My mother took this photo of me and I kind of like it. 

She caught me staring at this massive specimen of a Thuja occidentalis.  

If you’ve ever seen large specimens before than you know that they can be up to 1,000 years old easily when they look as thick as an old growth white pine.

Another interesting thing is that this is a classic example of what settlers called a true phoenix tree. The species is known for persisting through any initial damage taken. It can lose the cambium on half of the tree and still live with a sliver of bark/cambium left as long as it reaches to the roots. It can also produce root suckers if things get really bad.
