"The Catholic Church is corrupted- it's irredeemable!"
Tumblr media
Thomas Cromwell (1485 – 28 July 1540), briefly Earl of Essex, was an English statesman and lawyer who served as chief minister to King Henry VIII from 1534 to 1540, when he was beheaded on orders of the king, who later blamed false charges for the execution.
Architect of the English Reformation: Thomas Cromwell played a crucial role in the English Reformation, which saw England break away from the authority of the Pope and the Roman Catholic Church. He helped King Henry VIII establish the Church of England, facilitating the king's divorce from Catherine of Aragon and his marriage to Anne Boleyn.
Mastermind of the Dissolution of the Monasteries: One of Cromwell's most significant achievements was overseeing the Dissolution of the Monasteries (1536-1541). This process involved the closure and destruction of hundreds of monasteries, priories, convents, and friaries across England, which transferred vast wealth and land from the Church to the Crown.
Rise from Humble Beginnings: Cromwell was born around 1485 to a modest background in Putney, London. He rose from being the son of a blacksmith and brewer to becoming one of the most powerful men in England, showcasing his remarkable political acumen and ambition.
Chief Minister and Reformer: As chief minister to King Henry VIII from 1534 until his downfall in 1540, Cromwell implemented a series of administrative reforms that centralized and strengthened the power of the monarchy. His reforms modernized the government and laid the groundwork for the future development of the English state.
Dramatic Fall from Power: Despite his influence and contributions, Cromwell's fortunes changed rapidly. His involvement in arranging the king's ill-fated marriage to Anne of Cleves in 1540 led to his downfall. Henry VIII, displeased with the marriage, turned against Cromwell. He was arrested, charged with treason and heresy, and executed on July 28, 1540. Henry later expressed regret, blaming false charges for Cromwell's execution.

Thomas Cromwell

THE QUEEN'S LAST WALK...
It was a relatively short walk. Out of the Queen's Lodgings, past the Great Hall, and then on out through the Cole Harbour Gate, thence slowly along the west side of the White Tower.
The freshly built scaffold was no more than three or four feet high. It was draped in black, and covered in straw.
Anne Boleyn walked her last mile with Sir William Kingston, the Constable of the Tower of London. Four ladies in waiting followed her. As she passed, Anne distributed the £20 in alms from her purse to the poor. The money was a last bequest to Anne from her ever thoughtful husband.
Another thoughtful bequest raised its head- so to speak- in the manner of Anne's death. Technically, she could have been burned alive on the trumped up charges she was framed on.
Instead, Henry graciously extended to her the final 'mercy' of instant decapitation by an expert, specially imported French swordsman. Indeed, so keen had Henry been to impart this mercy to Anne that he had sent for the swordsman before her trial had even begun, and before the members of the jury had even been selected.
This kind of execution required the victim to kneel upright, more or less ramrod straight. There was no block. The sword itself was concealed under the straw. Not until Anne had said her final prayers, submitted to the blindfold and then knelt upon a cushion on the straw, would it suddenly appear to strike with one scything, whirling swoop...

On This Day In History . 18 April 1540 . . King Henry VIII made Thomas Cromwell Earl of Essex & the senior Court office of Lord Great Chamberlain, just three months before he was executed after being found guilty of treason, heresy, corruption & more. . . About Thomas Cromwell; . Thomas Cromwell, 1st Earl of Essex (born. c. 1485 – executed. 28 July 1540) was an English lawyer & statesman who served as chief minister to King Henry VIII of England from 1532 to 1540. . ◼ Cromwell was one of the strongest & most powerful advocates of the English Reformation. He helped to engineer an annulment of the king’s marriage to Queen Katharine so that Henry could lawfully marry Anne Boleyn. Henry failed to obtain the Pope’s approval for the annulment in 1534, so Parliament endorsed the king’s claim to be Supreme Head of the Church of England, giving him the authority to annul his own marriage. Cromwell subsequently charted an evangelical & reformist course for the Church of England from the unique posts of vicegerent in spirituals & vicar-general. . ◼ During his rise to power, Cromwell made many enemies, including his former ally Anne Boleyn. He played a prominent role in her downfall. . ◼ He later fell from power, after arranging the king’s marriage to German princess Anne of Cleves. Cromwell had hoped that the marriage would breathe fresh life into the Reformation in England, but Henry found his new bride unattractive & it turned into a disaster for Cromwell, ending in an annulment six months later. . ◼ Cromwell was arraigned under a bill of attainder & executed for treason & heresy on Tower Hill on 28 July 1540. The king later expressed regret at the loss of his chief minister. . . . #onthisdayinhistory #thisdayinhistory #theyear1540 #d18apr #ThomasCromwell #EarlofEssex #History #EnglishMonarchy #EnglishReformation #Britishmonarchy #RoyalHistory #OnThisDay #Cromwell #england #minister #lord #statesman #chiefminister #Tudors #TudorHistory #Tudor #Henryviii #KingHenryVIII #KingofEngland #HistoryFacts (at London, United Kingdom) https://www.instagram.com/p/B_H4N6vj6Zp/?igshid=1uy8vlbr4smuv

A king's voracious appetite for women. An underdog's attempt at survival. It is ironic to call Thomas Cromwell an underdog. He has robbed the monasteries, noble families pay him to stay in the royal good books, he helped the king get rid of one wife and then another. And yet he IS an underdog. He doesn't belong amongst the upper echelons of society- a fact he is reminded of often. Cromwell does what he does, first to save his master, then to satisfy the whims of his king and by then he is too far gone to turn back. Just like all paths of good or evil. "His speech is low and rapid, his manner assured; he is at home in courtroom or waterfront, bishop's palace or inn yard. He can draft a contract, train a falcon, draw a map, stop a street fight, furnish a house and fix a jury.He will quote you a nice point in the old authors, from Plato to Plautus and back again." We meet him in this book amongst turmoil. Anne hasn't birthed a son & Henry is impatient for another queen-third time lucky, who knows? Cromwell spins a web of deceit, lies and mirages, taking to task all those who were instrumental in the downfall of his master- the Cardinal. The man is at war, slaying those who crossed him, letting them dig their graves so all he has to do is nudge them into it. He will run out of luck, because we do know the end of such men. They fall prey to the same whims they cater to. So I cannot help but feel awful because Mantel has shown it so remarkably well that we are too good, or too bad in others' stories about us. It just depends on who is writing that bit of history. I admire this fictitious Cromwell's control. Every word is weighed and spoken. Every thought thought and concealed. Every hurt remembered, every kindness repaid. He is loyal. Even to a dead master. He is loving. To his children- sired and adopted. He is loved- by his kids and his servants. Isn't that saying something? I am in awe of Mantel's skill, nay magic. A story we know so well and she can tell it again and hold us by the throats- historical fiction, fiction too has never been as bewitching. #thomascromwell #hilarymantelbooks #hilarymantel #wolfhall #wolfhalltrilogy #bringupthebodies (at Delhi, India) https://www.instagram.com/p/CggnIpiLmW3/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

On this day, 6th of July in 1535 Thomas More was executed.
On 13 April 1534, More was asked to appear before a commission and swear his allegiance to the parliamentary Act of Succession. More accepted Parliament's right to declare Anne Boleyn the legitimate Queen of England, though he refused "the spiritual validity of the king's second marriage", and, holding fast to the teaching of papal supremacy, he steadfastly refused to take the oath of supremacy of the Crown in the relationship between the kingdom and the church in England. More furthermore publicly refused to uphold Henry's annulment from Catherine.
In addition to refusing to support the King's annulment or supremacy, More refused to sign the 1534 Oath of Succession confirming Anne's role as queen and the rights of their children to succession. More's fate was sealed. While he had no argument with the basic concept of succession as stated in the Act, the preamble of the Oath repudiated the authority of the Pope.
Four days later, Henry VIII had More imprisoned in the Tower of London.
While More was imprisoned in the Tower, Thomas Cromwell made several visits, urging More to take the oath, which he continued to refuse.
The trial was held on 1 July 1535, before a panel of judges. More was offered the chance of the king's "gracious pardon" should he "reform his […] obstinate opinion". More responded that, although he had not taken the oath, he had never spoken out against it either and that his silence could be accepted as his "ratification and confirmation" of the new statutes.
Thomas Cromwell brought forth Solicitor General Richard Rich to testify that More had, in his presence, denied that the King was the legitimate head of the Church.
The jury took only fifteen minutes, however, to find More guilty.
The execution took place at Tower Hill. On the scaffold More declared "that he died the king's good servant, and and God's first.
Another comment he is believed to have made to the executioner is that his beard was completely innocent of any crime, and did not deserve the axe; he then positioned his beard so that it would not be harmed.

Thomas Cromwell
