Now that the chest and shoulders are warmed up, we'll add to the intensity of the stretch. Come to the front body and place two blocks at the lowest height next to the mid-upper ribcage below the armpits. Place the hands on the blocks with the fingers flat on the block rather than curled over the edge. (This will help stretch the underside of the forearms -also a necessary component for plow with the hands on the back.) Spread the fingers and press the inner hands down to draw the shoulderblades toward the spine. Keep widening and lifting the chest, without actually lifting the lower ribs off the floor - this is NOT cobra pose. Next, take the blocks to their medium height, and finally their highest height, taking the same instructions. Stay and breathe. DETAIL + DEPTH. Part of a new series featuring key preparations, modifications, and variations dedicated to a single pose. This week dive deep into Halasana | Plow Pose. I am using this unnamed pose, which is a mix between bridge pose and viparita karani, as a hamstring, jalandhara bandha, and thoracic spine prep for plow pose. The head, neck and shoulders relationship replicates the work from the previous post of jalandhara bandha, but this time on the back and without the support of a tennis ball. Place a block at any of its three heights under the sacrum to lift the hips. Interlace the fingers below the hips or take a hold of the outer edges of a yoga mat and simultaneously roll the outer shoulders down while lifting the chest. This should also bring the shoulderblades toward the spine. Place a long 10' belt around the feet and the upper torso below the armpits, and bring the feet toward the head rather than keeping them over the hips, as if approaching plow pose. This will emphasize the stretch of the hamstrings. If necessary, use the hands to keep the belt from sliding down the back away from the upper chest. Press the feet back up into the resistance of the belt to strengthen the hamstrings and "teach" the mid-upper thoracic spine to absorb in and up rather than collapsing toward the floor.
