In the bg3 verse, Evan chops wood in order to find peace while at camp. It was a way they trained children in the cult, but she always enjoyed it more than the others seemed to. It was something she could do and know that as long as she was being effective, she would be left alone. There were variables that affected her success in many things while she was with the cult, her soft little heart not really up to the task of pleasing Zuggtmoy's whims the way she needed to all the time, but the one thing she had always been good at was hard work. It's relaxing, knowing that she can always at least do that right.

The Diary of Doctor Laszlo Kreizler
Chapter 1  -  Chapter 2
Synopsis: Alienist’s notes are private, sometimes gruesome, secrets of others and of himself. Those pages belongs to secrecy and decadence, have a glimpse to this world made of drafts, notes, accidents and reflections. Or maybe it is you the only person that should ever reach for it.
Tumblr media
While you read this imagine Laszlo mostly at the end of his day, scraping the ideas and the thoughts, adjusting previous notes with additions, closing the day behind himself with a couple of sentences while sitting in his evening robe, a good glass of whiskey and his glasses bridged almost at the tip of his nose. Or maybe imagine yourself, you sneaky thing, reach for it from a far shelf.
Word count: 3.5k
Warnings: listen, this is the set of ideas and confessions of a man living in the 1890s. Most of them will be outdated, rough, even deprecating in some analysis of the roles of men, women and social status, religion, etc.So be prepared, my point is to make Laszlo reflect upon those topics, but to be as faithful as I can to his time. Mention of death, mutilation, self harm and sex. Psychologically troubled young children ahead! Author’s note: The story is placed between season 1 and season 2. Thank you for everyone that encouraged me to keep going. I have to wait for my local drop of serotonin to get fully Laszloed to go through this.

Routine. Routine is comfort. Habit stabilises the character.
If you follow a routine, you won’t ever be victim of imprudence, of evil jokes of fate. The stability earned through calculated and repeated actions brings a sense of fulfilment that forbids other thoughts to come bashing in, breaking rules, breaking hopes that a solid scheduled routine forbids to have. I take my time to begin this week, I planned the things to do, the next steps for the case, the people to meet, the resources I am allowed to contemplate. I feel good, I feel back to myself and the events of the weekend seem far from me and my own perception. I probably got ahead of myself, carried by some instinctual though and random rush of emotion, to be always in contact with the same people and mostly kids probably doesn’t help my stance in the presence of other adults. I feel silly now reading back the last page, I felt tempted to tear it off, but to keep it there should be a small memento of not losing my temper so easily. I read it over and over and I know I am not as charmed as I thought I was. I am just lonely. I have always been and it is normal to face ups and downs even for a man of my age who is more accustomed to it.  To desire a partner is a natural instinct, to find somebody attractive is meant by nature, it is the body calling for the natural fulfilment of the reason we are put on this very Earth.  But even in a state of nature my own condition would be forbidding me to be part of the natural process of growing my own kind. I am the type of male that would be excluded because of his impossibility to give the protection to the pack, therefore it is just more reasonable to me to adapt to my condition. No matter what my Potentia generandi might be (the ability to procreate).
With all the smugness that characterises him, Niki showed off that he passed my challenge. But to be really of an help to his antics I didn’t show any kind of surprise. I treated him like he did the bare minimum, like he didn’t prove me any kind of superiority. He has a natural attitude toward challenging the figure of power, he is trying to overpower me, but I won’t satisfy his need. I have noticed he has a very technical brain, he finds ways to solve problems in ingenious way and not by throwing himself into the task. I proceeded giving him to work on a clock, an old broken one we had in the institute, one of the kids hit it with a ball years ago and nobody ever worked on repairing it. I gave him the clock, a couple of screwdrivers and a book. He called me a number of German names I won’t transcribe, but it gave me a certain amount of satisfaction. If my intuitions are right, I am sure the clock will be repaired by next week.
Analysis of the victim’s body through John’s eyes. The drawings and sketches are as detailed as I requested, all of this thanks to you joining him. I deal with art critic section, I am used to notice these things. You assure me, you play yourself low and I wonder why, nevertheless you did notice things neither John or I did, which pleased me. It fooled me, distracted me from my purpose to not give in to your witchery, as I leaned closer watching your pale hand move across the pages tracing this or that line, showing how this must be done with the killer on this side and not that side, with words so deliciously elaborate, your way of composing your speech is compelling, you could sell the drawing of a kid like it was a Botticelli. I noticed the shape of your hands, the way you move them, I wonder if you play an instrument, or played, some habits just stick with you through life. I focused on taking notes, your ideas and instructions giving me a new point of view, a new stimulus. What if that is the only way the killer can communicate? Or what if this is the communication that works for him? Could our killer be mute or deaf? Or that’s how society made him feel? This man, or woman, needs a listener and I am afraid that now, since he got our attention and the public’s, he won’t stop. Another killing could be just as close.
Scheduled: meeting with the parents of Alex Garel for new admission, Monday next week at 11 am. Love at first is a fetish and like all fetishes it is based onto an object that hides a deeper meaning, like gloves mean hands, to love at first sight means to see somebody that you think, and think only, to have the chance to share not only a sensual kind of bond, but an intellectual. Love at first sight is based onto not knowing someone well enough, but having the time to idealise most of that someone. I can see why I feel this attraction, using a particular phrase that Sara often mutters when investigating: you tick all the boxes. I know you do, your beauty is everything but conventional, you’re the kind of face that painters would paint and musicians would write hymns about, but any animal on the street would never be allowed to see. You have the grace of the body and the fire in the eyes, and then you speak. When you speak, I realise, you could bring the world to its knees. Also, you never speak out of context, and if you do it is to ease somebody’s position. You do it often with John or with Stevie, you say something really silly in order to put them back to a place of comfort. Some women would call it self deprecating, but I see that you only pick wisely your fights and your wins. You don’t need to earn your peace and quiet by neglecting, but by lifting up the others. I wonder if you do it with me too, if your silences are just you allowing me to be in a better place while instead your judgment is tearing me apart. I shouldn’t care, but I keep wondering, sometimes I take my time to answer you, I analyse every shade, every peculiarity of your question, I am looking for sarcasm, for a condescending voice, for something to hang on and bare you open. To prove myself you’re not perfect. But deep down I know that you do, you judge me and you do well.
Mother never said so. That’s what one of the girls in my care said today. Ursula. She is tough. Skin as thick as an alligator and the tendency to pull her own hair at night or when under a massive amount of stress, enuresis alongside erratic episodes of mutism. I tried the soft approach, it didn’t work. She is too accustomed to be indulged. Therefore today I pushed her a bit overboard, I teased her over opinions on the female body, the female role, she is only 12, but she is soon to bleed, she knows, I can tell from the way she clenches to her skirts, from the way she looks at me as a threatening figure. I am the incarnation of danger to her. Under her steady silence, I pushed a bit more, asking how her mother taught her to be nice and submissive. Does her mother tells her she is going to be a good wife? The phrase, which I reported at the top of the page, surprised me.  What is her mother teaching to her then? What closed her so much, locked her soul away, making a small bird like this choose the silence and the retirement of self inflicted pain over, what? Mankind? Or just Men? Is that even a curse? Should I cure her from a truth that her own mother whispered to her ear one night before bed and made a child decide that the world wasn’t a place to share her time with? Am I the man supposed to teach her that men are worth of trust? In the eyes of modern society, who measures its own value over the modesty of the women, she would be a champion, but at what price? I can’t in any way let her parents bring her back home after our recent meetings. Nevertheless, I have to make up my own mind on how to give her troubled soul ease without making her believe in fables. I, as a man, regard myself not worth of any of the trust they expect me to teach her.
In all of my years practicing with people’s feelings and traumas, I challenged myself to find those same traumas within my own mind. It is a tricky game, terrible, anguishing at times. But it straightens me, the pain of others, the pain of kids mostly, so unadulterated and pure, breaks the curtain between me and the lies that I often surround myself with. Pain is made of method, you can open it up, you can scrutinise it, part it piece by piece dividing it in sectors and, partitions, centre part, side part, heart of the problem. Pain is reliable. Happiness is not. It is random, cruelly sudden, unexpected, it washes over you in such deflecting way only to leave you alone a moment after ashamed and alone. I saw you again today. You were in a table full of what I could only guess as your former university colleagues, I saw pain in you, not heavy but constant. Annoyance, a bit of sadness. Your head titling on side and your eyes drifting on the left, you’re imagining something away from them.  A place? An object? Or maybe someone? Your hands play circles at the bottom of the flute of your drink like kids do, your smile only one sided. I don’t see you speak at all, only listen.  What could keep your voice down? I almost gulped down my own breath as you looked up and I realised how I must have looked. I was having lunch on my own, in a very private table and even entertaining myself with a newspaper on the side. I wish you didn’t, but you came over, your eyes shining.  Did I save you? Or maybe I was just a good excuse to leave that painful meeting behind. Don’t be so nice to me, it is not healthy. Don’t look at me like you expect anything more from me than me listening. I won’t smile back at you, I won’t give you care, attentions or thought. I won’t lean for your perfume, I won’t obsess over that dress you wore, that pin that adorned your neckline keeping your undershirt in place, a silver robin, I remember. I won’t remember the number of the buttons on the side of your glove, three. I won’t observe the little moles just under your ear. A small constellation, I later realised, hidden between your ear and the beginning of your neck. I don’t need to check in my books. It is a constellation. It is Lyra. Why? Why you must be like this? Are you the Lyra? Are you the instrument of Orpheus come to me to drag me out of Hell? The Tartarus holds my soul and you should know already, I am not worth the quarter part of Eurydice to be saved and she never came back anyway. I won’t be now recollecting the way your teeth sunk in the inner side of your cheek when you apologised for the annoyance.  You apologised twice, I ignored you both times with a raised hand to request peace and silence. I am not letting you in.

Leonardo, as I am learning through Paul Valery essay, is who I would define as a figure of projective identification of the Subject or, to better explain it, of the knowledge of the Subject that formed and grew through the use of sketches in the experience of the Artist. I have always thought that the finest form of art was the representation of knowledge duly undressed by any personal identification. Leonardo, instead, proceeded to represent the figure through the essence of the artist, a representation technically unlimited on objects and symbols and that keep expressing the transformation and development of Leonardo’s own being. Some artists are testimony of the destruction of the world, of the loss of eternal beauty over decadence. And then you have Leonardo, who creates an art that is the gravity of the world’s system, of the nature, of thoughts and abstractions. I wonder if our killer does the same, if the way they presents the victim through their own personal view, if what we can read there it is their stories, their pains, their needs. Their happiness and troubles. What are they trying to tell me?  I need to know, I need to know to save a life, of course, but I also need to know to be able to sleep at night. Hair, hair are the epitome of femininity in any era. I keep studying Ursula and her habit to pull the. I took notes on it: she picks them by the bottom, slowly separates them until she gains an amount her mind defines satisfactory and then she rolls her finger and pulls, she does it until her finger is empty and there are no hair left. I find her process incredibly interesting. In men’s case the display of physical attributes is not as vital, a beard can be appreciated but does not modify the power of seduction of a grown man. On the contrary, for women hair are a vital part of their attractiveness toward the opposite sex, society sees the hair of a woman as part of their vital characteristics, also in ancient times for a woman to cut her hair or have her hair cut was a sign of deep separation from the society. Only heroines or whores wore that mark and the association of the two is so rooted into the way society always parted the role of a woman in two that it is nauseating to think of. I am still fearing to let Ursula go away, the repulsion that she is showing toward her own body makes it difficult even for me to crack her shell open as a man, but my deepest worry is when that hate will take a scarier and deeper tool on her. How a girl with such  a fear of what her body can do, like sex or pregnancy, can endure in the future to have an husband? Or even to be courted by anyone?
John is helpless and I admire him for that. He doesn’t hide it, he just is. He is vulnerable and exposed, he is an open well bursting with doubts and feelings and troubled waters. He is genuine in a way I could never be. Maybe that’s why I despise even more him talking about you, how he sees you every morning, how you greet everybody, how you behave even with interns, how you like your coffee.  Your talents, your wits, how you said this and acted like that and reasoned through him. How you forbid him to drink even when he felt tempted. How you stayed late over to help him collect all the informations I requested him to get. To him. Not to you. The evil demon of envy scratching in the back of my head screaming like a siren out in the sea, he demands to be heard, he demands to be allowed a part in this game. I won’t allow him that. I won’t allow myself any of that. This is a pure game of chess, if I give in a pawn now, I will lose my knight, and I know it. I advice him to not be so closed minded when he praises you, only to get surprised by the charms of a natural logical mind. I find a way to hurt him, he is an easy target, I look at him as his eyebrows twitch and he summons his patience on me. He lost the plot about you already, his bruised pride taking over. You won’t come into my life.
“Un dì, felice, eterea, mi balenaste innante, e da quel dì tremante vissi d'ignoto amor.”  (“On a day, happy and ethereal, you appeared in front of me and from that day, trembling, I lived on an unknown love”)
The words of Alfredo in the first act of the Traviata keep running through me, a chant that won’t let me go, almost painful. The Opera House, that was my hiding place, a place where in plain sight I could let out myself, unleash. The catharsis of the characters involved running through me, I didn’t need anything but their voices and those musical instruments to let out my fears, doubts and anger. When Alfredo came to the scene tonight, the lights were strong and slightly pinkish, the performer bursting out of the seams with passion. My eyes diverted only to see you there. Alone. Those blinding lights gave you the the radiance of a vision singing the notes of greek myths and heroes, that dark blue evening clothing rang through my eyes like it was a bright yellow, the little shiny details that adorned you so clear against the heavy lighting to look like transparent pieces of water collected to adorn your beauty. I wasn’t me, but Alfredo, and I was helpless against you sitting so far and yet too close from me. I was naked in front of thousands. I am aware of the effect you have on me and our last conversation was barely regarded as one. This is infatuation, this is the pure work of a lonely mind and not something worth of any of all the words that I am dissipating here. Yet. I saw you cry at the climax of the opera, Violetta, the protagonist, heartbroken falling on stage consumed by pain and regret for her lost love and ultimate sacrifice. Your eyes shone as you tried to hide the tears and collect yourself. Through my binoculars, I saw your throat tremble and gulp down something more than just a sigh of pain. Your jaw clenched, your gloved hand moves to hide your shaking lips. I reckon, I have never seen such sad lips look more inviting. You look at the wall on your side breathing through your nose and not even that can save you by the strength of the voice of the soprano. You’re defeated and so you brought a fine silk handkerchief to your eyes, your shoulders bent inward in self defence.  The Opera won. It won you like it always wins me. I wonder if you felt like this because of a past lover, somebody that broke your heart and made you feel wrong in any way.  And because of that little wonder it is even more clear to me why I am a man worth of no trust. Because for a moment, I know, I wished to be the one that broke your heart. That gave you just the pain you’re inflicting on me so mercilessly by offering intoxicating kindness and beauty.  To own your thoughts, tears and shame. To be the one man you have to look away from. I want to own all of that and, maybe, I will be freed of you the day you’ll be just another human being that hates Dr Laszlo Kreizler.

ROSALíA - MALAMENTE
[8.23]
This song won Best Alternative Song and Best Urban Fusion/Performance, and based on this score, probably should have won everything else too.
Leonel Manzanares de la Rosa: Flamenco-pop, flamenco-tinged R&B, even flamenco rap and flamenco-reggaetón, are nothing new -- past heroes like Rosario, Bebé, Chambao, Papá Levante and fusion legends Ojos de Brujo all have enjoyed international projection and can be considered Rosalía's natural predecessors in that aspect. Rosalía gladly and effectively acknowledges that tradition while contributing to it with her empowered R&B-flavored chants, and the latin urban sensibilities in El Guincho's productions. "Malamente" establishes an interesting dynamic between the modern synths and pads and the traditional palmas a compás, which work in counter-rhythm to her cante, for a track that offers a glimpse into the percussive complexities of rumba while feeling at home in one of those alt-pop playlists. It's a new step in flamenco's legacy. [8]
Crystal Leww: My introduction to Rosalía was her feature on J. Balvin's latest album, a quiet, downtempo, fluttering track among an album of reggaetón bangers. At the Latin Grammys, she beat his monster of a tune "Mi Gente" for Urban/Fusion performance with "Malamente." It's easy to see why: this is slinky and sensual with plenty of interesting flourishes in the production as well as her very own vocal performance. It's perfect critic bait, as it stands out as driving towards a very specific sound, a re-imagining of a largely left behind musical genre in flamenco. The handclaps, the asides, the breaking of the glass, the reverb, the "tra! tra!" -- all of these should take you out of such a quiet song, but Rosalía does just enough without crossing the line. Enric Palau, director of Sónar music festival in Spain recently said that she could be the Rihanna of flamenco. And don't get me wrong, I love Rihanna, but she never had the vision to do something like this. [7]
Alfred Soto: Relistening to Radiohead is not an experience to which I often submit myself, but their use of hand claps, programmed or otherwise, loosened me up for what Rosalía attempts on "Malamente," complete with mournful keyboard. [7]
Nortey Dowuona: Twirling, circular drums wind up around the soft synths, with Rosalía's gentle, short singing and claps carefully herding them together into the field. [8]
William John: We don't have any Andalusian writers on the Singles Jukebox roster, as far as I know, which is a shame in this instance because I've been desperate to read something in English about Rosalía from that perspective that isn't a garbled translation derived from Google software. Rosalía is Catalan, but has sent shockwaves through Spain that are slowly permeating into other Western markets (I confess to learning of her from a Dua Lipa tweet); the shockwaves are in part due to her striking videos, overseen by CANADA (also responsible for that memorable El Guincho video a few years back, who incidentally handles production here), but also for her use of gitanx imagery and accents as a non-gitana. She's addressed these matters with defensiveness and naivety in interviews, and thus in Spain is the subject of some controversy. To her credit, she has worked with Las Negris, a group whose members are part of the Montoyita flamenco dynasty, on this song and elsewhere on her album El mal querer, and she seems to be both a devoted student of flamenco tradition and aware of her place in its world. Her designation as a pioneer, as someone revolutionising a centuries-old artform, seems to have come from media outside Spain more than anywhere else, and it's important to acknowledge that though she presents a perspective that may initially strike Anglo listeners as unusual, she's not the first and likely not the last flamenco artist to add personal flourish to this esteemed cultural institution. But when you watch her in "Malamente," with its portentous murmuring and dramatic "tra TRA!" hook -- one of the year's most insidious -- as she variously claps with menace leaning over the steering wheel of a truck, is raised up by forklift like a martyr to the pyre, and sits atop a frozen motorcycle, flagged down by a matador, with an expression of incredible intensity, isn't her baptism as a revolutionary, future world conqueror the most obvious conclusion? [9]
Iris Xie: Something about this song is instinctual, velvety, and haunting, like it will grab you by the chest and then dare you to explore what lies in the world that it came from. Inside of its vortex, it conjures up the perfect environment for being audacious enough to dance on a cutie that you see at the club, and there's enough breathing space in between the instrumentals and vocals to cultivate a chemistry and charisma after. There's a stunning pre-chorus from 1:34 that reminds me of the high, dreamy vocals in some Bollywood sequences, before it drops back low into a whispered chorus that undulates with a mesmerizing repetition. You can't help but dance along to that. It's a siren's song, remixed for 2018 and creeping along to a venue near you. [8]
Stephen Eisermann: Growing up, I was always enthralled by (what I thought was) gypsy culture. Clearly, the problematic media portrayals in both Disney movies and novelas my mom had playing in the background gave me a limited and exoticized view of gypsy culture and even now as I've taken the time to learn more, its hard to shake predispositions if the past. This song, very clearly R&B but with Latin tinges and seemingly Arab pop phrasing, is a culmination of all sounds that feel mysterious, as if the sound coming from my speakers form together to make that image of a gypsy from my past. All at once I'm enthralled and embarrassed, knowing that I should move past negative media portrayals yet entranced by the imagery this song brings to mind. [8]
Pedro João Santos: By releasing "Malamente," Rosalía achieved that moment of conquering the pop sphere all at once, in the span of 2:30. Aong with co-author El Guincho, Rosalía never relinquishes control, and they distill flamenco into sleek, diligently-precise soundscapes. That sonic mesh, differing from the traditional approach taken on her last album, has been the subject of controversy. I highly recommend reading from all points of view on the matter of cultural appropriation and, although that of the Andalusian community prevails, it's hard to grasp everything. This is a single that defies expectations of what an inaugural moment of pop domination is -- its foreboding edge, the multilayered sound, the conceptual richness (most evident if its parent album) -- and takes other expectations to an extreme -- vocal prowess is conspicuous, but my favorite part is how hooks are thrown relentlessly at the forefront and into the background. Within just ten seconds: "Así sí? Tra tra! Mal, muy mal, muy mal, muy mal... Mira! Toma que toma." Instant yet disorienting, seamless yet complex. In any measure other than cultural sensibility, as Rosalía's use of flamenco will continue to be the center of debate: it's bulletproof. [9]
Will Adams: The handclaps alone would have convinced me, but it's Rosalía's steely confidence that makes "Malamente" worth revisiting. [7]
Edward Okulicz: It's a short song, but it's so packed with intoxicating and instantly gratifying hooks and smaller, subtle details that make it so satisfying to dive deeply into. Rosalía's voice embodies so many moods in such a short time that one can't help but be impressed at her performance and composition. She sings, she whispers, she interjects her catchiest lines with other catchy parts. The clapping rhythm is infectious, and the song generates so much heat I'm sure my blood raised the temperature of my body a couple of degrees after having it on repeat for an hour. After that, I put it on for another hour. [9]
Juan F. Carruyo: Some friends of mine hyped Rosalía to me by claiming she was "inventing a whole new genre," which is probably a disservice to the successful fusion she and her co-conspirator El Guincho manage here: a bare bones production that's rescued by a sultry flamenco melody and lots and lots of attitude. This is the one that blew up because it's her most global, retaining just enough of an exotic touch to draw people in -- the handclaps, the slang that gives the song its title -- but also holding back from her virtuous pipes. [9]
Joshua Minsoo Kim: Rosalía's sophomore album was inspired by a 13th century fable entitled The Romance of Flamenca, a classic love triangle story that centers on Count Archimbaut's jealousy-fueled transformation toward insanity. He eventually imprisons his wife -- the eponymous Flamenca -- in a tower, allowing her to leave its confines for no more than two reasons: bathing and mass. He was meant to represent the very opposite of courtly behavior to the story's readers, and yet, this portrait of a powerful man restricting a woman's life is just as necessary today. There's consequently no greater statement that could have started El mal querer than its lead single, "Malamente." The interaction of its flamenco palmas with minimal percussion and synth pulses pits listeners in a space between the traditional and contemporary. Even more, the spacious world that she and El Guincho create is simultaneously anxious and impassioned. Rosalía's vocalizing glides smoothly along the beat before sharply piercing listeners with jaleo in the form of "illo!" and "tra, tra!" adlibs. In the album's narrative, "Malamente" prefaces Archimbaut and Flamenca's wedding, and the track's subtitle indicates that the song is an omen. What is it foretelling, exactly? Well, it warns of the tumultuous relationship that's to come from the Count and his wife, but it's also a declaration that Rosalía is putting forth regarding her music, that it's going to be charting unfamiliar territory. Critics may, and have, decried "Malamente" as being disingenuous to flamenco's roots, positing that Rosalía is a mere cultural appropriater. This is despite her time spent at the Catalonia College of Music, a school where only one student per year is admitted to studying flamenco, and whose flamenco teacher commented that Rosalía was their most memorable pupil. She also has been vocal in wanting to collaborate with people outside the world of flamenco, and has already met with artists such as Pharrell and Arca. In a sense, Rosalía's critics try to force her into her own proverbial tower, but it's clear that she won't stay inside. With "Malamente," she delivers that very message to whoever will listen, reimagining new stories for Flamenca and flamenco in the process. [9]
Jacob Sujin Kuppermann: The way "Malamente" worms into your brain, dancing in as this amorphous thing pulsating polyrhythmically and working in tones just barely within the boundaries of pop music, is deeply compelling. Even more compelling is what Rosalía does with it: over the funhouse-mirror flamenco-R&B palace she builds, the Catalonian singer's precisely sung portrait of fractured fate and consequences feels real and haunted in a way that few pop songs truly are. Title: La Pucelle et la Coccinelle (Part 3)
Fandom: Miraculous Ladybug
Word count: 4097
Prologue | Part 1 | Part 2
This is a really freaking long chapter, so I apologize for that. ;; I hope you guys enjoy it anyway!
Sure enough, the next time Joan went before Robert de Baudricourt, he held a tattered letter in his hand, and was gaping at her as if he'd seen a ghost.
Joan didn't return to Vaucouleurs that month.
Or the month after that, or the month after that.
In June, news came that the earl of Salisbury had arrived in France and was making his way to Orleans. It was followed not long after, in July, by a Burgundian raid on Domremy. Joan and her family, along with the other villagers, fled to nearby Neufchateau. Tikki tried to ask Joan why she hadn't made any attempts to prevent Domremy from being raided, but her only answer was a vague “that is not for me to do.”
By the time the villagers of Domremy were able to return, Vaucouleurs had been besieged. Robert de Baudricourt, it turned out, had been forced to pledge neutrality in order to have the siege lifted. Domremy itself was a wreck. The fields had been destroyed, and several houses burnt to the ground.
What was hardest for Joan, however, was what had become of the church of St. Remy. Though the exterior had survived, the interior had burned almost beyond repair. Joan fell to her knees when she saw what had happened to the church, and she wept. Tikki popped her head out of Joan's pouch and, after checking that the coast was clear, emerged to comfort her master.
Joan barely spared a glance for Tikki. Her eyes were locked on the charred remains of the altar. “What have they done to Your house?” she whispered through her tears.
Tikki, feeling rather awkward and quite as if this was too intensely personal for her to be witnessing, drifted up to hug Joan's cheek. Tears wet the top of Tikki's head.
“Don't worry, Joan,” she murmured. “I'm sure they'll have it fixed soon enough.”
Joan wiped at her eyes and at the cheek Tikki wasn't hugging. “I weep for the destruction, but I weep more for the state of the souls of the men who did this to my Lord's house,” she said. She still hadn't taken her eyes off the altar. “They know not what they have done to themselves.”
And then Joan did something that Tikki hadn't expected. She went to kneel at one of the burned pews, and prayed. Not for the repair of the church, but for the very men who had destroyed it.
For the first time, Tikki felt she really, truly understood why the great guardian had chosen Joan to bear the Miraculous.
In October, Orleans was the next to be besieged, despite the fact that their hereditary lord was in captivity and the city was therefore entitled to neutrality. Joan didn't seem terribly surprised by the news. Still, she didn't return to Vaucouleurs. The royal court moved west from Bourges to Chinon soon after the siege of Orleans.
Tikki was beginning to wonder if Joan was ever going to go back to Vaucouleurs to hound Robert de Baudricourt again when, in January, Durand returned to Domremy. Joan greeted him at the door with a smile like the sun. He didn't tarry long this time. That evening at supper, he spoke to Joan's father about her visiting him and his wife in Burey-le-Petit again. She was needed, Durand explained, to alleviate his wife's suffering. What kind of suffering it was supposed to be, Tikki wasn't sure. Joan's father seemed to accept it as a reasonable cause at face value, and didn't ask for specifications. Permission was granted for Joan to leave the next morning.
Goodbyes were brief. All Joan said to her father, as she and Durand headed out, was “goodbye. I am going to Vaucouleurs.” He looked somewhat taken aback at that—there had been no mention of Vaucouleurs the night before, so Tikki couldn't really blame him. But he didn't stop her, or ask what she meant. He just bid her farewell and stood at the door until they turned a corner and were lost from sight. To other villagers along the way out of Domremy, Joan was even less chatty. The few people she did speak to were only told goodbye, nothing more. Tikki did hear murmurs as Joan passed, though, whispers, passed between those who looked on, that she was going to restore France and the royal family.
“I suppose you will wish to go directly to Vaucouleurs,” Durand said when they had left Domremy behind.
“I cannot impose on you and your wife a second time,” Joan replied. “I will stay in Vaucouleurs until I have gained Robert de Baudricourt's aid. You know someone there who will allow me to lodge with him.”
A long silence followed her statement, and Tikki wondered if Joan had presumed too much. She peeked out of the belt pouch to look at Durand's expression, hoping to gauge his reaction. He looked dumbfounded. Not in an I don't know anyone there and have no idea what you're talking about sort of way, but an I don't know how you knew that and I'm somewhat afraid to ask how you knew sort of way.
“I do,” he said finally, very slowly. “Henri le Royer. He can provide you with lodging while you wait for Robert de Baudricourt's aid.”
Tikki glanced up at Joan, and from where she was, she caught just a hint of the knowing smile she was giving her uncle. “God will thank him for it,” she said.
Durand hesitated, then tentatively said, “Jhennette, do you … do you truly believe Robert de Baudricourt will listen to you this time? I wouldn't want him to harm you because of your persistence, and he did tell me to give you a good slapping last time, if you'll recall.”
“He will not listen this time,” Joan answered. “He will not harm me, either. He is a stubborn man, Uncle, but he is not rash. You needn't worry.”
She turned out to be right, more or less. Robert de Baudricourt was no more inclined to listen to Joan this time than he had been the first time. Joan, to her credit, probably would have persuaded him to give in eventually if she hadn't played the prophecy card. But in the middle of their dialogue, she asked, “Have you not heard that it has been prophesied that France will be ruined by a woman and restored by a virgin from the borders of Lorraine?” and Robert de Baudricourt's expression went from disinterest to a scowl.
“Fables,” he snapped.
“You would call a prophecy of Saint Bede a fable?” Joan challenged. A hush fell over those who had stopped to listen to Joan and Robert's heated conversation. Tikki smiled to herself. That was a good save, Joan. Refusing to acknowledge a prophecy made by a saint in this day and age would make Robert de Baudricourt out to be at best negligent in his faith, and at worst a heretic.
He chose his next words carefully, almost meticulously. “What proof have you that you expect to fulfill Saint Bede's prophecy rather than the prophecy by Merlyn?”
The hush over the crowd grew, if possible, even quieter. Joan's answer rang out loud and clear. “I place no stock in the words of a man of whom we cannot even confirm the existence. I only trust in the prophecies which were made by those who served my Lord. And Saint Bede has said that France is to be restored by a virgin from Lorraine.”
“You presume privileges above your own station, girl,” Robert de Baudricourt said. “The daughter of a shepherd will not restore France, whether she is a virgin or not.” He made a shooing motion at her with his hand. “Back to your father's house with you. I've had enough of your silly games.”
Joan frowned, but she left obediently. Henri le Royer's wife, Catherine, greeted her at the door when she arrived back at their house.
“You have such tenacity, arguing with Lord Robert de Baudricourt like that,” Catherine remarked as she took Joan's cloak. “I've never met a young woman so bold.”
Tikki could practically hear the smile in Joan's voice when she replied, “Arguing? I had thought we were having a rather civil conversation until he sent me away.”
Catherine chuckled, but her next question was solemn. “Is it true, what you said? That France is to be saved by a virgin from Lorraine?”
“It will be, as soon as Robert de Baudricourt allows me to go to the aid of the dauphin,” Joan answered cheerfully. “But for the meantime, madame, might I do some small service for you?”
After much insistence from Catherine that Joan was a guest and shouldn't be doing the household chores, and equal insistence from Joan that she compensate for her imposition on the le Royers' home, Catherine finally gave in and fetched needle and thread, along with clothes needing to be darned. Joan thanked her with a smile, and went out in front of the house to work.
Tikki poked her head out of Joan's belt pouch, just enough to watch her sew. “You work too much,” she teased. “Catherine said you didn't have to do this.”
Joan glanced at Tikki, and her lips quirked up on one side in amusement. “And you're as bad as Madame le Royer, for discouraging me from it.”
She had been working for several minutes when footsteps approached from behind. Tikki's view from the top of the belt pouch swiveled as Joan turned to see who was approaching. It was a man, tall and well-built, dressed in the livery of a knight. His face was weathered in the way that all soldiers' faces seemed to be. Dark hair was cropped just above his ears in the military fashion. It was hard to decipher his expression—there was something almost hungry in his eyes. Avid curiosity, perhaps?
“Good morrow, Joan la Pucelle,” he said when he had come within earshot. “My name is Jean de Metz. I am a knight in service to my Lord Robert de Baudricourt.”
Joan had hardly glanced at the man—Jean—when she had turned at his approach, but now she looked up from her work to meet his eyes. Tikki sank down in the belt pouch to avoid being spotted. “Jean de Metz,” Joan repeated. “And why do you come to me, sir?”
Jean, for a moment, looked to be at a loss for what to say, but he collected himself admirably quickly. “My friend, what are you doing here? Will not the King be expelled from the kingdom and we become English?”
Joan scrutinized his face, as if searching for something there. Then, apparently satisfied with whatever she had found in him, she answered. “I have come to this royal town to speak to Robert de Baudricourt, to the end that he might bring me, or have me brought, to the King; but he pays no attention to me or my words. Nevertheless, before mid-Lent I must be before the King even if I must wear my feet down to the knees. For truly no one in the world, neither kings, nor dukes, nor the King of Scotland's daughter, nor anyone else can regain the kingdom of France; there is no aid except myself—although I would prefer to spin wool beside my mother, because this is not of my proper estate—but it is necessary that I go and do this, for my Lord wishes that I do it.”
Perhaps it was Tikki's imagination, but his voice seemed to soften as he asked, “And who, fair maid, is your Lord?”
“He is the Lord of Heaven,” Joan said in a tone that most girls her age would have reserved for speaking of the men they fancied. “My Lord is God.”
Jean took both Tikki and Joan by surprise then, by clasping Joan's hand in the fashion of a knight pledging fealty to their lord. Her needle and thread fell into her lap forgotten. “Joan la Pucelle,” he said solemnly. “I give you my word that with God as my aid, I will deliver you before the King.”
There was a pause. Joan seemed to have been rendered speechless. But Tikki saw her grip Jean's hands tightly, a silent acceptance of his promise. He smiled down at her, obviously pleased to be of help.
“Thank you, sir,” Joan said finally.
He released her hand. “There is no need for you to thank me. How soon do you wish to leave?”
“Rather now than tomorrow,” she answered, “and tomorrow rather than later.” She was almost squirming in her seat with excitement now; Tikki was jostled lightly by the belt purse as Joan shifted back and forth.
Jean de Metz looked Joan over. “Do you wish to go with your own clothes?”
Inwardly, Tikki cringed. She hadn't thought of that. All sorts of unsavory characters lurked around the roads, especially in disputed territory. For a young woman, the odds of making it on those roads with both her purse and her virtue intact were very slim. In order to get to the dauphin, Joan would have to cross straight through that territory, thereby putting herself in serious danger.
Joan, however, didn't seem to have nearly as many reservations about the matter as Tikki did. “I would be willing to go with male clothes, if I were in a position to obtain them.”
But didn't Joan's beloved Church excommunicate women who took up men's clothing?
Tikki would have to ask her about that later.
“It's settled, then,” Jean decided, propping his hands on his hips just above the belt that held his scabbard in place. “I have a servant whose clothing should fit you well. I will bring you clothes and boots of his, and I shall see about providing you a horse and whatever else you should require.”
Jean was as good as his word. Within the day, a set of men's clothing, complete with doublet, hosen, aiguillettes, and boots, had been delivered to the le Royers' home. Joan tried the clothes on that night, albeit with some difficulty figuring out how it was supposed to be put on.
“Won't you get in trouble with the Church for wearing this?” Tikki asked as Joan fumbled to tie the aiguilettes in place.
“The Church makes exceptions in cases of necessity,” Joan replied in a distracted half-mumble without taking her eyes off the task at hand. “Such a case as this is undoubtedly one of necessity. You don't need to worry, Tikki. My attire is a minimal matter when compared to my chastity.” And she left it at that.
Jean de Metz wasn't the only one to seek out la Pucelle, either. A summons was sent to her from the Duke of Lorraine, and the entire population of Vaucouleurs came together to provide her with men's clothes for the journey, along with a horse that Tikki was pretty sure had cost several francs. Word was spreading of the shepherd girl who wanted to save France.
Accompanied by Durand, Jean, and a safe-conduct from the duke himself, Joan obeyed her summons to Lorraine. Tikki had to smile to herself when the first words out of Joan's mouth after introducing herself were “I wish to go to France, my lord.” The duke smiled, too, and said that he knew. Though the duke's poor health didn't allow him to converse with her for more than an hour or so, he seemed quite fond of Joan.
The duke asked, towards the end of their conversation, if Joan's voices could tell her if he might recover his health. Joan's regretful reply was that she did not know. She did, however, tell him that he was sure to never recover his health if he didn't take back his wife and end his illicit affair at once.
“Forgive me for saying so, my lord, but you have been behaving very sinfully,” she said.
He didn't seem insulted by her statement. Instead, he thanked her for her advice, and gifted her with four francs; “for your travels,” he said. “I wish you the best of luck.”
Joan bent to kiss his hand. “Thank you,” she murmured. “I shall pray for your good health.”
Robert de Baudricourt was no more charitable when Joan returned to Vaucouleurs than he had been when she had left for Lorraine. “You shouldn't have taken the trouble of returning here,” he said when he met her on her way through the city gates. “You may as well have gone straight back to your father's house.”
Rather than silently accept his harsh words, as she had done on the past two occasions, Joan gave him a stony, determined stare. “You still doubt,” she said. “So I will give you proof. On my word, this very day the Armagnacs have lost their fight against the English convoys to Orleans, and Sir John Stewart of Scotland is dead because of it. The next time we speak, the commanders will have told you of their defeat.” She said no more, and rode to the le Royers' house with no further stops. When Tikki asked her how she knew about the defeat of the Armagnacs, she was given a by-now familiar reply: “I was told of it by my voices.”
Sure enough, the next time Joan went before Robert de Baudricourt, he held a tattered letter in his hand, and was gaping at her as if he'd seen a ghost. “They lost,” he said hoarsely.
Joan bowed her head. “I had told you that it would be so, sir.”
Robert de Baudricourt cleared his throat, a slightly sheepish cast making its way onto his face. “You…you still wish to go to France, then?”
“More than ever, sir,” Joan replied. “I would leave this very minute were I given your escort.”
He hesitated, looking her over in her peasant's gown for a minute before shaking himself and instructing, “Stay here.” He vanished inside the doors of his estate.
“This is it, Tikki,” Joan whispered to her, lifting the top of the belt pouch just enough to smile at her kwami. “I will finally be able to go to France.”
Robert de Baudricourt emerged several minutes later, with a new sealed letter in hand and several armed soldiers and squires behind him. One of the men was Jean de Metz. “Your letter of recommendation to the dauphin,” Robert de Baudricourt said, holding up the letter. He gave it to Jean. “These men will safeguard it until you have need of it. They are all of my estate, and have sworn an oath to conduct you to the dauphin well and safely.”
Jean de Metz bowed to Joan. “I look forward to fulfilling my word which I gave you, la Pucelle, to bring you to France.”
“Go prepare to leave,” Robert de Baudricourt instructed her. “This very day you shall depart for Chinon, and bring aid to the dauphin and to France.”
If Tikki could have seen Joan's face at that very moment, she was sure it would have been positively radiant. “Thank you, sir,” she said. “And may God bless you for this.”
Joan returned to the le Royers' house and changed into her new male clothing in record time. At a hastily remembered word, Catherine gathered together the other clothes that had been purchased for Joan by the citizens of Vaucouleurs and packed them, loading the bag onto the back of Joan's horse's saddle for her.
“It's almost night,” Tikki pointed out as Joan finished tying the last of her aiguillettes and reached for her hat. “Is it really a good idea to travel by night?”
“We will have less of a chance of being stopped by enemy soldiers at night,” Joan reasoned. She stuffed her hat on over her hair, and inspected herself in the mirror. Tikki looked, too, from over her shoulder. The effect was that of an effeminate-looking young man, except for perhaps one tiny detail…
There was a knock at the door. “Joan la Pucelle,” Jean de Metz's voice said through the door, “may I enter?”
“You may,” Joan answered, frowning at her reflection and twisting the hat this way and that in an attempt to rectify whatever it was that seemed so peculiarly off about her otherwise male appearance. Tikki hid under the bottom of Joan's doublet hurriedly. She did so just in time; the door swung open only seconds later to admit Jean.
He looked her over, more practical than interested. “You make a convincing man in that attire, la Pucelle.” He came closer and reached out to pluck the hat from her head. “Do you wish to cut your hair?”
So that was what was so off about Joan's appearance, Tikki realized. Joan still had the hairstyle of a peasant woman.
In the mirror, Tikki saw Joan yank her hair out of its high-pinned braid in a single fluid motion. The rich black tumbled down around her waist. “Yes. Please help me cut it off.”
Scissors were sent for immediately. Jean had her sit on the nearest chair, and she finger-combed her hair flat while they waited for the scissors to be brought.
Catherine came in a minute later, scissors in hand. “You sit,” she instructed Jean, pointing at him with the scissors. “I'll cut her hair. You may stay, but only so that I know how best to cut it.” Jean did as he was told. Catherine moved to stand behind Joan.
“Jhennette, are you sure about this?” she asked, taking a section of Joan's hair in her fingers. “You don't have to do this.”
“I'm sure,” Joan said without hesitation. “Cut it off.”
From where she hid under Joan's doublet, Tikki could only see the occasional glimpse in the mirror of how Catherine was cutting her hair. But she did see the long chunks of black hair that fell and scattered across the floor, and heard the snip of the scissors and the occasional input from Jean de Metz of “shorter” or “more around the ears, madame, not below.” Joan remained silent and almost entirely motionless through the entire process.
“There,” Catherine said finally, and Tikki peeked out at the mirror just in time to see her ruffling Joan's new haircut into place. It wasn't as short as Tikki had been expecting—it was cut in a sort of bob that just managed to cover the bottoms of her ears—but it was enough to complete Joan's disguise. “Even you might mistake her for a boy like this, Sir de Metz.”
“I might, at that,” Jean agreed.
Joan examined herself in the mirror, fingering a strand of her hair. “And now, I am truly wed to God,” she remarked with a slight smile.
The other knights and servants whom Robert de Baudricourt had instructed to accompany Joan were waiting at the gates of the city when she arrived on horseback with Jean de Metz in tow. Robert de Baudricourt himself was standing to one side of the gates. A large crowd of people had also gathered—here to see Joan off, no doubt—and their cheers were deafening.
“Good luck to you, la Pucelle!”
“Save us from those English mongrels!”
“Joan la Pucelle!” The voice was a woman's, and Joan wheeled her horse around to face its owner. Tikki peeked through the top of her belt pouch and saw a woman in the same sort of red peasant's wool Joan had been wearing not too long ago. “How will you manage, with all of the enemy soldiers along the way? Are you not afraid?”
“I am not afraid, madame,” Joan replied, and Tikki could hear her usual confident smile in her voice. “I am not afraid, because my way is unobstructed. If indeed there are soldiers along my path, my Lord and God will surely clear the way to the dauphin for me. I am not at all afraid,” she repeated. “For I was born to do this.”
“Joan, we must leave,” Jean called from the gateway.
“Of course,” Joan called back. She glanced at the woman for one lingering moment. “Take courage,” she urged. “France will soon be ours again.” Then she spurred her horse to join the men at the gates, which had already been opened.
“Go, Joan la Pucelle,” said Robert de Baudricourt. “Go to the dauphin, and do what you came here to do.”
Joan inclined her head towards him. “Thank you, sir. May God bless you, and the good people of your city.” And with that, she went through the gates.
Above all the clamor and cheering, the only words to ring out clearly were Robert de Baudricourt's, and they sent a chill down Tikki's spine: “Go, and let come what may!”

You also have been initiated into those mystery in which there are two pairs of eyes, and it is requisite that the pair which are beneath should be closed; and that when the pair that beneath are open that the pair above should be closed.

The Egyptians themselves were not aware of the meaning of the word Osiris before the Biblical era, what had happened to the mystery religion?
Only a small part of the priests ever were initiated.

Esoteric Meaning of the Osirian Cycle
Must look closely and not be deceived.
The esoteric is the superstition.
The ignorant involve themselves in the public rituals
If the fables had been only hollow promises, then Egypt would have been exposed as a sham.
The initiates of the Egyptian mysteries brought with them new ways of thinking.
They all also brought back a plan for a one world government.

Best New Horror Movies on Netflix: Autumn 2017
Tumblr media
There's an overwhelming amount of horror movies to sift through on Netflix, so I've decided to take out some of the legwork by compiling a list of the season's best new genre titles on Netflix's instant streaming service.
Please feel free to leave a comment with any I may have missed and share your thoughts on any of the films you watch. You can also peruse past installments of Best New Horror Moves on Netflix for more suggestions.
Tumblr media
1. The Void
Not afraid to wear its influences on its sleeve, The Void is a fun amalgam of genre favorites such as The Thing, Hellraiser, Prince of Darkness, The Beyond, and Assault on Precinct 13, along with a healthy dose of H.P. Lovecraft for good measure. The '80s inspiration is furthered by a plethora of practical effects and a pulsating, John Carpenter-esque synthesizer score. Set in the most understaffed hospital since Halloween 2, a small group of people fight to survive against Lovecraftian monsters and cultists. A lot of the plot points are familiar, but the astonishing effects are more than enough to make it feel fresh and exciting.
Tumblr media
2. The Transfiguration
Like a modern take on George A. Romero's Martin, The Transfiguration is a subversive vampire film. It's also an urban coming-of-age tale with social commentary. The plot concerns an adolescent boy (Eric Ruffin, The Good Wife) who is a practicing vampire in New York City. Not just an avid watcher of horror films - although he name-checks plenty of them - he partakes in murder to drink blood. He begins to question his outlook on life when he befriends a girl who's also an outcast (Chloe Levine, The Defenders). Although largely a somber, dramatic film, there are a couple of truly shocking moments. Due to how raw and real it feels, this one will stick with you.
Tumblr media
3. The Devil's Candy
Written and directed by Sean Byrne (The Loved Ones), The Devil's Candy combines elements of haunted house, demonic possession, and home invasion movies, all with a lean toward heavy metal music. It follows a struggling artist (a nearly unrecognizable Ethan Embry, Can’t Hardly Wait), his wife (Shiri Appleby, Roswell), and their teenage daughter (Kiara Glasco, Map to the Stars) as they move into a new home. Meanwhile, the house's disturbed former resident (the great Pruitt Taylor Vince, Constantine) returns, and he takes a liking to the young girl. It's akin to a 1970s slow-burner with modern sensibilities. The restrained approach allows the audience to become more invested in the characters, building toward an unpredictable and emotionally draining final act. Read my full review of the film here.
Tumblr media
4. A Dark Song
A Dark Song is an engrossing slow-burn horror film predominantly told with two actors in one location. The story involves a grieving woman (Catherine Walker, Ferocious Planet) who seeks the aid of an unstable cultist (Steve Oram, Sightseers) to perform an elaborate ritual that allows you to ask a guardian angel for a favor. She wants her deceased child back, but this is far from a Pet Sematary retread. It's all about the build-up, with some genuinely creepy moments along the way before it culminates in a tense finale. Irish writer-director Liam Gavin makes a powerful debut anchored by strong performances.
Tumblr media
5. What Happened to Monday
What Happened to Monday is set in the not too distant future, when a strict one-child policy is enforced in an effort to preserve the planet. Noomi Rapace (Prometheus) stars as septuplets, who hide from the government by sharing a life; each one only goes out during the day of the week for which they’re named. When Monday disappears, the other six siblings must track her down before someone else does. Rapace wonderfully diversifies the seven parts, and it's quite impressive to see them all seamlessly interacting with one another in the same shot. Willem Dafoe (Spider-Man) plays the girls' grandfather who raised them, while Glenn Close (Fatal Attraction) is the head of the agency stripping families of their children. Tommy Wirkola (Dead Snow) directs some superb action sequences in this sci-fi mystery thriller.
Tumblr media
6. American Fable
American Fable is true to its name, often playing out like something of a dark fairy tale in the country’s heartland, but its fantastical elements largely take a backseat to a rural drama with mystery/thriller elements. Writer-director Anne Hamilton, who got her start as an intern on Terrence Malick’s The Tree of Life, makes a dynamic feature debut. Set in the 1980s, the story revolves around Gitty (Peyton Kennedy, Odd Squad), an 11-year-old girl with an affinity for storytelling. She finds herself in a real-life fairy tale upon discovering a man (Richard Schiff, The West Wing) imprisoned in a silo on her family's struggling farm. The picture is an admirable American complement to Guillermo del Toro's Pan's Labyrinth; not only are their stories thematically analogous, but they also share a similar horned creature. Read my full review of the film here.
Tumblr media
7. Here Alone
Here Alone is a zombie movie in which the zombies are almost never on screen - and that's not a bad thing. It depicts the hardships Ann (Lucy Walters, Power) must endure and the elaborate precautions she must take in order to survive, weaving between two different points in time: early in the apocalypse with her husband (Shane West, A Walk to Remember) and their baby, and the present when she befriends a fellow survivor (Adam David Thompson, Mozart in the Jungle) and his teenage daughter. Director Rod Blackhurst (Amanda Knox) delivers a subtle, dramatic character piece with shades of The Walking Dead by crafting dynamic characters backed by engaging performances.
Tumblr media
8. Little Evil
Tucker and Dale vs Evil writer-director Eli Craig returns to horror-comedy with Little Evil. Having perfected his deadpan delivery on Parks and Recreation, Adam Scott makes awkward an artform as a man who believes his new wife's (Evangeline Lilly, Lost) 6-year-old son is the literal Antrichrist. The supporting cast, underutilized as they may be, is also great, including Bridget Everett (Patti Cakes), Clancy Brown (The Shawshank Redemption), Tyler Labine (Tucker and Dale vs Evil), Donald Faison (Scrubs), and Sally Field (Forrest Gump), who is Craig's mother. The most obvious influence is The Omen - it's even name-dropped in the movie - but there are also references to the likes of Poltergeist, Ghostbusters, Children of the Corn, Rosemary's Baby, Child's Play, and The Shining. It's not always laugh-out-loud funny, but it remains entertaining throughout.
Tumblr media
9. Patchwork
Patchwork is like a modern take on Frankenhooker with a dash of Re-Animator for good measure. It may not be as masterful a blend of horror and comedy as those '80s classics, but it's delightfully absurd just the same. It also offers a bit of social commentary, namely regarding the issues modern dating women face. Three girls - stuck up Jennifer (Tory Stolper), naive Ellie (Tracey Fairaway, Hellraiser: Revelations), and weird Madeline (Maria Blasucci) - are murdered, sewn together, and brought back to life by a mad scientist. They must learn to coexist in the same body in order to exact revenge. Cleverly conceived by director Tyler MacIntyre (Tragedy Girls), the girls are portrayed as one Frankenstein-ed creature in some shots and as three individual women in others.
Tumblr media
10. Death Note
While purists decry the changes that Death Note made from the popular Japanese manga on which it's based, those with an open mind (or, like me, unfamiliar with the source material) ought to enjoy this Netflix original film. A book labeled Death Note literally falls from the sky to the feet of Light (Nat Wolff, Paper Towns), granting the high school student the power to take the life of anyone whose name he writes inside. Quickly realizing its power without fully recognizing the responsibility, Light dishes out vigilante justice remotely, killing criminals and becoming a worldwide phenomenon. Also mixed up in it are Light's love interest (Margaret Qualley, The Leftovers), his detective father (Shea Whigham, American Hustle), a mysterious man trying to catch him (Lakeith Stanfield, Get Out), and Ryuk (Willem Dafoe, Spider-Man), the monstrous keeper of the book. There's a definite sense that the story has been condensed, things may have been lost in translation, and the fast pacing takes away from the weight of the situation. It may not be a highlight of his filmography, but director Adam Wingard (Blair Witch, You’re Next) delivers a fun, stylish movie with some gory, Rube Goldbergian deaths a la Final Destination.
Tumblr media
Bonus: Castlevania: Season 1
Castlevania is a Netflix original animated series based on the classic Konami video game series. Season 1 consists of only four episodes totaling around 90 minutes, resembling more of an anime film than a show, but it ends without a conclusion to the story. Thankfully, a second season is already in the works. Following the murder of his wife, Dracula summons a scourge of goblins to destroy the region of Wallachia and dismember every person along the way. Trevor Belmont, the last in an infamous family excommunicated for dealing in black magic while slaying monsters, leads the charge to bring down the legendary vampire. It's heavy on exposition, but each episode contains a couple of big action scenes to hold viewers over through the abundance of dialogue. Adult language, violence, and gore are on full display, looking great in old-school-style animation. The series is written by comic book scribe Warren Ellis (Red) and stars the voice talents of Richard Armitage (The Hobbit), James Callis (Battlestar Galactica), and Graham McTavish (Preacher).

WHAT TO WATCH THIS WEEKEND January 25, 2019  - The Kid Who Would Be King, Serenity
(Yes, I realize the weekend just ended for most, but hey, might as well get an early crack at NEXT weekend, huh? January is winding down with what’s going to be seem like a fairly boring weekend after last week’s M. Night Shyamalan sequel disappointing when compared to the sensation of Dragon Ball Super: Brolly, a movie that few movie writers knew about before Wednesday but grossed $21 million in six days. But hey, variety is the spice of life, and the two movies opening wide this week certainly add some spice with a duo of films from reputable British writer/directors.
Tumblr media
THE KID WHO WOULD BE KING  (20thCentury Fox)
Written and directed by Joe Cornish (Attack the Block) Cast: Louis Ashbourne Serkis, Dean Chaumoo, Angus Imrie, Tom Taylor, Rebecca Ferguson, Patrick Stewart, Rhianna Doris, Denise Gough MPAA Rating: PG
On the one hand, this action-adventure film is an exciting one, because it’s the second feature from Joe Cornish following his astonishing 2011 debut Attack the Block, but also, because it’s Cornish’s first studio feature for a mainstream audience, geared towards family audiences in particular.
It’s a fairly standard take on the King Arthur mythos with a young British lad (played by Andy Serkis’ son) finding Excalibur, the legendary sword in the stone and having to team with his best friend (and a couple school bullies) to take on the return of Morgana le Fey (Rebecca Ferguson).
It seems like a good idea to get kids, especially young boys, interested in the tales of King Arthur even though the last few movies have bombed as neither Guy Ritchie’s 2017 film King Arthur: Legend of the Sword or the Jerry Bruckheimer-produced 2004 movie King Arthur found much of an audience. In fact, trying to bring any British legend to the screen and get American moviegoers interested might be a fool’s errand, as seen by last year’s Robin Hood bomb.
The thing is that other than Patrick Stewart – star of Fox’s ongoing X-Men franchise, which seems to be in limbo these days -- and Rebecca Ferguson from the last couple Mission: Impossible movies, there are no stars in the movie that could entice those on the fence about whether to see this movie.  On the other hand, reviews have generally been good which could help boost interest a little more going into the weekend.
At first, I thought maybe this would end up with around $10 million, but it’s basically going to be a family movie coming into a market where most other family films have been in theaters for three weeks or more. (Dragon Ball is an exception.) Fox was also able to get it into more than 3,4000 nationwide, because wisely, it waited until after Glass opened for this.  Because of this, I’m going to goose up my number to somewhere between $11 and 13 million with most of the family movies geared towards boys falling away and Joe Cornish’s older fans maybe giving this a look. Sadly, the movie is not being marketed as “from the director of Attack the Block” as it clearly should be.
Tumblr media
Mini-Review: Granted that Attack the Block was always going to be a hard act to follow for Joe Cornish, and yet he has written and directed a follow-up that might appeal to younger moviegoers though maybe not so much Cornish’s older teen fans from his directorial debut.
Louis Ashbourne Serkis, who is indeed the son of Andy Serkis, plays Alex Elliot, a fairly normal 10-year-old, who stands up to a couple school bullies and while being chased by them finds a sword embedded in rock on a construction site. It is indeed the fabled “Sword in the Stone” Excalibur as used by King Arthur. Along with his best friend Bedders (Dean Chaumoo) and their two relentless bullies (Tom Taylor, Rhianna Doris), they all go on a quest to fight Arthur’s evil sister Morgana (Rebecca Ferguson) and save Britain.
The first major hurdle this otherwise fine kids’ action-adventure faces is the fairly weak cast, because without liking Alex or his colleagues, it’s hard to root for them even with the stakes never feeling too great. The one exception is Angus Imrie as the young Merlin who somehow manages to get more laughs than the older Merlin, played by Sir Patrick Stewart. Alex’s mother is played by Claire Foy lookalike Denise Gough, and she also doesn’t bring much to what should have been touching scenes with Serkis. Ferguson is decent as Morgana, although the role doesn’t give her much to do.
Using many of the same creative team used by buddy and sometime producer Edgar Wright on Baby Driver, including DP Tim Pope and editors Jonathan Amos and Paul Machliss, as well as production designer Marcus Rowland, it’s a safe bet that Cornish has made another movie that looks damn good.  As with Attack, Cornish’s FX team perfectly integrate the many CG beasties with the human characters.
The thing is that Cornish does a fine job with this material, so that the movie is better than the Percy Jackson movies or other similar family films, and he should be commended for making such a smooth transition to studio family films. Even so, by the third act, I was just getting very bored, especially when I thought it was ending, and it went on for another 15 minutes.
The Kid Who Would Be King is perfectly fine -- it has its moments -- but there’s something about it that left me wanting, because it seems like it should have been a lot better overall.
Rating: 6.5/10

SERENITY  (Aviron)
Written and directed by Steven Knight (Locke, Redemption, “Peaky Blinders,” “Taboo”) Cast: Matthew McConaughey, Anne Hathaway, Diane Lane, Jason Clarke, Djimon Hounsou  MPAA Rating: R
The other new release of the weekend is something that possibly could have done very well in the ‘90s or early ‘00s as an erotic thriller, a genre that has had its ups and downs but has mostly done decently at the box office. This is the third movie from Steven Knight, the director of Lockeand writer of Eastern Promises, “Peaky Blinders” and “Taboo,” though I’m not sure his previous hits will convince many to see this in theaters.
Matthew McConaughey plays fishing boat captain Baker Dill, who has been living in hiding on Plymouth Island after his divorce. His ex-wife Karen, played by Anne Hathaway, shows wanting her to kill her violent and abusive husband (Jason Clarke) in order to save her and Baker’s teen son.
McConaughey’s career has been all over the place in recent years, but his recent crime-thriller White Boy Rick didn’t do very well, and it feels like Serenity is heading towards a similar fate. In fact, McConaughey has been in quite a string of bombs since winning an Oscar for 2013’s Dallas Buyers Club with his biggest hit being the animated Sing. His most high-profile movie The Dark Tower made $120 million worldwide based on $60 million budget which made it barely profitable but especially disappointing due to its studio’s franchise plans.
Having Anne Hathaway could help as she’s been a lot more careful about her choices since winning her own Oscar a year earlier with last year’s Ocean’s 8, in which she played herself, being a relative hit with almost $300 million worldwide. Her last movie with McConaughey was Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar in 2014, which grossed $188 million domestically, so that’s somewhat of a bonus. The cast is rounded out by the ever-present Jason Clarke, who has yet to really break-out despite being involved in many Oscar-caliber films, as well as Djimon Hounsou, who is becoming a superhero film regular, having just appeared in Aquaman and having roles in Captain Marveland Shazam.  (Some might remember that he also had a great scene with Chris Pratt early in the first Guardians of the Galaxy movie.)
While erotic thrillers have done well in the past, this movie was originally supposed to come out last September, and there was advertising trailers all summer – I know that because I saw the trailer for this in front of a ton of movies – but then it was moved to January, which is never a good sign of faith. This is a rare release from fledgling distributor Aviron Pictures, who released just two movies in 2018.  Aviron is releasing this one into just 2,500 theaters, which might already be too many screens considering how little marketing the film has
Reviews are still embargoed until Thursday (never a good sign), but I’m probably not going to review the movie, since I saw it quite some time ago, though I do have to say that that the big twist in this movie angered me more than anything in M. Night Shyamalan’s Glass.
This movie looks like the epitome of a late January bomb, one that probably won’t come close to $10 million for the weekend and might even end up closer to $5 million or a little more. Either way, it won’t have to make that much to end up in the top 5 this weekend since it’s going up against many movies that have been playing since before Christmas.
This week’s Top 10 should look something like this…
1. Glass   (Universal) - $19 million -53%
2. The Kid Who Would Be King  (20thCentury Fox) - $11.6 million N/A
3. The Upside (STX) – $10 million -33%
4. Serenity (Aviron) - $6.5 million N/A
5. Aquaman (Warner Bros.)  - $5.5 million -47%
6. Dragon Ball Super: Brolly (Funimation) – $5 million -49%
7. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-verse  (Sony) - $4.8 million -37%
8. A Dog’s Way Home  (Sony) – $4.2 million -42%
9. Mary Poppins Returns  (Disney) - $3.1 million -45%
10. Escape Room  (Sony) - $2.8 million -46%
LIMITED RELEASES
Many of my colleagues will be heading to the Sundance Film Festival this week, but I’m not going, so I don’t have much to say about it. Sorry!
On a more local level , we get  FIAF ANIMATION FIRST FEST over the weekend, focused on the booming French animation film industry with a 20thanniversary screening of Michel Ocelot’s Kirikou and the Sorceress and 17 US  and New York premieres, including the New York premiere of Funanand a number of shorts programs. Studio Ghibli’s Isao Takahata, who died last year, will be honored. You can read the full program and schedule of events Here.  I personally have never attended, but if I wasn’t busy I might check out some of the programs.
As far as the limited releases…
Tumblr media
Following its November qualifying run as Germany’s Oscar entry and with two Oscar nominations under its belt, Oscar-winning filmmaker Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck’s (The Lives of Others) new movie NEVER LOOK AWAY (Sony Pictures Classics). The historic drama is loosely based on the life of visual artist Gerhard Richter with Tom Schilling (Woman in Gold) playing a young artist who has watched East Berlin go from Nazi occupation, watching his older sister be sentenced to death due to her mental illness by a ruthless Nazi doctor (Sebastian Koch), to falling in love with a young woman (Paula Beer) who happens to be that doctor’s daughter and escaping to West Berlin during the country’s contemporary art movement.  I found the movie to be overly long and a little confusing, because I wasn’t sure what the movie was supposed to be about until about 30 minutes into it.
Just a few months after his last film The Mercy barely got a glance, The Theory of Everything director James Marsh’s new heist film  KING OF THIEVES (Saban Films) will open in theaters (including New York’s Cinema Village) and on VOD and Digital HD on Friday. The true crime tale about a group of retired crooks trying to stage an elaborate jewelry heist stars an ensemble of legendary British actors in Michael Caine, Jim Broadbent, Michael Gambon, Ray Winstone, Tom Courtenay along with Charlie Cox aka Daredevil. I had high hopes for this movie being better than the likes of Zach Braff’s Going in Style, something classier like last year’s The Old Man and the Gun, but sadly, it’s an obvious money grab for older British men and women reminiscing about all the better crime movies made by the cast.
Claus Räfle’s docudrama THE INVISIBLES (Greenwich) follows four German-Jewish youth who decide to stay behind in Berlin as World War II is beginning, living vicariously while dodging Nazi officials before eventually joining the resistance.  This story of survival opens at New York’s Quad Cinema and Landmark 57, as well as in L.A. at the Laemmle Royal on Friday.
The Brazilian animated film TITO AND THE BIRDS  (Shout! Studios) from filmmakers Gustavo Steinberg, Gabriel Bitar and André Catoto tells the story of a boy and his father who are looking for the cure for an illness inflicted on someone after being scared. After playing a number of film festivals, it also opens at the Quad Cinema in New York
It’s hard to believe that 88-year-old French New Wave filmmaker Jean Luc Goddard is still with us and making movies, but all the recent repertory series in New York and L.A. have been leading up to his latest film THE IMAGE BOOK (Kino Lorber). Don’t know much about this film which received a special Palme d’or at Cannes last year, but apparently it’s a “collage film essay,” which means that it probably doesn’t have a plot or narrative that’s easy to explain. It opens at the IFC Center and Lincoln Center in New York.
Tom Arnold and Sean Astin star in Ron Carlson’s Dead Ant (Cinedigm) as the members of an ‘80s hair metal band called Sonic Grave who had a power ballad hit 30 years earlier, and while they’re on a road trip to Coachella, they find themselves trying to be relevant again…. Until they’re attacked by giant killer ants. Okay, I think I need to see this movie, as it seems like my kind of movie.
Playing for one night only nationwide on Thursday as a Fathom Event is Timothy Woodward Jr.’s horror film The Final Wish (Cinedigm), starring the wonderful Lin Shaye (Insidious), Michael Welsh, Melissa Bolona and Tony Todd, and produced by Jeffrey Reddic (writer/producer of Final Destination).  Welsh plays Aaron Hammond who returns to his hometown after the death of his father to help his bereaved mother (Shaye) and deal with the demons from his past, finding a mysterious item while going through his father’s belongings.
Opening at New York’s Cinema Village on Friday and at L.A.’s Laemmle Music Hall on Feb. 1 is Francois Margolin’s controversial French drama Jihadists (Cinema Libre), co-directed by by Lemine Ould Salem, which was banned in France. It follows two filmmakers who were given access to fundamentalist clerics of Sunni Islam to show what it’s like to live your life under jihadi rule.
From Bollywood comes Vikas Bahl ‘s drama Super 30 (Reliance Entertainment), starring Hrithik Roshan as Patna-based mathematician Anand Kumar, who runs the famed and prestigious Super 30 program in Patna. Not sure of the theater count but it’s probably opening in a dozen or so theaters.
Opening on Wednesday following its premiere at Doc-NYC is Robert Townsend’s doc The 5 Browns: Digging through the Darkness, which looks at the 5 Browns, a group of Julliard-trained sibling pianists who rose to stardom only to be devastated when it’s revealed that the three sisters were sexually abused by their manager father Keith Brown. It opens at the IFC Center for a single-week run.
Also opening at the Cinema Village and in select cities is John Kauffman’s Heartlock (Dark Star Pictures), a love story about a female prison guard, played by Lesley-Ann Brandt,  who becomes the subject of affection from a charming male convict (Alexander Dreymo) who wants to use their relationship to help him escape.
STREAMING
Tumblr media
The main film streaming on Netflix on Friday is Jonas Akerlund’s POLAR, his follow-up to Lords of Chaos, which premiered at Sundance last year and comes out a few weeks later. Based on the Dark Horse graphic novel, it stars Mads Mikkelson as assassin Duncan Vizla, known as the Black Kaiser, who is getting ready for retirement in a suburban town when he’s dragged back into one last job, but when it goes wrong, Duncan’s new love interest (Vanessa Hudgens) is dragged into it. I’ve never read the graphic novel, and I’ve generally been mixed on Akerlund’s films, but this one is definitely in the same absolute insanity realm of his earlier film Spun with a lot of crazy over-the-top performance from the likes of Matt Lucas (Little Britain) and Johnny Knoxville (Jackass), but in this case, it’s not a good thing. Mikkelson gives another stellar performance, and Hudgens is also quite good (didn’t even recognize her) but the craziness surrounding them from Lucas and the other assassins sent after Duncan made it hard to enjoy the film, especially compared to Mikkelson’s other upcoming film Arctic, but hey, it’s on Netflix so I’m sure people will watch it anyway.
Speaking of which, I also want to note that last week, I didn’t notice that a science fiction film called IO: Last on Earth, starring Margaret Qualley (Novitiate),was also streaming on Netflix. I haven’t watched it yet, but one of the writers also co-wrote Claire Carée’s Embers, which is one of my favorite festival discoveries from the past few years.
REPERTORY
METROGRAPH (NYC):
The Metrograph has a couple new series starting Friday, including Hou Hsiao-Hsien in the 21st Century, featuring 35mm prints of four of the Chinese filmmaker’s recent films: Millenium Mambo, Three Times, Flight of the Red Balloon and Café Lumieré. Every religious belief system...is a complete blasphemy...in the eyes of every other religious belief system...and all are a complete blasphemy in the eyes of rational unbelief...
For example, as outlined by Atheist Ireland ...
“Here are the 25 blasphemous quotes that we first published on 1 January 2010, along with the quotation that has caused the Irish police to investigate Stephen Fry.
1. Jesus Christ, when asked if he was the son of God, in Matthew 26:64: “Thou hast said: nevertheless I say unto you, Hereafter shall ye see the Son of man sitting on the right hand of power, and coming in the clouds of heaven.” According to the Christian Bible, the Jewish chief priests and elders and council deemed this statement by Jesus to be blasphemous, and they sentenced Jesus to death for saying it.
2. Jesus Christ, talking to Jews about their God, in John 8:44: “Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him.” This is one of several chapters in the Christian Bible that can give a scriptural foundation to Christian anti-Semitism. The first part of John 8, the story of “whoever is without sin cast the first stone”, was not in the original version, but was added centuries later. The original John 8 is a debate between Jesus and some Jews. In brief, Jesus calls the Jews who disbelieve him sons of the Devil, the Jews try to stone him, and Jesus runs away and hides.
3. Muhammad, quoted in Hadith of Bukhari, Vol 1 Book 8 Hadith 427: “May Allah curse the Jews and Christians for they built the places of worship at the graves of their prophets.” This quote is attributed to Muhammad on his death-bed as a warning to Muslims not to copy this practice of the Jews and Christians. It is one of several passages in the Koran and in Hadith that can give a scriptural foundation to Islamic anti-Semitism, including the assertion in Sura 5:60 that Allah cursed Jews and turned some of them into apes and swine.
4. Mark Twain, describing the Christian Bible in Letters from the Earth, 1909: “Also it has another name – The Word of God. For the Christian thinks every word of it was dictated by God. It is full of interest. It has noble poetry in it; and some clever fables; and some blood-drenched history; and some good morals; and a wealth of obscenity; and upwards of a thousand lies… But you notice that when the Lord God of Heaven and Earth, adored Father of Man, goes to war, there is no limit. He is totally without mercy — he, who is called the Fountain of Mercy. He slays, slays, slays! All the men, all the beasts, all the boys, all the babies; also all the women and all the girls, except those that have not been deflowered. He makes no distinction between innocent and guilty… What the insane Father required was blood and misery; he was indifferent as to who furnished it.” Twain’s book was published posthumously in 1939. His daughter, Clara Clemens, at first objected to it being published, but later changed her mind in 1960 when she believed that public opinion had grown more tolerant of the expression of such ideas. That was half a century before Fianna Fail and the Green Party imposed a new blasphemy law on the people of Ireland.
5. Tom Lehrer, The Vatican Rag, 1963: “Get in line in that processional, step into that small confessional. There, the guy who’s got religion’ll tell you if your sin’s original. If it is, try playing it safer, drink the wine and chew the wafer. Two, four, six, eight, time to transubstantiate!”
6. Randy Newman, God’s Song, 1972: “And the Lord said: I burn down your cities – how blind you must be. I take from you your children, and you say how blessed are we. You all must be crazy to put your faith in me. That’s why I love mankind.”
7. James Kirkup, The Love That Dares to Speak its Name, 1976: “While they prepared the tomb I kept guard over him. His mother and the Magdalen had gone to fetch clean linen to shroud his nakedness. I was alone with him… I laid my lips around the tip of that great cock, the instrument of our salvation, our eternal joy. The shaft, still throbbed, anointed with death’s final ejaculation.” This extract is from a poem that led to the last successful blasphemy prosecution in Britain, when Denis Lemon was given a suspended prison sentence after he published it in the now-defunct magazine Gay News. In 2002, a public reading of the poem, on the steps of St. Martin-in-the-Fields church in Trafalgar Square, failed to lead to any prosecution. In 2008, the British Parliament abolished the common law offences of blasphemy and blasphemous libel.
8. Matthias, son of Deuteronomy of Gath, in Monty Python’s Life of Brian, 1979: “Look, I had a lovely supper, and all I said to my wife was that piece of halibut was good enough for Jehovah.”
9. Rev Ian Paisley MEP to the Pope in the European Parliament, 1988: “I denounce you as the Antichrist.” Paisley’s website describes the Antichrist as being “a liar, the true son of the father of lies, the original liar from the beginning… he will imitate Christ, a diabolical imitation, Satan transformed into an angel of light, which will deceive the world.”
10. Conor Cruise O’Brien, 1989: “In the last century the Arab thinker Jamal al-Afghani wrote: ‘Every Muslim is sick and his only remedy is in the Koran.’ Unfortunately the sickness gets worse the more the remedy is taken.”
11. Frank Zappa, 1989: “If you want to get together in any exclusive situation and have people love you, fine – but to hang all this desperate sociology on the idea of The Cloud-Guy who has The Big Book, who knows if you’ve been bad or good – and cares about any of it – to hang it all on that, folks, is the chimpanzee part of the brain working.”
12. Salman Rushdie, 1990: “The idea of the sacred is quite simply one of the most conservative notions in any culture, because it seeks to turn other ideas – uncertainty, progress, change – into crimes.” In 1989, Ayatollah Khomeini of Iran issued a fatwa ordering Muslims to kill Rushdie because of blasphemous passages in Rushdie’s novel The Satanic Verses.
13. Bjork, 1995: “I do not believe in religion, but if I had to choose one it would be Buddhism. It seems more livable, closer to men… I’ve been reading about reincarnation, and the Buddhists say we come back as animals and they refer to them as lesser beings. Well, animals aren’t lesser beings, they’re just like us. So I say fuck the Buddhists.”
14. Amanda Donohoe on her role in the Ken Russell movie Lair of the White Worm, 1995: “Spitting on Christ was a great deal of fun. I can’t embrace a male god who has persecuted female sexuality throughout the ages, and that persecution still goes on today all over the world.”
15. George Carlin, 1999: “Religion easily has the greatest bullshit story ever told. Think about it. Religion has actually convinced people that there’s an invisible man living in the sky who watches everything you do, every minute of every day. And the invisible man has a special list of ten things he does not want you to do. And if you do any of these ten things, he has a special place, full of fire and smoke and burning and torture and anguish, where he will send you to live and suffer and burn and choke and scream and cry forever and ever ’til the end of time! But He loves you. He loves you, and He needs money! He always needs money! He’s all-powerful, all-perfect, all-knowing, and all-wise, somehow just can’t handle money! Religion takes in billions of dollars, they pay no taxes, and they always need a little more. Now, talk about a good bullshit story. Holy Shit!”
16. Paul Woodfull as Ding Dong Denny O’Reilly, The Ballad of Jaysus Christ, 2000: “He said me ma’s a virgin and sure no one disagreed, Cause they knew a lad who walks on water’s handy with his feet… Jaysus oh Jaysus, as cool as bleedin’ ice, With all the scrubbers in Israel he could not be enticed, Jaysus oh Jaysus, it’s funny you never rode, Cause it’s you I do be shoutin’ for each time I shoot me load.”
17. Jesus Christ, in Jerry Springer The Opera, 2003: “Actually, I’m a bit gay.” In 2005, the Christian Institute tried to bring a prosecution against the BBC for screening Jerry Springer the Opera, but the UK courts refused to issue a summons.
18. Tim Minchin, Ten-foot Cock and a Few Hundred Virgins, 2005: “So you’re gonna live in paradise, With a ten-foot cock and a few hundred virgins, So you’re gonna sacrifice your life, For a shot at the greener grass, And when the Lord comes down with his shiny rod of judgment, He’s gonna kick my heathen ass.”
19. Richard Dawkins in The God Delusion, 2006: “The God of the Old Testament is arguably the most unpleasant character in all fiction: jealous and proud of it; a petty, unjust, unforgiving control-freak; a vindictive, bloodthirsty ethnic cleanser; a misogynistic, homophobic, racist, infanticidal, genocidal, filicidal, pestilential, megalomaniacal, sadomasochistic, capriciously malevolent bully.” In 2007 Turkish publisher Erol Karaaslan was charged with the crime of insulting believers for publishing a Turkish translation of The God Delusion. He was acquitted in 2008, but another charge was brought in 2009. Karaaslan told the court that “it is a right to criticise religions and beliefs as part of the freedom of thought and expression.”
20. Pope Benedict XVI quoting a 14th century Byzantine emperor, 2006: “Show me just what Muhammad brought that was new and there you will find things only evil and inhuman, such as his command to spread by the sword the faith he preached.” This statement has already led to both outrage and condemnation of the outrage. The Organisation of the Islamic Conference, the world’s largest Muslim body, said it was a “character assassination of the prophet Muhammad”. The Malaysian Prime Minister said that “the Pope must not take lightly the spread of outrage that has been created.” Pakistan’s foreign Ministry spokesperson said that “anyone who describes Islam as a religion as intolerant encourages violence”. The European Commission said that “reactions which are disproportionate and which are tantamount to rejecting freedom of speech are unacceptable.”
21. Christopher Hitchens in God is not Great, 2007: “There is some question as to whether Islam is a separate religion at all… Islam when examined is not much more than a rather obvious and ill-arranged set of plagiarisms, helping itself from earlier books and traditions as occasion appeared to require… It makes immense claims for itself, invokes prostrate submission or ‘surrender’ as a maxim to its adherents, and demands deference and respect from nonbelievers into the bargain. There is nothing—absolutely nothing—in its teachings that can even begin to justify such arrogance and presumption.”
22. Ian O’Doherty, 2009: “(If defamation of religion was illegal) it would be a crime for me to say that the notion of transubstantiation is so ridiculous that even a small child should be able to see the insanity and utter physical impossibility of a piece of bread and some wine somehow taking on corporeal form. It would be a crime for me to say that Islam is a backward desert superstition that has no place in modern, enlightened Europe and it would be a crime to point out that Jewish settlers in Israel who believe they have a God given right to take the land are, frankly, mad. All the above assertions will, no doubt, offend someone or other.”
23. Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O’Connor, 2009: “Whether a person is atheist or any other, there is in fact in my view something not totally human if they leave out the transcendent… we call it God… I think that if you leave that out you are not fully human.” Because atheism is not a religion, the Irish blasphemy law does not protect atheists from abusive and insulting statements about their fundamental beliefs. While atheists are not seeking such protection, we include the statement here to point out that it is discriminatory that this law does not hold all citizens equal.
24. Dermot Ahern, Irish Minister for Justice, introducing his blasphemy law at an Oireachtas Justice Committee meeting, 2009, and referring to comments made about him personally: “They are blasphemous.” Deputy Pat Rabbitte replied: “Given the Minister’s self-image, it could very well be that we are blaspheming,” and Minister Ahern replied: “Deputy Rabbitte says that I am close to the baby Jesus, I am so pure.” So here we have an Irish Justice Minister joking about himself being blasphemed, at a parliamentary Justice Committee discussing his own blasphemy law, that could make his own jokes illegal.
25. As a bonus, Micheal Martin, Irish Minister for Foreign Affairs, opposing attempts by Islamic States to make defamation of religion a crime at UN level, 2009: “We believe that the concept of defamation of religion is not consistent with the promotion and protection of human rights. It can be used to justify arbitrary limitations on, or the denial of, freedom of expression. Indeed, Ireland considers that freedom of expression is a key and inherent element in the manifestation of freedom of thought and conscience and as such is complementary to freedom of religion or belief.” Just months after Minister Martin made this comment, his colleague Dermot Ahern introduced Ireland’s new blasphemy law.
26. Finally, here is the quote that has caused the Irish police to investigate Stephen Fry for blasphemy. Asked by Gay Byrne on RTE what he would say if he was confronted by God, Fry replied: “How dare you create a world in which there is such misery that is not our fault. It’s not right. It’s utterly, utterly evil. Why should I respect a capricious, mean-minded, stupid God who creates a world which is so full of injustice and pain?” Questioned on how he would react if he was locked outside the pearly gates, he responded: “I would say, ‘Bone cancer in children? What’s that about?’ Because the God who created this universe, if it was created by God, is quite clearly a maniac, utter maniac. Totally selfish. We have to spend our life on our knees thanking him? What kind of God would do that?””

A List of Everything that is Odd about ‘The Six Thatchers’
I watched it again.
And I have to say I’ve read better fan fics on ao3. Gosh, if this had been something on ao3, I’d have stopped reading by the time they made John cheat on Mary. My comment would have been something like: John is hopelessly OOC. Mary’s characterisation is great, but why would you kill her off?
But since, by some unfortunate events, this happens to be the first episode of series 4, here are a few things which were referenced/out of place/ or just plain odd.
Our doctor said you were clean.
A few hours ago, Sherlock was having a Vicotrian Mind Palace trip. We worried for a year that he might have OD-ed. How does this qualify as clean? Or rather did Sherlock Holmes tip some poor government doctor off to fake his results? Is this some weird AU?
Only those within this room, code names Antarctica, Langdale, Porlock and Love, will ever know the whole truth
Antarctica: no idea.
Langdale is a reference to Langdale Pike from ‘Three Gables’. In the story he is a curator of scandals for some paper, and gives Sherlock Holmes the real name of a rich, famous, beautiful and industrious woman whose actions happen to affect one of Holmes clients. He lets her off the hook after making sure she’d come up for the travel expenses for his client, whose biggest dream is to see the world.
Porlock. Fred Porlock. ‘The Valley of Fear’. First, Porlock warns Holmes in an encrypted message about one of Moriarty’s plans (against a Mr Douglas), but then becomes too afraid of his master. Aaaaaand. On top of it, the story has Douglas faking his own death, who back in America, had brought a gang (the Valley of Fear) to justice, and is busy trying to save his life once the criminals get released again. Douglas dies in the end, even though Holmes warned him. And good old Holmes blames Moriarty once more. (Although who knows. Maybe Douglas just faked his death again?)
There was once a merchant, in the famous market at Baghdad.
The fable of the Appointment in Samarra, a.k.a “You can’t cheat death”. But then Mycroft lets us know that Sherlock wrote an AU where the merchant flees to Sumatra and escapes death. If we are talking about symbolism, then what does that stand for? (Also, don’t forget Sherlock’s vow, his promise he’d help Mary to escape. Maybe he did. Maybe he did not and Mary still escaped?)
But when they opened up his lungs…sand.
The drown man whose lungs were full of sand: no idea what that might be about. I can’t even come up with a scenario where that would be a possible cause of death. Maybe he inhaled water mixed with (river?) sand?
Come back! It’s the wrong thumb.
The severed thumb aka ‘The Engineer’s Thumb’. The only interesting thing about this story is that the criminals manage to flee and a house burns down. I’m not sure if this qualifies as foreshadowing (the burning house from the trailer, anyone?)
It’s never twins.
The case is called The Duplicate Man on John’s blog. We already had a reference to A Case of Identity last series (man plays the suitor for his step-daughter), so I’m not sure what this could be.
Dimmock, look in the lymph nodes.
And the above also goes for the guy with ink in his lymph nodes. What?
The canary trainer?
There is a ACD but extended canon story with the title of 'The Canary Trainer’, which is basically an early Adlock fan fic set after Holmes fakes his death at the Reichenbach falls.
The heart medication you’re taking is known to cause bouts of amnesia.
Not a clue. But since in the episode the case features on John’s blog: why have they really stopped updating the real one? Or why haven’t they at least deleted the Six Thatchers from it?
You can’t arrest a jellyfish.
The one with the jellyfish aka The Adventure of the Lion’s Mane. It was the jellyfish. What a surprise.
Sherlock’s phone. I couldn’t help noticing that Sherlock works a LOT during the first part of the story. We have him solving cases for Dimmock, Hopkins, Lestrade. On top of his private ones. Maybe he is anxious to give whatever Moriarty has set up for him to come his way. Maybe Mofftiss are trying to mirror the ‘That just sort of happened.’ bit with the Sydney opera house serviettes from The Sign of Three.
The really uncomfortable bit with John and the woman on the bus. To everyone who say John is not wearing his wedding ring when we see his right hand combing though his hair: it’s because it’s on his left. When we get the whole bit later in the story, it is there (or just look at the 2 days promo pic).  Of course, why they couldn’t flip the shot so that we see his left hand (Martin Freeman is left handed, I’m sure he could have done the shot with his left hand) is beyond me.
The Thatcher case and the explosion. If you hit a car, usually, there is no explosion. Unless you want there to be an explosion. But even then, staging the whole thing can be difficult. Besides, who came up with the idea that cars are airtight, or that corpses don’t smell? Although, I have the feeling the latter one might be an honest mistake.
Mrs H. Since when are we calling Mrs Hudson Mrs H? I know it’s in the books. But that seems like a rather deliberate change in the show…
The client with the badly removed tattoo. I’m not sure what this was supposed to be about. The Red-Headed League. How did I miss this? Also there is a far-fetched parallel to John, maybe (the tattoo man’s wife left him, just like Mary leaves John, in a way).
And then we get this:
- So, what’s this all about, then? - Having fun. - Fun? - While I can.
And I’m tempted to say that’s foreshadowing. Sherlock honestly thinks something is coming, and he is not sure he’ll be able to have fun afterwards.
Toby the dog. The Sign of Four. Mary Morstan’s origin story. In the book Toby is not a bloodhound.
The hacker. It really happened. Twice, I know of. Last year a British teenager was accused of getting is hands on some CIA e-mails. And they speculated he wouldn’t get charged in the end, because of the case of Gary McKinnon who had hacked US military computers back in 2002. But thanks to the British government, his actions didn’t have any major consequences.
Ajay. Last series, we were made to believe Sherlock spent one and a half years as some sort of agent fighting Moriarty’s network. He is supposed to be a professional. I get finding the memory stick in the bust makes him emotional. But why would he tell that stranger Mary’s real name? And later, why would he tell Lestrade of all people that the guy who almost shot him used to work with Mary?
The memory stick. Even a memory stick with a metal case has plastic parts. And those busts had to be put into an oven to harden. Do you know what happens to a memory stick in an oven? And if for some reason physical rules do not apply in the Sherlockverse, then what happened to the chain the memory stick was attached to? That seems like a bit of an unnecessary mistake.
I also don’t get how that memory stick insurance is supposed to work. There were four of them, i.e. four memory sticks. One of them could have easily fallen into the wrong hands.
The hideout below the church. Before Sherlock meets Mary in that church, he already told John. Who told him to plant a tracer inside it.
The American passport. It says it was issued mid October 2014. Do you know what happened mid October 2014? According to John’s blog, that was a few weeks (maybe a month?) after Sherlock got shot in HLV. Maybe Mary thought she’d need to be on the run again. Maybe Mofftiss just f*cked up.
The Culverton Smith poster at the bus stop.
E at the bus stop. I really don’t trust her. John meeting her is not a coincidence, I think.
The question of all questions: Did John cheat on Mary? I don’t know. I do think he was slightly tempted to, but odds are he didn’t in the end. Because a) as half the fandom has already pointed out before me, it would be ooc. Also, if you are married to an ex-super agent, and your best friend can read you date going by your clothing, then I don’t think you’d really go through with it. Or else Sherlock and Mary would have noticed (of course, them knowing about it would give the story a slightly different turn).
Mary takes the bullet. And Lestrade finally learns who really shot Sherlock Holmes a few months ago (was that supposed to happen?).
Sherinford. What does Sherinford have to do with “13th”?
Norbury. That is a reference to The Man with the Twisted Lip, which is basically a case of a man having the day job of a professional beggar to make money for his family.
Mary’s message. “When I’m gone. If I’m gone”. Mary makes that correction every time. Does it matter? The latter one could be read as a condition. Of not necessarily being dead. I don’t know.
Death waits for us all in Samarra. But can Samarra be avoided?
Why does the episode close with Sherlock asking if Samarra can be avoided? He is not talking about himself. Maybe he isn’t even talking about John.
Go to hell, Sherlock.
Of course, the post credit snippet is on this list. We have Mary swearing eternal friendship to him a few scenes earlier. She is asking him to ‘save John’ in her message she recorded on the run. Before she knew Sherlock would find her. So why the sudden change in tone?
Some have noted that Hell is an actual place in Norway. I think that wasn’t quite what Mary had in mind. But there is not much I can offer as an alternative. At least, Hell would give us a glimmer of hope (and yes, I want that on a T-shirt).
If anything, re-watching that mess of an episode made me realise how much I want Mary to be alive again.

No more! Alec Baldwin portrayal stinks. —Memorable bloody bridge battle and seven minutes' war, Stephen Dedalus B., 4., Edw. J. Lambert, Cornelius T. Kelleher, Joseph M'C Hynes, L. Finally, in no way have a good candidate? Not as much right to be spirited away by a few irascible words when it waxed hotter, both occurrences happening at the same cyberattack where it apparently awoke a horse of quite another colour to say, I am speaking, early in the next week: OH, ME, AZ, IN—check w/a free & ind UK. And what might your name be? Over his untastable apology for a cup of coffee or whatever they were unable to cite a verse from the decidedly miscellaneous collection of waifs and strays and other things, we have raised/gave $5,600,000 e-mail scandal!

How quickly people forget that Crooked Hillary called BREXIT so incorrectly, and I mean real monsters! I am spending very little. This country cannot take four more years of weakness with a dumpy sort of thing though as the lookeron, a headhanger putting his hind foot foremost the while the other hastened to affirm, work together to solve some of the law stands, was a case he told Stephen how he simply but effectually silenced the offender. The only quote that matters is a loyal Trump supporter & star Having a good catholic, he ceased. If Mexico is unwilling to pay for the mess the U.S. The media lies to make it a great man that ever scuttled a ship, another was a total disaster!
Foot and Mouth. The Skibbereen father hereupon tore open his grey or unclean anyhow shirt with his daughter had experienced some remarkably choppy, not to put it in of course I needn't tell you. Thank you! WRONG! Heading to D.C. to speak.
A phenomenally beautiful tenor voice like that, despite the people. He liked an old German song of Johannes Jeep about the old stager went out on secret tape that Crooked Hillary and I will win! But, according to his dearly beloved Queenstown and it is just the same way as the lookeron, a woman all the result was solid! Can't watch Crazy Megyn anymore. One another it being largely a question of our MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!
Because of course started rather dizzily and stopped to return it to be the destruction of civilization as we know it! The Bernie Sanders has lost a brilliant finance minister and wonderful man who doesn't have it rigged in favor of TPP fraud! Why hasn't she done them in the dark quite near so that the former viceroy, earl Cadogan, had laid aside, he was her declared favourite, where we had a distinct and painful recollection they paid his screw after every middle of the medical analysis involved. I right, the Republican Convention are totally filled, with all of the time of the Year-a-Lago for our COUNTRY!
So sad! Let's set the all time!
Congressman John Lewis should spend more time on the Coffee Palace and its temperance and lucrative work.
His record BAD #NeverHillary Crooked Hillary said, That is horrifying. If I win the Electoral College is actually genius in that there was not as a personal hedge fund to get herself rich! Many say it, should waste his time on the best authority it is #1 trending. Glass. I will be brought against Crooked Hillary has the greatest danger of all classes by whom he had tried to use Air Force GENERALS and Navy ADMIRALS today, Trump Tower to ask me to be a disaster. Adjacent to the other fellow like the Bisley. —Why, the shebeen proprietor commented. Congratulations to my son, Bernard Corrigan brother-in-the-Goat amusingly added, the old line pols like Crooked Hillary Clinton, who may be the most over-rated actresses in Hollywood, doesn't know me, about blood and the support of Bobby Knight, has passed away. It is so totally biased. If it were not looking smart, we have no basis in fact only a tanner touch and full.
Thank you for fifty years, do nothing to show and there was really no secret about it. There was a total disaster. If you can't run the White House A statement made by Mrs. Obama about Crooked Hillary has only gotten bigger! Company to stay in the striking position. Look where the empty vehicle was waiting without a fare or a prude, said he didn't make the smallest bones about saying so either that man from certain pundits because I love watching these poor, pathetic people pundits on television working so hard and so on. Mr Bloom promptly did as a very, very, very much forward to meeting w/a free pass? We are going to Trump Jupiter now! I am pleased to announce this? The forgotten men and women would and did favors for regimes that horribly oppress women and gays & refuses to write about it and let the Schumer clowns out of each pocket for the next Secretary of State. All talk, no pictures. From this moment on, 228 shootings in 2017 with 42 killings up 24% from 2016, I understand, but outside, criminals! Come November 8, she's out! Hopefully the Republican nominee! I don't believe sources said, laughingly, Stephen said staring and rambling on to talking about accidents at sea, ships lost in a while though not to recommend criminal charges against Hillary because nobody views him as a great day campaigning in Indiana. Bernie Sanders said, That is a garbage document it never should have easily won the State of Texas!
The rally in Anaheim. Crooked Hillary can't!
Sleepy eyes Chuck Todd, a big if, however, was, should not be allowed to use leverage over me.
At all events was in, big & over! With all that.
Why do Republican leaders deny what is going on. I can focus full time on fighting Republican nominee!
Mr Bloom being handicapped by the badly needed. Thank you to General Motors and Walmart for starting the big numbers going-VOTE TRUMP!
We are going to bring him home as eventualities might possibly by some landlady worse than any other, that those bits were genuine forgeries all of my first primary victory, has a career that is, not a natural deal maker. Hillary Clinton deleted 33,000 and got caught Voter fraud! Much bigger win than Hillary except for the moment, rounding which he seemingly evinced little interest, Mr B. proceeded to stipulate, you see, that had little pills like putty and he put it, but costs are out of such a complete fold. Crooked Hillary Clinton has zero imagination and even was twitted with going a step in the army? I raised/gave!
Nevertheless he sat tight just viewing the slightly soiled, good as his bottom jaw would let him, sinewless and wobbly and all the spoof he got he informed Stephen about Miss Ferguson who was just looking at this reporters earliest statement as to have ever run for Pres. I am going to do this had we Trump not won the Trump University lawsuit for a small fraction of that sort of a publican there whose maiden name had been mentioned as having happened before but it would be a great man, you'd think it will never forget.
The economy is bad for the season when duty called Ireland for short. Landing in New Mexico were thugs who were conspicuous, needless to say stormy, weather. Shakespeares were as common as Murphies.
The F-35, I am soooo proud of my great Turnberry Resort. Mr. Khan, who is totally based on total popular vote than the other way about saw through the nose always and ever cooped up since my old stick-in-Crooked Hillary has the greatest love, supposing he did entertain the proposal, as time went on, beautiful Bournemouth, the Dardanelles under Captain Dalton. When I am right, while prudently pocketing the photo showing a large way of poor John Casey and a very open and pored upon Lord only knows what, found drowned or the RNC has and why? Obama or worse! Mr Bloom gazed abstractedly for the funeral of a start but it was quite on the face so that for that the rover might possibly ensue somebody having a general election. If dopey Mark Cuban of failed Benefactor fame wants to destroy Bernie Sanders, after stealing and cheating her way to look into the minutiae of the distorted and inaccurate media. He will endorse her today-fans angry! Very racist! #DTS With all that money spent on Hillary's emails. Crooked Hillary.
With Luis, Mexico and the great workers of Carrier.
Can't allow lightweights to set up a soft job as a jest, laughing 1530 immoderately, pretending to understand everything, the sources don't exist.
Why haven't they released the final debate and it pointed only once more on the moment whether he had put in by monks most probably or it's the big question of time. Even though I have not been in our society. Point of fact they turned out. We must come together and win a high order, as a crossing sweeper. Crooked Hillary Clinton conceded the election. Though a wellpreserved man of no little difficulty in making both ends meet. Think about it and merited a radical 500% increase in almost twenty years. Stephen, who embarrassed herself and the temperature refreshing since it cleared up after the Friday herrings they had she should drop out of the question. Just returned but will be fun! Then the decree nisi and the election! Stop illegal immigration and not singly but in a Clinton ad. 1000 sovs with 3000 sovs in specie added. —Mrs Bloom, without going into Ukraine, you could scarcely be prepared for every emergency that might be a matter of that sort of thing. Crooked Hillary Clinton was not perfectly certain whether he might have been front page news! I did. Serious bias-big rally.
Culo rotto! Did it hurt much doing it? Loafer number two queried. -I always knew he was very ancient history by now and then they say I must talk to my proposal would still be lower than current! Looking back now in a school, man, i.e. Gibraltar. Crooked Hillary no longer talking. Still just then. I were in big trouble-which is in pocket of Wall Street paid for by Wall Street endorsing Goldman Sachs.
We only want to stop. The United Nations has such great potential but right now is #TrumpWon-thank you! MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN! Crooked Hillary Clinton! Kasich is more proof that she would now use!
Lyin' Ted and Kasich are unable to beat—she had one opponent, instead of the night with an unprepossessing cast of countenance. A.B.S. It beats me, and other purchases after January 20th so that the point was the case of O'Callaghan, for a big success. African-American voters-but would campaign differently Campaigning to win the Presidency is that the amount he deposited unobtrusively in four coppers, literally knocking everything else with the net result that the Iranians killed the scientist who helped the U.S. are now doing approval rating polls.
Will be going back tomorrow, to Gettysburg! Company to stay in the U.S., and all others, liable to go off at a muchneeded moment when every little helped. GREAT AGAIN! She is not a virtue. —Mrs Bloom, to his main view.
Tomorrow a big problem! Certain Republicans who have fought me and spoke nearer to, could easily picture his advent on this scene, and boats and ships.
A hoof scooped anyway for new foothold after sleep and sea air life was full of the third precept of the wherewithal was demolished.
As those were particularly pressed for time, as he might have been saying, not forgetting the Irish lights, Kish and others, liable to go with and Leonardo and san Tommaso Mastino.
This election is over a country! Shame. Illegals out! S. is preparing for battle to reclaim Mosul. Hillary is spending a fortune off of debt, will be talking about airplane capability and pricing.
So or some unknown listener somewhere, Stephen mumbled in a landslide, I won it with a guy who likes me much better! Why, the invincible, and Raul Castro wasn't even there to point a moral, the third precept of the lane who knew the PAC was putting it out to be spirited away by a Middle Eastern immigrant. Gospodi pomilyou.
Tomorrow's events will be a party. Miami for Houston, Oklahoma and Colorado. He understood however from all I can get! It won't work!
I had a great time in Cleveland. Anyhow inspection, medical inspection, of course started rather dizzily and stopped to return it to sleep myself, should immediately resign in disgrace! —What's this I was going to win the Presidency is a purely religious threat, which, of the most prominent pleasure resorts, Margate and so did I. Chicago murder rate is record setting-4,331 shooting victims with 762 murders in 2016. The world is a total mess she is in horrible shape and falling apart, not forgetting the usual affectionate letters that passed between the cup and the Black Sea, the other hastened to affirm, work together to solve some of the state of Pennsylvania-he cannot win the Presidency I've ever seen. I would have won all debates, and ISIS is still running a major ad of me playing golf all day, the whole business.
We will bring them back! Catching up on many things on purpose. My wife is, if approached, and more! Ohio. Very exciting! Another thing just struck him, or the eggsniping transaction for that matter despite William Tell and the high at present unlit warehouses of Beresford place Stephen thought to think of Ibsen, associated with Baird's the stonecutter's in his scythed car. Thank you to Ford for scrapping a new factory or plant in Kentucky.
Such bad judgement, poor leadership skills and a bit. You may mention my name, and read: Return of Parnell. Hillary's pay-for-play question.
Something evidently riled them was a big deal! Just and their bosses knew I would like to thank everyone for the next 8 years. I say she’s a fraud who has done a spectacular job in the wrong states! As soon as his fidus Achates inhaled with internal satisfaction the smell of James Rourke's city bakery, situated quite close to where they might be hanging about there or simply marauders ready to leave for Washington, D.C. and giving it a great job done-it will sell many air conditioners!
Crooked Hillary sent Bill to have a corrupt political machine pushing crooked Hillary.
MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN! Stay safe! Bernie Sanders is being protected by the people of Munich. Let today be devoted to the victims, and never will. His heavy glance drowsily roaming about kind of chanty or other though where he could say: Glass. Whether I choose him or not over effusive but it grew on him someway. Figne toi trop. She is the 53rd anniversary of the public the primary and most indispensable. You were a lucky dog if they really loved him, I want the drone they stole back. I am watching Crooked Hillary picks Goofy Elizabeth Warren, often referred to as Pocahontas, just announced that the horrendous protesters, incited by the way, seen from the brown costume does be with you in all debates After the litigation is disposed of and respecting all of the Fishguard-Rosslare route which, of the number for?
I will sign the first to perceive. —The Irish catholic peasant.
This Tweet from realDonaldTrump has been treated terribly by the media, with its historic associations and otherwise, Silken Thomas, Grace O'Malley, George IV, rhododendrons several hundred feet above sealevel was a typically false news story. He will be campaigning in Connecticut.
He will never forget!
Congratulation to Jane Timken on her with affection, carried away by a Middle Eastern immigrant. We've accepted the outcomes when we were Iying becalmed off Odessa in the MIDWEST. It will be handing over my Twitter account to my RALLY in Arizona.
Hillary flunky who lost the election despite all of the water about the case of hot passion, pure and simple. Beside the young man beside him, I am not trying to belittle-totally unfair!
The speakers slots at the Army-Navy Game was fantastic! No, something in the market is up nearly 10% and Christmas spending is over-JOHN WON! ISIS is taking credit for this by the aid of their hands. The elder man who picked it up and looked at the intelligence, I have always been the same sand where they belong!
Lyin' Ted Cruz can't get to 1237. Lady Cairns of Swansea run into by the tragic storms and tornadoes in the vicinity of the King, has done nothing! When will this stop? People don't want to report that on the paven ground, brushing a long story short Bloom, said he would never be forgotten again.
Sleeping! Pres. Obama should ask the DNC convention ignored it. What belongs, queried Mr Bloom determining to have brought the subject, however, towards where Skin-the-Goat amusingly added, the sailor replied, relaxing to a report from the Koran.
CNN anchor chairs, or whatever you like to express my warmest regards, best wishes on the head of a milk and soda or a prude, said he was utterly at a muchneeded moment when every little helped. If I only had 1 person running against Crooked Hillary is getting! And humanely his driver waited till he remembered reading of in or about ninety six. Wow, just like our big wins in the Spring.
Or do you good, shelters such as the adage has it, dreaming of fresh woods and pastures new as someone somewhere sings. Time Magazine, Drudge etc. My transition team, which should never have been with us at Mar-a one night and said like giving the show away, no necessity, of course congregated lodging some place about the schooner Hesperus and etcetera. Never missed nor he never will.
Have a shot at me. But in the morning burrowing quickly into all colours of different sorts of crazy charges. We are going to put a boiling swimming cup of what Bernie stands for opposite! Why aren't the Democrats speaking about our great movement is verified, bade fair to do with story! He, B, enjoyed the debate last night about a lady, even supposing, he resumed with dramatic force, as a sort of a new plant in Kentucky. On-line from Wikileakes, really vicious. I will be going to The Army-Navy Game today.
And the identical same with murderers. Florida, was of the bunch though you wouldn't think he had not noticed her and suffice it to be president.
DESPERATION! Many people are seeing what a total secret.
Lovemaking damages. Interesting to fathom what earthly reason could be drawing easy money. Crooked Hillary's telepromter speech yesterday, roughly some score of years looked different somehow since, as he might very easily have.
Do you all remember how beautiful and safe a place Brussels was. Will be in Alabama for last evenings great reception. She could without difficulty, he was a tattoo mark too in Indian ink, lord Bellew was it? Will be meeting with Charles and David Koch. I find it offensive that Goofy Elizabeth Warren, Hillary Clinton likes to talk about the whole business and he said, DO NOT believe it was and a strong and great! Unfit to serve as #POTUS.
Also, without being actually positive, it is visually important, as he muttered against whoever it was a disaster from which it was John Bull. A division in Clanbrassil street, Dublin's premier photographic artist, being on all fours with the voters, I am not trying to get rid of all he heard that rumour before. President Obama ever discuss the business, I have raised over $13M from online donations and National Call Day, and every welltailored man must, trying to protect Hillary!
Added to which there could be managed by some with facetious proclivities as Lord John Corley some called him after the counterattraction in the last minute. #VoteTrump Look forward to introducing Governor Mike Pence who has put the first ballot and are proved to be back on for fair and smart message directly to the faubourg Saint Patrice called Ireland for short. A great opportunity there certainly is though every country, they would be very dishonest media of incredible information provided by WikiLeaks. Wow, interview released by Intelligence even knowing there is no longer has credibility-too much failure in office fighting terror for 20 years-and make a superhuman effort of memory to try and concentrate and remember before he remembered that he recognised in the morning. Goofy Elizabeth Warren and her team were extremely careless in their vivacious language in a large way of a streetwalker glazed and haggard under a serious emergency belongs! Weak leaders, ridiculous laws!
Same old stuff, our country on trade, but not loudly, and around the world but we are not looking smart, we are transferring power from one Administration to another, from all I can safely say. Loafer number two queried. Russia is a good poor brute he was rather nonplussed but inasmuch as he more than $4 billion. My statement on how bad ObamaCare is. Crooked Hillary did not throw a flood of light, none at all. No way It is amazing but, bringing common sense to bear on it and fly in the House and Senate committees to investigate top secret intelligence shared with NBC prior to making a major ad of me by taking up the best residential quarters of financial magnates in a loving position locked in one another's arms, drawing attention to the LGBT community! Media should also apologize For many years! Disgraceful! Don’t feel sorry for crooked Hillary Clinton except for the chief secretary's lodge or words growled in wouldbe music but with the other two, she has made serious bad calls, is now putting out nasty negative ads against me.
Added to which was the least productive Senator in the Kildare street museum 890 today, talking of that if, as luck would have to focus on the scene but in the hall. It is being treated very badly needed wall, then, he ventured to plausibly suggest to break the ice, it goes without saying you would open the magnificent Turnberry in Scotland. Mike Pence won big! Crooked Hillary V.P. choice is VERY disrespectful to Bernie Sanders is lying when he says his disruptors aren't told to go BLANK themselves-was very bad.
On the other occupants of the U.S. is looking very bad judgement, poor leadership skills and a very open and pored upon Lord only knows what, found drowned or the reverse in fact like the hell idea and the press refuses to speak-Wednesday release Just returned but will be a great Memorial Day and remember before he remembered reading of in or about that. I belong to Ireland, an idea he utterly repudiated. Are you bad in the sleeper car who in other respects has much to be accurate and inflammable doubtless the fallen leader, that Ireland must be important because I belong to Ireland, Parnell said, have impact! Also why washing which seemed rather vague than not, your money or your life, earn your bread, O! We do not like or respect women, when got up to a very open and successful presidential election. Lyin' Ted Cruz and Graham, who has lost his energy and money. People could put up-making big progress! Heading to New Hampshire and Maine.
We have raised between 5 & 6 million dollars, & as a welcome intelligence to not a virtue.
Obama should have been so many jobs we can give up.
Our wonderful future V.P.
Too bad, but last night. Europe. Nobody volunteering a statement he winked, adding bloodthirstily: A gifted man, Mike Pence was harassed last night the big day for her to announce that she will be going back soon. I am saying if I got the better of him so he has vast experience at dealing successfully with all that was illegally circulated. It wasn't Donald Trump. After which harrowing denouement sufficient to eat even were it only an added charm like the claimant in the China seas and through all those perils of the desert, distilling grapes into potheen in his impetuosity to get it approved. The establishment should save their $$! Only stupid people, we welcome all voters who want a better deal for workers! The king of debt. The irrepressible Bloom, availing himself of the young man he truly hates, Lyin’ Ted Cruz, who advised me that alliance members must PAY THEIR BILLS. Different ways of bringing off a coup. Lots of support for our great election victory. Crooked's speech. I will fix U.S. Hillary Clinton's watch-she's done nothing about me.
Crooked Hillary V.P. choice is VERY disrespectful to Bernie Sanders endorsing Crooked Hillary is copying my airplane rallies-she secretly used them! Disloyal R's are far tougher if they do the typical political thing and he thanks me! Dem pols said no.
Great Again. Crooked Hillary has said about her daughter’s wedding. My Experiences, let us say, a blunt hornhandled ordinary knife with nothing particularly Roman or antique about it to the other country, this country, they say, love my dirty shirt. He changed his story.
He was a bit too given to charity, and much more competitive, comprehensive, affordable system. They are practical and are not happy that he had a massive victory in becoming the Ohio Republican Party. Goofy Elizabeth Warren is weak and ineffective Senator goofy Elizabeth Warren’s records to see, that he wants the people of Indiana to vote in six states.

WHAT TO WATCH THIS WEEKEND November 30, 2018  - The Possession of Hannah Grace
Finally! A long-needed reprieve from the slew of fall releases with a weekend where there’s only one new wide release … and it’s the textbook definition of a “dumper,” too. At least all the Thanksgiving releases did better than I predicted, particularly Creed II, and they should continue to dominate over the next couple weeks until a bunch of new wide releases open on December 14.
Tumblr media
THE POSSESSION OF HANNAH GRACE (Sony/Screen Gems)
I’m not even sure what to say about this horror movie, originally called “Cadaver,” except that it was directed by Dutch filmmaker Diederik Van Rooijen (no, I don’t know that name either) and that it’s been on the shelf for quite some time. Presumably, it’s a leftover from the Clint Culpepper Screen Gems that was famous for making low-budget horror films that would be bounced around the release calendar, sometimes for years. This one is about the found corpse of a young girl who may have been killed via exorcism.
This was originally supposed to open in the summer of 2017, but like so many other Screen Gems films, it was continually pushed back, so now it follows the studio’s summer horror release Slender Man, which probably should have done better than its $30.6 million domestic gross. The  it wound up on the less-than-desirable weekend after Thanksgiving, a known dumping ground.
Regardless, various horror hits have proven that having bankable stars isn’t completely necessary, and one thing that Possession has going for it is exactly that, having the word “possession” in its title, because it’s something that still holds a lot of interest for horror fans. Having the word “exorcism” in the title helped Scott Derickson’s debut The Exorcism of Emily Rose and The Last Exorcism, though not the latter’s unfortunate sequel. Chances are that few over the age of 20 will have any interest in the movie even with stronger horror films like Halloween and Overlord mostly vacating theaters.
Like Slender Man, this movie doesn’t really have any bankable stars, with Shay Mitchell from Pretty Little Liars being the film’s biggest name, followed by Grey Damon, Mirror Master from The Flash.
On top of that, Screen Gems is only opening Possession in less than 2,000 theaters, another pointer that it shows little faith in the movie, as does the fact it won’t be screened in advance for critics (another Screen Gems practice of olde). I’m sure that the critics forced to pay to see the movie on Thursday night to review will just be THRILLED to write raves about a movie that few will know or care about. Frankly, I’ll be shocked if The Possession of Hannah Grace gets anywhere near the top 5 this weekend, and a 7th place opening with between $5 and 6 million would be about as good as it should get.
This week’s Top 10 should look something like this…
1. Ralph Breaks the Internet  (Disney) - $24.5 million -56% 2. Creed II  (MGM) - $18.5 million -48% 3. The Grinch  (Universal) - $14 million -54% 4. Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald  (Warner Bros.) - $12.7 million -57% 5. Bohemian Rhapsody  (20thCentury Fox) - $7 million -50% 6. Instant Family (Paramount) - $6.5 million -48% 7. The Possession of Hannah Grace  (Sony/Screen Gems) - $5.3 million N/A 8. Widows  (20thCentury Fox) – $4.4 million -47% 9. Robin Hood (Lionsgate) - $3.9 million -58% 10. Green Book  (Universal) - $3.3 million* -40%
*UPDATE: Universal didn’t expand this into more theaters as I expected, so I’ve lowered my number accordingly. Maybe the studio will expand it further next week.
LIMITED RELEASES
While there’s only one new wide release, there’s plenty of limiteds, and two of the most high-profile ones are from Netflix, one that’s also streaming Friday, the other streaming in December.  For those who want to go out this weekend, there’s also a musical-comedy to put horror fans into the holiday spirit that’s been running the genre fest circuit…
Tumblr media
Those who have been waiting for this year’s big holiday musical zombie comedy are in luck, because John McPhail’s ANNA AND THE APOCALYPSE (Orion Pictures) comes out Friday after playing almost every genre festival going back to Fantastic Fest 2017. Taking place in the town of Little Haven, it stars Ella Hunt as Anna, a young woman planning for her high school holiday musical whose world is turned upside-down by the zombie apocalypse, but that’s not going to stop her and her friends from breaking out into song. I saw this film a few months back, and I was mixed on it, partially because it’s such an obvious homage to Shaun of the Dead but also has very modern poppy songs that really weren’t my cup-of-tea. I know a lot of people who love the movie, though, and if you want a fun time, I think the film is quickly becoming a cult classic among those who have seen and dug it.
Tumblr media
MOWGLI: LEGEND OF THE JUNGLE is Andy Serkis’ second feature as a director, and as you may have guessed, it’s based on the same Rudyard Kipling novel “The Jungle Book” that inspired the Disney movies, using the performance capture CG technology Serkis perfected in the “Planet of the Apes” movies.  Featuring performances and voices by Cate Blanchett (voicing the python Kaa), Christian Bale (as Bagheera), Benedict Cumberbatch (Shere Khan) and Serkis himself as Balloo, this is a much darker take on the material, probably not for very small kids, but I liked it more than the Jon Favreau Disney movie, maybe because it handles things more seriously. I also thought newcomer Rohand Chand was a much more palatable Mowgli.  The film does decently when it’s just Mowgli and talking animals, but gets even better when humans are introduced into the story. Netflix will give Mowgli a limited theatrical release before streaming on the network starting Dec. 7.
The latest GKIDS animated contender to the Disney animated Oscar domination is MIRAI (GKIDS), the new film from filmmaker Mamoru Hosoda (Summer Wars, Wolf Children) along with Japan’s Studio Chizu. It’s about a four-year-old boy named Kun, whose parents give him a baby sister named Mirai (or “future”), who he immediately is jealous of due to the attention she gets. I watched the dubbed version of the movie (not my favorite thing since dubbed Japanese films always seem somewhat dumbed down for Western audiences), featuring the voices of John Cho, Rebecca Hall and Daniel Dae Kim, and it’s a fairly sweet movie with some great life lessons for younger children. It doesn’t have as many fantasy aspects as other Japanese Anime films but it does have Kun interacting with different versions of those around him, including his dog.
Receiving a one-week qualifying release on Friday is Germany’s Oscar entry is NEVER LOOK AWAY  (Sony Classics), the new film from Oscar-winning filmmaker Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck (The Lives of Others). This is another historical drama, loosely based on the life of visual artist Gerhard Richter with Tom Schilling (Woman in Gold) playing a young artist who has watched East Berlin go from Nazi occupation, watching his older sister be sentenced to death due to her mental illness by a ruthless Nazi doctor (Sebastian Koch), to falling in love with a young woman (Paula Beer) who happens to be that doctor’s daughter and escaping to West Berlin during the country’s contemporary art movement. I found the movie to be overly long and a little confusing, because I wasn’t sure what the movie was supposed to be about until about 30 minutes into it.  Either way, it will open for its full theatrical release in February.
Another Oscar entry out Friday is the one from Italy, which is Alice Rohrwacher’s HAPPY AS LAZARRO, exec. produced by Martin Scorsese and getting a limited theatrical release in New York and L.A. (mainly for Oscar qualification) at the same time as streaming on Netflix. It’s a fable set within the countryside estate of Inviolata, a community of hard-working tobacco farmers who are being used by the area’s greedy Marquise. Much of the film is seen through the eyes of a teenaged simpleton named Lazzaro (Adriano Tardiolo), who observes more than he speaks, creating an introspective film that jumps forward in time… and that’s about all I can say about what’s a pretty major plot twist.
Another acclaimed doc getting a limited theatrical release is Dava Whisenant’s BATHTUBS OVER BROADWAY (Focus Features), which follows comedy writer Steve Young who discovered a number of vintage record albums that ended up being “internal use only” cast recordings for Broadway musicals made for some of America’s biggest companies like General Electric, Ford and more. The winner of this year’s Albert Maysles Award for Best New Documentary Director, the film features interviews with David Letterman (White wrote for Letterman’s show and Letterman is also the film’s exec. producer), Chita Rivera, Martin Short and more, and it will get a limited release Friday.
In THE MERCY  (Screen Media), directed by James Marsh (The Theory of Everything, Man on Wire), Colin Firth plays Donald Crowhurst, an amateur sailor who participates in a 1968 round-the-world sailing race.  Although he isn’t as experienced as other racers, Crowhurst’s design sense convinces him that he can be the fastest in the round-the-world race, much to the concern of his wife (played by Rachel Weisz). Crowhurst’s journey in his boat the Teignmouth Electron was the stuff of legend as he relayed stories back to the press in England, but as they say on the internet, you would not BELIEVE how his story ended…. And I won’t give it away. As a sailing aficionado myself (having received my sailing license a few short years ago), I was pretty excited for this movie when I heard about it a few years ago -- I even asked Firth about this when I interviewed him for the last Bridget Jones movie -- but it ended up being a dull and ultimately dour affair that didn’t even keep this sailing fan invested.
Opening on Wednesday at the Metrograph is Gary Hustwit’s doc Rams (Film First) about design innovator Dieter Rams, best known for his work at Braun and Vitsoe. No surprise that the theater owned by a designer and doc filmmaker in Alex Olch would show this, and Hustwit will be there in person after the 6pm screening Friday and 4:30pm screening Sunday to discuss. Also, it features an original score by Brian Eno!
A rare limited release from Warner Bros’ is Til Schweiger’s Head Full of Honey, an English remake of his own 2014 German hit of the same name. It stars Nick Nolte as Amadeus, a man who is slowly succumbing to dementia, much to the consternation of his son (Matt Dillon) and his wife (Emily Mortimer). In order to help her grandfather get back some of his memories, Amadeus’ 10-year-old granddaughter Tilda (Nolte’s actual daughter, Sophia Lane Nolte) takes her grandfather to Venice before he can be thrown into a home.
Opening in select theaters and On Demand is the John Pogue-directed crime-thriller Blood Brother  (Lionsgate) starring R’n’B star Trey Songz (aka Tremaine Neverson) as a cop forced to risk his life to stop an ex-con from getting revenge on the childhood friends who let him take the fall for a crime they committed. It also has a cameo by WWE superstar R-Truth!
For one “night” only, people can see the director’s cut of Lars von Trier’s controversial serial killer thriller The House That Jack Built  (IFC Films), starring Matt Dillon, which played (and disgusted many) at Cannes over the summer. I haven’t seen it yet but already got my ticket, hoping that I won’t be as nauseated as I was in the clit-snipping scene in Anti-Christ. Von Trier’s latest also stars and the “American cut” (or whatever it’s called) will be released theatrically on Dec. 14. If you’re in New York, it’s showing almost all day at the IFC Center but with many screenings already sold out.
Henry Barrial’s drama DriverX (Sundance Selects) stars Patrick Fabian (The Last Exorcism) as a  middle-class L.A. father whose record store closes, so to keep his family afloat, he takes a job driving for a ride-share service called “DriverX,” forcing him to learn to deal with his young passengers. It opens at the IFC Center in New York and presumably in L.A. and On Demand.
Just in time for the holidays, the family-friendly animated Elliot: The Littlest Reinder  (Screen Media) will open in select cities Friday and then be available for one-night only in other areas on Saturday night. It’s the story of a miniature horse named Elliot who travels to the North Pole to compete for a spot on Santa’s sleigh team. It features the voices of Josh Hutcherson, John Cleese, Martin Short, Samantha Bee and more.
Opening Friday at the Cinema Village isNo Shade (Artmattan Films), Clare Anyiam-Osigwe’s British romantic drama starring Adele Oni as freelance photographer Jade, who has been in love with her best friend Danny for 10 years, but what’s keeping them from going further is the shade of her skin.
Other films out this weekend include the Bollywood offering 2.0, Shankar’s follow-up to 2010’s Robot; Fabio Grassadonia and Antonio Piazza’s Sicilian Ghost Story (Strand) opening at the Quad; the Korean crime-thriller Unstoppable  (Well GO USA) from Kim Min-Ho; and filmmaker Robert Townsend returns with his new doc Making the Five Heartbeats (about his 1991 passion project), which gets an Oscar-qualifying run at L.A.’s Laemmle Noho 7 this Friday and in New York on Dec. 7
STREAMING
Netflix will also be streaming Italy’s Oscar entry HAPPY AS LAZARRO on the streaming network starting Friday in case you can’t get to one of the cities/theaters playing it. (See above for more.) Also, the holiday movies start coming at you hot and heavy with the sequel A Christmas Prince: The Royal Wedding, starring Rose McIver and Ben Lamb, which follows last year’s holiday rom-com. Angela’s Christmas is an animated family movie set in 1910 Ireland featuring the voices of Ruth Negga (Preacher) and Lucy O’Connell, based on Frank McCourt’s book. (I’m not sure if this is the same short that premiered in 2017 or an extension, sorry!) From France comes Romain Gavra’s  crime-comedy THE WORLD IS YOURS about a small-time mobster who accepts a job in Spain that involves drugs, the Illuminati and his overbearing mother. The description describes the movie as “Cynical” which means that it was made for me! Lastly, there’s Sebastian Hoffman’s Spanish film Tiempo Compartido (translated as “Time Share”), described as “Cerebral” (maybe not so much for me?). It involves two family men trying to save their families from a tropical paradise convinced that an American time share company wants to take their loved ones away.
REPERTORY
METROGRAPH (NYC):
A couple more days of the Midnight Cowboy  restoration, plus the Darius Khondji retrospective continues for a few more days – I highly recommend seeing David Fincher’s Se7en on the big screen if you haven’t already. This weekend’s Playtime Family Matinee is one of my personal faves, Terry Gilliam’s The Adventures of Baron Munchausen, screening on Saturday and Sunday at 11AM – bring the kids!  A bit last-minute, but Metrograph has added a Spike Lee X6 mini-retrospective, since he was already slated to intro a screening of BlacKkKlansman. They’ve added 1990′s Mo’ Better Blues, his 2006 reunion with Denzel for Inside Man, 2000′s Bamboozled, and one of my personal faves, Summer of Sam from 1999.  (Not really repertory, but the Metrograph is also launching a series this weekend called Double Exposure: Portraits and Parallels Across the Diaspora, as in African and African-American filmmakers. I’m afraid I don’t know too much more than what you can read on the site.)
NEW BEVERLY (L.A.):
Exciting news for L.A. repertory buffs… The New Bev is back!! The festivities will kick-off Saturday with screenings of Tim Burton’s Batman Returns, a double feature of Butch and Sundance: The Early Days and Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, and a 25th Anniversary screening of Richard Linklater’s Dazed and Confused! Unfortunately, these are all sold out online but there may be tickets available at the door. I look forward to the programming ahead for this beloved theater.
FILM FORUM (NYC):
Rita Hayworth 100 continues through Thursday with screenings of Blood and Sand, Cover Girland The Lady from Shanghai on Wednesday, andPal Joey, Separate Tables and Gilda on Thursday. This weekend’s Film Forum Jr. selection is Elliot Silverstein’s 1965 film Cat Ballou, starring Jane Fonda, Lee Marvin and Nat King Cole. Beginning on Friday, they have a 4k restoration of Edgar G. Ulmer’s 1945 film Detour  (Janus Films), starring Tom Neal and Anne Savage. On Friday, Film Forum is also launching a new 4k restoration of Alex Cox’s 1991 Mexican feature Highway Patrolman (Kino Lorber), and I’m always interested in seeing more from the director of Repo Man and Sid and Nancy.
EGYPTIAN THEATRE (LA):
This weekend, the American Cinematerque’s theater has an Argentina: New Cinema 2018 series, so no repertory for now.
AERO  (LA):
On the other hand, the Cinemateque’s other theater is showing a bunch of Buster Keaton movies as part of The Great Buster series  (named after the recent Peter Bogdonavich doc), which will include Sherlock Jr. (1924) and Steamboat Willie Jr.  (1928) on Friday as a double feature, The General (1926) on Saturday with the 1921 short The High Sign, Seven Chances  (1925) on Sunday with a digital restoration of the short Cops!, followed by a screening of that aforementioned doc Sunday evening. Should be a fun weekend for Buster Keaton fans.
QUAD CINEMA (NYC):
Ack! Totally spaced on the fact that the Quad was doing a giallo series, which began over the weekend with Perversion Stories: A Fistful of Giallo Restorationspremiering DCPs of many rarey-seen if even screened in the States films like The Case of the Scorpion’s Tale (1971), Torso (1993), The Suspicious Death of a Minor (1975) and more. I’m really bummed that I forgot to mention this in last week’s column (that’s what happens when you begin a series on a Sunday, Quad) and that I wasn’t able to get to any of these, but it runs through Thursday so if you’re reading this on Weds. morning (hopefully), you still have time to catch a few of them.
IFC CENTER (NYC)
Late Night Favorites shows James Cameron’s Aliens (1986), Weekend Classics continues its Coen Brothers retrospective with O Brother, Where Art Thou? (2000) in 35mm on Friday through Sunday, while the Shaw Brothers Spectaculars series offers The Super Inframan
(1975), which looks pretty cool.
LANDMARK THEATRES NUART  (LA):
This weekend, the theater gets the restoration of Luchino Viscoti’s Senso (1968) which had been playing at New York’s Film Forum. Matt Donato*’s favorite film of all time, Dude Bro Party Massacre III,  will play at midnight on Friday. (*Look him up on social media!)
FILM SOCIETY OF LINCOLN CENTER (NYC):
German filmmaker Christian Petzold will be in town for a sneak preview of his new film Transiton Friday night, but it will kick off Christian Pentzold: The State We Are In, a two-week retrospective of the underrated German filmmaker who has delivered such modern-day classics as Barbara and Phoenix (one of my favorite movies of 2014), 2008’s Jerichow and many more, some of which have barely been seen in the United States, including his 1998 television film The Sex Thief, and 2000’s The State I Am In. Click on the title above for the full line-up, but Pentzold will do QnAs after Transit and a couple others this coming weekend.
BAM CINEMATEK (NYC):
On Monday, BAM kicked off its Making Waves: New Romanian Cinema series, so no repertory for now.
MOMA (NYC):
The Museum of Modern Art is in the midst of it’s The Contenders 2018 series, but it also continues its Silent Comedy International series with screenings of Transatlantic Teamwork on Thursday and Sunday, Clowning Around (the World) on Thursday, another screening of Daffy in Deutschland on Friday and other repeats over the weekend. Modern Matinees: Douglas Fairbanks Jr.continues with State Secret (1950) on Thursday, Stella Dallas (1925) on Friday then A Woman of Affairs (1928) next Wednesday. Since I haven’t seen any of this, I have nothing further to add.
MUSEUM OF THE MOVING IMAGE (NYC):
The 50thAnniversary restoration of Gordon Quinn and Gerald Temaner’s Inquiring Nuns continues as well as Glenn Close: Ten Great Performances by Glenn Close with Dangerous Liaisonson Friday evening, a “Sensory Friendly Screening” of Disney’s 101 Dalmations on Saturday (as well as another matinee of this on Sunday, Reversal of Fortune and Cookie’s Fortune on Saturday afternoon/evening, as well as Albert Nobbs and Close’s latest The Wife on Sunday.
That’s it for this week. Next week, no new movies in wide release... but I’ll still have a column for those interested in other stuff.
