10 Questions With Rugged Rulez
Rugged Rulez (also known as Street Wolf and/or Simon Sayz) is one of the greatest contributors of the Hip Hop culture, not just in South Africa but also on an international scale. We get to know more about this Krumping champion, avid producer and inspiration to the masses in 10 questions...
Tumblr media
1. From Street Wolf to Rugged Rulez, what brought up the name change and what was the story or inspiration behind the first name (Street Wolf)?
Street Wolf will always be one of my names. Just because now I'm also Rugged Rulez, it doesn't mean that I've dropped all my other names. It just adds to my list of names. I go by my stage and music names. The inspiration for Street Wolf comes from OG names Wolf in Cape Town and SaburWolf in USA have both inspired my name of Street Wolf because I have a street style of art and dance. Wolf, mainly, because I have long hair.
2. You have competed in a lot of competitions. Which ones did you feel that you were highly on point and why?
Yeah! A lot of competitions, these past 10 years, with different opponents from all over the country but 2012 is and was in my most famous prime winning Krump King of Africa. Now I'm starting to prime new young guys coming up who are very GOOD, they remind me of myself. I've been practicing new style competitions now are learning curves for me.

3. You are not just a Krumper but also a Krump music producer and a photographer. What brought up the music producer part and photography? Where do you get the inspiration for your dancing and music?
Being a krumper is my main aim, always since 2007 until now. I loved Krump beats and music. I started making beats in 2008, trying my best, it was some of the most frustrating years of my life and trying to perfect my sound. Photography came way before I knew Krump but Krump opened many doors for me to get mentored by many great photographers such as Terence Isaacs and Director Cube.
4. You have a lot of titles under your belt. Which one would you say is your most precious title?
Most precious title is when Tight Eyez, the originator of Krump, crowned me Champion in 2012. I don't think it gets better than that for me I thank God for his graces, in the future, I can reach a higher level.
5. You have done few charity works. Giving back, is it a part of who you are or something you like doing?
I remember I used to teach the youth many things but I demonstrated faith, to its fullest. I teach them you can gain all things through Jesus. That's my message to the world. And, young kids never give up.
6. A lot of Krumpers dream is to be in the presence of Krump dance living legend, Tight Eyez, and you had an opportunity to be in his presence. Tell us what was going through your mind at that moment?
It was like a dream meeting Tight Eyez. I was young looking up to my idol, the reason that I started to move. He was there in South Africa for the first time. It was the most overwhelmed that I have ever been, I couldn't even speak. My mind was fuelled and focused on standing out the most by just being myself. He loved it and no one could believe it. I was just going to be happy to meet him to see him in the flesh but I ended up being the best for him that day. That was the greatest moment in my career and it will always be. I pray all Krumpers’ dreams come true to meet Eyez. It’s something very special.

7. Describe to us your style of Krump music and who would you like to work with? Sometimes you incorporate Zulu language in your music. Tell us the reason behind that.
My Krump music style is the most original to me. I try to make beats like overseas but end up with something completely different. That's just me, I'm different. My big homey, Big Rulez, likes my beats. Playa likes them, sometimes, so that's big. I’m still working hard. I've been inspired by many legends, in the game. I would love to have Tight Eyez record on my beats one day. I would like to work with Paulmo again one day. He is always amazing, at all types of music.
I say Zulu words sometimes because they have amazing sound and meaning. I'm sure overseas Krumpers are amazed that they never heard some words before in Krump songs; its Art to me.
8. What is your biggest achievement so far?
Becoming Buck was the biggest achievement. Meeting so many great friends and mentors. Representing Krump is monumental, for me. It always has been and always will.
9. Describe to us the Krump world in S.A. Has it reached international level and being a krumper in a country that is full of different cultures, do they play a role on the Krump world in S.A in terms of the dance form itself?
Krump world in S.A has pioneered Krump in Africa and has far reached international level. I've been told that I'm an international krumper. This country is full of different cultures, they play a huge role in our style that we bring to the world in terms of dance itself. South Africa has amazing dancers but Krumpers are on a very high level and it’s keeping up with even the best countries such as Russia but we still have a lot to learn.

10.  What can you say to a Krumper who is still trying to find his or her ground?
To a krumper still trying to find his ground, you should always be ready for a battle. Always be good but even if you’re not, believing in yourself can take you beyond your limits. If someone doesn't like your style, don't become frustrated. Just take all criticisms as a good thing and a step forward. We can't all be Buck in the first few months, it takes years of practice. Do what I did, when someone told me I wasn't good enough, I tried my best to get better and that's how you do it. Practice makes perfect. Believing in yourself is key, never giving up to achieve your goals. God always has the right timing, just be humble and God will lift you up to a higher level.
