Say Goodbye to Lingering Odors in Your Home
Keeping your home fresh is essential, but sometimes stubborn odors can linger despite your best efforts. Whether it’s your couch, fireplace, carpet, or washing machine, bad smells can make your space less inviting. In this blog, we’ll explore how to effectively remove persistent odors from various parts of your home using natural methods, commercial products, and professional solutions. With these tips, your home will smell fresh and clean in no time!
How to Get Smell Out of Couch
Your couch is one of the most used pieces of furniture in your home, and it can easily trap odors from pets, food spills, and everyday use. Fortunately, there are several ways to freshen it up without much hassle.
Assess the Odor
Before diving into cleaning, assess where the odor is coming from. Pet accidents, food spills, and mildew can all cause different types of smells. Remove cushions and check the crevices for crumbs or stains that could be contributing to the odor.
Natural Methods
One of the best natural remedies is baking soda. Sprinkle it generously on your couch, focusing on the areas with the strongest odors. Leave it for several hours or overnight, then vacuum it up. Baking soda works by absorbing odors, leaving your couch smelling fresh. You can even add essential oils like lavender or peppermint to the baking soda for an extra fresh scent.
Vinegar is another powerful natural deodorizer. Mix equal parts water and white vinegar, lightly mist the solution over the couch, and let it air dry. Be sure not to oversaturate the fabric, as this can cause mold. Test a small hidden area first to make sure the fabric won’t discolor.
Commercial Products
For tougher odors, commercial enzymatic cleaners are effective, especially for pet-related smells. These cleaners break down the proteins in urine, feces, and other organic stains, eliminating the source of the odor rather than just masking it. You can also use odor-neutralizing sprays for quick fixes to keep your couch smelling fresh.
Deep Clean for Stubborn Odors
If the odor persists, it may be time for a deep clean. Steam cleaning is a great way to penetrate the fabric, lifting dirt, and odor-causing particles from deep within the cushions. Always check the care instructions on your couch before using steam.
For more detailed steps on refreshing your couch, read our guide on how to get smell out of couch.
2. How to Get Fireplace Smell Out of House
While a fireplace can make your home feel cozy, it can also leave behind unpleasant smoky odors that are hard to eliminate. Here’s how to neutralize those lingering smells.
Understanding Fireplace Odors
The key culprits of fireplace smells are creosote buildup, moisture in the chimney, and leftover ashes. These can mix together to create an overpowering smoky or musty odor that lingers in your home.
Regular Cleaning and Maintenance
Regular cleaning is the best defense against fireplace smells. After each use, remove the ashes and wood debris from the fireplace. A vacuum designed for ashes or a dustpan and brush will help keep the area clean. It’s also crucial to hire a professional chimney sweep at least once a year to remove creosote buildup and inspect the chimney for any structural issues.
Enhancing Ventilation
Proper ventilation is crucial when using your fireplace. Make sure the damper is functioning correctly and that your chimney is free from blockages. Improving the airflow with an exhaust fan or opening a window while using the fireplace will help reduce smoke buildup indoors.
For more detailed tips on eliminating fireplace odors, check out our guide on how to get fireplace smell out of the house.
3. How to Get Dog Smell Out of Carpet
Dogs are wonderful companions, but they can leave behind strong odors in your carpet. Here’s how to remove dog smells effectively and keep your carpets fresh.
Where Do Dog Smells Come From?
Dog smells often come from oils, dirt, and even urine that gets trapped in the carpet fibers. Carpets can easily absorb these odors, making it difficult to get rid of them without proper cleaning.
DIY Solutions
One of the easiest DIY methods to remove dog smells is by sprinkling baking soda on the carpet. Let it sit for 15 to 30 minutes to absorb the odors, then vacuum it up. For more stubborn smells, mix equal parts white vinegar and water and spray it lightly over the affected area. The vinegar will help neutralize the odor without leaving a lingering smell.
Commercial Products
If DIY solutions don’t fully remove the smell, commercial enzymatic cleaners are designed specifically to break down the bacteria that cause pet odors. These cleaners not only neutralize the smell but also prevent it from returning.
Professional Help
For deeply embedded smells, professional carpet cleaning services can make a significant difference. They use industrial-strength equipment and pet-friendly cleaners to remove tough stains and odors, leaving your carpet smelling fresh and clean.

4. How to Remove Stagnant Water Smell from Washing Machine
A washing machine that smells like stagnant water can make your laundry smell less than fresh. The culprit is often mold, mildew, or detergent residue buildup. Here’s how to eliminate that smell for good.
Step 1: Clean the Drum
Run an empty cycle with two cups of white vinegar on the hottest setting. The vinegar will break down grime and neutralize odors. Afterward, run another cycle with baking soda to further deodorize the machine.
Step 2: Clean the Detergent Drawer and Gasket
Remove the detergent drawer and soak it in warm water with vinegar. Scrub away any residue with an old toothbrush. Similarly, clean the rubber gasket around the door, as this is a common place for mold to grow.
Step 3: Clean the Filter
The filter, usually located at the bottom of the machine, can trap lint, dirt, and water, contributing to the smell. Remove the filter, clean out any debris, and soak it in soapy water before placing it back.
Step 4: Prevent Future Odors
To prevent odors from returning, leave the door open between washes to allow the machine to dry out. Additionally, run a hot water cycle with vinegar every few weeks to keep the machine fresh.
For more detailed instructions, visit our article on how to remove stagnant water smell from washing machine.
Conclusion: Keeping Your Home Odor-Free
Bad odors can significantly impact the comfort of your home, but with regular maintenance and the right cleaning methods, you can keep them at bay. Whether it’s your couch, carpet, fireplace, or washing machine, there are effective solutions to remove odors and prevent them from returning. By incorporating these tips into your routine, you can enjoy a fresh-smelling home all year round.

Chicago Fire Season 5 Ep. 18 "Take a Knee"
Casey finds a new crack house with a female junkie; Dawson and Brett get a new trainee; Severide's father visits.
If you want to watch the series for yourself, stop reading! This post contains spoilers to the storyline.
Anna and Lieutenant Severide are at his home discussing a trip to a cabin. He gets a call from CPD's Sergeant Trudy Platt. Severide picks up his father, Benny, at the precinct. Benny was drunk and got into a fight. they aren't pressing charges, but Trudy says she won't call his son next time.
On the way to the firehouse, Gabby tells her husband Lieutenant Casey, that she has a trainee today. They see a house with people around it. Matt says it's a new crack house.
At the firehouse, Gabby and Sylvie meet their tainee for the day, Harris Thornton. Chief Boden orders the trainee to observe and not give medical advice.
Severide walks in with his father, who sits on the couch to sleep. The alarms go off. Everyone goes to a freezer where a man has been stuck for hours. They can only see his fingers. Severide and Matt give orders to their crews. Gabby takes Harris to get more blankets and fluids. Joe Cruz wants to save the man and his fingers in a different way. Severide agrees to try it. They hopen the freezer and find he has a pulse. Brett says she'll deal with his fingers on the way. Harris seems dazed, but Severide pats Cruz on the back for the good idea.
On the way back, Matt tells Otis to turn the corner. They check out the new neighbours. In front of the house is a locked car with a toddler inside. Matt breaks the window, but the mother comes running out and speeds off. Stella gets a picture of her license plate.
Matt tells Boden about the incident. Boden says he'll give the license plate number to the police. Benny jokes that in the old days, they had different ways of dealing with crack houses. They all laugh.
Cindy Herrmann comes to see her husband, Christopher Herrmann. She tells him their son was suspended for taking a knee instead of pledging allegiance to the flag. Herrmann is furious and tells her to drop him off at the firehouse after she gets him from school. He storms off and the others laugh.
Gabby tells Harris that after every successful run, they get junk food. The second rule is to take the job seriously. Otherwise, he won't last a year. Harris says his family doesn't support him. He wants to be a paramedic because of a bike accident he had when he was 12. The EMTs get another call.
They arrive at a restaurant. Three teens are on the floor, vomiting and in pain. Brett asks where the staff are. Gabby checks if anyone else is there. Harris crawals behind the counter and finds another person. He says the oven cleaner could have caused cyanide poisoning. Harris thinks he's having a heart attack and starts chest compressions. He stops when he thinks he killed him. Gabby says he has a pulse, but is mad at Harris for breaking the man's rib. She asks him which part of "Observe Only!" did he not understand?
After the run, she calls him a kid but says she would have done the same. Detective Alvin Olinsky talks to Matt about the drug house and the woman.
Cindy brings Lee Henry to his father. She says they raised the prices on the vending machines and he can say what he thinks. He can also choose not to pledge allegiance if he doesn't want to. Herrmann says, "He is a Herrmann before he is an American. He tells him what his rights are! Herrmanns don't disrespect things they love, like country, freedom, and history." The firefighters don't know where to go as Herrmann rants to his son.
Benny tells his son that Beth kicked him out months ago. He says Severide is just like him, willing to mess up for a woman. He says he isn't like his father. Benny wants to go to dinner so he can meet her.
Matt tells Gabby about the crack house. He couldn't get the image of the kid in the car seat. She says he did the right thing. Boden has the address. He can pursue it off shift. But Chief Hatcher is there to see Gabby and Brett about their last call.
Hatcher wants to know if Harris did CPR on a patient and broke a rib. If so, he'll be dismissed from the training program. Gabby takes the blame, saying she ordered him to do it. Brett says they both did it because there were multiple victims and it was Harris who figured out it was cyanide poisoning. Chief Boden stands with them. Harris is willing to admit his mistake. Brett and Gabby said one more mark on their file doesn't matter. Gabby says the most important thing is to save lives. They go their separate ways.
Herrmann, Mouch, and Boden are leaving the firehouse. Herrmann says they're meeting with school officials about the protest. Herrmann asks what he'll say. Boden says he should listen more than he speaks. Mouch says he should bring doughnuts. Herrmann and Cindy meet with the VP. He says their apology should be given to the whole school. He says they have a zero-tolerance policy for hate speech. The VP says their son learned this from them at home. Herrmann gets angry and starts ranting about American rights that protect people from bullies like the VP.
Severide tells Anna her father wants to meet her, but warns her she'll be disappointed. She says she has to work late on Friday but plans to learn everything about Kelly Severide. He says that's what he's afraid of.
Matt asks a neighbor if the police have been to the woman's house. Matt rings the bell. A man answers, holding a toddler. The woman rushes to the door, asking if she is dead. Matt looks confused. Matt sits with them as they explain that Chelsea, their 18-year-old daughter, is using drugs again. Her father says he's to blame because he kicked her out. When they called the police, Chelsea was arrested for dealing drugs. The courts don't want to hear she's a victim. The mother says the man controls her daughter. She says his name is Rico or Roho, and he threatened to kill her. The father says they lost their daughter. Matt knows how it feels. The mother wants to talk to her, but can't. They ask him not to call the police. Matt asks for a day.
The firefighters want to know what happened and joke that they will search the woods behind Herrmann's place. Herrmann says Lee Henry is smart. Stella asks if Herrmann heard.
Matt learns the CPD will raid the house in two days. Everyone will be arrested. Matt asks him to stop, but Olinsky says this was planned before Matt called. Matt explains about Chelsea. Olinsky promises to talk to his guy, but Narcotics is ready for the raid. It's hard to stop it.
Harris shows up at his shift, but he's not training with Gabby and Brett anymore. He thanks them for training him, but he's going to be a paramedic no matter what. Brett likes training, but Gabby says she shouldn't poke a bear because it will bite. They should be lucky. Gabby meets Matt in the hallway. He says the police are going to raid the drug house. She learns it's not good because there's a victim inside who could go to jail. He says he'll talk to Boden. She mocks him, saying he'll "Gabby Dawson" this.
Matt tells Boden what he learned from Chelsea's parents. He saw the guy holding her. He's bad news. He says they don't need to "burn anything down," but they're just going to "knock." The firetruck arrives. Matt and Herrmann say they smell smoke inside the house. He kicks in the door and orders everyone out. The dangerous man asks what they're doing with the machete. He holds a machete to Chelsea's throat. He tells the firefighters to leave because there's no fire. Matt says the fire is in the walls and orders them to get it. Otis and Mouch start spraying their fire extinguishers.
He attacks Matt with a machete. Herrmann sprays him with an extinguisher as Matt uses a crowbar to disarm him. They fight, but Matt tells his guys to leave. Chelsea is leaning against the wall as Matt promises to help. She yells that they don't know her. When her parents come in, she cries. Her father says he was wrong to throw her out. Stella says she's been there too. The only difference is her parents weren't alive to help her. Chelsea is surprised her mom came. She promises to hold her the whole time. Chelsea breaks down, saying she just wants to be free. Her parents hold her tight and tell her she is free. Boden says the police can come as soon as they leave.
Gabby learns Chelsea is in Chicago Med detoxing. Stella says her husband was amazing. Gabby says, "What else is new?" Chief Hatcher says Gabby and Brett have to go through retraining next shift. Gabby is angry but says she'll do it if they pay her to sit in a warm classroom.
Herrmann asks Mouch and Boden for a favor, but won't tell them what it is. Boden agrees, and Mouch does too. He takes them to a VFW breakfast to teach his son about rights. He introduces his son's military friends, who were injured in the line of duty. Everyone stands and holds a hand over their hearts as they pledge allegiance to the flag.
Chelsea and her parents meet Dr. Sarah Reese at the hospital. She tells Matt and Stella that she's physically fine but mentally it'll take time. She's optimistic though as she's going to rehab tomorrow. Stella says she's calling Gabby because she's buying drinks. Matt says he's texting everyone else because he's buying drinks.
Dinner with Benny is just what Severide expected. Benny brings Trish as his date. When Anna arrives, Severide is happy to find out she's a pediatric nurse. Anna watches, then leaves. Severide chases her. Severide says he's not Benny. He's always avoided that. She thinks moving to Chicago was a mistake. She feels they're wrong for each other and were idiots not to see it. Her family says she was making a mistake, and she is. She gets in a cab and leaves him standing there.

"The End of Time part 1" thoughts
me trying to recap this would take longer than the actual episode cause so much shit happened but i'll try to give a highlights reel when commentary as appropriate
the narration about how "in the final days of planet earth....everyone had bad dreams" kinda reminds me of eleven's ending monologue in "day of the doctor" and i like thinking about that connecting link. i don't know what that connection would mean but i'm sitting here letting it wash over me like a warm bath
ten gets a summons from the ood at the end of last episode and fucks around for a while before bothering to show back up at the planet of the ood. he got married! to liz 1! "her nickname is no longer, well" get it playa. the ood show him a teaser trailer for the rest of the episode and some cult breaks lucy saxon out of jail to do some fucking alchemy i guess? "the secret books of saxon" i like when doctor who gets corny but this was pushing it. they resurrect the master but lucy fucked it up just enough
wilf, genius, mobilizes every busybody elderly person he knows on a doctor-spying endeavor. the master shows up at a quarry and goes feral on a burger. when he leaps 10 miles into the air and lands on those two homeless guys to eat them, i said "that's the last thing my 7/11 cheeseburger sees" and my bf laughed
wilf does find ten and takes him to a little cafe and they chat. ten says something must be connecting them for wilf to find him so quickly, and i think this is twofold– i think they have a connection bc wilf is related to donna, who is obviously heavily entwined w him (like, sorry, in twilight how jacob was drawn to bella bc of her yet-unborn daughter), and i think it's also him being led to his death like the saddest little lamb to the slaughter. saving wilf will kill him, and so fate is bringing them together to facilitate that. ten admits he's going to die and wilf is like "okay? same" and ten says "don't you dare" and wilf says "alright i'll try not to" it's a cute bit. rip bernard
i think the part where he's agonizing over regeneration, "some new man goes sauntering away," that's cut and dry from rose, right? i've only seen a handful of classic regenerations (one to two, two to three, seven to eight, and for the 50th eight to war) and while they had some feelings about their deaths, it wasn't. existential? none of them AGONIZED over it. it just was what it was. even nine was okay becoming ten. but ROSE wasn't okay with that. ten's first day on earth was full of rose pining for the man he'd been. of course that imprinted on him!
anyway the master does force lightning when the doctor sees him, much like sheev did on the night rey's dad was conceived i imagine. the master is talking about how they were kids playing in the fields on the mountain and what kind of brokeback... he forces the doctor to telepathically hear his drumbeats by touching foreheads. it's fucking crazy. the master gets kidnapped and ten tells wilf "i can still smell him" what is even happening to you two
wilf says "i thought it'd be cleaner" when he gets in the tardis, lmao. the master is taken to some billionaire's house (played by friar tuck from bbc's robin hood, to me) to fix his immortality gate salvage thing. he's in a literal dog collar and leash and says "i like you. you'd taste great" do i even need to elaborate. he rigs the gate to turn everyone else on earth to "the master race" and we see obama?? like they cut to the us president about to give a speech and say it's barack obama?? why did they use obama why not Generic American. can you imagine if in "love actually" billy bob thornton was playing w bush i would have died
anyway we end on rassilon and the rest of the time lords reveling in the end of time coming to pass. it's probably nothing

Gas prices to jump eight cents a litre in New Brunswick with new clean fuel regulations taking affect Friday
Gas prices are set to rise again in Atlantic Canada, with New Brunswick seeing the largest spike.
Less than a week after the carbon tax rolled out on July 1 increasing the price in fuel, the federal government will introduce new “clean fuel regulations” beginning July 7. The price of fuel will jump by a projected eight cents a litre in New Brunswick, while Nova Scotia drivers are set to see an increase just under four cents a litre.
“People are barely able to eat,” says driver Marcus McCue. “You see the people all around Saint John in the tents and stuff like that and now you want to raise gas? I don’t know.”
“I get why we are trying to do it,” fellow driver Randy Lundrigan says. “To try not to leave such an imprint on mother earth.”
“Well if it goes up it goes up because everyone is going to put the 20 dollars in and pay 5 cents or 10 cents more whatever it is,” said another Saint John resident. “They are going to have to pay for it.”
The eight cent jump was set by the New Brunswick Energy and Utilities Board on recommendations made from the company Grant Thornton Limited.
Jonathan Alward is the vice president of policy with the Atlantica Centre for Energy. He notes the carbon tax and the clean fuel regulations have the same goal, to drive up the price of fossil fuels and reduce emissions.
“The carbon tax is really designed to sway people away from using fossil fuels by increasing the price each year at least until 2030,” says Alward. “The clean fuel regulations are designed to help the fossil fuel sector produce cleaner fuels for drivers across the region.”
The fuel hikes come at an already stressful time for Atlantic Canadians with inflation rates remaining high. Alward notes Maritimers rely on fossil fuels more than other parts of the country, and cleaner options aren’t always in the cards.
“So many residents, even if they can afford it, don’t have access to buy an electric vehicle to reduce their use,” says Alward. “We don’t have public transit the same as you would find in Toronto or Ottawa or other big metropolitan cities.”
“I think it’s really important for the federal government to understand those realities of living in Atlantic Canada, and while it is important to reduce our emissions and there is a lot of ways to do that, continually increasing the cost is going to have a disproportionate impact on Atlantic Canadians.”
The federal government is set to roll out rebates to help New Brunswickers with the rising cost of fuel. New Brunswick residents can expect to start seeing those rebates in October.

Dial / Hammons / Rauschenberg at David Lewis presents several works by the three artists that, although different in many ways, work together well.
From the press release-
This is the first-ever exhibition to solely bring together these three great American artists, each of whose conceptual ingenuity is expressed by way of material transformation and possibility. In particular, Dial / Hammons / Rauschenberg seeks to articulate the intersection between the American Duchampian legacy, as expressed in the material invention and possibilities of postwar Neo-Dada, and African-American traditions of redemptive, alchemical, and visionary practices based in found and discarded objects.
The exhibition ranges over more than 50 years; the earliest work presented is in Rauschenberg’s iconic 1962 assemblage Cartoon, then includes an early Duchampian wire, rope, pipe cleaner, hair, ball, and tack construction by David Hammons (Untitled, 1976-77), and then focuses on the 90s and 2000s, featuring four magisterial assemblages from Thornton Dial’s ‘high,’ most modernist phase of work, as well as an example of each of Hammons Kool-Aid and Tarp series from 2006 and 2007 and additional later Rauschenberg works. The exhibition also features two important sculptures: Dial’s Top of the World (1998), and Rauschenberg’s extraordinary The Lurid Attack of the Monsters from the Postal News, August, 1875 (Kabal American Zephyr) (1981). The largest work in the exhibition, Dial’s astonishing Master of Space (2004), conjures and critiques the iconography of American imperialism, military and corporate both (the eagle is made of neckties), while simultaneously calling upon and vengefully subverting the most classical of all modernist devices: the grid.
Every piece in the exhibition deploys, invents, and reflects upon the logic of assemblage: the Duchampian act of appropriation, transmuted in postwar America, into the language of assemblage, the Rauschenbergian combine. Dial / Hammons / Rauschenberg highlights these acts of American alchemy, and asks us to imagine their power and possibilities in ways which revise, expand, and complicate the history of modern and contemporary art, and weave a broader tapestry.
This exhibition closes 4/15/23.
