Tick Tick Boom Easter egg #1:
Vanessa Hudgens plays one of Jonathan Larson's singers in Tick Tick Boom.
Tumblr media
Where she's playing the main female role of Superbia. Like a lot of other casting in Tick Tick Boom, this is a reference to another Jonathan Larson show.
In the 2019 version RENT, she plays one of the main cast - Maureen. (And honestly gives a great performance)
Tumblr media
(Seriously watch RENY live 2019)
She also played Mimi on Broadway, that performance is regarded as more "controversial", though it occurred at peak Vanessa Hudgens hate so that with a grain of salt. (I do think she was miscast though).
Here's the RENTHEAD archive link to out tonight as mimi -
youtube
Here's her singing Another Day with Aaron Tveit!
youtube
And of course a link to the 2019 RENT album where she plays Maureen.

Oh my god alma. I did the same thing? I have seriously force fed tick tick boom to all my friends. My favourite song has always been boho days but i do love see her smile too. OMG IM SO EXCITED TO SEE ANOTHER TTB ENTHUSIAST OMGGGGGGG
HI YES I WILL TALK ABOUT TICK TICK BOOM. It's a serious problem. It became one of my favorite musicals in like 2016? And when the trailer came out I became a problem. That was the only thing I would talk about. I have watched the movie at least 6 times and I always cry.
And not only did I make all my friends watch it I demanded that they told me when they watched it so I could send them a 5 minute long voice note explaining EVERYTHING. Every easter egg, every reference, why the dinner scene is one of the most important moments in modern cinema. I was ANNOYING
Also gods Boho Days. Boho Days was always so important to me because it came as a little bonus on the OG cast recording right? And it was the first time I ever heard Jonathan. And buddy when it started playing in the trailer I legally signed over my soul to that movie.
So yeah as you can see I'm so normal about ttb. I don't listen to it every birthday or anything
In all seriousness I'm here any time someone wants to talk about this show. My beloved

Deep breath,,,, okay. Thanks for coming up with this ask game @heartofspells! (speaking of— forgive me if I've simply missed it but you don't seem to have told us yours? what's up with that!) and thank you for tagging me @tracingpatternswrites @sliebman10 !! am honoured to be considered enough of a writer for this haha, since I've barely completed anything besides microfics, but hey I rly hope some of these happen at some point so!
We all have those lists, right? The ones that just build and build, filled with ideas we don’t know if we’ll ever actually make something out of or not.
Tell me about those (if you want and are willing; i understand sometimes ideas sit closely for a reason).
Which ones are you the most excited about?
Waltz No.19 this is technically a wip not an idea, and was going to be just the figure skating fic but now I'm dumping my brain into it. it's like I can't make something niche enough. you mean you'd willing read thousands of words' worth of stilted prose about a sport I don't even do? how about wolfstar being asexual? oh and did I mention I'm making remus half-chinese? anyway this fic lives in my head so much I don't even know how to talk about it anymore?? again I'm a baby writer so this will take months but eh. I'll wait for it. (tysm for friends who've let me ramble a bit about this one I love you)
What’s one you don’t think you’ll ever follow through with, and why?
oh oh OH there was that one where wolfstar accidentally had a child in first war but sirius didn't know about it, and it's PoA compliant only because remus modified his own memories. then one day in grimmauld place sirius finds remus sitting with a vial containing his own 12 years of lost memories. i don't think there's a single happy thing about this so lol, no.
Are any of them just left to rest because you need to talk them out more and haven’t? If so, maybe someone will see this and help!
these... I don't know when or if these will ever happen. I don't even know if these are the kinds of stories that fics are. but uk.
this time-travelling magical realism ish thing of historian? sirius accidentally falling into the life of the young werewolf who lived during the fork in the road of an ancient-ish community's fate. at the same time remus, who is desperately trying to hold together a world that's falling apart, wakes up in a dystopian future, and is recruited by mcgonagall's office for intel about remaining scraps of werewolf communities. it'll be prosey it'll be pretty (hopefully) and I have no idea what this is. I really have not read/written nearly enough for this ahaha if I write it now it'll be so boring
I watched tick tick boom three times in a row and started a fic where remus lupin goes to new york and meets jonathan larson. remus is busking on the streets when jon picks him up to play at the workshop for a musical called Superbia. there's. no. plot. just the fact that jon and remus are the same age and also andrew garfield. I'd love for this to be some sort of andrew garfield trivia easter egg crack fic but I actually know nothing about andrew garfield. also it got sad because remus is Running From Himself etc etc
oscar wilde-esque sirius??? quiet gentleman remus who sirius initially sneers at for being so plain and conforming but ends up discovering whole worlds with?? I'm just waiting for that oscar wilde phase to tick off to make this happen
on another note, I suck at talking to people so much. but others have told me I'm an alright listener ...? so if any of you ever want I'd love— I'd be honoured— to listen to rambles about ideas
and um open tag! but pls tag me back if you see this and do it!

Some thoughts on tick tick … BOOM!
(now that I’ve watched the whole thing)
I’ve only seen the show once like 15+ years ago so my memory for things that are not on the soundtrack is hazy. I don’t remember if the stuff about Jonathan’s death was included at the end of the show but man, that over the images of the original cast of Rent just destroyed me.
Let’s be real, I sobbed for the last half hour of the movie, including over the closing credits.
The performances were phenomenal. I didn’t know Andrew Garfield could sing. He can sing.
I really loved how some of the numbers were changed from solos to duets between the performers in “the show” and the people in Jon’s “real life.” The one that sticks out the most is Come to Your Senses which completely floored me. Stunning.
I would have loved to see MJ Rodriguez have a bigger part just because I love her and she’s a phenomenal singer but I know that part was created for the movie, so I’m just happy to see her in it.
I hadn’t remembered how many bits and details and turns of phrase this shares with Rent. It was like little Easter eggs for someone who’s ride or die obsession musical as an Angsty Teenaged Theater Nerd was Rent.
I really really loved this. May even sit down and watch the whole thing front to back if I ever have time.

Watched tick, tick... BOOM! this weekend with my friends and it was so eerie, especially in the beginning, because I had no idea it dealt with turning 30 so much (I was actually able to say “me too!” when Jonathan said “I’m turning 30 in two days!”) but if you’re looking for an amazing movie musical I cannot recommend it enough. LMM did such a great job (especially for a directorial debut!!! are you kidding me???), the songs are great, you can tell Andrew Garfield had so much fun playing Larson, and there’s a lot of fun Broadway Easter eggs :)

what are your favorite episodes of gilmore girls?
ooOOOOOOH GREAT QUESTION i’ll break it down season by season:
season one
pilot. i mean, obviously. it sets them all up so well, character-wise; plus, you can tell some episodes in season one that were filmed shortly after the pilot vs a while later, just bc of emily’s differing hair lengths
the lorelai’s first day at chilton: introduces such great characters (paris, madeline, louise) and also is such a great way to continue the transition into learning about this world
rory’s birthday parties: god. just. the stark difference between emily and richard’s world vs stars hollow...... the found family of practically all of stars hollow showing up to rory’s home party...... “lorelai’s right. i don’t know my daughter at all.”...... God
forgiveness and stuff: like, gOD. a masterclass of acting especially from kelly bishop and lauren graham; it hits so differently after edward hermann’s actual passing. luke and lorelai’s relationship displayed on what he’d do for her. lord!
paris is burning: paris................ the Beginning of turning from enemies to friends...... plus, like, you get to see some of lorelai’s commitment issues, which plays out throughout the entire series (sometimes To My Great Aggravation)
concert interruptus: the bangles 🥺paris and rory 🥺
christopher returns: i mean. you see the dynamic between rory and christopher, lorelai and christopher, and emily, richard, and christopher, which just paints such a clearer picture of what lorelai’s life might have been like back then. PLUS, emily being soft toward rory; it’s one of my fave relationship moments for them, and i kind of regret taking that line from her and giving it to christopher in wyliwf.
star crossed lovers and other strangers: the same way we get to see emily and rory, we get to see richard and lorelai; also, you can see how lorelai’s commitment issues might have inadvertently affected rory in this. plus i love love LOVE the backstory of the stars hollow lovers festival, i wish they’d repeated it in later seasons!
emily in wonderland: i really wish you’d gotten to see the effect of learning about lorelai and rory living in the shed play out more than a one-episode arc, i really wish we did, but like. emily bishop, once again, acting her damn heart out. phenomenal.
season two
the road trip to harvard: you get to see the beginnings of how rory leaving for college might affect lorelai, plus you get to see rory in her ivy league habitat. luke getting so suddenly, “inexplicably” cheerful when he hears that lorelai’s not marrying max. and at the very ending emily being sympathetic to max. bless it.
nick & nora/sid & nancy: first jess ep. “dodger.” what else is there to say. points off lorelai tho for immediately losing it at jess when he snarks at her, when, like, that is your move, lorelai, you should recognize that?
presenting lorelai gilmore: rory stepping more and more into her grandparents’ world in a way lorelai never wanted to; though i don’t ship christopher and lorelai, their dance scene is adorable. plus, emily and richard fighting a bit and the beginnings of richards (seasons long!) arc about his journey with his work.
the ins and oust of inns: MIA. you get to see mia for the first time! lorelai and sookie having a fight is :( but you get to see lorelai’s turmoil over actually leaving the inn. emily coming to see mia! luke yelling at the town over them being rude about luke! lorelai coming to his defense! rory telling jess off and jess wordlessly fixing luke’s toaster in silent apology!
the bracebridge dinner: GOD. love it. the horses and carriages! the absurd historical acting! emily and richard! rory and jess! luke and lorelai! it’s fantastic!
a-tisket, a-tasket: I LOVE THIS EPISODE. some of the town absurdity that was just A Plus. “it’s not like she’s shipping off to ‘nam!” is a great line. jackson proposing to sookie! and poor lane........
there’s the rub: emily and lorelai, seeing how great they could get along, but seeing how either of them wreck it just when it’s getting a-okay. god. it’s just such a great microcosm of their relationship.
dead uncles and vegetables: luke......... Luke. lorelai and rory and jess all rallying around him in their ways, and stars hollow by extension. even tho they were pretty shitty at first, they, like. managed to make it up to him in the end.
lorelai’s graduation day: GOD LAUREN GRAHAM, KELLY BISHOP, AND EDWARD HERMANN KILL IN THE GRADUATION SCENE!!!!! i ADORE that shot of the three of them, gets me every single time!!! the only thing i dislike about it is rory accidentally missing the graduation bc....... :/. like. i really like jess. but. come on.
i can’t get started: sookie’s wedding!!! her freaking out over the cake so much in her dress is So Her, she looked so pretty omg! plus, if the spa ep is a good microcosm of emily and lorelai, this is a great microcosm for christopher and lorelai. plus!!!! RORY AND JESS FIRST KISS!!!!!!
season three (look, full disclosure, seasons 3/4 are like. my faves. so)
haunted leg: gosh. lauren graham kills it in that last couple scenes. plus! kirk asking lorelai out on a date is hilarious! emily and lorelai’s lunch at luke’s going So Bad! and i know that not a ton of people like the francie chilton student politics intrigue subplot isn’t great for some people, but i do think that the potential was Great and there are definitely some really good scenes that arose from that subplot, so
take the deviled eggs... like. just. a great blend of town insanity (patty’s new boy, the town loner pitching a protest no one knows the reason behind) and lorelai and rory bonding (by deviled-egging jess’ CAR) and just!!! yes!!!!
they shoot gilmores, don’t they?: i mean. come ON. what list would be complete without this? literally every single favorites list has this episode on there. the dance marathon is the perfect example of town insanity! lane and dave getting their bonding! that little luke and lorelai moment about having kids! that scene of rory crying into lorelai’s shoulder!
a deep-fried korean thanksgiving: i love the whole “three thanksgivings” thing. Can Relate, Do Understand. i think that lorelai freaking out at rory for applying to yale is definitely a contrived subplot (i mean. she was never going to apply to only harvard. ma’am.) but i do like seeing sookie, and luke and jess, and just.... Yeah
dear emily and richard: our ONLY flashback ep! while i do think that only lauren graham can really pull lorelai off, the actress is, like, fairly decent (young christopher, however, does not really fit) and you just! yeah! you get to see them back in their youth and FINALLY get the context of how lorelai ran away!
the big one: like! yay paris! lorelai’s reaction (”i’ve got the good kid!”) is Gross, Frankly! it’s gross and bad! but also poor paris 🥺but!!! rory helping to comfort her afterwards!! richard falling asleep in the middle and having No idea of what just went down is also inexplicably hilarious to me!
those are strings, pinocchio: i mean. it’s the graduation episode. God. i just???? god. it’s such a great episode, there’s so many great moments, i just. 🥺
season four
the lorelais’ first day at yale: a great little titling parallel to chilton, but also, rory panicking when lorelai leaves is like. such a Thing ya know??? i just. yeah. i really like that ep it’s a nice introduction
the festival of living art: one, this show won its only emmy bc of the makeup, so that alone is great. uh, kirk being so adversary to the guy who plays judas is god tier humor! plus! sookie and jackson having their baby!
ted koppel’s big night out: THE FOOTBALL GAME EPISODE! i actually kind of love it, but more the first half than the latter; it’s such an emily and richard way to prepare for a football game, you know? and then meeting pennilyn lott! igniting the arc of emily and richard having doubts about their marriage which has Acting! Moments! but this also has jason and lorelai’s first date, which i Dislike, bc i Dislike Jason Very Much.
nag hammadi is where they found the gnostic gospels: seeing jess come back into town and you get to see how unfinished things are between him and rory..... the luke angst..... Yes.
the incredible sinking lorelais: a very realistic part of college, imo, in which you feel overwhelmed and anxious and EVERYTHING SUCKS NOW CAN I JUST CALL MY MOM, though i wish they’d set it up a bit more and followed it longer than an episode, and also that rory hadn’t gone to dean; but also, trix, and richard standing up to her, which!
scene in a mall: idk i just love this episode? seeing emily in her shopping element; seeing her break down in that way; seeing how shopping is like, one of her Only ways to execute power, and how she’s kind of jealous of lorelai’s career bc she was born into a generation where the only thing it was really acceptable for her to do was cultivate a husband and a nice house; plus!!! that last bit of emily and richard and the apples at the table just BREAKS your heart!!!
girls in bikinis, boys doin’ the twist: SPRING BREAAAAK which is so unexpected for paris and rory and therefore very funny. you get to see madeline and louise again—i actually really love their characters, lmao! paris and rory kiss! just! yeah!
tick, tick, tick, boom!/afterboom: another “idk i just enjoy it” episode. richard and floyd coming to a head; kirk’s easter egg hunt; seeing little davey. however i have some Words for rory because lindsay deserves better??? i understand that she could get a part time job but also MIND YOUR BUSINESS?????? dean’s the one taking classes! that’s an unnecessary expense! he has two jobs!! he’s allowed to take a pause!!! also i can’t believe i’m forced to defend dean right now!!! fuck asher, tho, but yay! breaking up with jason!!! yay breaking up with jason!!!!!!
luke can see her face/last week fights, this week tights: i can’t, okay??? i literally had to. the beginning of jess’ (admittedly mostly off-screen) development arc! luke and the self-help books! the absurdity of the renaissance wedding! the WEDDING DANCE!!!
raincoats and recipes: truly an episode has never gone from such a “FUCK YESSSSSS FINALLY” scene to a “FUCK NOOOOOO WHAT ARE YOU DOINGGGGGG” but honestly it’s just. it’s Such a fantastic episode like i can’t
season five
written in the stars: their first date 🥺the horoscope 🥺”i am in, lorelai. i am all in.” 🥺 HER GOING DOWNSTAIRS IN JUST HIS SHIRT 🥺 HIM YELLING AT THE TOWN ABOUT HOW IT’S THEIR RELATIONSHIP AND NONE OF THEIR BUSINESS 🥺🥺🥺
we got us a pippi virgin: literally the concept alone of “nearly coming to blows via bop it” is great. also luke being like “rory is like pippi!” and showing off what a high regard he holds her in 🥺
emily says hello: LITERALLY so many great little things about this episode. emily deciding she wants to try dating! rory and christopher snapping at each other! KELLY BISHOP’S ACTING AFTER THE DATE WHEN SHE CLOSES THE DOOR ON HIM AND BURSTS INTO TEARS!!!!!!!
women of questionable morals: the dog.
wedding bell blues: HUNDREDTH EPISODE couldn’t NOT make it on here, so here it is!!! luke and lorelai looking at each other when she’s next to the aisle! luke and christopher both yelling and logan—AcTING! also emily being so manipulative even on her second wedding day, it’s just So classically her, and kelly bishop and lauren graham in the final scene is just. Mwah!
so... good talk: rory literally stepping into lorelai’s shoes for a dinner and being the one to snap at emily and richard is Such a role reversal for her but honestly whenever it does happen i actually really enjoy seeing the dichotomy between the grandparents seeing rory as their perfect little second chance and lorelai seeing her as her mini-me and how rory walks the line between each. AND THAT ENDING KISS SCENE BETWEEN LUKE AND LORELAI????? I CAN’T?????
pulp friction: LORELAI CONTINUING TO ICE OUT EMILY AND RICHARD!!!!! the yelling scene at the diner!!!! plus seeing the chilton skirt come out again was nice imo i too have reused private schoolwear
season six (the season, admittedly, i have watched the least)
we’ve got magic to do: the outfits of the dar bash. paris’ sudden dedication to the proletariat. emily’s rant to shira. that is all
twenty-one is the loneliest number: them finally starting to talk; “this is luke, my soon-to-be-stepfather”; the pastor scene is also just. hilarious. but also so very richard and emily
let me hear your balalaikas ringing out: lorelai’s emotions toward paul anka being sick Oof and luke and the soccer team lmao but also JESS RETUUUUURNS!!!!! RORY SNAPS OUT OF IT!!!!!! FINALYYYYYYY!!!!
friday night’s alright for fighting: literally the montage of all of them intercut with fighting and them sitting in silence while the other two yell in the background to them laughing is just. Peak gilmore
this turned out..... even longer than expected lmao

Quarantine Diary, lovingly referred to as quarantime: (this is 100% for me to look back on and remember how i spend my time when left to my own devices, also hopefully so i am slightly productive in a day)
DAY ONE: I think I might lose my mind. This morning I got a new game for myself and spent a good portion of the day playing that. I also taught myself the beginning of Halloween from Rent on piano. At night I really started to lose it and watched a full lengtg documentary on foreign surrogacy. As of now I go back to school on the 31st
DAY TWO: I’m not sure I’ll survive for two weeks, but much less a whole month. School got pushed back to April 15th. Help me. I once again spelt an embarrassing amount of my day playing two separate games I’ve just started. I also taught myself most of Johnny Can’t Decide from Tick Tick Boom on piano, however since my wrist is broken and Jonathan Larson has abnormally long fingers some of the chords posed a minor challenge. It was also Saint Patrick’s day, so my dad put on Irish punk music for my baby brother (and us) and we made cabbage, fake corn beef because we’re vegetarian, and french fries because the store didn’t have potatoes in any other form.
DAY THREE: Having a sense of time is only a distant memory. I’m running low on lucky charms. My herbs did sprout this morning though so that was pretty thrilling. I taught the baby what noise the cow makes. Spoiler: it was moo. Me and my dad made veggie burgers, and then had our first tabletop game night in months. (We used to do it every thursday, but we’ve been way too busy for that recently).
DAY FOUR: I wasn’t sure if this belonged in yesterday’s or not but technically it was this morning because it was so late at night, but I officially got the first scene of the screenplay I’m currently writing done! I’m writing it specifically for a film festival for short films, and I only really have one *very long* scene left!! I woke up, and immediately took a nap because it was like 6. I cooked me and the baby breakfast and then composed a whole two measures for the score. Currently playing the “sit on the kitchen floor and fake sip unopened gatorade, and then say “ahhhh”” game. (after i wrote this I also went for a run, i ran a sub thirty minute three miles!)
DAY FIVE: animalcrossinganimalcrossinganimalcrossinganimalcrossing also I drew Cthulhu (I end every one of my sketchbooks with a Cthulhu, perhaps I will post my first Cthulhu vs most recent Cthulhu) I also ran way too aggressively yesterday because I am Sore.
DAY SIX:
very little change. Piano, animal crossing, etc. I did listen to A Chorus Line today; I got really into A Class Act, which is a show about Edward Kleban, the dude who wrote A Chous Line’s life. I remember listening to that in the car with my dad when I was really little, but then again I remember listening to Book of Mormon with him around then as well, so it probably wasn’t the best way to judge what the show was going to be like. (Fun fact my dad also took me to see Book of Mormon when I was 11!) But I also know my grandmother really likes it and so I just thought it’d be a little more Watch With Your Grandma Friendly. It was not. Not like,, super inappropriate just not what I was expecting
DAY SEVEN:
Again, I’ve learned I only have so many activities. I’m trying really hard to think of another idea for my screenplay, since there is absolutely no way for me to get enough middle aged people to film the one I was planning. I was also on call with my bf for four hours straight today so that was fun
DAY EIGHT:
Worst day by far. I didn’t do much of anything, and I feel really guilty about how little I got accomplished. That’s about it.
DAY NINE:
Got a lot accomplished!!! I organized my whole desk (which, for context towards the end I was getting to things from 2014, that’s how big of a job this was) I also started my vocab for one of my classes, and I set up my journal for next month! I thought I’d start using it a little more since I have nothing else to do, plus updating this every day has hopefully gotten me back into the habit of actually using something daily.
DAY TEN
Okay honestly it’s been a minute since I updated this so I don’t really remember what I did,, but I’ll use this day to define what I’ve been doing daily. I’m pretty sure I haven’t say yet, but I’ve been stretching every day. I used to be a very serious gymnast, but I got to the point where essentially I had to choose between attending public school, or continuing with gymnastics, and like the average parent of a twelve year old, my dad was not about to let me stop going to school for something I physically couldn’t keep doing past my mid twenties. But I really miss having any control over my body, so I’ve decided I’m commiting to trying to gain back a little flexibility. It drives me crazy, I do theater obviously and the fact I’m such a mediocre dancer now is not doing good things for my ego
DAY ELEVEN
DAY TWELVE
DAY THIRTEEN
DAY FOURTEEN
I ran pretty well today. Sub nine minute miles, not super speedy, but fast for me at least. I mean I ran two miles in close to 15 minutes, so if I can do that for another mile I’d PR my 5k time for sure. Other than that, I procrastinated my speech, but I did get a bit of it done tonight on call with my boyfriend
DAY FIFTEEN
The speech was really eating me up. In an effort to ignore it I blew through 200 pages worth of a book today. I had a call for my acting class from 5:30-8:30, and I’m kinda looking forward to some of the stuff we’re doing in there. I start school again tomorrow and I have never been so excited for school to start back up in my life (and I’m never particularly unhappy; I quite enjoy the first week of a new school year)
DAY SIXTEEN
So school was kinda a dud. The website couldn’t support every kid in the county trying to get on it at once so it just,,, didn’t work. I spent most of the day filming my speech and I’m superrrr proud of it (I love giving speeches with all my heart, I go so overboard when we get assigned them for school though, no one else put as much effort into theirs as I did)
DAY SEVENTEEN
I got all of my class work for the week done, except for one class that isn’t doing it the way the rest of mine are. Don’t really remember what else happened today
DAY ???: I got my last two lab reports done. Also it was easter, so we hid eggs for the baby and looked longingly at the Easter egg bread we made (half jewish half italian, an unfortunate combination during Passover) Got my three hour mandates boyfriend call in and we looked at early humans and what we evolved from. Turns out I hate looking at that shit and I think Lucy will never leave the realm of my mind
DAY ???: Not a super interesting one but a good one. I filmed a monologue for my long form improv class, and did it on my Fancy Filmmaking Camera, which was completely unnecessary but very fun. We did have to deal with some legal stuff that I both don’t feel comfortable sharing and don’t want to make anyone uncomfortable with. I had acting class, and that was absolutely it. Today my boyfriend and I talked about how shitty cops are, and his adventures in growing vegetables

Digidestine of Creativity
It was odd- seeing those lights in the sky, watching those older kids fight.. what were they doing in they sky anyways? Why were they fighting?
Was this just her over active imagination? Or was she really seeing all of this-? This seemed to be a world wide occurrence..
And as fast as it appeared, it vanished, that big monster was gone and the kids vanished from view. Leaving the five year old girl to wonder what that was all about.
Life went on. Two years went by-
The small girl with almost golden like hair in a long braid walked down the set of stairs from her home- down to the riverside. Man made waterways; canals, were common around here, the waters used to be clear.. So, her father used to say.
It wasn’t a wise idea to eat the fish out of it now. Though, it was still fun watching them swim-! The seven year old clapped happily- watching the different sized snappers swim and fight for bread she’d throw down. Sometimes, things will float down stream-
Soccers ball, volleyballs- To coconuts and large palm leaves. Though, Today.. was rather.. different. It was to oblong shaped to be a ball, it wasn’t a coconut.. to.. colorful.
In a hurry, the child ran for the net on the side of the limestone wall that surrounded their boat dock. Net in hand, she jumped over styrofoam block and just about snagged the odd object with the tool.
“..got you-!” She smiled, pulling the large net back up to her. With a huff, she placed the strange object down. White, orange and red. That was the colors of this thing.. now that she looked at it more-
It kind of looked like an egg..
A voice from the house, the child’s parent called out for her to come back inside, it was getting late and the sun was getting low-
She couldn’t show this to her father.. something in the pit of her stomach told her not too. How would she hide this..?
——————
Today was another day, the small girl walked down the stairs again, there, hidden under some bushes was her strange egg. It’s color reminds her of Easter egg- she smiled as she watched over it from time to time; she made it seem like she was looking out at the canal almost every day, or just sitting and watching the sky.
What would this thing hatch into? If it was a big chicken.. chickens weren’t allowed in their neighborhood..
She was eating one half of a peanut butter and jelly sandwich as she watched the egg; a sudden cracking noise made her stop mid way as she turned her eyes to the egg before her. It shook, and crakes started forming around it-
It had only been three days since she found it- was that a good or bad thing?! She obviously had no idea what she was doing-!
The egg hatched.
What popped out confused the small child even more. It was just.. it was a small.. Smoke ball.. cloud. Yellow glowing eyes and a small burning flame on the top of its head.
Despite the fire, it didn’t see to be burning anything.. but the small smoke ball was scared. It huddling down near the ground as the human child looked ever closer-
In a whisper, she asked “what.. are you..?” But then she smiled “.. want my sandwich..?”
The little being must be hungry..
————
It’s was odd.
A young woman woke up in the middle of the woods. Just beyond was a desert of sand. Where was she? Just a moment ago she was outside the forest property her father owned, wondering around in the cold air of March. Setting old logs and hollow trees on fire because they needed to be taken down.
Now she was in a humid atmosphere that then escalated into blazing hot temperatures with a single step. Shielding her eyes, she quickly grabbed her sunglasses and placed them on. Unable to be outside without them, she always carried them around.
Her short black hair, and dimmed teal highlights blew in the hot wind-
“How... did I get here..?” She asked herself.
Not a sight of anyone or anything.. walking through the desert seemed like a terrible thing to do unprepared. Though, was she about to go running blindly through a forest as well?
Oh right-! Her phone!
Quickly reaching into her pocket, the young girl froze. Pulling out the thing that was in her pocket.. wasn’t her phone at all.. where was her phone? What was this thing?!
A strange looking device, it was small and it fit in the palm of her hand. Holding it up to her ear, wondering if it was some sort of clock- but no ticking came from it.
Enough of this, she needs to find a way home. Her father and brother must be worried. Walking back into the woods she started looking around.
————
What were the possibilities that it would rain? The young woman can’t travel in these conditions; not with her weak immune system- she can’t afford to get sick here.
“This is what I get for not getting out much..” huddled in a cave, stacking damp wood up to start a small fire “I mean, sure- The cold never makes me sick; but add water and boom-“ she slammed the stick down on the flat wood she was trying to ignite.
“I’m suddenly dying three days later if I don’t dry out.”
Frustrated, she glared down at the non cooperative wood; maybe she should move this further in the cave.. if only she had her matches.
Grabbing some of the bigger wood and kindling; she stood up “just face it Sabrina, you’re lost- it’s raining; you’re stuck in a cave.. I’m gonna die out here.”
“..though.. at least there aren’t any bugs in here..” she sighed “if I do die; I won’t be bug food.”
Her stomach growling at the mention of food. Groaning, she slightly looked up; there in the back seemed to be an orange light that flickered- she froze in her place. Someone was already in here? Could they help her out?!
Dropping the dampened wood and hurried to the light; She didn’t even care if this light was dangerous, just the thought of not being alone made her happy.
Slowing down, and evening out her breathing, Sabrina took notice that.. the light wasn’t from a fire- or well.. it was from a fire but.. it was from a being that was made out of fire. “What in..” She seemed to be lost with words as she crept closer.
Hearing the calming intake of air, it seemed to be asleep. Sabrina got so close to feel the nice.. warming.. heat.. maybe she didn’t need to make a fire anymore..
Her eyes drooping, and the sound from the rain with this added heat was making her tired. Maybe.. maybe she could sleep for a bit..?
As she laid down, Sabrina hadn’t realized that little thing in her side pocket started glowing.
—————
‘Meramon-! Where’d you go-!’
A sharp intake of air, and quickly sitting up, Sabrina looked around. How could she have been so stupid-? Sleeping next to a literal fire monster? How long was she asleep...-
The fire man is gone..
“Wha-“ looking around; she felt a very hot pebble hit the back of her arm, it stung and she hiss in pain.
Turning around, there stood the man made out of fire; standing in the way of her exit. It was incredible bright outside; compared to the inside of the cave- yet he still glowed- Blue eyes narrowed at the Human, and a stitched sneer.
Quickly putting on her sunglasses, the man spoke-
“Who are you; Why are you here..” his gruff voice asked.
Sabrina mouth was just agape, though before words could reach up, a stomach growled; “Looks like... I’m not the one who’s hungry..”
————-
“So, you’re a human- from another world.”
“I mean.. I guess so- never knew something like the digital world existed; despite how much time I spend on the internet..”
Whatever problems this fire man.. Meramon, Sabrina found out, had against her sneaking into his home-were set aside. The human girl sat on a stone near a river, beating away a smaller rock with another-
She was trying to make a spear head. This is were her creative side comes into play- they need food; and the best source for it was this river. See why the fire being refused to go anywhere near it.
Meramon sat far from the river, yet they still had small talk. “I been to the human world once, long ago..” he seemed thoughtful “I wonder how she’s doing..”
“Really..?” A grunt escaped her mouth as she got up and looked for some vine she could use to tie things together. “What was she like..?” The rock was fairly sharp from scratching it against the stone she was sitting on.
“Small, and frail looking..” he hummed “but she was a good person.”
“You make it sound like she dead.” Sabrina looked back at Meramon with a side glance.
Meramon was now deep in thought; Recalling the small child- remembering how he ended up back in the digital world. “There was a fight; I was in it.” He said looking at his hands “I wanted to protect her.. I needed to protect her.”
“Must have been a good friend”
“The best.”
——————
“One.. two.. three-!”
A spear zipped through the air, and splashed in the water- nearly missing a fish. It had been a while since Sabrina had been this active, she could already feel her chest burn for the need of oxygen.
“One.. just one.. small fish..” she gasped “please- just let me get something that’s not small-!”
She could possibly eat the small fish if prepared properly; but it won’t be much. She also can’t forget that’s she spear fishing for another person.
That small fish won’t do.
“Like.. I know you’re made of fire..” she turned around “But a little help here..?”
Making a noise of not wanting to get anywhere near water, Meramon stood up. Slowly inching closer to the human to see if he actually can be of help. Perhaps.. he could make the jump out of the water..?
Looking into the river he hummed, then with a shout “Blazing Flame!” Once he sighted a rather large fish. The fire ball zipped past Sabrina and made contact with the water- making it bubble from the heat. In unexpected surprise, the fish actually jumped out of the water.
Thinking fast, And a hard throw, The human’s weapon has hit; However it only pushed the fish on land. That was rather fine, though. As long as the fish doesn’t go anywhere, it’s considered caught!
“That.. worked-?” The girl smiled, “That actually worked-?!” She cheered, hands in the air “let’s do that again!” Jumping over stones to cross the river, she quickly grabbed and held tightly to the odd looking fish- She was going to need to wash her clothing later.
After some time; Sabrina looked up, Shaded eyes trying to see what position the sun was at, but despite not being able to see it- it felt like it was around noon.
She was skimming her fish, all the while she watched Meramon grab his half and literally cooked it in his hand. “Hey- aren’t you going to.. you know.. remove the scales..?”
Before she even get an answer, Meramon was already eating the cooked fish. “Hmm-?”
“Never mind.”
———————
Night time rolled around, as difficult as today was; She felt good. Definitely was going to hurt later because of all that muscle usage, However.
She was back in the cave, Guessing she was now sharing a home with a living fire being. They both help each other, they won’t go hungry- and she’ll be safe and warm. Taking out that strange device from before, she stared at it.
Listening to the breathing from the other side of the cave wall, Meramon was definitely asleep- but this felt strange. Does she know this Digimon..? Had she known a Digimon before-?
Maybe.
Just maybe.
Though, Sabrina still needs to find a way home. Here’s hoping that Meramon can help her.

For the week of 4 March 2019
Quick Bits:
A Walk Through Hell #8 gets creepier as Paul tells his story, raising huge questions of how deep a conspiracy may go to have covered up his brutal history. Garth Ennis, Goran Sudžuka, Ive Svorcina, and Rob Steen are delivering one hell of an atmospheric horror story with this series.
| Published by AfterShock
Tumblr media
Amazing Spider-Man #16.HU is really another prelude to the “Hunted” event, but this one gets its branding and special interstitial “.HU” suffix, from Nick Spencer, Iban Coello, Edgar Delgado, and Joe Caramagna. This issue follows Black Cat as she is sent to free the Owl from Taskmaster and Black Ant to square things away with Hammerhead. It does a good bit to redeem Felicia’s behaviour of recent years, explaining exactly why she’s more or less been acting out of character as a hardened criminal kingpin.
| Published by Marvel
Tumblr media
Astro Hustle #1 is a pretty good start to this space opera from Jai Nitz, Tom Reilly, Ursula Decay, and Crank! It reminds me a lot of Barbarella crossed with Sword of the Swashbucklers, mixing space and pirates with some oblique sociopolitical commentary. Also maybe a bit of The Incal. This issue largely introduces us to Chen Andalou (yeah, I’m not sure if there’s a significance to the Un Chien Andalou reference) and the band of pirates he falls in with and it’s rather entertaining. Reilly’s art reminds me a bit of Moritat, Goran Parlov, and Goran Sudžuka and it works very well for the story.

Tumblr media
Avengers #16 continues the war of the vampires. I really like the new design for Ghost Rider from David Marquez. It’s more in line with how Vengeance used to be portrayed and the flame and shadow from Marquez and Erick Arciniega really works for a harder edged version of the character.
| Published by Marvel
Tumblr media
Avengers: No Road Home #4 sees Sean Izaakse and Marcio Menyz begin their three issues handling art duties and it’s gorgeous. Like Paco Medina, Juan Vlasco, and Jesus Aburtov for the first three issues, the artists are really giving this story their all and delivering some incredible artwork. Great layouts and panel compositions as we get to see Nyx’s own side of the story.

Batman #66 resumes “Knightmares” with an issue of the Question trying to get to the bottom of Selina leaving Bruce at the proverbial altar. Illustrated by Jorge Fornés, with colours from Dave Stewart, it leans hard into Year One imagery to begin with, evoking David Mazzucchelli, and just goes through Selina’s history with Bruce from there.

Black Hammer ‘45 #1 expands the Black Hammer universe out further with the addition of a Blackhawks analogue, along with nods to Enemy Ace and Rocket Red, from Jeff Lemire, Ray Fawkes, Matt Kindt, Sharlene Kindt, and Marie Enger. There’s a compelling mystery set up across the present and the past regarding the Black Hammer Squadron’s final mission and the art from the Kindts is gorgeous.

The Black Order #5 concludes the series focusing on Ebony Maw’s betrayal, the end of the Grandmaster’s game, and Carlos Magno, Scott Hanna, Jay David Ramos, and Dono Sánchez-Almara providing the artwork. This has been an interesting series, telling a relatively simple story of the Black Order executing a contract to topple the Sinnarian Emperor, but Derek Landy has been telling it through issues each largely from the viewpoint of each of one of the members of the Black Order. It’s been a good insight into what makes these villains tick.

Blossoms 666 #2 continues to be an entertaining read from Cullen Bunn, Laura Braga, Matt Herms, and Jack Morelli. This chapter lightly deals with the fallout from the disappearance of Ethel and Reggie, while setting up Betty to investigate. The story is definitely taking a slow burn approach, but it’s quite compelling. The horror of a devil cult infiltrating a small town vibe going on is wonderful.

Champions #3 goes in a few directions as the new bigger team get some training in, an enemy from Sam’s past comes calling, Dust apparently didn’t get sucked into the Age of X-Man and is dealing with anti-mutant hysteria, and Miles is racked with guilt over his decision. I love the layers that Jim Zub is adding to the script and the art from Steven Cummings, Marcio Menyz, and Federico Blee captures the youthful action very well.

Conan the Barbarian #4 might be my favourite issue of this series yet with glorious guest art from Gerardo Zaffino, evoking memories of his father’s work on Savage Sword, and presenting a gritty, visceral, and dark tale of King Conan alongside Jason Aaron, Matthew Wilson, and Travis Lanham. The idea of Conan becoming sick over peace is humorous and there’s a wonderful nod to the Punisher.

The Curse of Brimstone #12 brings the series to an end with a final confrontation between Brimstone and a member of the “home office”, Infernal. The revelations about who Infernal is a twisted alternate version of is interesting, as well as their means of ingress into the regular DCU. The series also goes out with a bang with the very impressive artwork from Denys Cowan, John Stanisci, and Rain Beredo. Cowan is a legend and that shines through in this final arc. I do hope, though, that we see Brimstone and the effects of this series pop up somewhere else in the DCU in the future.

Deadly Class #37 continues “Never Go Back” with the spotlight shifted back to Quan and Kenji, bringing back Saya in a pretty big way. The action in Wes Craig’s artwork (with colours from Jordan Boyd) is pretty much peerless.

Deathstroke #41 serves as a prelude to the “Terminus Agenda” crossover with Teen Titans, with Slade a fugitive in Gotham, trying to figure out the reason behind one of his recent contracts, from Christopher Priest, Fernando Pasarin, Cam Smith, Sean Parsons, Jeromy Cox, Carrie Strachan, and Willie Schubert. There are some interesting mysteries being set up here, even as Slade is being targeted.

Die #4 is another brilliant issue from Kieron Gillen, Stephanie Hans, and Clayton Cowles. The depth of the storytelling, character and world building, and overall narrative is staggering in this series. The amount of thought and attention to detail that seem to have gone into constructing the story is just amazing, as what feels like a fully-realized fantasy world cognizant of itself comes tumbling out.

Tumblr media
Eclipse #13 begins the final arc of the series, from Zack Kaplan, Giovanni Timpano, Flavio Dispenza, and Troy Peteri. If the spark lit in this issue is any indication, it looks as if the series is going to end in fire with a lot of death.

Giant Days #48 gives us that rare issue also illustrated by John Allison, I think for the first time since the original series, for a wedding. Very funny look at some of Susan’s hang-ups and Daisy confronted by possible feelings for Esther.
| Published by Boom Entertainment / BOOM! Box
Tumblr media
The Girl in the Bay #2 gets weirder as the younger Kathy navigates, from her perspective, the future. Melting doppelgangers, creepy old guys that killed you, ghosts of rock and roll legends, and flat screen televisions stymie her as the mystery deepens. This is some intriguing stuff from JM DeMatteis, Corin Howell, James Devlin, and Clem Robins.
| Published by Dark Horse / Berger Books
Tumblr media
The Green Lantern #5 is more glorious madness from Grant Morrison, Liam Sharp, Steve Oliff, and Tom Orzechowski. Easily one of my favourite things to read every month. This issue dives headlong into Hal’s test of recruitment to the Blackstars, a trial of having to survive a gauntlet across the vampire planet, Vorr. Though definitely part of a larger narrative, I’m still impressed by how this series is being constructed through largely satisfying, mostly self-contained stories. And, of course, the astounding artwork from Sharp and Oliff. There’s also some wonderful vampire Easter eggs in this one.
| Published by DC Comics
Tumblr media
Immortal Hulk #14 is one hell of an issue, burying Thunderbolt Ross (again) and giving us the reunion of Bruce and Betty. All with glorious guest art from Kyle Hotz, delivering some of his best artwork pretty much ever. Dark, moody, and evocative. This is a big one, once again underlining how sick, twisted, and downright evil General Fortean and the forces hunting Bruce really are, even if they’re supposedly the “good guys”.
| Published by Marvel
Tumblr media
Justice League #19 begins the “The Sixth Dimension” arc from Scott Snyder, Jorge Jimenez, Alejandro Sanchez, and Tom Napolitano, as the League tries to get help from Mr. Mxyzptlk in regards to the broader problems with the Source Wall, Perpetua, and the nefarious plans of the Legion of Doom. Interesting bits of humour in this issue, especially since the end moments give us a rather dark turn.
| Published by DC Comics

Killmonger #5 concludes what has been an excellent series reintroducing a movie-influenced Killmonger back into the Marvel universe from Bryan Hill, Juan Ferreyra, and Joe Sabino. This finale shows just how brutal and calculating he can be when exacting revenge.

Morning in America #1 is the debut of a new ‘80s teen horror drama from most of the Kim & Kim team of Magdalene Visaggio, Claudia Aguirre, and Zakk Saam, with Aguirre providing full illustrations on this series not just colours. It’s good, setting up our lead characters nicely and presenting a compelling mystery for the disappearances of the children.

Oberon #2 launches Bonnie on her quest, first testing her with a labyrinth, while Oberon and his man-servant deal with some complications. I’m loving the artwork from Miloš Slavković, who is proving equally as adept with fantasy as he does with the sci-fi of Lightstep.
| Published by AfterShock
Tumblr media
Red Sonja #2 is a bit more traditional in its approach than the first issue subverting some of the conventions of sword and sorcery, but is no less entertaining as Sonja prepares to defend Hyrkania from the Zamoran invaders. Mirko Colak’s art makes it seem like he was born to draw this sort of adventure.

Ronin Island #1 is an entertaining debut from Greg Pak, Giannis Milonogiannis, Irma Kniivila, and Simon Bowland, featuring an island of survivors who think they’re the only remnants left from the collapse of the Japanese shogunate. Great art from Milonogiannis and Kniivila, along with a very interesting twist as a cliffhanger.
| Published by BOOM! Studios

Self/Made #4 makes another turn as Rebecca manages to “fix” Amala’s data files and brings her programming online in the real world. I love what Mathew Groom, Eduardo Ferigato, Marcelo Costa, Mariana Calil, and Troy Peteri are doing with this series. It’s very good sci-fi, populated with some compelling characters, and raising some important questions about self-determination, creation, and the purpose of life.

The Six Million Dollar Man #1 is a rather light-hearted take on the franchise from Christopher Hastings, David Hahn, Roshan Kurichiyanil, and Ariana Maher (with special thanks to Zack Davisson). Nice bits of humour in the start to this spy thriller.

Tumblr media
Star Wars #62 begins “The Scourging of Shu-Torun” and what I believe is the final arc from Kieron Gillen. This issue is largely a gathering of the team, with Leia laying out the plan for the regular crew and then going on a recruitment drive of many of the faces that we’ve seen throughout Gillen’s run

Star Wars: Age of Republic - Padmé Amidala #1 is another one-shot set during the Clone Wars, from Jody Houser, Cory Smith, Wilton Santos, Walden Wong, Marc Deering, Java Tartaglia, and Travis Lanham. It briefly touches on Padmé’s relationship with Anakin, but largely deals with attempting to secure a partnership with an unaligned world for the Republic. Things naturally don’t go as well as planned.

Star Wars: Vader - Dark Visions #1 begins a mini-series written by Dennis Hallum and illustrated by different artists per issue, essentially giving us standalone stories from different perspectives on Darth Vader. This first one is from Paolo Villanelli and Arif Prianto, lettered by Joe Caramagna, and is told from the perspective of an inhabitant of an unnamed world that’s been ravaged by a kaiju. It’s a different take on Star Wars, but the art is wonderful.

Tumblr media
Vampirella vs. Reanimator #3 sees things get significantly worse for the planet as Herbert West enables Mictecacihuatl’s and Vampirella raises her husband to try to stop her. Things don’t exactly go to plan. I’m still loving the black and white art with spot colours from Blacky Shepherd, it really gives the series a unique visual feel.

Vindication #2 complicates thing a lot more, delving into Chip’s past and revealing that there’s definitely something shady about Turn, though there are hints that whatever problems he’s got himself in it might be due to protecting his criminal brother. MD Marie, Carlos Miko, Dema Jr., Thiago Goncalves, and Troy Peteri are doing a great job of creating a compelling crime story here, showing that pretty much no one in this story is squeaky clean.

Witchblade #12 closes out this arc, mostly, and sets up a new world as a spell to get them out of their predicament goes awry. Though this story continues to move at a relatively slow pace, Caitlin Kittredge, Roberta Ingranata, Bryan Valenza, and Troy Peteri are still delivering a compelling, engrossing story as they build Alex’s rapport with the Witchblade and throw some unique complication at her.

Young Justice #3 gives us a touching reunion of Impulse and Superboy, before explaining how Conner got to Gemworld. It still doesn’t explain anything about why these pre-Flashpoint variations (other than a possible hint that Superboy isn’t “our” Superboy, although it’s presented in such a way that it seems more like in-story misdirection), but it’s still entertaining. Brian Michael Bendis, Patrick Gleason, Viktor Bogdanovic, Jonathan Glapion, Alejandro Sanchez, Chris Sotomayor, Hi-Fi, Carlos M. Mangual, and Josh Reed continue to slowly tease out the main plot on Gemworld while giving character-specific flashbacks.

Big Bad BeetleBorgs: 10 Facts You Never Knew | ScreenRant
Children's entertainment forever changed in 1993 thanks to Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers. With low production costs and booming toy sales, Saban Entertainment was sitting on the most successful television model ever. The lucrative success of Saban's Power Rangers eventually opened the door for other live-action kids' programming. One '90s show that millennials recall is Saban's Big Bad BeetleBorgs, which ran for 88 episodes on Fox from 1996 to 1998. The basic story was three kids were given beetle-themed superpowers so they could battle evildoers summoned from comic books. But as well-remembered as BeetleBorgs is, there's still a lot about it that people don't know.
RELATED: 15 Greatest Power Rangers Rip-Offs
10 Based on two Japanese shows
Tumblr media
It's no secret Saban hit pay dirt with Power Rangers. Their economical formula — mixing footage from the Toei productions with new, in-house footage — was raking in the dough. They implemented the same strategy with Masked Rider and VR Troopers. And like the latter show, BeetleBorgs' battle footage was lifted from multiple Japanese series — Heavy Shell B-Fighter and its direct sequel B-Fighter Kabuto. When BeetleBorgs entered its second and final season, it became BeetleBorgs Metallix. Their new suits, weapons, and villains all came from B-Fighter Kabuto. To tell the stock and original footage apart, remember that Japanese shows were shot on film as opposed to video.
9 The Rappin' Granny
Tumblr media
Something BeetleBorgs did that its Japanese counterparts did not was show the kids' families. We often saw Roland's (Green Hunter BeetleBorg) mother Nano hanging around. She was quite the character too. When she wasn't running the kids' favorite hangout Zoom Comics, she was practicing martial arts. In real life, her actor Vivian Smallwood was well-known for her rapping skills. She was so talented and beloved, she earned the nickname of the Rappin' Granny. Aside from BeetleBorgs, she appeared in shows like Everybody Hates Chris and Malcolm in the Middle. Unfortunately, Smallwood passed away at the age of 84 in 2017.
8 "Flabber, you are not the weakest link."
Tumblr media
The pubescent heroes of BeetleBorgs were aided by a gang of monsters living at a local haunted house called Hillhurst Mansion. This included a werewolf, a mummy, a Frankenstein's Monster-type character, a vampire, a living statue, and a trio of spirits. The most important Hillhurster was Flabber, an eccentric phantasm with genie-like powers. He bore a striking resemblance to both Elvis Presley and Jay Leno, with intentional emphasis on the former. There's some Liberace thrown in for good measure too. His actor Billy Forester states on his Twitter he was a champion on the US version of The Weakest Link.

7 The real reason why the show ended
Tumblr media
Plenty of shows get cancelled because of low ratings, but BeetleBorgs was not one of them. BeetleBorgs ended with Metallix because Saban Entertainment exhausted the Japanese footage. B-Fighter and B-Fighter Kabuto had a total of 103 episodes and a short movie between them. Of course, BeetleBorgs was not a 1:1 adaptation so they used only so much raw footage from the original shows. As a result, the second season ended on an unresolved cliffhanger. Interestingly, the Toei franchise that Heavy Shell B-Fighter and its sequel were part of — the Metal Heroes Series — ended due to low ratings for B-Fighter Kabuto.
6 Alex Borstein played a monster in one episode
Tumblr media
You may know her best from Family Guy, MADtv, and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, but comedian Alex Borstein has a history with Saban properties. After playing Queen Machina in Power Rangers Zeo, in addition to one-off villains — Bloom of Doom, Lipsyncher, Madame Woe — in previous Power Rangers seasons, Borstein lent her voice to the monster Cataclaws in the episode "Yo Ho Borgs." In said episode, Flabber makes a flub and brings Captain Blackbeard back to life so he can help the kids with a school project. Unfortunately for the BeetleBorgs, Cataclaws poses as Blackbeard in an attempt to get the kiddos.

5 Easter eggs for Power Rangers fans
Tumblr media
With both Power Rangers and Big Bad BeetleBorgs being owned by Saban Entertainment, it's of no surprise there are some Easter eggs. Commonly seen in the background at Zoom Comics was the head of King Sphinx, a monster from the first season of Mighty Mophin' Power Rangers. Another Easter egg for fans was when Green Hunter BeetleBorg and ShadowBorg were seen among the Machine Empire's army in Power Rangers Wild Force episode "Forever Red." Costume recycling was very common during this era of Saban television, which explains why fans would see enemies in future episodes despite the fact they were already defeated.
4 Spider-Man appeared in BeetleBorgs
Tumblr media
In episode 19 "Convention Dimension", the kids attend San Diego Comic-Con. When they're not battling the bad guys, they run into Spider-Man. Sadly, it's just someone in costume. But how did BeetleBorgs get away with the blatant cameo? At the time, Spider-Man: The Animated Series was airing on the same network, so it was safe to use his image. This also explains why there's someone dressed as The Tick in one scene. While watching this episode, one may ask why San Diego Comic-Con seems so lifeless. Even dull. Well, remember it's 1996. This was long before the event became such a spectacle.
3 The Power Rangers/BeetleBorgs crossover that never happened
Tumblr media
It was good marketing for Saban to do crossovers between its shows. Yet BeetleBorgs never stepped foot in the Power Rangers series. However, there were plans at one point to do a crossover between Saban's mainstay and BeetleBorgs. There's even a photo of Blake Foster in costume as the Blue Turbo Ranger with the Hillhurst monsters. Alas, the televised crossover never came to fruition for some unknown reason. Instead, Acclaim Comics published a one-time issue in 1997 called Power Rangers Turbo vs. BeetleBorgs Metallix. There it's established that the Power Rangers are fictional characters who the BeetleBorgs recognize from television.

2 A tale of two Red Strikers
Tumblr media
Shannon Chandler (Jo/Red Striker BeetleBorg) departed after the first 39 episodes simply because she wanted to leave. Rather than replacing Jo with a new character, another actress (Brittany Konarzewski) assumed the same role. The writers created a bizarre storyline where an awry spell alters Jo's physical appearance and voice. The spell needed time to wear off, but in the meantime, Flabber cast another spell that caused others to see Jo only as her former self. To her fellow BeetleBorgs and the Hillhursters, Jo continued to look and talk like Konarzewski. It's worth noting that in Heavy Shell B-Fighter, Jo's Japanese equivalent was also replaced halfway into the season.
1 VR Troopers was cancelled because of BeetleBorgs
Tumblr media
Saban's VR Troopers was already using up to three different Japanese shows' battle footage. They needed more once they were through with Superhuman Machine Metalder, Dimensional Warrior Spielban, and Space Sheriff Shaider. If things had been different, Heavy Shell B-Fighter would have been the fourth, and scenes from that would have been used in the potential third season of VR Troopers. Unfortunately for VR Troopers, Saban opted to cancel the aforesaid series altogether, and they made another show from B-Fighter. The fact that VR Troopers' toy sales were not living up to expectations did not help matters either. Thus, Big Bad BeetleBorgs was born, and VR Troopers was over.

Holy Easter Eggs! How 'The Lego Batman Movie' Celebrates the Caped Crusader's Big-Screen History
Tumblr media
Batman v Superman in ‘The Lego Batman Movie’ (Warner Bros.)
One triumph of The Lego Batman Movie is its ability to simultaneously satirize and celebrate the legacy of the Dark Knight, a rich history spanning eight decades of comic books, TV shows, and, especially, films. From Will Arnett’s Christian Bale-inspired gravelly growl to callbacks to the 1940s serial, The Lego Batman Movie is overstuffed with cinematic references and inside jokes. Here are a dozen of our favorites to look out for as you head out to see the film this weekend. (Caution: There are a few minor spoilers below.)
The Joker’s Squashed Schemes In the opening moments, the Clown Prince of Crime boasts to the pilot of a hijacked plane that his latest plot against Gotham is foolproof. The pilot immediately calls out the Joker, pointing out how his previous big-screen endeavors were thwarted by the Caped Crusaders, alluding to both 2008’s The Dark Knight and 1989’s Batman.
Pilot: Batman will stop you. He always stops you.
Joker: No, he doesn’t.
Pilot: What about that time with the two boats?
Joker: This is better than the two boats… Trust me, Batman will never see this coming.
Pilot: Like the time with the parade and the Prince music?
Batman’s Phases During an early scene in stately Wayne Manor, Alfred catches Batman staring longingly at photos of his lost family. “Were you looking at the old family pictures again?” the devoted butler asks of his brooding charge. “I’m concerned… I’ve seen you go through similar phases in 2016, 2012, 2008, 2005, and 1997, 1995, 1992, and 1989… and that weird one in 1966.” As he ticks off each year, we see Lego-fied versions of the corresponding films: Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, The Dark Knight Rises, The Dark Knight, Batman Begins, Batman and Robin (complete with Clooney’s Bat-nipple costume), Batman Forever, Batman Returns, Batman, and the 1966 Batman movie based on the vintage TV series (which is shown in live-action — a scene featuring the created-for-the-show character King Tut, who also figures in The Lego Batman Movie).
Tumblr media
‘The Dark Knight’/’The Lego Batman Movie’ (Warner Bros.)
Later, in a similar montage, the new Gotham police commissioner, Barbara Gordon, gives a presentation about how Batman has been patrolling the streets a “very, very, very, very, very long time” without stopping the crime problem. Bricky vignettes of classic comic covers, and movie and TV scenes flash by from his 78-year-history, including many of the movies mentioned above as well as his debut issue in Detective Comics, Batman: The Animated Series, Frank Miller’s The Dark Knight Returns graphic novel, and the Caped Crusader’s earliest screen incarnation, the 1943 Columbia serial.
Batman’s Phrases The film’s dialogue is peppered with references to Batman’s previous screen outings, and one of the zaniest comes during the opening battle between the Dark Knight and the Joker’s army. Before launching his attack, Batman says, “Let’s get nuts” — just like Michael Keaton did in this scene in Tim Burton’s 1989 Batman.

The Jerry Maguire Connection Batman unwinds after a tough day of crime fighting by watching rom-coms in his home theater. One of his favorites: Jerry Maguire, especially the famous “You complete me/You had me at hello” exchange. This is a nod to one of the most memorable scenes in The Dark Knight, when Batman interrogates Joker, prompting the immortal rejoinder, “You complete me.”

Batman v Superman Beginning with the opening credits, a running joke throughout Lego Batman is the Caped Crusader’s perceived rivalry with Superman. During his initial confrontation with Joker, Batman insists that “Superman is my greatest enemy,” which the Joker dismisses. Later, when Batman comes calling to the Fortress of Solitude, he tells Superman, “I’m not here to throw down or anything…” to which Supes retorts, “I would crush you.”
Tumblr media
‘Batman v Superman’/’The Lego Batman Movie’ (Warner Bros.)
Speaking of Superman Aside from liberal callbacks to the Batman filmography, Lego Batman also pays homage to 1978’s Superman: The Movie. The Fortress of Solitude, modeled after the Christopher Reeve film version, features a doorbell chime using John Williams’s seminal score. Batman triggers a hologram of Superman’s dad, Jor-El, which looks like a Lego Marlon Brando. And Lego Batman‘s main plot is a direct result of General Zod being exiled to the Phantom Zone, which figures in both Superman and Superman II.
Tumblr media
Superman answers the door at his Fortress of Solitude (Warner Bros.)
Squad Goals A more recent movie skewered by Lego Batman is 2016’s Suicide Squad. During Joker and his cronies’ initial attack on Gotham, Killer Croc swims under a nuclear reactor, affixes a bomb, and then exclaims, “Yay! I got to do something” — a dig at the character’s unimpressive showing in Squad. Later, when Gotham is faced with a bigger menace, Batman pooh-poohs the idea of recruiting some of his rogues to help in the fight: “Using villains to fight villains? What a dumb idea.” Finally, at the end, Barbara Gordon/Batgirl, tries to convince Bats that he needs a team. To which he retorts: “Who? Seal Team 6? Fox Force Five? Suicide Squad?” [And big props to the screenwriters for slipping in that Fox Force Five mention; of course, Pulp Fiction/Fox Force Five alumna Uma Thurman also played Poison Ivy in Batman and Robin.]
Holy Hoarding, Batman The Batcave is bursting with Bat-gear, and it will take repeated viewings to catalogue all the cinematic vehicles parked there. But we spotted several the first time around, including the Batsub from Batman Returns, several Batjets, and nearly every iteration of the Batmobile, from Christopher Nolan’s Tumbler of the 2000s, to the various versions from the 1980s and ’90s movies, to Adam West’s 1966 classic. There’s also a container of “useless” shark-repellent Bat-spray from the ’66 Batman.
Tumblr media
Batmobiles in the Batcave (Warner Bros.)
Na-na-na-na-na-na-na Batman! Along with the Nolan-Bale Dark Knight trilogy and the Burton-Keaton Bat-flicks, Lego Batman really embraces the camptastic 1960s movie and TV show starring West and Burt Ward. The soundtrack is loaded with cues of Neil Hefti’s seminal “Batman Theme,” from a sample during Batman’s villain-dispatching song (watch below), to the horn on the Batmobile, to the way Batman says no-no-no-no-no-no.
youtube
Aside from all the ’66-spawned sight gags noted above, there’s a meta moment before Lego Batman and Robin tangle with the baddies at the film’s climax where Batman says, “Together we’re going to punch these guys so hard words describing the impact will spontaneously materialize.” Pow. Bif. Boom.
Two-Face Is Back, Baby One of the great wrongs Lego Batman rights is giving Billy Dee Williams the opportunity to finally play Two-Face. Williams was cast as Harvey Dent in the 1989 Batman movie with an eye to eventually playing the villain in a sequel. But by the time that era’s Caped Crusader got around to fighting Two-Face in 1995’s Batman Forever, Tommy Lee Jones had been recast in the role.
Tumblr media
Billy Dee Williams as Harvey Dent in ‘Batman’ and Two-Face in ‘The Lego Batman Movie’ (Warner Bros.)
Bane Lego Batman’s Bane is much beefier than the Dark Knight Rises version, but he still sports that fur-lined coat and speaks with a weird accent in homage to Tom Hardy’s character.
Tumblr media
Tom Hardy as Bane in ‘The Dark Knight Rises’/Bane in ‘The Lego Batman Movie’ (Warner Bros.)
The DC-Marvel Rivalry Lives OK, this one’s not specifically a callback to another Batman-based movie, or even a DC film, but we had to flag nonetheless. As the original crime-fighting tech billionaire, Bruce Wayne doesn’t have time for pretenders. Thus, we get his secret password for entering the Batcave: Iron Man sucks! Burn.

Crate Digging at Strictly Discs, Madison WI
Brainchild at Strictly Discs
Related to Elements: Crate Digging, DJ
Time doesn't matter whilst crate digging.  Well it shouldn't, but this Easter Weekend, family obligations took precedence over digging through records despite my strong protest.  Traveling across the state gave me the opportunity to hook up with fellow crate digger brainchild for a short excursion.  Our reluctant wives gave us a stern look and an hour time limit to check out the local Madison shops before we had to pack up and head out with our family to see our crazy relatives.  1 hour minus drive time to Strictly Discs gave us a mere 45 minutes.  We parked on the street and the meter had 37 minutes left from the last guy, so that was our real time limit.  I hate time restrictions when I'm in my happy place but there was nothing I could do about it, I had to dig fast.
When we walked in the store I saw how small it was, so I realized 37 minutes was plenty of time to flip through the stacks.  It was fairly crowded for it's size, there wasn't much room for you to maneuver between the sections.  Every time someone wanted to walk by me I had to suck in my gut and press against the stacks of wax to make room for them to pass.  There was a dirty old hippy sprawled out on the floor in front of the bargain bin section making it impossible for me to peruse the cheapies.  No big deal, because I could see even though there wasn't much room to move, what records they did have were really nice.  A lot of great rock graced the back wall and they had a section just for Numero records, so I was happy.  But the clock was ticking so I focused on the Hip Hop section as soon as the space wasn't occupied by another crate digger.
Suddenly I spotted this...
Da King & I - Contemporary Jeep Music
BA BOOM!  My heart jumped, I lost my cool and shouted in the store "Oh my GOD, Da King & I's Album for only 18 bucks!!!"  From that outburst I got a leer from a long hair in the death metal section and a sly smile from the store clerk who was amused by my bliss.  I couldn't help myself, I had been looking for this album for years and I never found it priced reasonably.
"If you guys like good Hip Hop, you should check out our basement." the store clerk said with a grin.
"Basement?" replied Brainchild.  He had been there before but was unaware the store was bigger then the crowded first floor.
Brainchild immediately went down the stairs while I stayed put and continued quickly flipping through the remainder of the Hip Hop stack.  After all, if that was there, then there could be some other grails in the same stack that I didn't want to miss out on.
20 minutes to go, and I finally headed down the stairs.  As I went down, I passed a few bargain shelves, halfway between the basement and the first floor.  It seemed like the owners took every square inch of retail space to display their records.
At the bottom of the stairs the basement opened up into a large room literally loaded with records.  Brainchild stared at me with a big smirk and said, "Dude, this ain't even all of it, there's another huge room over there"
Then it became crystal clear that I didn't have nearly enough time to even scrape the surface of this store.  Hell, I could have spent an entire day digging there and still wouldn't have even come close to making a dent.  We had both seriously underestimated just how vast and deep this store's record collection was, on of all days, Holy Saturday.
It was now or never, so I got uber-focused and headed directly over to the soundtrack section quickly looking to fill some holes in my collection when I found this...
Benji Original Soundtrack
"OH SNAP, I have been looking for this forever!!!!" I squealed.  I literally jumped up in the air and clicked my heals together like a kid in a candy store.  Yes, the Benji Soundtrack is dope!  I saw the movie on Netflix with my kids years ago and it became clear to me that this soundtrack must reside in my collection.  It's got some fantastic 'chase-scene disco' and funky country breaks just begging to be tapped into on it.  Crate diggers should not sleep on the funk that resides on the grooves of this record.
"What time is it?"  asked BC. "It's been 36 minutes."
"Damnit, I gotta feed the meter.  Got a quarter??" "No, sorry. " I said with a blank stare while flipping furiously through the jazz section.
He ran up the stairs, got change, and flew out the front door while I milked the remainder of our time.  "Come on, he lives in Madison, he can come back any day, so I gotta stay a little longer" I justified.
I had collected about 5 records from the dig so far and I knew I had to prioritize and put back a few especially after I saw this...
Brian Eno  Jon Hopkins Leo Abrahams - Small Craft On A Milk Sea
"New Eno, NICE!!!"  It's an expensive record for how new it is, but as with so many Brian Eno albums it is absolutely well worth the money, so I reluctantly put back a few other finds and we made our way to the checkout.  (read more about these albums at cratediggers.co)
It was a great dig, we both got a few golden eggs that day.  Over all I'd have to rate Strictly Discs a solid 9/10.   It's deceptively huge, it's got some of the best records I have ever seen, and if time wasn't an issue that day (or money) I would have cleaned em out of their best wax.  Next time you are in Madison, bring 10 bucks in quarters for the parking meter, give yourself a full day of time, and flip through their hoards of wax.  You'll go home with a big smile on your face and some very special records for your crates.
