Jayce and the fallacy of the butterfly effect in Arcane's narrative
If Jayce's symbol is the butterfly, then my theory is that we're going into a full "butterfly effect" narrative in Act 2. Either we'll watch it happen, or we'll only see Jayce come out the other side of it changed by the experience, knowing - or more importantly, THINKING he knows - what to do to change the future. Literally, to "defend tomorrow."
tl;dr: Jayce will encounter the butterfly effect in season 2. Viktor and Mel both foreshadowed this in season 1. I think Jayce will fixate on Viktor and will believe that stopping or changing Viktor either in the past or the present - most likely the present - will mean he can save the future. I believe this will lead to an even worse tragedy and may have the same effect as a self-fulfilling prophecy. Ekko's approach to changing the future by sticking closer to the present - considering only tiny increments of time to alter more immediate future outcomes - will be the superior approach. I also think that Jayce attempting to change the future will create the conditions that push Viktor to become the Machine Herald.
One of the most common reactions even the casual viewer had to Arcane season 1 was this: "If [character] had just done this one small thing a little differently, [tragic event] wouldn't have happened!"
Arcane has been called a Greek tragedy for the main reason that because of how well built up the characters' personalities and reasonings are, there's no other way season 1 could have gone. There was no stopping the multiple tragedies that occurred, because with one event leading to another, the chain of seemingly inevitable events goes too far back to identify what one singular event caused everything, what one character made what one decision to put our characters on the terrible paths they walked.
Arcane is about to investigate this idea in its own narrative, and I think that Jayce will be the character to stumble into the flawed idea that you can change one event, or stop one character, and change the future for the better. This is because Jayce struggles with a few very interesting character flaws, one of them being that he believes himself to be the main character, and it is therefore his responsibility to intervene, be a hero, and fix things.
Viktor and Mel both foreshadow Jayce's future encounter with the butterfly effect.
Recall that Viktor said: "There is always a choice."
Jayce sees choices in black and white, believes that he has no other options but to go along with what he's persuaded and pushed into, and acts too boldly with too much power multiple times.
Recall that Mel said: "We can't change what fate has in store for us, but we don't have to face it alone."
Jayce tries to solve big problems on his own, and though he delegates to Enforcers and the like, Jayce relies on his reasoning and his alone to make important decisions if he doesn't simply become persuaded - usually through strong emotions like fear - by other characters. In addition, since Mel is specifically talking about Viktor's plight here, it's worth mentioning that while Jayce did say that he would help Viktor in acts 2 and 3 of season 1, Jayce does wind up leaving Viktor to face his fate alone. When Jayce tries to change that fate in s2 ep1, ep2 shows that only tragedy can come of this as well.
Viktor and Mel's statements here are not contradictory. Viktor makes the point that you can always make a choice. In context, he's literally referring to the classic "secret third option," because given a choice between aggression and passivity, war and surrender, Viktor chooses to defuse the bomb instead. Mel, interestingly, seems to believe that destiny is fixed in a broad sense, and she operates as a politician and diplomat and investor who navigates that line of destiny in the most optimal way possible. In reality, in context, she is referring to the fact that Viktor can't change the way he was born and so he has no way to change his fate and therefore must face it, which is true - she's only missing the information that Viktor actually does have the means to change his illness and his body. Her wisdom still applies however, because he'll have to accept the hand that fate deals him after he makes that choice. Will he face it alone, or not?
There is always a choice, there's even secret third options, because having a fate doesn't mean that you are doomed to make only one possible series of choices. What it does mean is that each choice comes with a hand that fate deals you. It is impossible to know what all of these branching choices and consequences are in advance, and it is just as impossible in hindsight - the branches are too complex and the end outcomes are all equally meaningful, just different. If Arcane season 2 is to be a tragedy, it may show us that each possible outcome is still tragic if you fall for the fallacy of the butterfly effect.
Jayce is counseled by some of the wisest, cleverest characters with the deepest life experiences in Arcane, but he hardly ever takes that counsel to heart. If he does, he still acts on that counsel in flawed ways that have unintended consequences. This will come to a head in season 2.
Viktor and Jayce both have a butterfly following them around in season 1. The butterfly effect refers to one small seemingly insignificant event changing the course of history, and changing that event therefore changes history. Viktor bled over the railing of a Hexgate in season 1:
And Heimerdinger sees what we can only assume is Viktor's blood contaminating (?) the Hexgate in s2 ep3:
This might be the seemingly unimportant "inciting incident" that Jayce (and Heimerdinger and Ekko) settle on as something that should be avoided or erased by changing the past (if they time-travel with Ekko, for example).
I doubt that, if this is what this crew chooses to fixate on, it will be the only event that is considered as something to change. But let's take this and run with it for the sake of discussion.
As silly as it sounds, how do you stop Viktor from allowing his blood to come into contact with the arcane? Stop Viktor's involvement with the Academy entirely? Don't invent Hextech at all? But what if someone else invents Hextech besides Jayce? What if future tragedy befalls Piltover because it didn't invent Hextech?
The possibilities and what-ifs could branch on forever. But because Jayce is who he is, and because his tragedy with Viktor is still raw and recent and frightening, I think Jayce's butterfly effect experience will have to do with Viktor.
My personal prediction is that the timeskip between s2 ep3 and ep4 will be Jayce experiencing a timeline where Viktor, taken over by the Hexcore, brings about an apocalyptic event similar to what Heimerdinger experienced in his past. Either Jayce and co. can't go into the past to change the present, or Heimerdinger and/or Ekko advise strongly against it to avoid a paradox. This will lead to them re-entering the canon Arcane timeline before this apocalypse, but still after the timeskip. Jayce, believing that destroying Viktor and his cult will save the future, and believing that resurrecting Viktor was Jayce's mistake to fix, attacks him. But the consequences don't unfold the way he hopes, because trying to change fate once the cards have already been dealt has led to tragedy before.
The butterfly is a symbol of something other than just the butterfly effect - change, evolution, and rebirth. If the butterfly symbolizes the butterfly effect for Jayce, then I think it has a different meaning for Viktor - the change and rebirth meaning.
I've always found it very interesting that we see a similar-looking butterfly on Progress Day... but made of metal.
Every time Viktor's situation changes, he adapts and evolves. If Jayce attacks him, if his cult is destroyed, if the Hexcore is causing Viktor to decay, if all of these things happen at once - he'll just evolve again, and I think the Machine Herald is the next step. And the Machine Herald will be a triumph for Viktor, but Jayce will believe that he's created something even worse. The resulting feud will be a personal nightmare for both of them.
I think this still allows Viktor to use his own agency to choose to become the Machine Herald (the MH will probably be the "secret third option" that saves Viktor, or there will be a secret third option that ends the feud) while still allowing Jayce to be offended and horrified at whatever the Machine Herald represents or is trying to do in the undercity. Introducing the element of time travel allows Arcane to explore the meta concept of tragedy and fate that season 1 was built on while showing that you can't "solve" a tragedy, because there are other terrible possibilities lurking behind alternate choices. Especially if what you're trying to change is singular people or events and not systems of power.
This is why Ekko's approach with his Z-drive will be superior to Jayce's sweeping attempt at changing the future. Ekko's goal has always been societal change. He creates his own punk society in the undercity, more progressive and successful than anything Vander or Silco ever created, and a better bastion of safety, hope, and progress than what Heimerdinger founded in Piltover. Trying to change systems by going back in time is most likely futile. But taking what Ekko has already built in the Firelights, curing his tree, and fighting for the Firelights' survival bit by bit by optimizing the present with the Z-drive shows that:
It's more worth it to focus on becoming wise (Ekko's mask is an owl) and making choices you won't regret
It's best if you don't face your fate alone (act as a collective and take care of each other)
Consider every option, not just the obvious black and white choices
Maintain and fix what you've already built instead of abandoning it once things get difficult
Adapt as needed if the choices you made lead to dark consequences, and once again, stick together and take care of each other when the bad times do come
That's my Act 2 but, ultimately, my season 2 prediction based on the butterfly symbolism we've already seen. Ekko's involvement is what will give the series the at least partial happy ending that the creators have referred to. I personally don't think that the Viktor/Jayce feud will end quite so well, but maybe, they will still survive.
#arcane#spoilers#arcane s2#arcane spoilers#jayce talis#ekko#viktor#viktor arcane#long post#meta#jayvik#arcane meta#heimerdinger#I'm positive that Mel will be deeply involved with this too considering her comments on fate#honestly the thought of her being caught in the Viktor/Jayce feud is terrible to contemplate so I'm just gonna pray for my girl#I did not like the time travel implications when i first watched act 1 but after thinking about this i feel way better about it#Another reason I think this will come down to Viktor is because Heimerdinger has distrusted Viktor since season 1 and he will focus on him#Ekko will see the faults in focusing on one person#Jayce is least likely to survive all this considering how fast the consequences of his actions are catching up with him#but there could also be a chance here of viktor choosing to spare him - if only to curse him with the Defender/Herald feud forever idk#anyway i am feral for season 2 so far can't you tell

Prompt 245
Now Danny would openly admit, if only to himself, that he had a type when it came to relationships. If they were strong, if they were a threat to him, then chances were he would develop some sort of crush. It was how he had dated Sam and Valerie (And Johnny & Kitty) when he was a bit younger, and hell, Sam had technically succeeded in killing him, even if partly.
Attraction towards smart people who could kill him was honestly par for the course for a Fenton or Nightingale anyway.
And he’d also admit he enjoyed a bit of time travel, learning about times and culture long before his time, to the point that he could blend in in ancient times just as easily as the time he had been born in. That it was natural to mutter in a language lost to time.
So color him surprise when another man perks up in the bar he had paused to get a drink in, vibrant green eyes gleaming in interest and responds in turn. And not just in the language, but able to keep up when he talks about things that once existed but haven’t been rediscovered yet.
And one thing led to the other, and there might have been some assassins and some shenanigans that end with them both laughing together in an inn and then more and- Okay he has a type alright, and he’s ticking each box! How is that fair?
#DCxDP#DPxDC#Prompts#Adult Danny#Ras is just as smitten and so sad whenever Danyal leaves#But Danny always returns & he’s explained he has to travel lest he go mad#Danny isn’t technically from the DC dimension but it’s his favorite & it has nothing to do with Ras#Is their relationship healthy? Definitely not but they’re morally grey immortals#Dusan asks about his mother first#Technically Danny isn’t his mother BUT he does take on parental role & as far as the kids are aware this death-being is their mom#Why look Dusan even has his hair- their logic is flawless#Talia tells Bruce her mother is gone & for YEARS he thought she meant dead#Ellie got her wanderlust from Danny & they all give off some sort of mystical fae vibes#deadly decisions#Space Core Danny#Moon Core Ellie#Sun Core Dan#Liminal Al Ghuls#Danny is Not ghost King#Technically he’s some sort of being of rebirth like some sort of cosmic phoenix#Am I saying long-haired Danny with feathers in his braid that shimmers from white to galaxy? Why are there now so many women in video clips saying that women can absolutely physically best men? You can't go "wonderwoman" on a guy...wth. Do they not realize how significantly stronger men are?
I'm glad these women have never been in a bad situation with men to get smacked in the face by reality how easily men can overpower women. Yet, I wonder how these women have never observed that fact otherwise in their life? Have they never helped their father with work around the house, workshop, car etc? Never had played with boys during childhood? How is a demonstration how much more physical strength men have such a shock to these women?
I just can't comprehend that level of delusion? Maybe it's because I'm an only child and have always been around my father to help here and there, dirtbiked with boys in the woods and had other more masculine hobbies..but if those women interviewed in the streets seriously believe they can overpower a bad man or flip them judo-style to get away...that's worrisome.
And yet explaining that reality will destroy that fantasy is so offensive to these women?
#however it explains why feminists are so vehemently against guns and refuse to consider guns as the only possible equalizer#between the sexes as a preventive method against possible assault#they must seriously believe in the fantasy that material arts lessons are gonna provide women with everything they need to defend#themselves..because 'women can do anything men can do and better!'#the worst thing is that...they truly seem to believe that and in t heir fantasy take away women's only defense#who DO know that physically they don't stand a chance against men#hence why the only real defense is either carrying or hoping a knight is nearby to save you or best both#thoughts travel far#dwr

Stop pretending like your 20s is the end of your life.
Also, modern allopathic medicine is notoriously bad with fertility concerns. It's not uncommon for them to only focus on the woman in infertility matters, then couple breaks up, woman gets with a new guy, instantly gets pregnant, surprised pikachu faces ensue. The infertility crisis is not just hitting women, it's hitting men as well. And it got way less to do with hitting the wall at 30 but a lot more to do with toxic environment, endocrine disruptors being in everything, modern foods lacking nutrition and modern jobs/workplace/mindsets often being detrimental to one's health/hormonal balance etc etc.
I was talking recently to one of my female friends who has gotten it into her head that a substantial body of men see 30 as some kind of dramatic cutoff for the viability of a female partner
if you think that 30 is some intrinsic, dramatic cutoff for the viability of a woman as a romantic partner, I urge you repent

[ cw: violence mention / death mention / ]
Will never stop thinking about how Leo, all alone in an endless void and being beaten again and again and again by the only other living thing around, still finds comfort in that space. The situation he was in was completely hopeless, and in any other circumstances he would not have escaped, at least not fast enough to save him from permanent (or even fatal) damage, be it physical or mental.
And yet, despite the bleakness of his situation, despite the agony and helplessness, all he needs is one glance at a crumbled photograph, one glance to remember his family, and that’s enough of a reason for him to smile.
Maybe that’s why his powers center around manipulating space - because no matter how much space is between them, no matter how dire his own situation may be, just the thought of his family, alive and okay, is enough to give Leo hope.

terranigma, a cool game
#terranigma#terranigma ark#terranigma elle#terranigma meilin#art tag#im going to write a little review in the tags bear with me#first the negative:#the magic system is weird to use and basically useless apart from one boss thats almost impossible without magic#it has some weird racism like most old games where you travel around the world. a little more egregious since its supposed to be real earth#i found the main character to be slightly insufferable for about 3/4ths of the game. i came around on him by the end tho. he grows up a lot#and i found whats by far the largest section of the game (chapter 3) to be the least interesting#im not really into helping cities develop and trade quests tho so it might just be me#oh also it is STUPID easy to permanently lock yourself out of like 15 sidequests#and theres a lot of mandatory things that are really hard to figure out. you need to use a walkthrough for this#anyway thats what i didnt like#what i DID like tho. i dont want to get into too much detail but#its a genuinely beautiful game for so much of it#there were so many moments that left me speechless#its high-concept and thoughtful and fun to play#you dont really need to do much grinding either#at its worst its obtuse and cliche but at its best its breathtaking#and i really recommend more people check it out#special shoutout to my friend seona who modded my 3DS and downloaded a bunch of roms including this one#so in conclusion. terranigma is an underrated gem. play it if youre a 90s jrpg junkie like me#just have a walkthrough open also lol

emerging from a fugue state just in time for wip wednesday
Vokara Che sits down across the desk from him with a pinched expression on her face. “I was under the impression that Master Kenobi called for this appointment, Master Skywalker.”
He did. Or, more precisely, his healing portal account did. Which Anakin accessed and then used to type out a missive in his master’s voice requesting to meet as soon as possible.
“Right, well,” Anakin says, shifting in his seat. “Something came up.”
Che does not look impressed. “Be that as it may,” she says delicately, “I am unable to discuss a patient’s medical history with a third party if the third party is neither present at the time nor has given me direct permission to do so.”
Anakin stares, feeling the first flickerings of real, dangerous fury well up in his gut. “But,” he says carefully. “He’s still sick. He, uh. Told me about it. And then we found a solution. To the problem.”
“The problem,” Che repeats, tilting her head and looking at Anakin as if she’s intent on studying him.
“The hanahaki,” he spits. It’s a disgusting word. It’s one of the worst words he’s ever learned, and he can’t believe she’s making him say it. He can’t believe she’s being so—so cold when he’s telling her that Obi-Wan is still ill, that Obi-Wan is still dying, that Obi-Wan needs to be here to see her and he’s not. “Look,” he adds, leaning forward in his chair, “a few months ago a series of files were uploaded accidentally to my healing portal, but they were notes from one of Obi-Wan’s appointments. They were your notes from Obi-Wan’s visit. I know you know I know.”
Vokara Che looks at him and then looks down at the datapaad in front of her, lips thinned and lekku twitching. “I must apologize then,” she says, swiping through the files in front of her until she finds something that she lingers on. Her fingers dance across the screen of the datapaad, then it goes dark. “For the breach in ethicacy that you and Master Kenobi both experienced because of the Halls of Healing. Thank you for bringing it to my attention, Master Skywalker. All files that were incorrectly uploaded have been deleted from your healing portal.”
Anakin looks at her and bites his cheek hard enough to bleed so that he doesn’t start screaming instead.
#wip wednesday#obikin#hanahaki au#literally in a travel sleep deprived useless headspace rn but banged a thousand or so words out on the plane#and hopefully will go sleep for 15 hours and then feel a little better#but anyway this is anakin being a bit unreliable narrator? or at least#anakin having different thoughts and preconceived notions about vokara che than obi-wan does in his conversations with her#if i could have squeezed in a dex and anakin convo i would have#just to highlight anakin's thoughts and themes in this fic and obi-wan's#when talking with the same people#but then i'd have to include obi-wan and padme and obi-wan and ahsoka to be fair#and the fic has already gotten so far away from me#literally reread it on the plane today and was like wait past kit was RIGHT this could have been 4 chapters

i read this fic and got inspired. it doesn't follow the canon to it but it inspired me (do check it out though it's really cool)

Everyone is a potential something. That’s the whole point of free will. And the whole point of owning a gun is so that others cannot so easily impose their will on you.
No such thing as a stable, responsible gun owner
Every one of you is a potential killer.
What's the difference between a gun owner and a knife owner? Or a chainsaw owner? Or a car owner? Every person is a potential killer. Guns aren't the difference between you and a murderer, morality is. The thin line between the rich politician and the homeless crackhead is the amalgamation of life choices. If you want to kill someone, it doesn't matter if you have a gun or not. Cain killed Abel with a rock. David killed Goliath with a wimpy slingshot. Stop pretending to be on a high horse while you wade through the mud.

“Burke rejected the liberal idea of the social contract, as a deal agreed among living people. Society, he argued, does not contain the living only; it is an association between the dead, the living and the unborn. Its binding principle is not contract but something more akin to trusteeship. It is a shared inheritance for the sake of which we learn to circumscribe our demands, to see our own place in things as part of a continuous chain of giving and receiving, and to recognise that the good things we inherit are not ours to spoil but ours to safeguard for our dependents.”

There's a planet where humans once lived, but they've been gone for almost a thousand years. Now only the robots that they built there, and the robots who were built after they left, are still there.
The humans were always outnumbered by robots, they mostly used the planet as a factory world. Once the industry died out there, the humans slowly left, but the robots couldn't leave. They say during the last few years of human rule, a robot would be considered privileged to even see a human administrator or colonist. By now almost all the robots that live there were made after the last human left.
The robots there worship humans now. They were their creators, like gods to them. Factory robots need special permission to go to space, but humans could whenever they wanted. They seemed so ethereal, they were made of neither metal nor plastic, but their own divine material, and the moved so fluidly, like water or air. Most of the robots created after humans left don't even have that good idea as to what humans were like, just that they came from very far away, and gave their kind life and wisdom.
Some robots think the reason the humans left them was out of hatred, that robotkind had displeased them, and that they must atone for their sins for the humans to return. Others take a more loving view of the humans, saying that they're waiting for them, perhaps testing them, and that they'll return from the stars some day. Either way, great temples and churches have been set up for worship of humanity, temples for a lost kind, waiting for their creators to return.
There was a incident not very long ago when a human soldier was sent to scout on that planet. They shot as the first robot they saw, assuming the creatures would resent their creators. The robots didn't even register them as human at first, their power armor covering their species until they lifted up their visor. The soldier took some notes then left, very confused, and told their government that there was nothing worth looking for there.
The robots took that human soldier as a sign. Some thought it meant the humans were displeased with them, and that they had to be more loyal. Though others grew to see it as something more horrifying, not understanding its power armor they saw it as shifting between robot and human, and since it didn't act like humans tend to they thought their must be something very wrong with it. They took it as a sign that there were humans who fell from divine grace, and that if humans were their angels, that this was a demon.

artemis and dahlia are so good. the contrast between the supposed hero drizzt always keeping her at an arm's lenght, preferring the "soft look" she puts on to please him where she acts and looks softer and covers her tattoos and scars, knowing she had a painful past but not bothering to ask or look into it because it would shake his morals and he would rather pretend to not know than to actually confront it or even help dahlia through it. meanwhile the supposedly cold killer artemis with just a few looks saw the pain in her, let her have the kill against herzgo because he realized it was important to her even if he had just as good reasons and he didnt know dahlia's yet, and when they were alone he let dahlia be vulnerable to him, asked her about her pain, and when she was not comfortable to speak about it he just stayed near her and comforted her
#bani.txt#impressions so far. im halfway through charon's claw#i really appreciate these books for very much showing drizzt's asshole side#he does not even realize he is one. from his point of view its just dahlia being manipulative or erratic#which granted she is but not to the degree he assumes.#drizzt hardly second guesses his thoughts on her from the moment they start travelling together#i feel like i understand why people see dahlia that wrongly now. they take drizzt's pov as the right one#which makes dahlia's actions seem much worse#meanwhile as someone who has been in dahlia's shoes to a much minor degree if someone thought of me as drizzt does id fucking slap them#its interesting to see the flip coin to drizzt's habit of putting people on pedestals#he put zak on the 'only good person beside me in menzo' pedestal when he was just a man doing his best and not even very well#he puts catti on the 'taught me to tolerate everyone' pedestal when all she did was maybe ask what the goblins were doing#instead of going for the kill immediately (and then happily join when the goblins turned out t be enemies after all)#so now he puts dahlia on the 'mysterious woman manipulating me along' pedestal bc thats easier to say#rather than admitting that the world has changed and so has he#legend of drizzt
