Tie Xi Qu: West of the Tracks  Wang Bing

This monumental 9 hour achievement stands tall as one of the most impressive documentaries I've ever seen. A vivid evocation of a time and place, so real that it felt as if I was visiting there myself. The extreme run time is essential to this. This is essential documentary film making, presenting a film that's not just great art but also an important historical document for posterity. Wang minimally impacts, influences or intrudes on what goes on, his presence doesn't seem to bother anyone as they act and react naturally and unimpeded. Wang just captures and presents his findings.
