What Remains of the Pain
In which I grant everybody a soft reprieve from the cold hard world.
Sleep is elusive and uneven. Tav doesn't know how much rest they got but while they wake calmed they are only a little refreshed. Their muscles hum subdued in the memory of overuse but without pain. Haarlep's hand is running gently over their back in a distracted way.
Tav blinks and moves a little to announce they are awake. "You could just have rolled me off," they mumble.
"Of course."
"Thank you." Tav sighs and buries their face against the red skin for a moment. "What cost?"
"Oh, don't you worry about that. I will find a way to make you pay." The incubus pats their head.
"That's what I fear." Tav props themself up. Their muscles protest quietly and are ignored. They feel beat and in dire need of a bath. Food. Raphael. "How long did I sleep?"
"Two, maybe three hours only," the incubus replies.
Tav sits up and eyes the pool. It's not perfect for getting clean. But they don't want to be alone. And if the worst comes to pass, they want to be with a devil they know. So they pad off and take a quick wash, drinking the healing waters in lieu of something to eat. They are not sure they can keep anything down anyway.
Padding back to the bed, Tav picks up a book. Reading will go badly, but they can keep enough of their thoughts together for a cheap splatter spree.
"Preparing for the worst?" Haarlep chuckles when they see the novel. "Macabre but sensible."
"The world may end any moment. Might as well end it with a bad book and a good friend."
Haarlep snorts. "You may want to reconsider the positions of those adjectives, mouse. I am not your friend."
Tav looks up from the book with a sad smile. "I know, Haarps. But I'm yours. So shut up and deal with it."
"Insufferable." The incubus snatches the book from Tav's hands. "This is so much nonsense. If you pull somebody's fingernails out, they will bleed. There is no pristine pale skin to slash with dull knives. Anyway, it’s more delicious to use a really, really sharp knife and watch the realisation unfold on the victims face before the pain sets in."
"I'll take your word for it."
"Demonstrations can be arranged." Haarlep turns onto their stomach. "Come let's get this poor sod to his deserved end. I think there'll be another skinning. Do you think it’s finally going to be more accurate than the first three?"
Tav is pretty sure it won't be but that's alright. Haarlep educated them thoroughly on more efficient was to skin a person each time, if with efficient you meant painful. They'd take another and'd try to ignore the fact that it could be them.
The incubus isn't half through explaining how a knife isn't even necessary for a good skinning if you approached it more like peeling an egg when a commotion runs through the House of Hope. They perk up, listening for boots on the tiles and try to gauge the numbers of the arrivals. Haarlep puts the book a way and a hand on Tav's shoulder. The human places theirs over it with a smile.
By the time they look back to the entrance, a dark figure approaches with long strides, swathed in dust and ash. Tav's heart settles in relief – they know that gait anywhere. They squeeze Haarlep's hand before they let go, muscles releasing a tension they didn't know they held. Tav melts in a counterpoint to the sharp lines and angular planes making up the form of their returning devil.
Tav is captivated by the hard thin line of his lips that tells more of what transpired than words. They want to lean up, soften it with their own and assure Raphael that things will be alright.
He looks exhausted under the layers of grime and blood, the burning coronas of his black eyes dim. Tav reaches up and their palms turn black and dirty again but this time, they smell even less appealing. It doesn't matter. Raphael is back. The glow of death and murder in his eyes is slowly replaced by exhaustion.
Tav doesn't resist when he scoops them up with one arm. They cling to his tired body desperately, armour cutting into their flesh. It doesn't matter. They cut their cheek open on one of his spikes and it doesn't matter. He is alive. He is back.
In their suite, Raphael drops them. Tav waits for clues but he just stand in the room, staring ahead. He doesn't react to a gentle tug, or a more decisive one. When he allows Tav to tentatively remove one of his heavy gloves, the human knows what to do until the devil's senses go live again.
They manoeuvre the towering figure into the tiled section and draw a hot bath as they slowly peel the devil out of his grimy armour. Raphael winces when Tav reaches for the closures of the cuirass. Eyes dark as night without redeeming coronas settle on Tav.
"Sei still, mein Herz." Tav cups his face between their hands and bends him until the devil looks down into their eyes. "Ich bin hier."
Tav waits until recognition returns the fire into the sunken eyes before they continue. Most of the blood and gore is on the outside of the plates and stripped down, Raphael is acceptably dirty. Still, Tav quickly drains the first water after scrubbing away the worst of the filth.
As they work on the red skin with a sponge and scented soap, Raphael slowly relaxes. He yields his arms and legs to Tav’s ministrations without opening his eyes. A trust tav teases with small kisses now and then.
Tav washes his hair, massaging his scalp and murmuring soft words into his ear. The wings take some work and water drips all over the tiles. It doesn't matter. Tav caresses the leathery skin tip to tip, watching rivulets of warm water running down over the soft texture, taking soap and dirt with it.
When Tav leans back over the devil's shoulder, Raphael breathes slow and deep as the tension drifts from his features ever so slowly. Tav ghosts a kiss over his cheek before taking up their sponging again. Raphael's chest and shoulders get more than their fair share, but Tav considers it alright to indulge themself a little.
They give his hair another wash, running the soft strands through their fingers, half transfixed by the patterns the water paints on them. The horns come last and touching them puts a smile on Tav's face. Water sputters as it tries to run down the uneven surface. Soap sticks to the crevices and allows Tav to take their time, switching between sponge, brush and hands at leisure.
After Tav drains the water, Raphael stays down until they dried off his horns. They apply horn balm, hands smelling of cherries and tallow, humming under their breath with contentment.
When they finally rest their hands on his chest and lean their forehead into his wet hair, Raphael finally moves. His hands claps Tav's, thumbs rubbing theirs gently. Tav reclines into the silence of the moment. But they are not done yet.
"Come," they murmur into the devil's ear.
Raphael climbs out of the tub and there is little water to dry off his hot skin. For a moment, Tav considers applying soothing lotion but the image of how they'd have to climb all over him like a monkey makes them discard the idea.
Instead they tug him towards the bed. Raphael still looks exhausted, eyes dim and face slack, but his gaze follows them and a smile plays at the corners of his mouth when he identifies the direction of their journey.
He resist a little, when Tav puts him onto the sheets face-first but soft touches convince him to play along. The devil stretches out with a deep sigh and Tav lets their hands wander of his back. Raphael turns when they stop but Tav puts a finger over his lips.
"Wait for me."
They allow Raphael to kiss their fingers gently before they get down from the bed to grab a bottle of scented oil. Vanilla and cinnamon bolstering sour cherries and heavy musk. Tav kneels at the feet of their devil and places one of them in their lap. With a dollop of oil, they start to massage the sole. Raphael grunts, head dropping back onto the sheets. Having made their point and gotten their will, Tav works their way up slow. Feet first, legs and a carefully curated stint on the ass. It takes some balancing not to get Raphael too excited. It would likely not have worked if he hadn’t been so exhausted.
The tail is next. Tav watches the muscles relax and Raphael's breath turn deep. Not kissing him all over takes a lot of self-control. But they have a different goal this time. The devil turns his head to glance at them when Tav settles on the small of his back. But they just smile and distribute oil over his shoulder back.
Raphael lie down again and Tav gets to work with a smile. Their hands are small on the cambion form and the pressure can't be as strong as they want it but they will make do. Regular movements massage the muscles from the spine outwards. They press their thumbs into the shallow dent at the base of his skull before working down and out gain. It is a familiar routine and they fall into its rhythm easily.
Devils don't have to sleep but after fifteen minutes, Raphael is out as cold as they come. Tav phases out their massage and settles with their head between his wings, arms curled under his chest and up around his shoulders. It isn't the most comfortable position to sleep in but that doesn't matter. He is back, he is here and warm and all that they want.
Tav dozes, slipping in and out of a golden cocoon of almost sleep until Raphael moves. He rolls his shoulders and wings. When Tav slips of his back they are intercepted by a strong arm and wedged under the devil like a body pillow.
They smile up and cup his cheek with one hand, trailing gentle fingers down the side of his face and throat. Raphael leans into a kiss and their lips meet soft and gentle. They proceed at a leisurely pace, hands and mouths confirming the existence of the other.
Tav melts into the warm embrace until they beak apart, to leave gentle trails over each other's skin. Trails that cover arms and stomachs and sides. There is no pressure in the pleasure. Only towards the end, when a certain urgency is necessary to finish, do they speed up, breath mingling as they cling to the one another close and fast.
They kiss in the afterglow, back to the quiet gentleness that knows no hurry and worry. Tav doesn't want to let go of his body that covers them with sweet heaviness as his breath caresses their face. But the moment slowly drips from between their fingers even as they look up into the brightly burning eyes of their devil. "Dem Sieger." Tav brushes their lips against his.
Raphael leans down to return the kiss like a promise kept. He props himself up on his elbows to gaze down at Tav. They look utterly soft – utterly his. Almost. He runs a finger along their face and relishes in how Tav leans into the touch, eyes glued to his full of tenderness. Soon.
Glasya was the last fight before he faces his father. The other hells will bargain for alliances, maybe Mephistopheles will as well. The thought warms him almost as much as the soft hands of Tav on his skin. As soon as Mephistopheles is gone, their soul will be free. Will be his. He presses a soft kiss onto their lips, a claim Tav readily accepts.
"Your war, I know." They smile as they say it.
Raphael gets up, slow and reluctant. His absence sends goosebumps over Tav's skin, exposed to air that is cool in comparison. Raphael watches appreciatively, one hand chasing the shivering trails. "Once Mephistopheles is accounted for, it will slow down," he promises.
"It will be prudent to give the hells some time to get used to their new ruler." He continues. "But Mephistopheles has to be dealt with quickly."
Tav smiles back, stretching a little under his glance. "I understand. And I appreciate it." They watch as Raphael snaps his clothes back into place and adjusts them in the mirror.
"Find me when you are ready," Raphael says as he leaves, eyes raking over their naked body a last time.
Tav blows him a kiss. When the door closed behind their devil they slump back and concentrate on the feeling of air cooling their skin until the wetness drying cold between their legs turns uncomfortable. But a bath is a remedy for that. Tav hums as they pour warm water over themself.
They smooth down their wet hair, watching the person in the mirror closely. Is it still the same one that went into the hells? Tav can't even say how long ago that has been. Crescent marks on their skin in varying states of healing have no answer either. They should ask Wyll when he returns.
A rumbling stomach leads Tav to the feast hall next. It is a somewhat lonely experience, everything to big for a lowly human and any devils partaking out of sheer indulgence ignore them out of principle. Tav takes the long way back to the throne room. It seems forever that they last visited the archive. The place of honour is once again taken by the Orphic Hammer.
Haarlep takes exactly half a minute to shoo them away, citing their duties. The fall of Glasya has opened up an exciting new market, it seems. Leery faces abound and Tav isn't keen on staying around long enough to turn into a temptation themself. It hurts only a little. Raphael is waiting.
The mere thought brings a smile to Tav's lips. Raphael. Waiting. For them. Tav bounces down the stairs, taking up speed and for once the devils have to get out of their way if they don't want to scrape human off their armour. And they don't want to. The path clears itself. Tav wants to twirl. But that is undignified and also a little too personal for public display.
They suppress the urge to dance across the throne room as best as they can but the swing in their step and arms is noticeable.
The door to Raphael's study stands open. Tav watches their devil for a moment. He leans forward over the desk, reading in concentration, a quill ready in his hand to strike at inadequate expressions. Around him, the huge study looks almost small. Only the desk – Tav grins, oh such a huge desk – looks actually big.
When Raphael looks up, a smile tugs at his lips. He doesn't move otherwise though, just holds Tav's glance. They come closer slowly, pulled in by the black eyes holding them close. Their fingers trail over the smooth wood of the desk as Tav walks around it to lean against the devil's side.
"There you are." A simple statement accompanied by Raphael's arm around their waist.
Tav hums a reply and presses a kiss on his temple. The can make out enough of the infernal on the parchment to identify it as a complicated legalese text. "Making progress?"
"Always." He smiles. "Everybody apart from Asmodeus has made their move. Maladomnia and Mephistopheles want to bargain."
"And you will receive them."
"Of course."
"Mephistopheles as well."
The hand on Tav's side tightens for the broken moment Raphael hesitates with his answer. "Of course."
"Can't say I like it," Tav sighs. "But I guess I understand."
Raphael regards them for a moment. "Come, sit with me."
Tav blinks but follows the invitation.
Raphael wraps one arm around them, using the other to make notations on his papers. It must be inconvenient.
"Why?" Tav asks softly.
"To get you some more of those healthy hugs.” Mischief sparkles in the words. "Every little bit helps and I hear you are in dire need of help and health."
Haarlep gossiping most likely. Tav leans their head against his shoulder and closes their eyes. It isn't as lonely here, held firmly against their devil's chest, the beat of his heart a seductive rhythm under their head.

Gideon the Ninth, Chapter 11
(Curious what I'm doing here? Read this post! For detail on The Locked Tomb coverage and the index, read this one! Like what you see? Send me a Ko-Fi.)
(First House icon) In which the cavaliers duel, very sportsmanlike.
Those early days at Canaan House are too empty for Gideon. She spends a lot of them working out, for lack of anything more useful. One morning at breakfast, the lovely Third twin shows up, as charming as she is beautiful with those deep violet eyes, and says she's organizing sparring matches among the cavaliers, and will the Ninth accept the invitation as well?
If Gideon had not been so lonely; if Gideon had not been so used to having a fighting partner, even one more used these days to battling rheumatism; if Coronabeth Tridentarius had not been so astonishingly hot. All these ifs she contemplated wearily, led by the Third House necromancer down the poky, confined little staircase immediately familiar to her as the one she'd explored before; down to the dark, tiled vestibule with the flickering lights, and through to the room with the foul-smelling chemical pit.
The room is in the process of being cleaned by some skeletons, supervised by some of the other cavaliers. Magnus says of course Corona was able to snag the Ninth, and starts Being A (Metaphorical) Dad about Jeannemary, the dreadful teen next to him, who wails in in bracketed tiny text for him to stop, and eventually runs off to a bench in the far corner.
Corona suggests that Gideon, it was Gideon right? That Gideon duel Magnus first, and not to listen to him about being a bad cavalier.
"Of course I'm willing, and the princess is gracious," he said, "but I didn't get to be the cavalier primary due to being the best with a rapier. I'm cavalier primary only because my adept is also my wife. I suppose you could say that I--ha, ha-- cavalier primarried!" From the other side of the room, Jeannemary let out a long noise like a death rattle. Princess Corona laughed outright; Magnus looked extremely pleased with himself. The faces of the other two were patiently blank. Gideon made a mental note to write down the joke so that she could use it herself later.
So, Corona asks again if the Ninth will accept. Stronger women than Gideon had surely given in to Corona's presence. Gideon steps up to the dais, and Magnus's eyes widen when he realizes she's not going to take off her cumbersome robe, hood, or sunglasses. The room intensifies, and even Jeannemary sits up to watch.
When Gideon pulls out her knuckle knives for her off hand, there's some discussion about their not being traditional for the Ninth, and whether they're even really a viable option. Gideon is getting used to being spoken at instead of to, a side effect of her keeping silence.
Magnus begins to ask a question, then gestures at Gideon's robes as if to ask if she plans to remove them. Gideon shakes her head, and Magnus shrugs, slightly bewildered. Corona offers to arbitrate, and they move into position. To the first touch, clavicle to sacrum(1), no arms. Gideon is used to "to the floor", not "first touch", but she'll deal with that as it comes. She can see that Magnus is a little afraid of her.
The fight occurs(2), with Gideon letting her arms, "where the best of her cerebral matter lay", do the thinking. Finally, the match is called for the Ninth. The other cavaliers are enthralled, though the fight was short. Gideon is relieved that Aiglamene's honour goes another day intact, while Magnus starts contemplating if he's too old, out of form, if he and Abigail should just divorce.
Naberius Tern, however, is watching Gideon from close enough that she can see his eyes, heterochromic, blue spotted with light brown. He says he'd like the next match, leaving it unspoken that he wants to face Gideon. Princess Corona says not to be silly, the Ninth just fought. He says she looks like she didn't even break a sweat. It'll let Dyas get another look at him, too. The Cohort cavalier, obviously hight(3) Dyas, raises her eyebrows precisely one eighth of an inch to indicate just how much (little) she wants to get another look at him.
Corona asks Gideon what she thinks. Gideon shrugs, a gesture that anyone at Drearburh would recognize as the precursor of Gideon doing something "particularly daft", but Corona interprets it as acceptance.
There's some protest about the adept officiating for her cavalier, but Corona says she's harder on Babs than anyone else, and calls it. Shortly, they're in position, just as she was with Magnus a minute ago. When they stand next to each other, Naberius calls for the Third and asks, very quietly, who Gideon is, because she's no necro suitcase like the Ninth turns out for cavs these days. Gideon is glad she's been practicing silence, because she resents his contemptuous tone, resents "suitcases", resents his hair.
Fortunately, Corona calls for Gideon, they step apart, they begin, they fight(4), the most irritating fight Gideon's ever had. Naberius toys with her, until he does something… perfect.
It was probably recorded in some shitty Seventh-style swordplay book as TWO CROWS DRINKING WATER or THE BOY STRANGLES THE GOOSE.(5)
Naberius's move disarms Gideon of her sword, and he tops it off by saying "You cut too much," with his irritating smile. Gideon, hero of our hearts, winds up her now-free hand and punches Naberius in the solar plexus.(6) Gideon retrieves her sword while he flails for breath, takes stance, and lets the tip of her sword sit on his collarbone.
Corona calls the match for the Third, because the punch was cheating by formal rules. He says she's no Nonius reborn, she's just a brawler, she should have bowed when he disarmed her. Dyas says Tern let his guard down, and yes, technically Gideon is the less able duelist, but she's the better fighter. Though he's right that she cuts too much.
At this, Naberius is furious and looks ready to declare a rematch, but Corona gives him a half-hug and ruffles his hair and says the Third showed its stuff, that's all she cares about. Jeannemary speaks up from the corner and says that she wants to fight like the Ninth, like her life is on the line, not in some tame duel. Naberius starts to get wound up, but Magnus interrupts to suggest they do practice forms, or something, anything but thinking more about Gideon's fights.
Gideon takes off her knuckle knives, thinking about how she wants to learn that disarm, but she doesn't dare ask Naberius about it now. Some sixth sense makes her look up, and she locks eyes with Harrow, who was obviously watching her, before she (Harrow) turns and disappears into the vestibule.
=====
(1) Clavicle is collarbone, just below the throat, and sacrum is technically at the lower back but implies "pelvis" without opening the door to crude jokes. (2) What, you think I can do it justice in summary, or that I'm going to quote most of a page of narration after those other long quotes? (3) Hight - named. Muir just loves to make you use the dictionary. (4) Still not gonna try to describe something I don't even properly understand myself. Feel free to discuss in the replies or reblogs. I'm always fascinated by people for whom description isn't just white noise. (5) I know this is probably pretty common in a certain kind of book, but when I see sword forms like this, I can't help but think of the Wheel of Time, and all the incomprehensible sword forms named therein. If I ever cover it for this blog, cleaning up my old notes, I'll have to draw more attention to them because they're absolutely hilarious sometimes. Still, I wonder what specifically Muir might have been referring to. (6) Solar plexus - also known as the celiac plexus; a bundle of nerves behind the stomach, just below the middle of the bottom of the ribcage. (Ow.)

The Benefits of Epoxy Flooring for Retail Spaces
In the competitive world of retail, creating an inviting and functional space is essential for attracting customers and enhancing their shopping experience. One significant aspect of retail design that is often overlooked is flooring. Epoxy flooring has emerged as a popular choice for retail spaces, offering numerous advantages that can elevate both the aesthetics and functionality of a store.
What is Epoxy Flooring?
Epoxy flooring is a type of flooring made from a mixture of resin and hardeners, which, when combined, form a durable, high-gloss finish. This type of flooring is ideal for various applications, including retail spaces, due to its strength, versatility, and aesthetic appeal.
Aesthetics and Customization
One of the most compelling reasons to consider epoxy flooring for retail is its visual appeal. Retailers can choose from a wide range of colors, patterns, and finishes to create a unique look that aligns with their brand identity. Whether you want a sleek, modern appearance or a more rustic finish, epoxy flooring can be customized to meet your design needs. Additionally, the high-gloss surface reflects light, which can make retail spaces appear larger and more inviting.
Durability and Longevity
Retail environments experience heavy foot traffic daily, which can take a toll on flooring materials. Epoxy flooring is incredibly durable and can withstand the rigors of a busy retail environment. It is resistant to scratches, stains, and chemical spills, making it an ideal choice for stores that may have food or drink items. Unlike traditional flooring materials, such as tile or carpet, epoxy can last for many years with proper maintenance, resulting in significant cost savings over time.
Easy Maintenance
Keeping a retail space clean is vital for creating a positive shopping experience. Epoxy flooring requires minimal maintenance, making it a practical choice for retailers. The smooth, non-porous surface prevents dirt, dust, and spills from seeping into the flooring, allowing for easy cleaning with a mop or damp cloth. This low-maintenance characteristic can free up staff time, allowing them to focus on other important tasks in the store.
Safety Features
Safety is a critical consideration in any retail environment. Epoxy flooring can be formulated with slip-resistant additives to enhance safety, reducing the risk of slips and falls. Additionally, epoxy is non-toxic and environmentally friendly, making it a safe choice for retailers who want to prioritize the health and safety of their customers and employees.
Cost-Effectiveness
While the initial investment in epoxy flooring may be higher than some traditional flooring options, its long-term benefits can make it a cost-effective choice. The durability and low maintenance requirements mean that retailers will spend less on repairs and replacements over time. Moreover, the aesthetic appeal of epoxy flooring can help attract more customers, potentially leading to increased sales.
Installation Flexibility
Epoxy flooring can be installed over various existing flooring materials, which can reduce installation time and costs. Retailers can often have the new flooring installed without extensive renovations, minimizing disruption to daily operations. Additionally, the installation process can often be completed quickly, allowing stores to reopen sooner and start enjoying the benefits of their new flooring.
Epoxy flooring is an excellent investment for retail spaces, offering a blend of durability, aesthetic appeal, and low maintenance. By choosing epoxy, retailers can create a visually appealing environment that enhances the shopping experience while ensuring safety and cost-effectiveness. Whether you are renovating an existing space or designing a new store, consider the many benefits of epoxy flooring to help your retail business thrive.

Two Weeks Notice - Day Eight
~With the world practicing self-isolation, Y/N and Dean break all the rules of social distancing and common decency as they explore an empty bunker and use the time alone to their playful advantage…~

Y/N stood at the side of the bed and checked the time on her phone again, deciding enough was enough.
Very slowly, she slid into bed beside Dean and curled up next to him, tucking her knees and hands against her chest. She was careful not to touch him, not wanting him to wake just yet. She stared for a while, like she loved to do, attempting for the thousandth time to count every freckle on his sleeping face. She never made it past thirty before he either woke to disrupt her or she got so distracted by his beauty that she lay into kissing him instead.
She interrupted herself this time, too excited not to rouse him. With the tip of her index finger, Y/N softly traced the line of his nose from bridge to tip and then again as she whispered his name.
“Dean…”
He wriggled his nose and huffed. “I’m asleep.”
She laughed under her breath and ran her finger over his nose again. “Time to get up.”
He groaned and jerked his head to the side, trying to swat her away. “You promised me a nap.”
“And nap you did. It’s nearly three. Get up.” She leaned forward and kissed the tip of his nose. She meant to hop out of bed immediately after, but Dean’s reflexes were quick, and he grabbed her arm, yanking her down for a proper kiss.
His arm locked her to him, clamping down and around the small of her back like a gate closing. He moaned into her mouth, leisurely licking at her gasping lips, and Y/N felt the stir of desire ready to distract her fully.
“Nope!” She pushed him back and sat up, quickly shaking off the shiver of need.
Dean popped up as well. “Excuse me?” His forehead creased adorably as he questioned her departure.
Y/N crossed her arms. “I have plans for today.”
Dean groaned and fell back against his pillow. “You always have plans.”
Offended, Y/N pushed at his nearest shoulder and damn near rolled him out of bed. “We can stop anytime you want. Just sit here and stare at the walls for another week.”
Dean sighed. “Fine.”
“Don’t fucking sigh at fucking. What’s wrong with you, old man?”
He half turned, glaring over his shoulder at her.
“Stop being grumpy and go get the blue box from under my bed.”
“You get it.”
Y/N swiftly removed her shirt and tossed it in his face. “You get it.”
Dean rubbed a tired hand down his face and sat up, swinging his feet over the side of the bed. “Why do you need your photos now?”
“Photos are in the green box,” she corrected. “I want the blue box. It’s towards the headboard next to the hatchet.”
He paused, hand on the doorknob. “Why do you have a hatchet under your bed?”
Y/N shrugged and settled into the pillows. “Grimes Protocol.”
Dean laughed and shook his head as he stepped into the hallway. “The Walking Dead isn’t real, Y/N!”
Grinning, she shimmied out of her panties. “You don’t know what this Corona-thing is gonna do! I’d rather be safe than dead!”
Her room wasn’t very far and even if it was, with the empty hallway, it was easy enough to talk through the space between. His voice was a little muffled by the distance, but Y/N could just picture his face.
“Holy crap!”
“Pick one!”
“What do you mean pick one?”
Y/N sat up and pushed her voice towards the open door. “I mean, pick one and get back here with it!”
“Can I pick two?”
She chewed her lip for a moment. She knew what was in the box and would not be opposed to him using more than one at a time. Not at all.
Before she could reply, Dean yelled, “Hey, what’s this pink squiggly thing?”
Her eyes lit up and her nipples hardened with excitement. “Bring it!”
The ‘pink squiggly thing’ was an internal, remote controlled vibrator, and one of Y/N’s favorite toys. Dean was a little annoyed that she had never shared the contents of her toy box with him, and thus decided to use the remote control app to his advantage, in a little game that he was making up as he was going along.
For the rest of the day, Y/N was to wear the toy, and only the toy, as she went about her usual routine. There were plenty of chores to be done around the Bunker, and Y/N was going to do them all while Dean did whatever he wanted. The catch was simple: whenever she got buzzed, she would fall to her knees and crawl to wherever Dean was and service him in any way he chose. It was only fair.
After all, she had disturbed his nap.
There was something intensely erotic about walking around the Bunker naked. Dean had been nice enough to let her wear socks, as the floors were always cold, but the rest of her was completely bare, on display for the ghosts that haunted the tiles.
Of course, there weren’t really any ghosts, but as she walked down the halls, she imagined the Men of Letters of old gasping and clutching their hearts as they saw her defiling their sacred underground lair. Oh, how they’d lose their minds.
With a proud smile, she shook her hips a little more as she carried the laundry basket to the machine. Even under quarantine, socks must be washed.
As she set the basket down in front of the washer, she felt a wave of vibration deep inside her cunt. Her body stiffened and her muscles squeezed against it, momentarily blocking any brain function as the pleasure took her by surprise. When she could think, she immediately dropped to her knees on the cold tile and turned, ready to crawl to her newly appointed master.
Dean wasn’t far, leaning in the doorway with a smirk on his lips and his phone in hand. He swiped his finger across the app and the vibration intensified, making Y/N shiver as she crossed the room to sit at his feet.
“Very good!” he praised, resisting the urge to reach down and pat her head like a dog. He knew she liked to be degraded, but that would probably have earned him a hard flick in the nuts.
Y/N licked her lips and sat back on her heels, clenching her thighs as the buzzer kept doing its job. She looked up and smiled, waiting. “How may I service you, Dean?”
He hummed and dropped the intensity. “Dean,” he echoed. “Sounds so... informal.”
She bit back a smirk. “I’m sorry.” Clearing her throat and squeezing her tits together, she tried again. How may I service you, Mr. Winchester?”
“Better,” he said with a shrug, tapping his screen to make the buzzing pulse at a steady pace. “But...let’s try… Sir. I think I’d like to hear that.”
Y/N closed her eyes as a wave of pleasure overtook her momentarily. She’d been wanting to call him that forever, that and more, but it was an awkward conversation. However, if they were already playing, and he was offering…
“Yes, Sir,” she cooed, looking up at him and batting her eyes. “How may I service you?”
A smile broke out across his face. “Oh, I like the sound of that.” He cocked his head and looked her over, deciding where to start. “Why don’t you rub those pretty tits for me? I want to see how hard your nipples can get.”
Y/N bit her lip and nodded. “Yes, Sir.” Both hands cupped her breasts and she bounced them for him, watching as his eyes widened with delight. A few twists and tugs on her nipples had them standing tall and each tweak made her shoulders twitch.
When her breath began to get heavy and her eyes refused to open, Dean turned off the app and her vibrator and shoved his phone in his back pocket. “That’s all for now. Get back to work.”
Y/N’s eyes were huge as he spun on his heel and walked away, shocked that he was actually leaving her like that. “Fuck,” she whispered to herself as she climbed to her feet. “It’s gonna be a long day.”
Dean was in the Library when Y/N walked in with her duster. She and Sam had a routine worked out where she knocked the dust onto the floor and he mopped it up. Seemed sort of silly for her to be reaching up so high when he was so tall already, but she figured the boys liked watching her climb and stretch and bend.
Dean was certainly appreciating it now. He pretended to read a book, something he had grabbed from the shelf without looking at the spine as he jumped into the armchair to beat her into the room, but his eyes were glued to Y/N’s bare ass as she fluttered around the room, cleaning.
As she dusted, she hummed to herself. It was a sweet familiar melody, something that Dean felt had a Disney ring to it. He smiled and gave up the ruse, closing the book in his lap and resting his chin in his hand, elbow on the arm of the chair.
Her nakedness stood out starkly against the stacks of books; she looked like a faerie floating about, whipping away dust with her feathery wings.
“So this is love...do do do do... so this is love…” Y/N made her way through the Library, flicking away every drop of dust and totally ignoring Dean. She could feel his eyes on her body, following wherever she went, but she kept her mind on her task. When she felt that she’d done enough, she looked around, hands on her naked hips, and nodded. “Very nice.”
Another swoosh of feathers against the nearest shelf and she took off, heading into the next room. As her foot hit the bottom stop, her vibrating bat signal went off.
Taken so by surprise, the feather duster fell from her hand like an angel falling from heaven. “Oh my…” She moaned at the violent pulsing against her g-spot and sank to her knees, slowly turning towards Dean.
His eyes were dark and mischievous as he controlled the toy, thumb sliding back and forth across the screen, mucking with the intensity and speed of the vibrations. With his free hand, he crooked a finger at her and puckered his lips, calling to her with two quick air kisses. “Here, kitty, kitty.”
Y/N crawled to him, hands and knees flat on the polished floor, bare ass high and open for any eyes that would have a week ago been passing by. She shivered at the thought and bit her lip, holding in a tiny moan of weakness as Dean drove the toy to its highest setting.
As she grew closer, he let her stimulation ebb, slowly subsiding to a light and steady wave. She sank down further, laying on her forearms, panting slightly as she looked up at him.
Dean set the book down on the end table next to him and leaned forward, clasping his hands, elbows on his knees. “Hey there,” he grinned, body tingling with the power he held over her. “How ya feelin’?”
Almost out of breath, Y/N looked up, stretching her neck awkwardly to meet his gaze. “I’m pretty fucking horny, actually.”
Dean laughed and licked his lips. He scooted to the edge of the chair so he was even closer to her and whispered, “Is your pussy nice and wet?”
His voice ran down her spine like fire, and she nodded. “Very wet, Sir.”
He tapped his upper lip with one finger and then sat back, getting comfortable. “So play with it,” he ordered casually, resting one hand on his right thigh, watching.
Y/N swallowed hard and sat up, spreading her knees wide as she rested on her heels. One hand fell behind her, palm flat on the cold floor as the other slid down her belly and tapped gently on her clit. She bit her lip as the pleasure rolled through her; the vibe inside, her hand on her clit, it was all breathtaking and delicious.
Dean watched on as she rubbed, fiddling now and then with the controls. He loved the tremble in the soft flesh of her thighs; the way she began to bounce as if on his cock as she got closer to cumming. He kept a closer eye on that edge, making sure she rode it as long as possible without tipping over. When her stomach tightened too much, he eased up on the vibrations. When her panting ceased, he turned it up. When her eyes began to roll and her jaw hung slack, letting out heated moans, he cut the power, turning the toy off completely.
“Wha-hey!” Y/N’s eyes popped open and she pouted, near to tears as she was denied once more.
“Hands off, Princess,” he told her, clearing his throat and picking up his book. Dean crossed one leg and turned to a random page, tearing his eyes from Y/N’s shivering body. “Get back to work.”
She grumbled to herself as she struggled to her feet, using a nearby chair for help. “You suck.”
Dean lifted a brow, but not his head. “What’s that?”
“Nothing…”
Dinner came and went with Y/N still naked, sitting at the table on a dishcloth. Dean let her be for a while, keeping his phone and the app safely tucked in his pocket. She had even gotten used to being naked in the open. It felt sexy, freeing, if not a little chilly now and then.
Somehow, Dean managed to keep his hands off of her the entire day, not even accidentally brushing against her or playing footsie under the table. Nothing stopped him from looking, however, and he spent his quiet time memorizing the curves and movements that he never got to see in the dark. She was perfectly imperfect, just like him.
After dinner, Dean disappeared, leaving Y/N alone to do the dishes and clean up. She’d just about finished putting the utensils away when her page went off, sending jolts of pleasure through her body.
“Fuck.” She turned around, but Dean wasn’t in the room with her. “Dean?”
There was no answer, but the buzzing increased. Y/N dropped to her knees and crawled quickly from the kitchen, wondering where he’d gotten to and hoping the remote didn’t have too long of a range.
“Dean?” she called again to no response, growing more aroused and annoyed as the stunt went on. She’d have to crawl the entire Bunker looking for him if he didn’t answer. Her knees were starting to protest as she toddled up the steps into the War Room, but the pulsing in her cunt took some of the edge off.
“Where the hell are you?”
“Tisk. Tisk.” His voice boomed through the giant room, her toy speeding up as he scolded her. “Mind your manners, missy.”
Still on her hands and knees, Y/N looked around the War Room, unable to find him anywhere. He was a disembodied voice teasing her from another world.
“Dean, come on…”
“You need to crawl to me,” he said loudly, “that was the deal.”
She gasped as he pushed the toy to its limit. “Yeah but...where- fuck- are you?”
Y/N teetered on her knees as Dean laughed at her predicament. She crawled on, moving towards the table.
“Warmer.”
Biting her lip, she listened to his echoing directions, crawling closer to the table. When she reached it, the buzzing subsided enough to catch her breath, and she turned towards the Library archway.
“Colder!”
Y/N spun back and continued through the room. As she neared the stairs, the vibrations increased and Dean guided her home.
“Hot.”
Slowly, she sat back on her feet and looked up the long metal staircase.
Dean waved and grinned smugly from his seat at the chess set on the balcony. “Boiling.”
Y/N’s hands instinctively flew to her hips. “Are you kidding me?”
With a swipe of his finger, Dean upped the pleasure and Y/N fell back down into crawling position.
“Imma kill you.”
Dean laughed. “I don’t think that’s likely.”
One step at a time, Y/N climbed, fingers curling into the ornate grates, knees pushing into the smooth metal. It was cold and hard but she managed, keeping her mind in the gutter, comforted and fueled by the intimate pleasure of her favorite toy, controlled by her favorite asshat.
Dean hid his surprise well when she reached him, figuring Y/N would have given up halfway up the winding staircase. “Welcome,” he teased, lowering the speed. “Nice of you to join me.”
She was panting already, out of breath from her climb. “Nice of you to pick such an easily accessible location.”
Her sass was vibrant and Dean bit his lip, grinning.
“How’s your sweet little cunt doing?” he asked, tip of his tongue pressing between his teeth.
Y/N shivered. “It’s...good.”
“Just good?” His thumb waved over the controls, brushing the toggle back and forth.
“V-very good.”
Dean let her linger in that moment of fluctuating pleasure and sat back, opening his jeans while he watched her twitch. He set the control to a setting called “fireworks” and lay his phone down, taking his cock in his hands instead. He stroked it slowly while the explosions went off inside her pussy.
“What does it feel like?” he asked, lips puckering as he jerked his cock.
Eyes closed and lips shaking, Y/N shook her head, unable to find an answer. “Like...like you’re drumming inside me. Like lightning… like… fuck- I don’t know.” Her eyes popped open and locked on his erection, mouth flooding at the sight.
Dean smirked. “Do you want it?”
She nodded.
“Tell me where.”
She chewed her lip hard, brows furrowing tight, chest heaving. “I…”
Dean fisted his cock, squeezing at the base. “Tell me where you want it.”
“In my pussy,” she begged, chin quivering, near to tears. “Please, Dean. I need you to fuck me so bad.”
“Yeah?”
“Please!”
“Get up here.”
Moaning with relief, Y/N jumped up into his lap, kissing him wildly as his hands locked around her back. She licked into his mouth, bit at his ear, sucked his lip between her teeth. She’d been too crazed all day, too desperate to hold back any longer. She felt his cock against her belly and bounced, rubbing her throbbing clit against his veiny underside.
Dean grunted. His blunt nails dug into her ass.
“Fuck me, Dean.”
Her whisper floated through him and he grabbed her tight, standing up and spinning, dropping her onto the empty chess set. She gasped but settled quickly, wiggling into place on the oversized antique gameboard. He dropped his jeans, letting them collect around the tops of his boots and then reached down to yank the still vibrating toy from her cunt.
Y/N cried out as the toy dislodged, a flood of hot built-up slick running down her ass as it went. “Fuck!”
“I’m getting to it!” Dean huffed back, tossing the toy over his shoulder. It hit the railing and disappeared down below, to be remembered only by a faint buzzing as it danced across the glowing table.
Y/N grabbed hold of the back of his neck and scooted down to the edge of the board, wrapping her legs tight around him. He sank inside without hesitation or restriction, covering himself in her wet flesh, hiding deep inside.
It was fast and hard, the way she came on his cock; her pussy clamping down on him as he thrust in and out. Hours of torture, being played with and edged had left her a sloppy mess, and Dean savored every second. He kissed her breathless, keeping his eyes open so he could watch hers roll. He nipped at her collarbone and rubbed at her clit.
She had been waiting all day, but so had he.
The pawns and bishops rolled inside the table, safe in their velvet cubbies. The pink toy died a slow death, battery draining somewhere around South America.
Above the empty Bunker, not far from the big steel door, Dean made her cum again, rolling her first orgasm into another, his thumb winding around her clit until she screamed at the soreness, slapping him away.
He set his hands beside her head, fingers curling around the edges of the old wood, pulling it close as his hips pushed forward. The thick muscles of his arms strained against his shortsleeves and Y/N pressed her nails deep into his biceps, clawing at him, her teeth grit, eyes dark and exhausted.
“Come on, Dean,” she urged, voice deep and cracking. “Give it to me, please.”
His jaw clenched, sweat beading on his upper lip and brow.
“Cum inside me, Dean. Please.”
Another rough jerk of his hips sent him over. Dean trembled over her, phantom thrusts pushing him even deeper as he emptied into her.
When the best had passed, he looked down with a goofy smile. Green eyes glazed, freckled cheeks bright, lips swollen and red as he laughed, “Checkmate.”

Stolen Sunlight
Fandom: Tangled | Tangled the Series | Rapunzel’s Tangled Adventure
Summary: Arianna never thought she'd find herself afraid of a fourteen-year-old boy, but the events of Secret of the Sundrop won't seem to leave her.
She needs to talk to Varian in prison. Not for his sake...but for her own.
Character focus: Arianna and Varian
Notes: This is a fic I started writing many many years ago, during the hiatus between seasons 1 and 2. I intended to post it way back then, as a long one-shot. I continued to occasionally work on it over the years, however, it's proven one of the hardest fics I've ever written to edit, (mostly due to the amount of internal monologue).
I finally decided that probably the only way to get it actually edited and posted is to break it up into multiple chapters, despite the fact that it's essentially only one scene, and I feel like that messes with the format. Hopefully it'll help me edit, and end up making it easier for people to read too XD I might post the full version of this, unbroken up, too after I finish it. But I finally got fed up with my editing process and decided this was the only way.
I'm aware that plenty of other people have written Varian and Arianna fics over the years, but at the time I started this there weren't that many yet, and I worked so hard on this, I still wanted to post it, even if others have done things like it. Plus, I'm not sure how many people have written it this heavily from Arianna's perspective.
I hope you all enjoy it, either way! Please don't hesitate to leave a comment to let me know, if so!!
Chapter 1: Fractured Memory
Sun splinters through the castle windows, designing reflections on the newly polished floor.
When she walks into the library, her mouth drops open; The entire room gleams. That Corona sunlight bounces between the tiles, tables, and shelves like a little boy full of energy, laughing as he leaps around the room.
It may be a royal library, but there’s usually still a layer of dust draped over everything, sealing up the gaps, and clogging up the stories. The servants try their best, but it’s hard to get into all the crevices between the shelves, the cracks between the pages.
The tiles glitter, the shelves look new, the books don’t cough up dust when she lifts them, even a few of their bindings are mended.
She stays a while to admire it before heading back for her room, and as she does, Arianna smiles, her gait almost dreamy—so like her daughter’s.
Who would take such care to polish her library? She appreciates the gesture more than words can express, but she would like to say ‘thank you’ at least.
A curious sight down the hall interrupts her wondering; a laundry cart, moving on its own.
A very full laundry cart, that is…Cassandra doesn’t usually fill them so much.
“May I…help you?” she walks up to the cart, tilting her head, strands of hair falling to the side.
“Oh, no, it’s fine! I got this!” the laundry cart replies.
The ventriloquist reveals himself: a boy steps out from behind it. She guesses he must be one of Rapunzel’s friends, since she doesn’t remember seeing him here before, and he doesn’t exactly look like a royal servant, (despite the fact that he’s performing one of their jobs).
He pushes back his hair—black, with a streak of turquoise at the front—and smooths out his apron. Upon seeing her, his eyes widen with shock.
“Oh!” he stumbles, attempting to bow too low, too quickly, “Your majesty! I-I am so sorry! I didn’t realize—!”
She laughs, holding out a hand to steady him.
“Don’t worry. Please. I’m Arianna.”
“Oh—O-Okay. That…seems to run in the family,” he mutters beneath his breath. “I’m Varian.” He leans confidently against the laundry cart…which starts moving, so he pulls it back with all his strength before it gets out of hand.
“Oh! Varian! Rapunzel told me about you!”
He freezes, his eyes trailing back to her, like people talking about him is usually a bad thing. “She…She has?”
“Of course!” she steps closer. “You’re the alchemist, right?”
He pauses, blinks, then his face breaks into the biggest grin. He clears his throat, rubbing fake dirt off his gloves, trying to hide his joy, as he looks back up at her. “Ten points to the lady in the crown.”
She smiles.
“Are you here for the completion today?”
He nods. “I think I’ve got a pre-tty good chance of snagging that first prize if I do say so myself,” he pulls on his apron straps, then pauses, realizing how arrogant that sounds. “Not to uh…toot my own horn or anything. But it doesn’t seem like there’s anything like my invention in the running, so I think once Master Doctor St. Croix sees it he’ll be impressed! At least I hope so.”
“Well, if your invention is anything like the ones Rapunzel has told me about you’ll have no trouble snagging that blue ribbon.”
“Oh stop,” he flicks his wrist to wave her off, but is beaming from ear to ear.
She notes that she may be encouraging him a little too much. The experiments Rapunzel has told her about aren’t exactly all blue-ribbon worthy. Or, perhaps they would be…if they all worked properly. At the same time, she isn’t sure labelling him as dangerous, and reckless is really fair. She and Willow had tried out their share of inventions, which often failed in a grand array of explosions. If they had worked properly, growing up wouldn’t have been as colorful. At least he was trying his best to help people with his inventions. Without the explosive failures, there was no room for fiery success either.
“Wait, shouldn’t you be there with the other contestants now?”
“Oh, yeah.” He says nonchalantly. “But I figured since I’m going second-to-last I’ve got a decent amount of time before I have to present. Cassi—Cassandra has agreed to be my assistant, so I’m helping her out with her lady-in-waiting duties first.”
“Don’t let her make you do all her work.” She says in a motherly way. Then gasps, “The library!”
He winces. “Did I do something wrong? I-I can fix it, don’t worry!”
“No, no!” she puts her hands on his shoulders, “So you were the one who cleaned it?”
“Yeees…?”
She pulls him into a hug. “Thank you so much.”—his eyes widen with shock—“I’ve never seen the place look so beautiful.” She releases him.
“Oh!” he rubs the back of his neck and the smile turns sheepish.
“That must have taken you hours!”
“It was no big deal. Nothing a little home-alchemy can’t fix.” He says like a salesman.
“How did you do it?”
“Just a compound of my own invention,” he digs in his pocket and holds up a little, blue orb between his thumb and forefinger. “Most people don’t understand the more practical uses for alchemy.” he marches forward, hands on his hips, in a hyperbolic show of pride, making his voice sound deep, “that’s why I make it a mission to show the world the value of alchemy! To boldly go where no man has gone before!” he laughs, his pose collapsing, “Or something like that.”
No wonder Rapunzel had such nice things to say about him. There weren’t a lot of people out there who were so…genuine. People who cleaned libraries because they needed cleaning, who created solutions for problems simply because they needed fixing.
“Maybe one day you can teach me.”
“Really?” He drops the ball and it explodes into a sudsy mess on the already polished floor. “I mean, not that I think a queen should be doing housework! But…really?”
“Please,” she waves him off. “I wasn’t always a queen, you know. If Willow and I had had tricks like this maybe our house would have always looked like a pigsty. Sometimes I think we started going off on adventures just to get away from the smell.” She leans in closer, whispering behind her hand, “One time, I set the kitchen on fire trying to bake a birthday cake for Frederic.”
He laughs, then pauses like he isn’t sure he’s allowed to. “I guess not every queen is scared to get her hands dirty, huh?”
“Uh huh,” she puts her hands on her hips, “You should have seen the look on his face.”
“Happy birthday huh?”
“Now make sure to always send someone to Monty’s for his cake…spare us all.”
He fails to keep himself from laughing again, then pauses.
“Well… I really should be getting back to these chores. This laundry isn’t going to clean itself, amIright?” he bobs his head and walks backwards to the cart. “But it was really nice talking to you, your Maj—I mean,” he points, “Arianna.”
“Let me help you! This cart is too heavy to carry on your own.” she rushes over to the other end—he’s so thin, she’s afraid he’ll snap in two if he does all the chores by himself.
“No no!” he comes dangerously close to slapping her hands away. “I mean,” he smiles nervously, pulling his fingers close to his chest, realizing his outburst to the Queen. “I wouldn’t want you to get your…er…royal hands dirty…Right?”
She smiles.
Well, if a little stubborn.
“As long as you’re sure.”
*
*
* The scene shifts, smearing like a painting left out in the rain. The reflection becomes more sinister; a glowing tower of amber, and encased within, a man reaching to the sky as if trying to catch rays of sunlight; as if light alone can break himself out of his prison of stained glass. The curtain to this godforsaken show is crumpled at the bottom. A giant machine stands in the middle of the room, made of metal, lightning, and cold, haunting music.
The room smells like sulfur, and rust, and a lot of other chemicals she can’t quite place. Things from the earth which don’t smell natural at all.
The same boy stands before her. The same, and yet…not the same at all. Along with the light from the windows, so too has disappeared the light from his eyes. The blue is something akin to moonlight; less the gleam of day, the reflection of the sunrise, full of hope, instead, more an eclipsed glow, shrouded by darkness.
She feels that rusted metal, the cold in his eyes, wrap like icy hands around her ankles.
She looks quizzically from her cuffed ankles to him. Doesn’t the warden usually cuff the prisoner’s hands?
He seems to understand her confusion, because he answers her unasked question;
“Please,” he scoffs. His eyes meet hers, and he smirks. The words, the smile, no longer contain compassion, they are manufactured with bite and scorn; “I wouldn’t want you to get your royal hands dirty.”
He tugs hard on the chain, showing that it’s connected to the lab’s floor, as if saying to a toddler You’re stuck here, understand? He walks back over to his desk—littered with bottles, liquid bubbling and seething like his emotions, an array of colors that tell nothing of what they contain.
If the color green is sleep, then what color is death?
She looks up at the golden tower in the center of the room. She doesn’t want to, but she can’t look away.
—Look away…like Frederic did, when people like Varian were crying out for his help against the rocks. Look away, like Rapunzel had to when the storm was coming, and Quirin was being imprisoned. Look away, like they all did after the storm passed.
She still couldn’t believe her husband would, could do something like that. That was the reason she was here, the reason the boy was hurt, the reason…the mistake, the poorly made choice.
No, she couldn’t think that way. Besides, she knew he had his reasons, that he wanted to make sure people didn’t panic, and he wanted to keep Rapunzel safe. It wasn’t his fault he didn’t fully understand the situation.
And she would never blame Rapunzel. Rapunzel had had to make one of the most difficult choices of her life that day, had had to learn too much about being queen, too soon: that it was about choices, and sometimes those choices would be leaving behind the one, for the sake of the many.
And the amber was the other reason, and that wasn’t Frederic’s fault...The amber Varian himself had mistakenly made.
Still, it would have been so easy. So easy to come back to him once the storm had ended. So easy...
So where did the fault lie, really?—
Was it amber? Was amber the color of death? Or just another kind of sleep?
The boy’s eyes shift, glaring at her with nothing more than bitterness.
Or was it blue? The color of the moon, a well-timed strike of lightning, an icy landscape. Was blue the color of death?
“What are you going to do?”
“Yeah,” he scoffs, “I’ll reveal my whole plan to you. Let me go into the tragic backstory of Varian,” he waves his hand grandly, “The poor boy, who lost his father to an experiment, a few rocks, a storm, and a princess’ broken promise.” He leans on the desk, resting his cheek in his hand in some mock-loving fashion, his eyes aimed on her like gunfire. “It’s simple; Rapunzel broke her promise.” He stands back up to his full height—which, admittedly, isn’t very high, but it’s more impressive from her place on the ground. “I tried asking nicely for her help, and I was denied.” He jabs a finger on the table to emphasize his point; the first sign of violence. “Now I’m going to ask” he smirks, tilting his head to the side, his eyes half-lidded in the dark, “not so nicely.”
He pauses a moment, glancing at the chemicals on his desk.
“I once said I’d teach you the ways of practical alchemy.” He reaches forward and takes up a flask. “Well, this isn’t exactly what I had in mind, but I will show you something.”
He walked over to her, holding the flask full of something green and frothy that smells like dog breath.
Was it green? Was death’s color the same as sleep? The colors of leaves and grass and everything everyone thinks is a sign of life. ...It would be a cruel joke.
“This is a little solution I like to call…Varium.” There’s something hurt in his eyes when he says the word. “You see, when it reacts with the rocks,” he runs his fingers along the black spire jutting through the wall between them—one could be fooled into thinking in an intrigued way, but there was something harsh in his touch, resentful in his eyes, “it has this tendency to—” he held it over the stones, the liquid trickling slowly downwards in the flask, teasing her breath to catch itself and fall. He turns the bottle upright, and bites his lip, closing his eyes, willing himself not to turn around and look at what this has done before.
What he’s done.
“Well, you get the idea,” he mutters, returning the flask to his desk.
She doesn’t have to ask, and he doesn’t have to finish.
“You think if you threaten me Rapunzel will work with you?” there’s a bite to her words.
“Ten points to the lady in the crown.”
She pauses as he returns to work, her eyes trailing along the chain, the floor, jumping onto the windowsill—the rocks interrupting her gaze at every bend and break of the room—searching for any way out, any chance at rescue, anything her husband and daughter could use against him.
Was death black? The color everyone thinks it is. The black of these rocks, the low blue glowing beneath them, destroying his home, destroying their hearts, their chances at friendship and…It surely seemed like it.
“She won’t, you know.”
He raises an eyebrow as if to say oh, you think?
“Rapunzel.” She tries to urge her confidence, like a stubborn pet, to come out, but it shies away by the second. “She won’t help you.”
He smiles. “You make your hypotheses, I’ll make mine.”
“And what are yours?” her own eyes are half lidded.
He thinks over his words. “She can’t…help but help. She always had this sick compassion about her.” After a moment he adds softly, “…but only for her kingdom.”
Anger, injustice, bubble within her chest.
“You don’t have to be like this, you know.
“And she didn’t have to break her promise,” he tilts his head, “ya know.”
She grits her teeth, clenches her fist. “I met you once. What happened to that boy who—”
He laughs a little, cutting her off. “Yeah, well, he learned a couple things about the real world.”
For a moment, just one brief moment, there is something there. Something in his eyes, a memory, a reaction, like the chemicals. Something real, something lost, something hurt, something…something not this. Incased within a prison of blue—
And then that moment ended.

Of Rocks and Robots Ch. 2 - The First Night
Varian landed ungracefully on the ground. He looked up to see if any of the knights had seen him fly off the slide, but none were around. He picked himself up and inspected his surroundings. He stood in an alleyway between two tall towers; the crystal slide he had just slid down attached to the side of one of them.
A few moments passed and he nervously began to shift his weight from foot to foot as he waited for someone to appear. Just when he had started to think that the people he had met had abandoned him, he saw the green knight, Wasabi, exit out the front of the building. He turned to find Varian and upon seeing him he smiled and waved. Varian returned the smile and jogged over to where he stood.
“Have fun?” The tall man queried. Varian nodded a reply, out of breath from both the ride down and from running. The man just smiled back at him and then motioned for Varian to follow. He led them to another alley a short ways away. In it was parked a strange metal vehicle on wheels. It looked similar to the ones the men in blue had rode in, only smaller, with no flashing lights on top, and was painted green.
“Wow!” Varian exclaimed as he ran to inspect the new machine. “What is it?”
“Uh…A car.” Wasabi replied as if it was the most obvious answer in the world, but Varian was too excited to notice that he was coming across as weird to the stranger.
“How does it work?” He eagerly asked.
“Umm... Well it runs on a combustion engine. Do..do you not have cars in your world?”
“No.” Varian replied glibly. “Everyone just either walks or rides a horse.”
“Oh, wow, uh..no one’s ridden a horse around here for over a hundred years.” He said with an awkward laugh. He then cleared his throat and asked Varian if he wanted to go for a ride in the fantastic invention.
“Would I ever!?” Varian gleefully exclaimed and with that grabbed the handle of the door, flung it open, and hopped inside. Varian looked in wonder at the dashboard, at all the knobs and dials, and tried to mentally guess what each may do. Wasabi entered from the other side and sat in front of a wheel that Varian guessed was for steering.
“Now the first thing one must always remember to do when riding in a car,” Wasabi instructed with a serious air, "is to strap in one’s seat belt.” With that he grabbed the aforementioned “seat belt” and pulled it over his shoulder buckling it into the metal buckle on the opposite side. Varian dutifully mimicked his action and once completed looked up at the larger man and shyly smiled; looking for acknowledgment that he did it right. The knight smiled back at him approvingly. He then took a small key from his side pocket, placed it in a keyhole next to the wheel, and gave the key a turn. The car roared to life and Varian couldn’t help but giggle in excitement.
----------------------
Ruddiger hid himself inside an alleyway, tucked up under the open lid of a large box. He peered out at the strange people dressed in blue, wondering what they might do, praying they would just leave already. He didn’t know where he was, but it was loud and unnaturally bright. Worse, his boy, who he had arrived with, had been carried away by a strange creature and five other oddly dressed people. He had to get back to him. But how? Where would he even begin to look?
Finally the people in blue piled back into their noisy carts and rode away. He waited for several minutes to see if they would return. When they did not, Ruddiger ventured to poke his head out of the alley and look around. He was rewarded with the sight of Varian walking around the corner into another alleyway. He excitedly took off after his owner. Upon reaching the other alley though, he was greeted with the sight of Varian entering a green cart with another human also dressed in green. Ruddiger recognized the human as one of the ones who had dragged his boy away to start with.
The cart began to move, backing out of the alley, and Ruddiger had to scramble out of the way. It then stopped and turned to face the direction of the street. As it began to speed away, Ruddiger ran after it, made a flying leap, and landed on the back bumper. He then held on as it sped down the road.
----------------------
Varian pressed his face to the window of the car. His nose smooshed up against the glass as he tried to get a better look at the tall buildings as they passed by. Wasabi was off to the side steering while also explaining the various rules and regulations about driving the vehicle. Varian only half way listened. Not because he didn’t care, he did. He found the machine fascinating and wanted to know more, but he also found everything else fascinating too.
Everywhere he looked there was something new to gain his attention. It was honestly a little overwhelming because he couldn’t focus on just one thing. As soon as something grabbed his interest it would slide out of view and another thing would come along and catch his eye. He just sat in silent awe, his head swerving every which way, unable to verbally formulate the millions of questions tumbling through his mind.
Eventually as they went along the buildings got shorter and shorter and further and further apart. After a time Wasabi turned the car into a smaller side street next to a large building with multiple windows and off in the distance Varian could see other shorter but nevertheless still quite impressive buildings with well manicured lawns. Wasabi then pulled the car to a stop alongside several other similar vehicles.
“Well here we are! The San Fransokyo Institute of Technology, also known as SFIT.” Wasabi proudly proclaimed.
“This is a university?” Varian asked in wonderment. Schools of higher learning were rare and expensive places. One had to go outside of Corona to the larger cities and kingdoms to find them and only the richest of nobles and royals got admitted. Varian always knew that attending such bastions of knowledge was a mere dream for a poor farm boy, though he had always hoped to at least see one someday. And here he was about to spend the night at one! “Can I look around?”
“Well maybe tomorrow, or the day after, but the school is closed for spring break so not much is going on right now. But in the meantime it’s getting late, so let’s get cleaned up and get some sleep.” With that he stepped out of the car and Varian followed after him.
They walked into the closest building; the tall one with all the windows. Once inside they then walked up a couple of flights of stairs which lead to a long hallway with doors on either side. Wasabi stopped at the third door on the right which had the number 303 painted on the top. He pulled out another key and unlocked the door and walked inside. Once inside he took off his helmet and flipped a switch next to the door. The room flooded with light revealing a type of living quarters.
“Welcome to my humble abode. Make yourself at ho–” Wasabi stopped mid sentence as the light above him began to flicker off and on. He turned to see Varian switching the light switch up and down with a look of intense interest on his face.
“Fascinating.” Varian said with awe. “The switch appears to be connected to the light above. What connects them and what powers the light?”
“Uhh…..wires and electricity?” Wasabi said completely caught off guard by this new line of questioning.
“Electricity? Like from lightning? How do you harvest lightning?”
“From a power plant” Wasabi said slowly trying to find the words to explain what was, to him, a part of everyday life.
“A plant that generates electricity!? Oh, what kind of plant is it? Like a flower? Or a vine? Or-”
“No, not a living plant.” Wasabi interrupted. “A power plant, like a factory. They use turbines to generate electricity and use copper wires to carry the current to various places. Let me guess, you don’t use electricity in your world either?”
Varian shook his head, suddenly aware that he was completely out of place in this new world and beginning to feel more than a little awkward. He tried to curb his questions and act nonchalant in order to avoid any more embarrassment; placing his hands behind his back and taking a look around at his new surroundings.
Wasabi’s dormitory was comprised of two rooms. The first was simultaneously a sleeping quarters and living space. There was a bed and a dresser in one corner of the room and across from it a small table with kitchen supplies. Next to that was a work desk and then next to it, across from the door, a small yellow sofa, at the foot of which there laid a small green rug. There was a window above the small kitchen area with curtains to match. There wasn’t much room, but it was kept clean and neat and was obviously enough for a single occupant or two. The second room was even smaller and covered in white tiles. Upon inspection Varian deduced it was a type of washroom, but the various bits of furniture within were unlike any he had seen before and his curiosity was piqued once more.
“You can take a shower first if you want.” Wasabi offered.
The shower that he pointed to was a small tiled basin with a drain and a curtain around it, on the side of the wall was a knob and a metal bit of pipe that hung down. Varian turned the knob experimentally and water began to pour from the pipe into the basin.
“Woah” Varian breathlessly laughed as he began to turn the knob in different directions to see what different results it would produce. He was met with different increases in the water pressure and flow from the pipe.
“You gotta turn the faucet all the way to the right for the hot water” Wasabi instructed as Varian fiddled with the shower. Varian promptly followed this advice and the water coming from the pipe started to admit steam indicating that the water was indeed getting hot.
“You know, I once tried to build a hot water system like this for my village a couple of years ago using steam” Varian began to brag but his pomposity quickly deflated when he had to recount how he was unsuccessful in this attempt, “Sadly it didn’t really work out.”
“You don’t have running water, either?” Wasabi asked with a look of concern on his face.
“Well, we had a well and the river,” Varian offhandedly explained, trying to shrug off the larger man’s worry. That’s when the strange seat on the other end of the small room caught his eye.
“Oh, what’s this?” He exclaimed as he pushed down a small lever on its side. He heard a flushing noise and he looked down to see water draining out of the seat portion of the odd chair. He looked back up and immediately knew he had done something wrong when he noted the look of horror on Wasabi’s face.
----------------------
Wasabi scurried about the dorm, dusting and cleaning where he went. The stranger was in the other room taking a shower and Wasabi took this time to organize both his home and his thoughts. Cleaning and organizing was something he enjoyed. It helped him to unclutter his mind and de-stress from the day’s events, and boy what a day this one had turned out to be!
The arrival of the stranger from another world was already weird enough, but the constant new revelations about said world were starting to unnerve Wasabi. Teaching a grown teenage boy what a toilet was not something he had ever considered he would have to do in his life. What kind of hellish nightmare world didn’t have indoor plumbing anyways? He shuddered at the thought.
Soon Wasabi ran out of things to clean. He kept his room so meticulous at all times that there really wasn’t much left to do. He sighed and then decided to turn his attention to the laundry. He changed out of his armor, which was covered in dust and dirt from the explosion, and into some pajamas. He couldn’t just throw said armor into a washing machine, but he could polish it off while the other clothes were washing, so he placed it into the laundry basket anyways. He then picked up the stranger’s clothes that he had left outside of the bathroom door. They were also covered in grime and dirt from the explosion from earlier and so Wasabi had agreed to wash them as well. However he remembered that without running water or electricity there undoubtedly weren’t any washing machines in the stranger’s world either. There was no telling how long he had worn these clothes without cleaning them. Wasabi grimaced and gingerly held the articles of clothing between his forefinger and thumb as he placed them into the basket with the rest of the laundry.
Before he could head down to the dormitory’s laundry room though he needed to find something else for the boy to wear for the night. So Wasabi went scrounging around his chest of drawers to see if he could find anything that might fit. He eventually pulled out a pair of old jogging shorts. He hoped that the drawstring on them could be tied and tightened enough so they wouldn’t slip off the other boy’s small waist. In addition to this he pulled out one of his old hand knitted sweaters. He had made it back in high school and it was getting to be a little too tight for him but it still would be baggy on the kid. Wasabi shrugged. Oh well, it was just to sleep in anyways, the boy’s real clothes would be clean and dry by morning.
Wasabi looked up from what he was doing when he began to hear singing coming from the other room. The kid was taking a while, but Wasabi supposed if it was his first ever shower he would take forever too. That’s when his stomach began to growl. It’d been hours since he’d last eaten and there’s no telling how long it’d been since the stranger had eaten as well. He looked at the clock on his nightstand. Two in the morning; not much left still open except the local pizzeria. Being right next to a college they were open twenty four seven.
“Hey! I’m going to order us a pizza, do you like black olives?” Wasabi yelled through the door.
“Love them!” the boy yelled from the other side.
With that Wasabi folded the clean clothes and laid them on the sofa and then went to call in the order. He had just finished placing the call, with the man on the other end promising to deliver in five to ten minutes, when he turned around and was greeted by the sight of a raccoon clawing at his window.
Wasabi screamed. The wild creature had begun to lift up the bottom panel of the window in order to get in and was squirming his way through. Wasabi rushed over to the window to stop it, tossing his phone on his bed in passing.
“Oh no you don’t!” Wasabi barked while trying to shove the raccoon back outside. That’s when the stranger came out of the bathroom.
He stood there dripping for a few moments, towel wrapped around his waist, trying to process what he was seeing. Suddenly recognition swept across his face and his mouth split into a big grin.
“Ruddiger!” he yelled with joy and then ran up to the window and scooped the raccoon into his arms, bringing him inside and nuzzling his face in the creature’s fur as if it was a pet cat or dog.
Wasabi looked on in silent horror and confusion. Out of all the odd things the kid had done or said today this was the most baffling and disturbing to Wasabi.
“Nope! Unh-uh! No way! We don’t allow wild animals inside dormitories around here!”
“Rudggier’s not wild. He’s tame.” The boy replied with a laugh, still cooing over the masked critter.
“Rudggier? It has a name?” Wasabi asked in disbelief. “Well does it also have it’s shots?”
“Shots?” The boy echoed in confusion.
“Yes. Shots. As in Vaccines.” The boy just stared back at him blankly so Wasabi continued, “You know medicine that’s supposed to prevent you from getting sick?”
“You have medicine that stops people from ever getting sick?” Varian responded in amazement.
This sent Wasabi into a fresh new wave of panic. The kid had no concept of modern technology, hygiene, nor medicine, and here he was snuggling with a diseased ridden vermin claiming it as his pet. Wasabi bit his fist and took deep breaths to try and keep himself from hyperventilating. Once he thought he was calm enough to speak again he continued with his argument.
“Look, pets or any other kind of animal isn’t allowed on school campus so he’s just going to have to go back outside.”
“No.” The younger boy backed away and clutched the raccoon tightly to his chest in a defensive manner. “If Ruddgier goes then I go too.”
“Go where!? We’ve already been through this. You can’t sleep outside.” Wasabi was quickly losing what little patience he had left. He couldn’t understand why the kid was being so obstinate.
Varian was also losing his patience. “I do it all the time. It’s no big deal.” He said with an eye roll.
“Why!? Does everyone in your world live like cavemen!?” The boy looked really offended at that comment but Wasabi didn’t give him a chance to retort back. “Look this isn’t up for discussion. Raccoons aren’t pets and they don’t belong inside. End of story. I don’t even know why you’d ever want that thing around anyways?”
“Because he’s all that I have left!” The boy yelled back ferociously.
Wasabi was taken aback. Not just by the intensity of the boy’s voice but also by the complete change in demeanor. All of the previous wonderment in his eyes was replaced with anger and pain and upon his face was a scowl fiercer than any wild animal. He looked feral and cornered, like he could attack you and/or bolt from the room at a moment’s notice. Then the actual words the boy had said began to sink in; “all that I have left.”
“Oh man.” Wasabi whispered to himself and hung his head in shame. This poor kid was lost. Nothing in this world was familiar to him and his family was a world away, and what had Wasabi done to actually help? Tell him to send away his pet; the one thing that reminded him of home. He sighed and swept a hand across his face, as if the action would wipe away his anxiety and embarrassment. “Look, I’m sorry.”
“What?” The boy responded in disbelief. Whatever he had been expecting the older guy to say, an apology wasn’t it.
Wasabi sighed again and calmly repeated his apology. “I’m sorry. All this time I was thinking about myself and what I was comfortable with, and I didn’t take into consideration your feelings. That was selfish of me and I apologize.”
The teen just continued to look at him with a mixture of confusion and distrust, so Wasabi pressed forward. “Look, perhaps we can come to a compromise.” He slowly suggested, trying to mentally figure out what that compromise might be. However, before he could continue on, there was a knock at the door.
----------------------
Varian watched as Wasabi talked with the man at the door, only paying half attention to their conversation. His brain was still reeling from the fight that had just occurred. Varian wasn’t used to hearing apologies, not sincere ones anyways. There wasn’t a single person in his life who hadn’t let him down before. They would feign interest in his well being only to abandon him later or go back on their word. Therefore, Varian didn’t know what to make of Wasabi. He sounded honest but so had they. Yet, none of them had taken him into their home and offered him help when he needed it either.
Wasabi finished giving the man at the door some green slips of paper, took from him a flat brown box, and wished the man goodnight. The box must have contained some sort of food as Varian could smell roasted garlic and other spices emitting from it.
“Now as I was saying,” Wasabi turned to him, “maybe we can work out a compromise. We really can’t just let a raccoon roam free around the apartment complex, but if you don’t want him to sleep outside, then I can make him up a bed in the bathroom and he has to stay there for the night.”
Varian mulled over the proposal. It seemed fair. Ruddiger would be safe and he wouldn’t need much for the night; just a blanket and some food. Varian began to nod his agreement but Wasabi was already continuing on before he could say anything.
“He can stay, that is, only on three conditions. One, I call the vet in the morning and schedule him a check up and they’ll undoubtedly give him the shots he needs.”
“What’s a vet?”
”An animal doctor. Two, also in the morning we swing by the pet store and buy him a leash, a carrier, and a cage for him to sleep in.”
“A cage!?” Varian was less agreeable to that last condition.
“Yes, a cage. He can’t be wandering around the halls and he can’t be outside unsupervised. You saw all those cars on the road on the way over here, right?” Varian nodded. “Well there’s even more of them going about during the day and you don’t want him to get run over do you, or get lost in the big city because he snuck out during the night?”
Varian looked forlornly down at his pet as he held him. No he didn’t want either of those things to happen, and this was a whole new world, no telling what other dangers existed for a raccoon. But he just knew Ruddiger would hate being stuck in a cage. He sure did. Varian nuzzled his face into the raccoon’s fur, unsure what to do.
“Don’t worry.” Wasabi tried to encourage him ”You can let him out whenever you’re here and can take him outside as long as he has the leash on.”
“Ok.” Varian said softly, his face still buried in his pet as he hugged him.
“Aright, last condition, we can not let any of the Residential Advisers know that we’re keeping a wild animal in the dorms. I can’t afford being kicked out of student housing. So we have to keep him hidden from the higher ups.” Wasabi pointed right at Ruddiger as he said this to emphasize his point. “Got it?”
Varian was surprised. He didn’t realize that Ruddiger could be such a risk to Wasabi. He also wasn’t expecting anyone to go to such trouble just for him and the realization that this man was willing to risk his home just to keep Varian happy was humbling to say the least.
“Got it” he repeated back, vowing to himself not to let that happen.
“Great! Now that that’s settled, here’s the pizza if you’re hungry.’ Wasabi sat the box down on the table. “I’ve also laid out some clean clothes for you to sleep in, they’re on the couch, and I’m going to go downstairs and throw the laundry in the washing machine.” With that he picked up a basket full of clothes and walked towards the door.
“You also have a machine that washes clothes!? Can I see it?” Varian asked, his curiosity piqued once again.
“Sure, we can go down together when it’s time to put them in the dryer. That gives you some time to eat and change clothes.” Wasabi struggled a bit to open the door as his hands were full, but no sooner did he get it open, was he then stopped by Varian’s voice.
“Hey, Wasabi.”
“Hmm?” Wasabi turned around and stood in the doorway to look at him.
Varian was shuffling his feet and looking downwards trying to form the right words.
“Thanks. For everything, for helping me, I mean. Not a whole lot of people would go out their way to do that and you didn’t have to, so, ..thank you.” Varian looked up at those last two words, emphasizing how much he truly appreciated all that was being done for him.
“Naw, don’t mention it. After all, what are friends for?”
Varian didn’t know the answer to that question. He had never had friends before; not real ones. Not ones that would go through any pains to help you out because helping was just the right thing to do. But apparently this was a rhetorical question, as Wasabi only stood around long enough to give Varian a smile and then turned to leave, closing the door behind him.
Varian stood still for a few moments, looking at the space where the older teen had stood, mulling over what had just happened. But soon enough Ruddiger was getting tired of being held and was struggling to escape his arms, distracting him from his thoughts. He put the raccoon down and then went to change into the clothes Wasabi had given him.
They were far too big on him. The short britches had a drawstring to tighten them with but even when pulled as tight as they would go they hung loose upon his hips. The jersey was no better. It hung down to his knees and the sleeves went several inches past his wrists, completely covering his hands. But he dealt with ill fitting clothes for most of his life. Usually just re-purposing his father’s old hand-me-downs, re-patching or hemming as needed. So Varian just rolled up the sleeves, deciding to make do; at least these clothes were well maintained and didn’t need any repairing.
He then turned his attention to the food. He had heard of pizza before, it was apparently popular in Italy according to the sailors and traveling merchants he sometimes talked to. A must have if one were to visit say Naples, not that Varian ever figured he would. He had never traveled further than Vardaros, a city outside of Corona’s walls that his dad would sometimes go to market to.
The pizza consisted of flat bread covered in olives, onions, and entirely too much cheese that overflowed in stringy pieces when he picked up one of the pre-cut slices. He took an experimental bite. Under the cheese there was a type of red sauce spiced with garlic and other herbs. It wasn’t bad, though not what he had been expecting. He curled up on the sofa, sitting cross legged, and eating the rest of the slice, pulling off pieces of the runny cheese that was falling off to give to Ruddigger. Who grabbed them from his hands and gulped them down eagerly.
After finishing a slice Varian decided he had had enough. Ruddiger apparently had not and ran up to the table to grab his own slice from the box. Varian watched the gluttonous raccoon with amusement but then soon found himself yawning. He stretched, feeling sleep catching up to him after the day’s events. This, though, seemed to be a signal to Ruddgier, who immediately dropped the piece of pizza he was eating and sprinted back to the window.
“Ruddigger?” Varian called out in both confusion and alarm. Worried that his pet would leave so soon after they had just been reunited, he got up from the couch and followed.
However Ruddiger only went as far as the window sill. He picked up something in his mouth and then turned back around and trotted back to where Varian was standing, proudly holding his head up expecting Varian to take the item from him.
“Whatcha got there buddy?” Varian asked as Ruddiger deposited a yellow bit of rock into his hand. Like a puppy dog who just fetched a stick and was entirely too proud of itself for completing such a simple task, he sat back and eagerly waited for his master’s approval.
Varian’s heart skipped a beat. It was a piece of amber, the amber. It was roughly four inches in length that tapered to a sharp point. It’s sides were uneven and craggy but it was entirely flat and smooth on one end, as if it had been cut. But the amber couldn’t be cut, unless….
Varian’s pulse began to race as his mind ran through the possibilities. It must have come through the portal with him, which meant that the portal itself must have cut the piece off when it closed. Which made sense as it wasn’t a physical force that ruptured the surface of the unbreakable rock but an absence of space itself. What this meant for his father and how he could go about implementing this knowledge was invaluable and the first real break though he had since the accident. Now if only he could get back to his lab…
Varian stopped his run away thoughts and looked around at the unfamiliar apartment. But he wasn’t at his lab, or Corona, he was here. And he didn’t even know where here actually was, or how to get back, or even if he could get back.
Varian slumped back onto the sofa, tears filling his eyes. The full enormity of what had happened to him finally sinking in without anything else to distract himself with. He would never admit it to anyone, but he was scared. Scared that he may have lost his dad for good. He couldn’t stop the tears now. Varian couldn’t tell you how many times he had cried since that fateful snowstorm but for a while he had believed he had no more tears left to shed. Apparently he was wrong, just like how he was wrong about so many other things in his life.
He wiped his eyes and laid upon the couch, turning his head away from the door and curling up in a fetal position. He didn’t want Wasabi coming through the door and seeing him awake and distressed. He no longer cared about washing machines and pizza and whatever other wonders this world may hold, he just wanted to sleep and to dream about happier times in his life. Lucky for him the sofa was cushiony and soft, far more comfortable then what he had been sleeping on for the past year or so, and it therefore lulled him to sleep soon enough and he was blessed with the sweet relief of unconsciousness.

Present day Cleaning Supplies Information
Despite keeping the business running, one of the various troubles any industry faces is that of keeping their place sufficient. Huge and privately owned businesses the equivalent habitually choose to enroll a mechanical cleaning association to do the untidy occupation for them. This article intends to give mechanical cleaning supplies information to the people who are meaning to meander into the cleaning business and for the people who may essentially have to comprehend what cleaning supplies they may need to do it without any other person's assistance. Similarly, you can find cleaning information on explicit locales or you may get some data about explicit things.
Disinfectant cleaners are undeniable necessities when cleaning any establishment. You should buy non-staining, color free, and alcohol free, cleaners that are convincing in discarding ordinary present day microorganisms and contaminations, for instance, E. coli, salmonella, Staphylococcus Aureus, Mycobacterium Tuberculosis, and Corona disease. Disinfectant cleaners are required and feasible especially during scenes like outrageous extreme respiratory problem, Swine Flu, and Bird Flu.
Hydrogen Peroxide based conditions used for dispensing with oil are moreover a good extension to a lot of cleaning supplies. Cleaners with this compound are amazingly convincing in disposing of troublesome stains from glass, floor covers and upholstery, tiles and grout, and on restrooms and sinks. Regardless, you may have to test it first in a little disguised spot so you to avoid irksome results.
Checking room aromas doesn't actually help the room look clean, anyway it gives a decent mental effect of an unblemished tendency. So applying a room deodorizer is furthermore a shrewd idea ensuing to cleaning.
The choice of equipment used in mechanical cleaning generally depends upon the size of the spot cleaned, the expected dangers, for instance, electrical wires, and such a material cleaned. For tiled floors, electric scrubbers that oversee cleaning plan are regularly used, while ground-breaking vacuums and air movers are for carpets. For Windows, the reliably strong wiper and wash materials are up 'til now used in any case some mechanical cleaning associations have contributed on window washing systems that can accomplish the work capably PPE provider.
Most current cleaning associations need their gathering to experience planning so they would be outfitted with the capacities, and data on the most ideal approach to accomplish the work safely. I had a rip roaring time of it last night lads. Under the cut is a LONG IRL ISSUE of me spending the entire night on the floor of my bathroom trying to deal with a flood bc of the goddamn rain. Also i really need to clean behind my toilet more yuck.
In an un-fucking-foreseen weather pattern it has been raining a LOT lately in LA. We got a reprieve from it and I thought ah. How lovely. Not only will work from home be more enjoyable but I can go for walks again or just step outside and get some sun.
But that first week it started really pouring (right before Safer at Home went into play) my bathroom flooded from a leak. I don’t live in the best built houses. Basically I live in a shack behind my geriatric landlady’s house. And aside from dealing with bugs and just...kind of a lot of dirt bc its poorly built...its pretty chill vibes here. I don’t have to pay for parking or utilites and my rent is at least 500$ cheaper than it is to live in a studio anywhere else in LA. So i take the lumps when I get them. Carpet beetles? Well I’ll try to take care of that. The sink breaks? Well I’ll try to take care of that. There’s no glass part in the kitchen window?? I guess keep the blinds closed??? (there’s a screen in place of the sliding glass and I still can’t get my land lady to remember to fix it??? Its not pressing but during the summer its a lot)
So because of that first rain I went to home depot. Got some silicone caulk. But this was the same day as our studio sent us all to work from home. So I stopped by the grocery store and basically went on lockdown. But I realized I forgot a caulk gun so I ordered one online. And it rained again before I got a chance to use the caulk. So I had to clean up a flooded bathroom twice.
Then after that last flood I put down some calk where I saw what I assumed was the only visible crack.
I was wrong. Last night at around 3am, because it had been raining for a better portion of the day and it was fixing to get worse (the forecast has it raining for the rest of the week), my bathroom not only flooded from a completely new spot but basically everything except the toilet had water seeping through it. So I spent about three hours trying to get enough water off the ground while it was pouring in so I could lay down more caulk (which is supposed to go on a dry surface but hahaa). Then I everytime I think I’ve sealed it would find a new place to run up from under. So at around 7am I call my landlady and I had already had two really good cries at this point. I was like I don’t know who to call for this but we need to call someone because I physically cannot do this anymore. If you bring someone over I’ll hide in my room and disinfect the house afterwards.
So she calls her daughter lmfao. I guess they thought the pipe had broken? But IDK what she was gonna do if that had happened. So they go Ah. Its the rain from outside. That happened in our house as well.
So we spent the next idk half hour?? in LITERALLY DUMPING RAIN trying to dig a trench like its fucking world war 2 because they never thought to put a rain gutter on the edge of the house. So the ground outside the bathroom was a lake of mud and rain water just pooling against the house. I like....can’t even imagine how much mold this is going to cause. I can already see the bathroom inside is visibly sinking (like I said. not the best built house)
We get to a point where we have some tiles leaning against the wall of the house like a tiny little roof and added some sand?? that quickly turned to mud against the wall and we dug a trench to drain away (there’s a tree in the backyard that was dumping all its berries on the ground and it was like that video in france I think? Where the guy filled his tub with gummies?).
And then they were like “Okay we’ll see how that works. Go inside and have some tea so you don’t catch corona”
But inside was still flooded so I STILL at now 8a had to clean up a flooded bathroom. And at this point the flood had seeped into the room next to the bathroom which luckily isn’t my bedroom but its where I keep my prints and clothes.
Its still not FIXED but there’s not as much coming out. Its been the same level of very small puddles (like if you got out of the shower but don’t have a mat) for the past few hours so I think I’m OKAY for now unless it starts dumping rain again.
My back is in SHATTERS. And of course I still have to work. And the first few messages I got were really sarcastic and I’m like...wow it would be cool to have a director that wasn’t made of 1000000% sarcasm for once.
Like its not a normal renting situation and 80% of the time I have a VERY good deal living here but times like this are already hard to deal with without adding on a global pandemic on top of it that keeps us from calling anyone to come over.
#I'm exhausted#I'm in so much actual pain#lluckily my years of art school and general insomnia mean I'm not dying from lack of sleep#I just very much want to sleep tho

This is the story of how I died.... oh wow, sorry, that was way more intense then I thought it was going to be. D-Don't stop reading! This is actually a really fun story, I swear!
Marrrrcoooo, hurry up!! Get to the part about me already!
Umm, right, sorry Star. Okay, let's see, where was I? *ahem* Once upon a time....
Ugh, boring! Do you want to put the readers to sleep? Start off by telling them something really cool, something that's gonna draw them in. Like a... a monster fight!
Hey, who's telling this story here?
Sorry.
Okay anyways, this is the story of a beautiful young princess with magic golden hair that had the power to heal the sick and wounded-
That's me!
Star, shhh! For years, she lived locked away in a tower, hidden deep in the woods, kept there by an evil and controlling woman, who wanted nothing more than to horde the girl's gift for herself.
Yeah, cause she's a meanie!!
That and so she could live forever.
And also cause she's a meanie.
And the name of this princess was Rapunzel... I mean, Starunzel! Ugh, I mean Star.
Geez, Marco. You really don't know what you're doing, do you?
No, I'm sorry.
Aw, that's okay. How about we just start by showing what happened the day we first met so we don't confuse the readers anymore than we already have.
Yeah okay, that sounds good.
Great!
Soooo, how do we do that exactly?
Simple. We use the mystic and magical page break.
Page wha-
…
Star was excited, practically racing through her chores that morning, cleaning every inch of the well-kept tower she called home. What would normally take her fifteen minutes to complete, today only took her a mere ten, which was quite the accomplishment for her dragging around seventy feet of long, blond, and sometimes unruly hair wherever she went. Though the downside of this was of course, that she now had the rest of the day to herself with literally nothing to do forcing her to find some other way to fight off the horrible enemy she was in almost constant battle with...boredom, but today she didn't really mind too much, her excitement over the special day helping to keep her mind occupied.
Once she was finished with the last of the cleaning, she looked around at the neat and tidy room in satisfaction, grinning with pride as every last inch of the tower seemed to be sparkling. “There, perfect, if I do say so myself,” she said boastfully, adding, “which I do.” She giggled at her own joke, while putting away her broom.
“Hey Janna!” she called to the ceiling of the tower, which was dark and not very well-lit. “Jan! Come on Janna, wake up,” she tried again, with still no reply. She frowned, before grabbing a strand of blond hair, flinging it out like some sort of lasso, where it wrapped around a lever that was normally just out of reach for her. She gave her hair a yank, pulling the lever down and opening up one of the windows above, lighting up the scaffolding of the tower, as well as the small purple bat currently snoozing up there.
Janna flinched as her small, fluffy body was encased in the hideous light, keeping her eyes glued shut, as she wrapping her wings tightly around herself to shield her from the intense beams, before going back to sleep. Star blinked, before groaning as her only friend ignored her, her cheeks puffing up cutely in anger. She wasted no time as she grabbed a bigger strand of hair and threw it up toward the beam the small bat was sleeping under. It flew over the beam before wrapping around the beam next to it, Star now able to use her hair as a rope as she climbed her own blond locks up to where Janna slept.
Once she was next to her animal friend, she gently poked her with her finger over and over again waiting for a reaction, a wide smile spread across her face. “Come on, sleepyhead,” she said softly, as she tried to gently awaken her bat friend.. “Wakey-wakey.”
Finally, Janna sighed, unfolding her wings and giving her a blank and tired stare, clearly wanting to know why she was being woken up so early in the morning. “Now don't give me that look, Janna,” Star defended herself, seeing the intent behind her friend's piercing green eyes. “It's not my fault you stayed up all night.” She crossed one arm across her chest, while the other still had to be dedicated to holding onto her hair to keep from falling, turning away from the bat with a pout, closing her eyes and refusing to look at her.
But after a few seconds, she slowly peeked open an eye and could see out of the corner of her eye that the look on the bat's face persisted, a small scowl on her fuzzy features. Star groaned in exasperation, before angrily stating, “Okay fine! I know you sleep during the day and everything, but c'mon, tomorrow is my birthday and I don't want to spend it all alone.” She gave the bat a pouting look, her lip quivering cutely knowing Janna couldn't resist the stare she had spent the last fourteen years perfecting.
Janna gave a small huff, rolling her green eyes before flying off of her perch and to the floor with a look of annoyance.
“Yay!” Star cheered, pumping a fist into the air, as she slid down her hair to the ground, excited her friend would be with her on the very big day. Once she was on the ground, she asked her friend, “So what should we do first?” She didn't even bother to wait for a reply as she began listing off potential activities to fill time in a nearly sing-song voice. “Playing guitar, knitting, cooking, puzzles, darts, baking, oh I guess that's probably the same as cooking, huh? Haha, umm, well we could also try some pottery or ventriloquy or candle making, I could try painting if I could find a spot that I haven't already painted on. Hmm? Oh, oh, oh, or we could re-re-reread those books I have, what do you think?”
Once she was done, Janna just gave her a one of her bored looks that said, 'I-don't-really-care'.
“Huh, you're right,” Star said thoughtfully. “We'll do them all!” she declared at the top of her lungs, pointing a finger in the air, dramatically.
Janna just sighed again, thinking it was way too early to be doing anything right now.
…
Meanwhile, in the nearby kingdom of Corona, the whole town was teeming with excitement and lively chatter on that lovely morning. Townsfolk were already going about their daily work with more vigor than usual and the streets were filled with the sound of children's laughter and general merriment. Everyone was in high spirit, the air itself practically electrified with jubilant energy, as all were happily anticipating the festival that would be the following day. Preparations had been underway for weeks, streamers and decorations hung up all over the busy streets, fluttering freely in the breeze and proudly showing off the beautiful logo of the kingdom: a purple flag with a bright, golden sun. This served as a constant reminder to the townsfolk of what was to come and the anticipation many were feeling was close to bursting at this point.
But one such individual was free of any feelings of merriment that plagued the rest of the kingdom, as he looked down on the people below with an impassive look. He was more focused on the work that had to be done to care about some silly festival and besides he would be long gone by that point.
He stood high on the roof of the large castle in the center of town, keeping a close eye on the guards that patrolled the perimeter, none the wiser to the teen's presence and he smiled to himself. Idiots. He took a moment from his precarious position to stretch, mentally and physically preparing himself for what was about to happen, letting out a calming breath. The boy had tanned skin and brown, spiked hairs (which he kept styled at all times) brown eyes and a mole just under his left cheek. He wore a white long-sleeved shirt with a red vest over on top of it and a brown belt hugging his mid-section firmly. The sleeves were rolled up to above his elbows on his shirt and a satchel hung loosely over his shoulder. He had on light brown pants, which were tucked into black, hunting boots.
A gentle breeze blew up against him, causing a shiver to crawl up his spine which he ignored. It was bound to happen being this high up. All he had to say was thank goodness he didn't have a fear of heights. Behind him, he heard a strangled squeak and he turned to see his two accomplices behind him, one tall and thin and the other short and fat. The thin one was tightly hugging his partner in a death grip, shaking as he looked at the ground below. “Do we have to be this high up?” the teen asked in a nasally voice.
“Can't be helped, Alfonso,” the boy in red shrugged. “This is the easiest way in. The higher up we are the less the guards look.”
“Marco's right, Al,” the third boy, Ferguson, agreed, pushing his friend off of him, causing him to shriek in fear and Marco cringed, glad they were too high up to be heard by the passing guards. “The last thing we need is to get caught stealing from royalty,” the chubby one added.
“Yeah and with that in mind we better hurry, just in case someone does happen to look up and see us,” the thief in red, Marco Diaz, said, before he recklessly jumped off the side of the roof, sliding down its tiled side and landing on the side of one of the towers with a barely audible thud. Ferguson followed quickly after, with an anxious and fear stricken Alfonso following hesitantly after, trying to ignore the long, fatal fall beneath him.
The three boys began making their way slowly and carefully around the side of the tower, leaping from tower to tower, Marco in the lead of his friends, jumping and maneuvering his way around expertly. This wasn't his first time stealing from another person, but his was the biggest and most satisfying job of his criminal career. If he pulled this job off right he would be set for life, even after splitting it three ways with his cohorts.
He did question bringing these two along, their skills as thieves not anything too impressive, but he couldn't pull this job off on his own and they were the only ones he trusted enough to help him, knowing anyone else would stab him in the back and take off with the goods in a heartbeat. He was the one who had gotten them into this life after all, asking them to tag along with him on jobs when he had been just getting his start as a thief. He could tell that they weren't too interested in it in the same way he was, going along with his schemes more out of obligation from being his friends than actual want to engage in criminal acts. Still, they never turned down any of his offers and this job was no different, so he was fine with cutting the share with his two long-time partners.
The three finally reached their desired destination, Alfonso at this point panting and shuddering all over with fear. Marco and Ferguson quickly opened a small hatch in the roof, revealing the throne room, where about a dozen guards stood around a small pedestal. On it lay the object the three thieves had been seeking, the lost princess's crown, lying preserved and safe on a soft, purple pillow. It was made of pure gold, intricately crafted with white diamond's embedded into its top, as well as several rubies that made up the bottom half of the priceless prize.
Marco took a moment to marvel at the beautiful crown, while his two companions began tying a long, thick rope down beside him. He released a slow, breathy sigh, still unable to look away from the golden headpiece. But he was quickly pulled back into the moment as he felt Ferguson and Alfonso now tying the other end of the rope around his waist. He lifted up his arms allowing them to do their job much easier and waited patiently for them to finish. The two took their time making sure that the rope would be secure but also cause no discomfort to their friend, tying it as tight as they dared without hurting him.
Once the rope was properly in place, Ferguson and Alfonso began lowering Marco down into the throne room, making sure to keep a firm and steady hold on the rope as the thief was inched closer and closer to his prize. Marco took slow, even breaths, trying to stay as quiet as possible, not wanting to alert any of the guards to his presence. The large chamber was so unnervingly silent that if a pin were to suddenly drop Marco was sure it would startle every guard in the room. He honestly wondered how someone could tolerate being in the room all day, every day, as their source of earning. It seemed awfully boring. And to the adventurous, thrill-seeking Marco that was like a fate worse than death.
The young thief quickly pushed aside his racing thoughts, focusing instead on the guards themselves, his highly trained eye on alert for any notable or abnormal movements from the bunch that would indicate that they had been discovered. But the guards around him were none the wiser to his presence, their backs to the young thief as their eyes alertly scanned only directly in front of them.
Finally, the boy in red came to a sudden and jerky stop, the pedestal and crown now only a few inches below him and easily within arms reach. He smiled to himself, but made sure to keep a weary eye on the guards as he quickly snatched up the crown, before tucking it safely away in his satchel. So far so good, he thought to himself, giving the rope a tug to let them know to pull him up. We might actually pull this off without a hitch.
But it seemed the boy had spoken (or rather 'thought') too soon, as he heard a small yell of none other than Alfonso, which sounded like a bombshell going off in the once deafening silence of the throne room, every guard jumping at the echoing noise. Before Marco could react, the boy felt the rope go slack and he was suddenly sent catapulting downward, as they boys above him, for whatever reason, lost their hold. Marco felt his stomach drop and he let out a small yell himself, as his body rushed toward the ground. He crashed into the pedestal on the way down, knocking to over, where it hit the floor with a loud bang.
Somehow, Marco was saved from the same happening to him, as Ferguson and Alfonso must have gotten a hold of the rope again, as he was yanked to a stop, his face near centimeters from the ground, the tips of his bangs touching the tiled floor. But all the commotion, of course, attracted a lot of attention, every guard swerving on their heels to see the young criminal suspended precariously from the rope, all of them in shock and disgust at the illegal action that was clearly taking place.
“Hey, stop thief!” one of them shouted angrily, as he and the others gritted their teeth and held out their spears, the sharp tips pointed directly at Marco.
“Pull me up!” Marco shouted above him in a panic, trying to somehow maneuver out of the way of the deadly weapons that now surrounded him on all sides. But the two thieves didn't have to be told twice as they began frantically pulling Marco back up, the dangling thief in just seconds out of the guards (and more importantly their spears) reach and he let a sigh of relief. The guards watched helpless as the intruder was hauled back onto the roof, their anger growing as they shouted up at him, while several ran to go get reinforcements.
Once Marco's was safely back on the roof with his two friends and his feet were once again planted on solid ground, he shot a glare at the two, demanding in a breathless and nerve-wracked tone, “What the heck was that?! Why'd you drop me, now the whole castle knows we're here?!” He began working on untying the thick and intricate knots, tugging relentlessly at the coarse rope in frustration.
“Sorry, Marco, something landed on my shoulder and it scared me,” Alfonso apologized sheepishly. “But it was totally a spider or something that was about to bite me,” he quickly added in his defense.
“It was a pigeon and no it wasn't,” Ferguson corrected, rolling his eyes at his friend.
Marco's eyes narrowed at the nasally teen. “So you just jeopardized one of the most important jobs of our career over a stupid bird,” Marco said irritably, the annoyance in his stony gaze unmistakable.
“Uh, apparently,” Alfonso muttered guiltily.
The boy in red face-palmed, letting out a infuriated growl as he dragged his hand slowly down his face. But he recovered quickly, as he said to the two in a much calmer tone, “Okay, then, time for 'Plan B'. We need to get out of here and fast. Let's go.”
He left no room for arguing as he began making his way down the castletop with no regard for his safety, more focused on getting away quickly than bothering to take things slow. He hopped from tower to tower and ran across perilous scaffolds without even looking to make sure his feet were in a good position to do so. Ferguson and Alfonso, to their credit, kept up with his quick and reckless pace, though the latter looked terrified the whole time, fighting off the panic attack that was slowly building up inside him.
Eventually the three were able to make it off of the castle, jumping from one of the balcony's onto the roof of one of the nearby houses, Alfonso stumbling slightly and looking paler than a ghost from the long drop. Marco wasted no time though, as he slid down the roof, landing on a nearby awning, doing a flip in the air, before tucking himself into a roll as he hit the stony sidewalk. Ferguson and Alfonso, on the other hand, carefully made their way over to the side of the building, dropping down onto the awning, before sliding down the poles using them to hold the thing up.
Marco rose to his feet, waiting until his companions were both down before leading them into a race through town, several guards already racing out of the gates of the castle and chasing after them, spears in hand. Marco dodged his way around the traffic on the streets, civilians screaming and frantically moving out of the way to avoid being knocked over, in total confusion and disarray over what was happening around them.
Soon the gates to the city were in sight, the bridge that would lead them into the forest and their freedom within reach. Marco smiled, before slowing his pace enough to allow Ferguson and Alfonso to run past him, knocking a cart of apples over, ignoring the shout of alarm from the seller, causing fruit to tumble into the road behind them. He hoped this would stall the guards long enough to give them enough time to escape.
He was rewarded with the sound of a scream and a crash behind him and the boy picked up his pace even more. As he and his companions ran out of the gates to town and across the long bridge, they all began laughing in victory, all quite overjoyed with their success.
“We did it, guys!” Marco shouted at the top of his lungs. He let out a loud chuckle, before adding, “Today is a very good day!”
…
“Today is a very good day, Janna!” Star stated to her bat friend, one musical montage and several dozen time-wasting activities later, still just as giddy and hyper as earlier. Nothing seemed to be able to deter Star's enthusiasm that day, not even the dreaded clutches of boredom, but unfortunately Star's peppiness was not shared as Janna just lay on the girl's shoulder looking utterly dissatisfied with life. But the young blond didn't notice this either, as she looked up at her newly constructed masterpiece with increased satisfaction. “I mean just look at that beautiful painting, I'm a true artist,” Star bragged proudly, puffing out her chest and striking a dramatic pose. “When mom sees this she'll be sure to let me go see the floating lights.”
Janna's gaze slowly shifted to the picture, not sure if she quite agreed. It was a terrible looking stick version of Star with goofily large eyes looking up at small white dots that Janna assumed were supposed to be the floating lights. And, because it was Star, she had also needlessly added in a lopsided skull and a smudged picture of a spider wearing a top hat floating in the air around her. All in all the pitiful excuse for art looked like it had been drawn by a four year old kid, not a soon to be fifteen year old teenager.
It was almost unbelievable that even after all these years living alone inside a tower with nothing but time to practice Star still hadn't gained even a speck of talent in painting whatsoever and the bat would have bet a fortune that the only thing Star's mother was sure to be when she saw it, was confused. Janna barely understood what she was looking at, there was no way her human friend's mother would know what it was supposed to be, as well.
“Well, what do you think?” Star asked, looking to her only friend in anticipation. This was when she finally took notice of her bat friend's clear difference of opinion, adding shamefacedly, “Uhh, sorry I didn't put you in the picture, too. But I kinda ran out of room.” The nocturnal mammal would have been offended she hadn't been added onto the picture (terrible as it was), if she actually cared. All she wanted was just to go back to sleep, unable to stop thinking of all the precious daylight that was being wasted. So Janna didn't say a word about how awful it looked and what a crime against true artists and art it was, instead she just shrugged and gave her a look that said, We-done-now?
Star sighed dramatically. “Fine, you can go back to napping,” Star said rolling her eyes, unable to believe Janna's lack of enthusiasm in all of this. How could she even consider napping on such a monumental occasion? Didn't she realize how amazing and life-changing this was?
But apparently she didn't, as the purple bat just flew up to the ceiling, hanging upside down from one of the pillars that was still in shadow, tucking her wings around her as she drifted off to sleep. Star tried to contain her disappointment as she muttered more to herself than Janna, “Mom will be back soon anyway. Don't want her to know I've been hiding a pet from her all these years.”
As if on cue, Star heard a call from outside the window, a familiar voice that the blond instantly knew had to be her mother's. “Star! Are you there, dear? Let down your hair, please?”
“Coming mom!” Star yelled, as she raced over to the window, opening the shutters, before looking down at her mother, waiting patiently below. Lady Eclipsa as she was known to be, had poofy teal hair and a flowing purple dress with small black dress shoes.
“Star, you know I don't like being kept waiting,” her mother called up in a warning tone. Star tried not to let this get to her as she hung her hair on a small hook that hung down from the top of the windowsill, before gathering up the rest and quickly flinging it over the side. Her long, blond locks fell gracefully down the entire length of the tower, nearly touching the ground when she was done. Eclipsa moved out of the way to avoid getting hit by the make-shift rope made of her daughter's own incredibly long hair.
Once in reach, Star's mother quickly grabbed the end of the blond locks that were now nearly glowing in the sunlight, and raising it up to be used it as a little foothold for herself. She stepped onto this, before waiting for her daughter to begin pulling her up. And Star wasted no time in doing this, heaving back on her hair and the heavy form that now weighed it down immensely. But Star had had plenty of practice at this and was able to slowly but surely began pulling Eclipsa up the side of the tower, with little to no problem whatsoever, her experience in pulling things up by her hair alone a much more accomplished skill than her artistic ability.
She grunted as she pulled the last bit of distance needed for her mother to step onto the window frame and then safely inside the tower. Star panted heavily as moved to hug her mother, saying in a tired but cheerful voice, “Welcome back, mom.”
Eclipsa though just handed her the basket she had brought back, before stepping past her, not even noticing her daughter's show of affection. “Excellent work, Star. Though I think you could have done that a bit faster, hmm?” her mother commented, as she began gazing at herself in the mirror, messing with her hair to make sure it was still the way she wanted it.
Star looked hurtfully down at the basket for a moment before setting it down on the nearest table, racing over to her mother, hopping up and down on the balls of her feet to try and contain her excitement. She quickly asked in a hinting tone, “So mom, do you know what tomorrow is?”
“I believe it's Saturday,” her mother replied flatly, still examining herself closely in the mirror. Star shook her head saying, “No, no that's not what I meant.”
But her mother once again wasn't really listening, her eyes widening as she spotted a gray hair hidden in with the mess of blue locks around it. “Star, dear, we can talk in a moment, first I would love it if you would sing for your mother,” Eclipsa said, turning to her daughter with a small smile.
“Oh right, of course,” Star said, quickly jumping at the task, rushing over to get everything ready, running and grabbing the chair and stepstool needed, setting them in front of each other. Eclipsa just watched all of this with a blank stare, following her daughter's movements as she sat herself down in the chair Star had brought her. The blond grabbed the hairbrush before running back over to her mom, handing her the brush and laying a thick portion of her hair on her lap, as she plopped down onto her own small seat.
She cleared her throat before singing as quickly as she could the song her mother had taught her. “Flower gleam and glow, let your power shine. Make the clock reverse bring back what once was mine. Heal what has been hurt, change the fates design. Save what has been lost, bring back what once was mine.”
As Star did this, her hair lit up golden, trailing all the way down the entire length of her mane. Eclipsa hummed along with the fast pace of the song, seemingly unaffected by how quickly her daughter was going, as she just ran the brush a few times through the glowing locks. The woman felt a deep powerful magic coursing through her veins, a wonderful feeling overcoming her as all at once all her ailments and aches were reversed and healed.
Once Star was done, she quickly jumped up from the chair, grabbing her mother's arm in a tight hug, as she quickly began talking a mile a minute, “So now that that's done, I was going to tell you that tomorrow is kind of a big day and since I know you won't be able to guess, I'm just gonna go ahead and tell you that's its my birthday!!”
She smiled widely at her mom as she finished, but her mother didn't seem to react much at all, as she merely said, “Really, so soon?”
“Well, it has been a whole year,” Star mumbled under her breath, to her it had felt like she had been waiting forever for this day to come.
“Star, you know what we talked about with the mumbling,” her mother scolded, giving her a look, and Star remembered immediately all the previous lectures she had been given about how it was undignified for a young lady to whisper things under her breath and not speak loudly and clearly enough to be heard.
“Sorry, mom,” Star hastily apologized, making sure her voice was now loud enough her mother could easily hear it.
“It's alright dear,” her mother said, giving her a small hug, before walking toward the kitchen and pawing through the bowl of fruit, looking for something to eat. “So is there anything you wanted for your birthday?” she casually mentioned.
Star sucked in a breath. This would be the hard part, convincing her mom, but she decided to just go for it. “Well, I was thinking,” Star said as casually and innocently as possible. “Since I'm turning fifteen tomorrow I thought that it would be a good idea... to maybe go outside.”
Star had a wide, awkward smile on her face as she waited for her mother's reaction. Eclipsa stilled, dropping the apple she had chosen back into the bowl, as she turned to her daughter in surprise. “What?” she asked, shocked.
“Not for forever, of course,” Star quickly added, seeing her mother's concern. She chuckled nervously saying, “I mean that would be... crazy. But just long enough for you to take me to go see the floating lights.”
Now Eclipsa looked even more startled, asking hesitantly, “Floating... lights?”
Star could tell her mom was starting to think she had gone insane so she quickly clarified, “Yeah, y'know the big glowing lights that fill the sky, every year, on my birthday.”
“You mean... the stars?” Eclipsa said slowly and Star let out a sharp, frustrated sigh.
“No, not the stars, mom. These are different. Here, let me show you,” Star quickly used a length of her hair to pull open a lever on the wall, opening a hatch which sent a flood of light cascading on her drawing, highlighting against the rest of the musty tower. “See,” Star said, pointing at the painting. “These things. The big bright things that always appear out of nowhere on my birthday.”
Eclipsa looked at the painting in silence for a few moments, her face completely unreadable. “I... see,” was all she managed to reply, trying to keep her face calm. She turned to her daughter asking, “And your sure you didn't just dream them? “No, I didn't,” Star said defensively. “Have you seriously never noticed them before?” When she received no reply she quickly waved this off. “Whatever, it doesn't matter. I see them every year, mom, and I just... really want to know what they are. I want to see them, up close, in person.”
“Why do you care so much about these stars, darling?” Eclipsa asked, sounding amused at her daughter's bizarre interest in something seemingly ordinary.
Star's cheeks puffed up some in anger. “First of all, they're not stars. And second of all, I don't know. I just feel like they're meant for me somehow, y'know.” Star shrugged not sure how quite to put it into words.
Eclipsa grew very quiet after that, watching her daughter closely as her eyes glazed over in thought. This was very bad. Very, very bad and she knew it. She had to do something. She couldn't let her flower discover the truth. She had to find some way to get her to stay. But how.
“Now, now, darling you know the rules about going outside,” she began, stepping closer to her daughter.
Star began to fiddle with a strand of her hair, nervously. “Yes, I know but, I thought maybe we could break the rules, just this once.” She gave her mom a sheepish smile, hoping that this would somehow convince her to let her go, though her optimism was beginning to fade.
And to Star's dismay, Eclipsa shook her head, before saying, “The rules exist for a reason, Star. To keep you safe. Do you have any idea how dangerous it is out there?”
“Well no,” Star admitted, but quickly tried to argue, saying, “But I-”
“Exactly, dear, you don't know,” Eclipsa continued, as she walked over to her, placing her hands softly on her shoulders. “But I do. The world outside if full of dangers you couldn't even begin to imagine and you are just not ready to face them yet. You're too naive and the people out there would take advantage of that.”
Star looked sadly at her bare feet. “Not to mention what they would do if they discovered the power your hair holds,” Eclipsa continued softly, running a hand through Star's hair once.
The blond felt her heart thumping a bit out of control, fear filling her being. Her mother had told her stories of what had happened when she was just a baby. How everyone had wanted to cut her hair and have the power all for themselves, even trying to take her away from her mom and she shuddered at the thought.
Eclipsa pulled Star close in a comforting embrace, as she said worriedly, “I couldn't bare to see you get hurt. It would hurt me if that happened, you know that right?”
“Yes,” Star said sadly, feeling all the fight and hope drain from her, leaving her feeling empty.
“Then you are going to listen to your mother and stay put?” Eclipsa asked, waiting to hear the answer.
Star hesitated, but finally sighing saying again, “Yes.”
“That's my girl,” Eclipsa said, pulling out of the hug to cup her daughter's face in her hands. She gave her gentle kiss on the forehead. But as she pulled away, she saw the pitiful look on her daughter's face and added, “Trust me, Star. I always knows what's best for you.”
Star just gave her a half-hearted smile, as her mom gave her cheek a soft pat. “Well I must be going again,” Eclipsa said, as she quickly retrieved her basket and then climbed back up onto the window, before taking hold of the still hanging hair. She turned back to her daughter one last time before saying, “I will see you in a bit, my dear. I love you.”
With that, Eclipsa quickly began descending her daughter's hair. Star stood perfectly still, waiting until she couldn't feel the tug against her scalp anymore, letting her know her mother was now on the ground and probably heading out of the clearing and into the big, bright world Star was forbidden to see. Once she was sure her mother was out of ear shot, she loudly huffed, flopping herself down on the ground and crossing her arms in front of her, childishly.
She just fumed angrily to herself for a few moments, muttering comments about being trapped there forever, bored out of her mind, and calling her mom a poophead. Finally, Janna flew down and landed on her shoulder, giving her a look with her wide, brown eyes.
Star sighed, rubbing at her eyes as she agreed, “Yeah, that definitely could have gone better.”
…
“Hurry their gaining!” Marco shouted over to his two comrades, looking back to make sure they were still with him. To his relief, they were, Ferguson and Alfonso just barely managing to keep up, both panting immensely. But none of them had time to stop as, not a short distance away, the roar of approaching horses could be heard, growing louder by the second.
Marco did his best to evade their pursuers, going between trees that would be too narrow for horses to follow, jumping over fallen trunks, and sliding down steep inclines, but nothing seemed to work. Nothing seemed to be slowing any of them down any and Marco was quickly running out of ideas. If something didn't change soon, they would definitely be captured.
Suddenly, the three thieves all came to an abrupt stop as they reached a dead end. Marco looked up at the rocky cliff in front of them, quickly judging the distance, before turning back to Ferguson and Alfonso. “Okay quick, boost me up!”
The two shared a look with one another, looking unsure. “What?” Marco asked, seeing their hesitation.
“You sure you'll remember to pull us up when you're done?” Ferguson asked, in a half-accusing manner.
Marco looked hurt at the comment. “What? Of course I will. You two are my best friends.” The two still looked hesitant and Marco sighed, adding, “Look we don't have time to argue about this, the whole royal army is right on our tail.”
As if on cue, they heard a shout followed by the thundering roar of horses racing at full-speed toward them as it grew steadily louder. This finally seemed to convince the two thieves as they quickly formed a human ladder for Marco to climb up, the young man taking care not to step on their hands or faces as he scaled the cliff off of his friends.
Once Marco reached the top and had hauled himself over the ledge, he quickly checked his satchel, before giving a quick glance below, making sure no guards were there yet.
But he heard more guards riding up from around the clifftops and knew they had no time to waste. “Come on, guys! Let's get going!” he shouted before running away at full speed, forgetting the predicament he had left his two friends in.
The two just stared up at the cliff blankly for a moment. “D-Did he just leave us behind... again?” Ferguson asked.
“Yep,” Alfonso replied.
They both sighed dejectedly, as they waited to be arrested... again.
…
Marco continued at full sprint though the forest looking back occasionally to check and see if his pursuers were gone or not. Unfortunately for him, they weren't.
There were about four horeses following him, all carrying armed guards dressed in Mewni's traditional golden armor, the lead guard being none other than the captain herself, Kelly, her recognizable blue hair tied up in a bun, most of it covered by her helmet. “Great not her, that's just what I needed,” Marco muttered to himself, focusing on the impossible task of outrunning the riders on foot. “Does the universe just hate me or something?” he pondered to himself, as his eyes scanned the area around him, trying to think of a plan.
Finally, an idea came to him, as he grabbed onto a nearby vine, using the momentum to swing himself around the tree before kicking the unsuspecting Kelly off of her horse and instead taking her place. He situated himself better into the fancy saddle, checking back once to make sure the girl was okay. He breathed a mental sigh of relief as he saw she had landed in some bushes, her usually well-kept hair now coated in leaves and sticks, rubbing at her head and glaring daggers of death at him but not looking too injured. Once he knew she was fine, he allowed himself a small laugh of victory as he rode triumphantly away from his honest-working rival.
Kelly gritted her teeth as she watched helplessly as the thief rode away on her own horse and she stood up with a huff. After a few moments the other guards caught up to her, stopping to see if she was hurt, one of them worriedly asking, “Are you okay, Kelly?”
“That's Captain Kelly! And yes I'm fine, Tad,” she angrily snapped at her ex-boyfriend. “Just follow after that guy before he gets away!” The others all obeyed, returning to their chase as they hunted after their target, one of them stopping long enough to lift the girl captain up into the saddle behind him before galloping after the criminal, as well.
While that was going on, Marco was putting more and more distance between himself and his pursuers, confident he would easily allude them at this speed. He still took a few seconds to double-check and make sure he really was in the clear, though, listening to the now near-silent trotting of horse hooves, and smiled with satisfaction. Perfect. They were nowhere near him and at this rate he would be long gone before they had time to track him down. He was pretty much in the clear now.
The young thief allowed himself to relax a bit in his seat, loosening his tight grip on the reins. He absentmindedly patted the horse, saying, “Good job, girl. I think we lost them.”
The horse he was riding, who was names Pony Head (Kelly wasn't very clever with the names, her mind on more important things like hunting down criminals), hadn't been paying attention to the whole thing, finding all these stupid chases boring. She would much rather be hanging back at the castle with the other horses, maybe even flirting with a few of the better looking stallions there, not going on some annoying chase through the dumb woods looking for some turd.
But the second the boy spoke, the horse snapped to attention, the unfamiliar voice from her current rider setting off red flags in Pony's mind. What the heck?! Pony thought, as she turned her head to see some dumb boy sitting comfortably on her back, looking behind him rather than even paying attention to what was in front of him. Oh no! Pony thought in anger. No boy is gonna sit on by back!
She dug her hooves into the ground, bringing them to an abrupt halt and Marco, who had been distracted checking behind them to make sure they were free and clear, was nearly sent flying. The thief screamed, squeezing the reign's clenched in his hands with a death grip, somehow managing to stay on Pony Head, much to her anger and dismay.
“Hey what's the big idea?!” Marco screamed down to the horse, his heart still in his throat, causing him to pant harshly. When he got no reply from the animal, he repositioned himself back in the saddle, taking slow, steady breaths to try and calm his frazzled nerves. He did a quick look around for anything that might have spooked the mare. “Did you see a snake or something?”
Only the one on my back, Pony quipped back in her head.
The boy sighed, letting the scare go for now. “Never mind, let's get going,” he said, snapping her reigns to try and get her moving again. But to his surprise the horse didn't move an inch. “Uh, hello?” Marco said with slight annoyance, flicking the reigns again, a little harder this time. “Move.”
Still nothing. The boy was starting to lose his patience, the longer they lingered there the greater the chance the guards would catch up to them, Captain Kelly surely not giving up the chase so easily. This was exactly what Pony Head was thinking, as well, mentally smirking to herself at the idea of getting the annoying boy caught. Yeah keep yellin', turd. I ain't movin' a muscle.
“Come on fleebag, forward!” he yelled, kicking the stubborn horse in the side.
Oh he did not just call me that!! Pony mentally screamed, letting out a loud huff through her nostrils. The red thief heard this and opened his mouth to comment, but it quickly turned to a scream as the horse's hind legs bucked up over and over again, trying to knock the annoying pest off her back. It was a quite to see, as the horse aggressively kicked and stomped her way around the clearing, the poor young man holding onto her back for dear life as he was flung around like a rag doll, shouting out his complaints at the top of his lungs, “Whoa! Wait, stop!!” The thief felt his stomach churn in protest and he quickly exclaimed in a panic, “I think I'm gonna be sick!”
Oh you better not puke on me, you little turd, Pony angrily thought, before giving the hardest buck yet, this time finally managing to throw the boy off of her, Marco releasing a high pitched scream as he was sent flying through the air and right toward a cliff. Luckily for him, he was able to grab onto a tree branch, now suspended over the steep incline, hanging on for dear life as his feet dangled helplessly. Marco swallowed down the panicked lump in his throat and tried to ignore the fact that he was currently hanging over a hundred foot cliff, focusing instead of pulling himself up onto the branch. He just prayed it would support his weight. He managed to wrap his legs around the thick back, meaning he didn't have to worry about his arms giving out just yet, but he still understandably held onto the limb with a death grip.
Just as he was about to begin trying to get back on solid ground, he heard the familiar clip-clop of horse hooves, followed by shifting from the branch, alerting him that he was not alone on the limb. The young thief craned his neck to see the same stupid horse that had gotten him into this situation now try to walk onto the unstable branch. He gasped in horror, terrified that the clearly brain-dead mare was about to get them both killed, Marco not sure if the limb could support their combined weight.
He wondered what on earth could be causing the four-legged creature to act so recklessly. That was until he noticed the satchel handing on the far end of the tree, hanging precariously on one of the small limbs that had luckily stopped its descent. And do despite his fear, he began inching his way across the trunk, trying to move as fast as possible, ignoring his safety instincts screaming at him to stop. Pony, though, quickly caught on to what Marco was trying to do and began trying to step on Marco's hands with her hooves, also seeming to completely disregard the dangerous drop directly below them.
Marco, now with a new motivation to beat the stupid horse and keeps his hands from being crushed, took the risk and jumped toward the branch. He just barely managed to grab the satchel, as well as grip the branch it had been loosely hanging off of, the bag nearly slipping off from all the jerky movements and sent plummeting off the cliff. Marco let out a victorious yell, as he turned to the stupid horse with a smug grin, showing off his claimed prize. “Ha, take that you stupid-”
But Marco didn't get a chance to finish his insult, as suddenly there was a loud snapping sound, Marco and Pony Head both looking over to see the large crack in the trunk, which had been made weak by the two's overwhelming weight and constant abuse on the fragile limb. The didn't have any time to react as it gave altogether breaking free of its hold in the cliff side with another loud snap, now sent falling to the unforgiving earth below.
Marco screamed at the top of his lungs, giving out a very undignified yell, while beside him Pony neighed loudly in terror. He felt his body go weightless, his stomach twisting uncomfortably, as he continued to cling to the plummeting branch. A wave of nausea rose up, both from his unbridled terror and his well-known case of motion sickness, which was choosing to come back at the worst possible time. But suddenly his lifeline was gone, snapping in half when it bumped against the cliff side, sending Marco and Pony spiraling away from one another on their fast track to becoming acquainted with the ground.
Next, Marco reached the treetops, thick vines wrapping around his body and slowing his descent immensely. Finally, the vines went taunt stopping the young thief mere inches from hitting the hard ground. His body went limp, allowing the ropes to hold him there, swaying unevenly above the ground. Marco just stayed like that for a few moments, panting as the stress of the ordeal slowly wore off and his heart rate slowed to a more normal pulse.
Until finally he said in a remarkably calm voice, “Well that was scarring for life.”
The young thief managed to untangle himself from the thick, knotted vines and get himself settle back down on the soft ground, nearly tempted to get down on hands and knees and kiss it. He would have to, if it weren't for the fact that the ground would have been what would have ultimately caused his death and he really didn't want to go around praising his almost killer. So instead, he just put his satchel back over his shoulder and began walking deeper into the woods.
He wasn't sure where he was headed but literally anywhere was better than here at the moment, just in case that dumb horse had survived too and was now looking for him. Right on que, Marco heard an angry neigh in the distance, not that far away. Marco panicked, looking around for somewhere for somewhere to hide, slowly backing up toward a large hill covered in ivy. But as his back brushed against the vegetation, he found no resistance there, stumbling back and into the hidden entrance and cave within.
The red thief had no time to ponder this as he quickly hid behind a nearby rock, just as the distinct shadow of a horse appeared on the vegetated wall. Pony stopped, as if sensing his presence, looking around her, her ears twitching as they tried to pick up any sound from the boy. Marco pushed himself a little further behind the rock, making sure to make no noise whatsoever, holding his breath and trying to keep himself as still as possible.
For a few tense seconds, Marco watched the silhouette of the mare, unmoving and stock still. Then, at last, the annoying pony seemed to give up on the chase, trotting away from the area and allowing Marco to finally release his held breath. But he kept an eye on the entrance as he backed slowly into the cave, taking slow, cautious steps just in case she was still within hearing distance. Once he could no longer see the entrance, he allowed himself to drop his guard and turn.
The boy's mouth dropped open at the unexpected sight before him. Instead of a dingy, dirty cave like he had been suspecting he had found himself in some sort of secluded clearing, though it was hardly empty. For in the middle of the green and vibrant clearing was an abandoned tower, standing tall and majestic as the sunlight gleamed off of it. Its color was faded from years of neglect and thick, green vines clung around its base and crawled up its sides. But despite this, it still looked remarkable, seeming like it had just been ripped from the side of a castle before being dropped into the hidden clearing. That or it had been taken right out of a fairytale book, but that one was just silly, this was real life, not some fairytale... right? Behind it was a rushing waterfall, which also gleamed brightly in the sunshine, running into a gentle stream.
“Huh, a tower? How'd it end up here?” Marco wondered aloud. But he quickly dismissed his wonderment with a shrug. “Oh well, better not look a gift horse in the mouth.”
The young thief cringed at the phrase, before releasing a violent shudder as he was reminded of his brief encounter with that stupid horse. “Okay note to self, never use that phrase again,” he told himself.
“Still this is a good place to lay low for awhile,” he muttered, his eyes scanning the tower carefully, searching for any form of entrance along its crumbling exterior. “Now if I could just find a way inside...”
Marco's gaze froze on a small window near the top and luckily for him, it was open.
“Bingo!” the boy said with a satisfied smile. He made his way over to the tower, looking up its side, trying to plan out a way up. He pulled out two arrows using those to climb slowly up. He got into a stead rhythm, sticking an arrow in the wall with a loud thunk, before pulling out the next one and sticking it into the wall a bit higher than the last, careful to make sure his feet had a proper resting place as he did. Clop. Thunk. Clop. Thunk. The sound repeated itself over and over again, until at last Marco reached the window, grabbing onto its frame and lifting himself inside. He tucked the arrows into his satchel along with the crown, as he looked around the dark room.
It was impossible to tell what anything looked like inside until his eyes adjusted to the dim lighting, but he didn't really care of the condition of his temporary hiding place at the moment. He was more interested in checking on his valued prize. He looked into the open satchel with a content grin, staring pleasingly at the golden crown shimmering inside.
So distracted, in fact, that he didn't see a small form making its way over to him in the darkness. He let out a satisfied sigh, saying softly to himself, “Looks like I'm finally out of danger.”
A loud bong sounded, echoing around the dark enclosure, as the young thief fell over unconscious, his body going limp as a heavy frying pan smacked him hard in the back of the head. Star, for a moment, just stood over the sleeping man on the floor in front of her, her eyes wide in shock of what she had just done. She continued to hold the frying pan up, ready to strike once again, just in case he did manage to remain conscious after the hit.
“Um, hello?” Star hesitantly called down to him. “A-Are you awake?”
She poked him a couple of times with the pan, but when he didn't react she relaxed some, letting her guard drop a little. Though she was anything but calm, as she began pacing around the room, saying to herself. “Okay so I just knocked out some guy and now he's unconscious in my living room. What do I do? What should I tell mom? No, I cannot tell mom about this. Then again,” Star stopped pacing, putting a finger to her chin as she looked thoughtfully over at the boy. “If she saw that I was capable of taking out this intruder then maybe she would see that I'm strong enough to be able to go outside! I'm a genius!”
Star patted herself on the back for the idea, a wide, hopeful grin on her face, as she approached the boy again. She looked down at him smugly, saying with a laugh, “Ha, thought you could just sneak in and try and steal my hair, didn't you? Well you are no match for my incredible talents, mister.”
Once, she finished bragging, she just grinned proudly down at the unconscious boy. But her smile vanished as she finally got a good look at the intruder. He was actually quite handsome, his soft brown locks laying across his face, which looked so peaceful and warm as he slept. She could see the slightest hint of toned muscles though his shirt, which caused a lump to form in her throat for some reason. And to top it all off, he had the absolute cutest mole on his left cheek.
For a moment, all Star could do was just stare, love-struck at the handsome boy laying on the floor in front of her, a blush beginning to light up her cheeks. That was until she felt a small tug on her hair and she jumped turning to see Janna flapping her wings behind her, a frown clearly discernible on her fuzzy features. “W-What?” Star said, quickly hiding her blushing cheeks from the bat. “I've just never seen another human before is all,” she said defensively.
Star didn't have to be looking at her bat friend to know that she was raising a skeptical eyebrow right now. “L-Let's just find a place to put this guy, before mom gets back,” Star said, trying way too hard to change the subject.
She scanned the room in search of a good hiding spot, finally landing on the large closest. “Ah ha! Perfect!” She looked to Janna for agreement, but the bat was still just giving her a skeptical look, not convinced the boy could fit in there. Star frowned, before demanding, “Just help me get him in there.”
