Your first initial impressions of any Twst character vs your current feelings about them?

honestly, my perception of pretty much every character went through some metamorphosis of "this guy looks like a jerk" to "oh, he's a stupid jerk? now hold on." it's all about that balancing act between a dark brooding asshole and a dark brooding asshole who is also totally ridiculous, and it really does make ALL the difference.

perhaps most ironically, I've mentioned before that I was absolutely not into the Diasomnias at first, because the impression the website gave pre-release was somehow even less favorable than for everyone else and I was mad at Lilia for getting my hopes up for a token girl). and then we got their stories and, well, I kind of just haven't stopped thinking about them since. 🤷

also, I went in thinking that Crowley was going to be. y'know. competent at his job. a helpful guide. a mysterious yet caring mentor figure, a fitting leader for this band of delicate young magic waifs with their fancy little magic outfits and their perfect, perfect hair. I've never been so glad to be wrong.

Was pondering how Mark’s rigid ass mask/lens is prob a Budget Thing (since squishy, bendy lens are pretty much a mandate for all hero animated series, like JL, BTAS, TNBA, Spider-Man, etc), and then I was slapped with a vision of Mark in a more JL/BTAS-ish style and I had to see it through. I am a genius btw.

It’s not Powder vs Jinx.

It’s past vs present.

When Silco says Jinx needs to “let Powder die” he’s not trying to get Jinx to “kill her inner child” or that he only wants Jinx to be Jinx. Cuz Jinx and Powder are the same person.

He means you need to let the past die. Move on (or at least gaslight yourself into thinking you’ve moved on). So that you can become stronger and more capable from overcoming it. Untether yourself from the past so that you can accept who you are in the present.

So that the past can’t hurt you anymore.

And Jinx’s choice between the Jinx chair and the Powder chair isn’t about her choosing between two split personalities. It’s about her wondering if she can ever go back to the innocent person she used to be. If she can shrug off the present and revert to the past.

But this is of course impossible. She has grown up to become a very damaged person. You can’t just flip a switch and go back to the way you were pre-trauma and pre being raised by a guy who enabled all your self-destructive behaviors.

And Vi cannot enable Jinx the way Silco has. She won’t shoot Caitlyn for Jinx. There’s no way she would have “passed” Jinx’s messed up test. And even if she had, enabling Jinx’s violence would never have brought Powder back. Because Jinx is just who Powder has grown up to be.

Silco is right. Her name is Jinx. She’s not that girl anymore. Vi is still holding out hope that Jinx can revert back to her past innocent self. But things have changed too much. Some things can’t be undone. There’s no way to go back to the way things were. So might as well embrace the present, no matter how tragic and shitty it is.

So here’s to the new us.

Friendly reminder that the suffering and torment Xie Lian experienced actually made him LESS kind, and the lessons he learned as a result of that pain were that human life is meaningless and compassion is worthless and people don't deserve your help or care or love for them. Xie Lian had to backtrack and reject these new lessons in favor of the old ones he had already known in order to return to being kind.

Xie Lian losing everything he loved and knew, being stripped of his power, autonomy, safety, and community, and being ridiculed and humiliated, did not teach him anything worth knowing. He did not learn any valuable or important lessons from it. In fact, he needed to consciously decide that he wasn't going to let it change him and work to go back to the person he was before all that shit happened in order to avoid turning evil.

"I don't enjoy solitude."

I was thinking about this line and I find the context of it really interesting because on the surface it suggests that Echo doesn't like being by himself, which is true, but the conversation wasn't about Echo being alone. Omega was asking him if he wanted to join in with some meditation, and that's when Echo said he doesn't like solitude. It isn't just being by himself physically. It's being left alone with his own thoughts that really gets to him.

And it's so much of why Echo never sits still. He's always with someone or doing something because it's how he escapes being inside his own head. The only time I can think of where Echo is just sat by himself, not actively doing something, is here

And it's not exactly giving "yay fun happy Echo times". It's more "depressed and thinking about all of his dead brothers times."

This is why he's always doing something. Not just to save his brothers but because the one thing Echo can't do is sit still and do nothing. He can't retire, he can't go and live a chill life on Pabu because this man hasn't found a way to temper his own thoughts. He just keeps going and going and going because stopping means confronting what's in his head and he is undoubtedly going to spiral.

And I think that's partly why Hunter is a little hesitant about Echo staying in the Rebellion. It isn't just about the fact that the Empire is too powerful, or that Echo has a chance of being KIA, it's also about the fact that Echo will just run himself into the ground. There's only so long he can keep it up for and one day he's going to hit his limit.

I don't know what the end is for Echo. The only way he's going to kick his feet up and retire is when he actually heals enough to not go into a depressive episode or a panic attack every time he isn't distracted. Yes, Echo is better than he was when he was first rescued, but realistically this man has done almost fuck all actual processing of anything he's gone through.

Because it terrifies him.

And that's so valid. But when everyone in the fandom is trying to work out where he is or what happens to him, I genuinely don't know. I strongly believe he will stay in the fight for as long as he can. But how his story ends? I can't say.

Edit: I want to clarify that I don't think Echo is only in the fight purely as an escape mechanism. I just think it'd definitely a big player in why he never seems to stop.

The Helena diaz of it all has me fascinated. I’ve said for a long while that Eddie’s real issues are his mommy issues and this episode just cemented for me that we’re gonna explore that and deal with it.

Because it’s Helena who forced Eddie to grow up to fast - because her husband wasn’t around much - so she pushed Eddie into de facto parent and husband role ls - selfishly filling her needs and ignoring the damage it was doing to her son (it is a form of abuse in my book).

Eddie then had the audacity to fall in love with and marry Shannon and get her pregnant. It’s why Helena was always so off with Shannon - she was punishing her. She is also punishing Eddie for all of this and his refusal to return to El Paso only cemented further her bitterness and resentment.

Now she does have Ramon back she doesn’t need Eddie any longer to fill that role so she is still punishing him and part of that is tied into her glee over now getting to parent Christopher - something she has always been intent on doing the doppelgänger just gave her the opportunity- as well as allowing her to further punish her son and his love of Shannon.

Her barbed comments about building a pool were all about showing what she can provide Christopher - how she is parenting him better than Eddie - it’s part of her mind games - making Eddie feel like more of a failure as a parent to his son.

The reality of course is that the reverse is true - Helena’s parenting is all superficial, flash and showy - it isn’t the hard day to day parenting when things get tough and you have to be the bad guy. While Eddie has made mistakes, there is nothing superficial, flash, or showy about his parenting. It’s why bucks comments about Eddie being a great dad are so important.

Eddie feel like a failure right now and that he is entirely to blame for everything. But in reality, while he does bear a bit of the responsibility, the truth of the matter is that he needs to learn and deal with the fact that all of it actually stems from Helena and her abuse of her young son - Shannon never stood a chance just like Eddie never has.

can i just say: i've come to terms w/ the fact that the hxh succession war fandom on tumblr is teeny-tiny in comparison to other shonen.... and i'm actually super super okay with it because basically everyone here is so damn cool. we may be few but we are mighty etc. i've had more positive interactions w/ fellow readers in the past few weeks than i've had in literal years of being in other fandoms. y'all are awesome and the engagement is top tier.

and to literally everyone else who is posting succession war stuff, no matter how obscure, know that i love you and you are soosososooo appreciated! makes me smile every time

I was watching Chapter 15: The Believer yesterday and something stood out to me that I guess I'd never really thought about before...

When the Juggernaut is getting attacked by the Pirates, we see several shots of Din struggling without his armour. It's a new way of fighting for him and he struggles to adapt at first.

He quickly rallies and skilfully fights them off, though. But more pirates soon appear and after fighting them off, Din is thrown backwards. He sees several pirates approaching.

Din lies down in defeat, powerless to fight them off without his armour or weapons. Knowing his death is likely imminent, without hope of survival.

Instead of giving up and accepting defeat, he does not allow himself to wallow in despair and mystery. After sighing deeply he steadies himself and gets right back up:

Facing down death as the pirates approach, he does not show weakness or fear.

He doesn't allow himself to be cowardly, or dwell on his likely impending doom and the fact he has failed in his quest to rescue the child he loves so much...

Instead, Din stands there with his fists up, outnumbered and without weapons, prepared to fight to the end even in the face of certain death...

Fortunately, of course, the TIE Fighters appear to save the day and Din succeeds in his quest to rescue Grogu and, well, you know the rest.

But I think this little moment in one of the best episodes is such a good insight into his character.

Standing up with his fists clenched like that, outnumbered and hopeless but refusing to accept defeat is perhaps one of the most Mandalorian things he's ever done. Yet only a few minutes later he removes his helmet and that act leaves him rendered an apostate in the eyes of his people. Told he is a Mandalorian no more, even.

It's kind of heartbreaking because he really did not deserve to be told that. Mandalorians are proud warriors, who never give up. Being a coward is the worst insult in Mando'a, their ancient language. Here, Din showed that he is nothing of the sort.

Din Djarin is as honourable a Mandalorian as they come.

i just thought of something about frostpaw’s design having a wolf motif and her huge autopsy scar - it reminds me of how in multiple fairy tales (particularly ittle red riding hood, like you mentioned in the design post), the wolves in those stories have their stomachs cut open. i just thought that was cool :3

I hadn't even considered that, but it makes it work even better. The fairytales don't even just have the wolf get their belly cut open-- they also get filled with stones and tossed in the river.

There's a clear image in my mind that when Frostpaw is put under the human tranquilizer, her mind falls backward and plunges her into liquid void. A dream takes hold, bubbles forming in the dark, her body cradled by clear water as far as she can perceive.

The unspoken knowledge of her dream tells her that she's in a raindrop, the river, the lake, and Riverstar Himself. The embodiment of water. And He is endless.

Her problems are washed away by the sheer vastness of his being, and she's just beginning to wrap her head around the marvel of it all when she opens her eyes in a den. Warm, comfortable, surrounded by hay.

The vision sloshes in her mind like dancing waves. She has a boiling desire to understand what it meant-- and the only thing that comes to mind is the Tribe of Rushing Water's philosophy that all things are connected by the river. That living by the Lake, fed by the southern delta, which rushes down from the mountain's waterfall, makes their cultures kin.

She decides to start there, and will go further south if need be. Thus begins Book 3 of BB!ASC, The Source of the River.

want to do a properly thought out write up on this but.... Sunday and Aventurine have so many parallels. Sunday the oldest of an orphaned sibling duo who wishes to sacrifice himself (in a sense) for his sister, Aventurine the youngest of an orphaned sibling duo whose sister sacrificed herself for him. The way Aventurine puts his left hand behind his back to stop it from shaking and Sunday who holds his right hand behind his back during particularly intense moments. Both who feel fundamentally alone no matter how many people they surround themselves with, who actively build self-destructive walls to keep themselves from others, who struggle to find a sense of peace and happiness for themselves, who hide every emotion behind a placid smile, who willingly transform themselves into actors within the grand theatre of life.

Where in Beyond Canon is Arquisprite?

Took inspiration from the above post by @pastabaguette and decided to expand upon it due to The Plot Point update as well as some stuff seen even before Vriska’s arc started in The Point.

Let's examine some stuff that may tell us where Arquiusprite is at this time, seeing as we seemingly have only one chapter in The Point left. I think we've got a lead on his whereabouts already.

We've got horses and horse-adjacent creatures.

We've got a robot that looks like it's literally ripped from Equius' hive with a notable missing horn hole and a dent in the head.

There's also this twitter response from James Roach which could be interpreted as suggesting Equius' return in some way at some point in the future.

OP, I'm not saying you're right, but I am saying that if Dirk were to consult anyone on horses, it would probably be a mashup of his AI & Equius. Also Void player behavior apparently! Also Dirk has narrative reality warpy powers & we aren't sure as to the limits of those yet!

Below are some reddit notes about classpects that also lead credence to the idea that Arquisrpite is on Deltritus with Dirk at this time. Outside of the obvious fact that we haven't seen him in The Plot Point or the bonus comics with Jasprosesprite at all as of the Davepetasprite^2 feather chapter release.

Are the robots in case Terezi goes ultimate? Are they backup bodies for Rosebot? A metal body for Arquisprite? Who knows, maybe all three! 🤷‍♀️ Robots are being made by someone though (for some purpose) and they have troll horn slots on their craniums. The exact style robot that Equius used to make back on Alternia; so, make of that what you will!

Also maybe they just need a sprite to kick off whatever makeshift sburb/sgrub copycat they're trying to get running and seeing as Arquiusprite is a splinter of Dirk, it's fitting that he would accompany him. Plus the sprites can kind of just seem to be wherever & whenever the story needs them to be? Seeing as how Jasprose kidnapped Jane in the meat timeline, but in the candy timeline the sprites just kind of seemed to not do much or be absent entirely after a certain point.

There's at least a guaranteed non-zero chance Arquiusprite is on Deltritus.

today's menu, once again: regarding the logistics of hxh duos relationships

so. ging and pariston. paying a little bit of attention to how they interact, we bump into what can be seen as a contradiction, namely their closeness (or lack thereof)

regard:

pariston about ging

his internal monologue seems to imply he is learning/confirming (note the 'do' in 'we do think alike) something for the first time. this isn't the sort of thing you'd expect someone to figure out after having spent a great deal of time together. it sounds a lot like pariston is finding this out as the reader is too, which is peculiar. perhaps the zodiac meetings weren't great for getting to know ging (especially if he's usually absent)

on the other hand, however, ging about pariston...

complicated. note, this translation is unfortunate in that it leaves out a crucial detail (which is that ging is actually referring to pariston as the shortened 'paris') that just furthers this sort of contrasting view they have of their relationship; ging calls him by a nickname, pariston politely and perhaps professionally goes with the distant 'ging-san'. going back to the screenshot, however... this is interesting. if it were just that they were coworkers like any other zodiacs, calling it a complicated history seems a bit much. so what gives?

the type of scenario i can picture is one in which they know of each other a lot longer than they have actually interacted (like a summer friendship, across many years but only ever meet occasionally) which is fascinating. was communication done through netero (who might've enjoyed the idea of these two butting heads -> actually the 'we do think alike' might very likely be a confirmation of something netero himself told pariston), building an image of the other up in their minds. were they constantly throwing a wrench in the others plans without direct contact? potentially, ging and pariston both seem to agree the latter really wanted ging's attention for ages, so was the fact ging is so distant a factor in fueling pariston's strange focus on him? much to ponder.

final sidenote: there might also be a difference in how confident they are of having understood the other. pariston seems to strongly believe in ging's qualities and skills (duh), but be more cautious about making judgements about the man himself too early, meanwhile ging, while having a good grasp on paristons modus operandi...

...might be a bit overconfident...

(also hehe note the smug-fruity pose in ging's mental image of pariston. definitely much to ponder)
