i think the way that darry and soda mainly refer to pony as ‘our brother’ in throwing in the towel is so beautiful but i don’t know how to formulate it into words. and the hopeless way that darry says “what if they lock our brother away” makes me think that he’s thinking about the possibility of pony turning into dally. it’s unlikely, but the thought lingers because prison does change a person.

Darry saying “I was born a grease, so grease is all that I get / Another hard-knock lesson that I’ll never forget” is literally the most fascinating character moment to me. Because obviously Darry isn’t speaking for all greasers, especially when he clearly wants more for Pony than what he himself got, but it’s self-deprecating in a way that’s personal and bitter.

He was just *so close* and he thought that maybe, yeah, he could go find something better for himself. Only for it to come crashing down around him, like the universe slamming the door in his face and reminding him of what his place is. I just think that before the Curtis parents’ death, Darry had his own version of “Far Away from Tulsa”, if that makes any sense.

But back to the lyric, Darry’s just another victim of a ruthless cycle among the lower class, where bad luck can utterly ruin whatever chances you made for yourself. No matter how talented you are, how hard you work, it takes five seconds for all of it to be ripped away, and it doesn’t even have to be your fault. It snuffs out your spark so quickly, and suddenly you believe that you really are destined to stay trapped in your hometown forever.

Absolutely ILL at how the aspect of Ponyboy Darry chooses to highlight in his self-proclaimed darkest hour when he’s wracked with guilt over how he’s ruined his brother’s future (and, depending on your interpretation, the aspect of him Darry thinks could take him far in life) is not his brains, which is something that’s often used to set him apart from the other greasers (or prove that he could even have a future) and something Darry repeatedly places a lot of value on for both being a good trait but also what it means in Ponyboy’s specific situation, but rather his heart. His personality and softness and good intent, something that makes Ponyboy an outcast within the outcasts, that he’s told to change for his own sake and that so few people understand, and if you ask Ponyboy Darry’s included in that, but rather than the cold disapproving unfeeling no-nonsense wall Ponyboy believes he is, Darry recognizes that inherent goodness in his brother and places so much value in it that he chooses to highlight it as one of if not the best trait of Ponyboy’s when Ponyboy believes that barely anyone else understands that part of him and Darry least of all. These brothers love each other so much they just don’t know how to communicate it I’m going to be sick
