Writing is staring at a sentence for ten minutes only to change the word "can" to the word "are."
A truly, deeply unserious exercise.

Ngl, while working on some of these snippets (and writing the fic on and off the past few months), I’m tempted to make an ask blog for Mr. Puzzles just so I can dump Mr. Puzzles-centric related responses for the fun of it, in order to write him more often (though likely a mix or 1st and 3rd) and maybe sketchy doodles, as I like (tormenting) him because he’s a bastard (affectionate).
But I will be posting that angst snippet tonight, and a silly one to be its opposite either tonight as well, or in the morning.

SOMETHING I JUST LEARNED FROM RESEARCH FOR A FIC:
The term "teddy bear" became commonly used in the early 20th century, specifically after the 1902 incident involving U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt. During a bear-hunting trip in Mississippi, Roosevelt reportedly refused to shoot a bear that had been captured and tied to a tree as a trophy. This incident was popularized by a political cartoon that depicted the event, and the story spread widely in the media. Subsequently, a Brooklyn candy shop owner named Morris Michtom created a stuffed bear toy and named it "Teddy's Bear" in honor of Roosevelt. The toy became wildly popular, leading to the term "teddy bear" entering common usage to describe such toys
-Summarized by ChatGPT
Plus, Roosevelt did not like the nickname Teddy! So interesting!!!!
OMG this is all so funny and fascinating to me!!!! Sorry, I just had to share for anybody that cares.

Yes, hole is funny. But it is what it is and it’s an eventual death pit. And to me that is funnier.

I know word count has nothing to do with quality but damn looking at some beasts of fanfiction like @aliasrocket for Rocket Raccoon x Reader like 16000 words for one chapter has me both intimidated and impressed.

changes and trends in horror-genre films are linked to the anxieties of the culture in its time and place. Vampires are the manifestation of grappling with sexuality; aliens, of foreign influence. Horror from the Cold War is about apathy and annihilation; classic Japanese horror is characterised by “nature’s revenge”; psychological horror plays with anxieties that absorbed its audience, like pregnancy/abortion, mental illness, femininity. Some horror presses on the bruise of being trapped in a situation with upsetting tasks to complete, especially ones that compromise you as a person - reflecting the horrors and anxieties of capitalism etc etc etc. Cosmic horror is slightly out of fashion because our culture is more comfortable with, even wistful for, “the unknown.” Monster horror now has to be aware of itself, as a contingent of people now live in the freedom and comfort of saying “I would willingly, gladly, even preferentially fuck that monster.” But I don’t know much about films or genres: that ground has been covered by cleverer people.
I don’t actually like horror or movies. What interests me at the moment is how horror of the 2020s has an element of perception and paying attention.
Multiple movies in one year discussed monsters that killed you if you perceived them. There are monsters you can’t look at; monsters that kill you instantly if you get their attention. Monsters where you have to be silent, look down, hold still: pray that they pass over you. M Zombies have changed from a hand-waved virus that covers extras in splashy gore, to insidious spores. A disaster film is called Don’t Look Up, a horror film is called Nope. Even trashy nun horror sets up strange premises of keeping your eyes fixed on something as the devil GETS you.
No idea if this is anything. (I haven’t seen any of these things because, unfortunately, I hate them.) Someone who understands better than me could say something clever here, and I hope they do.
But the thing I’m thinking about is what this will look like to the future, as the Victorian sex vampires and Cold War anxieties look to us. I think they’ll have a little sympathy, but they probably won’t. You poor little prey animals, the kids will say, you were awfully afraid of facing up to things, weren’t you?
#this is the sort of observation I make here that people#go off and write their thesis about#so while I’m not expecting to be the first or cleverest person to say this#if you do use it as a springboard#tell me if you get a good grade ok?#I’ll be tremendously proud of you#like if you take a shitpost and use it to craft deep attentive thought on something important#I just think that’s probably the most noble use of a human brain#it makes me want to take off my hat and slam it to the ground in inexpressible emotion#it’s a cowboy hat btw#and I say something like GOLDURN IT THAT KID SURE HAS DELIVERED.#ok so don’t deny me this#especially if you correct me after a long research journey#GOLDURN IT THE KID IS RIGHT!

There's a version of the "don't go grocery shopping while hungry" rule specifically for writers where you should never under any circumstances be allowed to touch your draft within 3 hours of reading a really good story. Because sometimes when you read something great your head goes "fuck this is so much better than my stuff I should make that more like THIS instead!" Look at me. That's the devil talking and you should close the document NOW.
#you will make superficial edits that do not gell well with the rest of your work#and won't actually capture what you thought was so good about that story#close the doc. sit down. think about it for a while. inspiration is fine. getting a 'eureka' moment from another story is fine#but if you find yourself comparing your work one to one with someone else's and taking any differences to be flaws on your part then STOP#you will never write good stuff by trying to make it look less like you wrote it#writing#writing advice#guess who just had to go into her google doc history and undo a bunch of panic-induced edits#because she read a fic about the same characters she's writing for?#meeee. they aged badly within just a few hours of hindsight. learn from my mistakes#self-hatred is not a good motivation for creation#fic writing
