Beach, not bothering to change out of your swimsuits as you ate popsicles and watch the afternoon go by. Residents glance at you both with odd looks since beachgoers rarely, if ever, visit their town but neither of you mind at all. After having that impromptu water fight you both decided to have a Pokemon battle, for old time sake. Of course you lost but you didn’t mind. Its been so long since you felt the fun and adrenaline that battles gave you that you completely forgot why you enjoyed them so much in the first place.
“Hey (Y/N)?” You looked at Barry who took a small bite from his orange creamsicle. “I know I said it was cheesy but is it true? I’ll always be your best friend no matter what?”
“Of course. I wouldn’t lie to you about that.” You had just finished your (flavor) popsicle, dumping the stick in the trash can beside you. He remained silent and although he said he was fine you notice still a hint of sadness in his expression as he stared off in the distance. Placing a hand on his shoulder you diverted his attention to you as you beamed at him. “It’s a promise.”
There was a sudden shimmer in his eyes and you wonder if he was tearing up when he quickly rub at them. “It better be otherwise I’ll fine you ten million PokeDollars if you replace me!” You couldn’t help but giggle, Barry joining in.
“So what’s the plan tomorrow?” You asked.
“Well I was thinking the Great Marsh maybe. If you’re fine with that.”
You nodded. “I bet I can catch more Pokemon then you.” You smirked when his smile faded into an annoyed expression.
“As if! I’m totally going to kick your ass!” He said swatting away your hand when you attempted to ruffle his hair just to irk him.
Needless to say, you were pretty glad he woke you up this morning.

Diabolik Lovers GRAND EDITION for Switch ;; More, Blood ー Kou [After Story]
ー The scene starts outside by the lake
Kou: Oooi, Yui! This way!
Yui: Ah, yeah! I’ll be right there!
Kou: This lake is so pretty! The water is crystal clear!
*Splash*
Kou: Also, look! The sky is reflected on the water’s surface, dyeing it a beautiful blue color!
I can take a picture while we’re here, right?
*Snap*
Yui: ...Fufu.
Kou: Whaaat? Why are you laughing? Did I do something?
Yui: No, that’s not it. I didn’t mean it like that...
Seeing you have such a good time is making me happy as well.
Kou: Oh, that’s it? Of course I’m happy!
After all, there’s such a beautiful blue sky spread out right in front of me!
Yui: ( He’s right...I’m underneath such a pretty clear sky together with Kou-kun... )
( I feel blessed too. )
Kou: Say, Yui. Let’s look at the photos in the shade of the trees over there.
Our collection has grown quite a bit already.
Yui: Yeah!
ー They walk towards the shade
Kou: Let’s see...
Yui: Wah! So pretty...
Kou: These...If I recall correctly, we took them in the country we stayed at up till recently, right?
There’s not a single cloud in sight, it really just screams ‘the blue sky’!
Yui: Ah, this is a picture of the sunset.
We took it right as the sun was setting, so the blue and orange hues are mixing together, it really is beautiful.
Kou: You’re right.
I still like the blue sky the very best, but I’m quite fond of this sunset as well.
Yui: Really?
Kou: Yeah. It feels like the boundary between day and night, giving off a mystical vibe.
Yui: Mystical...
Kou: Ah. You just made fun of me a little, didn’t you?
Yui: I-I didn’t!
Kou: I wonder~? What you’re thinking always shows right away on your face, you know.
Yui: I swear I didn’t...! I was just wondering what exactly a ‘mystical’ vibe is like...
Kou: Whatever~
Yui: Geez...Hm?
Kou: Ah.
Yui: I-Is this...a photo of me!?
( I’m asleep...Which means... )
...You took this in secret?
Kou: Ahーah, I’m busted, huh?
Yui: Come on! Kou-kun! Taking pictures of me in secret is so mean!
Kou: Sorry, sorry~ But your sleeping face was just too cute, you know...
...Say? Forgive me? ...Nn.
*Smooch*
Yui: Nn...
...Guess I have no other choice.
Kou: Ehehe. Thank you!
Since you’ve forgiven me...Ey!
ー He lays his head on her lap
Kou: A lap pillow...You don’t mind, right?
Yui: ...It’s embarrassing.
Kou: Who cares? We’re the only two people here anyway. Right?
Yui: Y-Yeah...
Kou: Ah, but you make the cutest expressions when embarrassed, so can I take a picture?
Yui: N-No way!
Kou: Eeh~ That’s a shame.
Yui: ( Geez...Kou-kun... )
( But...Right now, he seems very precious like this... )
Kou: Ah, look at this picture.
Yui: Which one?
Kou: This one. I wanted to take a picture of the starry sky, but it wouldn’t show up very well...
I guess this old camera we got just doesn’t cut it?
Yui: You got this one from a cameraman you knew through your job, right?
Kou: Exactly. When he gave it to me, I never thought I would actually use it one day.
But right now, it has really proven its worth.
After all...There’s tons of skies inside this roll of film.
Yui: Yeah...You’re right.
ー Yui looks up at the sky
Yui: ( Ever since we left Kaminashi City... )
( We’ve been traveling around the world. )
( Visiting various places, experiencing different emotions (1)... )
( And every time we look up at the sky, Kou-kun will happily press the shutter of this camera. )
Kou: ...Why have you suddenly gone quiet?
Yui: No, it’s nothing.
Kou: Really? Okay then.
Being able to spend time together with you under the blue skies...
And resting my head in your lap like this really puts me in the best mood.
Yui: K-Kou-kun...
( Hearing him point it out again made me embarrassed. )
Kou: ...That just leavesーー There we go.
*Rustle*
Say, Yui. I’m a little thirsty...
Yui: Eh!? ...Ah, yeah...
W-Will this work...?
Kou: Yeah...Perfect.
I honestly never thought a day would come on which you willingly offer yourself like that.
Yui: That’s...I mean, right now I really have no reason to push you away...
Kou: ...!
...Geez...Don’t come complaining to me later after stirring me on like that.
Yui: Eh? Did I say something?
Kou: Not reallyー...!
*Rustle*
*Thud*
Yui: Kyah...!?
*Rustle*
Kou: ...Thanks for the meal~
ー Kou bites her
Kou: ...Nn...Nn...
...Nn...Haah...Your blood really is so delicious...
Yui: ...
( How strange... )
( I could have never imagined this when Kou-kun sucked my blood for the first time... )
( But right now...I think I want Kou-kun just as badly... )
( I feel at ease...Just by having him by my side )
Kou: ...Nn...Hah...You’re kind of out of it today.
Yui: Eh!?
Kou: Make sure to fix your attention on me (2)...Nn.
Yui: ...!? Ow...Kou-kun! You bit me on purpose just now, didn’t you!?
Kou: You’re at fault for spacing out. That proves you had something on your mind, right?
Yui: Well...
Kou: See, I got it right! ...I’ll make it so you can’t think of anything or anyone but me.
...Nn...Haah...Nn...
Yui: Ah...
Kou: ...Nn...You’re so cute...Yui...
*TIMESKIP*
ー The scene shifts to the town
Kou: Today was so much fun.
Yui: Y-Yeah...
( Personally I found it rather embarrassing though... )
Kou: Huh? Your face is red, you know? Could it be...You’re recalling what happened earlier?
Yui: ...!
Kou: Bull’s eye, huh? You really are so cute.
Yui: O-Oh come on! Stop teasing me...!
Kou: Fufu...
Yui: ( Uu...How embarrassing... )
Kou: Hey, Yui.
Yui: Y-Yes?
Kou: There’s actually one more request I’d like to make while you’re embarrassed anyway.
Yui: A request...?
Kou: Let’s hold hands.
Come on, you don’t mind, do you?
Yui: Ah...
Kou: There’s nobody who would recognize me here.
Yui: Yeah...You’re right.
Kou: Hooray!
Yui: ( Kou-kun seems happy...When he’s happy, so am I. )
Kou: ...Hm?
Hey, Yui! Look at the display over there!
Yui: Eh...?
Something on the public TV screen (3) caught your eyーー Ah!
( Kou-kun’s on TV...!? )
Kou: I wonder what they’re saying about me?
Yui: U...Uhm...
( I did learn this country’s language a little but...Hm... )
...The Japanese idol...Mukami Kou...has gone missing? ...I think.
Kou: Heeh...They’d actually report it all the way over here as well.
Yui: ( Right... )
( To Kou-kun’s fans, it must seem as if he has suddenly vanished off the surface of the earth... )
Kou: ...
Yui: ...
( I’m sure the people who liked him must be extremely sad... )
( ...I wonder if we did the right thing...? )
Uhm...Kou-kun?
Kou: ーー I don’t have any regrets.
Yui: Eh...?
Kou: I bet you were thinking if we did the right thing while looking at the screen, weren’t you?
Yui: Uu...
Kou: You’re such a fool.
Yui: A-A fool...?
Kou: You said that you’d prioritize me over anything and follow me.
I feel the same way.
I left everything behind too. ...Except for you, Yui.
Yui: Kou-kun...
Kou: Well, there’s of course times where I wonder how Ruki-kun and the others are faring...
However, I will no longer hesitate. As long as you are with me, I won’t have any regrets either.
So...Don’t worry.
...Okay?
Yui: Kou-kun...
You’re right. I don’t regret my decision either.
Kou: Mmh! Let’s head home then?
Yui: ...Yeah!
( Together with Kou-kun, we can overcome any hurdle )
( I strongly felt so the second we leaped into the air together. )
*TIMESKIP*
Kou: Are we done shopping now?
Yui: I think we got everything we needed, so it should be fi...Ah!
Kou: What’s wrong? You forgot something?
Yui: I forgot to buy pasta...
Kou: Ehー! But we actually got our hands on some clams! But we can’t make vongole bianco without pasta!
Yui: Sorry! I’ll quickly go back!
You wait here, okay?
Kou: You’ll be fine by yourself?
Yui: Yeah. It’s right there.
Kou: Okayー Come back soon, okay?
Yui: Mmh. I’ll get going then.
ー Yui runs off
*TIMESKIP*
Yui: Phew. I successfully bought the pasta.
( Thank god I remembered before we got home... )
( Kou-kun’s waiting for me, right? I better hurry ba...Hm? )
Did this store always look like this...?
( Re-opening...It got a complete overhaul and became a jewelry store. )
( They’ve got a bunch of cute accesories out on display... )
( Ah... )
( This ring is so pretty...! )
( The blue is almost likeーー )
???: Hmm~ So this is the kind of stuff you like?
Yui: Eh!?
Kou-kun!
Kou: Geez~ I came looking for you because I was worried you were taking such a long time.
Yui: Ah, my bad!
Kou: It’s fine, really. Something caught your eye, right?
However, I didn’t expect to find you glued to the display window of a jewelry store~
I guess you’re finally reaching that age (4) as well, huh~?
Yui: T-That’s not it...It just happened to catch my attention...
Kou: This ring?
Yui: Yeah...Look at this blue gemstone inserted in it...
I thought it looked a lot like the color of the sky we saw together yesterday.
Kou: Yeah, you do have a point. It’s a clear, beautiful cerulean hue.
Yui: Right? It’s super pretty, so I was captivated by it...
Kou: Hm...
Ah! Your birthday is coming up soon, isn’t it?
Shall I buy it for you?
Yui: Eh?
I-It’s fine!
Kou: Eh~? Why?
Yui: We...should be careful with our spendings for now.
( We decided to choose where we’d settle after visiting various places. )
( So right now, we are living off the money Kou-kun had saved up through his job. )
Kou: Are you sure? I’ve got plenty of savings, you know?
Yui: That might be the case but...
I mean, that ring is really expensive, right?
Kou: Hmm, it is but I’d say this is a normal price for a ring?
Yui: Still, right now we shouldn’t.
Kou: So you basically don’t want a present from me?
Yui: T-That’s not true...! I’d be happy with anything you’d give me. But...
I’m still in no position to receive such a wonderful ring...
How to put it, I want to have grown to the point of feeling worthy before you gift it to me...
Kou: Hmm...?
Well, I figured you’d say something like that though.
Yui: I’m sorry for stopping by here.
Well, let’s head home then.
Kou: Yeah...
...
But, I still...
*Snap*
Yui: Kou-kun, what are you doing? You might get yelled at for taking pictures!
Kou: Ehー? Really? But it’s so pretty, you want to preserve a memory of it, no?
This makes for a proper blue sky as well after all!
*TIMESKIP*
ー The scene shifts to their home
Yui: Dinners ready!
Kou: Uwaah, it smells incredible! The pasta you make really is the very best, Yui!
Yui: Fufu, you still haven’t tried it, right? You might be even more impressed once you have a taste!
Kou: Oh!? Someone’s brimming with confidence, huh?
Yui: Today’s dish turned out extremely well.
So I’m sure you’ll like it as well.
Kou: Really? Let’s hurry up and eat then! Thanks for the meal!
Yui: Thanks for the meal.
Kou: Nn...Nom, nom...Yeah, it’s good!
Yui: Really!?
Kou: Yeah! No wonder you were so confident in it!
Yui: The clams were being highly recommended at the market today after all.
This has to be the dish I’m the most proud of so far...!
Kou: The taste might be the best amongst all the plates you’ve made as well!
Yui: Fufu, I’m glad.
Kou: Well, I’ll happily dig into any dish you make though.
Mm~ All done!
Yui: Eh? You’re already done?
Kou: Yeah, so...Seconds, please!
Yui: Fufu. I made sure to prepare lots for you, so one second please.
Kou: Hooray! I can probably go for two more plates!
Yui: Hang on tight, okay?
Kou: Roger!
*TIMESKIP*
Kou: Thanks for the meal~
Yui: Thanks for the meal.
Kou: Ah, I’ll handle the clean-up.
Yui: You sure?
Kou: You made me such delicious vongole bianco after all.
Let me do this much, okay?
Yui: Thanks, Kou-kun. I’ll be counting on you then, okay?
Kou: Yeah, leave it to me! ...Ah, you know, Yui.
Yui: Hm?
Kou: You really did like the ring we spotted today, no?
Yui: Hmm, I did think it was lovely. It was such a beautiful blue color after all.
However, I...
Kou: Okay, okay, stop! I know. You don’t want it (5), right?
Yui: Yeah...I don’t want anything.
I mean, I’m already so happy just to be living together with you like this.
Kou: I feel the same way.
I really am glad you’re here with me.
Say, let’s continue living happily together from here on out, okay...?
Yui: Yeah...!
ー The scene shifts to the bedroom
Kou: M-neko-chan said there’s nothing she wants but...
I still want to do something for her...
...Besides, a ring holds a special meaning...
Okay, I’ve made up my mind...!
*TIMESKIP*
ー The scene shifts to the living room
Yui: ( ...Hm, I just need to check the seasoning of the soup and then it’ll be ready, I suppose? )
Kou-kun! Dinner will be served soon!
...Huh? No response...
( Lately he’s been cooped up in our room quite often. )
( He never quite did that in the past, so I wonder what has gotten into him? )
ー The scene shifts to the bedroom
*Cling cling*
Kou: Geez, I never thought things would end up like this...
Ahー I can’t do it...!
*Cling*
Kou: It has improved a bit compared to my first attempts, but it’s still no good.
They said even a beginner should be able to pull it off, but this isn’t my cup of tea...
Ever since I was young, Ruki-kun has been telling me that I’m too careless of a worker...
*Cling*
Kou: But...I have to...bring this to a good end so...
Oh? It’s actually looking decent? Maybe I got the hang of it?
Okay then! Gotta keep going like this!
I told myself I wouldn’t give up, so better give it my all!
Besides, I’ll definitely finish it in time...!
*Cling*
*TIMESKIP*
Yui: ( ...Kou-kun’s late... )
( Lately he’s been leaving the house on a whim more often. )
( I wonder if he’s out again? )
( Whenever I ask, he just says he’s going on a walk or something like that... )
( I wonder if something happened...? )
ー Kou enters the room
Kou: I’m backー
Yui: Ah! Kou-kun...! Geez, I was worried because you just wouldn’t come home!
Kou: Ahー My bad? My stroll got a little prolonged, you could say?
Yui: Ah...Right.
( If something were up...he’d for sure talk to me about it...Right? )
I’ll make dinner now, so hang on, okay?
*TIMESKIP*
*Chop chop chop*
Kou: Heey, Yuiii~
Yui: What’s wrong?
Kou: I’m totally starved!
Food, quick!
Yui: Fufu, it’s almost ready so wait just a little longer?
Kou: ...Don’t wanna.
ー He sneaks up on her
*Rustle*
Yui: Wah...Wait, Kou-kun...!?
( He wrapped his arms around me from behind...!? )
It’s dangerous to do this while I’m cooking, you know?
Kou: But I’m home now...
Yet you won’t pay attention to me at all.
It’s boring.
Yui: Well...I’m making dinner right now, so it can’t be helped...
Kou: Then you don’t need to make food.
Yui: ( Says the person who was crying about being hungry just now... )
Kou: But, well...
Yui: ...Hm?
Kou: This kind of makes us seem like newlyweds, don’t you think?
Yui: Eh!?
ー Yui drops something
Kou: Ahaha! You’re way too shocked!
Yui: But...!
Kou: But it’s the truth, right?
Yui: Uu...
Kou: Then, let’s do something that fits the image of newlyweds!
Yui: Eeh? What will you do then...?
Kou: Hmー ...Taste-test the food?
Yui: ( Pretty sure he just wants to have a bite... )
Then...Can I ask you to taste the soup?
Kou: Leave it to me!
Yui: Uhm, I’m pretty sure the spoons are over there...
Kou: Wrong, right?
Yui: Eh? What am I getting wrong?
Kou: You’ll feed me, won’t you?
Yui: Eeh!? Really!?
Kou: We have to act like newlyweds, so that should be a given!
Come on, you hold the spoon.
Yui: ...We’re actually doing this?
Kou: Of course! Come on, aaaahn~
Yui: ( ...This is embarrassing...But... )
S-Say ‘aaahn’...
Kou: ...Nn...Mmh~ It’s good!
Yui: Really!? I’m glad!
Kou: Then it’s my turn next, right? Okay, open wide!
Yui: Eh? ...I’m fine...
Kou: Why are you being so modest? Come on, say ‘aaahn’!
Yui: A-Aahn...
Kou: Fufu~ Well done.
...How does it taste?
Yui: I-It’s good...I guess...?
( To be honest, the flavor was the last thing on my mind... )
Kou: Then are you done cooking now?
Yui: Yeah. Seasoning the soup was the last task on the list.
Kou: Okay! Let’s hurry up and eat!
Yui: Good idea. I’m hungry too.
ー They move to the table
Kou: I’m digging in!
Yui: Thanks for the meal.
Kou: Nom...Nn...You knowーー
...Whoops, I shouldn’t talk with food in my mouth, huh?
...Nn...You know, Yui!
Yui: What’s wrong? Was it not very good, perhaps...?
Kou: Ah, that’s not it...But aren’t you forgetting something?
Yui: Forgetting something?
( What could that be...? Did something happen? )
Kou: Hahー By the looks of it, you’ve completely forgotten.
Geez! Get a grip on yourself! Tomorrow’s your birthday, remember!?
Yui: Ah...Right.
Kou: We’ll go out to buy whatever you want to eat tomorrow, so don’t forget!
Yui: No way...It’s fine, really.
Kou: Don’t say that! We have to properly celebrate your birthday.
I’ll buy your favorite food and even prepare a cake!
Understood?
Yui: Y-Yeah...
Kou: ...You don’t seem very happy though? ...You don’t like me celebrating your birthday or something...?
Yui: Oh no! That’s not true! It’s just...I didn’t think you’d say that so, I...
Kou: Stop! I’ll listen to the rest tomorrow, so don’t say it just yet!
Yui: R-Right...
( My birthday...I never thought Kou-kun would celebrate for me. )
( I’m looking forward to tomorrow...! )
Kou: That being said, we gotta head out early in the morning tomorrow to do the shopping.
So you better hit the hay soon?
Yui: Eh?
Kou: I’ll clean up too, okay?
Come on, you should hurry and get ready for bed!
Off you go!
*Rustle*
Yui: Wah! Hold on, Kou-kun!?
( I wonder what has gotten into him...!? )
Kou: Goodnight!
Yui: Y-Yeah...Goodnight?
ー He pushes her out of the room
Kou: Phew...I guess the coast is clear now...?
*Flip*
Kou: ...
...Tomorrow...huh?
*TIMESKIP*
ー The scene shifts to town
Yui: ( Kou-kun acted a little off yesterday... )
( But today he seems to be his usual self...I guess? )
Kou: Yui, give me your bags.
Yui: Eh?
Kou: It’s heavy because you bought a lot, right? I’ll carry them.
Yui: Ah...Thank you.
( Kou-kun’s so nice... )
Kou: Are you sure you bought everything you want to eat?
Yui: Yeah, this is plenty! I was able to buy it all so...thank you.
Kou: Really? There’s really no need to hold back though.
Yui: ( Kou-kun says that but...I bought quite a lot already, I think...? )
( I wonder if we’ll be able to finish everything... )
( I have to make sure we can preserve whatever leftovers we may have. )
( I suppose I could turn the fruits into a jam...? )
Hey, Kou-kun...
Wait...Huh...? Kou-kun...?
( He’s gone...Don’t tell me ,did we get separated because I spaced out...? )
( Oh no... )
For now, I’ll look around these parts...!
ー Yui starts running around
Yui: Haah...
( What now...? He’s not here either... )
Kou: Ah! M-neko-chan!
Yui: ...Kou-kun!!
Kou: Thank god! I was wondering where you had run off to!
Yui: I’m sorry. Seems like I blanked out for a bit.
Kou: I’m sorry too!
Yui: No way, you don’t have to apologize.
It’s because I got lost in thought...I’m to blame, I truly am sorry!
Kou: ...Fufu~ We’re so weird! We’re both apologizing, huh?
Yui: But, I...I was shocked when you were suddenly gone...
Kou: I started panicking when I realized you were gone too, you know?
Either way, I’m glad I found you. Let’s head home holding hands so we don’t get separated again.
Come on, give me your hand.
Yui: Yeah...!
*TIMESKIP*
ー The scene shifts to the living room
*Cling*
Kou: Ta-dah! It’s time for the long-awaited cake!
Here you go. This is your slice.
Yui: Wah, thank you!
Kou: You really are a maiden at heart to choose strawberry shortcake~
Yui: ...What do you mean?
Kou: ...That it’s cute.
Yui: ...!
Kou: Geez~ You always start blushing right away...
You really are like a strawberry, you know? I’d love to eat you...is what I would say, but!
Right now, the real strawberries get priority.
I’ll give you mine!
Yui: Eh? ...But...Then you won’t have any.
Kou: I’m fine. You’re the star of today after all!
Yui: ...Fufu, thank you!
Kou: Fufu~ Ahー I guess I might as well sit next to you instead of across then.
*Rustle*
Kou: Pardon the intrusion~!
*Thud*
Yui: Well then...It’d be a shame to let the cake go to waste so let’s give it a taste?
*Cling*
Kou: Ah! Wait!
Yui: W-What’s wrong? You’re suddenly shouting...
Kou: You know, we have to do that! That!
It’s a birthday cake, so we should put a candle on top and have you blow it out!
Yui: Ah...I guess so?
Kou: Of course! That’s a given!
I’ll give it to you after I’ve put on the candle so hold on tight, okay?
*Rustle*
Kou: Hmー Here, all ready!
Yui: Thanks!
( I’m pretty sure I haven’t blown out a candle since I was a child... )
Kou: Well then...Will you blow it out soon?
Yui: Yeah! Okay...Here I go?
Pheew...
ー The lights go out
Yui: ( Wah! It’s pitch black! )
*Rustle*
Yui: ( Eh...? He grabbed my arm... )
Kou: Happy birthday, Yui.
Yui: Kyah...!?
Kou: Fufu! Mission complete!
ー The lights go back on
Yui: Geez...Everything went black all of a sudden, it spooked me.
Kou: I’m sorry, I wanted to surprise you.
Yui: ( Speaking of which, he said ‘mission complete’, but what does that mean...? )
Eh...?
( A ring...!? )
Kou-kun...This is...
Kou: Yeah. It’s my present to you.
Yui: ( It looks like the one we saw at the jewelry store the other day... )
( But the shape seems a little different... )
Kou: Hmm...I thought I did a pretty good job though.
Well, the fact that it’s a little oddly shaped is its charm, a selling point!
Yui: This, did you perhaps...?
Kou: ...Yeah, I made it myself. I’m no good at handiwork, so I couldn’t do a very good job though.
Yui: You made this ring for me...!?
Kou: Yeah, I sure did!
I actually wanted to give you something and went to go buy the one they were selling at the store.
However, it got sold right before me.
Then when I told the people at the store that I wanted the ring no matter what, they suggested I would make it myself.
That’s how I got them to teach me how to make a ring this whole time up till today.
Yui: Up until today...The whole time...
( Then all those times he was gone lately. )
( Or when he suddenly disappeared earlier as well... )
Kou: Also, look at this!
*Rustle*
Kou: This was my first attempt, but it barely even looks like a ring, huh?
...Look, it’s just an iron scrap, don’t you think?
I really gave it my everything.
Yui: Yeah...I can tell, don’t worry.
Kou: Also, I realized.
Yui: What did you realize?
Kou: That you probably wouldn’t have been happy, even if I got to gift you the ring which was up for sale.
Up until now, I always thought that it was natural to return the favor when a person gives you something.
...However, now I no longer feel that way.
Yui: ...
Kou: I don’t want anything in return.
Because I already know that something much better exists beyond that.
Yui: Kou-kun...
Kou: So, even if the appearance is a little shabby, this is the proof of my love for you!
Yui: Yeah...Kou-kun...I...
( Oh no...The tears are... )
Kou: ...Fufu, you’re so happy it’s making you cry?
Yui: Yeah...I’m overjoyed...! After all...You made this for me...!
Kou: Ah...
...Mmh. Thank you.
Yui: ( Kou-kun said the shape is a little strange but. )
( It’s such a lovely ring... )
( And above all, I’m happy knowing that Kou-kun made it himself. )
( I can tell just how much effort he put in... )
I’m happy...Kou-kun, thank you. Thank you so, so much...!
Kou: Ahー Come on, dry your tears?
Yui: But...Uu...
( I can’t...stop these tears... )
Kou: Well, I’m happy knowing you like it this much too though...
Oh, geez! Lift your face?
...Nn...
*Smooch*
Yui: ...!
Kou: ...Done crying?
Yui: ...Yes.
Kou: Your crying face is cute too though. ...Nn...
*Smooch*
Kou: ...Hey, scoot closer...
...Nn...Nn...
...Even your tears are sweet, huh? ...Nn...
Yui: ...Kou-kun...
Kou: ...Nn...Haah...
Yui...I love you...
...Thank you for being born into this world...Nn...
Yui: ( I love you too, Kou-kun... )
( Thank you, Kou-kun... )
*TIMESKIP*
ー The scene shifts to the outside
*Snap*
Kou: ...Yeah, we’re having lovely weather today as well.
Oi, Yui! This way!
Yui: Wait, Kou-kun!
You walk way too fast...
Kou: Sorry, sorry~ The sky just looked so pretty.
I couldn’t sit still.
Yui: I do understand how you feel...The sky is so clear after all.
But even so, leaving me behind is just mean!
Kou: Like I said, I’m sorry! ...So forgive me?
*Rustle rustle*
Yui: ( Wah...Kou-kun embraced me... )
Kou: Hm...In the light, you can really see the flaws.
Yui: ...Hm?
Kou: I’m talking about your ring. It didn’t quite catch my eye yesterday though.
But the shape is a little crooked, don’t you think?
Yui: It’s not.
Besides, I will never take this ring off again.
After all...This ring is the proof of your feelings.
I could search far and wide, I wouldn’t find a single ring in this whole world quite as lovely.
Kou: ...Really?
Yui: Yeah! For sure!
Kou: I see...
*Rustle*
Kou: Hm...
Yui: Kou-kun?
Kou: ...Right. Won’t you let me slip that ring on your finger one more time?
Yui: The ring?
Kou: Yeah.
Yui: Yesterday, I gave it to you in the dark after all.
*Rustle*
Kou: And there just so happens to be such a beautiful sky.
I want to put this ring on you.
...Underneath the blue skies I admired for years.
Yui: Kou-kun...
Kou: ...Can I?
Yui: Yeah.
Kou: ...Ever since I was born, I have seen a lot of things.
I went through a lot of pain, and experienced many hardships.
Yui: Yeah...
Kou: But, I met Ruki-kun and the others, as well as that man...
I learnt about a blue sky which isn’t confined by a circle or a square.
And...I found you.
Yui: Mmh...
Kou: I thought I had nothing left, but right now, I have you.
That is all I need. I don’t want anything else.
I swear on this misformed ring, underneath the sky...
I love you...Yui.
From here on out, for eternity...
...How about you?
Yui: ...Me too...I love you...!
Kou: Yeah...Thank you.
Let’s be together forever.
I love you, Yui...
*Smooch*
ーー THE END ーー
Translation notes
(1) Literally she says ‘to be emotionally moved by various things’ but that sounded rather stiff in English, so I translated it a little differently.
(2) Literally he asks her to ‘point her consciousness/awareness towards him’.
(3) I actually have no idea what these are called in English but they’re the large TV screens which may be attached to buildings or put out in public to display important events, etc. In Japan, these are super common in big cities but here in Belgium - for example - you rarely ever see them. ^^;;
(4) Kou uses the term 色づく or ‘iro-duku’ which is often used to refer to the ripening of fruits or the reddening of leaves during fall time. I assume in this case, he wants to imply that she is becoming more mature.
(5) The verb 要る or ‘iru’ literally means ‘to need’, but it is often used to reject something as well, in which case ‘want’ seems more fitting in English.

The Ties That Bind (And How to Follow Them) 3/?

Monday at the archives went by uneventfully, though Pate did have some difficulty staying awake. She actually ended up going out to her car for her lunch hour and took a nap, the result being that she didn’t eat anything.
Pate was never quite sure these days what she might walk into when she opened her apartment door, but it was unusually quiet when she arrived home. “Beej?” she called out. He’d taken off once or twice before, taking care of she didn’t know what business she didn’t know where, but he’d usually be back before bedtime. Feeling a little more energized thanks to her nap but famished from her skipped meal, Pate changed into loungewear, scrubbed off her makeup, and started preparations for dinner. It didn’t take long, and she would ordinarily wait for Beetlejuice to return from his roaming but she was starved and quickly scarfed down her portion, keeping Beej’s helping warm with a foil tent over the plate.
Unsure what to do with herself with the specter gone, Pate curled up on the couch and put on an animal documentary to wait for him.
⁂
He worked it down to a system.
Find a crack, enlarge it enough to send a tentacle or two to start searching for the next one while he forced the rest of himself through. A few times he was slowed when the scouting tendrils took longer to find the next exit point, and once he was stymied because a crack was above the ‘window’. He had no idea if anyone on the other side of that mirror saw him, or what they thought as he shimmied up the inside of the glass like a striped spider right out of a nightmare.
As Beetlejuice expected, there was no rhyme or reason to any of this, and no way to determine where he was. He could have been halfway around the world or in the apartment next door to Pate’s. Nothing he saw when he looked out--and he looked out of every window--was familiar. Undeterred because he had nothing but time, he kept at it.
Just because he had time, though, didn’t mean he didn’t ache. He’d never worked his tentacles so long that they were sore, and his fingers felt more numb than not. He had no fingernails left and he could feel the scrapes on his face, left after he’d pushed through a hole that wasn’t quite large enough for him to get through.
Hours had to have passed. If he got to Pate’s mirror before she came home, Beej promised himself a rest. Till then, he pressed on.
It seemed a Sisyphean task, this endless clawing into the white space behind mirrors. Evilly, his brain started asking questions like, “how many mirrors were there in the world? What if he was going in a circle? What if Lillian had forced the illusion that he was making progress, when he was still just trapped in her one special mirror?” If he gave into those thoughts or despair, he’d be lost for good. Then, all at once, as he pressed his forehead to the inside of yet another pane of glass to look out, a piece of paper on the outside caught his eye. He’d been through plenty of mirrors that had photos stuck to them, but very few in a bathroom--with the same black and white striped shower curtain as in Pate’s! The photo had curled from the humidity. Around it was a smear of lipstick in the shape of a lopsided heart. She’d been so angry he’d used her favorite shade to add the decoration--with his finger, no less!--but she’d never wiped it away.
He couldn’t see the front of it, of course, but knew the photo: a spontaneous Polaroid shot on her balcony one evening during the golden hour, an old-school selfie taken just because. They’d both been laughing because it had taken time to line it up correctly and not just get hair or half of someone’s face. They’d wasted so much film trying to get a good one. The final shot was the two of them slightly turned towards each other, Pate’s forehead against his temple, her eyes closed and a wide grin on her face. His mouth was slightly open because he’d been caught mid-laugh, but he was smiling too. Both their arms were outstretched because they figured both of them holding the camera might work better. The tips of his hair were pink.
He was home.
Beetlejuice would have cried in relief if he wasn’t so tired. Now all he had to do was wait till Pate came into the bathroom, probably inadvertently scare the crap out of her, and get her to let him out.
⁂
She must have nodded off there on the couch because the next thing Pate knew she was startling awake, heart thumping in her throat. She’d been on the colorful road again in the foggy wood, running from she didn’t know what and towards she didn’t know where.
Pate rubbed at her eyes with the heels of her hands and sighed, swinging her legs to the floor. What she needed was a splash of cold water in her face. Rising to her feet, Pate stretched and squinted at the time on the cable box, noting that Beetlejuice still appeared to be absent. She frowned, slightly unsettled that he had yet to return home.
She padded to the bedroom and on to the bathroom, flipping on the lights. In the sudden brightness she was instantly aware of a figure in the medicine cabinet mirror that was not her own. The initial shock made her jump, but the oh-too-familiar green hair and striped suit made her huff a relenting half smile.
“Okay, Beej, that was a good one. You totally got me,” she said, turning to face him behind her only to find that the room was empty except for her. Brow furrowed, Pate took another moment to look around in case he was hiding and hoping for another shock but there was no sign of him. Turning back to the mirror, where his disembodied reflection still stood with a strange expression on his face, she flashed him a questioning look.
“What’s goin on, Bug?”
Looking more closely at him, Pate noticed that his already mussed hair looked even more awry than normal, and there were marks on his face. Growing concerned, Pate took a step closer, pressed against the counter to lean closer to the cabinet and the mirror with the growing suspicion that something was wrong.
⁂
Time still had no meaning here. He tried the same things on Pate’s mirror that he had in Lillian’s, pounding on the glass with fists and tentacles, to the same zero effect. He even did his best to simply wrench the glass from the wall, but unlike the odd cracks he’d found that was seamless, like it was one solid piece of material. Eventually he gave up and just waited. It was like being in a tomb. He’d had plenty of practice with that, although this was unending light and he could see a portion of the bathroom. That was almost worse torture than just laying in the dark. Pate had to enter here sometime, however. When she did, looking a little like she’d just woken up, it actually startled him. The light was blinding for a moment and he jumped. Pate did too, when she saw him there, and then tiredly derided him for the scare.
He shook his head and said, “No--Pate, baby, you gotta let me out!”
She didn’t see it. She had turned to look behind her as if expecting him to be there.
When she turned back around to face him, she looked confused. She asked him what was going on.
“Pate! Pate!” he shouted, the volume in his voice increasing. “I’m stuck here! I can’t get out, you’ve gotta let me out! I went to see Lillian and she trapped me in her mirror, and then I kept moving from mirror to mirror until I found yours--how long have I been gone? Let me out!” Beej watched her gaze shift from his eyes to his mouth, and realized with growing panic that one, she couldn’t hear him, and two, he just word vomited so much so quickly there was no way she was able to lip-read everything that spilled out of his mouth. He put one hand flat on the glass towards her and licked his lips to try again. Enunciating as best he could, voice still just one notch below yelling, Beetlejuice said, “Pate. I’m stuck. Stuck! Help me get out, baby!” He put his forehead on the glass. The fingers on his outstretched hand, the one pressed palm side to the interior of the glass, trembled as well. The specter lifted his eyes back to her. “Please,” he pleaded.
⁂
Ordinarily after pulling a scare on her, Beetlejuice would be preening like the cat that caught the canary, punctuated with nuzzles and kisses to her forehead and cheeks and statements that he simply couldn’t help himself, she looked so cute when he caught her off guard.
This time, though, he looked positively frantic. His eyes were wide and desperate, his hand pressed flush against the inside of the glass. Pate’s eyes narrowed as his lips moved but she couldn't hear him. She did her best to discern what he was saying by reading his lips, but even then she could only make out a few words.
She thought she caught him say the words “stuck” and “help”. She swallowed, feeling an apprehensive flutter in her stomach. Something was terribly wrong. He was scared, and anything that could scare Beetlejuice was something to be deeply concerned about.
Questions began forming in her mind; how had he gotten himself stuck in her mirror? How could she get him out? The first thought that occurred to her was breaking the mirror, but somehow that didn’t seem like a good plan. What if it hurt him or something?
‘Come on, think!’ she told herself, reaching up to press her hand over the spot where his was in the glass.
Nothing Lillian had taught her seemed to be of any use, it was all about how to keep spirits and specters away, not letting them loose. At that thought she wondered darkly if Lillian might have something to do with this.
“Beej,” she said slowly, in case he couldn’t hear her, too. “Did Lillian do this? Because if she did, I’ll go talk to her right now.”
If the older woman somehow sealed her demon lover away, surely she had the ability to release him, Pate reasoned. And if it meant finally coming clean about having Beetlejuice around, if Lillian refused to teach her anymore because of it, then so be it. She just had to get him out of there.
⁂
Pate putting her hand against his, unable to touch, felt like they were miles apart instead of separated by a layer of glass. He swallowed and ran his free hand through his hair, hoping it wasn’t betraying his rising panic with some odd color. She must have picked up something from his spill of words, because she hit on the person who had done this: her mentor. Beej nodded at her query, but Pate’s announcement that she was going to talk to the older woman right now made him pound a fist on his side of the glass in anger and fear. “Yes it was Lillian! But baby don’t--don’t leave me here!” he shouted. “Pate--!” Frustrated and increasingly worried she was going to follow through with her idea to go to Lillian’s right now, walking away from him after he’d clawed his way and only by chance ended up where he wanted to be, Beetlejuice continued to pound on the mirror. A terrifying thought skipped through his head: What if she went back to Lillian’s and he needed to be in Lillian’s mirror to be let out?!
He’d have to get back to the old woman’s apartment. Frantically he glanced in the direction he’d entered this space and to his ultimate fear, it was once again plain unending white. There was no broken seam, no evidence he’d ever been anywhere but where he was right now. That threw him into a state of even more panic, and without warning Pate, he stepped away from the window.
A tentacle immediately nosed the spot he thought he’d come in, but found nothing. His fingers found nothing. The seam he’d torn apart was nonexistent. He’d have to find another to try and leave this mirror, and who knew where that would take him. Where would he be? Could he find his way back to Lillian’s? A whine that he now knew Pate couldn’t hear escaped his lips. Beej pushed himself back to his feet and went back to the window. “Please don’t leave me,” he whispered.

Beautiful Revelations
Pairing: Gruvia (I know its been a hot ass min)
Fandom: Fairy Tail
tags: @shellielyzabeth @be-dazzled @nostalgicxslumber @unvalley @tigerfire54
Note: It has happened. I have written 200 fanfics and idk if I should be proud or slightly scared. (feel free to skip this omg why is it so long)
I want to say thank you to everyone who has read, liked, reblogged or interacted with me in any way. I have always had a feeling that no matter what I write, I wouldn’t matter. But every comment and sweet note left made me realize that even if its just a smile or enough to make someone hit the like button, I made a small difference or added something to the fandom. Most of my fics are quick drabbles full of spelling mistakes, random thoughts and love for the characters. I know I don’t write very long stories or finish my wips (why are we surprised) but even though Im not someone people look to as a big author, each of you have made me feel special. There have been many times, this year especially that I had decided to give up writing. “Im not good enough and no one will even notice” Thats what I told myself if I decided to just back away. But every so often I would look and see that someone new or old had read my work. Every time someone reads something I wrote, I go back and read it too. I look at all the tags and see every comment and I stop and smile and remember how much joy it brought me when I first posted.
When I first started writing, I thought that I wouldn’t have a place. Yet in a very short span of time, I was welcomed with open arms and people started to tune in regularly for my fics. I had been given many nicknames such as Gruvia goddess, angst queen, satan (yes I know the fic0 and well even Star.
During my darkest moments, my mind lingered to my writing and to my internet friends. without hesitation I could message someone and feel better and be given the reassure I need. I can't even begin to say how much it means to me that people actually enjoy my writing and even me as a person.
I thank each of you for giving me a joy that was considered a luxury at one point and allowing me to write whatever I wanted and you took it with love and made me happier than I have been in years. To all the people who made art or wrote me something, it means so much to me.
Im not saying that this fic is my greatest but I think it has a special place because It shows the growth over time. 200 fics is a lot and whether or not they were all good, it doesn't matter because I did that and I can say that im proud. Im sorry for all that sappy shit but I wouldn't be where I am without you all.
-Star <3
ps: im not dying or stop writing fics im just happy lol

“There is never a time or place for true love. It happens accidentally, in a heartbeat, in a single flashing, throbbing moment.”
― Sarah Dessen, The Truth About Forever
---
It was the nights like these that she hated most. The cold would creep through the blankets and make her shiver as her eyelids hung heavy. She could be ready to rest, let the sweet dreams guide her but instead those dark intrusive thoughts toyed with her like a fly on a freshly woven web. They would sprout out of nowhere, tangled with thorns and hold her mind hostage as it injected its sickly venomized thoughts for the night.
She always wondered how she got this far. She was one of the highest members of Phantom Lord, her abilities had rarely been matched. If she desperately craved, she could walk down the hallways and strike fear into the other members, no one could touch her. Hierarchies became a custom here. Once you made it to the top after clawing your way with blood, sweat and probably more blood, you were a god. Yet she walked in and in the next few minutes she was at the table with the master, already receiving a promise that she was special, a delicate and useful ally for the guild.
Special. What a swollen lie that turned out to be.
Maybe that's why she never bothered to search for a light, something to cure the rain. For every life she had bruised or ended, she wanted to feel the pain that followed. She needed to know the consequence of her actions, to be held accountable for ruining another family or taking something from the innocent. Instead she was celebrated.
The days turned to months and she found herself years later not knowing what anything meant anymore. Life used to be black and white. She would walk the side of the kind and good and now she was treading through a swarm of a morally gray compound.
These restless nights, she loathed them but then again, suffering was something that came naturally to her. The only person to ever knock her down was herself.
She climbed out of bed, fuzzy slippers over her feet as she walked to the bathroom. Her headache had worsened and she stared into the mirror. She had looked at herself a thousand times but… have her eyes always been that blue? No, she was tired and her vision was fuzzy, she was fine. Cold water came to her hands as she turned on the facet and splashed her face. Everything was the same as it always was. Expect for today.
Her order was simple. Defeat whoever stood in her way and make sure the Phantom Lord got Lucy Heratfilia. Why did they want some mage? She didn’t know but she was never one to second guess her orders. To go against what she was told was a waste of time, she would have been dead by the end of the day if she did. She had once believed that they accepted her with open arms, that Phantom Lord truly cared about her well being. It was a lie. A bitter sweet lie she allowed to remain in her head.
Hundreds of opponents had come before her. She was accustomed to the way of a battle and had harnessed her skill at a young age. The pure power of the rain pushed her further. She had an unlimited amount of power around her, unlike others, they would run out of fuel. She began to crave that god-like power. Allow the storm to rage on, all she had was herself and the droplets that followed. She understood she was an outcast. Love was never an option, not for someone who brought gloom everywhere.
But this afternoon, fate was a funny thing. She walked onto that rooftop, winning was the only thing on her mind, but he was there. A man who didn’t back down, a man who saw her as an equal.
Her heart began to race. It was forgien and she wasn’t sure if she liked it. She had felt attraction before but this, this was different. Something as small as a single glance had already spun her mind into a muddled mess. It would have been better if she turned around, if he didn’t engage in the fight. Then maybe she wouldn’t be thinking of him like this.
Love at first sight. That wasn’t real. No one could possibly have that happen. What could drive someone's emotion so wild that they become attached to a person in such a short time? And yet it happened. He stood there waiting for the next move and she could only gaze at him with rose colored glasses.
An enemy. A traitor. That's what she would be if she dared to let him escape. She couldn’t hestatite, she never did and now she was frozen in her spot as ice magic danced around her. Peoples magic and abilities never intrigued her, but this, this was beyond anything she had seen.
The light reflecting off of the ice as her droplets froze before her eyes was breathtaking and she hardly noticed that she was losing the battle. She never thought rain could look, dare she say, beautiful? But in this state of its frozen glory, it was all she could think about. She envied those who never had to stay in the rain, a jealousy she didn’t want to admit had festered over the years and she gave up trying to despise the element. But before her was something much more than the state she was accustomed to. Ice. The solid purity of her own and she had wondered what it would be like to hold it in her hands.
She had water locked him, pulled out all of the stops and even with that, he stood again and again. He had screamed that the water was boiling, burning his skin but never before had the water gone above warm. It was usually ice cold on the tipping point of freezing but she could feel the warmth surrounding her.
It shocked her just the same. She had heard people talk about feeling the sun kiss their skin, the warmth spreading as they walked, this was the closest she had felt to that. This warm rush of water was beyond what she had known and yet even as it tinged her hands it felt good, it felt freeing, it felt right.
It burned in a way she had craved for so long. Something other than the fridgeness she had grown used too.
She stared at her reflection in her mirror, tears brimming her eyes. How could one person she just met bring her something she had never felt before? She shut the light out in the bathroom and walked back to her bed, passing her window, she stopped and turned.
Above in the sky was the moon. A soft white glow surrounded the orb that she had never seen before. It was breathtaking. A cosmic power the normal people of the world didn’t dare to worship now became a luxury. The sky was clear and she could see the stars, she could sense them all. How could she have lived her entire life never once seeing the moon and the sun? She had been cursed to live in the rain forever.
But he-he made it stop.
When he grabbed her arm, it was like time had stopped. As if everything she had ever known was washed away and all she could see was a bright light encasing him. She was content knowing her death was coming, there was hardly a reason for her to live. Perhaps she wasn't even living, just surviving day after gloomy day.
He pulled her to safety, her back against the roof as she panted heavily. Those clouds above her moved like a curtain for a show, parting just so that she could see the enchanting mystery she had always craved.
She had never known a blue sky till then. The brightness was almost unbearable as she stared into a sky she had never known. So many emotions flooded her head but it was clear as those ice crystals that her heart was beating for him. She was his enemy, they made that clear from the start but he hadn’t hesitated to save her. He showed a mercy she had never come across.
Another tear fell as she sat on her bed.
“He saved Juvia.” She whispered to herself. A horrific thought came to her. Would she have saved him? She didn’t want to know the outcome because deep down she believed she was good. Beneath the surface of unremosle power, there was that scared little girl who never had anyone to care for her.
The amount of days she sat in that orphanage alone sewing her dolls and praying that the rain stopped one way or another, it was as if she couldn’t remember it. He had done the impossible. He showed her the sky she hadn’t seen. He had shown her kindness.
A thought came to mind as she stood and packed her things. No more would she be known as “the rain woman”. No more would gloom be her only trait. She was determined to find something much more appealing than those bowing by fear. She wanted love. She wanted that warmth of the water constantly and the feeling of the sun on her skin. She understood it now. There was a power strong than her, stronger than any wizard that surrounded the other guild.
She had vowed to be done with love. Promised herself that no man could hurt her again. She was trembling at the thought of being vulnerable once more. The only time she felt warmth was the scorching burn of a fiery rejection and words that burned like lava. It was too much for someone to handle. So she pushed it down, locked the key and threw it as far as she could. The temptation though. The idea of letting her guard down for someone, someone she barely knew? How she fantasized of that moment. She had once believed that someone of her past had done that, but they were all the same. Ashamed of the rain, the rain she caused, the pain she brought.
And after their fight when she collected herself and tried to run back towards her guild, he stopped her.
“For what it's worth I think you’re an incredible wizard. You may not want to believe that your guild is dark and bad but, Fairy Tail is always open.” He had said it with such sincerity that she wasn’t sure if it were true.
“Juvia thinks your magic is just as powerful.” She had said before he gave her a smile and turned away to go back to his other guild mates.
And here she stood, a suitcases packed in the night and a note left on the desk. This guild didn’t deserve any words. Not when they feasted on her ability. Harvested those negative emotions and almost made her fall into the deep end.
She knew what they would say. They would call her a coward. A traitor and a worthless wizard, at first it was enough to stop her. Make her stay and perhaps bring back the clouds. However what he said stuck in her mind.
“I would rather die fighting than let your guild have Lucy! She is one of us and we don’t leave anyone behind.”
Without hesitation he made it clear that every member of the guild was valued no matter how long they had been there, they were a family. If something like that would have happened, if she were threatened, her guild would let her die without a second thought.
Never again would she allow someone to have a hold over her. She spent too many years sheltered by pain and deviation to go on like that.
She grabbed her bag and closed her door.
--
Juvia stood in front of the door. The morning would be better to do this but it was beyond dark outside and she didn’t want her intrusive thoughts pulling her back to her old guild. Softly she knocked, maybe hoping that he wouldn’t hear it and force her back to the isolation of fear.
The open clicked open and her eyes widened slightly as a sleepy Gray leaned against the door frame, shirtless and rubbing his eyes.
“Juvia?” He blinked and watched as her cheek puffed out in red. He looked down to see that he was only in his underwear and let out a yelp as he grabbed a blanket off the chair. “What are you doing here?”
“Um Juvia thought.” She paused and looked towards the ground. “Actually Juvia apologies for disturbing you.” Her back was to him and she began to walk away.
“Wait!” His hand caught hers and he pulled slightly. A jolt of warmth spread through her, burning her like a thousand suns as well as the chill of ice from his own temperature. She looked back at him, eyes wide and lips parted. “Juvia, please just tell me.”
“Such kindness.” She whispered to herself. Her heart rate sped up just like it did earlier and she swallowed a breath. “Juvia was wondering…why did you save her?”
His hand dropped her as if he were shocked that she would dare question his action.
“I wasn’t going to let you die. Enemies or not, I don’t think you deserved that fate. I don’t believe that you are this evil person your guild made you out to be. To be honest when you fell, you look like you didn’t care what happened and I guess I saw myself in you.”
“You saved Juvia because you know what it's like?”
“To feel lost and hopeless I guess.” He scratched the back of his neck nervously. “Sometimes it's hard thinking you deserve to live, that it would be better to harbor all the pain of your past. I don’t know everything about you but that look in your eyes. I couldn’t let you go knowing that there was a brighter future ahead.”
A tear dripped from her eye. Her smile was soft as hugged her arms to her body. “You knew Juvia would join the guild.”
“Well I wouldn’t say I knew, but I was hoping that you would. If you still want to, that is.”
“Juvia would be honored.” She bowed respectfully towards him.
Gray smiled and bowed back. His eyes faced the sky looking towards the moon. “Have you ever seen it?”
“Tonight would be the first. Juvia thinks the stars are remarkable.”
“Lucy knows alot about them, I think you two would be good friends.”
Juvia shook her head as regret twisted in her stomach. “Juvia accepts your kindness and compassion but she doesn’t know if the rest will. Juvia was her rival, she understands if everyone doesn’t see her as a friend.” She frowned slightly.
A laugh came from the ice mage's mouth. “That's the thing about Fairy Tail, no matter where you come from or what your past may have held, there's always going to be a friend waiting.”
Juvia nodded. “Thank you Gray. Juvia will talk to your guild master tomorrow.”
“Like I said before. You’re an incredible wizard, you’ll be just fine.” He winked.
“Have a nice night.”
“You too.”
She watched as he entered his house before turning around and walking towards her hotel. Her shoulders felt lighter and she held her head high for the first time. This was her step in the right direction, this was where her new life began.
Time had slowed and allowed her to pause. A beautiful revelation she never knew could exist came to mind as she just realized that she was in love.
---
She looked down at her leg in the mirror. The voices behind her had faded to the background as she became entranced with the mark of Fairy Tail.
“The blue suits you.” She turned to see Gray standing there with a smile as he was focused on her guild mark.
To say that she was grateful was an understatement. Her mask she wore like a crown had shattered. It unravels in his hands as the months went on and all that was left was the person she wanted to be. She could finally let go of her ghosts, her darkness and begin to forgive herself.
---
“What do you think?” He asked her as the white sky fell with snow.
Gray had told her of a special spot he used to go to when the first snow came. Past the forest was a clearing of grassy hills that would soon become a winter wonderland. Laid out on one of the hills was a blanket and a few lanterns.
She held her hand out and felt the tiny snowflakes collect on her hand. He sat behind her, one arm snaked around her waist while the other hand rose above hers and created a small flurry of snowflakes.
“Breathtaking.” She gushed. This was the first time she had seen snow fall. Her eyes followed the ice magic as it formed a heart and blew into the sky joining the other flurries. She turned so she could meet his eyes and his normal content face was replaced with a smile.
He leaned forward until their noses touched briefly. “Have I ever told you how beautiful you are?” He said and she only had a moment to process his words as his lips landed on hers and her eyes fluttered close.
Her hand went to his cheek as she leaned towards him, her energy matching his and all she could hear was the thumping of her heart. She would be embarrassed to say that she might have dreamt of this moment a little too much but it didn’t matter now. All she knew was that her beloved felt the same.
---
For once she was happy to hear a cry. That little whimper bubbling from the baby's mouth, her baby, she was in disbelief. Perfection was a rarity. No one was perfect, but the being with a tuft of dark blue hair and grey eyes would beg to differ. A child was never in her future. The thought came up randomly but the idea of raising a family wasn’t even a question.
During her missions in her old guild, she would walk past a family. She would see happy faces on everyone and would only be filled with envy and hatred. Disgusting was what it was. How could you love someone else when there was no love for you?
But times change. She would see others holding their child's hand and feel a warmth in her heart at how the children beamed up at their parents. She could sense the love all around them and would smile herself, hoping that it might become a reality for herself.
She would wake in the middle of the night, not from her demons but for her new reason to live. He would babble and tug at the locks of her hair and giggle when water magic danced before his young eyes.
---
It was nights like these that loved the most. The soft rays of moonlight casting shadows through her window as silk sheets wrapped around her bare form. She used to spend nights alone, only her pillow to catch her tears and now delicate fingers trail her backside as she listens to the thumping of his heart. His chest rises and falls as her own follows the rhythm. Her eyes flutter close as her tiredness grows untils it's interrupted by a cool press of lips under her ear.
A peaceful sigh leaves her lips as she tilts her head up to meet dark eyes gazing at her. Flushed cheeks was something she wore often and she lifted off of him to move further up and meet his lips with hers. He pulls her back to him, hating the emptiness between them and adores the way she shivers when his thumb traces her guild mark.
Their love was honest and raw. She had learned that nights like those in the past would haunt him as well. They would keep him up and plague his thoughts with images of death and destruction. But now, they lingered in the shadows, always there but something brighter and beautiful guarded them to peace and she focused on the way he breathed her name then the tears that dropped.
There was an overwhelming amount of happiness that she had gathered after all the years she spent in Fairy Tail. She found friendship and family bonds. Love in all forms that she cherished deeply. Her powers were seen as a gift to help others and lend a hand, not twisted into medled lies that she had spent so long untangling.
Her lips pulled from his slowly and their breaths settled between them. When she looked at Gray she found something more. She had freedom and rebirth. Forgiveness and lust wrapped into something more than love. Their bond was stronger than she could have ever dreamed and when he left kisses over her skin she wanted nothing more in life than to stay frozen in this moment.
He did the impossible. He opened a door, shined a light through her darkness and allowed her to accept the fact that she did deserve to live. She could cherish moments and keep them as her own without the threat of corruption. Her life was now her own to command and she did it with such grace and beauty that Gray couldn’t imagine her being any different.
“I love you.” He promised and there was no doubt in her mind that he meant it.
“I love you too.” She responded.
The beautiful truth was that she was finally at peace and loved herself.

I hope that you all enjoyed and thank you for being so lovely <3

Shinso Hitoshi did not sing, and isn’t the type to give even so much as a hum. But when he did—of his own volition, mind you—he never did so in front of people.
Which is how he knew this soulmate bullshit might not actually be all that contrived.
Sometimes he’d catch himself embarrassingly humming or whistling in public—usually to the absolute amusement of his friends and family—stuck with songs in his head he hadn’t even ever heard of. And it was in times like that he’d begin singing something ridiculous back, as his own petty way to clearly say ’stop’.
When the music would disappear, he’d chuckle lightly to himself and continue about his day.
Only to fall asleep that night to you whispering sweet, sweet literal nothings from the far side of his mind. Barbie Girl was a slap and a half, but if he had to check out with it rolling around in his head at two a.m. for the third night in a row, he’d dedicate his waking hours to annoying the hell out of you.
See how you liked it being startled awake—hopefully, he wasn’t 100% on the time difference—by Caramelldansen.
There were even a few times where you’d try to push music into each other at the same time. Like hijacking a radio frequency, you’d change channels on each other all day and all night until it was a warbled cacophony of noise, bordering on a headache big enough for a small city. Rarely would either of you concede, but if and/or when you did, you’d make sure the song was something you both liked.
At any other rate, Shinso had to give you credit for your taste in music; even if he didn’t recognize a fair few, he’d remember the lyrics and scour the internet later looking for them like his life depended on it. He already had a building playlist of the songs you’d sing to him—separate ones for the songs he knew, the songs he didn’t know, and his personal favorites. He kept those to himself like trade secrets, deflecting questions about what he was listening to or what kind of music he had on his phone.
Oftentimes, it was easy to guess how you were probably feeling if he just listened. There were queues of songs that made him feel relaxed and incredibly focused—which he assumed did the same for you—and others that just set him on fire.
Then there were days he felt like he was walking around with water in his shoes and a storm cloud lamenting with taut strings and frail keys. It was days like those that he liked to physically, consciously hum meme audios—or if the sadness was particularly dour, he’d find a quiet place, and sing songs that meant the world to him. Shinso wouldn’t hear anything back, and assume you were singing too.
The music said a lot about you, which was a considerable feat as he had never met you before, and he wanted to be selfish. He didn’t want to spoil what was special to you and him before he even got to see you.
You definitely worked your way around that, the maddening anonymity—using song titles to give away bits of information about one another as generously as you could. Favorite colors, films, seasons; all objective small talk suddenly turned scripture. He amassed everything in a small journal like priceless treasures—carrying around the value of another life in his pocket as casually as a to-do list. He had the music, but something tangible like this put his mind and heart at ease. You were really out there, and Shinso could meet you someday.
It wasn’t a known secret to anyone that subject posed one of his greatest fears. One day finding someone to spend the rest of ever with, with someone else’s song playing in his head.
In more than a few ways, you helped him remain largely optimistic. As long as he could hear you, he could find you, and as he got older and he acquired more freedoms and was just a little surer of himself, there was a chance.
That hope suddenly burned like ice on one derisively beautiful day.
Shinso dragged himself up the flights of stairs leading to his apartment, sliding around the stacks of moving boxes cluttering up the only way home. He tottered down the hall, and stepped through the threshold inattentively humming a new tune he’d heard that day that he thought you might like.
If there was one thing he could ever count on, it was your consistency.
Ever since you were kids, he grew up with annoying, made up nursery rhymes he still had memorized, as though he’d written them himself. They quickly turned into fun jingles, which then morphed into some of the most beautiful melodies he’d ever heard. Those didn’t usually have lyrics though, so it wasn’t like he could look them up to be sure—and yet he somehow knew they were original to you.
It was then that he realized, he had never gone a single day of his life without music.
So, when he sat back after a long night of work and readied himself for at least a few hours’ sleep, he froze. Shinso hadn’t heard a beat of song all day. Not anything besides what might have been jumping around him as he went out for errands or to the agency.
With a harsh shake of his damp hair, he swiped a towel over his stony expression. His clenched jaw was starting to drive an ache into his skull.
You probably slept all day, he reasoned.
Even though he was sure you’d sent songs to him in sleep more than a few times in your life…
No. Absolutely not.
He shook himself free of worries, refusing to end the day with fear in his heart where the music should be.
Instead, he closed his eyes and slipped into a tune he’d fallen asleep to before—one that he was sure you created. It rained over his restless consciousness like sun-drops and star-dew, pulling steady, even breaths out of him and pushing a gentle weightlessness in.
The next morning, however, brought even more questions Shinso was just slightly afraid to have answered. Still no sign of the little voice that sounded like him, but was not his own. He absently picked up on a lilting murmur somewhere from upstairs, and anchored to it the more the weightlessness slowly began disappearing.
Shinso shrugged off his nerves, whistling light and roses into the bathroom mirror through his teeth. He splashed cold water into his face and closed off the tap with a huff, sending a final apprehensive glance to his reflection before heading out the door.
He doesn’t know why he’s suddenly ineffably compelled to turn into the shop on the corner after a quick run to the market—but he is. Maybe it’s the incoherent and yet still familiar ringing in his ears, clear as a bell ushering him along his spontaneity.
Shinso’s morning started jittery and threatened to boil over in anarchical agitation. Strolling down the street with the absence of his wonted metronome, hands in his pockets tapping to the beat of an abandoned drum, he felt he stuck out like a loose screw. He was mindless in his trips to each store as he blindly reached for things he was vaguely sure he needed.
It was when he had stepped out onto the corner that something inexplicable snapped into place.
Shinso jogged across the street and through the inviting doors of a building whose name he hadn’t even bothered to read. He found himself surrounded by chrysanthemums and dahlias before he realized he’s in a floral parlor.
The redolence of fresh soil and ingratiatory verdure engulfed his wearied demeanour; the petals brushed his cheeks, and if he didn’t know any better, he’d suggest that the bouquets were reaching for him. The salvia and larkspur waved from the other end of the aisle, and he followed their purple buds to the other side of the shop.
He stopped to admire the camellias and daffodils, lightly taking them between the pads of his thumb and forefinger.
Butterflies.
Hitoshi’s eyes widened with a start, his posture straightening like he’d been struck with lightning.
They fill my guts when I look in your eyes.
He pivoted back and forth on his heels, desperately looking to the flowers for an explanation. A voice filled his head for the first time in nearly two days.
A heart that’s young is filled with sweet surprise.
This time though, the voice isn’t his. It’s clear and ringing and it doesn’t belong to him. The usual warmth he felt basking in the sound of music you whisper in his voice does nothing to compare with the exhilaration frothing in his chest now. Shinso ran a hand through his already disheveled hair, sliding it down his neck and over his shoulder.
It’s really not his, he inwardly surmised. It’s like listening to someone from inside a bubble, though; it’s a round and full sound, but he just knew if it were only slightly louder, the barrier would pop and he’d be free.
Only the innocent can sympathize.
It’s yours.
He brushed past the water lilies, clearing row after row as casually as he could in a futile attempt so as to not appear deranged.
I don’t care
The voice bled into his mind clearer, like watching the gentle shift of river to ocean water through facile currents. He turned the last corner with a breath of anticipation. In a final bit of direction, the lilac, heather, and baby’s breath spilled out of an ornate frame, unquestionably pointing to a figure facing away from him.
“About the funny way you wear your hair,” you crooned. You turned to tenderly repot the rosy begonia cupped in your palms, tucking it in place with the most serene gleam Shinso Hitoshi had ever seen. He sighed, releasing a breath he hadn’t realized he’d been holding for years.
“Someday you’ll let me put my comb up there.”
“’Till then you’re beautiful and I just stare,” Hitoshi finished softly.
You almost dropped your armful of forget-me-nots. Your strangled breath caught in your throat, hooked solely on the man standing there waiting. He gazed at you with an amused smile and crinkled, bruised eyes. It’s reminiscent of a sleepy kitten and if you hadn’t been so shocked, you’d have melted in your shoes.
“I missed your voice yesterday,” he drawled almost lazily, crossing his arms over his chest. You cleared your throat, rolling upright with a swing of your hands as they lock together at your back.
“I was going to say the exact same thing.”
His movements reminded you of a large jungle cat, stalking forward with a controlled lethargy tensed in anything but. As eager as you were, you matched him beat for beat, dragging your quivering legs in delicate strides down the aisle.
“So, is this supposed to mean we met sometime yesterday then?”
He stood right in front of you, finally close enough to recognize as the nameless and faceless childhood friend you’d been listening to since you could think on your own. You stepped into him, coming to a stop just before the tips of your shoes met his.
“It’s likely.”
“No way,” he said with a resolute shake of his head. “I’d remember you if that were the case.”
“You sound so sure of yourself.”
He stared you down with a focus you wouldn’t expect from eyes as exhausted looking as his.
“I’ve never been more certain about anything in my life.” You bashfully tugged at the fabric of your clothes, the warmth in your chest spreading upwards to beam across your face. Flattening your palm against the expanse of his collar bone, you idly swung your hands over the surface like a pendulum.
“Maybe we just missed each other then—crossed paths without finishing them,” you suggested, twirling a lock of purple around your finger.
“You wouldn’t happen to be moving in somewhere, would you?”
Your head jerked with a small start to twist at him quizzically. How could he possibly know that?
“In a complex a few blocks away from here, yes. Why?”
Shinso’s smile broke into parts amusement and incredulity.
“Looks like I’m your new neighbor,” he grinned. My neighbor? You lit up, eyes twinkling with excitement.
“That means—!”
“You’re stuck with me, yeah.”
“That can’t be such a bad thing,” you started, dropping your voice to push into him more, “—after all, I’m a little new to the area.” You blinked, letting a coquettish simper slide across your features.
“I could do with some sort of guide if I’m going to survive out here, you know.”
“I think I know a guy,” he murmured, a strained husk in his volume.
“Oh, you do, do you?” you whispered under fragile breaths.
“Yeah,” he said, leaning down to angle his face with yours. Just as you reached in to touch his lips, he pulled back suddenly, tapping his finger to his chin in thought. “Tall, blond, black streak of lightning across his bangs—hard to miss. I’ll introduce you; probably just your type.”
You rolled your eyes and punched his shoulder, gripping the fabric of his shirt in an iron fist.
“How could you possibly know my type?”
You pulled his stupid happy face to yours and kissed the mischief out of him, and he dissolved into a tender mess under your fingertips. All of this was new and unexpected, but he imagined seeing, meeting, and eventually kissing you going much different. Shinso hadn’t expected colliding like old, familiar friends; Shinso hadn’t expected missing the way you pressed into him, as though you’d done it a thousand times before. This was a first kiss between two people, but not the first time you’d ever touched.
“Be careful,” he sighed, voice richly warm, “if I didn’t know any better, I’d think you were flirting with me.”
You languidly pressed your lips to the corner of his mouth, tracing time signatures into his jawline.
“Have been since we were kids, thanks for noticing.”
“You mean to tell me Mr. Snuffles Is My Best Friend was actually for me? I’m flattered.”
“Oh yeah, definitely. Absolutely not about one of my favorite stuffed animals.”
“That’s good to know. And here I was thinking I would have to challenge a teddy bear for your hand.” You laughed heartily, pressing your forehead into his chest.
“Can I walk you home?”
You fingered the fabric of his shirt, leaning in to feel the rhythm of his heart. It was the prettiest song you had ever heard.
“I’m already there.”

NWN2 - A Draconian Encounter
(A completed thread put together, written by @shinycollectingteifling as Aku and myself, @cunninginstinct as Sand.)
Fiction is T-rated Genre: Comedy, Fluff Word Count: 3836
Warnings for: Implied Romance, Nausea-Related Sickness, Combat
Neverwinter Nights 2, Act 3: Akumamika (the Barbarian Tiefling Knight-Captain) and Sand begin their descent down Mount Galardrym post-Tholapsyx. Alive - and somehow each still in one piece! Along the way, however, they run into some less-than-friendly obstacles... Is nothing ever easy?!
shinycollectingteifling
The roars could be heard for miles around the mountain, for several minutes it was the loudest sound anywhere near the mountain. Until an almighty crack of thunder silenced them, the sickening crunch of scale and bone went unheard, as did the heavy breathing.
A little scratched up and singed but otherwise looking alright, the blue teifling panted hard until her rage subsided, leaving her a bit shaky for a few moments. It took some effort to uncurl her fingers from her hammer, leaving it in what was once the face of a young but arrogant red dragon.
While the group were picking each other up and heading back to the path down with what they could carry from the disappointing pile of treasures she turned and spotted her favourite wizard nearby. She waved to the others to keep going, that she’d catch up in a few minutes. Not too worried since most of the dangers up here had been quite thoroughly dealt with.
Moving quietly so as to not alarm him any more than he seemed to be already she crouched before him and tried to offer a reassuring smile, somewhat diminished by the smears of crimson across her face and chest. Her one working eye flicking over the elf to make sure he’d been unharmed, and her shoulders dropped with releif.
“Hey...”
cunninginstinct
Sand could never remember so desperately flinging spells in his life. The incantations left his lips with little pause between one and the next, he must have gone through at least twenty potions, and on more than one occasion he found himself hiding behind Khelgar - Khelgar! Of all people!
And at the forefront of the battle was Aku, incandescent with rage, her muscles visibly straining under taut scarred blue flesh. She leaped and struck with all the proficiency of a warrior of her caliber. The fact that she faced a dragon seemed to daunt her very little at all. Sand did not have enough time between screaming wards and protections to envy this about her.
Together, a force combined into one synergistic effort, they vanquished dread Tholapsyx at last. Sand had been hanging on with great effort to the remains of rational strategy up until the telltale crack of bone. He stood there for many moments, panting heavily, and his shoulders eventually relaxed. With relief he shakily sank down onto the top of a rugged chunk of volcanic stone, gathering his bearings.
Distantly Sand heard the voice of the knight captain trying to reach him. His eyes were still wide with terror, somewhat glazed as he reached up to rub his forehead. Every part of him was still intact. Singed, but intact. He never thought he would be so happy to find everything just the way he’d left it.
Shakily, he ducked his head and held up a hand to brandish a gloved finger. “Aku, darling,” he gulped. “Give me three seconds - my life is almost finished flashing before my eyes.” And it was just as underwhelming as he remembered it… well. Aside from his recollections of misadventures in the hosttower and running along after Aku.
shinycollectingteifling
While it would be the easiest thing in the world to assume Aku possessed all the intellect of a drunken chimp with the power of speech, she did in fact pick up on things very quickly. Some things at least. It was more her priorities for giving things thought were a little different, and she certainly wasn’t (as someone once said to her face before his got broken) a heartless killing machine.
She nodded and waited on her haunches for Sand to recover, poised ready to help if she was needed. Though she was smiling, her eyes held a great deal of worry for him.
Thinking maybe her state might be a bit unsettling she emptied a bit of her waterskin into he rhand to get most of the blood off of her face, but realised it would take a bit more effort than they had time for up here. At least her face was clean now.
Glancing up again at Sand she thought for a moment then offered the skin to him, remembering their earlier battles the gentle reminders to drink water after all the excitement, which made it easier to recover. Hoping it would have the same affect now.
cunninginstinct
Sand eased his eyes towards Aku again. She was squatting before him, and in her calloused hand she held a waterskin. His mouth suddenly felt very dry - another reminder that he was still living and breathing. “Oh… why, thank you, dear girl.” With a wan smile, he reached out to accept the offering of a drink and their fingertips lightly brushed against each other.
His hand shook as he rose it to his lips and drank steadily, though he took care to leave plenty for Aku to slake her own thirst. For many moments after he finished taking a drink, he blinked at the scorched earth where spatters of blood painted the scenery. Now that he’d found the time to ground himself, he became acutely aware of his heart hammering in his chest.
“We’re alive,” Sand acknowledged at last. He wheezed in something that might have been a chuckle, were he not so exhausted. “Aku, how in the realms did you muster this kind of fortitude…?”
shinycollectingteifling
The teifling let out a breath she’d been holding, and relaxed a bit, though looked around to make sure nothing else would be making an attempt to munch on them unawares. Looking back only to take the waterskin back, corking it and tying the loop back to her belt.
“Yes we’re alive. I promised I wouldn’t let anything hurt you.” She grinned, but it faded with the follow up question. She shifted a little uncomfortable while thinking how to answer that.
“Uh I think you probably wont like the answer. Short answer would be I got into fights a lot, like probably way more than I should’ve. Even as a kid. Not my fault. Guess I wasn’t too popular.” She tried a weak smile for him and bounced a little, eager to get going.
“You gonna be alright?” She leaned forward a bit and in a motion as tender as she could make it, placed her hand over Sand’s forehead, growing worried again.
cunninginstinct
“Hm? Oh - yes,” said Sand, reaching up to close his fingers over the tiefling’s rugged hand. “Quite fine. Nothing like a little fresh volcanic air to really set one righ–” Seconds after this incomplete utterance he turned approximately the color of the Waterdhavian algae that he sold in his shop. Unceremoniously he lurched to the side and heaved, puking up the lunch he’d picked at earlier that day. “…To set one r–”
Again, he retched. And again. Only twice more did he attempt to repeat his unfinished sentence before he gave up. At last Sand spat up the last of the foulness and he groaned. Suddenly he felt very faint and beset upon by the violent onset of vertigo. The sight before him dimmed as he swayed in his seated position. Before eventually tipping over, he faintly recalled murmuring: “Aku, would you be a dear and catch me before I flounder in my own vomit? Thank you…”
shinycollectingteifling
Seeing what was coming, Aku moved aside and very carefully pulled Sand’s hair aside, and held onto his arm. Politely looking away till he seemed to regain himself. She began to ask him a question but she could see the lights going out and quickly looped her arms around him.
It took a bit of careful maneuvering, but eventually she got him up on one arm, using her tail to keep him upright and pulled his arm over one shoulder. Satisfied he was secure she began to long trek back down the mountainside, taking things a considerably more careful path so she wouldn’t jostle Sand around too much. While dragging her hammer behind her as well.
The heat began to diminish after a while and the air was not as thick and noxious. The heavy clouds above them began opening up and a (Thankfully) cool drizzle started to soak them through. As much as Aku hated water and the rain she kept going, able to see the camp a ways further down.
cunninginstinct
Were Sand in a more controlled state, he would have recoiled to see himself giving in to such graceless displays. However, his hero was there to rescue him before he could splash about in the remains of his lunch and dignity on the scorched stone below. Suddenly he felt himself moving through the air, held above the ground by a firm, muscular arm. As reality slipped away from him, he sighed and pressed his cheek to Aku’s forehead and finally went still.
He did not shift around a lot at all and his eyes remained closed throughout most of the trip down Mount Galardrym. Even as the rain started he was still retreated into reverie for the most part. Every now and then his fingers would shift along Aku’s skin where they made contact.
If Sand were ‘awake’ he would have spared them both with a spell to protect them from the elements… except they were all used up in the scrap against Tholapsyx. Burning, scorching fire? Or a little bit of drizzle? Still, once he would finally stir from his state of semi-consciousness, they would have the luxury of being able to avoid the misty raining.
shinycollectingteifling
The slow walk down, while wet and slippery, not to mention dangerously narrow pathways, was made bearable. At least in Akuma’s mind. Finding she quite liked being this close to her favourite wizard.
A slight prickling feeling ran up her spine as she edged her way very carefully over a narrow rock pass over a very painful looking drop below. She turned just enough at the way she’d come from and felt ice drop into her stomach.
Clearly on their way up they hadn’t quite finished off one of the giants who had been hindering their progress all damn day. This one, while not the largest by any means looked angry. His flaming beard flickering as the weather turned from drizzle to a downpour, muscles bulging as he began charging at them and this narrow little bridge.
Had she been on her own Aku would have charged right back, but… She looked at Sand in her arm and at her hammer in the other and whimpered for a moment. She shouldered her weapon and pulled Sand closer to her chest as she began to run across the bridge, flinching as she heard a loud crack behind her.
Her hooves clicked rapidly across the stone and her tail thrashed side to side to help her keep her balance, she began muttering under her breath. “Don’t panic, I’ve got you I’ve got you, I promised. I promised.” Trying desperately to look only at the end of the bridge and not at Sand or what was coming behind them.
cunninginstinct
Sand’s eyes snapped open and he tilted his head upwards, furrowing his brow against the intensifying rain. He recalled fighting the dread Tholapsyx - and surviving, successfully subverting expectation - and his exhaustion suddenly and rather nauseatingly catching up with him on the mountaintop. Everything past that was beyond his mental reach. Except… Aku caught him, held him, carried him. He recalled comfort and bliss in her arms. And she was still lofting him around, but at a scurry rather than a leisurely trot.
Sudden lightning highlighted the giant behind them and his eyes widened.
“Oh for the love of the Seldarine,” he croaked.
At least the wizard’s impromptu rest did him some good to replenish his spells. As Aku hurdled down the stone path, the elf she carried with her hurriedly chanted a haste spell on her. Hopefully that should put some distance between her and the fire giant, but it would not be enough… Without missing a beat, he began to rattle out the incantation to Polar Ray, aiming true at their cranky pursuer.
shinycollectingteifling
As the magic took a hold of her, Aku took the hint and began a full on dash across the bridge, legs blurring as she crashed through the driving rain. The edge was in sight, and she felt the creeping cold from behind her and heard an almighty roar and something heavy hitting the bridge. Which then shook.
The giant had run right into the spell and started to slip, unable to hold his balance fell backwards and hit the bridge with such a force that it was beginning to crack under his weight. He shook his head and sat up to hurl his axe at the retreating duo, just as the rock gave way and his yells quickly grew quiet then silent.
The teifling glanced back and let out another whimper before looking at her companion. “I am so so sorry about this.” She twisted and spun around, launching the wizard towards the safe end of the bridge in an upwards arc, biting on her lower lip with worry while she made a much less graceful but much faster sprint across. Sliding the last few feet on her side.
She sprung up at the last moment, arms up and got bowled over backwards in her attempt to catch Sand on his return to the ground. Going horn over tail down the muddy slope.
When they came to a stop she slowly uncurled herself from around the elf, breathing hard, and looking up to make sure they weren’t still being hunted then looked down at him, ears turned downward, and a very apologetic look on her face.
cunninginstinct
If moon elves were meant to fly they’d be avariel. That’s what Sand always thought, anyways. Yet here he was, airborne, without so much as a hint of a plan of what in the realms Akuma thought she was doing. So, he did what he’d naturally do - he screamed.
Now whatever mystique he built up over the years was gone, but dire life-threatening situations had a certain way about them that put a person’s true priorities into order. And this? This was the least of his concerns at the moment.
The wind tore at his lungs as he sailed gracelessly in an arc through the air, wailing all the while. At last gravity caught up to him and he began his journey (perhaps not so much that as it was a harsh plummet) earthwards. The ground was coming close. By Mystra, there had to be something there between his sharp ears that would save him from a squashed state! However, even with all the racing his mind was doing in that moment, all he could begin to think of was whatever eulogy he’d get once whatever smears was left of him could be collected and buried. Here lies Sand, hedge-wizard, unconventional lawyer, elven pancake.
Serendipity by the name of Aku saved him from his perilous descent through the air. His yelp was cut short quite abruptly. A mass of blue muscle tumbled into him, Sand’s ragdoll body held tight against the knight captain in a protective grasp. For a while yet they traveled, but at last when their surroundings ceased its spinning Sand found he was still, miraculously, alive.
His breathing was ragged. The twitch in his left eye was sustained for several moments until his gaze found Aku. The elf’s chest continued to heave with greedy gulps of air.
“Thank you. And also never,” Sand groaned hoarsely, “ever, throw me again.” His palm found his forehead shakily, pressing against the surface in a fed up manner. “But… more importantly, thank you.”
shinycollectingteifling
Akuma let out a sigh of relief at hearing him speak and sounding (all things considered) fine. She nodded, agreeing to his terms. “You’re welcome. I uh, wasn’t exactly thinking…just sort of uhm…” She shut up quickly, not wanting to be any more of an idiot than she was making herself already. Besides, ‘Wanted to get you across safe’ didn’t want to leave her thoughts via words anyway.
Once the adrenaline wore off, she checked Sand for any obvious injuries, though there wouldn’t be much she could do about that at the moment. Satisfied nothing life threatening was going on she began to shift to stand up but hissed softly. Seems sliding over bare rock was not an ideal method of travel. She grit her teeth for a moment and tried again, managing to get upright and offered her hand for her companion. Wishing she could do something about the rain.
“I don’t think the camp is that far away now, we got quite a bit of distance covered.” She picked up her hammer, looking around the pass, it didn’t look quite the same in the dark, since her vision only made things black and white in the low light. Yet while she was figuring out where they were her gaze kept being drawn back to the hedge wizard.
Another flash of lightning impressed the urgency of the situation. So she took point and picked out the safer places to step down along the path, not quite going as quick as she would’ve liked.
She checked back over her shoulder fairly frequently, making sure Sand was still there. Feeling the need to lighten the mood somewhat she smiled. “You know, If anyone asks I’ll say that was me. I don’t think I’ve ever heard you be that loud before.”
cunninginstinct
“Well! At least some part of my dignity is maintained.” Sand rolled his eyes heavanward in fond exasperation. A delicate elven hand found the side of her face, fingertips lightly tracing her cheekbone. “Aku, dear girl,” he sighed with a sly little half-smile, “what ever am I going to do with you?” Rivulets of water trailed down the surface of her face like tears at his touch.
There was a pause and his ears twitched, soon afterwards his keen eyes zoned in on the commotion of camp quite a ways below them. His smile was slow to broaden, but it found inspiration with the offer of her hand. The wizard’s fingers closed around her palm, but not before he took advantage of the lack of surveillance upon the two of them to kiss where he caressed her cheek earlier. “Consider this the first part of my payment for saving our lives.”
He ran his fingers through his coal black hair and frowned in distaste at the sodden texture. “Mm,” he hummed thoughtfully. “And consider this the next part.” While still grasping her hand, he wove a spell to protect them from the elements for the duration of the rest of their descent. And if Tymora smiled upon them, hopefully it would be a slower and less treacherous one. “You saved me from a dragon, so naturally I must rescue you from the clutches of a dreadful cold. Ah, don’t thank me all at once.”
shinycollectingteifling
Seeing the hand close to her face she couldn’t help flinch slightly but relaxed almost immediately.
It was the strangest most surreal thing in the world to her that with the barest hint of a touch Sand could make her simply melt against his palm, eyes closing for a few moments.
She couldn’t have answered his question even if she wanted to, her brain and stomach were becoming quite fuzzy, enough to distract her until the brief kiss against her cheek.
Then the fuzz became a blaze of heat and she felt like she’d been stunned for a good while, and simply followed where he was leading her, hoping the walk down to the camp wouldn’t be too short after all, and for once thankful the dark was hiding the new colour on her face.
“Uhm yeah rescue the cold from a dragon…” She grinned, clearly hadn’t paid quite full attention and walked a little closer, looking far too happy in the dark and pouring rain when usually she’d be the first to complain about the weather. “Best wizard ever.”
cunninginstinct
Sand chuckled. “I’ll take that as a ‘thank you’.” He was not so disoriented that he would miss the flush spreading across her face, but he accepted his success with a smug, knowing smile.
They strode down the path steadily, hand in hand, protected from the rain by a magical bubble. Still he took care with his steps... it would not do well to ruin the moment by taking another impromptu tumble down the slippery hill. There would always be a better time and place for the two of them to be sprawling, and the rocks here were not looking particularly comfortable for it. With a twinge of amusement he tucked that thought away for a different time.
The gods graced the rest of their journey without any more dragons or giants, or even sudden natural disasters, that would have no doubt put a damper on their walk. Despite the dark and the rain he would dare say he even enjoyed these moments, more since they were not burdened with the risk of being watched by prying eyes. They were for each other in this simple stroll. Any lingering fire giants would just have to form a queue and wait until Aku and Sand’s precious rare time alone was over.
But alas, all good things must come to an end, and far too soon it seemed. The camp was within reasonable distance and the risk of being seen together like they were was too much of a risk for comfort. Quietly Sand kissed her hand before releasing it, gazing about warily as they continued on. The last thing they needed was a tattletale, and it was blessing enough to not be caught by any further enemies on their journey down.

Garden Wraith
3. On the Subject of Change...
The learning curve for his new normal was…interesting to say the least. He spent close to a week in the Unknown with Beatrice and her family, though mostly in the forest so as not to freak out her parents. It was there that he learned that his more…otherworldly features came out when he was upset, which then served to upset him more and it took a few minutes for Beatrice to calm him down again. Out of curiosity and a little bit of fear, they felt beneath the curls of his dark brown hair to see if there were any signs of the antlers the Beast had, and to Wirt’s horror and mortification, he felt little nubs growing from the sides of his head. Beatrice simply snorted and compared him to a newborn faun. The subject then came up of the lantern. Both looked at it in contempt since it was a source of so much of their fears.
“So, do you really think that your soul is in there?” Beatrice asked quietly as she looked at the flickering light behind the glass. Wirt looked at the flame nervously before nodding. Since he had gotten there, he felt eerily attached to the lantern in his hands, and if that was any indication, then the whispering he occasionally heard from the trees definitely settled the matter.
“Yeah. It is.” He said softly and Beatrice nodded somberly. Both knew what that meant. The most horrific thing about his nature was now he would have to depend on the oil of Edelwood trees to survive and their source wasn’t the most pleasant of things. Wirt’s skin crawled at the very notion of what he may have to do to survive and the girl patted his back sympathetically. For now, they pushed the thought into the back of their minds. They would find whatever Edelwoods left over from the previous Beast and use Beatrice’s mill to process it like the Woodsman had. For now, though, they focused on other aspects of his powers which still included his odd animal attracting ability that Beatrice laughed at when he mentioned his affinity to birds in particular. That power, though, served to comfort him in that with the old Beast, whenever he was there, it seemed that the area itself was devoid of life. Beatrice only smiled and teased that his poet soul was drawing them there, but both were relieved. If nothing else, it served as a reminder that while Wirt may have the Beast’s powers, they were not the same. Something else that Wirt found out was that he could cloak himself in pure shadow with only his eyes to provide light, much like his predecessor. It freaked them both out but was highly useful when it came to hiding and also teleporting to different points of the Unknown. It was almost something straight out of a horror film and explained as to how the Beast could seemingly appear out of nowhere. Suffice to say, discoveries were made and in between blinking in the Unknown and waking up to the morning light filtering in through his bedroom window, it was difficult to keep track of which reality he was in when he awoke.
A transition period was the best way he could describe this part of his life. It was a bit stressful and jarring and confusing as he switched between realities and realized that time was inconsequential in the Unknown. They lived in perpetual stillness since they were already dead, so the passing of seasons were only important for the holidays and crop gathering. Due to the growing confusion, Wirt started keeping a notebook with him to track the days and give him reminders as to what was going on. To his surprise, it seemed like if he slept with an object in hand and had the desire to bring the object with him, they would also show up with him in the Unknown. The same was true in reverse. It was startling, but useful and made his life easier when waking up again. Sadly, the transition not only affected him mentally and emotionally, it also attracted plenty of attention from his family. He was already under scrutiny for how different he now treated Greg. It was a welcome change, but Wirt swore that his mom sprinkled holy water on him one morning during breakfast. They weren’t really religious, it was more of a habit from his Irish grandparents and great grandparents than anything else, but it was the principle of the matter. Either way, his stepfather snickered and Greg asked if it was alright if he could splash water on Wirt too.
Speaking of Greg, the boy immediately caught on to his elder brother’s weird behavior. It was almost impossible for Wirt to keep anything from the child, especially since he knew that the younger boy only wanted to help and keep him safe, but Wirt didn’t want to scare him. Wirt now knew from experience and a general curiosity that he could manifest his more supernatural traits into reality and it sent him into a small panic attack in the bathroom that made him realize that his eyes were glowing brightly and his anxiety was what was making it manifest. After riding it out and calming down, his eyes dulled back to their normal grey and left him paranoid as to when it would happen again. He didn’t know when his eyes would flare at school or around Greg and that made him avoid his family for a while until he had another talk with Beatrice. The girl simply rolled her eyes and smacked him upside the head.
“Oww! What was that for?!” he complained, rubbing his head and she continued to glare at him.
“You doofus. You need to tell him or you’ll only make him more worried.” She huffed and he looked down and shook his head.
“I-If it tell him, he’ll only be more scared. I promised him that the Beast wouldn’t come back and now…that’s…it’s…what I am.” He said quietly, hands clenched and trembling at his hides. His mind flashed back to their moment in the hospital. The small boy had expressed his hidden fear so well. Until that moment, Wirt hadn’t known that Greg had realized the true danger he was in. The boy had such a positive outlook on their time in the Unknown and looked jovial through most of it, even when facing down the Beast. Wirt thought that the seven-year-old just didn’t understand what was going on, but Greg was much smarter than his brother gave him credit for. That moment told Wirt everything. Greg was strong and silly and brave because that was how he could process what was happening. He took enjoyment where he could because everything else was terrifying. He may not have had the full understanding of how the Beast was tricking him or how exactly to escape, but he knew that something bad was happening and that the Unknown wasn’t where they were supposed to be. Still, throughout all that, he never lost hope. Not like Wirt did. Greg had explained to him in the early hours of the morning when he snuck into the teenager’s bed after a nightmare what had happened in the time he went missing. The Queen of Clouds, his chance to escape, his wish for Wirt, and the ultimate deal with the Beast in an attempt at release. Wirt shuddered and hugged the boy tightly through whispered apologies and sobs. That wonderful, kind child had been willing to throw away every chance he had to let his older brother go free and Wirt had never felt lower. He promised again to himself that night that he wouldn’t allow his little brother to feel such terror ever again.
Beatrice stifled a sigh at her friend’s drama, but she understood where he was coming from. Her siblings, as much as they annoyed her, she would defend with her life and she knew that Wirt was the same with Greg. Still, she highly doubted that the boy would reject his brother over this and she opened her mouth to say as much.
“Wirt, if nothing else along your little adventure, I’d like to think that I got to know your brother pretty well. Does he seem like the type to be afraid of his dorky older brother? He’s much braver than you and as soon as he figures out that you’re the same lame guy, he’ll be fine.” She said gruffly, placing her hands on his shoulders. Wirt trembled under her hands and shook his head again.
“But what if he doesn’t? He was so scared, Beatrice! I-I-I don’t think I could handle it if he looked at me like he looked at the Beast…” he whispered sadly, his eyes now flickering with pearlescent colors. He could feel the black hazing over the edges of his vision as his breathing got more ragged and for a moment, he felt himself between asleep and awake, his awareness torn between his in the Unknown body and his body in the living world from the stress he felt.
“Oh, no you don’t! You’re not waking up till we’ve finished this conversation!” Beatrice called out, now crushing the shorter teen in a bear hug that knocked the breath out of him. In retrospect, that really should not have worked, but it did and when his vision cleared and air was properly flowing through his lungs, all he saw were the red curls of Beatrice’s hair.
“S-s-sorry…” he mumbled and clung tightly to her desperately as if she was his center of gravity and without her, he could be left to drift out into the vast sky or sink into the cold ground.
“Don’t apologize for that. I get that you’re worried, even if I think it’s over nothing.” She murmured back, her grip not loosening, but she was now rubbing soothing circles over his spine.
“It’s not nothing. Its Greg.” Wirt protested and Beatrice shook her head.
“You’re underestimating him. The kid’s got an unhealthy hero worship of you and I really doubt that a little thing like accidentally getting a freaky wooden death spirit’s powers is gonna deter him. He’s way more persistent than that.” he huffed, chuckling over her thoughts. In the time she got to know the two boys, she had tried her best not to get attached to them, but she had and thought of the boy as one of her own little brothers. He was charming in his odd childlike logic, was loyal to a fault, and his positivity was endearing. Even when she betrayed him, she knew he would forgive her and it made her guilty to think of afterwards. The boy was strong and resilient and there was no way he would be afraid. Not of Wirt. Never of Wirt.
“Just trust me and tell him. I guarantee he won’t be afraid. And if he is and things don’t go well, I’ll help you run away or something, okay?” she asked and Wirt blinked in surprise, pulling away from her embrace.
“Wait, what?” he asked, startled, but the iridescent colors were gone now.
“I mean, it would be kind of pathetic to run away from a seven-year-old, but I wouldn’t put it past you. Don’t think you’d make it very far either, but hey, you’re a stubborn jerk who beat a monster, so who knows? Still, running away from a kid is pretty lame. And that kid is also Greg, so I think he’d find you pretty easy too.” She continued on as Wirt started to sputter in indignation. There we go. Rile him up. If the gentle approach wasn’t breaking through to him, she would appeal to his stubborn streak. That and she was out of sentimental words for the week. She swore this kid was making her soft.
“Wh-what? No I wouldn’t! I would just, y’know, never talk to him again. Like, ever.” He stammered and Beatrice rolled her eyes, hand on her hips.
“You really think that’s gonna work with Greg? The human chatterbox and friend machine? Yeah, that’s definitely not gonna work.” She scoffed and Wirt sighed, nodding in agreement and kicking at the snow at his feet. She was right. Scared or not, repulsed or not, there was no stopping Gregory Cowan from opening his mouth and commenting about whatever was on his mind. The only times that Wirt had ever heard the boy silent was when he was either eating or sleeping and even then he still had a propensity to open his mouth and let sound come out.
“You’re right, you’re right… I just…I’m trying to be a good big brother to make up for the terrible one I’ve been for half of my life and all of his life. I just don’t want to scare him and never get the chance to make it up to him…” he said softly and Beatrice nodded.
“And you will. Just tell him the truth. He won’t leave you.” He said firmly and Wirt took a deep breath, feeling himself being firmly settled into the Unknown again, the edges of his vision clearing and he nodded.
“You’re right. I’ll…tell him…. He deserves to know.” He relented and Beatrice nodded in agreement, patting his shoulder.
“Of course I’m right. My ideas are always right.” She said and Wirt rolled his eyes.
“Adelaide was a good idea?” he asked and the girl’s cheeks flushed bright red.
“Ok, but that was once!” she argued and Wirt’s skepticism shot through the metaphorical roof along with his eyebrow.
“Getting turned into a bird, stealing from Endicott, sneaking onto the frog ferry…” he trailed on and the elder girl growled and slapped a hand over his smirking mouth.
“Hush. We don’t talk about those! And don’t chance the subject! We’re talking about you and Greg.” She said sternly, though the blush remained on her face and was now going to the tips of her ears. The mention of the subject at hand was sobering though and the smile soon faded from the boy’s face.
“I need to tell him.” he said quietly, resigned to his fate. Around them, the Unknown swayed with a phantom breeze, the snow blanketing whatever noise there might have been.
*
Wirt felt nauseous and he jittered in place on his bed. He had woken up that day with full determination to tell Greg about him, but that resolve was shaken as soon as he saw the boy at the table for breakfast. He had since shut himself up in his room, pacing nervously and trying not to imagine how much his eyes were glowing. He wanted to tell him. He needed to tell him. but the doubt still lingered in the back of his mind. Luckily, or unluckily for his nerves, his indecisiveness was no match for the curiosity and worry of a seven-year-old. The light knocking on the door was the only warning the teen got before the child burst into his room with all the enthusiasm and eagerness of a puppy.
“Wirt! Wirt! This is urgent business! Jason Funderburker is in need of your affection cuz it’s been so long!” the boy yelled, holding the frog up and waving him in his elder brother’s face.
“Wait-Greg-what?” Wirt stuttered and Greg climbed up on the bed, seating himself next to the other with a look of exasperation on his youthful face.
“We want to spend time in you! You’ve been in here so long, I thought you’d have grown a long white beard! Like Santa! Or a really old guy!” the boy exclaimed and Wirt rolled his eyes, chuckling.
“I haven’t been in here that long. I can’t grow a beard that fast!” he disputed and Greg looked at him skeptically, poking an inquisitive finger at his chin. Wirt pushed his hand away but the boy was persistent, continuing to poke him till Wirt was now actively trying to wrestle him to the bed in order to poke his chin. It sent both of them into a fit of giggles and they heard Jason Funderburker croak along with them. Finally they stopped to catch their breaths, the remnants of laughter leaving them.
“So, can you tell me why you’re not happy now?” Greg suddenly asked and Wirt froze in place but tried his best to force his body to relax and sound nonchalant.
“Wha-what do you mean? I, uh, I’m fine. It’s just the whole snow on the ground thing is all!” he squeaked, failing at looking casual. Greg didn’t look convinced and sat on his chest.
“Are you mad at me again?” he asked quietly and Wirt shot up immediately, practically bowling the boy off him before he snatched him close to hug him.
“What?! Of course not!” he shouted and Greg hugged him back tightly.
“So why are you sad?” the boy asked and Wirt took a breath, steeling what nerves he had and looking the boy dead in the eye.
“I-I’m not sad. Just a little, um…scared? I guess? But it’s nothing to do with you! You didn’t do anything wrong.” Wirt said frantically, the words tumbling out in a rush. Greg, for his part, simply looked confused.
“Greg, I promised I’d protect you no matter what. I don’t want to scare you, but I-I-I think you need to know…”he said quietly and Greg’s eyes seemed to light up in understanding.
“Oh. Is it about how you have the same pretty eyes the Beast had?” he asked innocently end Wirt nodded before freezing.
“Exact-wait, what? You know about that?” Wirt gasped and Greg snorted with laughter.
“Yupp! I saw your eyes when I woke you up a while ago, but you didn’t know yet. I’m glad you do now. Why do you have them? Do I have them? Are my eyes beautiful too?” the boy asked curiously, mind now wandering off in his own world and hugging his frog in contemplation. Wirt felt whatever tension and anxiety he had wash out of him, leaving him limp and almost collapsing back onto his bed. For lack of a better word, he was stunned. Greg knew? He had known for a long time and hadn’t said anything just to make Wirt comfortable.
He really did have the best brother, though he didn’t appreciate the anxiety that came from all of this.
“Why didn’t you tell me before? Weren’t you scared?” Wirt asked in a breathless rush, hugging his brother tightly. Greg looked up at him and shrugged, though he had a serious look on his face.
“I didn’t want to scare you. You were already not sleeping, so I didn’t want to make it worse.” the boy said simply and Wirt could only blink in shock.
“You…you weren’t scared? Of, y’know, what I am? Of my eyes?” the teen asked softly and Greg’s eyebrows scrunched a little in confusion and contemplation.
“Why would I be? I think you were more scared than I was.” Greg said innocently and once again, Wirt hugged the younger boy close, giving him a comforting squeeze.
“Thank you…” he whispered and Greg hugged back tightly, enjoying the affection and patting his brother’s back.
“No need to thank me, brother o’ mine!” he said cheerfully, but there was also relief running through his tiny body. He knew that the Beast was gone, the faint memories of his semi-conscious state echoing with the dying screams of the monster as its soul was snuffed out reminding him every time he dared remember it, but he wouldn’t deny that the glowing eyes of his brother had worried him. Now he knew that he shouldn’t have worried. Beast or not, weird tree powers or not, this was still his older, worried brother and nothing would change that.
“So does that mean you can be a tree now? Can you turn other people into trees? You really shouldn’t do that cuz it’s not nice.” Greg asked, continuing on with his musings as Wirt could only listen and laugh, the relief leaving him lose and willing to muse with him about his newfound powers.
*
The next two years until the next big change in the brothers’ lives was a series of highs and lows filled with making better friends, two different comings out and the parties that came afterwards, meeting witches, learning magic, and turning said friends into a makeshift witch coven. Turning fifteen was stressful in many ways and Wirt felt like he was on the verge of a breakdown from the secrets he was carrying and finally gave in when his friends finally confronted him. Luckily, both of his “coming out” gatherings went well. Sara and the rest of their friends took to him being a weird death tree being rather quickly, asking him questions and sympathizing about his and Greg’s trip to the Unknown. Telling them was also incredibly helpful in keeping his secret while in school since his anxiety tended to make his eyes flicker iridescent. Compared to that particularly nerve wracking reveal, Wirt’s sexuality seemed like nothing. By that, he meant that he still almost passed out from nerves and was only calmed down when his friends and Greg all surrounded him in a group hug.
Both brothers grew closer through all of that, learning Wirt’s new powers together with the younger boy delighting in each ability he showed. Their practice was done at the cemetery with the now dubbed “witch’s circle” among the graves of people they knew in the Unknown, the eyes of the dead watching Wirt’s progress with approval as he changed into something more, better, than the Beast his predecessor was. But that was a story for another time. In his sixteenth year, Wirt would start a new journey and it started with a few casual words spoken by his mother in the early morning over a bowl of cereal.
“Jonathan and I will be going on a honeymoon soon.” His mother announced and Wirt could only stare at her back in a sleepy haze, wondering if he heard right. “Ohhh! What’s what? Are you gonna dip the moon in honey? Is that why it goes yellow sometimes?” A now nine-year-old Greg asked excitedly from next to the elder boy, syrup from his pancakes sticking to his cheeks.
“No, Greg. It’s what married people do after they get married to, uh, spend time together.” Wirt answered quickly, refraining from telling most of the truth and hoping his explanation didn’t come out as awkward as he thought it was. Luckily, his brother seemed to gloss over that fact.
“Oh. But haven’t you been married for a while? Why now? And when? Can we go too?” the boy continued with his slew of questions. Their mother chuckled and ruffled his hair.
“Well, he and I have been planning it for a while but haven’t really found a good time to do it since the marriage and Greg’s birth was so close together.” She explained and turned back to the stove. “And no, honey. Like Wirt said, it’s for married people only. And we’ll be doing it over the summer!” She announced cheerfully, though Greg pouted in displeasure at not being able to go anywhere.
“Oh, well, um, good for you guys, I guess? So, does that mean that we’ll be, um, alone for a while in the summer?” Wirt asked and felt nervous when his mother sighed and turned to him, taking on the same nervous look he usually had. “Well, see, that’s what I wanted to talk to you both about.” She said hesitantly and that immediately knocked all tiredness from his body and he sat up straighter.
“What do you mean?” he asked.
“Well, at first we were planning on making it a small trip for a week, but then we got so excited at the thought and since you two were getting along so much better recently, we figured that it would be fine to leave you two longer than that.” She rambled, smiling sheepishly as she explained in a rush. “Not without a guardian, of course! Jonathan has an uncle up in Oregon that we are sending you to and it might be an adventure for you boys too! Along with it being a good opportunity to get to know more family!” she finished and now both boys were stunned, though Greg recovered quicker, his trademark enthusiasm taking hold.
“Ohh! Really?! That’s amazing! We get to go up to Oregon for the summer? We get to meet another uncle! Maybe he’ll be an uncle like Uncle Endicott, Wirt! Do you think he has a big mansion too? Can I bring Jason Funberburker with us?” Greg burbled out excitedly.
“Wait, wait, wait. What? An uncle? Are you sure that’s a good idea? I mean, not that it’s a bad thing to meet relatives, or that you aren’t entitled to having some time for yourselves, because that’s good in theory, but we haven’t even met the man. I can take care of Greg here while you’re gone, so you don’t need to send us all the way to Oregon!” Wirt rambled right back to his mother, his anxieties flooding his thoughts. What if the man didn’t like him? What if he didn’t like Greg? Wirt didn’t think that would happen since everyone liked Greg, but it was still a fear. What if he didn’t like them bringing a frog with them? And what about his friends and his lack of summer plans he wanted to make with them? And what about the poetry he would have to hide from him? And his abilities! How would he manage to hide that when they were as blaringly obvious? He hid his face in his hands to cover his eyes as the stress seemed to work through his chest.
“Oh, sweetie! It’ll be alright!” his mother quickly rushed over and hugged him and he sank into her embrace gratefully, feeling the comfort beat back his fear.
“I know you aren’t comfortable with new places, but Oregon is a beautiful place! It has plenty of forests that you boys are fond of and would definitely appeal to your poetic soul, honey! And from what Jonathan has told me, his uncle is a little eccentric, but very nice, so there’s no need to worry!” she said reassuringly and pet his hair. Wirt felt himself relaxing with the attention and huffed a little when Greg joined in on the comfort.
“It’s just…are you sure we can’t just stay here? I’m sixteen. I can take care of Greg by myself. Don’t you trust me?” He said quietly as he looked up at his mother and she sighed and shook her head, dropping a kiss to his forehead.
“It’s not that I don’t trust you, Wirt. I know you’re a responsible young man, but I can’t just leave you alone for the whole summer unsupervised. Neither Jonathan or I have any relatives here and we’d both feel better if there was someone to look after you both.” She said softly, petting his hair. Wirt sighed and felt the trembling from her hand. He inherited his nervous nature from someone and it as only now that he was calming down that he realized his mother was just as freaked out about this as he was. Feeling his panic ebb, his shoulders slumped and he nodded slowly, looking down. He couldn’t deny her this. Not when she was so excited and he knew that if he really pushed this she would stay with them instead of going on her trip with his step-dad so they wouldn’t be left alone.
“…so it’s an uncle of Jonathan’s?” he asked quietly as he looked up again and he could feel her mother relax at his acceptance.
“Yupp! So, he would technically be your and Greg’s great uncle!” she said brightly, giving his shoulder squeeze and sending a grateful smile his way. He smiled back slightly in acknowledgement and returned to his now soggy cereal. “Really? So how is he a great uncle? Is that just the next step from a good uncle?” Greg asked curiously and made Wirt roll his eyes before patting his head.
“That’s not what mom means, Greg.” He explained and Greg looked at him skeptically.
“Are you sure? Just normal uncles are pretty good, so I can only expect that the uncles of our parents are great since they’re older.” He explained in the only way that an elementary school child could. With that, breakfast was concluded and more details of the plan were divulged and come the end of August, their bags were packed and it was a plane and a bus to their new destination. It was certainly an adventure to get their all on its own with Wirt keeping track of their traveling schedules, trying his best to keep a hyperactive Greg entertained until he finally crashed from the jetlag, checking a frog through the airport and bus terminals, and subsequently keeping his brother away from said frog while on the plane. On the bus, Wirt held his brother close while he slept, holding his frog like a stuffed animal, and looked at the ever-changing terrain through the window. The trees multiplied as time went on, growing thicker and thicker as they got closer, and he let his mind wander to something more poetic. The trees were different that those of the Unknown, but they seemed to give off a similar feeling of mystery, like they contained secrets that they dare not divulge for fear of retribution. Or perhaps they kept the secrets from those that were unworthy of learning them? Either way, he could feel this soul in the lantern flutter in excitement at the prospect of exploring this new forest and finding new inspiration. His mother was right, it truly was a beautiful place.
“Mmmm….Wirt?” came the sleepy voice beside him and Wirt turned to see his brother eyes flutter open and a yawn escape his lips.
“Right here, Greg.” He assured the younger boy and Greg relaxed from his slight tension.
“Are we there yet?” he asked and Wirt shook his head.
“No. Not yet. But I think we’re almost there. Look at how many trees there are.” He said and Greg brightened immediately, climbing over his brother’s lap to get a better look outside.
“Wow! There’re more trees here than back home! It’s like the Unknown! But the trees are different!” he said excitedly. In the recent years he had become fixated on learning the different types of trees and Wirt didn’t doubt that he could name every single tree in this forest.
“Oh yeah? Well, we’ll go exploring for a bit after we settle in, okay?” he assured Greg and the younger boy smiled brightly, squeezing his frog to him.
“You hear that, Jason Funderburker? We get to go on forest adventures with Wirt again!” he said excitedly and practically vibrated in place from excitement as soon as they saw the big sign passing them by, announcing their destination. Wirt huffed a laugh and gathered their things as the bus slowed, rumbling to a stop at what seemed like just the side of the road where a single car was parked.
“Oh. I guess that must be him. U-unless there’s someone else waiting for someone else here. I mean, that would probably make sense since we’re not the only ones on the bus that are probably headed here but maybe it is and-“
“Wirt, look! It’s our Uncle!” Greg cut his older brother off gleefully and dashed down the aisle to exit the bus.
“Wait, Greg!” Wirt yelled, scooping up their backpacks before dashing after the excitable child. The other riders looked at him in sympathy and let him pass which Wirt felt grateful for and he stumbled out of the bus as Greg waved excitedly with his frog.
“Hi, Uncle! It’s nice to meet you! I’m Greg and this is Wirt and this is Jason Funderburker! We’re here for the summer!” Greg announced happily to the two figures leaving the car.
“Greg! Don’t just go running off!” Wirt scolded before straightening himself out and settling his eyes on the thinner of the two older men. He recognized him vaguely from the picture Jonathan showed them before they left, though he was definitely more aged than the picture and there was something in his eyes that Wirt was a bit wary about.
“Hello, Sir. Thank you for having us here.” Wirt said politely and the other elder man scoffed a little. The boy’s Uncle gave a pleasant chuckle and waved his hand dismissively.
“Aww shucks, there’s no need fer any “sir” nonsense! The name’s McGucket. Fiddleford McGucket or just Uncle Fiddleford to you. Welcome to Gravity Falls, kids!”

PREV ._. NEXT
Curled up on your bed, sad music playing in your headphones as you watch the rain hit against the building, watching the drops rundown your bedroom window. The sound of Hoseok coming home from work, made you try to silence your sniffles as you try to shuffle deeper into bed, ignoring the buzzing from ethier Namjoon or Jin. Both after Yoongi had run out, left with jaws dropped that quickly snapped shut as Jin moved to chance after Yoongi as Namjoon moved to sit next to you. You quickly lost your breath, and your mood went sour so you too got up and left, but not before Namjoon had promised he and Jin would ‘talk’ to your so called Soulmate.
Soulmate my ass. You thought as you whipped the tears that were resting on top of your cheek, a soft knock on your door made you shuffle and turn away from the entry of your room. Headphones slipping out, making you grunt as you toss them with your phone onto the floor, too annoyed at the world to even bother with them. When no answer from you came, Hoseok opened the door slowly, the sound making you bring the covers over your head as you hear his feet pad against the wood flooring.
“Y/n? I brought dinner...ladybug?” He asked, making you shuffle as you tried to fight a sniffle, but he still heard you as he stepped further into your room. “What's wrong?” He pushed as he sat down on your bed, letting out another sniffle as you let the tears start to fall again. Shaking your head, you felt his hand on top of your cafe as you tried to kick them away but your body felt weak. It felt broken. So you laid there fighting back a sob, till it came erupting out making Hoseok quickly move to wrap his arms around you, dragging you to lay against his chest as you let out heavy breaths. “Oh Y/n.” Your back pressed to his front as he tangled his legs with yours, his lips pressed to the back of your head as you heard him inhale, ready to exhale questions.
“Please don’t, I’ll just cry more.” Your words had him letting out a breathy chuckle as he tightened his hold around you, one of his hands moving down your arm. Hand lacing with yours as you brought it to your chest, kissing the knuckles of his fingers making him sigh as he brought his chin to the top of your head. “I hate soulmates.” Your words were mumbled as you closed our eyes, your body shivering as you heard him softly gaspe at you. You, the one person he’s known not to ever question the soulmate thing, the one who swore up and down that soulmates are the thing in the world that makes every bad thing worth it. You were the person who dreamed, and read about soulmates. Dreamed of one day being able to love someone, even if it was platonically, with every fiber in your being and it feeling just..just right. You made it sound so worth it, worth pain, worth the waiting. Yet the words you had just said, seemed to be so full of positivity it scared him. Your words scared him which made him shake his head as he looked down at the top of your head. There is no way you believed the words that just passed through your slightly chapped lips. No way.
“No you don’t.” He mumbled making you shake your head as you pushed away from him and sat up, your body resting against the headboard of your bed.
“Yes I do. I hate them. I hate the stupid red string of fate. I wish it wasn’t real. I wish it was all fake. I wish I didn’t have the university choosing someone for me. I hate them.” Pain. All that was laced with these words were pain, and it seemed to tunnel through his chest as well as he moved to sit up next to you kicking the sheets down away from the two of you. His body moving to sit criss crossed in front of you as his brown eyes stare at you, your knees pressed to your chest as you feel pain crave itself into your heart as you bury your face into your crossed arms. “Like why? Why are they a thing? Why are we made for someone who we’ve never seen, never met, never loved. I mean look at me, why would someone like me? Let alone love the idea that I’m somehow made for them. Like I look in the mirror some day and wonder why the fuck I’m made the way I am...and who would love me. And I fooled myself in thinking that someone out there is gonna love me. That they will hold me and paint my skin with their love, like my parents. But they see you and run away, not even trying to get to know past these fucking flaws. This fat ugly body. I wish I could’ve been born in a world where soulmates were a dream, and not the other way around, Hoseok.” You look up at him, sniffling as his hand reaches for yours that had fallen to the bed, his fingertips lacing with yours. His eyes closed as he took a deep breath in. “Why did they choses him for me, I thought that black ink color was so beautiful..I thought he thought the gold was beautiful on him too... But I should’ve known it was the sigh of rejection. Of this..this deadly pain. Why did the universe choose him for me?” His eyes blink open to stare at you, his eyes filling with his own tears as he gives you a frown.
“Cause, you are gonna be his everything one day. One day he’s gonna know every little thing about you. He’s gonna know how you are addicted to coffee and sour candy, and how you have this love for animals that goes far more than others. He’s gonna see the good and the bad in you and still smile. He’ll learn how to make you laugh, how to stop your tears. He’s gonna cause the greatest heart breaks in your life, and the most beautiful moments in your life. He is gonna be so lucky to even have every single ounce of your love, cause I know how lucky I am to just get the silver of the love you have.” he smiles at you, moving closer to cup your face making you look at him, glossed over eyes, red nose and chewed lips. “One day you’ll know everything about him, one day him running away will make sense to you. It’s not gonna hurt any less. But you’ll be able to forgive him, because you’ll know his smile. His laugh. Y/n, he’ll know you as nothing but the woman who loves him so passionately, so deeply that he knows he’ll be able to just fall into you and you’ll make sure to give him nothing but protection from the darkness around him. Do you know what being Gold means?” His question had you shaking your head as he chuckled, as he got up on his knees and pressed his forehead to yours before pulling away. “Gold..gold is the love that people dream of. It's like watching the sunrise after a gloomy day, it's that hug you get after a devastating day. It’s what your books you read about come from. To be someone's gold, it to be the air they breathe, the bed they sleep in and the one being in this world that they can tell their deepest secret too. Y/n you’re that person he dreams about when he needs to calm down. So don’t double yourself. Don’t throw away your idea of the red string of fate, cause you and I both know how worth this pain is gonna be, especially when you can finally call him yours.”
______________________________________________________________
Scrubs, the best pieces of clothing ever made. You swear by it, swear by them. Not only do they have so many pockets, more than you can count sometimes but the way they breathe has always made working long shifts easier. You were at the front, your head peeking over Joy's shoulder seeing the patient chart of the day, your fingers crossing, hoping for no walk-ins. Sighing you see Jimin walking to the still locked door as the clinic hasn’t opened yet, moving you open the glass door for him to be greeted with a brown small poodle in his arms. Your head tilts in confusion, as he hands you the dog, realization crosses your face as you look at your best friend with wide eyes as you pull the six month old male puppy closer to your chest.
“I forget to tell you didn’t I.” His eyes slightly wide, dark bags under them as he moves to the back, your body trailing after him as he places his stuff down in the break room. “She surrendered him, now I have a foster. He’s name is Holly.” Nodding you nuzzled your nose into the top of his head making him slightly brack at you, licking your cheek as you let out a giggle.
“He is adorable, how anyone could mistreat you or any little baby like you blows my mind.” You said, slipping into a baby voice making the poodle's tail start to rapidly wag as his body started to wiggle making you fight back a laugh as the head Vet came in, Minho. His eyes move to the puppy in your arms, and he smiles quickly moving to pat the top of his head as he looks at you.
“Busy day, and you are with me most of it.” Nodding you gave Holly back to Jimin, who was greeted with a wiggle amount of kiss making both you and Minho chuckle as the two of you leave the room. “We have three spays, a mass removal, and an eye removal scheduled for us today. Luckily we have Mina here today to pick up some of the other scheduled surgeries today as well. Bless that woman.” His eyes gleam at the mention of her, the memory of blues and teal hues painting across their skin had you thinking of the inky black. Thinking of Yoongi, and your thoughts slipped before you could stop them.
“I met my soulmate the other day.” Your word seemed to have made the still closed clinic freeze as you hear a gasp, and the sound of scuffing shoes making you look behind you to see Johnny had stumbled slightly from walking out of the bathroom. Your eyes widen as you press your hand to your mouth, processing that you had just outly admitted that you had indeed found the one.
“Holy shit...I’m sorry..does Jimin know?” Johnny says, making you shake your head slowly as you look at Minho. His lips parted as the chart in his hand slightly dropped. Johnny's smiles grow as he lets out a loud yes, making you giggle as he points to you. “I know something before that little shit! Finally!” Sighing you watch as he moves to the back making you shake your head as you turn back to Minho. A large smile on his face as he looks at you, his eyes closing for a second till he takes a deep breath and the two of you start walking to the first exam room when the sound of the door dinging entered your ears.
“Congratulations, I feel like it was just yesterday you were interning here to get your hours to pass your tech class. Now here you are, one of the best techs I’ve ever had and you're the first of my techs to find the one. I hope he treats you well.”
“Same here.” You said with an honest breath, your eyes closing when you hear it, the loud gasp and the sound of a cup slamming against a table.
“Y/n found her what, and told your dumbass before me? Yo little bitch get your fat ass over here! I just want to talk!” _____________________________________________________________
“Moon!” Jin said with a smile on his face as you walked into the coffee shop, a smile spreading on your face as he pulled you into a side hug. Chuckling as you slid into your chair, your hand rubbing the back of your neck, your scrubs slightly tightening as you moved. Looking you see soft caring eyes staring at you, his head tilted making you shake your head as he sat next to you. “I’m so sorry that he..I..I could beat his ass.” His words had your eyes widening as you grabbed his hand, making his closed eyes snap open as he stared at you. “He..he’s not a bad person just..I want you to find out things on your own but at the same time I need to at least let you know that it really isn’t it. He was with someone before and she..she literally tore him apart. He’s scared, and when he saw what color he put onto your skin seemed to make his fear worse..just know it isn’t you.” Smiling softly at the older male you squeezed his hand tighter.
“I get it I guess..I..I mean it made me feel like shit but I just have to think of the color I put onto his, its gold. I’m supposed to help him make his life golden, better, more positive. At least that's what I believe.” Your words had him shocked, as he pulled back and sat up straight, his smile growing as he looked at you.
“I’m so happy you said that. I was so scared, scared that you’d hold this over him. This fear of loving someone again.” He pauses as a boy brings a cup of black coffee out and sets it in front of you. His ash blonde hair falling in his eyes as he smiles at the two of you, as you take a sip you see a dark clad figure walk in. Your body seems to vibrate, making your eyes close as you place the mug down and look to Jin, his own eyes widening as he moves to get up. “You..just stay put.” Nodding you open your phone to distract you from the warm feeling spreading through your body, the shivers.
Taking a deep breath you hear hush whispers, and the clicking of someone typing on a laptop, laughter of a few friends and the sound of the espresso machine. Taking a deep breath you scroll through instagram, your other hand grasping the black hot mug. Hearing the scuffing of shoes, you look up to see downcasted coffee colored eyes. His hands dug deep into the pockets of his large coat, his ripped jeans showed just how thin his legs were making you slightly self conscious with how big yours were compared to his. Shaking your head you slip your phone into your scrub top pocket, he rocks a bit on his heel as you cast your eyes to the seat Jin was once in. He nods as he quickly sits down, your hand bringing the coffee up to your lips, sipping as you push a piece of your hair back behind your ear as he clears his throat.
“So..your name is Y/n?” His question made you nod as you let out a slightly cough as you look balck up to see Jin had set down another cup of coffee and a lemon cake for you making you smile at him.
“You're Yoongi?” You ask after watching the board man leave, he nods as he clears his throat again and pulls the mask he had resting around his face off as his hands move to run through his black hair. “I’m not mad..about what happened.” You blurted out, your eyes closing as you mess with the mug in front of you. “I mean it hurt me a little..no actually it hurt me a lot. But I’m not mad.” Looking up you see him staring at you with parted lips and wide eyes, his hair slightly messed up, making you want to reach up and fix it. Let out a breath, place your hand onto the table, palm up. His eyes cast down to it, your chubby fingers making his thin ones crave to hold them, touch them. The fire in him matching your own, so he falls into it. His breathing slightly speeds up as he lifts one of his hands, letting it fall into your plan, watching the sparkling gold color spread across his hand as you wrap your fingers around his hand. Watching the black ink spread across your skin, made a smile lift on your cheeks as he looked as if he was gonna run again making you tighten your grip.
“Why are you smiling? It looks like I’m gonna kill you.” He whispers making you shake your head, the gold color climbing up higher on his skin as the black ink fades out slightly at the end of your wrist.
“I like it. Make me feel badass.” Your words had his eyes closing as he smiles softly shaking his head as you now hear your new favorite sound, his chuckle, entered your ears. “I like that sound.” You mumble making his eyes shoot up, as his cheeks begin to dust with a soft pink color as he looks down at his coffee slipping his hand away from yours for a second as he takes a big gulp of coffee. His hand quickly snatching yours before you could slip it back into your lap.
“I like holding your hand...makes me feel badass too.” Smiling brightly at him, you rest your head against the palm of your free hand as you look at him, his eyes doing the same. Though they flickered down to your hands every few seconds, as if to see the color disappearing, fading. Clearing his throat you watch him shift a bit as he looks at you, his lips parting as he closes his eyes for a second then opening them up again. “Are you a nurse?”
“Oh uhh no, not for humans at least. I’m a vet tech.” You chuckle slightly at your own joke as you sit up, your hand slightly slipping from his making him tighten his grip on your hand.
“So you work with animals, that's cool. I..I make music.” He said, his eyes moving around as if trying to think about how to talk. You couldn't help but coo at his shy nature, his thumb moving to rub against the back of his hand as you look over to see Jin and Namjoons eyes on you. Rolling your eyes you look back to Yoongi and squeeze his hand and pull away.
“I’m gonna pay for our coffees, then we can go on a walk so those two,” You pauses as the two of you look at your idiot friends, “Don’t eavesdrop, and scare us.” Your words had him chuckling till he registered that you were gonna pay, making him shoot up and grab your arm gently.
“I can pay.”
“You have a lift time to pay for things for me. Let me do it first.” Your words were soft, his eyes wide in shock as he nodded, his head looking downward as you moved to the front and pulled your card out. Paying , you see Jin smirking as Namjoon chuckles as he swipes your card. “Stop laughing, not funny.”
“No but its fucking cute.” Namjoon said, making you roll your eyes as you shake your head, turning around you walk back up to the black haired man as you lace your fingers with his.
“Where too?” he asks, making you smile brightly at him , though nervousness is hidden deep in his eyes as he looks around and up to the cloudy sky. You couldn’t help but swing your hand as you left the coffee shop.
“Anywhere as long as it's with you.”

of falling stars and crescent moons
a wandagatha oneshot (also on ao3)
pairing: agatha harkness/wanda maximoff
au - gods and goddesses
word count: 3472
_
In the beginning, there was nothing.
Nothing, however, was already something and, when the Elder Gods looked upon the blank canvas that one day would become the universe, they saw it was good. Life could be nurtured here, they would say. Their children would gasp excitedly, Papa, papa! Will you make me a star too? Ah, she already was. His little star.
Soon, my child, He would answer softly, bouncing his daughter on his knee.
And then, in the blink of an eye and a whispered command-
Nothing became everything.
An explosion. The Big Bang, some of the Elder Gods liked to call it.
Light flashed in unimaginable directions. Colorful waves of matter spread across space with unrestricted power and every once in a while the Gods would hear their rumble reverberating as thunders in the sky. All that was necessary for life to flourish was already coming together.
Nebulas and constellations now decorated the universe like splashes of paint on a black canvas. Stars colliding and galaxies being formed. Upon seeing part of their hearts and souls coloring their creation, the Gods rejoiced. Their creation was good.
But something was missing.
The universe couldn't be left barren. It was not made for that. What was the point of it all if not for life to be created and appreciated? To be lived? They needed a place where life could bloom and grow in all its glory. From birth till death. Where all creatures could exist.
So, hand in hand with one another, the Gods closed their eyes and imagined their second creation: the Earth. A small blue planet, born from the fire and blossoming under divine light. But darkness still lingered there, hiding just beneath the myriad of clouds and thunder. No living beings could settle in such an inhospitable environment.
He looked down on his child clinging to his legs. His beautiful Wanda. Running his fingers through her hair, he knew a decision had to be made.
"My darling, Papa needs to tell you something." His voice was deep but soothing and it reached the little girl's ears as if it were a breeze. She glanced up at him with curiosity gleaming in her eyes.
"Yes, Papa?"
"You're my light, Wanda. You always have been and always will be. But this world needs you to shine on them. To guide them when darkness looms over their heads." Tears threatened to fall but He stood strong. A little hand grasped his in a surprisingly firm hold.
He pulled her up in his arms with a choked sob.
"You need to be their sun, little one." The girl tried to wiggle out of his embrace such was the excitement she felt. "I'll make you a star. Their star."
A tear fell.
Twinkle, little star.
The Sun was created.
—
Wanda sighed dejectedly.
Being the sun goddess was total, utter boredom. She had to wake up early every day to shine on those hideous living beings down on Earth—just a bunch of microbes, for dad's sake— and when nighttime came, there was no one to talk to! Not even a falling star! Asteroids were rude so she didn't even bother with them. It was lonely.
She knew her dad had been right. She knew how important her mission was and how essential for life to exist it was. In spite of all that… Wanda felt unbearably alone. Don't get her wrong, solitude was becoming to her. Even though she was an actual goddess, she only felt like one when she gazed down upon her kingdom. Her planet. And yet-
There was no one by her side. No one to share the sky with her. The days were bright and beautiful; the nights, dark and rueful. And it's been like that for the past 4 billion years. Wanda's lips trembled at the sudden realization.
4 billion years on her own. What kind of existence is that?
When the first tear fell, others soon followed. The night was silent if not for the sorrowful cries of the Sun. Up there, in the starry sky, the morning star wept. For her loneliness. For her family that wasn't there. For her heart, which thundered inside of her just like the rain that fell down on Earth. That night, Wanda prayed.
Her dad didn't talk to her much anymore. Until that moment, she hadn't tried to reach out either. There were no hard feelings between them—'Tis the right thing to do, my daughter— but after years of isolation, they grew apart. Or maybe, she just drifted away from him. A lost star in the endless void of the universe. How fitting.
Still, she prayed. A desperate plea from a chilling heart.
"Father-" Her fiery red hair fell like a curtain around her face. Shoulders heaving with each sob. "Please. Please, leave me alone no more, for I cannot bear it any longer. You said I would shine and bring light to this world. What world, Father?" Between sobs, Wanda screamed at the sky above. Each tear sizzled as they touched her skin. "How can I shine so brightly if there's no one to see me, dad? N-no one to share my light with?" Wanda, the morning star. Lost star. Dimming star.
Twilight in the sky.
From above, her creator observed the scene regretfully. How much He ached to be with her. To hold his daughter again. In an attempt to right what was wrong—Listen to my prayers, Father!— He waved his hand in a difficult motion, eyes swimming in tears that had yet to fall. As you wish, darling one.
"Let there be the Moon."
—
Bleary-eyed, the Moon rises.
What is she doing up there in the sky? It's quiet but eerily so. No star is close enough for her to speak with, only capable of seeing their light from afar. Glancing down, she notices her hands. They are pretty hands. Long fingers stained purple—why purple?— and pale skin. Agatha can almost see the little blood vessels underneath.
It is then that she notices her surroundings. The night is a lilac sky with drops of light in it, planets a million miles away and stars shining so brightly her eyes sting. Agatha herself is glowing. Or rather, reflecting the glow. There is a woman on the horizon. It's too far for Agatha to see what she looks like, but even from far away, she can see how much she shines. A beacon in the dark. Warmth sweeps through her in gentle waves. It comes from the woman too.
In a bout of courage, the Moon waves at her. She has no idea if it will work, given how bright is the space between them. She tries. There's something magnetic in this woman as if she was the Sun and Agatha, the satellite stuck in its orbit. But isn't that exactly what they are? And suddenly, as if heaven itself had illuminated her mind, she realizes that she is the Moon.
Agatha, Goddess of the night and the dark.
Lost in her thoughts, she doesn't notice the Sun wiping away her tears, nor does she hear the surprised gasp the other woman erupts. Father listened!
"Hello?" Wanda calls out, confusion present in her tone. Dark hair flails wildly as Agatha focuses her gaze on her. She is so beautiful, the redhead thinks as she watches her from afar. Raven black mane of lustrous hair gently falling down on lean shoulders; pale, almost silver skin catching the light coming from Wanda in a soft glow. A reflection. Not quite her mirror but her opposite. This is the Moon in all her glory.
“You there!” She has to shout if she wants the other to hear it. “I’m the Sun. Or Wanda, if you prefer.” The star feels ridiculous shouting at someone who’s so far away, almost unreachable in the night sky. “What is your name?” A hopeful smile lights up her face by the time she finishes.
“I’m Agatha, dear.” The Moon smiles back. “Charmed to make your acquaintance. Now, is there any way we can meet up without all this screaming?” As if to make a point, Agatha puts a hand around her own throat. “Give a break to these vocal cords, ya know?” If she squinted her eyes just a bit, Wanda would see a teasing smile gracing the woman’s lips. However, having heard what she’d said, the Sun laughed merrily.
Thank you, Dad.
They talked the night away. What was once a sorrowful evening quickly became a cheerful night. However, when dawn starts to break, Wanda notices the Moon beginning to fade away. She tries to shine brighter, stronger in her light, desperation clutching her heart at the prospect of being alone again.
“Agatha,” The Sun is set ablaze. “Will I see you again?” The Moon is almost gone now. Giving up her place in the sky for the sunlight to shine. It would be poetic if it weren’t for the pain in her chest. How come the Moon missed her already?
“Darling, you’re the center of the universe.” Her voice is but a gentle whisper in the forenoon. Despite the distance, Wanda can hear it as if it had been whispered right by her ear. “Wherever you go, I follow.” And with sad blue eyes and a wistful smile, the moon Goddess disappears in the aurora.
—
173 days had passed since their first and only conversation. For some reason, on each night they shared, it became harder and harder for them to hear one another. And each time the Sun had to see her friend disappear in the sky, she took a little piece of her heart with her. She knew she was being dramatic. And if Agatha were here she would probably make fun of her too. Now, did she care? No, she didn't.
Wanda yearns for the Moon. Craves her soothing voice and cheeky remarks. Teasing smiles and soft eyes. The Sun felt seen under her gaze. After billions of years with only herself as company, the sun Goddess can't help but feel attached to her. Even though moths still didn't exist and she was the actual flame, Wanda was attracted to the moonlight just the same.
A little voice, however, just hidden in the confines of her mind, tells her that there was a purpose to this. This distance that they always try to close but never do. Yearning for someone she could never hold in her arms. Maybe this is just another way for Father to punish me again, Wanda thinks bitterly. She'd never been so wrong before. This was no punishment.
It was salvation.
Brooding up in the sky, the Sun hadn't noticed when night started to fall. Nor had she noticed when—instead of the Earth blocking her vision of the Moon—the object of her thoughts suddenly appeared right in front of her.
It's during a solar eclipse when they meet for the first time.
"Agatha? Is it really you?" Jumping to her feet from where she sat, Wanda feels her heart skip a beat. Nothing could compare to the Moon up close.
"It is. Come here so I can see you, darling!" A delighted smile curls on dark red lips. The goddess reaches up to softly cradle Wanda's face, a thumb brushing the warm skin of her cheek. "You're really here…"
The redhead leans into the touch. "I am. You have no idea how much I wanted to see you, Agatha. To talk to you eye to eye." The black-haired woman revels in the way green orbs gleam under her light. Their light. "To touch you." Hands to her hips pulls her closer. The Moon buries herself in those arms. It feels like being hugged by the Sun but literally this time. She giggles at her own silliness. A husky voice laughs along.
"Why are you laughing?" Wanda whispers in the crook of her neck. Agatha gives a small intake of breath, and her laughing subsides.
"I just realized the Sun is hugging me. A strange metaphor, don't you think?"
"Perhaps. Do you want me to-"
"No!" Agatha says, startling them both. She speaks quieter, "No. S-sorry, I'm just too silly for my own good. Comes with loneliness, I guess." She gives a bit of a laugh but her gaze finds the ground. A finger under her chin lifts it up.
"Hey," A soft smile spreads across the Sun's face. "It's okay. Maybe we could be silly together?" And as if to emphasize her point, she makes a silly face. Agatha can't help the guffaw that comes out. They laugh together again.
Hand in hand, they walk through the night sky. Talking about everything and nothing, they discover little things about each other, such as Agatha's liking for the sea and her influence on the tides, or Wanda's love for early mornings and summer evenings. Both women feel at home with each other, their past sorrows all but forgotten memories in their minds. Day and night. Light and darkness.
Total eclipse of the Sun.
—
It didn't take long for them to realize that they only had time to meet in person during eclipses. Solar ones, in fact. As such, whenever they got the chance, the two goddesses would always try to get the best out of the few hours they had together. Today is no different.
It was also in each other's company that they discovered the ability to incarnate themselves. In their human forms—Dad needs to create them soon—they would head down to their shared planet and take walks on the small patches of land they could find.
They're laying side by side on the ground. "Dear gods, Wanda, whatever those poor things have done to you? It's just phytoplankton," Between giggles, Agatha tries not to let a full laugh come out as she watches Wanda turn and glare at her, the redhead's own lips twitching as if she too were having a hard time not laughing. "Why do you despise them so?" Agatha is actually curious about that.
"They're just so bland! Father said that He would create mankind when I was little but apparently He forgot." She says grumpily but with a ghost of a smile on her lips. "Photosynthesis is the only thing they do all day. Not to mention under my account too!" Wanda puts on a serious face for a few moments, only for it to fall away as the twinkling laughter of her Moon hits her ears. It occurs to her, like a flash of lightning, how beautiful Agatha looks under the penumbra.
Their human forms came with the inability to display their god-like features, which was why Wanda didn't shine as the actual sun and Agatha didn't reflect her rays.
She is glad for it, really. Mortality looks heavenly on her Moon.
"You're a goofball!"
"Am not!"
"Yes, you are!" Agatha turns fully on her side, arms under her head and tenderness coloring her ocean eyes. Her gaze trails over the woman beside her. Without thinking, her hand finds Wanda's. Their laughter ceases to give space to a companionable silence. There's no need for words right now.
Despite knowing each other for months now—It feels like I've known her for years, they both think—it's at this very moment the goddesses realize how important and vital the other's presence is in their lives. Wanda found a friend in Agatha, something she had longed for as long as she could remember. Solace and understanding the foundation of their budding relationship. Yet, a flame started inside of her chest. It was small at first, barely there. A candle in the dark. Now?
Fire overtook her entire being.
The Sun burns for the Moon's touch and her smile; her azure eyes and sharp tongue, quick wit and soft words-
Wanda, the sun Goddess. The only morning star. The lost star. Once dimming but never giving out. Enters the Moon and she falls. A falling star in the dark night sky. And woe is Wanda, for she hopes Agatha catches her. Never to fade away. Never to let go.
"Wanda?" The hand Agatha holds trembles slightly. "Is everything okay?"
"Everything is fine, I'm just- it's nothing, really." There are tears in her eyes but she wills them not to fall. She is my only friend, I can't lose her for this-
"Honey, don't do this. I know there's something upsetting you. I won't force you to talk to me but know that I'm here, Wanda. I'm not going anywhere." She pulls her hand away to run her fingers through soft auburn hair. The Sun feels fire spread within.
"Promise we can still be friends?" Never in her life had she felt so insecure. But she had to know.
"Darling, how could I not be your friend? You're my sun, superstar. But yes, I promise you." Agatha tried to joke around to see if she could bring a smile to the woman's face. It is to no avail.
Wanda rests a warm hand on her cheek. Caresses the skin just beneath her eyes, brushes her nose. Ghosts over lips. With each touch, Agatha's heart plummeted in her chest. A crescent moon, thundering core.
"I've always wanted to be a star. When the Gods created the universe, I was there. I've seen things you can't even imagine. Whole galaxies colliding with each other, the death of a million stars." She closes her eyes briefly, and her voice cracks as she continues. "And when I became one, I felt completely happy. Excited even. I was to shine upon a whole world, the entire solar system. And yet… I was lonely. I was alone for so long, Agatha. But then- Then you came along. I prayed for someone, anyone to come and put me out of my misery.
My light was going out but you brought it back. You are my light, Agatha. You're the reason I still burn and will continue to burn until the end of time itself, if it means you're by my side." By the time she finishes, tears have long started falling. And by the time they fall, the Moon has already pulled the Sun into her embrace.
Black nails into her scalp. Murmured words of comfort in her ear.
The Sun sets and lays in her chest.
"Remember that thing I said on the day we met?" She waits for Wanda to nod, her mane of red hair tickling Agatha's nose. "Wherever you go, I follow. That's the truth, Wanda. Not only am I incapable of getting away from you, I also don't want to. And do you know why?" Green eyes red with crying look up at her. "Because I can't bear the thought of not being with you. The very prospect of not seeing you shine so brightly in the sky saddens me so much that-" Her voice chokes. "That sometimes I can't breathe. But when morning comes and you're up there in the sky being your sunny self," They both laugh tearfully. "I feel alive. You make me feel alive, Wanda."
It doesn't really matter who leans in first.
Day and night find each other's lips in a searing kiss. Wanda might have witnessed many things in her long life, but never had she seen the collision of a satellite and its star. What a spectacle it was. Lucky her for having the pleasure to participate in it.
They are a mess of limbs curling into one another. Not once separating from their kiss, Wanda manages to straddle Agatha with dexterity, her hands pining those of the woman to the hard surface. Tongue against tongue in an elegant and passionate dance. Total eclipse of the Sun, full Moon its only spectator.
Then, coming from the heavens above, a deep rumble sounded.
"No." A whispered command. Father had come back.
And the falling star and her crescent moon were no more.
—
Wanda opens her eyes with a silent gasp.
Sunlight hits her face lazily as if it had just woken up as well. Agatha sleeps by her side. Looking out, she sees the snowy mountain tops and the woods that surrounded their cabin being grazed by the morning sun.
Her girlfriend murmurs something in her sleep the younger witch can't quite comprehend. Trying to calm her rabbit-heart, Wanda pulls her closer and breathes into her hair. Feels her own breathing slow down. It was just a dream, it was just dream-
"Well, good morning, sunshine." Violet eyes hazy with sleep slowly blink at her. A soft smile on red lips. "What's with the long face?" Agatha taps her nose. The warm breeze coming from outside suddenly feels too hot.
Too much.
"Nothing, I- I just had the strangest dream…"
Up in the sky, the Sun wept.

okay!!!! so!!! i guess it’s kind of a prompt, but like steve goes to an art college thing. and he’s suuuper talented, one of the best in his class. and the prof. says that they have a guest to come in for some modelling. and steve is super excite ‘cause he loves doing projects like this. and then the model comes in, covered in a bathrobe, it’s billy. he goes to sit on the stool at the front. drops the robe, he’s completely nude. looks steve directly in the eye and winks! just an idea i had! -🎨
Dear anon, !!!!!!! This took SO LONG, but then again I was flagged and unavailable for like two weeks, and I did not write at all in that time, but as I woke up today to find myself back to normal, I quickly finished what was left, and now 11 pages long, I will post some of it here, then link the rest on my AO3!
My mind went off on this, and I hope it’s as good as I believe, especially what with all the teasing I’ve been doing!
Now, enjoy~
-
An arts scholarship is not something everyone can brag about, well, almost everyone, or so Steve thought when he got approved for one after his high school teacher encouraged him to apply.
He’s not dumb, or unintelligent, as most people around him will say - the words on the pages just don’t connect right, as if he can’t see what any other person might perceive, and it is reflected on his grades. Math is… fine, the only issue there is a general unwillingness to learn, because rather than doing algebra and figuring out trigonometry, Steve’s talents lie in the stroke of a brush, in the graphite of a pencil, in the black of charcoal.
His mother always encouraged him with a loving hand and a wondrous appreciation for every single little drawing Steve came up with as a child, fueling this intense fire inside of him that only felt relief against paper or canvas. She showered him in materials; endless chalk, a rainbow of watercolors, acrylics, oil pastels, pencils in all shapes and hues, stacks of papers, piles of canvas, even let him paint the walls of his bedroom as far as he could reach.
His father… simply stood and scowled in the doorway. He’s old fashioned, wanted an heir to the Harrington Construction Empire his own father built, not some… artistic little fairy. Steve stopped counting how many of his parents' fights were about him years ago.
And now he’s here, in California, attending college of all things, surrounded by students who, just like him, have devoted their entire lives to the arts. He feels less special, less talented, amongst his peers, where it seems that a third of them have arrived on scholarships, too.
But his teacher, Mr Reynolds, an old man with a long goatee and suspenders, always assures Steve that he is, without a doubt, the star of the class. That he will go far in his life, become world renowned, famous for his works, that in the future art classes will teach about his techniques and colors and soul.
Steve likes to believe it; spends his spare time thinking about what painting of his would be displayed in museums, what the critics will say, what he will wear to the reveal party, what his speech will sound like.
All those thoughts course through his overactive mind whenever he looks at a blank surface, just waiting, begging to be filled with his inspired soul. Perhaps he’s a bit too immodest and vain and arrogant, but he doesn’t really put up a fight against those ideals; never bothered trying to be humble about what is so obvious to any eye, and when every teacher has never offered up anything besides praise, is he to believe they’re all liars?
He looks around at his classmates as they set up in the arranged circle surrounding a single stool in the middle. They all smile at him, greetings exchanged as always, the friendliness of people who you’ve had a few beers with, attended some parties and gatherings together, but never really gotten to know past the surface.
Steve’s just not as social as he used to be, and moving halfway across the country didn’t really help that either. Something changed in him during the last year of high school, but honestly he can’t complain. He goes whenever invited, otherwise he keeps to himself, focuses on his studies, does his homework, a scholarship can only get you so far, and if his grades dip too low, it’s bye bye future.
“All on time for once! Impressive!” Reynolds says with a cheery tone, clasping his hands together with a wide smile as he moves to the center of the classroom. “For today’s live figure drawing practice, we’ll continue working with models and volunteers from all parts of life, and today I’ve managed to convince a hard working, blue collar of a man! William Hargrove, you may take the stage!”
Everyone turns to the stained room divider over in a solitude corner, the usual spot where their models change in and out of clothes and robes, and from behind steps a man dressed in a dark gray bathrobe, adorned with the most gorgeous crown of golden curls, his stubble is scruffy with a more accentuated mustache, and his eyes are of the clearest blue waters Steve has ever seen before.
His breathing pauses for just a moment as he stares at the broad shouldered stranger, caught in a trance - a willing subject to be ensnared by this man’s confidence, walking like he owns the room. Steve doesn’t even realise that he’s staring till he’s met with those heavenly eyes.
Who then winks at him, grin mischievous and aware of what thoughts surge forth in his presence.
Steve’s heart beats like a drum, ramming against his ribs, a heated flush rushing up to tint his ears red, spilling into his cheeks. He can’t help but whip his head back towards his easel with a stare that could burn a hole in the pages before him, restraining himself from gawking further, trying to calm down some.
It’s not that he hasn’t paid attention to other guys in the past, it’s just that he hasn’t cared for that kind of stuff before. Even when he was dating Nancy back in high school he didn’t care enough. But now? This guy? This man?
Nothing more than one simple, flirty look, and Steve’s interest tiptoes over the line of professional into personal, dipping in, testing the waters there.
And when he reaches the middle of the circle, everyone here far too interested in seeing what he’s hiding beneath the robe, he slowly slips it off, clearly revelling in all the attention if the smile he carries is any indication.
Unfortunately, much to Steve’s inconvenience, this William Hargrove is ripped. Jaw strong like a cliffside, biceps akin to perfectly carved marble, formidable pecs covered in chest hair lush like a forest that spreads down abs like rolling hills, Steve’s eyes travels smooth like a stream across the landscape of William’s body, down to his-
He refocuses on the easel in front of him, invitingly barren and pleading for him to ruin the stillness with his own inappropriate curiosity.
“Thank you once again for agreeing to this, Mister Hargrove. You may use this stool here to pose with, or without, it is entirely up to whatever you’re most comfortable with,” Reynolds explains, unhooking a thumb from where he fiddles with his suspenders to accept the robe that William has removed.
“Yes sir,” sounds the response, his voice husky and charming, throaty from years of use.
It tugs further at Steve’s intrigue, oh to hear him laugh, read a book aloud, sing along to whatever reckless music he listens to, probably rock or something abrasive. Steve’s wild imagination goes through it all in the matter of seconds, just to be pulled back when his teacher speaks again,
“We’ll be taking things a bit slow today, six poses with 10 minutes each, let you all get a good feel for Mr Hargrove’s body, really focus and pay attention to how the shadows fall.”
Steve’s convinced the way he swallows hard must be audible, the lump in his throat making a loud splash in the pool of boiling nerves gathered in his stomach, breaking surface tension and stirring up thoughts he hasn’t really bothered with for months, if not a year by now.
Yet here’s this stranger with such undeniable magnetism, taking a seat, naked on a stool, aiming straight at Steve, staring at Steve, smirking at Steve.
Who nervously rakes fingers through his hair, pushing it back and away as to more clearly see his model, noticing how the muscles flex and tense as Hargrove decides on his first pose. The human body is phenomenal to look at, nothing in the world deserves grander appreciation than it, and it’s easy for Steve to convince himself that that’s what this is, an accentuated form of gratitude for the very same shape that Michelangelo used for his David.
Finally William gets settled, on the edge of his seat, one foot on the ground, the other up on the bar between the legs of the stool, elbow raised and bent to bring a hand behind his head, the other relaxed on his thigh. Exposed and raw and muscular and brilliant.
Steve could truly go on and on and on about this Adonis posed all nude before him, face turned slightly to the side, but it is unquestionably clear that the rest of him is aimed directly at where Steve sits, and he doesn’t realise he’s staring again till Reynolds says,
“Ten minutes, everyone! You may begin!”

Word count: 3.8K
Pairing: Sam X Reader AU
Warnings: Fluff
Series Summary: Y/N Y/L/N is eager and honestly, still in awe that she managed to get herself an acceptance from Stanford Law School. On the face of it, her life seems as put together, mysterious and independent as one might hope for. On the insides, she carries the burden of past that haunts her till date. Seemingly, she’d left it all behind; that is until she sets foot in the class of the Law School’s youngest, most promising professor.
Warnings: None for this chapter
A/N: I am so excited to share this story. I am really loving it <3 This is also written for @sdavid09 ‘s Tale Teller’s 2020 Bingo Challenge.
Beta: My amazing girls @deanssweetheart23 and @anathewierdo Thank you!! I love you both <3

Finally the last of the boxes had been pushed up the five stories of stairs and into your living room. The guy from the movers quickly accepted the payment and disappeared before you could even utter “thanks.” You didn’t blame him. Anyone would be over eager to leave after hauling boxes up the stairs given that the lift randomly stopped working.
You were just relieved that none of his men got stuck inside. That would have been awful. He complained about the sort of shitshows the rental buildings in the locality were, but all things considered, he had been pretty nice about the untimely disaster.
You closed the door behind and slid to the floor, glad that you didn’t have to smile for strangers anymore.
The lift might have been a shitshow, but the flat you were renting was really nice. It had two bedrooms, a living room and a small kitchenette. The flat had only one bathroom, but the grand balcony on the other side of the living room all but made up for it. You got off the floor and made your way towards the balcony. It overlooked a small meadow of sorts, and the entry wall beyond it was high and covered with thick vines. Right in the middle, was a small fountain in the shape of a mermaid, carved out of what must have been once pristine white marble. The mermaid had a mysterious look on her face, like she knew your secret, and was contemplating if it would fetch a good gossip. In her hand, she held a beautifully carved flask, from which the water fell into the basin below.
It was like being in your own space, enclosed in this beautiful Caribbean meadow. That was until a voice called your attention.
“Hey!”
You looked sideways to find an Asian guy who couldn’t have been more than 20 waving at buy. You waved back awkwardly.
“So, I see you’ve met judgy Judy!”
“Who?”
He tilted his head towards the mermaid. “That’s judgy Judy.” he said, smiling. “If you happen to walk past her after 12 in the night, you are bestowed upon the judgiest of looks. And if you’re drunk…” he let out his breath in whoosh.
You laughed, then were surprised at the sound of it. You didn’t laugh this easily.
“My name’s Kevin,” the boy said. “Kevin Tran. Aren’t you the new girl renting 502? Meg?”
You shook your head. “I’m Y/N, actually. Meg won’t be here until Wednesday.”
You knew nothing about your roommate except that she loved her privacy. That was her only demand in the advert. That she was looking for someone who knew of basic hygiene and didn’t poke their nose in her business. You couldn’t argue with that.
He smiled, “So what brings you here, Y/N?”
Before you could answer, Kevin put out his hands excitedly. “Wait! let me guess. You’re a pastry chef, looking to start your own little bakery in this quaint little town.”
You rolled your eyes. That was about as far as he could get from why you were here.
He caught on. “No… no… you’re an artist? Looking for inspiration?”
You pursed your lips, trying not to smile. “I’m actually starting the year at the Law school.”
Kevin whistled. “Law school, huh?” Then added, “Hey, what do I know? I’m just an engineer!”
You sized him up. He looked too young to be a professional.
He raised his hands up, “I know, I know what you’re thinking,” he said and you instantly felt guilty about judging anyone by their looks. Judgy Judy would be proud.
“You’re thinking why would I live out of the city,” he said and you breathed a sigh of relief. “It’s ‘cause San Francisco is boring. Besides, I get to work from home a lot, and it’s an hours drive anyway.”
“Seems fair,” you said. He didn’t ask you why you weren’t staying in the official campus dorms. Maybe he had already done the mental math and figured out that the Law building was less than a ten minute walk from here. Besides, most of Stanford was a student town anyway. This building was closer to the college than even the Faculty residence.
“Hey, Y/N,” Kevin said genially, “Why don’t you join us for dinner? It’s just me and my roommate Jack. We can order some pizza and pop some beers. It’ll be cool. That way you don’t have to worry about cooking in the middle of all that unpacking.”
It was starting to get chilly outside, and you wrapped your arms around yourself, “I’m not much a drinker.”
“That’s fine,” he said, unfazed. “We have soda, if you want.”
You hesitated, “Thanks, Kevin, really. Maybe some other time.”
You waved at his somewhat confused face and stepped inside, closing the glass doors of the balcony behind you.
If Kevin thought you were weird, he’d get used to it like everyone in your life. He would get used to not talking, stealing glances and the fact that you weren’t exactly the sort of person people wanted around in fun times. He’d learn to ignore you like everyone else.
Most of the weekend was spent trying to put your room together. There really wasn’t much to your belongings except books and some clothes, which you arranged as neatly as you could. If the blaring music on your speakers disturbed Kevin and his roommate, neither of them complained.
On Monday, you attended orientation lectures by a few alumni and the Dean. It all seemed like a dream to you. On Tuesday, they had a pre-law show you around in groups, the grand campus that was Stanford University. By the end, you were biased about the Law building being the best, maybe because you had dreamt of being here day and night for as long as you could remember. The Law school wasn’t a grand facade. It was functional and built in a pale beige sandstone which had weathered wonderfully over the years. The corridors were breezy and opened on to landscaped spill out spaces … and the building itself seemed to breathe through the tactfully placed fenestrations.
The pre-law showing your group around the campus talked and talked and talked, while you followed her dumbfounded at the expanse of it all. One day, you’d get used to this, you knew that… but that day was nowhere near close. In fact, it had barely even registered that you had done it! That you had actually been accepted into Stanford and that you were going to be a lawyer!
Stanford had twenty libraries. Twenty. The place that you absolutely fell in love with was the Cecil H. Green library. The high, vaulted ceiling made you feel like you had stepped right into the Victorian era. The rows and rows of shelves absolutely boggled your mind. You could live here and it still wouldn’t be enough.
You touched the richly colored mahogany table in the library and unwillingly, like it was the most inevitable thing in the world, you thought of him. The look in his eyes when he talked about this very place. “Y/N,” he’d say “You’re gonna fall in love with the smell of those books!”
You immediately yanked your hand from the table, as if a current had passed through your body. The girl next to you, looked over. “Everything alright?” she asked kindly.
You nodded and moved away from the piece of furniture. You couldn’t think about him now, not here. So, you took a couple of deep breaths and closed your eyes, focussing on the things around you, the long shelves, the smooth tables. And it eased some, you could feel your chest constrict a little.
Meanwhile, the guide talked on.
“Water?” The girl next to you offered as you all stepped out of the library. You needed it, but that meant talking to her, and you weren’t sure you were up for that.
“C’mon, take it,” she insisted, “You look like you’ve seen a ghost.”
You took the bottle and splashed some water on your face, then took two gulps, feeling better immediately. The water tasted funny, but in a refreshing way.
You looked at what was inside.
The girl laughed. “It’s cucumber water,” she said. “I figured we’d be doing a lot of walking today and this is a saviour.”
“Thanks,” you said, actually looking at her properly. She had a slim build, with dark brown hair and eyes. Despite knowing that they would be walking a lot, she was dressed in a black pencil skirt and a flowy baby blue blouse, with matching heels. She was carrying all that effortlessly without breaking a sweat, while you were wearing your most worn pair of comfortable jeans, a sweater and sneakers. You did notice that she looked really pretty and when she smiled, it reached her eyes.
“Better?” She asked
“Much. Thank you.”
She put her hand forward. “I’m Madison. Madison Maxwell.”
“Y/N Y/L/N.” You shook her hand.
The others had already gone ahead while she had waited for you to catch your breath and drink water. You started walking together.
“So, excited for the classes to begin?” She asked peppily and you nodded.
You figured that Madison was the sort to fill every silence with words. After a while, she was going to be really disappointed in you for your lack of responses or initiating a conversation.
As you walked, Madison told you everything that she could about herself in the span of the couple minutes it took you to reach the rest of the group. She was born and brought up in Pasadena, to a lawyer dad and a socialite mom. “I feel like my mom was born as a socialite! Her first words were probably, ‘well, hullo, Dahling!”
You laughed, and encouraged by your reaction she continued. She was a pre-grad in sociology from USC, where she was voted the most likely to charm people with her smile (seemed fair). She had two older brothers both lawyers in their Dad’s bigass firm, and they lived in this huge house overlooking a hugeass swimming pool. Her words, not yours.
The fact she was rich was pretty much in your face, from the gucci bottle filled with cucumber water to the Prada shoes, but it wasn’t because she was pushing it… she was just used to it.
“What about you?” She asked as you reached the group. “Where are you from?”
“Kansas,” you said.
“And?” She coaxed good naturedly.
“And I did my pre-law from University in Texas.”
“That’s nice. What about your parents?”
You looked down. “They died in a car crash when I was little.”
“Oh no!” Madison gasped. She looked like she was about to tear up.
“It’s okay,” you said quickly, offering her a smile. “I’ve made my peace with it.” It was true. You’d had twenty odd years to adjust to it. It was a way of life now.
Madison still gave you an apologetic smile, but thankfully, for the rest of the tour she didn’t talk much. It wasn’t that Madison wasn’t charming, but everyone charming usually expected the same from you… and you weren’t. Why pitch her up for disappointment?
“So, see you tomorrow, Y/N?” She asked, tentatively.
Poor girl, you thought. “See you,” you said. “It was nice meeting you, Madison.”
“Likewise,” she said brightly.
You watched her walk over to another group of girls, all dressed fancily, who squealed when they saw Madison. You shook your head, smiling to yourself that Madison had found some kindred spirits.
It didn’t explain why she had been so nice to you all day though. If she already had friends, she didn’t have to care about you, right?
It took you a while to figure out which was your exit. Roaming around in the campus as it was dark, was anxiety inducing. Yet, a voice in the back of your head kept telling you how the Oval was at the centre of the campus, and the Law building was just to the south east. You didn’t want to hear the voice, hell you didn’t even want to think about whom the voice belonged to, but slowly and surely it guided you back to the gate closest to your flat. Once you reached it, you made a run for it, not stopping till you were inside the tall building gate and into the meadow. You ran into Kevin.
“Y/N!” He said, “I didn’t see you there.” Next to him was another boy, dirty blonde hair and a smiling face. “This is Jack. Remember, I told you about him?”
Jack took one look at you and concern rippled across his face, “Hey, you okay?”
“Yeah, yeah, just tired,” you whispered.
Before any of them could say another word, you dashed up the stairs.
“The lift is working again!” Kevin called after you, but you bolted into your room without halting. Once you were inside, you locked the door behind and you rolled into a ball on your unmade bed, finally letting the tears make their way.
You knew this was coming, you knew it the moment you set foot in this town that it would remind you of him… the way he smiled, the way he ran his hand through his hair when he was nervous… the way you loved him. Over the years you had trained yourself to snap out of it whenever your thoughts even inched towards him. You could shut it off and just stop thinking. It had taken years and years of practice, but finally you could lock him in the darkest part of your mind and not look at it. Not feel anything for him. In return, you barely felt anything at all. About anything, about anyone.
In the long run, you preferred that bargain, though. The numbness.
And after spending so much time in it, the numbness felt homely. It cushioned you against the pain and the memories. So what if it cushioned you against feeling anything at all, too? At least this way you were functional. You could get through the day and be productive. Besides, who did you have to live for except yourself, anyway? So it was okay to just survive. To just feel enough for you to feel human. At one point even that had felt like an impossible feat.
You tried not to remember the days and nights wishing for the endless pain to end, wishing to just give up on everything, on life. At least now you didn’t feel that way. You had re-learned to aspire, to work hard. You didn’t feel hopeful anymore, but you had a goal set in mind and you were willing to work as hard as you could to fulfill it.
Most of the time, you managed to block out all unwanted noise in your head and outside, and just concentrate on surviving. It will have to suffice till one day you could actually start living.
But once in a while the box cracked, like today, and all the memories came spinning out. In the library, somehow Madison’s prattling had kept you from spiralling. Now, there was no one to help. The thoughts simply overwhelmed you and you shut your ears, rolling into a smaller ball, as flashes of light from that night flared behind your closed eyes, the rain pouring down on you and all the blood. The thing you remembered most clearly was the cold. The skin-numbing, bone chilling cold as the water soaked through you.
You woke up to the blaring alarm. It was 7:15 in the morning.
“Shit!”
You jumped out of bed and then immediately slipped, landing on the floor with the thud. You cursed again as you got to your feet and rushed into the bathroom. Not only had you overslept, but last night you hadn’t even gone through your schedule of classes and lectures. The plan had been to wake up at 6, and go through the schedule once more, which you should have had studied last night, wear the perfect first day clothes that you should have picked out last night, and reach early to the classroom which you should have already figured out before 8 in the morning.
At 8 in the morning, however, you were still trying to shimmy yourself into the only formal skirt you owned. You quickly threw on the first decent shirt that you could find and tied your hair in a ponytail, then made your way out of the apartment without breakfast. Your bag was threatening to spill out the laptop and notebook you carried as you all but ran across the street to get to the campus.
By some extreme luck, you remembered the building perfectly. With a quick look through the schedule and the help of a very offended senior, you finally made your way to the class, completely out of breath by 8:20. Even though your hair was falling out of the ponytail, you were covered in sweat and your shoes were permanently damaged, you were miraculously ten minutes early.
The classroom was huge and circular. It was stepped upwards, with desks curving around to focus downwards on the podium at centre, right underneath the big projecting screen mounted on the opposite wall. If you had entered the normal way, you would have probably entered through one of the two doors at the top of the class, but with your luck, you had obviously entered through the one door at the bottom, presumably which the faculty used. This way you had to climb up all the way to an empty spot with over a hundred people staring down at you in your hassled state.
“Smooth,” a blonde guy from the third row muttered as you began climbing.
“Y/N! Hey, Y/N,” a voice called. “Over here!”
You saw Madison waving at you from the corner seat on one of the top rows. A few people were looking at where the commotion was coming from. To avoid more of it, you hurried towards her.
“Saved you a seat!” she said, moving her books from the seat next to her, to make space.
“Thank you,” you said gratefully. The three girls seated on the other side of her, gave you a curious look. The sort that is given to old cheese, wondering if it has gone stale.
“Girls,” Madison said, “This is Y/N. Y/N, these are Lacey, Meredith and Rebecca.” In your harrowed state, you only remembered that the brunette with long hair was Lacey.
“Aren’t you excited?” Madison asked, smelling like she had stepped straight out of a beautiful orchard, while you were sweating bullets.
“Mhmm,” you said. Madison went on to talk about how excited she was for this particular lecture, while you hurriedly set out your laptop, and readied your papers.
“He’s just so dreamy and hot,” Madison gushed and the other girls nodded in agreement. “I can’t believe we have him for the first lecture.”
“How are we supposed to concentrate?” One of the girls wailed.
Like that was really a problem.
“Civil Procedure,” you read from the time table, quickly going through the syllabus, not even looking at the professor’s name the girls were raving about. In your experience, the content mattered, not who was teaching it.
There was a sudden ruffling, and everyone quieted at once.
“Sorry, I’m a little late,” an apologetic voice said.
It was 8:32, you thought absentmindedly, as you looked up from the papers, that was hardly late. That voice felt like long forgotten music.
The professor was facing the board, printing “Civil Procedure.”
When he turned, the floor dropped from under your feet.
He wore a light grey suit, with a striped tie and a white button up shirt, and stood tall against the black board. His soft brown hair was long and silky, curling slightly at his collar, and even though from this far you couldn’t see the colour, his hazel eyes were warm and slightly abashed.
“My name’s Sam Winchester,” he said, the words each felt like a separate stab to your gut. “I'll be taking the Civil Procedure Module for this semester and the next. And, I’m usually never late… especially in the courtroom.”
Some laughter ran around the room. He gave it a minute acknowledging it with a smile, then opened his laptop, and a tech hurried over to set it up.
“While Paul here is helping me with the wires, let me introduce myself more fully,” he said, leaning against the table. “I did my pre-law from right here at Stanford, so I’m still your senior. You all better be respectful.” More laughter rang around. “Then, I went to Yale for law school. I’ve practiced in New York for two years before moving to California, and practicing in LA for a few more. I currently work as the Senior Associate at Acton Griswold in San Francisco. You guys heard of it?”
“Is he kidding?” Lacey whispered. “Who hasn’t heard of Acton Griswold?”
“You’re even paying attention to what he’s saying?,” said the girl next to Lacey. “I can’t get over the way he looks. What is he? 30? Hot damn!”
“I have to impress him,” Madison muttered, though her voice had become softer. “I need that internship at Acton Griswold.”
On the podium Paul was done setting up the laptop, and Sam walked over to it opening the presentation. He pulled out frameless glasses from the box and slid them up his long pointed nose.
“Damn!” Lacey said again.
Your vision was tunneling in, and the room was spinning around you. Nothing made sense anymore. Not where you were, not what you were doing. Nothing mattered except the fact that he was standing there, right in front of you.
You could hear the rustling of papers, and the tap-tap of fingers hitting keys. while you just sat there numbly, not knowing what to do, not caring what was happening, or how long it had been.
“Y/N? Y/N?” Madison was calling your name. “Are you okay? You look really clammy.”
Maybe she had been calling you for a while because a few people ahead of you turned to look, visibly annoyed. and it was in slow motion, almost reluctantly, as if to seek the source of disturbance that Sam’s eyes found you.
A second passed and you could see them widen, then freeze in absolute shock. Unadulterated and profound shock.
“I’m sorry, I need to go,” You muttered, then grabbed your laptop and your bag and rushed out of the door at the top, without caring about the papers you had spilt… and bolted across the corridor, without a sense of direction till you found yourself in a toilet cubicle, locked and in hysterics.
This couldn’t be happening. Not now. Not ever.
You had closed that chapter of your life, fled as far away as you could and yet, and yet he was right here. Sam was so close to you, how had your heart not known?
