7 Days with Om
Day 1: My thoughts were centered around the "correct" way to chant. What should I sound like? How long do I hold each syllable? Throughout the practice I began to gain confidence and speak louder with each OM. Energy started to tingle through my lips and down my throat. By the end I felt confident and had no thought of wether I was right or wrong.
Day 2: It took me three "Om's" to feel settled and confident in my voice, I maintained the same feeling the entire time. My mind wandered curious of if my neighbors could hear me and what they might think. Throughout my body felt tingly, leaving me with a slight feeling of fatigue by the end of the practice. I had the though to work on opening a connection with divinity.
Day 3: Completed in two sessions while paddleboarding on the lake. This practice felt less intense in the energy department and I wonder if it was due to an increase in environmental distractions. Throughout the practice I felt closer to nature, as if it was responding and calling back. By the end I felt I lifted any fear of being heard, any judgement was released from my body, I felt accepted.
Day 4: Completed in child's pose. Comfortability in my voice in body right at the first OM. Variations in where energy was felt throughout the practice, often felt energy surging to my third eye chakra, nose, and lips. Also variation in intensity and pronunciation. After my practice, I felt an energy surge in my body and especially jaw.
Day 5: Started to pay more attention to why variation in OM occur. When "prep" breath is shallow and weak, my. chant is shallow and passionless. When my "prep" breath is full, my chant is powerful. Held a strong urge to run from body sensations throughout the practice. Made the note "feeling is different based on where tension/focus placed" and that I felt connected to my throat chakra.
Day 6: Completed alongside gentle yoga. Five minute practice went by fast. Noticed that when I held a flat back my chant felt deeper, stronger and allowed for an open chest.
Day 7: Throughout practice I was fidgety, my brain kept wandering back to the idea of somatic healing from the book "My Grandmother's Hands". I started out super low energy and ended the practice with an average level of energy.
Final Reflection: This is a practice I will do again, I enjoyed the challenge I felt at the beginning and the confidence I found towards the end. Feels personally profound to have thought about somatic healing at the end and I want to experiment and learn more about how chanting can be used to heal the body and nervous system.
