I was at arcade where the staff were telling people that if you microwaved your head, your eyes and teeth would glow. When I called the owner out on how that was incredibly dangerous to advise people to do, she threatened to shoot me.

I want to see if you were truly a helpless victim. Thoroughly mortified— you didn’t fight because you were frozen. You didn’t scream because you were afraid I’d hurt you. You came three times because you had to. Right?

Who will show up to my door, angel?

Thinking about being prepared for what’s going to happen but still not being able to fully suppress your fear of it.

You know you’re about to be hurt, you’ve known that this might happen from the start, and you thought you’d be ready to face it.

But now you’re exposed, feeling the cold air on your skin, at the whims of someone else, completely in their hands, in their power. Maybe they’re holding something sharp, something electric, something you know will hurt but can’t quite imagine how yet.

You try to be brave but your heart is racing. You try to stay still but you flinch as they come nearer. You felt so sure before, as they dragged you into this room, but now you’re having to ask yourself: what if you can’t withstand it? What if it’s just too much to bear?

I love subtle threats. A touch that lingers a little too long, fingers digging slightly too hard. Careful warnings laughed off as a joke, but character B reads between the lines.

Standing too close. Talking over B before they can speak. A calming smile as A plays with B's long hair, curling it around their fingers in a way that just gently tugs, all too easy to play off as an accident. All to easy to know who is in control.

Always watching. No matter how many people in the room, A's eyes never fail to find B.

When you grow up in abuse, first part of your life you have to pretend everything is fine and you're not in pain at all and this is normal and you're good, so your abusers can keep their secrets and not be outed as abusers (because your life is on the line and if you talk and they find out, consequences could be fatal). But then when you manage to get out of it and go out there and live in the world, you believe you'll finally get the chance to get the truth out there, to act true to your feelings and to say what you went through and for it to matter! You want a humanizing experience, you're no longer shackled by threats of abuse if you speak out and you want the truth to be out there, you want your experiences acknowledged!

And it turns out, nope, everyone still wants you to keep it down and act normal or you're not a part of society and you will still be ostracized if you say what happened because people prefer pretending it doesn't happen and they don't wanna hear about it.

First you have to act normal to protect yourself, then you have to act normal to protect everyone else. There is no way to live true to your feelings and experiences.
