My primary thoughts while watching Scott Pilgrim Takes Off were: Wow the original cast sure sound like certain English VA mainstays. Scott - Greg Ayres Ramona - Rebecca Shoichet (I'm sure there's a "Seven Evil Exes of Sunset Shimmer" fic somewhere on FIMFiction) Knives - Christine Marie Cabanos Lucas - Steve Blum Wallace - Aaron Dismuke Todd - Kirk Thornton (And in this hypothetical, Julie would have been voiced by Monica Rial, Kim could be done by Jamie Marchi, Cherami Leigh could do Stacey.) This is not a diss on the actual English voice cast, who all did quite well. I was just really amused at how their approaches were so in line with notable professional voice acting styles. Special shout-out goes to Satya Bhabha, who was so immersive I felt no need to recast Matthew Patel.

Vol 1 No. 2, again only dated 1946. Carnell’s own cover design, and from this distance it really isn’t all that much of an improvement on the first issue. The contents aren’t all that much of an improvement, either, sadly.
Kicking things off is ‘The Living Lies’ from one John Beynon. Beynon went on to fame, success and immortality as John Wyndham (he gloried in the full name of John Wyndham Parkes Lucas Beynon Harris, all of which he used in various combinations), but on the strength of his offering here you’d have to have been exceptionally prescient to put your money on him. ‘The Living Lies’ is a stinker. While it’s not badly written, the plot is so preposterous that it stretches the reader’s willingness to suspend disbelief past breaking point. It’s a pity, because Beynon was clearly trying to tackle some interesting issues (race, capitalism, the relationship between the two), but his central conceit that Venusian settlers from Earth manufactured their own racial problem by turning a proportion of their new-born whites either green, red or black via the application of a certain marinade and a slow bake at gas mark 3 is just too absurd.
Having said which, ‘The Living Lies’ shines in comparison to Patrick S. Selby‘s ‘Space Ship 13′ (inexplicably, the cover story), which is so poor it defies summary. It’s difficult to imagine that Carnell was so short of material that he felt the need to print this. Even the half-a-million words John Russell Fearn submitted weren’t this poor.
As proven by the next story, ‘Vicious Circle’ by Polton Cross. Cross was, of course, John Russell Fearn, and considering this, ‘Vicious Circle’ isn’t that bad. Silly, yes; undeveloped, yes; dashed off before the idea had had chance to germinate properly, probably. But for all that it’s far more interesting than any of Fearn’s contributions to No. 1. In this one, a poor chap’s timeline takes a spiral path, continually throwing him further into the future and (alternately) the past. It’s an interesting notion that could have made a pretty enjoyable novel in the hands of - say - Brian W. Aldiss.
Between these two stories is a short editorial, in which Carnell pronounces himself dissatisfied with No. 1, and states that each successive issue will see some improvement. After a little flannel about upcoming issues he notes the positive effects of the Bikini atom bomb test and the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki on sales of science fiction magazines. Good-oh.
L. J. Johnson’s short article ‘Ahead of Reality’ has a similar preoccupation, tempered with a kind of told-you-so fatalism. “But now,” he says, “...enthusiasts are returning from a scientific War... they find themselves living in a world of science fiction instead of reading about it.” He concludes that “Man is fast catching up his own imagination.”
If ‘Vicious Circle’ had engendered any vague notion that John Russell Fearn had a decent story in him, it’s pretty soon trampled into extinction by Thornton Ayre’s ‘Lunar Concession’. Thornton Ayre is - again - Fearn, and one wonders if it were he or Carnell who came up with all the pseudonymns. ‘Lunar Concession’ is as dismal as all the others, and must have stunk even by the standards of 1946. The characters are the merest cut-outs, walking talking stereotypes clothed in the barest threads of a plot which is only science fiction by virtue of being set on the moon and involving some guff about a super fuel. It could just as easily be a Western, or a poor entry in the Sexton Blake Library, or something of Ian Fleming’s.
Forrest J. Ackerman’s account of ‘Pacificon’ is of little interest, but at least it cleanses the palate after the second helping of Fearn.
Sadly, there are seventeen exclamation marks on the first page of John Brody’s ‘Foreign Body’. Seventeen! And the text only takes up half the page! So it’s a pretty peppery dish. Other than that, the story is only notable for sharing the same central conceit (and insect aliens) as ‘Quatermass and the Pit’, which it predates by a good twelve years. One wonders if Nigel Kneale read it.
Alden Lorraine’s ‘The Micro Man’ is a dreadful mish-mash. Lorraine was Forrest J. Ackerman, and his story is just nonsense. It’s about a tiny man who somehow ends up on earth and is accidentally crushed by the ‘big’ man who finds him on the window-sill of a street car. Tosh, from start to finish.
W. P. Cockcroft’s ‘Green Spheres’ brings no. 2 to a close and - while it’s nothing special, being a sort of Wellsian tale of an invading species being defeated by something commonplace after all sorts of other tactics have failed - it’s (along with Vicious Circle) undoubtedly the best of the bunch. Again, one wonders if Nigel Kneale read it, or (even) John Wyndham.

The weirdest thing about (English) FEH is that Wendee Lee (Veronica, Lyn) and Christopher Sabat (Duessel) are in the same production. Wendee Lee is young TK from Digimon, which was dubbed in LA, and Chris Sabat is approx. half of Dragon Ball Z, which was dubbed in Texas after season 2.
Like as someone who’s been paying attention to anime voice actors since 2000 or so, it is a TRIP. I’ve noticed FEH leaning on the TX voice actors in recent updates-- besides Sabat as Duessel, Knoll is played by David Matranga, who voiced Sanzo in ADV’s dub of Gensomaden Saiyuki-- while Surtr is voiced by Kirk Thornton, who voiced Dr. Nii Jianyi in Geneon’s dub of Saiyuki Reload. Like I have the DVD of Saiyuki Requiem where TX VA Greg Ayres snarks on the commentary about CA-based Geneon getting the license for the sequel series he’d just finished dubbing for TX-based ADV. Can they get every US dub actor in this? Let’s watch them try!

The Golden Amazon premieres in the pulp magazine Fantastic Adventures in the August 1939 issue. Created by sci-fi writer, John Russell Fearns under the pseudonym, Thornton Ayre. Not an actual Amazon but a human girl, Violet Ray, who was experimented on and given superhuman powers when she was very young. The character initially tried to take over the world but then became its defender. She also was popular enough to star in 24 novels.

[Free eBook REPEAT] The Golden Amazon's Triumph by John Russell Fearn [Vintage Science Fiction]
The Golden Amazon's Triumph by the late British author John Russell Fearn is the 3rd novel in his long-running Golden Amazon series of vintage science fiction adventures, free again for a limited time courtesy of publisher Endeavour Press' Venture imprint.
This was originally published in 1953 by World's Work as part of their The Master Science Fiction Series line. The series, which had its origins in pulp novelettes released under the pseudonym Thornton Ayre, was very popular during the 1950s and 60s and ran to 21 original novels which were serialized in The Toronto Star Weekly and several posthumous ones as well, stars a scientifically-created superwoman with a greatly enhanced intellect and physical abilities, who was initially morally ambiguous.
This story finds her commissioned to figure out who is spying upon the dealings of an interplanetary shipping company, and uncovering the lingering scheme of an embittered former V-rocket scientist who has apparently laid a terrible revenge plan using the capabilities of his invention.
Offered worldwide, available at Amazon.
Free for a limited time, available worldwide @ Amazon
Description Chris Wilson, formerly chief of staff of World Airways, is now Controller of the Dodd Space Line, an interplanetary shipping company.
Mr. Rindle Emerson has come to discuss lunar ores, specifically itumen. Itumen is a special sort of ore found just below the Moon’s rock pumice surface. An extremely valuable resource.
Feeling very good about this proposition, Chris says goodbye to Rindle, but as he starts making calls within the company, he notices something strange about the huge cold-light globe hanging on a silver rod from the ceiling.
He is being spied upon!
But by who?
He immediately calls Violet Ray Brant, the supergirl whom the world knew as the Golden Amazon.
A woman of incredible intellect and bearing who would surely figure out what was going on.
It seems than an agent, by the name of Vanmeer X-19, had been recruited by Carl Mueller to feed information out of the Dodd Space Line.
But how was that possible? Carl Mueller had died five years previously.
After the Nazi’s were defeated, the V-rocket programme had been developed in all sorts of capacities, however Carl Mueller had been so bitter in his defeat that he had fired V-10#s from the moon to the Earth, loading their war-heads with atomic explosive.
To this very day the disappearance of Malta from the world, and the ruins of Cairo, Durban, and other great cities remained as monuments to his savagery.
Will Carl be successful this time?
Not if Violet Ray Brant, the Golden Amazon has anything to do with it…

My best teachers: Mr Thompson, Miss Little and Mr Ayres by Catherine Tate
On National Teachers' Day, the comedian remembers the terrific trio who inspired, encouraged and helped to kick-start her career
By Adi Bloom
09 May 2018
My biology teacher, Mrs Thompson, was also my form teacher at my convent school. She was a very open-hearted, exuberant, smiling, positive force of a wonderful woman. A sort of archetypal jolly lady.
I took biology purely because of her. I was absolutely no good at biology or any of the sciences: they were all Chinese to me. Chemistry was just symbols and in physics I was always dropping things on the floor. I have no hand-eye co-ordination - it's why I don't drive. But my memory was very good and I could trot stuff off.
Cooking was one of my favourite subjects at Notre Dame High in Southwark (south London). It was ironic, really, because I'm basically a non-cooking person. I'm a disaster in the kitchen. If I break an egg, it won't go in the bowl - it will go on the floor.
But I was very, very good at the theory of it. I could retain lots of facts about vitamins, implements and cooking styles. In theory, I'm a very knowledgeable cook. But in practice, I can't even grill toast.
Our teacher, Miss Little, was so dexterous and capable. She would show us how it was done, and suddenly there would be a Victoria sponge on the table, while I would still have flour in my hair.
But I was good at languages, purely because I can mimic accents. When you can mimic an accent, it gives you the confidence to say, "Well, I may as well pretend to be Spanish." Languages and drama were what I was good at.
My first play at Notre Dame was Our Town by Thornton Wilder. It was an all-girls' school, and I was playing a man, the drunk school teacher. My mum sat behind Mrs Thompson and she said that every time I came on stage, Mrs Thompson just roared out laughing. I felt she championed me.
By the sixth-form, my convent school had sort of called time on me and I went to a boys' school, Salesian College in Battersea. Mr Ayres, my English teacher, directed the plays we used to put on.
Even though he had no formal acting training, Mr Ayres introduced me to the discipline of putting on a play. Because I was always a little competitive, I liked the idea of auditioning. But there weren't that many girls, and the others didn't want to audition, so there wasn't actually that much competition.
We did Arsenic and Old Lace, where I played my first old lady, at the age of 16. That is where I got a taste for acting, really. It gave me the bug for doing that.
Mr Ayres suggested that I go to a summer drama school in the East End of London, and then he set up the audition for me. That is where it all started, really.
I used to stay in touch with all three of those teachers. After the first thing I did on TV, I remember going back to school and Miss Little said to me: "Do you know, I was watching some rubbish on television the other day, and I just thought of you." She meant it to be nice. She was a bit tongue- tied, and it didn't come out right.

Two months later, John Russell Fearn's Golden Amazon was back. That's Fearn hiding behind the name, Thornton Ayre. There were also short novels by David Wright O’Brien and William P. McGivern -- two popular AMAZING STORIES writers -- in addition to an Ed Hamilton yarn. Plus, the magazine was back to a monthly schedule thanks to Robert Moore Williams' Jongor! Plus the January 1941 cover sported another great H. W. McCauley robot cover! But the best was yet to come. https://www.instagram.com/p/B5q6ANVDSks/?igshid=1wwtvr4ixklen
